Alphard: It's so hard when you meet a man, fall in love with him and then--
Sirius: He marries the girl he's been pining for and you're happy for him but inside your heart is breaking and then before you've recovered from that he dies tragically. I know.
Alphard: I was going to say 'and then he becomes a formless wraith somewhere in Albania' but ok.
Sirius: What?

I know that it's often driven by his jealousy or very suspicious circumstances, but it's so funny to me that across the stories Alphard is so quick(?) to be like "those two are fucking, aren't they?" E.g. Tom/Bellatrix, Tom/Death Eaters, Tom/whoever was on the Knight Bus, Tom/Minerva, and Albus/Minerva
Perhaps his obsessive reading of the trashy romance novels is affecting him
It's deeply funny to me and @therealvinelle as well.
Though it's less the trashy novels and more of a deep insecurity over his relationship that Tom has not helped in any way shape or form and indeed has deliberately made less certain for his own purposes.
Though I tend to give him some slack in that a lot of these things do look really really bad. Leaving because "Bella is calling" at three a.m., after years of hearing Bellatrix talk about the Dark Lord and clearly wanting to sleep with the man, and realizing all these other Death Eaters are the exact same...
I can't blame the guy for wondering.

I know you and the muffin are still in the middle of writing fics with these characters and so i might be asking for spoilers. In that case feel free to tell me to sit down and be patient, but I must ask:
Do you see any way for a relationship between Tom and Alphard to work long time?
What got me wondering was the latest chapter of The Man Who Would Be King when Alphard thought about how he might have chosen similar to Andromeda if things had been different for Tom and him.
And I don't think they would make it either way, however much I want them to.
In canon adjacent timelines they could have left Britain together but Alphard's strength is to never really pick a side and get by that way and I'm not sure he could actually leave his family behind.
And in female!Alphard timelines I think the fact that there's now options besides Tom would result in him (or rather her) being able to eventually get over him or at least pick a more acceptable man and suffer in silence forever.
So yeah, are they doomed in all universes or could they make it?
This is an interesting question, because it depends on what we mean by working (and on what we mean by spoilers).
The thing about Alphard and Tom's relationship, as depicted in our fics, is that we haven't actually gotten into why it happened, nor how strong their feelings are. What made Alphard interested to begin with, why is he still carrying that torch, how did Tom get sucked in. We haven't really shown their problems either, only hinted at them.
I will say: it's not in mine and @theoriginalcarnivorousmuffin's nature to write uncomplicated pairings, to have relationships without problems. Aro/Carlisle being a great example, they always get together in our fics (Blue Moon and The Invitation excepted) and by all accounts are capable of being very happy together, but they have significant differences that go unresolved (namely, that Aro kills people every other week for sustenance, while Carlisle is on the animal diet).
It wouldn't be interesting to write a ship that has no problems, where there aren't valid reasons they shouldn't be together, and Alphalord certainly have both. As for them working in the long term, yes I do see it (though not saying either way as for whether that's in the cards for The Man Who Would Be King specifically).
Hope this somewhat answers your question.

They Are More Than They Seem
Within the volume you will learn about the Machina, sentient robots lifeforms able to alter their shape to hide from their enemies. Their history is spelled out from their origins tied to the blood of the Alphas the Astral Forge had created to defeat the implacable hunger of Eradicus, though the creation of the city-sized starshi Colossi, the conquest of the Trinitons, the arrival of the AlphaLords and the eventual war for control of the world of Central and the search for a new home that found Earth.
The Machina Wars presents a new option for everything from background characters, to a PC allied to the Machina, to an all-Machina campaign playing out various eras of the Machina Wars. You can use them as an element of your Super Powered Legends campaign, add them to your own world, or make them the focus of their own ongoing stories. This sourcebook has the terms, rules, and NPCs you need to add as much, or as little, Machina action to your M&M game as you want!
And of course they may already be in your game, hidden as common cars, trucks, and planes…

Lucius: I have the closest relationship with the Dark Lord because I use my wealth and influence to support his efforts.
Regulus: I have press clippings about him decorating my room so I can think of him every day.
Bellatrix: I have his Mark branded on my arm and have sworn my life to his cause.
Walburga: I've supported my favorite child's ambition to join his Death Eaters.
Sirius: Ugh. This dinner couldn’t get worse.
Bellatrix: What about you, Uncle?
Alphard: I don’t kiss and tell.
Sirius: O_O I was wrong. It got worse.

