I’m a senior in college... and I’m having an identity crisis.
I know what you’re thinking. College seniors don’t have identity crises. We’re about to graduate. We’re supposed to have our lives together by knowing exactly what we want to do in the next five years with a career, significant other, and names of the next three currently non-existent children lined up in a crisply wrapped box with a shiny red bow. And yet, here I am, about to enter my senior year without a single clue what I want to do afterwards because what I thought I wanted turned out to be shattered cookie crumbs at the bottom of the Chips Ahoy box I'd hoped to consume as my daily nutritious breakfast. Hey, I’m a stressed college student and Chips Ahoy is delicious.
Anyway, I’m getting sidetracked.
When I applied to colleges during my senior year of high school, there was only one thing I wanted in my four year university: a good dance program. I started taking ballet lessons when I was five years old and continued to try different styles throughout elementary and middle school. Some years I did lyrical, or tap. Others I went back to the basics of ballet. But I never stopped or took a year off. I never even switched dance studios. I loved it way too much to ever put it behind me, and I still love it with the same amount of passion, if not more.
However, things got a little more complicated in high school. Ever since I was eight years old, I’d struggled with my body image. Around that time, my pediatrician informed my parents that I was “overweight” and needed to go on a strict diet. My mom, who trusted doctors, as people should be able to do, just wanted the best for me and therefore became obsessed with the food pyramid which was still widely accepted as healthy and legitimate. Her efforts kind of backfired though. I remember the strict restrictions she put on my food intake only made me want sugar and potato chips and candy more than ever. One time I snuck downstairs to our kitchen and snatched a bag of Lays from the top of the refrigerator where she thought I couldn’t reach them. My plan was to run upstairs and consume the whole bag, but unfortunately I was caught. Instead of taking them away from me, my mom decided to play the guilt card.
“What would Dr. (insert name here) say?” she said as she stood over me with her hands on her hips. Now, my mom is a short woman who has always had a difficult time saying no, especially to her kids. Luckily for her, I’ve always been a people pleaser so it didn’t matter much. Not this time though. I ignored her, ran upstairs, and ate the whole bag while watching Disney Channel on my parents’ TV. I was the poster child for couch potato, or at least that’s how I felt.
That memory ingrained itself in my brain for years.
If only I’d just lost weight then like I was supposed to, I wouldn’t be so fat and ugly now.
I lived in constant guilt and shame until I was 15 and decided to do something about it, thus marking the beginning of my six year battle with various eating disorders, anxiety disorders, and depression. It was also around that time I decided I wanted to be a professional dancer and joined my studio’s competitive team.
I could go into all the details about how difficult that time was, but I think you get the point and that’s not really what this story is about, even though it is a very important component. I will say that there is something incredibly disheartening and heartbreaking about the one thing in the entire world you want seemingly requiring a very specific body type and not being able to achieve it even through extreme, life threatening measures. Additionally, being constantly evaluated and having your body scrutinously examined in class everyday can very easily break you. It broke me.
I asked for help before coming to college, but I didn’t really start to get better until the end of my sophomore year, and I still struggle a lot today to the point where I often skip class simply because I can’t handle being seen in public. It’s a lot better though, and my mental and physical health have both improved immensely. Which I guess brings me to the present day and my ongoing identity crisis.
Part of me wonders if I only loved dance because my eating disorder made me addicted to exercise and I couldn’t imagine a career where I didn’t push my body way past its limits everyday. Another part of me knows that those thoughts are just my eating disorder (I call him? Her? It? Ed) trying to take away something that matters dearly to me. Ed is a jerk like that.
What I do know is that I am in love with dancing, but going to class everyday and facing my reflection in the mirror while being constantly judged by teachers and peers is one of the hardest and emotionally draining things I’ve ever done. I do it because I refuse to give in, or give up. I want to show the world, and myself, that any body is capable of being a talented dancer.
But I do wonder what the point is if I have way more difficult classes than joyful ones. It’s cliche to say, but life is way too goddamn short, and I’m not sure if I want to spend it doing something that doesn’t make me irrevocably happy, at least most of the time.
I actually had a counseling session with my therapist yesterday where I brought all this stuff up. I was a little reluctant to do so because saying it outloud made the doubts and possibility of change real, and I’m not a huge fan of change or decision making. Thank you, anxiety. It actually ended up being a really good conversation though. She said something that really resonated with me and that was that I didn’t have to quit dancing if I decided not to major in it. She told me that it seemed as if it wasn’t the dancing itself that was triggering to me, but the fact that grades and constant evaluation were taking the joy out of it. I thought about it for a while, and realized she was probably right. I’d stop saying “I get to go to dance class” and started saying “I have to go to dance class or I’ll get an F.” I started thinking “I have to be good at this so I can pay off my student loans” instead of “I hope I get to do big performances someday because it sounds really fun.”
For a long time I defined myself as a Dance and Creative Writing double major, and I was proud of that identity, but I think I’m coming to the realization that maybe I can still be a dancer without studying it in school and that’s okay. During the school year, I’m a Resident Adviser, and I tell my residents and friends all the time that almost everyone changes their major at some point at least once. I never thought that person would be me considering I had my whole life planned out before even arriving at college, but maybe I should start taking my own advice and accept that things change and people change and that’s okay.
I don’t plan on ever quitting dance, even when I’m 80 years old and can barely walk. In fact, I actually looked into different dance companies, studios, and programs in the area so that I could still take classes even if I stopped taking them with my university. The prospect actually made me really excited because the studios I looked into offered a variety of styles from hip-hop and tap, to salsa, swing, ballet, and contemporary. Something I’ve never liked about my university’s Dance Program is their lack of variety that branches off from contemporary and ballet, and I think I would actually be a lot happier taking classes in a plethora of styles.
A couple weeks ago, a friend confessed to me their struggle with bulimia because they knew I’d had an eating disorder and wanted a bit of advice for how to tell their parents. I’ve always enjoyed supporting other people and learning about their diverse experiences, especially when they connect with my own because I can help them feel less alone. It’s probably the main reason I love to read. I’ve also always defined myself as a good friend. I try to keep my phone volume on at night so my friends know they can reach me at any hour (despite the fact that it makes my roommates hate me a tiny bit) because I know that sometimes our darkest moments happen in the middle of the night when we are alone.
Helping my friend through the terrifying decision to ask her parents for help was incredibly fulfilling for me. I’d been going through a bit of a relapse with my eating disorder and talking to her reminded me of all the self-care tools I’d learned throughout my years. It sounds awful, but it also gave both of us a good laugh to be reminded that some of the things we think, while totally valid, are also sort of ridiculous. In addition to being a jerk, Ed is also ridiculous.
It got me thinking about what kinds of things make me happy.  Reading makes me happy because it allows me to connect with others and learn about experiences different from my own. Writing makes me happy because I feel as if I can share my values and experiences in hopes that they support other people and let them know they aren’t alone. Dancing makes me happy because it grounds me to myself while expressing myself artistically and telling stories with music and movement. I enjoy spending time with nature and taking pictures to appreciate the little things in the world around us. I’m also very passionate about my work as a Resident Adviser because I know I make a difference in the lives of my residents.
Basically the biggest defining factor, the core memory at the center of my islands as they’d say on Inside Out, my absolute favorite movie of all time, is a fascination with the amazing miracle that is humanity, and how we can use stories to spread kindness and awareness into the world.
I’d always had a slight inclination toward psychology. I took a 101 class in high school and another in college. I really enjoyed both and wanted to take more classes in the subject, but wasn’t particularly motivated to go to grad school, which is unfortunately almost necessary if you want to do anything with psychology.
But now I’m starting to wonder if I’d missed my calling.
What if I’m a college senior and I missed my calling?
Ah, there’s the anxiety. We were getting a little too serious and insightful up in here.
But yeah so here I am so close to the finish line wondering if I need to start over. I still want to continue my studies in Creative Writing because it is something I am deeply passionate about. I also want to continue dancing, even if it’s not in a college program. I have this slight dream of maybe opening a body positive studio someday and encouraging dance as a practice for anyone, not just really thin ballerinas. So that’s definitely a possibility for my future. I already have enough credits to change my major to a minor without any repercussions so I’m looking into maybe doing that. I’m also looking into potentially adding a psychology minor to my academic studies.
Somewhat unrelated, but it’s important, I promise. I’m a huge fan of the vlogbrothers, a YouTube channel with John Green (the author) and Hank Green (the science geek and soon to be author). My favorite thing about their channel and their lives is that they do things that make them happy for a living. Hank is a science major of some kind or another but now he’s writing young adult fiction and singing songs about Harry Potter both on stage and on the internet. John  started his education and career as a minister in hospitals, and now he writes books about teenagers and makes videos on YouTube about his garden (among many other hilarious and educational topics). I’ve always admired their ability to tackle new projects and pursue things that matter to them while also raising families of their own.
Basically what I’m getting at is, maybe I don’t know exactly where my life is headed but I think this change might be for the better in regards to my personal growth, mental health, and engagement in well-rounded studies that I’m passionate about. Maybe I’ll go to grad school. Maybe I won’t. Maybe I’ll make it big on So You Think You Can Dance. Maybe I won’t. Maybe I’ll become a bestselling author, or counselor, or mom. Maybe I’ll become all of those things or something entirely different. For now I’m content pursuing my options and trying to participate in the activities and studies that make me happy. (In addition to working with Academic Advising and Career Services so I don’t end up broke, homeless, and alone).
