The Man Who Stood By The Ocean

[Chapter 2]

June, 1992

"Come on, Bruno! We'll miss the show!"

You pull the boy's hand closer as you slip into the crowd, gently pushing through the sea of people. The grip on your hand become tighter as your friend exclaimed something to you, but it's too soft for you to hear it. Glancing to your back, you see Bruno groans when his head was accidentally being hit by someone's elbow, you look at him apologetically but keep moving forward. As you reach the exit from the crowd, your eyes lit up when you see the small parade in the center of the city park. Soldiers—or the men in uniform formed a harmonious lines, with one man in the very front, holding a ceremonial mace in his hand. Everyone who watched it was captured by the lines of well-organized parade, somehow it gave them a sense of proud to the nation.

As the green-white-red flag of Italy waving proudly in the air, a clear shout rings from the platform. With that, people cheers as Festa della Repubblica is officially reaching its peak, shiver runs down on your body as the spirit of the crowd leaking through your surrounding. Looking to your side, you giggle when you see your friend still rubbing the sore spot on his head.

"Stai bene?" (You alright?) You asked softly, reaching up to touch his head. He hisses when your fingers pressed the painful bump, but didn't move as you stroke his crown.

"Uh—yeah, I guess." He replied with a sulky face, "... I told you to slow down."

"I'm sorry," You kissed the top of his head, "There, it's all better now."

A wide grin betrays you as your lips cracks open when you see your friend become all flustered.

The park in the very heart of Naples is packed with people celebrating the national day of Italy, families are setting up their picnic blanket, and tourists nor civilians are admiring the afterglow of the celebration. The street has become as lively as ever, with many conversation happened at once. You follow Bruno as he walks towards the cotton candy stall, the man behind the cart beams when he saw his new customer.

"Benvenuto! Would you like a cotton candy for one Lira, young man?"

Your friend nods before rummaging through his pocket, taking out a silver coin with the side profile of il Buono printed on the surface. You watch in awe as the man works his magic on creating the fluffy treat, the pink fibers slowly entwined to one another and into a giant castle of cloud.

"Grazie!" Bruno chimes as he exchanged the coin with the fresh cotton candy, he'd then offers the first bite to you as the two of you walks down the street.

You pluck a heaping amount of sugary cotton before stuffing it into your mouth. The treat immediately melt as soon as you bite into it, Bruno just laughed as he wiped the stray sweet fiber off your cheek.

There's a street performance near where you stand, your ear perks at the familiar tune softly playing. As if your curiosity is written on top of your head, your friend just smile before he tugs your hand towards the source of the song. There's a small group of people surrounding the performers, but with the advantage of being kids, you and Bruno could make it to the front line.

A woman with red gypsy skirt taps her feet with the rhythm of the song before she swings gracefully, the floral print fabrics she wore flutters around her body—it reminds you of a gentle wave. With a sharp jingle of tambourine, the woman continues to mesmerize the crowd.

Bruno leaned closer to whisper in your ear, but you were too captured by the dance, you didn't quite catch it at first so you let out a small 'huh?'.

"Look at that sweaty old man across from us." He retold the thing he had just said, you squinted to see where exactly he's pointing at, "He's drooling."

And you found the exact man he just described, a middle-aged man with balding head has a slobber dripping from the corner of his lips while his eyes are still glued to the dancer. You instantly cover your mouth to suppress your giggle before smacking his back, he laughs.

"I had a lot of fun today."

"Me too."

You rolled your head to the side to see the raven-haired boy, and your eyes met with a small grin when you looked at him. The two of you have been laying down on the pier for quite a while, enjoying the rare weather where the sun is hiding behind the clouds. The wind calmly blows from the ocean, and makes his bangs flew gently off from his face. A sheer of pink tinted his cheek as a result of being exposed to the sun for a little too long, but you bet he could say the same to you.

"You know," You muttered, "We should've had self control."

Bruno breaks into giggle.

"Yeah, maybe we really should have." He replied before he groans when he tries to sit up, rubbing his belly. "Dios mío, I'm so full."

"Of course you are full, you ate so many zeppole and I could hardly got one bite!"

"And you ate my fried calamari more than half." He smirks when your face flushed in red, "I'd say we're even."

You pouted, "It's not fair..."