Pollux: It's time for you to get married.
Alphard: I don't want to.
Pollux: We're Purebloods. We don't get married because we want to. We get married to carry on the family name.
Alphard: I'm gay.
Pollux: And? So am I. That's no excuse not to produce an heir.
Irma: What?
Alphard: I'm already seeing someone.
Pollux: Your duty to your lineage comes fist. He'll just have to accept it.
Alphard: ... So should I tell Lord Voldemort you want me to be unfaithful to him or do you want to?
Pollux: ...
Pollux: Walburga, pick your favorite unwed male cousin.

I really liked the scene in which Alphard gets into muggle clothes, and looks at himself in the mirror, comparing himself with Tom. It feels a lot like the Prince and the Pauper, but only on Alphard's head. Like, the idea of himself not being a Pureblood, or worse, not being a wizard at all, seems a rather close thread of thought he could have easily reached. And I know he would be horrified and, to his horror, intrigued by.
It all comes together when he compares himself with Tom. Because Tom is beautiful, is talented, is everything a wizard should be except for the fact he is muggleborn. And, for a moment, Alphard thought, or almost thought, about what it could be if they exchanged places. And he knows he would be even more invisible and plain than he already sees himself.
And Tom seems excited by the idea of Alphard dressed as a muggle. Aroused too. And a perverse part of me wonders, I must admit, if this whole line of reflections could end up as them role-playing. One in which Alphard is muggleborn or a muggle (since, after all, he already is acting as muggle when he becomes Tom's fiancée), and Tom as a Pureblood. On the other hand, Tom in your fics seems too socially conscious and resentful to actually want to be a Pureblood, other than because of the privilege and power it may give.
I think a lot about those two. Alphard somehow became one of my favorite characters in HP, and he is barely even mentioned in canon. I really love what you (as in you and Vinelle) created when writing him.
Amulette d'Amour by me and @therealvinelle
Ooooh, thank you, anon! Look, @therealvinelle, praise!
I'm deeply flattered, anon, very deeply flattered, your thoughts are beautiful, and I love every word of this, but I'm also laughing because "I think a lot about those two" and this chapter you're describing came out yesterday.
Yesterday.
(And Tom is both very socially conscious and resentful and, at this age especially, he uh... would be very conscious period of any kind of 'I'm a bad bad Pureblood prince and you're my naughty Muggle sex serf' routine.
The man may want to be a pretend Dark Lord, a very serious occupation he assures you, but notice that his pretend Dark Lord was not going to form himself a pretend harem or build a pretend sexual dungeon.
And yes, this is where Tom's head immediately go if suggested any kind of 'role play' even though he and Alphard could role play anything they want or do what they're already doing where they entertain little old ladies in costumes at dinner parties and pretend they're getting married.
Tom would die, just die, if Alphard accused him of wanting this,
"It's not like that, I swear, I really am just a bad bad man.")

Bellatrix: The Dark Lord is a descendent of Salazar Slytherin himself. He's a Parselmouth! He has giant snake called Nagini and-
Sirius: Can we change the topic?
Walburga: How can he be a descendent of Slytherin? We went to school together. He came from a Muggle orphanage.
Regulus: He's Halfblood.
Sirius: Great. Can we please talk about something else now? Anything at all.
Alphard: Huh. So I'm not a blood traitor. Guess I won’t be burned off the family tapestry after all.
Sirius: ... O_O :O
Sirius: I changed my mind. Let’s go back to talking about the stupid snake.