So yeah, I guess there’s me, or at least what I understand to be me.
For now.

Coronavirus acts like a 'Excavator' in the music business|Techno Setting

Coronavirus acts like a 'Excavator' in the popular music industry
A number of full weeks ago my journeying for job between Leipzig and also Berlin ceased as a result of this coronavirus outbreak. I have actually given that then understood I have actually been actually totally eaten through work the final although and haven't been taking note of worldly affairs. I totally overlooked acting on the information coverage on covid19. Like the rest of us, I have never ever seen this kind of scenario where a global virus burst out so quickly around the globe.
Purportedly the constantly harmful and also aged that are actually thought about the absolute most at risk in our society currently over time are actually the absolute most in jeopardy, however there have been actually bunches of newspaper article from all over the world about folks under the age of fifty that are actually being actually laid up in Intensive Treatment.
Along with what believes that a comprehensive lockdown in result throughout the globe, to sway this infection which our company at this minute don't understand just how much it will definitely take our company in Corona's cooling rollercoaster. A considerable amount of individuals from throughout the world are really straining, the music business is actually enduring financially now over time, from group managers, PR organizations as well as the DJs. While all of us are being actually informed that social distancing is actually a must, purportedly any type of social get in touch with may create the matters worse.
Must our team comply with the policies of each of our federal governments and remain at our homes or should we say fuck the globe and be defiant and also keep going crazy whatever?
To become truthful, I am actually still quite a lot in shock about just how the world has totally shutdown but also for fundamental essential needs. Every little thing appears inverted, it is actually a little creepy, it seems that one thing thus little such as a microorganism can essentially handle traveling, globe markets, as well as authorities, an infection that's still in its own infancy participating in mayhem outside and in. Last night I went purchasing for groceries and also any of the grocery stores I went to all had operated out of fresh fruit and vegetables, dairy, eggs, bread, spaghetti all the everyday based was actually fully gone.
Let's continue track and also discuss the songs industry, where nightclubs like the epic Berghain and Berlin's finest Tresor among various other clubs almost everywhere are defending their presence. DJs are immediately certainly not being actually scheduled or every one of their approaching jobs for the following pair of months being terminated and God knows for how much time. The cycle of the songs field is actually being damaged presently. This is actually why I had an interest in exactly how DJs coming from various spots around the entire world & & exactly how it's impacted them as well as just how they are actually coping with it today.
We asked numerous individuals coming from the songs industry; How possesses the 'LOCKDOWN' condition impacted you individually as well as how are your household taking care of the disruption as well as perhaps very most importantly, just how is it impacting you fiscally?
DAVE CLARKE
"The important things concerning this lockdown is actually just how you discover exactly how it is actually affecting each and every individual, the anxiety, the worry of does a sneezing indicate merely a cold or "The Infection"? It is more vital than ever to connect and also mention hi digitally to every person you care approximately, to pay attention, to learn (I was actually talking with a friend in China to attempt and learn ideas for instance) to sustain, to acquire help, to try as well as be actually amusing and have submissiveness. Easy things like losing the drone of the urban area seems for me has actually been actually quite disturbing, you really feel alone, the managing your food items source like a stockroom for efficiency (which tbh need to possess consistently held true, yet an unacceptable apple believes that a crime currently) understanding individuals may certainly not pay for food items, the stress they possess.
The loss of all the liberties we considered given, in retrospection the pointless stupidity of business community. Walking the roads to acquire food experiences like Sundays made use of to be actually, every little thing now is actually full-on sell sell, probably closing the outlets down for a time a week will definitely help the mind, the loved ones, the private inhale far better. Oh, and the social networking sites birthed DJ's, possibly a lot better for me not to claim just about anything regarding that shitshow of arrogance. Allow's survive this find out, grieve, be actually better individuals, oh and really love even more honestly."
SANTONIO ECHOLS
"For me, It is actually beginning to get actual for our team in Michigan. My partner as well as I chose to stockpile on some things 3 weeks ago for the residence (food-wise) merely in the event that. I personally assume it is going to get a lot worse just before it gets better. After chatting with my booking organization My jobs were actually terminated or on grip for the month of May. Monetarily it is actually not affecting our team my better half is actually working from house and we possess a couple of dollars do away with for a stormy time. Companies are actually hurting a little, I'm hoping that this will definitely be actually short phrase. Effective my moms and dads and my spouse's parents to remain within was the tough part. Finding exactly how it is actually influencing seniors differently ... Let's keep prayerful!"
ORLANDO VOORN
"Most of us recognize that Coronavirus is actually a major concern for any individual around immediately, but as for feeling the economic grief on my edge and likely for a lot of underground songs producers, this performs not modify a lot given that our company have been paralyzed through this new system of greed as well as no drug age. Many of us discovered currently other means to keep afloat. I make popular music for over three decades and also ain't going no place.
I wish all my actual popular music manufacturers and also lovers to keep tough and strive and smart to maintain doing you for US. Nevertheless, the "elite" Non-producer DJ along with a million fans are currently weakened through this virus and can not go fist-pumping or even whatever else unawareness they may consider to supply the audience. Can not create that 50k a program anymore, I would certainly must claim along with satisfaction in my vocal. Fate involved you incognito as well as her name is Circle. Feel free to do not be sobbing online over how poor you possess it and also begging for donations given that you can not hand push any sort of longer. Because of the brand-new corrupt unit of Fans the whole scene how it got created has actually obtained raped from its own source by the greed of the corporates alleged advocates of the Techno as well as residence scene but definitely are out commercial just. Do not care about the top quality of the popular music. Those events that do treatment are actually rare. Below ground for life little one our experts such as roaches, certainly never dying always living As well as along with that being pointed out Let's return to the course!"
STATIC OBSTRUCTION
"This coronavirus pandemic carries 2 major risks to individual suffering, a wellness danger which is without a doubt the best essential but stone's throw behind is the financial risk. This 2nd one can easily trigger human suffering on a much bigger scale, unemployment, bankruptcy, making fear. Its own a cause and effect and a symptom of the capitalist device that is actually dated and also extreme. Our financial system might be established up in a manner elevating everyone from hardship, certainly not only the abundant, but also for the absolute most part, it loads scientific research as well as advancement. In my viewpoint, our federal governments need to have to carry out a global simple earnings for all, so people do not suffer needlessly, our company do not need additional mayhem bordering this problems, we require actual management and a planning of action to reduce the quantity of interruption presently happening.
All artists/DJs/graphic designers/promoters are influenced through this current state of affairs. Over the final 10 years, our team have actually viewed the amount of amount of money our company bring in coming from generating music decrease due to the onset of streaming web sites. In 2015 was awful in mind available because I started releasing popular music in 2005 and also but my songs was actually streamed over 500,000 opportunities on a variety of different internet sites. Along with most countries entering into lockdown, I am now not needed to create leaflets or banners as all events have been called off. I'm additionally certainly not able to DJ anywhere, each of this will possess a knock-on impact of eating into our financial savings. Currently, I don't understand anyone with the virus, each of my friends and family are actually taking safety measures along with social distancing, but it's having an extensive impact on every person. Coming from my viewpoint, It presents exactly how delicate our society is actually and also partly how unproductive a considerable amount of our work are actually."
DJ SURGELES
"The 'Lock-Down' has actually delivered our company considerably. I find it in the people around me, that are currently pretty panicky and also question where this will definitely lead. My efficiencies have actually been called off up until the end of April. The only positive factor I observe right now is that individuals are actually cooperating more to try to quell the huge complication and also for example in Wuhan there is again sunlight and crystal clear skies which has certainly not taken place for many years because of the smogginess, Venice has actually also taken a positive turn, the water is very clear once again while it was polluted. Perhaps it is actually Mama Attribute that offers a warning to humanity. From an economic standpoint, I will, obviously, step, yet that doesn't matter, our company need to make an effort to obtain the Infection in control!"
ADAM HELDER
"A lot of our clients are expert DJs, as well as occasions are suspended around the planet currently. Most of all of them are facing a come by their profit and it is actually mirroring also on our job. On yet another palm it is actually a good moment for that desires to advertise a brand-new launch, there's a ton of musicians spending more opportunity on podcasts and also stay streaming DJ collections, so they're seeking brand new songs, and at Grasp Coupon we'll release soon a charity initiative entailing our most prominent services, to help the performers certainly not to lose their upcoming releases and also give a contribution, in our little bit of, to keep the underground Techno as well as Property setting running in the course of this tough instant.
The Planet is actually dealing with a significant challenge along with the COVID19 infection. Every one of you artists, keep risk-free, devote the upcoming weeks with your household and let your creative thinking flow, now especially we require your contribution, for our thoughts and also spirit. Our personnel at Reach Coupon will be operating, as standard, to support musical tasks during these tough days, waiting on the instant we will certainly be clubbing once more together, bound as being one."
Ecilo is actually popular for his partner with Detroit inventor Thomas Barnett (Rhythim is actually Rhythim w/ Derrick May), we inquired him just how the situation is at this second in Jakarta (Indonesia).
