Allotropy and Polymorphism

Polymorphism is defined as when a material has more than one potential crystal structure. These phase transformations can occur as a result of different external variables - temperature, pressure, etc. - but typically only refer to crystalline materials. (For example, glass is not a polymorph of silica, it is a metastable phase.) Allotropy is a similar concept, but applies only to pure elements. Carbon has multiple potential phase transformations, such as graphite to diamond (or vice versa), which are considered allotropes of the elements. Because of these definitions, polymorphic and allotropic phase transformations are typically solid-solid transformations.

On-surface synthesis of carbyne: An sp-hybridized linear carbon allotrope

In a study led by Prof. Wei Xu (Interdisciplinary Materials Research Center, School of Materials Science and Engineering, Tongji University) and published in the journal National Science Review, a research team achieved the successful synthesis of a one-dimensional carbon chain on the Au(111) surface, with the longest chain containing approximately 120 carbon atoms, and the polyynic nature of the carbon chain was unambiguously characterized by bond-resolved atomic force microscopy (AFM). The creation of new carbon forms with different topologies has emerged as an exciting topic in both fundamental chemistry and materials science. Carbyne (linear carbon chain), an elusive sp-hybridized linear carbon allotrope, has fascinated chemists and physicists for decades. Due to its high chemical reactivity and extreme instability, carbyne was much less explored.

Israel's use of White Phosphorus in military operations in densely populated Gaza and Lebanon puts civilians at risk of serious and long-term injuries according to a new Human Rights Watch report on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

White Phosphorus is a munition that uses an allotrope of the chemical element phosphorus to create a smoke, illumination or incindiary effect. White Phosphorus burns upon contact with air and reaches temperatures of 800°C [1'472°F].

White Phosphorus can often cause severe burns and injuries which can than absorb the phosphorus, leading to organ failure.

White Phosphorus can be used for marking, signaling, obscuring, or as an incindiary weapon to set fires that burn incredibly hot, devouring soldiers, equipment, and civilians alike.

"Any time that white phosphorus is used in crowded civilian areas, it poses a high risk of excruciating burns and lifelong suffering,” said Lama Fakih, Middle East and North Africa director at Human Rights Watch. “White phosphorous is unlawfully indiscriminate when airburst in populated urban areas, where it can burn down houses and cause egregious harm to civilians.”

Human Rights Watch verified videos taken in Lebanon and Gaza on October 10 and 11, 2023, respectively, showing multiple airbursts of artillery-fired white phosphorus over the Gaza City port and two rural locations along the Israel-Lebanon border, and interviewed two people who described an attack in Gaza.

Human Rights Watch spoke to the people who were from the Al-Mina sector of Gaza City who described "observing strikes consistent with the use of white phosphorus."

Both witnesses, who were in the street and an office building at the time, described seeing air strikes with explosions in the sky, followed by white lines falling to the Earth. The attacks took place some time between 11:30pm and 1am local time.

Both witnesses told Human Rights Watch the smell was strong and stifling and led one of the witnesses to approach a nearby window and record the incident from his phone.

"Human Rights Watch reviewed the video and verified that it was taken in Gaza City’s port and identified that the munitions used in the strike were airburst 155mm white phosphorus artillery projectiles," says the Human Rights Watch report.

"The use of white phosphorus in densely populated areas of Gaza violates the requirement under international humanitarian law to take all feasible precautions to avoid civilian injury and loss of life."

Israeli authorities refuse to confirm or deny the use of White Phosphorus despite the testimony of witnesses and video recordings.

Attacks using air-delivered incendiary weapons in civilian areas are prohibited under Protocol III of the Convention on Conventional Weapons (CCW). Though weaker restrictions exist for ground launched incindiary weapons.

Protocol III applies only to weapons that are “primarily designed” to set fires or cause burns, and thus some countries believe it excludes certain multipurpose munitions with incendiary effects, notably those containing white phosphorus.

Sanguine Tensor needed a new character for various plot related reasons so I’m retrofitting an older character into that role. So here’s revamped Maulissa!

She got MURDERED and it was AWFUL and then came back kinda wrong due to carbon plague and captured and used by the government and got rescued by a weird lady with holes in her and a robot cat that keeps ranting about the booj-wah and nothing fits anymore and everything is terrible! She has a 4 year old son who thankfully is being taken care of by her sister and he's very chill about the whole thing. Mommy threw a truck at the cops and he thought that was great! She was a kindergarten teacher and just wants things to be normal again and it is not happening! What even is a booj-wah?!

Initially her resurrection due to carbon plague messed with her digestive system and she just has a toothy maw in her chest with horribly corrosive chemical. Her original mouth is gone and she just has a weird air filter instead. In a weird inversion of Zmeyevich she gets a secondary power set in the form of hyperspace worms. These turn her into a meat TARDIS with a weird subspace internal factory and she can “copy” the macro scale characteristics of anything she eats. And she’s capable of eating nearly anything. The copied objects are made of carbon allotropes and generally have superior strength/toughness/sharpness compared to the original.

They always come out covered in spit. It’s gross.

So in addition to be very strong and fast she can puke up ridiculously sharp swords. And every once in a while she can puke up something that’s doesn’t 100% seem to obey physics and confuses spectrometers.

She has to hang out with supervillians and they won't shut up about science. Please help her.
