Epik High — “가족관계증명서” | “Family Portrait” English lyrics
Title’s literal translation: “Familial Registration Certificate”
My first instrument Was a toy music box Dad got me on a long business trip. The first typewriter I touched What the one he tapped on every late night in his study. Right, among all of my talents The youth he passed down to me Is breathing. Three siblings, my older brother and sister one year apart Would bicker if their eyes so much as met. The late-born youngest would tear up the house. I understand Dad’s dour face. In our house, peace was as precious as rice. Now even on good days, The silence of the empty space is louder than laughter. When I was held in Dad’s gaunt arms for the last time, I realized Even heaven grows old.
I don’t like who I’ve become. I don’t know who I’ve become. Just because I’m me, I’m so lonely.
Someone who understands me, Someone who will hold me, Now there’s no one. I’m lonely.
I sometimes remember The smell of coal and the semi-basement one-room, The first shelter for our family of four. We dreamed in that windowless darkness, But it was the only time we lay under one blanket. Dad always walked a step ahead of the family; His steps now slowly become slower. Whether I’ve eaten, Whether I’ve been well, Mom’s worry hasn’t lessened one bit. Even my timid little sibling who always waited alone in an empty house Has become the head of a family. Nowadays he's a doting dad for his daughter. He probably understands a parent’s feelings better than me. Even as one family becomes three, And becomes a noisy extended family, It will be shorter than the time we lived together. Even that time will be filled with regrets.
I don’t like who I’ve become I don’t know who I’ve become Just because I’m me, I’m so lonely.
Someone who understands me, Someone who will hold me, Now I only have myself. I’m lonely.

The Untold Truth of "Letter"
Back in 2021, 2022, or even early 2023, if someone had told me about the possibility of JK having vocal credits in Jimin's solo album, I would have called it wishful thinking at best. But it happened, and we got the song "Letter" (AKA Dear Army) as a hidden track in Jimin's first solo album, FACE, with back vocals by JK, and his name written invisibly in the album book.
Tumblr media
The perfectly matching vocals of Jikook, with the heartfelt lyrics and soft instruments, undoubtedly made one of the most beautiful songs of the year, which could break many records for Jimin and his album if it was released in the streaming and buying services. The release of Letter as a hidden track in Jimin's solo album raised many questions and debates among Jikookers, and as someone who barely scrolls in the Tumblr app, I know I'm a bit late for the party, but I may or may not have some notes to add to the already made discussions. FYI, these are my analytic views and speculations, I am fully aware that this song has been named "Dear Army", and Jimin called it a "Fan song" on different occasions. So, I do not intend to ignore that and diminish Jimin's expression of love for his fans.
What's a Hidden Track?
Before getting into "Letter", we need to understand what a hidden track is. Well, the definition is pretty clear; When a song is not listed in the official track-list of a music album, but it exists in (some versions of) the physical printed CD, cassette, or LP, it's called a "hidden track".
Hidden Tracks of BTS
There are several techniques and reasons to "hide" a track in an album, but in the case of BTS discography, the hidden tracks exist for a specific reason, and I'm going to explain it with the only examples we have. The debut album (2013) and Love Yourself: Her (2017), are the only BTS albums including hidden tracks, and if we ignore the skits in each album, "Path" and "Sea" are the only hidden songs BTS ever released. So, these two songs must have something(s) in common and different from the other BTS tracks that caused them to end up as a hidden track. To find that common factor, we need to check their lyrics first:
Path
[Intro: RM] Yeah, wassup? You know, time flows like stars (Check it, check, check, check, check it out) [Verse 1: RM] I started from imitating Eminem, Garion, Epik High To writing my own raps Now I see that I’m already at Hongdae My lyrics back then were all (****) Bossy But we dunno, we dunno When I dreamed without anyone to stop me Reality tied me down and trapped me inside Oh, my youth trapped me My hot heart lost to my cold mind (Damn) As I blindly told myself my decision was right I don’t know whether it’s an angel or a devil, but it says to me "Do you really have any plans to rap properly?" (Yes or no?) I didn’t have more time to hesitate and didn’t want to be stupid So I came here and three years passed by Some say art is long, life is short But for now, art is life Life is sports, just do it, uh [Chorus] If I had chosen a different path, would have I been any different? If I stopped and looked back (Oh hey ya, hey ya) What will I see at the end of this road? Where you should’ve been standing? (Oh hey ya, hey ya) [Verse 2: Suga, Suga & Jungkook] A long time passed and by 2013, I was a trainee for three years I was a high school student who grew overnight (I became a child) White hair grew from my desires and one by one my many friends (Parted ways with me) I spent my time in Seoul alone without a family (That was my third spring) I thought my worries would disappear with my debut ahead of me I closed my eyes to the present that had nothing to change But the reality was different, even as my family and friends tried to stop me I walked into the tunnels that shed no light on my own I thought I would be alone (Why?) As it turns out, there weren’t seven bare feet but we were wearing the shoe named Bangtan We’ll have to go forward, take one more step, become newer And that’s how I spent my fourth spring in Seoul (Whoa) [Chorus] If I had chosen a different path, would have I been any different? (Hey) If I stopped and looked back (Hey) Oh hey ya, hey ya What will I see at the end of this road? Where you should’ve been standing? (Oh hey ya, hey ya) [Verse 3: J-Hope] 2010, the year I walked towards Seoul! I just loved to dance, and now I’m standing on top of the stage Until then, I overcame many pains and scars to prepare myself I survived with my belief to bend, not break, and ran for three years Let the stars inside my heart shine! Now shine on me differently Write “Bangtan” on the paper world I walk my future with more lights on Give a smile to that far future (Ha, ha)
As you can see, the lyrics are simple and self-explanatory, so I guess we don't need any lyrics analysis, and the description section of the Genius translation I used here, says it all:
“길 (Road/Path) follows the member’s decisions to become idols in the Korean music industry. They recall their different upbringings from listening to hip hop in school to the hard years of being trainees under BigHit Entertainment. BTS pose the questions of how their lives would be different if they made a different decision, and they ask themselves what the future entails. A very introspective track about their career for a debut album, BTS display their thought processes as they enter the music scene.”