"Our team are certainly not actually on Lockdown, our condition at the moment is the Authorities notifies everyone to operate from their homes plus all the schools are closed. As for me individually, it definitely influences me since I'm a citizen at Club Kilo Jakarta (Indonesia) and also it's immediately is unfilled and also a few individuals involve the celebration every night. Hey, I completely know it, It's technique too self-centered for me to think business-wise about the money aspect. Crucial for everyone is actually to remain paid attention to their health and wellness as well as be in addition to their family members in these weird opportunities where a virus is keeping getting control of the planet. For all promoters, it is actually time for them to perform investigation that the real skills are actually so our experts can easily possess typically one thing brand new hereafter pandemic. I wish all my close friends throughout the globe, and I truly think our company can encounter it all together."-- Ecilo Jones

George Harrison: Living In the Material World
In the three hour gargantua of a musical documentary, George Harrison: Living In the Material World, Martin Scorsese beautifully auteurs an ode to the late George Harrison, leaving the viewers disappointed when it’s over. The film follows George Harrison pre Beatlemania to the end of his life. The film includes interviews from Harrison’s closest friends, which lucky for us include some of the most famous people in the world with Bob Dylan, Yoko Ono, Paul McCartney, Tom Petty, and Ringo Starr to name a few. It includes the interviews of two of the wives of George Harrison and Harrison himself from his own personal video archive.
Following the death of George Harrison, various production companies looked to produce a film following Harrison’s life, though his widow Olivia Harrison declined because Harrison had wanted to tell his own life story through his video archive. Upon meeting Scorsese, she gave her blessings and signed on to the film project as a producer. According to Scorsese, he was attracted to the project because, "That subject matter has never left me...The more you're in the material world, the more there is a tendency for a search for serenity and a need to not be distracted by physical elements that are around you. His music is very important to me, so I was interested in the journey that he took as an artist. The film is an exploration. We don't know. We're just feeling our way through."
Compared to other Beatles documentaries that employ too large a scope to retain the viewer's interest, Living in the Material World is the best of what a Beatles documentary has to offer. All the characters throughout George's life depict not only the Beatlemania era of his journey but also his pilgrimage to India, and friendship with Ravi Shankar in his discovery of the Sitar. The film explores how India influences Harrison’s later solo work.
The film even includes the man who stole George Harrison’s wife, Eric Clapton. Harrison and Clapton became close in the 60’s at which time Clapton became infatuated with Pattie Boyd.
Pattie Boyd truly should receive a reward for inspiring some of the greatest love songs of all time "Something," "Layla" and "Wonderful Tonight." Her sister, Jenny Boyd, was the wife of the drummer, Mick Fleetwood. Approaching the beginning of the end, the film addresses Harrison walking out of the Let It Be sessions in frustration. The interviewer asks Eric Clapton if he was aware John Lennon posed the question of replacing Harrison with Clapton. Smugly, Clapton replies that he did in fact know. The interviewer follows up with if Clapton ever thought about what it would be like to be in the Beatles. Clapton guffaws in admiration for the Fab Four but ultimately composes himself to admit yes and explores the pros and cons. In this moment Scorsese captures Clapton as not only an expert of Harrison’s life, but also a fan.
Frank Sinatra has described “Something” as “the greatest love song of the past 50 years”. Sinatra was known to mistakenly introduce it in live performances as his favorite Lennon & McCartney song, even though it was penned by George Harrison.
Scorsese highlights the inner rivalries between bandmates with George on the outside of the Lennon/McCartney songwriting partnership. With most of the song writing credit administered to the famous duo, Harrison’s ideas were often shelved or relinquished to the B side. McCartney goes as far as to compare Harrison's songwriting as “something good to get into at the time- artistically and financially”. Preceding the breakup of the Beatles, Harrison already had a repertoire of music for his inevitable solo career. Kind of makes sense Harrison would take to songwriting. If you’ve been Beatle you’d think he'd as least know what a good song sounds like.
In the final moments of the film, Ringo Starr recounts his last moments with Harrison in what he calls a “Barbara fucking Walters” moment, wiping away tears as he recalls the last words Harrison said to him before he died. In the last days of his life, Harrison was residing in Switzerland where Starr went to pay his respects, though Starr’s daughter was receiving treatment in Boston for a brain tumor. “He was very sick at the time, he could barely stand up but I told him, Well I’ve got to Boston and he goes..it’s the last words I heard him say actually and he said, ‘Do you want me to come with you.. That’s the incredible side of George”.
While Ringo is heart wrenchingly honest with his feelings of his close friend, McCartney is guarded. The interviewer poses the question of what he misses about his fallen friend and McCartney responds, “His optimism, creativity and friendship”. Often said to be the Beatle with the best attitude towards the press, his formality highlights how desensitized these boys, who grew up in the media spotlight, are to the public inquires about their private lives. Even recalling the last moments with Harrison brings Starr to tears, whereas McCartney goes on autopilot.
In one of the most poignant moment of the film, Tom Petty recalls a phone conversation with Harrison following the death of fellow Traveling Wilbury’s Bandmate, Roy Orbison. “I don’t even know if I should say what he said to me. But I will anyway. I came to the phone and he said, ‘aren’t you glad it’s not you’, and I said yeah. Yeah I am. And you know he said, ‘He’ll be okay. He’ll be okay. He’s still around. Just listen.’ and that was all he had to say about it”. Petty’s confession breaks the illusion of these rock and roll legends who in truth just barely made it out alive of the eras they helped define. Following the death of not only Harrison but Petty’s recent passing, Harrison’s words strike a chord.
Martin Scorsese spent five-years compiling George Harrison’s video archives to create Living in the Material World. It paints a beautiful image of creative soul to the soundtrack of his life. The film earned six nominations at the 64th Primetime Emmy Awards, winning two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Nonfiction Special and Outstanding Directing for Nonfiction Programming.

The “native” vegetation of the South Plains seems primarily to consist of pricklies, stickers, and pokeys: plants that grab you, stab you, and don’t let go. These tough weeds evolved to cling virulently to passing ruminants and spread like crazy, but they’re a torment for humans, our clothes and tender bare skin. I’m convinced that goatheads, for instance, are tiny manifestations of pure evil.
While traveling through California in 1919, the barb of the cholla inspired London-born author and photographer J. Smeaton Chase to denounce the cactus with this memorable quip: “If the plant bears any helpful or even innocent part in the scheme of things on this planet, I should be glad to hear of it.” If he’d paused to observe the cactus in more detail, he might have noticed the desert rats and birds that take refuge in the cholla’s spiny fortress. Chase’s quote exemplifies a Western attitude about plants, and about nature in general, that frames them as either antagonistic or beneficent. Plants are categorized as “helpful,” “useful,” “beautiful,” “rare,” etc., or, if they are none of those things, they’re just “weeds.” People have cultivated or eradicated plants according to their place on that spectrum — culinary, medicinal, or aesthetic. With the advent of capitalism came the “cash crop”: plants as commodities.
Humans have inadvertently tracked seeds and spores around on their boots, and spread noxious weeds to different continents on boats. They’ve chopped down diverse forests to plant vast fields of one single crop. All of these levels of human intervention have had the effect of diminishing the diversity of species on the planet, and contributing to the next “great extinction” powered by human activity.
Artist J Eric Simpson grew up in the midst of a monoculture, on a farm just outside of Lubbock, Texas, growing cotton and corn. After attending grad school at the University at Buffalo, New York, Simpson — an alumnus of the Land Arts of the American West program at Texas Tech — made his way back to the family farm, where he currently “daylights.” In his art, he deploys the materials and tools of industrial agriculture to critique the “current mode of crop production that implements an anthropocentric agency over the land.”
Simpson’s work combines the keen eye of a naturalist, the sharp mind of a researcher, the activist impulse of social practice, and the immersive monumentality of installation art. In a recent series of performative paintings, all entitled A Painting for Monsanto, Simpson set up canvases out on the vast, flat cotton fields of the farm (pictured at top), mixed various herbicides and pesticides, and proceeded to use an industrial sprayer to apply the “paint.” The result is monochromatic paintings in a yellow that’s somehow simultaneously sickly and vivid.
As luck would have it, my yard got sprayed the very day I went to visit Simpson at his studio. I asked the college boy who came unannounced to dispense the herbicide what was in the stuff he was spraying. Some kind of general broad-leaf weed killer, he mumbled. It made my goatheads shrivel up and turn brown. But their cruel spikes were still left in the dirt. The whole exercise seemed utterly pointless to me.
“The true product is the weed,” Simpson pointed out, describing the cyclical nature of the relationship between herbicide-resistant, genetically modified cottonseeds and the “superweeds” that develop resistance to the herbicides. Of course, both the cottonseeds and the herbicides are the intellectual property of the multinational agro-chemical companies that sell them to the farmer.
That evening, Simpson’s studio, which is in one of the live-work spaces in the Charles Adams Studio Project (CASP) in Lubbock, was still set up with the installation he showed at the First Friday Art Trail the weekend before. Each sculpture was grounded by a little patch of dirt. A pump that was hooked up to a length of clear plastic tubing sent a blue liquid from an herbicide container into one of Simpson’s paintings, a naturalistic rendition of a generic bottle of Roundup, painted using Monsanto’s genetically modified cottonseed as paint medium. The room was suffused with a pink glow, courtesy of greenhouse UV grow lamps.
