2020 October Update

So... we've launched. And our launch was... actually kind of... bad...

This is a dev blog, so I'll speak on it. But before that, we do have the game's steam page up. If you're anticipating the PC release, please do visit the steam page and add it to your wish list. It would help us a lot.

So what didn't go so well?

1. We launched in Nintendo's Americas and Europe territory. If you've been following the release, you'd know that America got the game first. We didn't move to launch in Europe at all since I thought the EFIGS languages (English, French, Italian, German, Spanish) were pre-requisites for Europe. By the time I learned that this wasn't necessarily the case, and attempted to course correct, the damage was done. We had half the allotment of keys to do outreach, and maybe some European outlets that would've covered us, did not.

2. When the game launched, rather than a victory lap, what we experienced was more of a public lashing. We did get some reviews that praised the game highly, but just as many reviews lampooned the game for its high difficulty or other failings. I've since released two patches (or 3, depending on how you count it) to address the difficulty. A lot of overnighters. If you recall in the last blog post, I thought it'd be a good start if we got 20 or so reviews on Open Critic. But we've only 8 as of this writing, and the aggregate score isn't so hot. So that's a fail by my metric.

3. A publisher reached out to us because they were interested in physically printing the game! Yay! But... to advance our talks, they wanted to see the game's sales numbers to ensure that there's a good chance their investment could be recouped. And unfortunately, the game's sales numbers are pretty low. They backed out :(

Some hard lessons were learned. The biggest lesson for me concerns how well we playtested the game. Looking at the original playtester list, it's a short list. You may recall from a previous blog post that our ability to test was severely hampered by technical limitations. Add to that, a lot of people on this list are objectively really achieved players. We're talking power ranked in Smash Bros, regular tournament goers, and people who've played and bested every Souls game. And as the maker of the game, I am most blind to the game's challenges.

Now, I'm definitely more of the opinion that you prioritize PC development first. I still have some reservations about some stages of PC development. But if you do PC/Steam first, you have the great benefit of being able to do Early Access, which gives you access to a greater testing pool. I now view it as an invaluable part of the equation. If we had been able to do Early Access for 1 or 2 months before release, we probably could have ironed out most of the game's difficulty and balance problems. Hard lessons, indeed.

There were a lot of other notable events that occurred over the past 2 months - the travails of press outreach, realizing my own limits as a developer, feeling defeated and getting back up again, etc. There's too much stuff to chronicle or go into detail. But it wasn't all bad.

Some good things did happen...

We got a publisher to publish for Japan! It came as a huge relief, because clearly, we don't know what the heck we're doing.

The publisher has been an invaluable source of information and feedback. They've recommended some changes to the game to improve user experience. Some of these changes I was hesitant to do at first because they concerned systems I thought integral to the identity of the game. But after trying it, I have to admit, they're good changes.

So a Japanese version of the game was moving ahead. And it looked like that'd be it. I wasn't planning to move forward with any other language translations due to the game's low sales and our funds being depleted.

But, I was approached by a translator who urged me to move ahead with translations. He told me he was willing to work for only a small price initially and then be paid the rest after from a percentage of the game's sales until the cost of the translation was paid in full.

I was surprised translators were willing to work under such a model since it's entirely likely the game's current low sales trajectory would continue and they wouldn't earn back the full cost of translation. But I was also flattered they were willing to take a risk with me. After that, I approached some others with the same hypothetical deal, and long story short, we're now moving forward with French, German, Spanish, Portuguese and Russian translations. As for why these languages in particular, they were languages for whom I had contacts (because they reached out to me at some point in the past). And also because they were deemed more likely to be profitable based on their home country's gaming market/buying habits. I'd be personally happy to have my native language be represented, but it's not expected to be a profitable territory. But if the game does better in the future, it may justify the costs of translation. There could be a chance!

The plan right now is to get the game supporting these first round of languages and then to patch that into the Switch version as well as launch the PC version with these languages - all in December. A lot of things need to align for this to occur, so a delay isn't out of the question. It'll be busy... I'll update the blog again in latter half of December, probably near the game's PC launch date... OR to announce a delay. Let's hope it doesn't come to that.

Fan Support

While the past two months have been grueling, one good thing remains constant - fan art! Thank you everyone who submitted. It means a lot to me and the team!

Big thanks to Pimez who's taken on watching over the reddit community as moderator. He also combs the other communities and makes sure I see every new art piece. Despite juggling his own life and all these tasks, he still found some time to draw.

Pimez's piece reminds us that just because the new game's out doesn't mean we can't still celebrate the original flash game. The jail dog is a dog found only in jail and only in the flash game. I imagine Gail is just tossing a stick, and they're playing fetch.

A new artist to this scene æv draws both the Phoenix logo AND a super cute picture of Gail playing the flute. So precious, you want to pinch her cheek. Even the Sand Drake is enthralled!

Another new artist, beet4ppy arrives on the scene with two pictures! One features a no-nonsense battle-hardened Gail looking stoic and tough! Kinda reminds me of Vinland Saga actually. The other, a more cheerful group composition - I must say I'm a big fan of Fran's classic anime-style eye!

A returning artist, Cody G, returns with a picture depicting the tribulations of cooking. Gotta love Gail's frantic expression! I've heard the complaints, which is why we've added an option to slow the cooking mini-game down. An improved button font is also on the way.