Sea
[Intro: Jungkook] Oh, ah, yeah [Verse 1: Rap Monster] I just started walking and ended up at the sea I'm looking at the coast from here There's endless sand and the rough wind I'm still looking at a desert I wanted to have the sea so I swallowed you up But I'm even thirstier than before Is what I know really the ocean? Or a blue desert? [Refrain: J-Hope] I don't know, I don't know If I'm feeling the waves right now, yeah I don't know, I don't know If I'm being chased by the sand wind, yeah I don't know, I don't know Is this the sea or the desert? Is this hope or despair? Is this real or fake? Shit [Pre-Chorus: J-Hope] I know, I know, my hardship right now I know, I know, I'll overcome I know, I know, open me up It's the place I can rely on Think positive, I'm swallowing my dry spit Even if I'm nervous, even if I'm in a desert I'm in the beautiful Namib Desert [Chorus: Jimin, Jin] Where there is hope, there is always trial (4) [Hook: V, Jungkook] Where there is hope You know, you know You know, yeah yeah (2) [Verse 2: Suga] I thought this was the ocean but it's a desert A medium-sized, ordinary idol was my second name Countless people get cut from broadcast But someone's empty spot is our dream They say some of these kids can't make it cuz their agency is too small I know, I know, I know too Times when the seven of us had to sleep in one room With foolish hope that tomorrow will be different before we fell asleep We saw the mirage in the desert but we couldn't grasp it Praying that we'll remain in this desert till the end Praying that this isn't truly our reality [Verse 3: Suga] In the end, we reached the mirage and it became our reality The scary desert became the ocean with our blood, sweat and tears But why is there this fear in between the happiness? Because we know too well that this place is really a desert [Refrain 2: Suga] I don't wanna cry I don't wanna rest No, who cares if we rest a little? No no no I don't wanna lose It's always a desert I told you everything Then I'll just be more depressed [Chorus: Jungkook, V] Where there is hope, there is always trial (2) [Hook: Jimin, Jin] Where there is hope You know, you know You know, yeah yeah (2) [Bridge: Rap Monster] Ocean, desert, the world Everything, the same thing Different name I see ocean, l see desert I see the world Everything's, the same thing With a different name It's life again [Hook: V, Jungkook] Where there is hope You know you know you know yeah (2) [Chorus] Where there is hope, there is always trial
Compared to “Path”, we have more innuendos and metaphors in “Sea” because of Namjoon’s lyricism (it was supposed to be in his mixtape at first), but as the description says:
"It discusses the hardships BTS has experienced since debut, particularly struggling to compete with groups from other, larger agencies. In this song, BTS reflects on these hardships, fearing that their global fame and success could leave as suddenly as it arrived."
Common Denominator
These two lyrics have one big thing in common, and it's the topic they are discussing. They talk about the members' struggles, fears, hopes, and dreams career-wise. I was thinking maybe these issues are something they can only share with their longtime fans, not the general public, therefore, they decided to release them as hidden tracks in the physical album for their real fans who buy them, something like the difference between Weverse and Instagram, I guess? Then I realized that’s something Namjoon has mentioned himself to Billboard Magazine, in LYS: Her interview:
And if fans are so lucky to own the physical album, they’ll hear two hidden tracks at the very. Why keep them secretive?
"I think they’re hidden because you have to be a real fan of BTS to understand them. Otherwise, you won’t. Otherwise, you’d like to be, “Why are they feeling so confused about things? They’re good?!? They’re No. 1 somewhere, they have so much stuff, why are they worried?” People always talk about that. But if you are a true fan of BTS and you buy the album and you listen to the hidden track — if you are an Army and we spent time together from 2013, 2014 — they could understand. It’s kind of more special, more closer, to our true hearts"
What about "Letter"?
In conclusion, hidden tracks for BTS, are something between them and their real fans who know about the path they have wended, therefore they can open up to them through lyrics and talk about their fears and struggles and ambitions without being judged or misunderstood. Also, we have to debunk some of the misconceptions going around (especially after the release of FACE) about hidden tracks. For example, some claimed that Letter is made for fans because hidden tracks are always supposed to be “gifts” for fans. This claim obviously can’t be true when you are able to listen to a hidden track legally, only by purchasing the physical album. Gifts are supposed to be free of charge, like Promise, Still with You, Christmas Love, My You, and so on.
