Text
As someone who has been in the alternative subculture for most of my life, I genuinely cannot stand goth elitism. Is it important to recognize that goth and punk started as radical ways of expressing new age ideology through music and fashion? Absolutely. However, most people these days share the same mindset that helped create that genre of people. You don’t have to be trad goth for people to realize at a glance what you stand for. You don’t have to strictly listen to these decades old bands that you don’t like or wear only black all the time. For fucks sake, more than half of all those old goth bands turned out to be full of AWFUL people. Abusers, pedophiles, racists, and homophobes practicing the opposite of the they sang about. Fast fashion is the devil, but it’s the only thing most people have access to! DIY shit as you can, but understand that your current fiscal security comes first and foremost. Being alternative can be soft as fuck. Listen to indie bedroom pop or listen to Norwegian black metal. Wear all pink or all black. It literally doesn’t matter. Just be fucking kind to people and take care of yourself. Be accepting where it is applicable and protect those who need it without yelling over voices that need to be heard. And, as always, understand that these subcultures were not, will not, and never have been strictly white. Everyone deserves a space in this community regardless of race, sexual orientation, gender identity, or religion.

Alternative Reading: SE Hinton
Looking for some classic reading about alt characters? Look no further than SE Hinton’s novels. While Greasers are not exactly punk, they ARE a part of historic American counter-culture and a piece of the early alternative scene, and one featured in some of SE Hinton’s most prominent and classic novels.
The Outsiders
Tumblr media
“‘The Outsiders‘ is a youth novel by S. E. Hinton published in 1967. Ponyboy Curtis and his gang of greasers regularly fight with another gang, the upper-class Socs. Ponyboy learns valuable lessons about family, unity, friendship, and goodness and is affiliated with a group when a Greaser kills a Soc.”
The Outsiders is SE Hinton’s most popular book and has a movie made after it.
Rumblefish
Tumblr media
“Fourteen-year-old Rusty-James reigns as the toughest kid in his rough, depressed neighborhood. He worships his older brother, who was the leader of a gang. But his brother drifts aimlessly, and Rusty-James lives only for the excitement of fighting.”
Rumble Fish also has a movie made after it.
That Was Then, This Is Now
Tumblr media
“That Was Then, This Is Now is a coming-of age, young adult novel by S. E. Hinton, first published in 1971. Set in the 1960s, it follows the relationship between two brothers, Mark Jennings and Bryon Douglas, who are foster brothers, but find their relationship rapidly changing and deteriorating.”
That Was Then, This Is Now also has a movie made after it.
SE Hinton has many other books. You can find a full list of them as well as more information about her here.

New Wave
Welcome to the vibrant world of New Wave music, a genre that transcended the boundaries of sound and style in the 1980s. Join us as we explore the music, fashion, and cultural movements that defined this era, and discover how its influence continues to sh
In the early 1980s, a musical and cultural phenomenon emerged that would forever shape the landscape of popular music. This phenomenon was known as New Wave, and it brought with it a fresh and innovative approach to music, fashion, and art. New Wave was not just a genre; it was a state of mind, a rebellion against the established norms of the 1970s and a celebration of individuality and…

Today is the birthday of Maria Bamford. While she is also a creative and prolific voice actress and has over the past decade expanded her credits to live television acting, Bamford is best known as one of the most creative stand up comedians and all-around comedic auteurs active. A deeply strange and original talent, Bamford was probably never meant to be the average citizen’s cup of tea, but the curious souls who weather the initial weirdness of her approach soon tend to discover that she is one of the great virtuosos of the form. Bamford is capable of effortlessly contorting her voice into multiple memorable characters who never appear as mere gimmicky impressions, but truly detailed and lived-in persons who are drawn not only hilariously, but with penetrating insight and surreal compassion. While she has gained more recognition over the past decade with a fairly polished TV show and structurally inventive specials, I prefer her mid-period work where she was experiencing a highly fertile creative peak which is all the more inspiring for how much she did with such limited resources. A highlight from this period might be the underseen dvd PLAN B (2010) which is less a stand up special than it is the funniest one-woman play I can imagine existing. The no-budget web series The Maria Bamford Show (2007)—available on Youtube; a nearly forgotten body of work some of her fans aren’t even aware of—is wildly inventive and truly astonishing; it’s funnier and more creative than anything I have ever seen on actual television or Netflix by far. In addition to being an absolute master of her craft, Bamford is known for raising mental health awareness, her avid love of pugs (RIP Blossom), and being an exceptionally sensitive person.