Gamesing with two undertale x phoenotopia crossovers. Thomas being a robot builder makes sense taking a role similar to Alphys. But why is Alex dressed like a clown? Perhaps there is a hidden meaning here...

A new artist, Warotar, draws both a pooki wearing Gail's clothes and Gail wearing pooki clothes. Awww. The pooki is a bit scary - it kinda reminds me of a tragic event in a certain anime. But the Gail is adorable!

POL#5655 submitted this one to KM's discord which made its way to me. Here, a stylized Gail appears unnerved by the dark red eyes stalking her in the background. Are they bats or something more sinister?

A new artist, MilesCPW, arrives on the scene with three rare well-vectorized arts! Love it! One scene depicts Gail balancing a bomb on her head - that's a speedrunning trick I only learned about recently after someone emailed me a video O_O

The other drawing gives us new insight into Katash - he could actually look cute if he wasn't trying to kill you.

And the bees... Okay, this one got a chuckle from me :D

A returning artist roccy_chair draws this heart-warming scene from the beginning of the new game. Aww. Mika doesn't get much screen time for story reasons, so it's nice to see her represented.

UnrealWorld_32 returns with another drawing of Gail in Panselo, this time capturing a more idyllic time. I like the tranquil nature of this piece. And Gail does in fact play the guitar, denoted by the guitar in her room.

Returning artist shafiyahh draws a nice portrait of Prince Leo - looking regal and princely. I like the storybook art style of this piece. It made me immediately think of "the Little Prince" - one of my favorite books actually!

Negativus Core returns with a beautiful group composition of Gail and the gang - flying from a Switch shaped window - totally sensible considering the game is only Switch right now. As usual, I'm impressed by Negativus Core's use of challenging angles to frame a more dynamic shot of the characters. Great job!

And it wasn't only artists bearing the banner. I'd like to give a big shoutout to everyone in all the game's little communities (from the reddit to the discords to this tumblr). I've seen this community help newcomers with gameplay and walkthrough advice, discussions, updating the wiki, and so on. It does bring a smile to my face. Thank you everyone!

Kaitou Joker "Miracle Kurukuru Campaign" Drama CD The Shining Night On Air

Promotional excerpts from the latest drama CD, which has yet to be released.

*Disclaimer: This translation is essentially a first draft. There was an average of one pun per image but I didn't feel like putting effort into them. I’ll do better for the inevitable subs.

□ Radio Show Sound of a radio's dial being tuned. A jingle, followed by the opening BGM. Peacock: "Good evening, everyone. This is Underworld Radio Network, and I'm your host... (higher-pitched) DJ PEACOCK! So, Underworld Radio Network is organizing the Underworld Special Week right now! This diverse project will introduce a selection of shows competing for the highest listener ratings. And the personality who successfully gets the highest ratings will get a fantastic prize from our sponsor...!"

Enter Kaneari. Kaneari: "Ohohoho. As you all already know, I'm the filthy-filthy-filthy rich Mister Kaneari, indeed! I, the super-special sponsor, will be giving out the 'Golden Condenser Mic' made by the Kaneari company. What's more, their show will be made into a regular feature!!" Peacock: "Now which show will take the spot of number one? A heart-pounding and stimulating Special Week is starting!"

□ Sky Joker, living room The sound is cut off with a blip. Hachi: "Huh!? What are you doing, Joker-san?" Joker: "Hmph. Radio is SO dumb." Hachi: "Geez, just because you failed the prelims for the Underworld Special Week show competition..." Joker: "It's not about that, Hachi... This isn't the time right now..." Hachi: "Eh? What's up?" Joker: "The truth is... (grumbling sound) I'm hungry. Curry. I want to eat curry." Hachi: "D'oh. Oh, what am I going to do with you." Joker: "Curry really is number one~"

Joker, chowing down on curry. Joker: "Nom nom. Curry! Delish! Hachi's curry really is the best~!" Hachi, furtively listening to the radio. Hachi: (whispering) "I'll listen to the radio while Joker-san is eating that huge serving of curry I made him." He turns the radio dial. Hachi: "Argh~ The reception's bad~ I can't hear the radio~ But the Shuffle Sisters' show is coming up after Spade-san's show~"

□ Spade and President D's show Spade: "On the night of a full moon, we met on the ocean. Bonds once undone after crossing the ocean are tied once again..."

After a deep breath... he announces the title. Spade: "Spade's Ice Shot Stream~" An elegant BGM begins to play. Spade: "Good evening... This is Spade, Phantom Thief. Happy to see me again? It's Special Week, so we're coming to you live. The listeners who have their messages read during the show will receive an Underworld sticker exclusive to this show. Now seeing as it's Special Week tonight, I've brought in an appropriate guest. Allow me to introduce you. The special guest is..." President D: "I'm President D. It's a pleasure to be here." Spade: "Now we already have a question from a listener, but since we have the opportunity, let's have our guest read it out." President D: "From radio name 'Lucky Steak'..."