Then what about “Letter”? Why this song is a hidden track in Jimin’s first solo album? Did Jimin want to say something by hiding this track in FACE? To answer this questions, we need to pay attention to the lyrics and how the song was made:
[Verse 1] What should I say? And how should I convey it? I'm really not getting my words right I know it sounds so clichéd So that it's not taken lightly Let me say it to you properly [Chorus] I say oh-oh, I hope you can be happier You, who stretched your hand out to me whenever I fell I say oh-oh, I'll hold it now (I'll hold it) So when you feel like crying, you won’t fall [Verse 2] After all this time has passed Will we still be the same? Just like we were when we first met, hmm-mmm If we are together, even the desert could turn to a sеa Just like how we were then, oh-hoo-ooh [Chorus] I say oh-oh, I really hope that it’ll last forever You, who felt like a warm spring to me in a cold winter I say oh-oh, I'll always cherish it All those moments between you and I [Refrain] Baby, don't leave Just stay by my side, yeah To you, who see me bigger than what my little self is (to you) So that I can give as much as I’ve received (oh-oh) So that I can keep my word (oh-oh) Don't worry, just stay by my side, yeah (Yeah) We don’t know what the future holds (holds, yeah) And that’s scary and makes us afraid (oh-oh) But don’t forget that we’re always together (don't forget) [Outro] I know it sounds so clichéd So that it's not taken lightly Let me say it to you properly
The Feelings
If you compare these lyrics to "Path" and "Sea" you can clearly see the differences, and except a mention of "sea and desert" there's nothing in common between them. Letter is not a monologue about career issues, it's a romantic song. These lyrics are expressing the feelings and addresses them to an audience and appreciates them. But how was this song made?
According to Jimin, at first, SMF Pt2 was supposed to be the last track of his solo album, but in their YTC promotion and recording era when they announced that they have planned to put their group activities on rest, Jimin decided to express his feelings of the moment through a letter, and turned that letter to song lyrics. Producers liked the song so much and decided to add it in his album and that’s how “Letter” was born. Although Jimin didn’t explain much about those “feelings” and left the conclusion to us like a true artist, we all know that this song is totally different from the other tracks in his album.
All the tracks of FACE are dark and sad. Jimin’s first album is all about himself, and he talks about the painful emotions he had as an artist and a person in the past few year, but with “Letter” there is a different story. Recording Academy admitted this and wrote:
“Though the EP is technically only six songs, the physical version has an additional “hidden” track called “Letter”. The song provides an intimacy that stands out from the other FACE tracks, capturing Jimin in his best form. The lyrics are poignant and vulnerable as Jimin pleads for someone to stay (“Baby, don't leave Just stay by my side, yeah”) The biggest surprise though? Fellow BTS member Jungkook contributes vocals to harmonize with Jimin.”
A Fan Song?
“Letter” being a “Fan Song” is a stated fact by Park Jimin himself, and there can’t be any arguments about it, but that fact doesn’t mean Jimin made this song with the thought of fans in his head and all about them. In one of my old posts, I said that a faceless crowd can’t be the muse for a romantic song, especially when that song has a "standing-out intimacy".
Another reason for calling "Letter" a fan song, is the fact that it starts at 6:13 of the album, the numbers that remind us of the debut date of BTS. We can't call this a coincidence because we know how thoughtful and punctual Jimin is. But don’t forget that 6.13 is more of BTS time than ARMY time. So, as much as you call this track a song for fans, it can be called a song for his fellow BTS members.
Why JK?
Now, let’s address the elephant in the room. Why JK was a part of this song? Did it mean something for Jimin, or did he have no other options? Jimin said that FACE is an album about himself, and he didn’t feel right about featuring other artists in it, that’s why he decided to record SMF Pt2 all alone and do all the rap parts by himself instead of featuring Yoongi in it. He collaborated with several producers and songwriters (including Namjoon), but there was no featured artist in the whole album.
About the background vocals of the album, he did most parts by himself, and for the other parts, he worked with artists who already had credits in his album, such as BLVSH, Sumin, and James Keys. But JK didn’t have anything to do with Jimin’s album. Jimin was fully capable of doing the background vocals of Letter by himself, as he did for the first parts of the song. Jimin never really explained why he decided to have JK in the song, other than saying their voices match. This known fact doesn’t give us much information, but we can have our speculations.
Closer Than This?
Another thing that questions the idea of “Letter" being inspired by fans, is the existence of “Closer Than This”. The newest release of Jimin is the exact definition of a fan song, the lyrics are straightforward and directly address the fans and leave no place for speculation. If CTT is the result of Jimin getting inspired by his fans, then “Letter” must be inspired by something different because these two songs are not comparable.
The difference becomes more obvious when we look at the initial version of the Letter lyrics in Jimin’s drafts. I wonder what the Grammy journalist who called the final lyrics of “Letter” intimate would have said if they read this:
You hugged me tightly Only you who protected me Hold my hand, hold my hand tightly You who reached out my hand You held out your hand to me
We don’t know what was going on in Jimin’s mind when he wrote these, but we can see that the initial lyrics have been moderated, and the intimate parts, which clearly refer to a person, didn’t end up in the final lyrics. FYI, I’m doing a lyric analysis here, and this is not a complaint or conspiracy theory because Jimin said that he liked the way the final version came out, and it's all that matters.