Joining your friend to sky gazing, you rose up and instantly regret for getting up too fast as it upsets your stomach just a little. You huffed, but complain nothing about it. Comfortable silence fills between the two of you as the seagull's call makes the most sound aside from the rolling waves. Bruno took a glance to your figure before his eyes fall to his lap, seemingly preoccupied by his thoughts. You asked him what's wrong, but he just replied with a simple 'I feel bloated'.

"Oh, it's almost 6 PM!" You blurted out when you see your watch, "I gotta go."

You missed to see a pang of dismay on his face as you were too occupied to get up and straighten your shorts, but it quickly vanishes when your eyes returned to him.

"Oh, I see." He spoke as he got up, "I'll walk you home."

"You don't have to," You shook your head, "My ma will kill me if she saw me with a boy." You smile sheepishly, "Besides, your father must be worried about you too."

Bruno didn't like the idea of you walking alone, but he has to admit that you were also right. His dad must be worried about him, and maybe he's already home by now. Although it's almost high season in Naples, there's barely anyone renting his father's boat so his father has been spending most of his days at home.

"Okay, be careful on your way home."

He hugged you in the way he used to when it's time to go home, you closed your eyes as you enjoy the warm gesture from your best friend.

"I'll see you tomorrow at the bookstore."

As you walked away from him, you look back over your shoulder. Bruno still stands by the sea with his eyes fixed on you, your breath hitched when you witness such adoration, determination, and chaste love pouring out from his gaze. Was the fondness in his eyes only shown whenever you said goodbye? Or has it always been there whenever you weren't looking?

You force yourself to smile and give him a little wave, hoping it'd be enough to mask your confounded heart. He returned your gesture with a gentle smile, so gentle that your chest tighten with fear it'd break once you turn your back on him.

And you went home that day with a daydream about you and him, not knowing it'd be the last time you'll ever see the innocent boy your heart longed for.

You waited at the bookstore just as you promised, yet he never came. You had read all the books you've been buried at the lowest in the pile, but the words slowly became inexplicable as your mind drifts to somewhere else. The first day without him made you stomping with anger as you curse him for not coming as he promised, but your head become clear once you calmed down. Tomorrow, he'll come.

And you told that to yourself the next day, and the day after, and days after until terrifying realization crashed into you. You didn't know where he lives, you didn't know any of his family member, you didn't know where to find him. You didn't know anything about him at all.

A horrified cry escaped your lips when you realized you might never be able to meet him anymore. You lost him, you've lost him.

The door of your room slammed open as your confused, but alarmed mother comes into your room. She was shocked when she saw you broke down on the floor, with your hands on your face as tears escape from between the gap of your fingers.

Your mother instinctively cradles you into her arm as she tries to ask you what's wrong, but her question only meets with incoherent wails. You want to speak, you want to tell her everything, but you're choked on your words.

In the arm of your mother, all of your fear, your heartache you've been holding bursts out like an open floodgate. Two weeks and three days after his missing, you couldn't bear to think that the tomorrow you both promised might never come.

Your matchup is: Tendou Satori

How you met: It’s a happy accident, because both you and Tendou lay your hands on the last volume of Weekly Shounen Jump in the bookstore at the same time. I feel like Tendou would try to convince you that he needs the magazine but eventually you come to the compromise of splitting the cost of the magazine between the two of you. Since Tendou will probably end up lending Shounen Jump to Ushijima (who takes forever bc he reads the ADVERTISEMENTS) he lets you have the magazine first and gives you his number so you can call him after you’re finished. He thinks he’s slick but he isn’t. 

Your first date: Happens after the Spring Tournament, after he has nothing to do because he’s done with college entrance exams. Since you both go to Shiratorizawa and live in the dorms, he has to get creative with how to go on dates late at night. For your first date the two of you sneak into the home economics/cooking classroom late at night to bake a lot of different things. Tendou really wants to try making handmade chocolates (your first date with him probably is probably part of the reason he eventually becomes a chocolatier) and the two of you end up making a huge mess and stay up super late clearing up everything before sprinting back to the dorms. For the rest of the week you have delicious sweets and baked treats to munch on while studying. 

