Note
pureblood supremacy aside, it's actually kind of sad that Alphard actually understands muggles better than others who proudly claim they're progressive
like say Dumbledore. or Arthur Weasley
he's such a fascinating character. I think one of my favourite characters you've both created.
I forgot if this has been answered but what actor would you want to portray him?
Oooh, look, @therealvinelle, praise!
Arthur in particular is bad, I want to be somewhat nice to him (I know, on this blog? Perish the thought) and say that he didn't have enough exposure to Muggles to know the difference except that he does have that exposure through fellow Order members like Lily Evans and then later through Harry and Hermione. He does at least ask them questions but him gutting a car and then enchanting it to say how cool the car is without understanding anything of how the car works and appreciating it...
It's bad.
Dumbledore's slightly better than Arthur (which is bad because it's Arthur's actual job) but he gives the air of being self assured in what he knows and therefore believing he knows more than he actually does (the blase response when London was being bombed and Tom wanted to stay in Hogwarts during the summer was... telling)
Alphard's helped a long way by having a) an extremely close relationship with a Muggle-born where Tom did not put up with this shit and b) he likes old books. A lot. He likes really old books. A lot.
You want the classics, Alphard's your guy.
And yes, we really like him too.
And nope, we haven't done face cast and at least very late at night when I got this we both said "Omar Shariff". So. Alphard's stupid hot but for some reason no one realizes it.

Prompt 19 - Unbreakable Vow
@wolfstarmicrofic March 19, word count 391
Remus was tumbling through an old book of ancient magic that Sirius had stolen from his family library to give to Remus as a birthday present.
Remus was enjoying learning about all the old magics that he knew nothing about and learning a bit more in-depth about the ones he knew.
He flipped the page over and read the next spell, the Unbreakable Vow.
“My family tried to get me to make one of those one.” Sirius perched his head on Remus’s shoulder, making him jump. He’d been engrossed in his book.
Remus cleared his throat.
“What were they trying to get you to make a vow over?” He asked, curiosity getting the better of him.
“Oh, they wanted me to swear that I wouldn’t disgrace the House of Black.” He said as if it were a simple request.
“Godric, Sirius. Did you make it?” Remus could think of multiple ways Sirius had brought at least some disgrace to his family’s name since the summer.
“No, of course not. I’d be long dead by now. No, Great Uncle Alphard managed to get them to stop as he pointed out that any little slip-up and they’d be out an heir. It sucks for them because they ended up losing an heir anyway, but at least I live to bring disgrace to the Most Ancient and Noble House of Black.” He nuzzled his nose into Remus’s neck. Remus snorted as Sirius’s hair tickled him. “Thanks for helping with that, by the way.” Remus pulled his head back and looked questioningly at Sirius.
“My family have no use for male family members who prefer the company of men and having you at my side, and nothing they can do about it must be making so many of my ancestors spin in their ridiculous mausoleum tombs.” Remus raised his eyebrows as mischief flashed in his eyes.
“Oh, so I’m a trophy gay? Just keeping me around to look good and annoy your family?” Sirius wrapped his arms around Remus’s shoulders.
“Hmmm, yes. My incredibly sexy trophy boyfriend who just so happens to be gay. Who, I am about to take upstairs and allow him to disgrace my family name just a bit more.
Liking the sound of that, Remus shut his book and hurried after Sirius as they climbed the stairs to the boy’s dorms.

Alphard: Are you gonna make sure nobody picks on your brother?
Sirius: Mhmm
Alphard: You're gonna stick up for him?
Sirius: Yeah
Alphard: What does he have? Do you remember what it's called?
Sirius: Auto-Autumn...
Alphard: Autistic?
Sirius: Autistic!
Alphard: And if kids pick on your brother, what are you gonna do?
Sirius: Kill them
Alphard: ...reasonable