For Fans, Not About Fans
So far we made it clear that "hidden tracks" are not about fans, they are for fans like any other BTS song, but the hidden tracks are a secret between the artist and the fan, something that only the true and dedicated fan can understand, and this applies to Jimin's "Letter".
Jimin gave up on many records for streaming and buying by releasing this song as a hidden track in his album. So, there must be an important message in this song that he wanted to convey to the true fans. He did his share of being thankful to fans by CTT, and I don't think he needed to do it twice in a year.
Maybe you prefer to think Jimin just made this song for ARMY and hid it in the album as a surprise or because it didn’t match with the whole concept of FACE, and you might not be wrong about any of that. But, don’t forget that he didn’t explain anything about this, and we both are just making assumtions.
Yes, maybe Jimin didn't acknowledge JK being a part of Letter in his promotion era, but JK did everything he could for his share. A few hours before the release of FACE, he started a live and played a part of it with his guitar, and months later, he watched Jimin's live performance for Festa while harmonizing with it and reminding us that he knows the lyrics very well. In Jimin's documentary he was very supportive and even teased for a live performance with him in future.
Why Just Jikook?
Jimin and Jungkook are not the only members of BTS. But I don't know why everytime Jimin or JK do something with romantic undertones, the fans (OT7 ARMYs, to be more specific) immediately try to label it as "About ARMY". I usually don't see this energy with the other five members. I'm perfectly sure they are also very grateful for ARMY, they have released several songs about them, and they would have loved to collaborate in a fan song with Jimin, too.
Then why Jimin only included JK in Letter? Why he wanted to sing for "ARMY" with him? Unless we assume Jimin's gratitude towards ARMY has connections with JK, and I don’t even want to bring up 2019 "I am army" jokes. But "Letter" is the song the most optimistic Jikookers didn't expect to exist. You may try to ignore and normalize it, but you can't deny the fact that Letter proved Jikook's unbreakable connection as two harmonic colleages, long time friends, and inseparable souls.

Happy Yoongi Day!
Hello! I know I am late. But I had scheduled the post and Tumblr decided to not post it. So I have to redo it. Idk it just vanished. And I wasn't on Tumblr yesterday as I had gone out. So I didn't even notice.
Yoongi is my bias. He loves so silently. It's so pretty. He may not tell the whole world. He loves you but he will show it through actions. We stan quiet love in this world.
Whether it is going fishing because Jin wants to.
Tumblr media
whether it's complimenting RM on what a great leader he is without even hesitating
Tumblr media
Source: https://twitter.com/bhluish/status/1376596688656166918/photo/1
Whether it's being Jhope's no 1 fan. Texting him after his first solo concert and cheering him on even though it's not something he does.
Tumblr media
whether it's always complimenting Jimin and giving him the love and attention he deserves because sometimes he may feel insecure
Tumblr media
when goes along with Taehyung because he knows he loves being silly and affectionate. Even though it's outside his comfort zone he does it to please Tae
Tumblr media
when he always reminds everyone that Jungkook is the best vocalist. He never ever lets anyone forget how proud he is of Jungkook and how talented his boy is.
Tumblr media
He would do anything for BTS
youtube
They are also very much in love with him. Let's not forget army has to fight BTS to scream Yoongi Marry me!
youtube
BTS aren't the whole idols whipped for Yoongi. Many idols love and admire Yoongi and can't stop praising him from PSY to Hoshi to TxT. He's a cat producer collecting idols everywhere he turns
youtube
Yoongi loves music. He loves his art form so much. It shows in the work he does. The music he produces. The people he interacts with. His lyrics show so much vulnerability and it's amazing how passionate he is. If you have never listened to Yoongi's music. Here is some of my recommendations.
Yoongi has produced and collaborated with many musicians like Halsey, IU, Juice World, Max, PSY and Epik High. They always praise him and talk about how amazing he is. I can't wait to see how his album turns out. He just loves music so much. It makes me love him more.
Yoongi is a talented cook
Tumblr media
Man can sew and play basketball
Tumblr media
Plus he's well-read, he is a dog dad and he is amazing with words. He really is husband material. He is perfection. He plays the guitar and the piano. He can rap and sing. He is also a fashionsta and breaks gender norms with his fashion. He is just an ideal man. He also donates money anytime he can and he always make sure we his fans know how much he values us. I am very much in love with him. Happy Birthday, Yoongi-ssi. I hope the day is filled with your beautiful smile
Tumblr media
to my bias and the reason I am alive. I love you very much Yoongles <3

it's been a fruitful year of discoveries, rediscoveries and deeper dives into discographies i wasn't as familiar with so coming up with a trimmed-down selection was challenging but here's my own 2023 "wrapped"!