Your first kiss: Graduation day. You’re in the year below him, so when they graduate in the spring you’re there for his graduation ceremony. You haven’t been dating for that long + he’s going off to university (although he’s close enough to visit) so you’ve been a bit worried about what happens after he leaves Shiratorizawa. Tendou, being the observant person he is, has definitely noticed + has an idea for why you’ve been acting a bit off lately. After he gets his diploma, he immediately finds you and drags you to a more secluded part of school. He takes one of your hands and presses his second button into your palm, his other hand cupping your face as he leans in to press the most tender kiss on your lips. Both of you are a little bit teary eyed afterwards.

Anniversary: Somehow manages to get you tickets to Jump Festa/Comiket/Anime Japan Expo and books a whole weekend in Tokyo so the two of you can go attend the event. Since you met and bonded over your love of anime/manga so he wants to do something to commemorate that. I feel like you two would have so much fun doing a couple’s cosplay for the event - you guys also definitely take time to go to karaoke. Tendou opens up his wallet big time and you both impulse buy a lot of anime merch haha. At the end of the weekend you’re both tired and pass out on the train home. You fall asleep leaning on his shoulder, hands intertwined on your lap. 

How they propose: Fast forward a few years, where Tendou decides to go overseas to continue pursuing his career as a chocolatier. He just bought his first shop in Paris, and the two of you are nervous about his future. You’ve finally managed to get a week off work, so you’re spending your vacation with him in France. One night, Tendou brings you to his empty store, which is still under construction. He shows you all the new equipment and his plans for what it will look like. After the impromptu tour, he takes a chocolate sphere out of the fridge, asking you to taste test a new dessert of his. When you melt the chocolate sphere, you see a silver ring glinting back at you. You say yes, tackling him to the floor in a hug. 

What your wedding looks like: You decide to get married back in Japan, since most of your friends and family are closer to Japan compared to Paris. You get married in Tokyo so you can book a large venue for everyone the two of you want to invite. Everyone and anyone Tendou feels close with gets an invitation in the mail. Of course, Ushijima is part of the wedding party, Semi as well. Tendou would want the wedding to be fun, and after the formal ceremony, the reception/afterparty is wild. The desserts/snacks are courtesy of himself/his company and the two of you have a massive 5 tier chocolate cake custom made for the wedding. Free flow bar as well, because it’s funny to see your old friends get tipsy.

Newlywed/domestic hc: You eventually are able to find work in Paris, and the two of you move into a cozy studio apartment in the Oberkampf neighborhood. You often drop by his shop on your lunch break to surprise him, and the two of you like to grab lunch at one of the cafe’s near Canal Sanit-Martin. His favorite part of living with you is lazy mornings, where the two of you wake up to the sun coming in through your blinds. Loves having breakfast in bed with you on the weekends and just enjoying the fresh air coming in from your open windows.

Hello. I hope you're doing well. I know it's stressful for you right now and I don't want you to have to answer this right away if you're feeling a bit down. Maybe later. But my question is many times when it comes to JM and JK people say everything's in their body language, especially Jungkook as he is so easy to read and can't really mask emotions, so what about their body language is special and different , and is their a consistency to it(esp.JK ) that we can come to a conclusion.

Thank you for your concern! I’m doing okay. Thank you for the lovely ask. I hope my other Anons will forgive me for answering yours before theirs but this topic has been on my mind recently so I want to address it while my thoughts are somewhat organized.

What I’ll talk about in this ask is one of the main, if not the main reason I believe that if there’s a person in BTS for whom JK might have feelings, that is Jimin.

To me KM are different in just about everything - body language, variety, consistency and magnitude of moments, skinship, members’ reactions. Since you mention Jungkook in particular, my answer will be focused on him. 

First: how Jungkook looks at Jimin

Jungkook have amazing, expressive, gorgeous eyes (my favorite thing about his appearance). They’re literally the windows to his soul. As an introverted and introspective person, he is not that big on words but he is an avid observer. He watches attentively, sometimes he stares or spaces out and his gaze can be quite intense. At times people are too quick to interpret his tendency to observe as something romantic or “being whipped”, which is not necessarily true, as he watches fondly all of his hyungs and his eyes are naturally very expressive.