i'm thinking about how the characterisation of the black family tends to be really difficult to get right and one of the reasons that i can think of is that we don't know enough of wizarding culture, so we try to convey the atmosphere and the dynamics through codes that are familiar to us
that's why they are so victorian in so many fics. they act and speak like they're inside a victorian novel, they only ever wear black and dark green, the high society/pure blood circle is also composed by meeting for tea, and having balls, and discussing politics, and arranged marriages
and that's not bad!!! i read and love some fics like that, but i think this is an aesthetic that completely ignores some of the things we know about wizards and about the blacks
first of all, the clothes. wizards wear robes. not late 19th century clothes, robes. and they're most often dramatic and colorful. this is something easily observed in the very first chapter of PS. so i think the blacks should wear deep purple and emerald green and silver and burgundy and turquoise, make outfits fun!!!
second, grimmauld place tells us some things about its inhabitants. the fact that it's a muggle house in a muggle neighborhood shows that they must have some level of cognitive dissonance in terms of what elements of muggle culture and lifestyle they hold (but i don't think that applies to holding the same patterns of views and behaviors of high society, again, it's about how the writers tries to convey "rich and uptight" with codes that are familiar to them). the decoration choices for the house are also very telling, family heirlooms, big clocks, tapestry... troll leg and house elf heads??? that's morbid. that's camp.
and my point is, black family characterisation lacks on campiness. wizards are inherently weird. anything in which they're overly polite and too aristocratic is inaccurate. they are bigots and lobbyists and one of them was literally headmaster of hogwarts. they are into the dark arts but they don't torture their children. make them funnier and messier and weirder and more like real people instead of a bunch of lines from downton abbey glued together

Alphard: It's so hard when you meet a man, fall in love with him and then--
Sirius: He marries the girl he's been pining for and you're happy for him but inside your heart is breaking and then before you've recovered from that he dies tragically. I know.
Alphard: I was going to say 'and then he becomes a formless wraith somewhere in Albania' but ok.
Sirius: What?

Knives and the House of Black
You know who loves knives? Members of the Black family, that's who. In my newer writings, I've been exploring knives and what they can do for the Black family. This is based in canon - Bellatrix has her handy dagger, which kills Dobby and wounds Hermione (and who knows who else), and Sirius gifts Harry a knife that can open doors (until the blade is destroyed). Personally I love the idea of the Black family having a love affair with knives.
In my micro fic for the @ladiesofhpfest's mini yesterday in honor of Bellatrix Black Lestrange, I introduced a tradition of Black family witches and wizards getting knives on their 13th birthdays. This tradition came out of the world building I'm doing in my Tedromeda/Remadora AU, Supernova. I've pre-written a good bit of the work, which includes some knife head canons. I'm happy to share them here, and if you're reading Supernova, you'll see how they all fit into the story as it goes on.
HCs for Black family knives:
Knives are goblin-wrought and imbued with a ton of familial magic. Droplets of Black family blood are folded into the silver to create a particular blood magic that prevents Black family members from harming each other with their knives. The blade dulls if it touches another family member.
How related do you have to be? The magic holds with concentration, so once you get past grandparents, it's lethal. E.g. Scorpius Malfoy and Teddy Lupin couldn't hurt each other because their grandmothers were Blacks, but their children could hack each other apart if they wanted to. This also means that Black family members' spouses are fair game - e.g. Bellatrix can play with Rodolphus as much as she likes (and she really likes).
The knives have magic of their own: when they're 13, the knives have the basic Black family magic, but when they turn 17, the knives have gotten to know their owner enough that a new, unique type of magic is revealed. (See below for each of their magics!)
The knife *always* returns to its owner unless its magic is modified or the owner is deceased. If the knife is stolen or lost, it'll come back the next day.
Black family witches wear their knives around their thighs. The holsters are lightweight and barely noticeable. The holster is made of leather and the blade cleans itself within. Black family wizards keep them on their arms or in their pockets. The witches usually get daggers and the wizards usually get pocketknives. Either way, they're self-cleaning so they don't have to worry about dirty blood on their bodies.
The Black family magic can't be taken away, even if someone is disowned.
The knives are long enough to pierce the heart, or can be extended to do so.
The witches' daggers tend to be very ornate looking, with flowers, stars, or other patterns engraved in the handles. They're innocent looking until you're being stabbed and losing consciousness. Yay!
The wizards' knives are handsome and practical-looking. They look like ordinary pocketknives most of the time until you realize that they're about to shank you.
Now, for specific HCs on what the knives can do for each family member when they turn 17 (this is an incomplete list - it's what I have so far for Supernova, which is mostly centered on the Black family witches):
Walburga: her knife BURNS. If she's stabbing you with her dagger, it's going to scorch your skin and make your blood boil. Ouch.
Orion: his pocketknife is Walburga's opposite. It freezes, so imagine getting stabbed in the heart and then having your heart grow cold at the same time. Goodbye life.
Alphard: his pocketknife is a dual-purpose compass. It can give him directions as needed, but also points to what he most desires (think Jack Sparrow's special compass).
Cygnus: his knife temporarily blinds its victim. Not only can he stab you, but you'll be blinded for a hot minute, which makes it hard to escape.
Bellatrix: her knife ALWAYS leaves a mark. She can carve whatever she wants into whoever she wants. That scar is never going away.
Andromeda: her knife doubles as an escape. She can swish it around and create a quick bubble with which she can Apparate away as needed.
Narcissa: her knife changes shape according to her wish. This is useful with potions, but extra useful if she wants to inflict maximum damage on someone by using a serrated blade.
Sirius: his knife is the pocketknife that opens any door. He's clever enough to change the magic on it so he can gift it to Harry, because he's had enough of his family and Harry has more use for it now.
Regulus: his knife becomes invisible to anyone but him. It's an excellent way of being able to sneakily attack someone. You think he's going in for a hug or a handshake and boom, bye-bye life.
Nymphadora/Dora: this is particular to Supernova, my story, as she's being raised under different circumstances. Her dagger will heal her. When she runs her blade against a wound on her body (and her body alone) it will seal itself.
It's all fun, games, and knives, until one of them is fucking you up with their knife and having a fabulous time doing so.