□ Queen and Silver's show Silver: "Appearing gracefully again tonight, the Silver Magician Silver Heart and..." Queen: "Queen's..." Silver & Queen: "Phantom Thief Ladio~"

A jingle plays as the two of them clap. Queen: "Good evening, everyone. Merrily presenting you with phantom thief news, it's Queen and Silver Heart's Phantom Thief Ladio! Grandpa?" Silver: "Yes?" Queen: "Just so you know, once we get the highest ratings, I'm going to be taking the treasured Golden Condenser Mic." Silver: "Of course. The best treasure for me is having time to cheerily chat with my adorable granddaughter~" Queen: "Oh come on, Grandpa." Silver: "Ahahaha. Put 'warm' and 'fuzzy' together and that's how I'm feeling right now~ just kidding." Queen: "Yes, yes. All right, let's move onto the mail corner. This week's phantom thief badmouthing~" Silver: "Yay! Fwump fwump! Bam bam!"

□Radio station, hallway The blam of a wall collapsing. Joker & Hachi: "Uwaaah!" A bike revving. Shadow: "The black shadow that paints over the light... My name is Shadow Joker!" Joker: "Shadow!?" Shadow: "My trusty Black Speeder is bucking again tonight. Joker, I knew you'd come here." Joker: "Huh? What, you too!?" Shadow: "I'm not giving up the Golden Condenser Mic. A rain of fresh blood dripping in the dark! Bloody Rain!" The pew pew sound of beams.

Joker: "Waagh, that was dangerous! But wait, you don't have a show either, Shadow! You're not a part of this! Why are you getting in my way!?" Shadow: "It's Rose, y'see. She's an avid listener of Queen's radio show! I can't you get the regular show spot!" Joker: "Huh? What's up with that!?" Hachi: "He really cares for his sister."

□Phoenix & Hosshi's Space Radio Phoenix: (title call) "Galactic quiz show, Phoenix's 'Choose from three'!" Hosshi: "Hosshi!" (echo)

A space-tune jingle plays. Phoenix: "Good evening, everyone on Earth. I'm Akai Tsubasa, also known as the messenger from the Southern Cross, Phoenix!" Hosshi: "Hosshi!" Phoenix: "Hey, Acrux. Apparently people on Earth are listening to this conversation we're having." Hosshi: "Hosshii!" Phoenix: "Now let's ask a question..." Hosshi: "Hosshi!" Phoenix: "Where are we right now? 1, we're in space. 2, we're in sorrow, writing postcards. 3, we're in the state capital. Dub ep5 notes:

Interestingly, this was the first ep Toonami showed a viewer discretion/epilepsy warning at the beginning (and resuming again at the half point). :O For the quick WSRSF flashing during the fights, I can see why though.

EC’s model is again pretty impressive, even got some genuine ‘eyuuu!’ reactions from my mom seeing him, so that’s pretty good, aha. Meanwhile, Phoenix Man’s voice sounds surprisingly dignified like a gentleman. :O I’m not sure what I expected, but it makes him sound well educated so I’m pleasantly ok with this.

For the Garou + Metal Bat fight (which goes by pretty quick), I was expecting a bit more swearing + trash talking banter between them, but at least Garou calls him a nutbag and a jackass (more than once). :P Metal Bat’s Fighting Spirit is rightfully mentioned again too, so yay I’m glad that’s clear. (I also find it really funny how my mom refers to MB as batman, ahflkhg.)

Zenko! :D Her voice is kinda squeaky but still pretty cute and energetic. She also calls Metal Bat ‘big bro Bat.’ (So translated not as Badd, but Bat.) But the best thing is that my mom’s now a fan of her (her fav part of the ep actually)! Cheered ‘Good girl!’ for her when she stood her ground and told them to stop fighting. She also loved her slap that accidentally knocked Metal Bat out. Ahaha got a good laugh outta her from that.

Garou smoothly rejecting the MA invite: ‘Not interested. Piss off.’ He also calls the monsters creeps. ;) Of course, at this point I had to interject and drill my mom with questions like: so if he listens to the little girl, attacks a monster for ‘snooping’ on them (*cough* saves Zenko), and outright rejects the monsters’ invite, then what does that say about him?? ‘I dunno but he sure is rude.’ Heh. XD Aaaanyway, will probably (hopefully) take some of the later eps before her impression about him starts to click together.

Tournament introductions. I had to reassure my mom that she didn’t have to remember all these new characters (cause she was looking a bit lost, except for her lol at Sourface’s name). But she was worried they might have forgotten to introduce Saitama (right before they did, as Charanko). She also wondered about Genos, and yup he wasn’t forgotten either since he joined along to fully support Saitama in the audience. Saitama’s bow tie for his belt got a good laugh, and then an amused ‘What is he doing?’ when Sourface positioned himself right in front (it does look kinda awkward heh) to tie it properly for him.

On top of all those new competitors, there’s a bunch of new monster sightings making the situation outside that much more chaotic too. Martial Gorilla somehow sounds like he’s wheezing, but Super S’s voice sounds pretty noteworthy to me. Different and perhaps a bit deeper/huskier than Fubuki’s (whose voice is already perfect), so I like it. :D Aha and of all the conspicuous things for my mom to notice/comment about Super S, she finds the big heart on her forehead funny. :P

Just as things start heating up on the tournament ring, the credits roll to cut things off. :P ‘Well that was kinda fruitless. We only got these weird introductions.’ Was my mom’s main take away. But! Thankfully Saitama’s ‘match’ and bitchslap is shown after the credits (she barely had time to react and see it aha) with Suiryu noticing he’s the final opponent to look about for. I’m glad we actually get these after credits continuations showing us more content, cause yeah the ep would have been pretty lacking if it had ended there without showing more. Toonami thankfully doesn’t place any ads here, so it just goes from the credits, to the extra scene, into the next ep preview (which showed Genos fighting the cockroach). Which also answers my mom’s previous question wondering about Genos, because with Saitama occupied in the tournament as the monsters are attacking, then Genos has to be the one to step outside and help take care of it, which we’ll see...