The difference with Jimin is that Jungkook’s eyes(and camera, but that’s another story) are drawn to him as if to a magnet. Kook always makes sure to watch closely when it’s Jimin’s time in the spotlight - during speeches, interviews, games, concerts. If JM isn’t in his direct line of sight he will turn his head at 180, angle his whole body towards him or change positions entirely, just so that he has can see him. Whereas other people will be looking at the audience or the camera, Jungkook’s attention will be on Jimin. It will be on him even if Jimin is not the one talking, even when they’re in a room full of people. Instead of looking at the speaker, often JK will still be looking at Jimin and his reactions. His eyes seek and follow Jimin basically wherever or whenever they find themselves.

Then there’s the way Jungkook looks at JM: his eyes travel all over Jimin’s features and body - eyes, nose, lips, eyes again, as if memorizing his face for posterity. The expression that Kook has while gazing at Jimin is also one of a kind. He has the softest, most fond and dazed smile on his face, which I call  “The Jimin smile” because most often than not the reason behind it is JM. Especially when Jimin is smiling or laughing. I don’t think Jungkook knows how to look away from a smiling Jimin, to be honest, or that he even wants to.

In short, Jungkook looks at Jimin in the way everyone wants to be looked at - as if he’s savoring him and  never wants to look away.

Next: Satellite Jeon

This name isn’t a coincidence, the boy has earned it. If Jungkook is across the stage from Jimin, he will go all the way to the other side. If he’s at the other end from JM in the beginning of a Run episode, by the end of it he will be next to him. If Jimin is being slow, Jungkook will wait. He will literally move a member or shoo him away if he has to. If he is far away, he will get close and if he is close, he will move even closer. If he absolutely can’t move, he will at least turn his head or angle his body towards Jimin or follow him with his eyes.

Not that they can’t be away or sit apart but I think Jungkook finds great comfort from Jimin’s presence, especially in front of the cameras. Kookie can be very hyper and extra but mainly in front of his hyungs and in a comfortable setting. During interviews especially he can often be seen letting his hyungs lead the conversation, while he chimes in from time to time and comfortably ‘hides’ in the back the rest of the time, preferably next to or directly behind Jimin. In fact, I think he likes standing behind Jimin so much because he feels emotionally safe this way, while also taking a physically protective stance to Jimin.

It’s not just the way JK prefers to stay close to him that indicates the supportive role Jimin plays. Often during video messages Kook will be at the center with Jimin to his left and he will turn his head to JM when talking - Jimin provides him with positive feedback and reassurance.

Jimin is an emotionally mature person with a great EQ, so it’s no suprise he is a great source of comfort for Kook. This is probably while JK tends to follow him around and enjoys his company so much, together with their many shared interests and hobbies and general compatability, of course. 

3rd: Attentiveness

Kook doesn’t only know Jimin’s preferences and taste (do you know that Jimin likes sour things? do YOU? DO YOU?) but he also pays a lof of attention to him in general. After all how else will he be able to imitate perfectly everything JM does, even his solo choreographies? The boy is attentive as hell. He knew when Jimin needed help with fixing the net or setting up the karaoke in the last Run ep even before JM said a word and was very eager to help him. They definitely are very in tune with each other even with no words exchanged.

Kook knows when Jimin is stressed and exactly how to make him laugh, even if that means making a fool of himself in the process. He acts extra just to see him laugh and best believe he definitely pays attention to Jimin’s reaction. It’s like it’s his life goal to make his “Jiminie hyung” happy at least once a day and have some of his attention, in a positive way of course.

This can definitely be noticed in BTS Run. When KM are in different teams , they will act goofy and more hyper and when they’re paired together, they’re calmer and having a sort of silent communication. We can witness that especially clearly in the Festa Dinner, where we see a tipsy, giggly Jimin and a quiter Jungkook, pouring his hyung drinks and cutting the pizza for him. That leads back to my point that Jimin is an emotional anchor for Kook. JM is the more extroverted of the two and he knows Kookie very well, so both of them are content with him leading the conversation and turning the spotlight to JK at times, making sure he is heard and is receiving the appropriate amount of attention while also ensuring Jungkook is feeling comfortable and not pressured. A true dream team.

4th: Softness

Pretty much everyone and their mother has noticed by now that Jungkook is very gentle with Jimin, especially in comparison to his other hyungs. He may manhandle him from time to time but there’s no trace left of the child Jungkook who once pushed Jimin into a wall. Nowadays, JK is very soft in his physical handling of his “tiny hyung”. 