HC that Sirius takes after his mother in anger and emotions, she seen so much of who she used to be; who she could’ve become, in Sirius that it made her hate him most. Meanwhile, Regulus was always thought to be his father’s son, the perfect heir. Regulus had always been the son to follow the rules, to do what was expected of him. The second son, the second choice. He was the one to rebel in the quiet ways, to hide in the shadows while shedding his skin, just like who his father was. Except, Orion never rebelled, no.
Regulus took after his Uncle Alphard the most. A quiet man who had always been in his sister’s shadow, using it to his advantage. He took after his heart, as well. Like a curse, the second star must fall for the personification of the Sun, only to loose him in the end.

Alphard adopts Regulus AU
WE LOVE AN ECCENTRIC FATHER FIGURE AU. YAS REGULUS GET YO'SELF A PROPER FATHER! read on for wholesome content.
I imagine Sirius running away and Alphard getting wind of this. Instead of remaining in the shadows, he reaches out. He's never been close to any of his siblings' children and Sirius Black only manages to evoke a blurry memory of a little boy who used to strut around in family galas. Shrill voice often attracting the ire of his parents. Alphard thinks the boy had a shadow — so much smaller than Sirius. But with Sirius barely striking up an image in his mind, the other remains an elusive memory.
But just before he leaves, Sirius is all like "I have a brother. He's not bad like them but he thinks he can't leave."
AND IT'S ALPHARD WHO REACHES OUT TO REGULUS. I have so many thoughts. Let's go!
Because Sirius isn't enough. Sirius has an entire village behind him, pulling him out of his family and just ONE person who he may think of as a reason to stay.
Regulus has an entire village pulling him back and one person who he can think of as a reason to leave for. Regulus who has been soooooo isolated from anyone else whose family IS his end all be all. If Regulus leaves, he practically has no one. The Potters have never been his people he doesn't know them. And Sirius can't POSSIBLY keep him safe in Hogwarts. Regulus has no adult support.
But imagine A RELATIVE, A BLACK coming up to him and slowly working him out of that stupid fucking house! AN ADULT who can pull him out of Hogwarts! AN ADULT who can give him a home!! Because as much as the brothers want to make it work, Regulus needs someone who can provide not just emotional support but also both financial security AND SAFETY.
Regulus just needed an adult, I think. Well, nope. He needed a lot of things. Because that's what it takes to get out of an abusive (already cult-ish) family. A lot.
But Alphard. Alphard could've been a key player.
Alphard could be this eccentric father figure to Regulus. A man, who for Regulus, gave Sirius a shit ton of money, listened to his brother, and reached out to take him away.
Alphard, knowing how Regulus couldn't possibly be safe in Slytherin anymore — takes him out of Hogwarts and enrols him to Beauxbatons. And he becomes much more annoyingly French. And during the summer Alphard will tease him about his French accent that increasingly colors his English. Beauxbatons helps with Regulus' indoctrinated and learned bigotry even though it's hard the first few months. But there's no Slytherin house to hide behind anymore. People don't tolerate it there. However, just as much as it's a steep learning curve, learning to unlearn his upbringing, it's just as easy to keep on growing out of it, too. He breaks free from a manipulative echo chamber.
Alphard does more than help with this. They'll have conversations that end up with Regulus shedding tears of frustration because it's hard to unlearn the way you've been taught to see the world since childhood... usually under threat of punishment. Sometimes, his eyes will fill with tears of guilt and embarrassment, often when revelations are met, and he looks back at what he's said and done. But he's only 13/14. He improves so much because he cares. He was taught wrong. Alphard makes sure his boy gets all the same love, care, and comfort no matter how their conversations end.
And Sirius will visit... Sometimes... And it'll be a gradual rekindling of their frayed relationship. Alphard plays mediator. For the first time, in his life, Regulus has an adult who's on HIS SIDE.