2023 RELEASES
💿 "genshin impact: millelith's watch" soundtrack disc 1 [and it has to be disc 1], hoyo-mix — i know nothing about it other than it being a video game, loove the music tho
💿 "ok. respira" + "red light (EP)", elodie — are they good? it's radio-friendly pop and EDM but do i like them? absolutely
🎵 i wanted to include paranoïa, angels, true love by christine and the queens but despite having listened to it in its entirety a bunch of times i definitely picked favourites and slightly ignored the rest? so: "tears can be so soft" + "angels crying in my bed" + "marvin descending" + "to be honest"
🎵 same hat for so!yoon!'s episode 1: love -> "in (void)" [one of thee most intros] + "smoke sprite" [give me a solo version i beg u] + "till the sun goes up" + "exit"
🎵 "de selby (part 1)", hozier
🎵 "nothing lasts forever", sevdaliza feat. grimes
🎵 "tik tak tok", silica gel feat. so!yoon!
🎵 "床 (lie)", no party for cao dong
🎵 "ghosts again", depeche mode
K-POP (and related) CORNER: "psycho", jun 🌸 "god of music" + "super" + "fire", seventeen 🌸 "the rizzness" + "guilty", taemin 🌸 "rover" + "sinner", kai 🌸 "coolAs", key 🌸 "o (circle)", onew 🌸 "10x", shinee 🌸 "nevertheless", billlie 🌸 "golden hour", mark lee 🌸 "screen time", epik high feat. hoshi 🌸 "attitude", fromis_9 🌸 "fighting", BSS feat. lee youngji 🌸 "better things" + "drama", aespa
(RE)DISCOVERED IN 2023
💿 listened to kino for the first time, fell in love! i've had the black album (кончится лето/konchitsya leto, муравейник/muraveynik & кукушка/kukushka 😘👌) on rotation lately but i have a bunch of faves you can send an ask about if you like <3
💿 delved deeper into cocteau twins' discography but i basically played "heaven or las vegas" [been waiting for a copy to drop at the local used cd stores to no avail] and this faye wong x cocteau twins playlist *a lot*
💿 also had a massive depeche mode phase in the spring; tended to stick to their 80s/90s releases and "violator" is probably their most popular album but for good reason!! do check "waiting for the night" from it + this is my tag for further track recs
💿 "bié records meets shika shika" — it's a project from two labels, one beijing-based the other argentinian, whose artists marry electronica with ambient and folk music; they matched their artists together to remix each other and this compilation is the result
💿 "raven", kelela
💿 "trececerotres (EP)", daniela lalita
🎵 "a pure person (單純的人)", lim giong — one of the best opening scenes in cinema ever! millennium mambo's soundtrack has been temporarily taken down from spotify so you have to look for it in chinese characters
🎵 "dancing elephants", rochelle jordan — specifically this performance
🎵 "yo-soul", lim kim
🎵 "spring breeze", hiperson — love love the production here
🎵 teresa teng's cover of "長崎は 今日も雨だった" (a rainy day in nagasaki)

10 songs, 10 people
Thanks for the tag @mostlymaudlin <3
Uh idk exactly how to do this so I just went through my On Repeat Spotify playlist and picked out 10 songs (I used YouTube links here to be more inclusive 😂)
이브, 프시케 그리고 푸른 수염의 아내 (Eve, Psyche & The Bluebeard's wife) by Le Sserafim - I’ve had this song stuck in my head for a week help
꽃 (Flower) by Jisoo - I’ve also had this song stuck in my head for a week (but that’s because it lowkey inspired me to plot a new Andreil WIP lol)
We’ll Never Have Sex by Leith Ross - I love this song so much, both cuz it’s an asexual love song (happy pride month wheee) and cuz it’s soooo Andreil it’s insane
Through Me (The Flood) by Hozier - I’m so pumped for this new Hozier album to drop and I’ve been obsessed with all of the pre-releases so far, but this song is my fave of them
The Horse and the Infant from Epic: The Musical - these concept EP’s have become my entire personality irl
จริงเกิน (Surreal) by Jeff Satur - KinnPorsche kicked off my Jeff Satur phase back in February and I’m still living in it, so this is my fave of his songs by far and, like many Jeff Satur songs, it also gives KimChay vibes
All You Wanna Do from SIX - saw SIX live recently and it was like one of the best shows I’ve ever seen in my life, and this song is of course my favorite
Any Way The Wind Blows from Hadestown - this song might be important for my AFTG Big Bang fic but you didn’t hear that from me 🫢
True Crime by Epik High (ft. Miso) - this song gives me such strong Andreil vibes but I couldn’t tell you why
Take Me Back to Eden by Sleep Token - most recent song I listened to that made me insane with the Andreil vibes
Tagging:

i need your thesis on all the songs in the album i'm being so serious rn 😭 i'll rb it once a day for months and months don't deprive me like this of things i didn't even know i needed
ioaefjerjgioajo ill try my best aiofjoerjgiojao i was so annoying to my friends over my first impressions over all the songs so im gonna try my best to summarize my thoughts on these songs
joonie said this entire album was a recollection of everything hes done in his 20s aka the transformative years of his life and you can ABSOLUTELY hear the member influences (at first i heard the sope influences bc they have the biggest body of work so their style is most distinct but upon relistens its really a love album to his younger self (you can really tell its an evolution from rm and mono) and his members. ALSO i love how he modulates and changes his style and timbre to fit the style and quirks of his featuring artist? hes so fucking cool????? oh my GOD?????? anyways heres the impressions by song:
track one: yun ft. erykah badu very hot of him to start the entire album w 'FUCK THE TRENDSETTERS' the bassline the restraint of a laidback soundscape the reverb set to max the lines 'I wanna be a human / ‘Fore I do some art / It’s a cruel world / But there’s gon’ be my part' is so fucking insane? fuck. this song lyrically is all about uncertainty and the soundscape has a lot of space for growth and white space for art to be exhibited dare i say, its like the debut group's first stage? full of promises and expectations and uncertainty, but you march ahead regardless......what a sexy first song on the track track two: still life ft. anderson paak
BRING IN THE FUNK HELLS YEA VHOPE IS VIBING SO HARD RN I JUST KNOW IT now the empty space and reverb bassline is given some direction and happiness here. still life is a form of art and thus begins rm's first piece of art here in his lil art collection and joon accepting that things will come as they are and ppl will try to reduce him down to one thing, but hes still a fully realized human moving forwards like us all
track three: all day ft. tablo
ok this bassline and instrumental SCREAMS yoongi to me. the lil kick between verses the beats w the bassline the high melody line the bridge that sick transition from verse to chorus like no wonder tablo is here. i know yoongi draws lots of inspiration from epik high so it makes sense. sonically speaking this song takes the funky sounds of the previous track and condenses it and brings a hint of melancholy just in time for our next track. speaking on less fun notes, tablo is really the only other person who survived such vicious tonguelashing and emerged more powerful and a better person and im just glad joonie has someone to look up to.