With another member he would show a more “aggressive” side, some (playful) punches or kicks, throw them in the pool or shove them aside during a game but with Jimin? No, no, no, sir. With JM he’s all gently “pushing him away” (while also caressing his waist and elbow and looking completely smitten), letting him first during games or giving him the pen he was just about to sign with, offering him his water bottle before drinking himself..

Even in SP 2017 when he was “dragging” JM to the pool, he was gentle. He could have pushed him or thrown him in but instead Kook just sort of held his leg and fought him playfully. It was the same when they were in the water when Jimin was on the unicorn. JK had tipped the float forwards and was splashing water at Jimin but he was still keeping the unicorn stable and making sure JM didn’t fall in.

Even the way KM talk to each other is soft -  in hushed, low, gentle, whispery voices, always in their own world. I’ve never heard Jungkook talk to anyone else with the same soft tone except for Jimin. I’ve also never heard him use the same voice as when calling “Jimin-ssi” or laying the aegyo so thick to recreate drama lines. KM don’t even have to touch and the air around them still feels different. Which bring me to my

Next point: Skinship

I’m on the opinion that skin ship is and never will be of the biggest importance to determine what and who is “real” or not. It’s a typical kpop thing, besides BTS in particular are very comfortable physically with each other, so it doesn’t really serve as much of an “evidence” when they hug or hold hands.

Kook in particular have never been an avid instigator of it. He definitely doesn’t mind it, as he is very comfortable with his hyungs but he doesn’t really initiate it that much either. He allows it most of the times with no problem (like Hobi kissing him on the neck or Tae patting his butt/ruffling his hair) and would do it himself when he wants to, especially when the situation calls for it (at the Japanese Musters) but he’s not naturally as touchy as Jimin, Tae or Hobi.

Furthermore, KM was never an excessively skin ship-y couple and the ship has never been strongly based on that. They’ve always been a different type of a couple, known for their “subtle” moments and not blatant skinship, even though they have plenty of awesome moments such as back hugs, neck grabs etc. Although they don’t seem “subtle” at all now and are turning more into the “how can we be any more annoyingly obvious” pair, skinship wasn’t and still isn’t the  most interesting or convincing thing about them  (at least to me).

That being said, I still find some things about their skinship and Kook’s reactions to it intriguing.

I’ve never seen JK as possessive as some people make him out to be but his reactions and behavior during Wings/BS&T era are interesting to me. We saw a lot of back hugs, wrist grabbing and tongue-in-cheek action then, that we don’t observe nowadays. I wouldn’t say he was “possessive” per se but he was sort of making a statement in late 2016/early 2017, which came from a place of some uncertainty, I think.

KM skinship now and then is very different, though. Now it lacks that sense of making a statement. They are still very comfortable with each other, borderline if I say so myself considering how Jungkook let JM finger his butt several time on stage and even smiled through it but now they’re more mindful, it seems. We know they’re inseparable backstage, we know of their antics on shows recording and airports but those things seem to happen when KM know they won’t be recorded. I don’t think they’re exactly hiding because we still see plenty of moments but they also don’t feel the need to be showy, too. As I said, they’re more mindful, careful. 

Which is interesting because if they really were a ploy to hide another couple in the group, surely they would have taken every opportunity to be touchy with each other, wouldn’t they? Doesn’t make much sense but then again that whole theory doesn’t make sense so..

I also find fascinating how Jungkook gets shy or flustered with Jimin. He said himself that he enjoys Jimin’s  shamelessness a lot but he also gets “hot and bothered” by it as well. He loses his words at times when Jimin really gazes at him with that look or when JM sings Serendipity to him or when Kook is looking at Jimin but gets caught and quickly turns his head. It doesn’t have to mean much but to me it’s cute how JK can get flustered by Jimin’s advances, yet he still enjoys them a lot. He doesn’t really act that way with other people. He also doesn’t act teasingly *cough flirts cough* with them as he does with Jimin. It’s a highly entertaining part of their dynamics for me.

I know someone might come at me now, saying how Jungkook has done this or that with someone else, which brings me to my next very big point -

Consistency

Sure, none of the things I mentioned are necessarily exclusive to KM. You can see Jungkook act in similar ways with someone that is not JM but it all comes down to the bigger picture at the end.

