TAKES SEVERAL DAYS TO ANSWER THIS QUESTION (SORRY) BECAUSE WORDS HARD EDITING EVEN HARDER

ough. um. well first of all there's LOTS of tasty hand symbolism and i go bananas for that. with saiou it's pretty explicit (i reach out, but he doesn't take my hand and the bandaging scene in the FTEs, he can't lie about the warmth of his hand in salmon mode, to a lesser extent shuuichi's accusatory finger point but ESPECIALLY in the fourth trial) for saimatsu it's a bit more subtle (kaede reaching out to pull shuuichi up when he falls out of the locker, shuuichi taking her hands over the desk to comfort her even though his own are shaking, a lingering shot of their hands desperately reaching out for eachother that they CUT from the execution and i will NEVER NOT BE MAD ABOUT-) and for oumatsu it's almost entirely in my head (them playing tag COUNTS, it DOES-). it's good food basically.

(small side tangent about that last bit - i want to focus mostly on them as a trio here, but i feel like i need to play a bit of defense for oumatsu because GOOD GOD are people nasty about it in a way they aren't about saiouma or saimatsu. no, kaede does not dislike kokichi - she calls him "hard to hate" more than once. no, kokichi is not "too mean" by pointing out her failings in the tunnel (and yes, he's allowed to be snappish when he's exhausted and injured!). kaede and kokichi are a wonderful duo who both give the other much needed pushback on the faults in their personal ideologies, and they do that while knowing when to stop and just goof off together. half the people who say their dynamic is irredeemably unhealthy are stealing that dynamic and plastering it onto kaito/kokichi because they hate ships with women in them. this has been Soapbox Time With Vesper).

i think the main reason i started shipping them - beyond all three of them just having fun/cute/silly dynamics with the other two sdhnjhsf - is that they are, to me, the core of v3. i've talked about it before (1 2) , but kaede's death is EVERYTHING to kokichi and shuuichi's parallel character arcs.

kokichi is bright, extroverted, and has a hand leading the group (challenging kaede in the tunnel, establishing the first breakfast meeting, leading the charge in convincing the others monokuma is dead even when he doesn't truly believe it) but he's never the same after kaede dies; he believes *any* kind of open cooperation will get him targeted by monokuma and killed. he resorts to manipulations on top of schemes on top of plans in a desperate attempt to never end up like her.

shuuichi is withdrawn, suspicious, and really only cooperates with one person (he suspects rantarou to the point of taking kaede aside and warning her not to ask him any more questions about his talent, he makes his own plot to catch the ringleader with no intentions of sharing it with the group) but once kaede passes on her wish he forces himself to socialize and to trust in a way he never would've before, and by ch4 *he's* basically the group's de-facto leader. if v3 had a movie poster kaede would be big and faded from the back and saiou would be back-to-back in the center with everyone else lining the corners. does that make any sense?? idk.

ough what else...i think the flaws/weaknesses in each pair are helped by their third member (kokichi has ZERO tolerance for shuuichi or anyone else putting kaede on a pedestal, shuuichi is a calming presence to balance out the oumatsu shenaniganery, kaede will simply knock the boys' heads together if they attempt Miscommunication™). i think they should all bond postgame (what if we didn't directly kill anybody but we still had blood on our hands...and then we held them!!). i think they should have one of those bunk beds with a twin on top and a queen on bottom, so saimatsu can spoon and kokichi can cackle manically from his nest of pokemon plushies. i think they should go on a boba date and shuuichi should have to pull out all his acting chops to pretend he doesn't hate the texture. i think that i love them a lot :]

a/n: literally no one asked for them. but when inspiration hits me i gotta do what I wanna do

➼ Just like in Salmon mode, Kaede teaches Shuichi how to play the piano.

➼ Shuichi gets special seats at Kaede’s concerts. Kaede often feels a little self - conscious whenever she’s assigned outfits she feels that she doesn’t pull off as well as others who wear the outfit, so Shuichi’s often a sweetheart and comforts her to make her feel better.

➼ He’s such a praise - giver. He loves Kaede’s piano works and he always brings flowers to hand off to her after concerts.

➼ Whenever Shuichi’s stressed, Kaede kisses him on the forehead and forces him to take a break and relax a bit.

➼ The more romantic, cheesy couple. They do things traditionally with a little added flair.

➼ While in high school when dating, they’d have ‘study dates’ and such - even though they’d both have a hard time doing any actual work.

➼ Hugs and kisses are a must. Whenever one’s having a particularly stressful / bad day, cuddles are given from the other - the feeling of warmth and comfort in the embraces being enough to forget life’s hardships.

➼ They try cooking and baking a lot together. With Shuichi’s logical, sharp mind and Kaede’s skilled fingers and flexibility - they make good partners when it comes to making food to satisfy the both of them.