track four: forgetful ft. kim sawol oh our queen of folk here to deliver some nice kindie chill vibes thank you i need it for our coming song mwah. here we slowly start to hear the funky bright poppy merge to a chill sound this song was for tae i just know it!!! sonically theres some fun stuff going on but it feels like a cooldown piece for the rest of the album. joonie really said i can pull off ALLLLLLLL genres.
track five: closer ft. paul blanco mahalia
the rnb influences the syncopation the pop beats i bet jk is having the time of his life singing to the chorus. the guitar and the beat and the piano makes me an immediate fan. also they modulated the message beep to be in the same key??? as the song?????? AND it gives us a diving board into the electronica of the next song and then the sound expands when joonie comes in???? i love it.
track six: change pt. 2
OOF KIM NAMJOON DID SUM NASTY WORK ON THIS SONG ITS SO GOOD ok ok ok so this sudden electronica synthpop isnt jarring bc joonie did a fantastic job ordering this album BUT you know whats the fucking kicker???? the way he arranged this song. on paper this song should NOT fucking work but it does bc they used the same chord from the synths as the piano that comes in later even tho it turns to double time half way thru the song and it would be amazing at there BUT(dont quote me on this) change and change pt 2 are either in the same key or are on relative keys AND if you listen to change ft wale which starts on the piano and goes to electronica, he does the exact opposite here???? fuck and the lyrics mirror each other as well????? fuckK
track seven: lonely
this is the love song to mono the reverb on that guitar the upbeat melancholy the tokyo forever rain vibes are THERE BUTTTTT hes added more complex transitions and layering? like even in this short amount of time hes grown exponentially fuck kim namjoon ur so sexy track eight: hectic ft colde
THIS IS THE HOBI SONG OF THE ALBUM YES KING GIVE ME THAT BOUNCY BASS AND HIGH AIRY SYNTH CITYPOP VIBES YES KING i NEEDD someone to give me a just dance x seesaw x hectic remix asap it would sound SO good. also as someone who listens to a lot of colde/offonoff, this collab is SO FUCKING good bc you can hear coldes influences as well? its so good my god the sax the lil touches the production FUCK. ANNNDDDDD they switched to double time again for this outro so the next song doesnt come in too jarring??? mr kim how did you fit so many genres into this album and yet they all belong together????? im in so much fucking awe man!!!!!
track nine: wildflower ft. youjeen
ive told you pretty much everything i wanted but fuck the production on this song is just so fucking good. the details. the expert control of the soundscape. the arrangement. i cant wait to hear vocal line sing youjeen's lines. i also love that he put his title song at the end bc hes at the end of his 20s. this is him currently. hes still growing and growing roots and stretching to the sun fuck man i cant believe this song took over my most played joonie song forever rain in a week.
track ten: no 2 ft. park jiyoon
and here we are returned to the starting spot but slightly to the left, like when you've walked thru the museum exhibition and am spat out the exit right where you started, but w the new insights and experiences that the you from an hour ago didnt have. joonie is a masterful curator and this song ouroboroses us right back to listen to this album again. the tongue in cheek of ending w 'no looking back' when im ready to replay this album again like you literally inviting me to replay this album youve made it a point to end like this?????? lmfao kim namjoon who do you take me for hmmm?????
if youve made it to the end here i love you nothing makes sense anymore i only know that i love kim namjoon and that ive had this album on loop and i STILL hear new things in it i have no words for how much respect and awe and love i have for this man. and when he said 'fuck the trendsetters' he really did it. he dabbled in ALL of the most popular sounds and genres you hear in the music industry, pulled it off w aplomb, and moved on. anyways i love kim namjoon.