The majority of times Jungkook behaves in the ways I mentioned is towards Jimin and even though he may exhibit similar behavior with the other members, it’s not that often, consistent or focused or just one person.

He may gaze fondly at a member, be gentle with them, try to make them laugh or hug them but only with Jimin these things are a constant pattern in his behavior, a given.

This is not how he acts just from time to time; this is basically his whole behavior towards Jimin.

This is how Jungkook is with him almost all of the time (as far as we can tell from the sources he have). Everything I talk about you can clearly see in basically every interaction between them.

Other ships/pairs may have some of these puzzle pieces but *to me*, none of them have the whole picture Jimin and Jungkook have.

Apart from the consistency in behaviour and moments, there’s also the variety and magnitude of them.

Jimn and Jungkook’s interactions are all over the spectrum - from soft touches through playfulness, intense eye contact and teasing to similar interests and opinions and strong support. Their bond is very deep and their connection is multidimensional.

Some of their moments are also one of the biggest from any ship in Bangtan and what’s more, most of them have happened off-camera - the white suits slow dance back hug (whose origins are unknown to this day), off-schedule - the Tokyo trip, completely unprompted - “Let’s go baby”, their vlives and when no-one expected them - GCFt. 

The biggest things have happened off the stage and came from JK and JM themselves.

Jungkook really can’t hide but I also don’t think that he wants to at this point. Afterall, everything I described can be seen in Jungkook’s videos - his bias towards Jimin, his fondness, his love for Jimin’s laugh and smile and even his orbiting around him. An artist’s work is often a mirror for their emotions so it’s really not surprising. At this point we’re not talking about “analysing” JK’s behavior or making guesses, we’re talking facts here. 

What’s there to speculate about when he’s bared it all in his videos?

I don’t know what all of it means, that is for Jungkook (and possibly Jimin) to know but we can all agree this ain’t no ordinary ship we’re sailing on. It’s not even a luxury yacht to me anymore (that’s too weak of a word for it). It’s a whole damn aircraft carrier - strong and armed, seasoned through battles and damn ready to launch a surprise attack, on water and air. It’s a whole beast.

In conclusion:Jungkook loving Jimin is canon

Elgin, Kanemitsu Leave NJPW; Naito in CMLL, Costa Rica; Taguchi, Shota in TAKA + Taichi Produce 3/31; Juice v. Bully Ray at G1 Supercard Confirmed, But Maybe Suzuki Too?; This Week’s NJPW on AXS: 3 Hour New Japan Cup Marathon

This is gonna be a long one, as I’m shoehorning in a LOT of news from the last week right before I head to NYC for G1 Supercard. Why not listen to my podcast about it above/below?

Some sad news from NJPW late last night, as it was announced that Young Lion Teruaki Kanemitsu has departed from New Japan. Kanemitsu, 26, debuted on 1/3/2016 at that year’s Fan Festa, in a losing effort to Sho Tanaka (SHO, duh). Kanemitsu suffered a cervical spinal injury in November of that year as well, and was on the shelf for 25 months, returning in a tag match at the second Road to Tokyo Dome show last year on 12/18/2018. However, it seems that would be it for him, as he never had another match since. Who knows if he will return to wrestling in another promotion, or if he is done for good. Whatever the case, we wish him well in his life post-NJPW.

In less tragic news, NJPW also announced the departure of Michael Elgin, and no, I am not going to cry about it. Elgin has been on the periphery of NJPW for quite some time: he was never booked on any USA shows since 2018, with NJPW knowing full well how toxic he was Stateside due to the controversy concerning his conduct regarding an alleged victim of sexual assault by one of Elgin’s students in the St. Louis area. 

Even now, despite some high profile bookings in CMLL last year, it seems the only company Elgin can get regular work in is IWA Mid-South, run by another known scumbag in Ian Rotten. And while there has since been some information indicating that the accuser has also been up to some scumbaggery, that doesn’t negate Aaron Frobel’s own very public scumbaggery in any way shape or form. To my knowledge he is still the only wrestler to be repeatedly told to fuck off during a live NJPWWorld stream by other wrestlers. 