Check hers as well, she’s an amazing writer and friend. 1. What takes up too much of your time? Tumblr, my stupid procrastination prone brain and my thesis.

2. What makes your day better? Friends and loved ones, music and these absolute dorks (Channie especially)

3. What’s the best thing that happened to you today? I hopped on the mat today in the early hours of the morning, rain on my window and the neighbours cat peeking at me from his window across the street.

4. What fictional place would you like to go to? Wonderland, bacause it’s “curiouser and curiouser!”

6. Do you have any mental illnesses? Not diagnosed. I do think i might be going through something now.

7. Have you ever experienced sleep paralysis? No, but i have a recurring nightmare: the world is made of black and white paper thin layers. I am a paper thin person walking along a street surrounded by paper thin buildings. I walk for a long time, looking up at the white sky. Until the street ends, there is no more building and i fall into the abyss of a blank page. I have had this dream since the age of 8 or 9 years old. Fear of not being good enough, you say?! Ding, ding, ding!! We got a winner in the back! 8. What musician inspired you the most? I get inspired by music all the time!! One of my all time favourite songs is Spanish Sahara by Foals. Its sublime!

11. What do others notice about you? I am very kind and warm hearted, so I think that’s what people first notice when meeting me. Although I maintain good eye contact, I am also timid and will be quieter if there are very energetic people in the group. When alone, I usually take the first step and try to meet people, but only if i really must. 12. What’s an annoying habit you have? It’s really hard for me to ask for help. I also like to tell detailed descriptions of everything... Couldn’t you tell? 13. Do you still talk to your first love? I’ll text him on his birthday and he does the same to me. We met when we were 10 years old and that childhood friendship remains. But regarding my one and truly deep relationship, no we do not talk, unless we randomly meet.

14. How many exes do you have? I have three exes. The first love who was just an idealized crush on my childhood friend: we dated for 2 weeks during summer break xD Then my first real boyfriend, we met in my first year at university, dated for quite some time, he really loved me and made me love myself a little more. Finally the one i loved too much. I mended his wounds and made him love himself as much as I did. I always say all the love we feel makes our hearts grow bigger. I do not regret loving any of them, I am me now due to them and I would not change it if I could. 15. How many songs are in your playlist? I have way too many playlists for each and every mood... But my favourite songs list on spotify has about 1500 songs! uwu! 16. What instruments can you play? Triangles and flute?! I had mandatory music classes in school... so in reality I can’t really play a instrument...

17. Who do you have the most pictures of? Probably my cat, Sushi. With a second close of my doodles and sketches.

18. Where would you like to go before you die? EVERY WHERE!!! But I really want to go to Japan and Scotland and Iceland and South Korea and New Zealand and i’ll shut up. 19. What’s your zodiac? Capricorn. 20. Do you relate to it? Sort of.

21. What is happiness to you? You know when it’s really cold outside in the winter and you manage to find a sheltered place where no wind can hit you and you still get to feel the warm rays of the winter suns on your skin? You hear the birds outside and you are contempt in that moment, at peace. That is happiness to me. 22. Are you going through anything right now? Yes, I am a bit lost. Trying to finish my thesis and trying to find what I want to do after. It’s liberating but also pretty scary. 23. What’s the worst decision you ever made? It’s a series of small decisions really. It started with going for a phd with the same people i worked in my msc. Should have gone to a different place. Then deciding to come home after a traumatic loss in the family. Should have kept my life going but I stalled it then. (I don’t regret helping my loved ones though).

24. What’s your favourite store? Probably Wishtrend for beauty stuff. Other than that I don’t have any favourite brands/stores. 25. (HALFWAY!) What’s your opinion on abortion? I think everyone is free to decide what they want or need to do. I couldn’t possible judge. If I would it? Probably not.

27. Do you have a favourite album? I don’t think so, I have favourite tunes for different moods and moments in my life. But if threatened with my life, I’d maybe say Total Life Forever from Foals.

28. What do you want for your birthday? It’s such a long time until my birthday comes! But maybe a real EXO ot9 reunion as a goodbye to Minseok?

29. What is most people’s first impression of you? Friendly and easy to open up to, i think.

30. What age do you seem according to most people? In real life, people usually think I am way younger than I am. 31. Where do you keep your phone when you’re sleeping? In the crook of my bed, between the mattress and the bed frame.

32. What word do you say the most? No idea really! 33. What’s the oldest age you’d date? 40s? I don’t think too much about age actually.

34. What’s the youngest age you’d date? 20s? Again not very important to me. Love is love, whomever, whenever and wherever <3

35. What job / career do most people say would suit you? I don’t know! People always say i don’t totally fit in anything... so there’s that. If you have an idea please let me know! 36. I’d like to live around the world, every few months a different place and get to know different cultures.

38. What is your current favourite song? I’ve been obsessed with RM’s intro/teaser song, Map of the Soul: Persona. (I’m not even a bts fan, but this music and lyrics just touched me a lot.)