2 cool 4 skool album analysis: Intro
Well, friends, I have returned, much changed and yet not at all changed. Sliding in under the wire of January, this is me making good on my promise to post a track-by-track analysis of 2 Cool 4 Skool by BTS. If I can stay on top of it, I plan to do this monthly until 2025, according to this schedule.
Some things about what to expect: I'm a classically trained singer and instrumentalist with two music degrees, neither of which has anything to do with pop music or music production. What you get are my highly trained listening ears and my very subjective thoughts and feelings about this music. I'm going at this from a baseline of deep love and respect for BTS, so if I seem to be critical or poke fun at them, please bear in mind that it comes from a place of affection.
So we're getting started with the very beginning of BTS: 2 Cool 4 Skool. Which, believe it or not, is technically considered a single album. If you only look at the three song tracks, that seems plausible, but it's also got an instrumental introduction and interlude, plus two skits (“Skit: Circle Room Talk” and “Outro: Circle Room Cypher”), not to mention the two hidden tracks on the physical (“Skit: On the Start Line” and “Path”). For a single album, it's packed. It goes along with the early Bangtan theme of doing the most. Like, this was your debut? Are we kidding?
I was fascinated and honestly a little baffled by the structure of this album when I first encountered it, and I've since come to understand that the non-song tracks, particularly the skits, are actually a hip-hop album thing. As much as we can look at early BTS and see the limitations in their understanding of what hip hop actually was (and was not), they were, at least, doing their best to emulate and respect what they saw as the characteristics of the genre.
The first track is simply called “Intro: 2 Cool 4 Skool”, produced by Supreme Boi. It opens with a sample from a disco instructional record, which is delightful enough on its own, but Wikipedia tells me that it's actually a callback to the 2003 Epik High track “Go” from an album called, believe it or not, Map of the Human Soul. Epik High is definitely on my list of groups to learn more about, not only because their influence was so formative to BTS, but also because Tablo just seems like a really cool guy.
I don't have an awful lot more to say about “Intro: 2 Cool 4 Skool” as a track. The whole vibe is immaculate - the record scratches, the heavy reverb on the drums, the gunshots and the slowdown at the end, you listen to this minute-long snippet and you know exactly what you’re getting into. It starts off the album as unmistakably a hip-hop record in both function and vibe, featuring (in Korean) the lyric, “We tell our story in a carefree way on behalf of those in their 10s and 20s”. It makes a really good, encapsulated statement about what to expect from this single album and from this group.
From here on out, each track will be getting its own post, however short - I don’t anticipate having a massive essay on Circle Room Talk, for instance, but I will be splitting them up for organization’s sake. Translations will always come from Doolset Lyrics unless otherwise noted.
Look forward to the rest of the album posts coming soon.

(a pic from my tattoo today and a pic of it the day i had it tattooed; it's the butterfly from epik high's "epik high is here part 1" album cover with the words "icarus lives" written down)
i've liked epik high since 2012-ish and ever since the first tome i listened to lost one it spoke to me. in 2020 i wrote a song called "icarus' hypothesis" when i was struggling with life. in 2021 i went through one of the worst moments in my life a bit after epik high released epik high is here part 1 (a roughly a month or so)
one day i was going back home from work and as i strolled down the sidewalk feeling hopeless and empty and devastated "lost one" started playing on my music app; so i heard the words "they took everything from be, they stole the ground beneath my feet, they left me high and dry to sell a fucking lie, i lost one. they took everything from me, they stole the ground beneath my feet, left me to die, so what? i never bought their lies. i lost... no, they lost the one". i started weeping like a baby as i stopped and waited for the bus on the bus stop.
icarus lives. i lived. i live.
music is truly amazing. it gives us hope. their music gave me hope.
i can't wait to actually go watch them live on august 6th in sao paulo 💙💙
you can find the tattoo artist on instagram (vinidelfi_tattoo), if you're from sao paulo support him, he's wonderful and the studio he works on is great as well (veniceinktattoo)

super different from when I was writing both sides now and I ONLY listened to joni mitchell, although kind of the same in the sense that the music is the thematic and tonal core of the story. you can bet for the next longfic I write there will be musical inspiration and a playlist. I love music so much guys every genre every level. I love talking about music. let's talk more about music what do we fw?? any album suggestions for my massive playlist??

i've been trying to get into 1st gen kpop but most spotify playlists include only the same 4 groups. you don't have some recs by any chance? perhaps even something cunty sung by women
god I love talking about kpop. my kpop tastes are strange and varied and i will talk at length about it 😅
so, 1st gen kpop is buckwild and i love it. it’s very unpolished, experimental stuff bc obviously there are no formulas yet. people are just trying shoot their shot in the dark, and seeing what sticks 😊
the hits hit, and the misses miss. dramatically.