There was a shelf displaying several pages of heavily redacted emails, drawn from the highly publicized trial that ordered Monsanto to pay a California groundskeeper $289 million for his cancer caused by repeated exposure to Roundup. The emails demonstrate that Monsanto was well aware of the carcinogenic effects of glyphosate, a chemical used in their herbicidal products. They tried to cover up the facts by ghostwriting sections in scientific papers, a fact that seems to also implicate researchers who would be willing to “edit and sign off” on sections essentially written by Monsanto. During First Friday, I watched as Lubbock locals filed past the emails, and nearly every person responded to the exhibit. This is something they relate to.
“There were only four agro-chemical companies controlling 91% of all cottonseed sales in the U.S.,” Simpson told me. “And it’s even less than that now, because they’re all merging with each other.” The German multinational firm Bayer acquired Monsanto earlier this year, while Dow and Dupont merged in 2017. Even without the mergers, these corporations are intricately intermixed due to cross-licensing agreements of genetic traits between them, which creates an oligopoly or cartel-like system. These mega-companies hold extraordinary, pervasive power over this region. “So, in a way,” Simpson says, “the strain is put on the farmer who becomes a bystander to all the ‘big decisions’ happening in the world of bio-technology. The power [that farmers] once had, a diverse market from which to buy products from for instance, is all but depleted. For instance, try to find a local dealer for non-GMO cottonseed. I assure you it is very difficult to do.” He picked up a transgenic cottonseed from where a pile of them were scattered on a video monitor. It was bright and unnaturally blue: about the same color, size, and shape as a blueberry-flavored Jelly Belly. I thought fleetingly about the proprietary blue meth from Breaking Bad.
As pointed out in an earlier Glasstire review of Simpson’s work, using a piece of heavily protected intellectual property in an artwork is pretty gutsy. Though it is extremely unlikely Monsanto (now Bayer) would pursue a lawsuit against an artist who used a scattering of seeds in an installation, the implication is present. (More troubling is the work by Simpson’s collaborator in the exhibition reviewed, Caleb Lightfoot, who made a video of himself in a Bayer greenhouse while an employee of the company.) In a town that is essentially run by Big Ag and the scientific research institutions that enable it, that’s no trivial matter.
Simpson clearly doesn’t kowtow to the powers that be in Lubbock, but he isn’t an antagonist, either. He mindfully emphasizes that he’s not against the farmer, or the scientists, or even against the corporations. “I know personally some people who work for these companies,” he said. “From my experience, these people are not gaining any personal power over the farmer. Nor do they want the farmer to fail. In fact, just the opposite. They are doing intense research to help the farmer succeed.”
So what does he see as the future for the farm? “Realistically, we can’t go back to a time of agrarian subsistence-level farming,” he says. But we urgently need to invest in devising and developing sustainable practices. He has faith that science will help us reach that point, and that art can help us envision it. Simpson has been working on a sculpture that would collect rainwater and solar energy, with an origami-like shape that opens up to receive rain, and closes to collect and store sunlight, distributing the water as needed through a root system. “The idea is that the sculpture would function as a ‘mother plant’ to surrounding vegetation,” he says.
As a CASP resident, Simpson has been extending his efforts out into the community, through curated exhibitions and talks. His curatorial endeavors so far have been outstanding. Each exhibition in the series takes one of the “four vital resources of Lubbock”—earth, wind, sun, water—as its theme. For “earth,” sculptor and ceramicist Nicolle LaMere exhibited her “dorodango” collection—perfect shiny spheres of dirt. And last month, Ryder Richards showed his phenomenal installation Empowerment, for “wind.” I’m eagerly anticipating the “sun” exhibition, opening February 1, which will have “art objects, modular solar panel kits, and floating habitat workspaces.”
With an art studio as interdisciplinary research space, Simpson creates a fruitful dynamic between the fields of art and agriculture. Because CASP studios must engage with First Friday crowds — and these crowds are diverse, not just “art folks” — they serve a public function in Lubbock, and, one would hope, can strengthen different communities through mutual understanding. Simpson wants to create an “actual dialogue” with viewers, real conversations “on topics that impact their local economies and ecologies.” “During First Friday events,” he says, “I’ve been able to meet biologists, engineers, weed scientists, farmers, bankers, you name it, all of whom are able to engage with an aspect of the work, as it was rooted in this place.” The work is “about Lubbock, for Lubbock — it’s hyper-local in that sense,” he continues, but it can be shown elsewhere. Monoculture impacts landscapes all over the world and its effects have serious consequences for the diversity and sustainability of life on this planet.
As research continues to pour in showing that our planet is under threat, that human-driven climate change will have even further-reaching effects than we’ve previously imagined, touching every level of life (even the bugs are disappearing, for God’s sake!), it becomes apparent that we, humans, are the mammalian version of weeds. We’ve spread to every corner of the planet, and wherever we are we choke out other species. We should be looking at the weeds to understand more about who we are.
The landscape here is deceptively simple. It is flat, dry, dusty, with cotton as far as you can see. But Simpson’s work identifies it as a complicated system, with far-reaching effects. The dialogue he’s opening up in this corner of Texas, while clearly addressing the lives and livelihoods of locals, concerns itself with the ways we treat landscape and agriculture and how that will affect the world and our future. There are important lessons in it for all of us.

Day-to-Day Invasions of Privacy 2.0
===Day-to-Day Invasions of Privacy=== Non-profit and free for redistribution Written on December 11th | 2015 Published on December 11th | 2015 Edited on May 6th | 2017 For entertainment and research purposes only
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ===DISCLAIMER=== The Paranoid's Bible and its writers hold no responsibility for the acts of others. The Paranoid’s Bible and related guides are for research and entertainment purposes only. Please visit our blog for more PDFs and information: https://www.paranoidsbible.tumblr.com/ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ===Preface=== A loose series of daily invasions of privacy and how to counteract some of them, consider this a cheat sheet on what can leak your information and increase your overall informational footprint that can in turn increase your digital footprint. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ===Day-to-day invasions of privacy=== Every day our lives are being bombarded by CCTV and the interconnectivity of the growing mobile technology that the youngest of us must have, yet many of us are wholly unaware of the simple fact that these obvious invasions of privacy aren’t the most dangerous. No, you see the most dangerous ones are the ones we take for granted. **For example**: A DVD rental or a contest that you’ve entered. These simple and almost daily used items or rituals and tasks actually put our information into more danger than flashing an elderly woman in front of a CCTV camera located directly in front of the local police station. And that’s why this testament was mad--to simply show you just how much can actually invade your privacy and put your information into jeopardy. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ===The Daily Invasions of Privacy=== **Accounts**: Any website that offers registration can and will gather a large variety of information on you, which can include anything given or not given by you, like your name, age, gender, address…etc **Counteract: ** Besides reading over the TOS, rules and other similar guidelines, it helps to keep your profile as minimalistic and private as possible. There are also some configurations and add-ons you can use to help obscure your information and lessen data gathered. Remember OPSEC and compartmentalization. **Aircraft Registrations**: The FAA requires that all aircraft owners file an affidavit of ownership and each aircraft must also pass an airworthiness certification. The FAA also allows users to search aircraft ownership records by name on their website. On top of this, most aircraft registration record contain the “N-Number” of the aircraft, besides the serial number, manufacturer’s name and model number, airworthiness, prior owners, other registered aircrafts as well as the name of the businesses that the individual owner of said aircraft owns besides their address and possibly more related information. **Counteract**: You can’t, but possibly creating a trust to have said aircraft reregistered under might work. You must consult with your local law professionals to figure if this is possible. **Amateur radio licenses**: The FFC lists license information, which includes name and addresses, publicly for all to see and look up. Like most licenses, you won’t be able to use a P.O. Box. **Counteract**: Don’t do radio as a hobby. **Art**: All artists have tells or quirks that quickly becomes akin to that of a fingerprint or signature. Many artists are unaware of this while most viewers can pick it up. **Counteract**: Work on the basics and build to your own style before thinking of going toward any real paying job, high-end jobs or commissions. Give a glance at our library (https://paranoidsbible.tumblr.com/library) for guides that may be beneficial to you. **Bankruptcy records**: When an individual, businesses, or what have you files for bankruptcy in the Federal courts, a record is kept. These records are available at each state’s NAC. Depending in what state the bankruptcy was filed; there may be one or more locations where these records are house. It’s also possible to order these records through the mail or online in many states. When businesses or individuals file bankruptcy in Federal courts, a record is kept. These records are available at each states National Archive center. Depending in which state bankruptcy was filed; there may be one or more location where these records are housed. It is also possible to order these records through postal mail or Online in some states. These records do show the name of the individuals filing bankruptcy, the city, the state, the date of filing, a full list of creditors, total amount discharged, a final decree or Order of Dismissal. **Counteract**: We can’t, legally, divulge any information or advice as we’re unsure of the laws in each state and how you can go about keeping this from being made public, but one piece of advice we can give is… Don’t file bankruptcy if you can avoid it. **Boat Registration Records**: Own a boat? Then your state of residence can disclose your personal information contained in the boat’s registration records. If you own a boat, your state of residence may disclose your personal information contained in boat registration records. Boat registration records can include a full name of the owner(s), an address of the registered owner(s), value of boat and a history of repairs. **Counteract**: Look in trusts, again. **Blogs**: What else to say? Yours or someone else’s blog can ultimately divulge a lot of information about you and your private life—avoid making a blog, for obvious reasons. If someone else leaks your information, look toward legal action but only after seeking the owner of the site’s host/servers to see if they can remove the offending post and private information for you. **Counteract**:  Don’t own a blog, buy a diary or journal. Remember OPSEC and compartmentalization. **BBS | Bulletins | Message Boards | Image boards | Usenets**: These groups in which you either have a profile or are allowed to post anonymously can and most likely have recorded your IP, ISP, a garden variety of information from META-data like your OS and time zone. You also have the fact that some of these boards\bulletins are hosted by ISPs that collude with various government bodies and have everything flow through a government owned server that collects and catalogs all information possible. **Counteract**: Look toward not posting on these places and simply lurking. You can also, to an extent, reduce your data footprint by customizing and modifying your browser and browsing habits. **Browsers**: IE, FF, Chrome and many others don’t necessarily send your information to the groups that work on and update said browsers, unless they send error reports, but they do hemorrhage information and META-data left and right.  