There are reports out there that Elgin knew he wasn’t going to be booked for this year’s G1 Climax, and that he and NJPW came to mutual terms as of 3/31/2019. But let’s face it: bar brief IWGP Intercontinental and NEVER Openweight title reigns, and some very good matches during G1 Climaxes past, he wasn’t going to be much of a big time player following the World Tag League 2017 debacle, and a huge part of (American, internet) fandom didn’t want to see him in NJPW. It’s done now. There are rumors he may try to get in with another Japanese promotion, but honestly I hope not. Fuck Michael Elgin.

Not one to reimain idle, Tetsuya Naito made his way to this part of the world a week early. He and his Ingobernables brethren Rush & Terrible teamed in the main event of last Friday night’s Arena Mexico show in CMLL, losing in straight falls (2nd by DQ) to Volador Jr., Caristico & Valiente. The Ingobs further humiliated Caristico and Valiente by unmasking them post-match. It’s not essential viewing at all, but fun. You can see that on CMLL’s official YouTube channel.

The next night, Naito appeared at the 5th Anniversary show for the Costa Rica Wrestling Embassy promotion, defeating head trainer Escualo via Destino in the main event. That match has not been made available as yet; it could come on NJPWWorld, but who knows. CMLL wrestler Esfinge also appeared as a substitute for the injured Shigeo Okumura, who was previously booked for this event.

This past Sunday, another TAKA + Taichi Produce show happened at Tokyo Shinkiba 1stRING. Called TAKATaichi House In Shinkiba, it was mostly your average Japanese indie show, however the main event featured Ryusuke Taguchi & Shota Umino taking on the Suzuki-gun pair of TAKA & Taichi. The NJPW pair were victorious in the end. Once again, not sure if this one made tape or not. Stay tuned.

Yesterday it was confirmed that IWGP US Heavyweight champion Juice Robinson answered the Open Challenge for a NYC Street Fight by Bully Ray, and the match was made official. So there’s that. However there is some speculation that Juice may not be the only one, following this cryptic tweet from Minoru Suzuki (with translation). Suzuki is not officially booked at G1 Supercard. We know he will be in the area, as he is fighting Josh Barnett in the main event of the GCW Josh Barnett’s Bloodsport show on Thursday in New Jersey, and will probably show up for the RevPro show on Friday too. So there’s really no reason for Suzuki to not be part of G1 Supercard, and it’s this or the Honor Rumble pre-show match. 

Finally, NJPW on AXS goes the distance this week, with a three hour marathon of new episodes focusing on the later rounds of the New Japan Cup. The advertised matches this week are:

8pm EDT / 7pm CDT: Kazuchika Okada v. Will Ospreay, 3/20 Shizuoka Twin Messe; Hiroshi Tanahashi v. Zack Sabre Jr., 3/21 Shizuoka Act City Hamamatsu 9pm EDT / 8pm CDT: New Japan Cup Semifinals, 3/23 Niigata Aore Nagaoka 10pm EDT / 9pm CDT: New Japan Cup Final, 3/24 Niigata Aore Nagaoka

Next week they are due to start showing matches from G1 Supercard, starting with Jay White v. Kazuchika Okada for the IWGP Heavyweight title, so that should be fun.

And with that, I am out. Hitting the road for NYC very early on Thursday morning in order to make it there in time for DDT Coming to America at La Boom on Thursday night, followed immediately by Kaiju Big Battel at the same place. I will also be hitting the Festival of Honor meet & greets on Friday before going to the RevPro show on Friday. Saturday will be G1 Supercard, naturally, but not before I finally get to see my favorite wrestler of all time, The Great Muta, at the House of Glory event in Queens. I hope to see and meet some of you there. Look for the old bearded guy probably wearing an LIJ hoodie. January

In the beginning of January my family and I went skiing in Bansko. The highlight of our trip was that the Wi-Fi in our hotel was not working properly. It is amazing how more valuable our time together was during those days. We laughed, shared stories, picked on each other and played different games. This month taught me the importance of communication. It is the absolute cornerstone of every relationship in life.

February

February was the month of travel. My best friends and I attended Harvard Model United Nations and spent an amazing week in Boston and New York. Hana and I also celebrated our 22nd birthdays in Boston and got a cake delivery in our hotel room from our friend Festa. This was beyond thoughtful of her.

The highlight of this month was the acceptance letter from London School of Economics. We were stuck in the metro in New York, and while we were waiting I decided to check my email. Bam! I got accepted! I cried so much I can’t even remember. Oh and by the way, New York was breathtaking. In February I learned the importance of networking. Networking is all about building strong and smart relationships.