In Amulet what were Tom and Alphard's respective first impressions of each other upon meeting for the first time in school? I love your writing btw. Thank you for existing.
Oooh! Praise! (Look @therealvinelle, praise!)
Amulette d'Amour by me and @therealvinelle
Though the way @therealvinelle and I often write this would be pretty much the same as their first impressions in The Man Who Would Be King and anywhere else unless clearly stated.
A lot of this has been hinted at/covered in both of these fics to some degree so the best thing to do is read the fics. It also may come up more as stories go on.
The long and short of it is though that Alphard's initial first impression was "oh Muggle-born in Slytherin, huh, poor life choices" which immediately and violently switched to "who the fuck is this demon and oh dear god I'm in a room with him for seven years and the rest of my life will be nothing but PAIN and TERROR".
Tom's first impression of Alphard was "boring", "weak", and "kind of dumb but not as dumb as Abraxas".

Abraxas: How come your robes say T. M. Riddle on the inside of the collar?
Alphard: Because Tom likes to label everything that's his.
Abraxas: But you can't have switched robes by mistake. They obviously fit you and the two of you are different sizes.
Alphard: As I said.
Abraxas: ...
Abraxas: O_O

Alphard: Would you love me if I was a worm?
Tom: That's a stupid question.
Tom: You should ask something sensible like 'would you love me if I was hit by the Killing Curse but I'd found a way to evade death so I survived but I had to come back in an inhuman and terrible body created in a stone cauldron through dark magic out of snake venom and unicorn blood and human flesh?'
Alphard ... Tom that is disturbingly specific.
Tom: :)
Alphard: Tom what did you do?
Tom: Nothing yet. Just doing some...contingency planning.
Alphard: Tom!
Tom: ... So... would you?

cursed thought: alphalord is an accurate shipname bc if you did that ship as an omegaverse au alphard would absolutely be the world's most overlooked alpha and tom would be the worlds least second gender stereotype conforming angriest omega.
The terrible thought has crossed my mind anon.
It has crossed my mind.

Alphard: Tom and I are made for each other. We finish each other's-
Bellatrix: Murders?
Tom: -sentences. Why would you say murders? I wouldn't need help to finish a murder.
Alphard: Exactly! Wait what? Tom, did you kill someone?
Tom: :)
Alphard: Tell me that was a hypothetical.
Tom *deadpan*: That was a hypothetical.
Alphard: Tom, no! I'm not helping you get rid of the body!
Tom: Yes. I thought we'd just established that.

Tom: So I was thinking, what if I quit my job at Borgin and Burkes, go see Albania for a bit, and then come back and terrorize all of Britain?
Alphard: Tom, it is 2 o'clock in the morning.
Tom: And I've been waiting for a chance to use this great anagram I came up with.
Alphard: Tom, it is still 2 o'clock in the morning so unless you've found a way to cheat death I suggest you go to sleep before I--
Tom: Funny you should say that.
Alphard: Why is this my life?

"I don't pick favourites between my ~children~ ships" this made me imagine a hilarious family reunion.
you as the mom cooking up dinner for your kids Tom, his twin Marvolo and their brother Aro (it could be Carlisle instead but I'm thinking Aro would be more likely to survive a childhood with two Toms relatively safely and sanely).
they all promised they're finally bringing their significant others to meet you and Vinelle! you're really looking forward to getting to know Alphard, Lily and Carlisle!

Alphard: It’s Tom Riddle on my doorstep in the middle of the night. Maybe he’s finally been overcome by his attraction for me. Maybe he's realized that he doesn't need to work in that stupid shop and that with his beauty and intelligence and my wealth we could-
Tom: So apparently if you kill someone with a modified experimental form of the Transmogrifian Torture even if you transfigure the body afterwards whatever you’ve turned them into just keeps screaming-
Alphard: Please tell me you know this based on hypothetical theoretical conjecture.
Tom: Obviously. On a separate topic, would you like a screaming rock?