40. What are you excited for? I’m visiting some friends in Granada in a couple of weeks. Yay, tapas!

41. Are you a better talker or listener? Normally I am a better listener. But there are a few people to whom i open like a book. Either words flow right out of me without even thinking or they see throw me. Those truly are my people.

42. What is the last productive thing you did? Prepped meals and cleaned the kitchen. Open the folder and file of my thesis. Read the latest chapter I wrote. 43. What do you want for Christmas? Well, just like for my birthday, there is still such a long time to it! But let’s say i want to have already finish this part of my life and want to find my next adventure.

44. What class do you get the best grades in? No more exams! Ehehe! But I used to have good grades at everything. Physical Education was my lowest mark i think.

45. On a scale of 1-10 how do you feel right now? Right now, a 4? I have a headache.

46. What can you see yourself doing in 10 years? Smiling? :D I want to be happy in my own skin. To feel contempt in my life, doing something that gives me a sense of purpose and having time to share and enjoy with my friends and family. 47. When did you get your first heartbreak? Oh my kintsugi heart has been broken quiet a lot. By friends and lovers and even by myself. I keep patching it up with gold dreams though. 48. At what age do you wanna be married? I will only want to be married if i find the one. So until then I guess.

49. What career did you want to have as a child? I wanted to be an astronaut and a ballerina. Preferably both!

50. What do you crave right now? Just sitting somewhere and listening to Yeol play the guitar.

I’m finally back in the States and have free access to Tumblr! Yay! That said, I’ll probably be updating far less frequently in the next six months or so, mostly because of academia (sobs) but there’s also a bit more on that under the cut, if you guys are interested.

Something I’ve noticed is that most of the time the shows that I end up loving aren’t exactly the ones I spend months anticipating, but stuff that gets attention...somehow.

Anyway, anyway, onto my “personal” spiel under the cut:

I’m a dumb person and got into a long-distance relationship! \^o^/

I think it counts as a whirlwind relationship because a lot happened in freaking less than two weeks (*giggles*). But it felt so natural too, so coming back to watch dramas, I’m really all, “I personally had the better experience.” \^o^/

It’s definitely rather grating, to have to leave when we’re technically at our most passionate stage, but we’ve been video-chatting every day so far. I know and have heard of how long distance usually doesn’t work—mostly because of academic stress, which both of us have plenty of. D:

But I also think he’s definitely the best so far (okay, isn’t that what everyone thinks in a new relationship?), and right now I’m in that stage of love and euphoria, so don’t mind me.

(Um...basically I have considerably less time to watch and blog about dramas, but we’ll see.)

Lots of things going on!

Music Stuff

Music music music. Finished up a commission, and will need to try to quickly knock out two more (short) ones in the early part of December. Also, ~Monthlies 2018.11~ is released! Was really fun drawing the cute quail for that album cover.

Pottermore Stuff

I forgot to mention a long time ago that I got around to taking the Pottermore sorting quiz -- previously I had only taken the Patronus and Wand quizzes.

My Patronus ended up being a Brown Hare, not too much I can really say about that.

My wand was a bit more interesting, "Ebony wood with a Phoenix feather core 14 ½" and Unbending flexibility". It's pretty spot on, as Ebony is for people who hold real strong to their beliefs (yep) and aren't afraid to be non-conforming because of it (yep). Phoenix cores are rare and difficult to tame, which I don't think is particularly surprising either, makes sense that I would get something tricky and complex. The wand is pretty long and skinny, but so am I, haha. And do I even need to comment on "unbending flexibility"? Of course...

I ended up sorting into Hufflepuff, yay! I always knew it'd be Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff, but didn't know which one. I don't think I could stand either of Gryffindor OR Slytherin, so as long as I'm out of those two I think I'd do just fine. Ravenclaw was my initial thought since I'd be with a bunch of nerdy bookworms, but in hindsight, Hufflepuff is probably the house for me. I'm no Hermione, that's for sure, and I think I'm set apart from Ravenclaw a bit by my focus on the practical and pragmatic...I think I would get into trouble if I'm around too many intellectuals who strive for knowledge and debate just for the sake of itself (speaking from experience...). And I would prioritize my consistency over my intelligence in a heartbeat -- I've always been more Green than Blue, after all (in regards to Magic: the Gathering). I think Ravenclaw would be more willing and ready to change themselves in order to do things more efficiently or just adapt to changing circumstances whereas Hufflepuff is more content with things just comfortably staying the same. I think that also speaks to my Introverted Thinking being tertiary rather than primary or secondary; I definitely have an interest in understanding the logic and systems of how things work but I'm more than willing to sacrifice that when it comes into conflict with the tried and true.

Game Stuff

Hollow Knight - My completion percentage is climbing quite more quickly than I anticipated -- I'm already at 97%! I feel like that's a bit of a misleading number though, as there's definitely a lot more than 3 more things I have left to do. I've just gotten the other half of the Kingsoul from the White Palace and am now ready to go through that door and get the Void Heart. I've still got some charms to go find in random places as well, and I still have a ton of geo to collect in order to get more of the unbreakable charms, etc etc etc. But it's still been fun so far!