Besides some simple setting changes, there’s not much you can do beyond modifications and customizations. **Counteract**: Look for a guide toward modifying and customizing your browser of choice, like our Firefox Testament (or future IceCat guide). **Business license records | corporations | fictitious business filings**: If you’ve ever read the paper, then you’ve obviously glanced at something called “Public filings”. In essence, this section of the paper is so that you and other readers can find the names of individuals or corporations that have filed for a FBN (Fictitious Business Name). Others names that this can be known as are “Assumed Name, “ “Doing Business as,” or “Trade Name”.  These filings are basically used by the individuals to certify that they’ll be conducting business not as themselves or under their name, but as the name of their business. FBN\DBA records contain the name of the person that filed the business name, their address, owner name and address, the date, location and file number of said record. **Counteract**: None (?) **Consumer feedback sites | Review sites**: Amazon, Ebay, Yelp… any business that allows you to interact while purchasing goods or services, or websites that offer you the chance to leave reviews and comments about services, goods, purchases or about places like eateries or supermarkets. Google, among other Search Engines, can crawl and catalog your reviews or comments, leaving caches in their stead even if you delete the comment. **Counteract**: Don’t interact. Buy and move on, but if you need to check reviews, lurk and don’t interact. Remember OPSEC and compartmentalization. **Coding\programming**: Like an artist or a writer, anyone who works with software also has tells, which isn’t always restricted to just one language or project. **Counteract**: Besides learning several languages and picking through your own work, it does pay to have a third party to review several examples of your work to see if they can pick up a tell you can’t. Remember OPSEC and compartmentalization. **Cookies**: Most, if not all, websites use a form of cookies that basically amount to a form of data that’s stored on your hard drive to collect and store information about you and your internet surfing habits or searches. Cookies allow advertisers to deliver personalized advertisements or gather as much information on you as possible. Cookies also remember everything from how many times you visit a website to what you’ve purchased or if you’ve used a search engine or typed in the URL itself. **Counteract**: Several add-ons and configurations that you can make your browser to counteract this. **Credit Reports**: Credit card companies contract consumer credit reporting agencies, among other sometimes not so legal means, to find and discover new potential clients. These companies usually ask for a list of potential clients with a minimum credit score. After receiving this list, credit companies will send out offers and notices of being pre-approved for a credit card. **Counteract**:  Look toward the master opt-out list. There are several opt-outs to remove direct marketing mail. **Criminal Records**: Law enforcement agencies maintain a database that keeps track of criminal records, which also include traffic infractions. This database is usually used to help locate possible suspects in criminal investigations, besides maintaining records of people who’ve broken the law. Personal information is contained within these records, and also include such items as a finger print, aliases, tattoos and\or scars and other identifiable markings, and even various other pieces of information like known hangouts. Some states and federal agencies also mandate that a DNA profile must be kept on file, too, of certain criminals. All of the data contained in these criminal records is available to the general public. Though some agencies may only provide the name and date of birth with the listing of criminal offenses for an individual, some agencies also provide addresses. There are means of expunging criminal records, especially if you’re proven innocent, but as we’re not technically involved in the legal sector… so, we can’t truthfully provide any information on how to go about this. You can, though, contact a lawyer or an attorney and seek legal advice that way on the removal of your records. **Counteract**: None, save legal action **DMV and Voter Records**: The DMV requires a physical address to be on file, while some also give you the option to have a 2nd option to mail your correspondence. Whenever possible, when it comes to DMV renewals, voter registration, and assessor tax bills…ETC, you can make a central address (depending on state and law) for yourself that is nothing more than a P.O. BOX. **Counteract**: Some states, though, offer an “OPT-OUT” option to have your information kept within the government, only, and never sold or given out. **Drivers Records**: Before becoming a licensed driver, you must obviously take a driver’s test. You usually need to pass a written test and a practical driver’s examination. After a successful completion, you’re issued your license with a unique number that identifies you. Many, who don’t drive, though, will most likely receive a state issued ID card that mostly resembles a driver’s license and also uses a unique number to identify you. Both the driver’s license and ID cards are issued and regulated by the DMV for each state. Though laws may vary, the type of records maintained and collected are always the same. Also, in addition your driving record, a lot of your personal information is also contained within each state’s database. This information usually includes your full name, SSN#, birthdate and legal presence, current address and phone numbers as well as information about your medications, vision and\or possible medical conditions including mental status or ailments. It’s important to note that all of this information collected by the DMV in the US becomes public record. Members of the public, besides many data brokers, may make a copy and examine these records. However, inspection and copying of said records may be limited to the “Use Policy” of your state. **Counteract**:  Don’t be born, ever, in our time. Joking aside, look over your application for your IDs. Some states allow you to ‘opt-out’ of appearing in certain databases. You also should never put yourself down as someone who’s willing to donate organs or tissues in case of an emergency or death. **Fax**: If you have a fax machine or a business that has one then you’re probably aware of the fact that you’ll get advertisements or pranks sent through said fax machine. The  number belonging to your fax machine can range from name and address to several other items like a registration or patent number depending on what you do, what you use your machine for, and how much you use it. **Counteract**: Either ditch the fax or look into the master opt-out list. **Fishing License**: Simply put a license that most states don’t require any test or course to be passed before being issued. Usually a fisherman must provide name, address and a phone number, and also a small fee to obtain. These licenses, too, are available for review and list the name, add and phone number of the person who obtained it. **Counteract**: don’t get one and never fish. **Free or discounted health offers**: We’ve all seen them, these offers of a free blood screen or blood pressure test, but what many of us fail to realize that even though they’re discounted or free… our information is the cost. You probably have seen CVS or Walgreens offer similar services and usually you get asked to fill a small survey or form, which in turn asks a plethora of things like allergen info or medical history concerning this or that. That is where they gather your information from and then use it to opt you into several databases that’ll proceed to bombard you with **Counteract**: Go to your doctor instead of some third party. **Hunting Licenses**: Much like a professional license, many states require hunters undergo a safety course and pass tests in order to hunt wild game legally. Hunter must also renew their licenses on an annual basis. Records include the name of the hunter, address, and date of application and in some instances a phone number. **Counteract**: don’t get one and don’t hunt. ** (The) Internet**: Proliferation of the Internet brought to us free services, items, and samples. These aren’t truly free as they usually cost anywhere from your e-mail address to your name, address, phone and\or other identifiable information. Your more paranoid and somewhat tech savvy individual will use a disposable e-mail address, a burner cell-phone and a nickname or some other moniker. It’s good practice to start doing the same thing and possibly also using a P.O. Box. One other thing to realize is that many people are too ignorant of such things and will also provide their cell-number without a single doubt. This is bad as it causes a bit of a social contagion that reinforces this practice into others, thus causing people to doubt those who aren’t so readily transparent. This means that if you try to convey your unwillingness to provide information or simply state the possible issues behind providing it so freely, you’ll have most likely stirred some suspicions. Simply remind people that you don’t want your information collected by marketers or identity thieves. **Counteract**: Be aware of what you’re giving away when looking toward freebies or making an account. Always use disposable e-mails for freebies and look toward a burner phone and a P.O. Box when you need to give your address out to any sites. Remember OPSEC and compartmentalization. **Internet Service Provider (ISP) **: Your ISP has not only your click-stream but also your IP. They can sell a sanitized version of not only your click-stream but also your IP’s history. Ranging from sites you’ve visited to downloads and even if you connected to any specific ports or chat programs. Not all ISPs keep track of this information or are willing to give it away or even sell it. Some will outright ignore it and not bother keeping track besides what legally is required of them. **Counteract**: Don’t do illegal activity online, or be smart enough to try and cover your tracks or do your research and see what ISP in your area is the best choice for you and your planned activities. A reminder, though, that most IP addresses are now dynamic instead of static, ergo you won’t have to worry much about being tracking through an IP address alone. However, remember that you still can be tracked and that an IP address offers minor data, at best, that includes the location of the ISP’s hardware. **Judgments**: Judgments are the final decision of any court at the conclusion of a lawsuit. The