i’m a terrible judge for cunty music, but i’ll lean towards girl groups for these specific recommendations:
baby vox (specifically their third album, “come come come baby” and onwards. the first two albums are full of member changes and struggling to find a marketable style that works for them, but there are no member changes from the third album onwards and they have absolutely found their groove. the two lead singles on that album are great, and i have “killer” saved on my favourite kpop songs playlist)
s.e.s (their early stuff is very fairy-cute concept, but they get into more mature stuff as they grow into their career. i have “U” on my playlist from their fifth album)
fin.k.l (same as s.e.s, they start off quite cute and cuddly and then grow into maturer stuff. their song “now” is on my playlist)
boa. (my fucking girl boa. great music. every lead single is fuckin great. love her. highlights for me include “ID;Peace B”, “No. 1”, “Atlantis Princess”, “My Name” and “Girls On Top” which fucking rules)
park jiyoon (“coming of age ceremony” hits so hard. this record was so popular that it was jype’s best-selling album until a twice ep (the one with “TT” overtook it. 20 years later. and also fun fact, technically makes the tiniest of cameos in my ‘consort’ fic bc i’m a nerd for kpop history)
and for boys
h.o.t (the only song I out-and-out love is “candy”. but their debut is pretty good - and fun fact, SKZ cover it in the first episode of their survival show way back in 2017, it’s adorable. be prepared for…like, weird shit in their songs. they have a werewolf song on their second album and they howl on it and on stages and it’s just campy fun. the og template for exo’s “Wolf”, i’d put money on it)
shinhwa (“perfect man”. fuck me, “perfect man”. SO good. one of my favourite 1st gen songs. one of the very few songs that still feels timeless. SO GOOD. “twinkling of paradise” is also fucking weird, it’s a hip-hop track that samples fucking swan lake. but from what i remember, the original 90s version has the n-word in it which is a massive turn-off for me. the downside of 1st gen kpop, they’re blinding grasping at a lot of hip-hop elements without understanding them.)
rain (you can really feel the jyp fingerprints on this guy, for better and for worse. i enjoy his songs, but definitely with at least a little sense of irony. his debut song is all about him being a ~bad guy~, like come on. the dude is still a teenager here, it’s more cute than anything else)
seo taiji and boys (FUCKING “I Know”. the song that literally started kpop as we know it now. SO SOOO GOOD. it was my most-played song of 2020. my favourite 1st gen kpop song. it still holds up, and it was released in 1992. thirty years ago. also, shout out to “hayeoga” for the best guitar solo in kpop (not including k-bands, ofc, but even then it’s up there) and “come back home” which, while i’m personally ‘eh’ on it, is a lot of people’s favourite. also also shout-out to “classroom idea” for being the only kpop song i know of with fucking death growls in it. like i said 1st gen is wild, they are doing so much experimental shit.)
there are other groups i know of but haven’t yet explored (off the top of head: jewelry, chakra, m.i.l.k, sechskies, epik high - who i only really know for their 2nd gen stuff - turbo, deux) but uh…yeah. this list was long enough as it is 😅😅

Hey there, it's the anon you recruited lol
Tbh, i forgot to inform you that it was not only that you convinced to to finally listen to bts, but to kpop in general. I had some weird dislike for bts because of the 'boy with luv' ( was salty they didn't give halsey more lines) and was afraid of k stans in general. I don't personally love their newer releases, but wings is *chef's kiss* and also all of their cyphers are amazing.
I think i'm gonna have to go with Yoongi for my bias. fitting since he was the first person i read fanfic about lmao
Thanks for spicing up my playlist. I'm more cultured now!
(wow this ask became long, sorry for that)
Looking forward to ldomlt and your posts in general, they always bring a smile to my face :D
omg i'm so happy you came back 🥰 hi!!! i'm so excited for you to fall down the kpop rabbit hole with us. there's so much fun to be had!!!
tbh i feel you on the fandom aspect 🙈 i casually followed bts for quite a while before i got fully into the online army world. i think there are a lot of negative perceptions about kpop fandom - some based in truth, some less so - that largely come from the 'vocal minority' that sadly tends to exist for any kind of large community. just gotta carve out your own groove with what works for you!! and as with anything on the internet, the mute/block buttons are always your friends 🫶
and congrats on your immaculate TAAAAAASTE w your album and song choices my friend !!! wings is so slept on imo and has some of my all-time faves. BS&T ofc but like lie? mama? first love? awake? interlude: wings? 2! 3!? 21st century girl????? literally all so good 😭
OMG YOU ARE IN YOUR PRIME, THERE HAS MAYBE NEVER BEEN A BETTER TIME TO BE A YOONGI BIAS THAN TODAY!!!! have you listened to d-day yet, or watched the haegeum MV that just dropped??? i'd love to know what you thought 🥺 definitely make sure you check out his previous solo mixtapes as well if you haven't (agust d and d-2) - the agust d trilogy is truly a goddamn masterpiece!!
also highly recommend digging into the broader kpop scene if you still want more, there's a lot of amazing groups and artists out there beyond just our bangtan boys 🥰 i'll recommend a not-quite-kpop group that is one of yoongi's faves (and inspirations!) and goes well with the more rap-heavy style it seems like you're into - epik high!!! i saw them in concert last month and my god they are just living legends, for real. definitely check them out if you get a chance!!
my response being even longer omg, i threw so much at you 🙈 for real though, i cannot overstate how happy it makes me to hear from you again 💜 got a bias and everything, there's no turning back now!!! 😈 i'm so glad you decided to give bangtan a try, and it means the world that you're enjoying LDOMLT and all of my weird chaos on this little corner of the internet 🥺 thank you for being here!!!! 🫂