Dark Souls - Not too much to report, but we've cleared out most of the rest of Sen's Fortress (minus the annoying Titanite Demons in the tar pit, but I'm thinking maybe to do those after another trip to the Undead Asylum to grab the Rusted Iron Ring). We've started going through the very first part of Anor Londo with the huge knights, which were quite intimidating at first but are a lot easier once you figure out how to best tackle them (just tightly circle around them and stay near their butts). At some point it might be a good idea to try and farm some more sunlight medals to get access to Great Lightning Spear, though that does require 30 Faith so I've got some time before that'll even be possible to cast (we're at 25 faith right now, guess I should start investing more into faith -- the last point was into dex). We're still swinging around the Iaito +10, which has been serving well, though we'll see if we open up any other useful weapon choices once we meet the giant blacksmith.

Xmas Stuff

Surprise! I thought I was done with xmas letters but I actually got another mailing address, so I just finished my =32nd= (and final?) xmas letter. I still need to figure out a few more gifts but I've actually already handled a lot of them which is nice. Shopping online via Amazon is definitely making things easier this year...

Coding Stuff

In addition to having LoopMuse updated and running again, I've also gone and rescued/updated RelentlessWaves! Huzzah!

Cooking Stuff

I did it! I made prime rib! (not actually "prime grade", but let's just say a rib roast is considered "prime rib")

I got way too much meat from the butcher (I seem to have a issue panicking in these sorts of situations!), so I split it into two and cooked it twice. This is definitely the most money I've ever spent on meat before...made sure to enlist help making it go to good use...

Made sure to apply liberal salt and pepper and stick them uncovered in the refrigerator beforehand. I kept on thinking I had been too heavy-handed with the salt, but that didn't end up being an issue at all. I guess you really do want to season it super well when it's a piece of meat this big.

Here's how the first slab turned out. I used a reverse sear, meaning low and steady oven heat to cook the roast all the way through to medium-rare, followed by a short blast in a blazing hot roasting oven to brown the exterior.

The slices looked (and tasted) great, and they're mostly medium-rare throughout. I had it with a bit of simple store-bought horseradish cream which I enjoyed.

The second slab (which I don't have photos of) was sort of more interesting as it had been in the fridge for around 4 days before I roasted it. I decided to trim off a bit of the exterior since I reasoned it had probably gotten TOO dried out (or possibly even gone bad) during its fridge time. I'd like to think that was the right call given that 4 days is beginning to creep up into "I'm dry-aging this meat" territory, but I can't really say for sure. It turned out just fine either way, though I got a bit impatient and used 180-degrees instead of 170-degrees for the low roast, so it was probably a bit less evenly cooked. It ended up being a mistake as the roast was ready way before the correct eating time so I had to reheat it. Not the end of the world certainly, but the first one probably ended up being better.

I'd say it was a success all around. Having a better cut of meat would probably increase the flavor, but there's only so much I'm willing to splurge on something like this (I guess it is once a year...). Maybe getting a higher grade / more marbled piece, but way smaller? I also know to not worry about oversalting next time, too. Once other thing is that I think I can shorten the high heat browning step a little bit. I think the exterior crust ended up being browned well enough and there's a tiny bit of grey banding near the edges of the roast. I'd rather sacrifice some of the browning to get rid of some of that grey, I think.

Anyways, hooray! Now to stay light on red meat for a while...speaking of which, it's been forever and a day since I've just cooked a plain ribeye steak, so that may probably be the next real red meat item to try? I haven't actually done the whole sous-vide followed by blowtorching in a hot cast iron pan thing yet, so I could definitely try that. ....maybe after the holiday season is over, lol.

Oh, cornbread happened too:

It was pretty....fine. Not super delicious by itself, but I mean, cornbread isn't naturally super delicious? It was a bit overcooked because I had totally forgotten I was using the convection setting on my oven, so whoops! Could have probably been more moist if I had not made that mistake. The bottom side definitely got burnt:

But the middle was pretty alright, so phew.

Oh, also, pumpkin pie happened:

Lol turns out I don't have a photo of the ACTUAL pie so you just get a photo of the "leftover filling" pie, which was much scrappier. It still tasted fine though! There wasn't really too much to mess up here, just blend all the filling ingredients together and bake it...simple and effective, and it definitely tasted like....good pumpkin pie. Would I make it on a regular basis? Probably not. The apple crumble thinger that I make is probably a bit more exciting. But if I am making a pie, this might be the one!

Ludum Dare 43

Starts tomorrow! Wish us the best of luck! =D I've updated to Unity 2018, which hopefully should not cause any issues. (also updated to the latest of LeanTween and SInput) Unity 2018 has its own pixel perfect camera implementation (currently a preview package), which I might play around with once I get back to Rhythm Quest development as a replacement for the other pixel perfect camera scripts I use. I don't see anything in the changelogs about fixing seamless audio in WebGL though =( Bleh.

Life

In general is going pretty well, with the notable hiccup/bump here and there that I'd rather not get into. But yes, in general I'm doing well! Keeping busy with a bunch of good things, while not getting =too= stressed out. Every so often I will have days of existential crises about the past, but that's something I feel is part of my very being, so I don't really think that's something I would even try to reconcile...

Anyways, I would say 4 out of 5 mostly* (?) right now, which honestly is what I'm happy with. I'm not one to need a 5 out of 5 all the time...

Who Replaces Bryan Colangelo?

It’s over.

Lord have mercy. I’m just glad we’re moving this thing forward.

If you listened to yesterday’s press conference with Brett Brown and Josh Harris, you heard them say that there will be no hard deadline on the hiring of a new general manager. One month? Six weeks? Who knows.