result of the judgment can include terms for financial compensation for the plaintiffs or sentencing of an individual deemed guilty in a criminal case. Records can contain names of both parties involved, judgment amount, and the nature of the conviction if it was a court case, case number, name of the convicted and date of conviction. **Counteract**: Don’t break the law, and look into getting legal counseling. **Mobile Phones/Smart Phones**: A modern marvel that’s more akin to a tracking device than an actual phone due to the smorgasbord of features (both hidden and open to the user). Texting, chatting, taking pictures and phones call all in one device may seem like the smart thing to do to help streamline and further lessen the stresses of life, however through software prebuilt into the phone, many companies and service providers can track, listen-in and monitor what you say and do. The same applies to applications and 3rd party peripherals that can be installed on the phone, too. **Counteract**: Look into jail breaking and modifying you phone, at the very least, or look into purchasing a simple burner phone without all the bells and whistles. If you do get a burner cell, look into changing it twice a year and only using it for calls and nothing else. When it isn’t in use, you should look into disabling it by removing the sim card and battery. It’s also good practice to put tape over the speakers, microphones and camera when not in use either. Outside of that, be careful what you install on your phone and what peripherals you use. Always double-check everything! **No Child Left Behind**: When the ‘No Child Left behind’ act was created there was a (rarely discussed) provision inserted—school district superintendents across the US must hand over records for all high school students. These records contain anything from full names to addresses to medical records and even things like after school activities or even fields of study they excel in. The information within these files are not only highly valuable, but can also be used to mark children as potential threats to the nation. **Counteract**: Check the Leave My Child Alone website (https://themmob.org/lmca/) and the Underground Action Alliance’s website for more information. Some information provided by these websites is somewhat sketchy, at best, but it does provide you some insight and possible actions that you can take. **Online communities**: Any group comprised of people who communicate and interact over the Internet rather than reality. There are multitudes of ways to interact online. Some of the most common are social networks like Facebook. Accounts for most any community usually display, besides a username, various other pieces of information from signup to various other optional fields you may fill in if it so pleases you. **Counteract**: Read the TOS carefully, and go over what privacy settings are granted to you. Obviously don’t sign up for Facebook or other social networking accounts. **Opt-in databases**: When you register for any product or file its warranty, or even get a subscription, you usually are opted into some database or agree for the company to sell your information. Nothing is life is free, and free registrations or warranties rely on the profit brought in from the sale of your information. Most if not all companies and groups put in a clause or contract within their privacy policy or TOS, in general, that gives them permission to sell, share or use your data in collaboration with other companies once you submit online or offline. These forms can include addresses, names, phone numbers, misc personal information, or even credit or tax information. **Counteract**: Obviously read everything very carefully before agreeing to anything. You can also write, within the free space of a card or form, or even in the “Comments” section, that you don’t give them permission to sell your information. **Peer-to-peer (P2P) networks**: Kazaa, Icewire, Limewire and similar programs are very popular for downloading games, movies and music. These programs rely and focus on connections between computers on the network rather than servers. These programs, very similar to torrents, rely on users, who’re downloading, to let other users to download parts of a file or files thus forcing the user to upload as they download. This is especially troublesome as some ignorant users can end up being charged with varying degrees of lawsuits for piracy, espionage, among other things. **Counteract**: Avoid P2P and torrents, only direct download. **Phone Company and listings**: You most likely have a landline phone, if not, a cell phone that you “rent” to an extent from your provider. Your provider obviously offers you a plethora of options ranging from an unlisted number to various items like   basic caller ID to blocking numbers of your choosing. Even though you may pay for an unlisted number, it’s still possible for individuals and companies to get the information associated with your numbers. Counteract: If possible, always have your number unlisted. Be wary of who you give your phone number to and who your provide it to. Using a burner cell for subscriptions, freebies, warranties and strangers is a good route and practice to take up. **Professional License Records**: Each state maintains a record of individuals and companies that are licensed to perform certain tasks or duties. Usually individuals must complete some form of training or education and pass a state exam before becoming certified. The best example would be medical doctors. In addition to completing medical school, each doctor must pass state certified board examinations before he/she can be licensed and practice medicine in that particular state. It is possible for people to be certified professionals in more than one state. If you are a licensed professional, your personal information is publicly available. Many states are even making this information available Online and free of charge. Professional license information will vary by state and may contain, first and last name, type of license and license number, zip or address of residence or practice, license status and record of infractions, date of issue and school attended. **Counteract**: None (?) **Property/assessors records**: Anyone with an Internet connection and simple knowledge of using Google can figure out the exact value and worth of your house, when it was last sold, what it sold for and the date of purchase. But every county within the US has an office of the County Assessor which maintains the records of all properties and land in that county. The CA keeps track and assesses the property values as a means to provide that information to the county treasurer. In turn, the treasurer uses this information for property tax billing purposes. Information readily available in the CA’s records contain name and address of the property owner, names of previous owners, dates of the property when sold, how much property tax was assessed, and what parcel is was or currently is used as. **Counteract**: Nothing as of yet besides using a trust. **Raffles and Sweepstakes**: A lot of sweepstakes, contests and raffles offer the chance to change your life or give you something for nothing based upon the slim chances that you’ll win, but, ultimately, they’re nothing more than centralized data mining operations. Instead of fishing for information or trying to confuse the target into giving away their information, these chances to win prizes simply state: Fill out and win! Name, address, birth date, phone number… the information varies and hardly, if ever, truly limited. This can be sold and given away to anyone, truly, depending on who runs the contest. **Counteract**: Don’t fall for these scams, avoid them. **Rating and review sites**: Digg, Reddit and sites like Rateitall depend on their community to provide content and discussion. Joining these sites may seem like a good idea, but to those who’re aware of your accounts, or if you’re loose with your information, can use your activity to build up a dossier of sorts. **Counteract**: Avoid these sites. Don’t join any similar sites. **Registration Cards and forms: ** Many products come with registration cards beside warranties. These cards allow you activate or simply state you bought the product. But many of these forms try to entice you to fill them out through claims or rebates or sweepstakes or even a credit off your next purchase. Every one of these registries ultimately does very little for the consumer. They ultimately just catalogue your information and help build a profile or dossier on you, as a consumer, which is then sold and given to various third parties. **Counteract**: Unless needed to activate your warranty, double check the fine print and see if you can avoid filing the card or form. If you can’t avoid it, look toward applying, somewhere in a blank space, the statement of ‘I don’t give permission to sell or use my information’. **Rewards Cards**: Reward cards seem like a good idea to the thrifty and frugal shopper—gain points or cash backs on certain items, save some percentage on your purchases or even get put into several sweepstakes for simply buying a candy bar--the issue is that your information is not only gathered but a profile is made based around your shopping habits and what purchases you’ve made. This means your e-mail can be flooded with advertisements, your phone number or cell number can be sold or given to various groups and organizations, and you can even end up with physical mail offering you things or demanding your attention. **Counteract**: Always add one or two items, at random, to your purchases. A magazine or two, some vitamins or supplements, some sort of baby or item for a child… anything, really. You can always simply drop off the extra at a donation box or shelter. You also can create an e-mail address specifically for your rewards cards and use a P.O. Box, if possible, to help obscure your information. **Search Engines**: Google, Yahoo, Bind and other search engines use bots and various other means to categorize and record as much as technologically and humanely possible of all content within the Internet. Most search engines are, in all simplicity, a company that keeps mostly non-identifiable records of keywords and similar items used by their users. There’s a huge industry built up around companies to analyze keywords to use for products and informational searches. **Counteract**: There are some add-ons and configurations that can be done to several commonly used browsers to help obscure your search history and information provided to search engines. **Search Engine + email account**: A large amount of search engines now provide e-mail account services. If you’re signed in while you’re using the same companies search engine, you’re willingly, to them, providing information not only from your searches but also information within your e-mail, too, thus giving them a connection between both the searches and your account. They’ll also most likely have your click-stream information from when you were signed in. **Counteract**: Never sign into your e-mail while using a search engine. Once you sign in, you must sign out, delete and clean your browser’s cache and restart your browser.  