➼ PDA always gets initiated by Kaede. It’s never too heavy or overwhelming, usually just light touches and soft kisses on the cheek or lips. Shuichi, no matter how far into the relationship, always manages to get out a small blush or more whenever the gestures are put into action.

➼ Shuichi, later into the relationship, starts giving out more PDA to Kaede. But his favorite moments are when the both of them are mostly alone.

➼ Overall such a loving, supportive couple.

platonic rarepairs ough,,,i think the first two i think of are tenko&shuuichi and himiko&tsumugi! i latched on to tenko&shuuichi right after the first trial when tenko threatens to beat kaito's ass for punching shuuichi (she seems to have a real soft spot for sad wet cat people. also LMAO) and there's this optional side conversation after shuuichi walks into the dining room without his hat where she says the others were insensitive by asking about something that should be kept between him and kaede, and she'll help carry on kaede's wish too and shuuichi has this soft little smile and!!! AUGH!!!!!!!!! their FTEs and love hotel together mean NOTHING to me they're so much more endearing in the main story. friends!!

as for himiko&tsumugi - i cannot for the *life* of me find it, but i swear there's this bit in one of the trials where she says she'll silence someone with a spell called the DEATH SPELL and tsumugi says 'um, well, i suppose being dead would silence someone pretty good!' and it made me laugh so hard i immediately latched on to them. i think a lot abt them hanging out on the sidelines,,making costumes together, talking about magical girl anime, becoming even closer once they joined the student council - and tsumugi being himiko's closest friend left by ch6. it would make the betrayal more impactful i think.

as for romantic rarepairs - i don't wanna say akasaiou since that just consists of three decently popular ships, so! i've been thinking a lot about gokutoujou lately :] gonta complimenting kirumi's spiderweb patterns and telling her she reminds him of a spider,,,kirumi being unafraid of gonta or his bug friends,,,formal dancing lessons that slowly transition into lazy circles as kirumi happily listens to him tell her about a cool beetle he found ○|￣|_ they're so soft. i just want them to fall in love as they realize the other wants them for THEM, not for any service they can provide.

I headcanon that Kaede and Shuichi pregame are 'friends.' They hang out with each other, but they don't consider each other close people. Also, I never played the game so, some things may be inaccurate.

Kaede and Saihara walk together down the street from their school. To clarify, the two came from different schools, coming from the same train and live in the same street. Although it's going to a long road, they both didn't mind.

Kaede right now was smiling, can you blame her! She got accepted into her favorite killing show, and Shuichi got included too, I guess. She let out a girlish giggle, skipping down the path. "Ah~ tomorrow is the day! I can't wait!" She said, beaming with excitement, not knowing what will happen. Saihara smiles as well since he couldn't wait too.

"You don't have to tell me that Akamatsu-San." He chuckles. Kaede looks behind her, looking annoyed. "What did I say about honorifics? I said no honorifics when we're alone," seething with rage, "besides, who said I was talking to you, Saihara." Yet Shuichi bears with her rudeness and smiles. If he can handle his uncle, he can handle her.

He laughs and apologizes to her. Shuichi touches his phone, opening the official website for Danganronpa. It showed all the possible contestants for Danganronpa, but the only name he was looking at was his and Kaede's that were next to each other to his delight.

Kaede became acutely aware of Shuichi's silence. Ever since that day, she kept noticing anything Shuichi did when back then, she wouldn't even care. Becoming uncomfortable with only hearing the noise of the crickets, she slows down to have the same pace with Shuichi and looks at his phone.

Startled, he covers his phone as he didn't expect her to come close. The blonde pouts, which Shuichi thought was cute. "What, were you watching porn or something?" She questions. In response, he said no. Shuichi blushes at the thought of doing so, right in front where people could see and hear!

Shuichi puts his phone back in the bag and sighs. "I was only looking at the list of participants of Danganronpa 53, y' know?" Kaede eyes him like he was suspicious. "And thinking about how you will die by someone else hands, like hell, I would never accept that!" Angrily shouting at him. Surprising Shuichi, implanting an idea that Kaede will be jealous that he will die by the cause of someone else, not of him but the person who will kill him. The girl stomps away from, as he couldn't help but smile.

He puts his hand around her face, making her look at him. Kaede wanted to push him away, yet she couldn't but be mesmerized by his face.

"Then," he starts looking at her directly in the eyes, "I can't wait for you to kill me!" Smiling and blushing while he had the look of a crazy person. Kaede flushed at his declaration. She slaps his hand, shying away from him, and turns back from Shuichi. Kaede didn't need to turn around to see his face turn into an eager and gentle smile. The thing she needed was her composure back.

"Of course, I will..." her voice wavering slightly, slowly turning to him, "who's going to beat your ass better than me?" She says cheekily. Shuichi smiles back, both becoming aware of each other's feelings.

They didn't care if there were people, the elderly and children alike were looking at them weird. To them, this was beautiful and a horrific romance.

They are a match made for Danganronpa, and they're going to die or win together.