In my mind, I think you give yourself 4-5 weeks to get this done, which would allow Brown to run the draft process, then cede free agency and contract negotiations to the new player-personnel executive, who comes in during the first week of July. I don’t know if there’s enough time to conduct a proper search and make a choice by July 1st, but this is priority number one. You gotta get it started and finished right now, and you bet your arse people are lining up to take a job where you would be overseeing two superstar players with a good chunk of assets and plenty of cap room.

The Sixers’ GM role is very attractive.

Here’s a list of names that come to mind:

David Griffin

Griffin is the former Cleveland GM, the trendy pick because of his relationship with LeBron James. The thought is that you bring him in, he brings LeBron in, and the winning commences.

And before I go any further, I think you have to define what you’re looking for in a GM. Do you want a guy who can lure superstar free agents, someone with connections? Or do you think LeBron and Paul George are making their decisions based solely on the players and the coach? I think it’s the latter, though the former does help. If I’m a free agent looking for a new team, I’m thinking, “hmm.. yes… I would like to earn $25 million playing alongside Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons.”

Or – do you look for an assistant GM who is worthy of promotion and keep building for the long term? Do you carry this thing forward with a long view or go for broke right now? It’s something to think about.

Anyway, back to Griffin, who spent just three years in Cleveland, coming to Ohio in 2014 after many years in Phoenix, serving as “senior vice president of basketball operations” before taking the Cavs’ gig. They won a title during his time at the helm, though the list of moves he made does have some question marks.

For starters, he fired Mike Brown and brought in David Blatt, who didn’t work out in Cleveland despite starting 30-11 in his second season. Blatt eventually gave way to Tyronn Lue. Griffin drafted Andrew Wiggins, then executed the trade that sent Wiggins to Minnesota and Kevin Love to Cleveland. Philly was a third party in the deal. He later kickstarted a struggling team when he shipped out Dion Waiters, Alex Kirk, Lou Amundson, and a 2nd round pick for Iman Shumpert, JR Smith, and a protected first rounder. He sent that pick and another first rounder to Denver for Timofey Mozgov. Smith and Tristan Thompson later got long term deals.

If you bring Griffin in, and assuming LeBron comes with him, that’s what you’re getting – a “win now” type of mentality with some risk. The timeline shrinks. You’re looking at more dodgy moves to try to get that title sooner rather than later, while possibly jeopardizing long term stability.

So if that’s your thing, a ring at any cost, the Griffin/LeBron strategy is your kind of move.

Sam Hinkie

Here’s the thing with Hinkie – if you want him to come back, is it because you truly feel like he’s the right guy for the job? Or does sentimentality influence the thought process? Does Hinkie’s cult-hero status bring along feelings of nostalgia?

I asked that question on Twitter and here’s a sampling of the response:

I do because I think his whole process was leading to this summer. I don’t think he would have taken fultz. It was about getting the pieces in play and signing 1 or 2 free agents. This was the off-season he did the tank for

If anything, the question might be does he deserve to see it through? For process believers, the answer is yes. There’s no evidence to suggest he will or will not be a good GM for a team developing current talent.

I think Hinkie is a victim of his success—there are no more Vlade Divac types to fleece, and the Hinkie special contracts alienated agents. And the completion phase of the process requires different skills from the asset-accumulation phase.

Did Hinkie deserve a chance to see this through? I don’t know. I wasn’t on the beat back then, but the Sixers were compiling talent and turning the corner slowly. I think that was apparent. The knock was always this idea that Hinkie was excellent at tearing it down, acquiring assets, and starting the rebuild, but did he have the skills to negotiate with agents and lure star players to town? Was he enough of a “basketball” guy or was he a corny “data” guy?

I don’t know. I have no clue. I don’t think anybody really knows.

But you can’t just say, “yay Hinkie! let’s complete the process!” You have to remove emotion from it. You have to axe the sentimentality. If the players trust Hinkie and have a good relationship, fine, but so what? Is that going to make Embiid cut down on his turnovers? Probably not.

The gig is different than the one Hinkie left two years ago. We don’t have any proof that he can finish the job, but there’s also nothing suggesting he can’t get it done. Personally, I just feel like the ship has sailed. The Hinkie story is written in stone, and I could see the NBA getting salty and combative again if the Sixers wanted to down that road. I think you’ve just gotta turn the page on Sam and let it be. Bringing him back would just reignite the BS conflict between pro-Process and anti-Process fans, and we’re trying to move this thing forward, not relive all of that.

Marc Eversley

Promote from within?

Eversley is the Sixers’ Vice President of Player Personnel dating back two years now. He held a similar role under Colangelo in Toronto and eventually left that post to take a “Vice President of Scouting” gig with the Wizards.

He held that job from 2013 to 2016 under longtime President Ernie Grunfeld and VP Tommy Sheppard. During that span, Washington drafted Otto Porter and Jerian Grant and Kelly Oubre and hired Scott Brooks as head coach. They assembled a pretty good core that has probably underachieved over the years.

It’s hard to say how much of a role Eversley played in all of that, or with Raptors’ moves from 2006 to 2013. But there’s no lack of experience there. Eversley has been around the league for 12+ seasons now and held significant jobs along the way. I don’t know if people view him as a guy who comes from the “Colangelo tree” per se, since he spent a lot of time with him in Toronto and came to Philly to work with him. I don’t know if there’s a stigma attached, or if people think he learned from Colangelo and would be the same type of executive. I don’t think that’s the case, and I think fans and media would probably create some separation there, but it certainly doesn’t help his case. The Colangelo connection feels like an unfortunate sidebar. I’d hope people wouldn’t lump him in there and just treat him as his own person.