The same applies to signing into sites like Amazon or EBay while using a search engine. **Sex Offender listings**: All US states require that individuals convicted of sex or sex related crimes against victims that are classed as a minor or a sexually violent offense register with their state of residence. Though the sex offender registration laws and statues vary throughout the US, it isn’t uncommon for the registered offenders to keep the state appraised of their current address, to notify the neighborhood of their status, not to reside within a mandate distance of schools and to also be subject to random inspections of their residence by law enforcement. Most states now provide an online database with public access to a listing of sex offenders. Sex offender information available on these sites includes photos of the offenders, list of tattoos, scars, address where the offender resides and the crime or crimes that they were convicted for committing. In addition to many of the databases, large quantities of companies have cropped up that also provide databases on sexual offenders. These companies will let you search usually by zip or address or even a simple click and search map. **Counteract**: Don’t break the law. **Social Networking**: MySpace, Facebook, Linkedin or even Tumblr are just a sampling of social networking sites. These sites ask you to provide anything from personally identifiable information like a name or place of education that you visited to owned websites or even a phone address. **Counteract**: Stay away from Social Networks. **Tax Liens**: If a business or individual owes back taxes to the IRS a lien might be placed upon property or assets owned by the business or individuals to secure payments of the debt. These liens might be imposed for taxes owned on real property, personal property or even as a result of not paying income tax. Tax lien information records include name of the tax payer or business, information on property owned by the taxpayer or business, overdue tax balance, address, telephone numbers and income of the taxpayer. **Counteract**: Pay your taxes. **Vehicle Registration**: Any vehicle at any given time, be it driven, parked, moved, left on the side of a road or place into a parking facility must be not only registered but also up to date in your state of residence other legalities you must ensure are taken. Any vehicle you own and register will have your personal information attached to it and the registration. This information is gathered and used as a means to identify and maintain ownership records. If you fail to provide personal and identifiable information, require by your state, you most likely will not be able to register your vehicle and be the target of heavy surveillance to make sure you’re not using said vehicle. Similar to a driver’s records, all information is collected by the DMV in each state and becomes public record. The public can and will make copies, examine these records and sometimes even gather information to sell to third parties. Sometimes these records can be used, like any records, to asses and estimate your income and overall value during lawsuits or paternity claims. **Counteract**: Some newer forms offer you to “Opt-out” of having your information sold or displayed. But, usually, you can, depending on laws within your state, hide behind a trust or obscure some information due to business or not having a permanent place of residency. Please consult your local laws and seek legal counsel before acting upon anything that needs to be registered (like a vehicle…etc). **Voter records**: It’s your right as a citizen of the U.S.A. to vote and take part in the political process but that information, that you supplied on your ballot, becomes public record.  This means your name, address, among several other pieces of information, end up becoming readily available to the public and the Internet. Anyone can simply call or mail the Board of Elections for the county you registered in to obtain your information. Several companies, too, purchase and organize this information to sell to politicians, political parties, watchdog groups and several other organizations or individuals. Some will use it as a means to supplement their online people search engines or to help various “Private Investigation” agencies to create a profile or dossier on someone. To be specific, the information usually includes voting history, income level, addresses, age, gender, election district and state of residence--all of which is public knowledge and easily discovered online. **Counteract**: Don’t vote, which risks you losing your voice. **Voting Lists**: When election time rolls around you’ll usually end up with knocks at your door, your phone ringing off the hook, and several adverts on your door or in your mailbox.  These candidates though aren’t after your vote, personally, they’re renting or purchasing the services of several groups and businesses that have gathered your information from public records or several other sources. **Counteract**: Look toward the master opt-out list. The more opt-outs you do, the higher your chance that you’ll remove yourself from one or more sources that sell your information. **Warranties**: Warranties are those little contracts and guarantees supplied with most anything in this day and age that promises you that your recently purchased item will last or be up to a specific quality standard, and if it isn’t it’ll be replaced ASAP once you provide them with various information like a proof of purchase or identifiable information like your name, address, phone number and several other items. Some warranties won’t work or be considered active unless you register your product within a certain period of purchasing it. Most warranties, albeit listed as free, actually end up selling your information which is then circulated online or to various third parties. **Counteract**: Read each warranty carefully. See what the fine print and TOS say, as sometimes you can simply get away with a “Don’t sell my information, I don’t give permission to use it” on the card itself. **Wikis**: Wikis are largely a collaborative form of an online community gathering and organizing information on a large variety of topics. The most famous Wiki is Wikipedia. Most  Wikis show the IP and username of the editor, when the edits were made and sometimes even pieces of meta-data are shown like OS, if JavaScript was enabled or what the browser used was. Though, like most websites, all Wikis, if not created VIA means of a third party services, can see not only your IP but a plethora of data and meta-data. **Counteract**: Lurk and read, never create an account and participate. **Websites**: A Website is a website. Websites can see a visitor’s IP, ISP, read cookies (sometimes), gather meta-data like your browser’s footprint, some other information like what fonts are on your computer, what add-ons or plug-ins are used or even gather other information from cookies placed by other websites. **Counteract**:  Several add-ons and configurations can be done to your browser of choice to lessen your footprint and data given or gathered. **Writing\typing**: Whether you’re a writer or a casual typist, or even just texting, we all have tells that acts like our signature when writing something out. **Counteract**: Write everything in a word processor and double check spelling and grammar. The above is only but a sampling of the ways our privacy is invaded in our day-to-day lives. There are several means of covering our tracks, displacing certain tells, and even obscuring the profiles or dossiers being built on us, but they’re just bandages instead of a cure for this sickness. The age of anonymity is dying and it’s dying fast. Some things you can do, though, range from making a trust or a LCC or even corporation. You can also work to disappear from public records to simply ending certain habits or trends. Ultimately, though it’s a fact of our day and age that we must accept—we’re being monitored. __References__: https://www.privacyalerts.org/index.php https://www.optout.com/ebook/default.aspx https://www.worldprivacyforum.org/ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ===Afterword== In the end, you can never fully prevent your information from hemorrhaging. There’s no such thing as being 100% anonymous. This is why you must take the proper precautions and work toward privacy that fits your lifestyle. Also, pay your taxes.

10 To Watch : Mayors Edition 21020
RICK HORROW’S TOP 10 SPORTS/BIZ/TECH/PHILANTHROPY ISSUES FOR THE WEEK OF FEBRUARY 10 : MAYOR’S EDITION with Jacob Aere
After years of buildup, opening weekend for the XFL did not disappoint. Four games in D.C., Houston, Dallas and New York aired across ABC, FOX, and ESPN. USA Today noted that it was "up to the product on the field now to convince football fans across the country that another football league is worth investing time into," and after the league’s inaugural game at Audi Field in Washington, DC, it appeared XFL Founder Vince McMahon and Commissioner Oliver Luck "achieved that goal." When the league launched, McMahon was "adamant that the XFL would provide a better entertainment experience by having shorter games." However, the first one "managed to eclipse the three-hour mark.” The XFL also hired Ross Greenburg, the creative mind behind “Hard Knocks,” to produce a 10-minute behind-the-scenes documentary on the run-up to the league’s Saturday launch. In Dallas, close to 20,000 fans braved the rain to see the new Dallas Renegades – with a fair number of fans traveling from Oklahoma to cheer on former OU quarterback Landry Jones and Coach Bob Stoops.
Major League Soccer will enjoy labor peace at least for the next five years, as MLS and the MLS Players Association struck an agreement in principle for a new Collective Bargaining Agreement that will begin with the upcoming season. "As we prepare to celebrate our 25th season, we are very pleased to finalize a new five-year Collective Bargaining Agreement with our players," said MLS Commissioner Don Garber. "This agreement addresses key strategic priorities for the league and our players while also retaining the basic player compensation structure that has been the foundation for the growth and stability of Major League Soccer." The deal is subject to approval by the MLS Board of Governors and the MLSPA. Deal points include increased investment in player spending, greater salary budget flexibility across rosters, players sharing in media revenue, and increase in charter flights as well as expanded free agency. The new CBA is particularly important as MLS adds two new franchises this season – Nashville SC, and Inter Miami CF, bringing the total to 26 clubs.
The NBA All-Star Game gets ready to hit Chicago, with major economic upside for the league and the Windy City. The NBA’s annual all-star break is always a beehive of business activity, from the annual NBA tech summit to NBA Cares activations throughout the host city. The NBA, NBPA, and Nike also have announced that the 2020 NBA All-Star uniforms will pay tribute to the late Kobe Bryant, as well as his daughter Gianna and the seven other people who tragically passed away in last Sunday’s helicopter accident. The 2020 NBA All-Star Game will feature Team LeBron wearing the No. 2 and Team Giannis (Antetokounmpo) wearing the No. 24 – Gianna and Kobe’s basketball jersey numbers, respectively. In addition, both teams will wear jersey patches displaying nine stars, representing those who lost their lives in the crash, including John, Keri, and Alyssa Altobelli, Sarah and Payton Chester, Christina Mauser, and Ara Zobayan. The All-Star Game takes place on February 16 at Chicago’s United Center.
Kobe Bryant was also front and center at Sunday’s Academy Awards ceremonies. Not only was Bryant, who won an Oscar for his animated short “Dear Basketball” in 2018, memorialized in the Academy’s annual tribute to artists and artisans who have passed, nominees and presenters used the occasion to remember him. The first Kobe Bryant tribute of the night came from the acceptance speech for best animated short film, “Hair Love.” “This award is dedicated to Kobe Bryant. May we all have a second act as great as his was," director Matthew A. Cherry said. Meanwhile, filmmaker Spike Lee donned a purple suit embroidered with Bryant's Lakers uniform number, 24. The annual In Memoriam tribute opened with a picture of Bryant beside his quote, "Life is too short to get bogged down and be discouraged. You have to keep moving. You have to keep going. Put one foot in front of the other, smile and just keep on rolling." A public memorial for Bryant and the others who lost their lives is set for February 24 at Staples Center, the site of many of his triumphs.