Alphard may or may not be a little cuckoo but in the most endearing way. Rivaled by how much this drives Regulus crazy. Like. He doesn't like trousers. So, he wears his boxers around the house and Regulus has to scream at him to knock it off and, "Please, there are things your nephew shouldn't have to see! Nephews shouldn't be subjected to the sight of uncles in their underpants!"
And Alphard will gleefully reply, "Oh dear, Reggie boy, you've yet to understand what true liberation feels like!" he'll meet his boy's eyes and say, "Thinkers. Eccentrics. Free people, like us? We have souls that yearn for expression that make us feel alive." Alphard will make a show of gesturing to his legs and add, "But trousers? Why they limit the mind! They suffocate! They contain! They most certainly do not express." And before Regulus can open his mouth to retaliate, "Most importantly, I find them uncomfortable."
Alphard will play the piano in the middle of the night when he can't sleep. And this keeps Regulus up 😅 so he, in turn, becomes a coffee gremlin. Sometimes, Regulus will sit beside him and play along. Their first composition is titled, "Yearning for a blue, blue, sky"
They have their uncle and nephew days filled with cringe activities that Alphard wants to do.
• build a cottage together (Alphard sprains his ankle)
• go camping but with muggle equipment only (Regulus DESPISES THIS because he doesn't like getting sweaty. He also doesn't like labor. So, he secretly starts a fire with an incendio when he thinks Alphard isn't looking. Alphard saw, of course. He hides both their wands away until the trip is over. But UH OH! he forgets where he put them, so they look for them FOR HOURS. By the time they find their wands Regulus is so cross with him. Won't even look at him. He's so mad.)
• write letters to each other (Regulus is bad at articulating feelings with an adult so he draws Alphard little doodles in his card instead and his uncle lets this slide. Regulus isn't good at drawing, so they don't look nice at all but this is still easier than telling an adult how he feels. One time they do letters again, Regulus is angry — so he draws Alphard a squiggly mess of an angry black blob.)
• try muggle divination (a magic 8ball)
Regulus learns what unconditional love looks like. Regulus comes to understand what true safety feels like. Regulus comes to terms with what it means to be human and make mistakes. Regulus learns to shed transactional intimacy and support because Alphard, time and time again, has shown up to pick him up — and offer him an unquestioned space in his life and in his heart.
Regulus heals.
And Alphard? He learns to live for someone else. He learns that he too, just like his nephew, had lived a life so bereft of love and compassion. Alphard is forced out his self-hating spirals because caring for his nephew has taken up all his time. He mends his boy's broken heart and unwittingly mends his, too. His house becomes a home. With him, is a French-speaking, twig of a boy with a very short temper. Regulus has become the closest thing he'll have to a son and the thought makes him very happy. Regulus who cares for him, returns his compassion, with a silent, focused energy. Regulus who makes him lists. Regulus who brews potions for his arthritis. Regulus, who buys him his first cane. Regulus, who wordlessly opens all the jars that need to be opened. Regulus who sits and plays piano with him.
*hello, hello! i can't help but write about our favorite boy, Regulus Black, all the time :/ I'm a Black Brothers enthusiast and will rave about them, ALL THE TIME. I write about them too! Click here for more of my stuff: beep boop i bring you reggie feels

Uncle
"Chocolate swirl, right?" Uncle Alphard said, pushing the dish across the table to Sirius.
"What did you get?" Sirius asked, looking curiously at his uncle's ice cream sundae.
"It's a new one…cinnamon cardamom," Alphard said, looking back at Florean Fortescue at the counter and winking. "So…how's the summer going? Potters treating you well?"
"Yeah, of course," Sirius said.
"You're welcome to come stay with me if you want to," Uncle Alphard said.
"Oh..I didn't know," Sirius said shyly, looking up at his uncle. "The Potter's are going on holiday in August…can I come then?"
"Sure. I'd love to have you," Alphard said, pleased. He asked the next question carefully. "Do you want to invite Remus?"
"Oh," Sirius said, squirming a little in his seat. Alphard put his hand on Sirius's arm. "It's ok with me, kid."
"Yeah?" Sirius said, searching his eyes.
"Yeah. It is."