As for the other Sixers’ player-personnel executives, I think Ned Cohen might get an interview, but he doesn’t have as much team-specific experience as Eversley. He was the NBA’s Associate VP of Basketball Operations before coming to Philly, so his resume is more league-oriented, obviously. Alex Rucker, the VP of Analytics and Strategy, would probably be third in line behind Eversley and Cohen. I think some companies do the formal thing where you interview your own people with no intent to promote them, but you go through the process anyway and everybody gets the experience of doing a run through for future interviews.

Gersson Rosas

Rosas is working alongside Daryl Morey as the Rockets’ Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations

He had a brief, three month stint in Dallas with Donnie Nelson but came back to Houston after disputes over his role with the team. Rosas also has GM experience running the Rocket’s G-League affiliate.

From his linkedin page:

“In addition to his duties with the Rockets, Rosas previously served as the General Manager of the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, which is Houston’s single-affiliation NBA Development League partner. In his four full seasons as Rio Grande Valley’s GM, the Vipers won NBA D-League Championships in the 2009-10 and 2012-13 seasons, while reaching three D-League Finals in four years.”

Morey is well-respected around the league, so it’s only natural that one of the guys who works closely with him would be a popular name. Rosas was a candidate for the Hornets gig that went to Mitch Kupchak. He also apparently removed himself from consideration for the Pistons’ GM job.

Rosas could have taken a better gig at this point in his career, so it seems like he’s calculated in making the right decision moving forward. The Sixers’ job is attractive, much more than Detroit or Charlotte, yes? When you look at how Morey has assembled that Houston team, and the fact that a Chris Paul injury probably made the difference in a title vs. a game 7 conference finals loss, you’d have to say that there’s a pedigree and a “winning culture” that Rosas is attached to.

Mike Zarren

Danny Ainge fan? How about approaching his assistant general manager?

This would be a very Rosas-esque hiring, bringing in the #2 from a winning club.

Zarren is another “unpaid intern to executive” story. He’s a Boston guy and a former season ticket holder and blah blah blah. So the question is whether dude even has any desire to leave in the first place, or just assume the top dog role when Ainge moves on. When does that happen? How long would Zarren be okay with being second-in-command? What if that goes on and on and on?

He was there when Ainge pulled off the blockbuster move with the Nets in 2013. He was there when Ainge got an extra first rounder out of the Sixers and still wound up with Jayson Tatum. He knows how to build a strong roster and keep things moving forward.

For what it’s worth Zarren reportedly had the Sixers’ gig offered to him back in 2013, but declined:

“I don’t know all the details, but I know there was strong interest in Mike from Philly,” president of basketball operations Danny Ainge told the Boston Herald at the NBA Draft Combine in Chicago. “I don’t know why (he turned it down). You’ll have to ask him.”

Zarren is an advanced statistics guy with some Hinkie similarities. But he’s also been around the block and probably wouldn’t have any issue with agent relations or contract negotiations or the human side of things.

If he turned down the gig back then, I don’t know if he’d want it now, unless you’re sold on the core of Embiid/Simmons and ready to move out of Ainge’s shadow and into your own spotlight.

Brian Wright

Wright is the Spurs’ assistant GM and has been in the role since 2016.

He didn’t cross paths with Brown there, but the common thought is that anyone related to the Spurs and R.C. Buford is a worthy hire. Wright is in his mid-thirties, a relatively young guy who doesn’t have a ton of experience, so his candidacy would be a long-shot I’d think.

Danny Ferry

I know, I know, the incident with the racist language from a few years back. That might be a total non-starter in and of itself, then you consider that the Sixers are coming off a scandal of their own. It would be terrible optics. (FYI Ferry was eventually cleared).

But there’s a track record of success and a Brett Brown connection dating back to the San Antonio days. There’s this from 2016:

There were flirtations with Ferry in the past. I don’t know if the incident from a few years back disqualifies him from the start, but it’s probably a risky road to go down.

Joe Dumars

I’m only listing him here for the sake of conversation. I don’t see him popping up on a lot of other lists. Stephen A. brought up his name this morning on First Take, and after initially laughing, I sort of came back around and said “hmm…”

Here’s the thing, Dumars built the 2004 title-winning Pistons squad, a team that went to the Eastern Conference finals six straight years. They won 73 playoff games during his tenure. I think his name popped up as a candidate for the Hawks’ GM job a year ago, but otherwise you don’t hear a lot about him these days.

He did have a lot of clunkers, too. Darko Milicic? Rodney White? Trading Chauncey Billups? Huge deals for Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva? He also went through coaches in rapid fire fashion.

Not inspiring, but listen, those Pistons teams of the aughts were pretty damn good. It’s something to think about if you’re okay with a “retread” type of hire.

okay so question: People hate 2-3 so much and one of the reasons is Moe's testimony but there are SO MANY THINGS IN THIS 3RD GAME LIKE THAT

4 tries like HELL to do what 3 did, I think, but it gets tripped up a lot along the way.

(and yes 3 is hard. I'd say the only thing it does that's more forgiving that 2 is that IIRC, it doesn't penalize you for screwing up Magatama sessions.)