With February underway, the NBA has tipped off leaguewide celebrations of Black History Month. Celebrations will see all NBA teams don custom Nike Black History Month warmup shirts throughout the month. The Nike Dri-FIT T-shirt features words selected by players that “reflect black history and culture, and our collective commitment to equality and diversity: Activate, Believe, Dream, Empower, Engage, Equality, History, Inspire, Justice, Lead, Listen, Love, Perseverance and Unify.” Another cause strongly backed by the NBA, ESPN’s 13th annual V Week for Cancer Research set a new record, raising more than $8.8 million for the V Foundation for Cancer Research to mark a boost of 6% year-over-year. “We broke the V Week record thanks to the passion of those who work on the various initiatives here at ESPN, as well as support from the Disney TV networks, and the generous response from fans,” said Kevin Martinez, vice president of ESPN Corporate Citizenship. “In particular the new aspects of V Week, including a campaign with Andy Grammer and Stuart Scott Day, connected with viewers and drove awareness and donations.”
Amstel Light and Phil Mickelson are teaming up in a multiyear partnership that will see the launch of a campaign focused on “addressing the challenges in adult male friendships.” Last weekend, Mickelson teamed up with NFL Hall of Fame quarterback and new friend Steve Young at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Though the pair came up a little short in the Pro-Am (and in Mickelson’s quest to win Pebble Beach a record six times), their pairing was a fun preview of the wisdom Mickelson will impart in the Amstel Light ads. Throughout the campaign, Mickelson will provide support and advice to men on and off the golf course seeking to make new friends in his own personal comedic style. Consumers will have opportunities to engage directly with Mickelson, both on social and through on-and off-premise activations. A series of contests will be announced using the hashtag, “#FriendswithPhil” through which consumers will have the opportunity to earn the friendship of the golfer. After little more than a year on Instagram, Mickelson has amassed a respectable 742,000 friends and followers, which bodes well for an Amstel Insta boost.
Twitter has posted better than expected quarterly revenue. It was Twitter's first billion-dollar quarter. The company, which announced earnings last Thursday, also continues to attract new users. According to CNet, in the fourth quarter, the number of monetizable daily active Twitter users -- people who log into the site daily and see ads -- hit 152 million, up nearly 21% from the 126 million in the same period last year. The company's stock rose more than 15% in early trading Thursday to around $38.50 per share. Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey pointed to work that the company has done to make the service more appealing to new users, including its efforts to help people find and follow topics they're interested in. Twitter executives also looked ahead to big events this year such as the Summer Olympics and elections around the world, including U.S. presidential elections. For the Olympics, Twitter execs pointed to improvements in how the platform uses live and stored video, saying Twitter will have "near real-time highlights of the most important events."
French soccer champions Paris Saint-Germain has opened an academy in Miami worth a reported $70 million. The new campus, which is the largest overseen by a European club in the United States and will cost students between $35,000 and $81,400 per year to attend, will serve as the headquarters for all of PSG’s academies across North America. The facility, built in partnership with franchise holder Paris Saint Germain Academy USA, will also be the new home of the PSG Academy’s residency program, which can serve more than 100 players per season. A 20,000-capacity stadium and five training pitches also sit within the property. The academy, which aims to welcome more than 10,000 developing players in the next three years, also has links to United Soccer League (USL) League Two club FC Miami City. While no link has been announced to the David Beckham-led Inter Miami franchise, which makes its MLS debut next month, the new PSG academy will add even more international soccer cachet to South Florida and help solidify the soccer fan base.
The losing team’s merchandise from the Super Bowl is repurposed for charity. According to Yahoo! Sports, the NFL pre-prints championship merchandise with both teams for fan demand being at its highest while the confetti is still falling. That approach leaves the league with half its inventory rendered instantly unsellable. Prior to 1997, the NFL simply destroyed the “losing” merchandise. Since then, the NFL enlists the services of Good360, a charity experienced in redistributing excess corporate inventory to charitable organizations across the globe. Each year, Good360 and the league begin coordinating their distribution plans several weeks ahead of the playoffs. Right now, the NFL is in the process of inventorying all the excess 49er “championship” merchandise at a central, undisclosed location. Meanwhile, Good360 is working its own worldwide network of charities, trying to line up the right locale with the appropriate merchandise. Several years back, the league provided Good360 with a list of approved countries in Africa, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, and from those countries, Good360 targets the appropriate charities with the clothing for people in need.
Dick’s Foundation invests $5 million in women’s soccer. According to Philanthropy Women, the Dick’s Foundation announced a three-year, $5 million Sports Matter grant to the U.S. Soccer Foundation’s United for Girls initiative aimed at increasing opportunities for girls and young women to benefit from soccer. As the presenting partner of United for Girls, the Dick’s Foundation’s grant will be used to create safe places to play, fund coaching and training opportunities, and support soccer programs in underserved communities across the country with the goal of engaging 100,000 girls by 2023. In addition to the multi-year partnership, Dick’s is the official merchandise vendor for the Stand Beside Her tour, which serves as the exhibition and training tour for the 2020 U.S. Women’s National Team ahead of competition this summer in Tokyo. Since 2014, Dick’s and The Dick’s Foundation have pledged more than $100 million to support youth sports teams and leagues in need and their most recent effort is a needed measure to put a spotlight on women’s soccer.

André Bishop, head of Lincoln Center Theater: $1 million Todd Haimes, Roundabout: $922,000. Oskar Eustis the Public Theater: $659,000 Lynne Meadows, MTC: $565,000 Carole Rothman, Second Stage $191,000 James Nicola, New York Theatre Workshop: $178,000
These are the latest known annual compensation for the artistic heads of NYC non-profit theaters, compiled by Philip Boroff in Broadway Journal, who judiciously explains the artistic and financial accomplishments of each, and points out their sacrifices: Rothman’s salary represents a 50 percent paycut from her previous annual compensation while fundraising for the Hayes.
“Not-for-profit leaders forego the potential windfall that commercial producers earn from a blockbuster, in favor of a job with steady income. Yet some company trustees and foundation leaders privately call the biggest nonprofit packages excessive, the appearance of which can deter donors.”

Hamnet and the absent (projected) Shakespeare, his father
Hamnet
William Shakespeare’s only son, named Hamnet, died when he was 11 years old; a few years later, the playwright wrote “Hamlet.”  The Irish theater troupe Dead Centre conjures up the Bard’s boy in the hour-long “Hamnet,” a whimsical, tender, technically innovative avant-garde play that features an extraordinary performance by a 12-year-old named Aran Murphy.

Raul Esparza and Krysta Rodriguez
Seared
Theresa Rebeck’s slight but savory comedy  about  running a restaurant stars Raúl Esparza as Harry, a hilariously mercurial chef-owner of a hole-in-the-wall eatery  that’s become the latest foodie destination. A blurb in New York Magazine has praised Harry’s ginger lemongrass scallops dish, so now the customers are flocking to the place and clamoring for the dish.
But Harry refuses to make it anymore.
“I’m not feeling the scallops,” he says.
Freestyle Love Supreme
Freestyle Love Supreme, the hip-hop improv group,is not so much Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Broadway follow-up to “Hamilton” as it is a subsidiary of Lin-Manuel Inc. …It is designed to feel good-natured and informal, like friends sitting around a dorm room at Wesleyan, even though there are 766 of us and we’re at the Booth Theater…That goodwill goes a long way.
Fear
Two adults are standing over a teenager named Jamie who is tied to a chair. Phil, a plumber, has kidnapped Jamie, and dragged him into this abandoned tool shed in the woods outside Princeton, New Jersey. Ethan, a professor, is trying to rescue Jamie…An eight-year-old girl from the neighborhood is missing, and Phil (Enrico Colantoni, who plays the genial father in Veronica Mars), has reason to suspect that Jamie (Alexander Garfin) has something to do with it.  Or does he?…A play that requires a vigorous suspension of disbelief. Yet, if you can get over that hurdle, it offers three good actors constantly playing with our perspective – not only about who did what but such issues as moral relativism, class tensions, and…fear

“The Sound Inside” is a dark drama by Adam Rapp that keeps us in the dark, literally and figuratively, which works better while watching it on stage than thinking about it afterwards. Mary-Louise Parker portrays a middle-aged Yale professor named Bella Lee Baird, who prefers literature to life, and expects to die soon; she tells us she’s been diagnosed with cancer. Bella slowly develops a friendship with 18-year-old Christopher Dunn (Will Hochman), one of the students in her course…They turn out to share a taste in books, especially dark tales like Dostoevsky’s “Crime and Punishment,” which is one of so many book titles name-dropped during the course of the play that the script could serve as a reading list (which I include in the review.)
Monsoon Season
Lizzie Vieh’s black comedy about a divorced couple permanently underwater in Phoenix Arizona, is clever and merciless, but it is also oddly compassionate….Danny and his ex-wife Julia may be losers who constantly make laughably wrong choices, but they are trying to do right, to be better.

The Critic Unmellowed
From Wall Street Journal interview  with John Simon, 94:
“His penchant for criticizing actors’ and actresses’ physical traits —he once wrote unkindly about Liza Minnelli’s face, and another time about Barbra Streisand’s nose— has also helped to make him repugnant to the city’s cultural elite. He contended at the time, and again to me, that such criticism is entirely legitimate if a performer fails to transcend his or her defects of appearance by force of talent.” (How does one “transcend” one’s appearance?)
On how theater has not declined:
“Things were never very good,” he says.“I don’t really see a decline. Looking back into the past always makes the past look better than it actually was,and the present worse, perhaps, than it actually is. . . Out of, I don’t know how many plays open in a season —a lot of them anyway—there may be two or three even worth bothering with. It has always been so.”