  March

March was a little bit more boring. I worked on my thesis and also dealt with some health issues, but all turned out great. To be honest, I can’t recall any particular event about this month. But still, March taught me that it is okay to just chill sometimes. We are all constantly running around from one place to another and waking up to do exactly what we did the day before. It is important to live your life mindfully, slowly and with awareness. Less doing, more being.

April

My friends and I went to an Escape Room in Budapest. In case you don’t know, escape rooms are puzzles and riddles inside a room using clues, hints and strategies. Our challenge was to escape from an “Island” in 60 minutes by trying to find hidden keys, hidden riddles and lots of other exciting stuff. It was an amazing experience, and I am so glad I got to do it with my friends. This month taught me the importance of making and spending time with your friends. Although we had exams and stress, we all decided to go on a trip and spend the last days of our senior year together.

May

This month was probably the highlight of my whole year. I graduated. But I wasn’t excited only because I graduated, but because I was selected as the Keynote Speaker and I kept it a secret from my parents. I wanted my speech to be a surprise because I dedicate all my success to my parents and wanted them to feel exceptional. And I did that, I made them feel exceptional and proud. This month has taught me that no matter how hard the road gets, hard work always always always pays off, and it is one of the best feelings in the world.

June

My family and I took a road trip together. Even though I live with my parents and see them every single day, I still feel like when we travel together we learn more about one another. I guess it is all because we are always growing, learning new stuff and making new experiences. June taught me to constantly be curious of my surroundings, learn about people, learn different perspectives. It taught me to continue seeking knowledge, to learn and to quench my curiosity.

July

This month I went outside my comfort zone and decided to start a youtube channel. I always wanted to do blogs but always felt a little bit shy and uncomfortable to share videos of myself online. When I shared my first video I got positive feedback that motivated me to continue and share other videos. I even had an amazing collaboration with Intersport and managed to publish two videos as part of a “Sweat in the City” project. This month taught me that our intentions should be kept close so we can focus our energy on them. If there is anything you want to try and do, do it! You will never know if you like it or not if you don’t try it.

August

August was the month of sea. I enjoyed the sun, the food and the waves. Nothing else mattered. I also started meditating regularly. On August I learned how to accept and understand myself by not letting this limit what I can be. I treated myself with love. I took care of myself.

September

On September I was feeling a little bit down. I had just graduated, spent an amazing summer and was waiting for other things to happen. I didn’t know what I was waiting for though. I decided to apply for a job. Well, 10 jobs to be precise. I was ready to work. September was a month of reflection, where I learned something interesting about myself. I can’t spend a long time doing nothing, I always need to have something to do otherwise I feel ineffective and unproductive.

October

On October I got a new job at a Digital Marketing Agency. To be honest, I never expected them to call me for an interview because I wasn’t meeting all of the requirements, and I was very surprised when they did. Everything went smoothly and I started working on 16th of October. This month taught me that we should never underestimate ourselves and our abilities. We should always know our worth.

November

November was a month of work and stress. I was adapting to the work environment, schedule and requirements, and it honestly felt like I was on a rollercoaster. Everything was going too fast but I managed to create new habits and fit them to my new lifestyle. I started working out at 6am, learn German and still devote what time I had left to my family and friends. I can’t lie, it was hard, but now it all turned out great. This month I learned to appreciate the value of the things I produce, because through creation I connect. I want my creativity, identity and my own pulse to always be present in everything I do, even if I am working for a client who is completely out of tune with what I believe in.

December

On December I got to travel with my best friend. We spent a few days in Amsterdam, a day in Hague and a day in Brussels. I felt beyond lucky to have the opportunity of traveling with her. This month I learned to appreciate the beauty and fragility of life. I tried to not take things for granted.

Today What if we looked at a day the same way as we look at a year? What if we lay down in our bed one day and think of our day this way:

“Well, today was amazing because I managed to finish this task, go to this place, drink this juice, eat this burger, kiss this person etc… Today I learned that the meat in the burger should not be burned, and kissing someone after eating is not a good idea. Haha”

Maybe if we looked at our days the same way we look at the whole year, we would feel more grateful, aware and happy with our lives. Know what I’m saying?
