#and yet our angst Perry writers make it work

Text
A ridiculous problem to face as a Perryshmirtz slash Phineas and Ferb writer is trying to write angst considering Dwampy decided to canonically name their establishments and characters. Are you telling me I'm trying to write deathly angst of militant training and death inside the secret spy organisation named Organisation Without A Cool Acronym. How does anyone here keep a straight face.

Ayesha’s 1k+ Writing Challenge!
Writing Challenge Submission Masterlist
Tumblr media
Hey, everyone, I'm so happy to be back online - I think I was only gone for a week so that announcement was very extra of me - and to be introducing my first writing challenge! I'm so honored and flattered that so many people enjoy my work, and I'm incredibly grateful for your support since I joined this community. Tumblr is my greatest escape, and you've made it a very welcome and comforting one.
A sense of community and friendship is particularly important in these trying times, and I extend my heartfelt prayers to everyone struggling right now. I'm here to listen if there's anything you need to say, and I'm sorry I can't do much more than be a metaphorical shoulder to cry on, and to offer this distraction as a brief reprieve from whatever you might be going through.
In order to present a gift of relief, and to share and create more stories of heroism - not that any of it can ever compare to the courage displayed by our health professionals and essential workers these days - and to honor and promote our collective of Marvel fanfic writers, I've decided to host a writing challenge. You don't have to follow me to participate - although that would be appreciated - you just need to follow the rules I've outlined under the cut. If you need clarification on anything, don't hesitate to ask! I hope you'll join, and I look forward to seeing what everyone comes up with.
Rules:
Your fic can be about any character(s) from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. You can also include original characters that you create. If you want to write a romantic fic, I think it goes without saying that it shouldn't be underage (or having an excessive age gap), non/dub-con, incest, abuse, power imbalance/manipulation (e.g. employer x employee or teacher x student), etc.
The sky’s the limit when it comes to the type or genre of the story, so let your imagination fly! You can write reader-inserts, pairings of pre-existing characters, OCs, or even just solo fics about the character you've chosen. I'm open to canon fics, AUs, fluff, smut, angst, romance, platonic fics, and whatever else you guys can dream up. (If you're writing smut, please let me know, as there are some additional guidelines I'm setting for that.)
Word count is minimum 250 words, and anything above 500 words must have a keep reading tab. Multi-chapter fics will obviously be accepted - and with a lot of enthusiasm! - but please make a masterlist for any such series.
Kindly include any and all warnings that apply to your story.
The deadline for submission is the 31st of December, 2020.
Please tag me @barnesandco in the completed fic - and in every chapter of a series if you've chosen to write one - and also tag your work with #ayesha1kwritingchallenge. If I don't acknowledge that I’ve seen your work within a week of you posting it, please DM me.
One entry is allowed per participant, and you can send in an ask or a DM to participate, in which you should mention the one prompt you would like to use and for which character(s) from the list below.

Special thanks to the following authors, who not only inspired and initiated my desire to write, but then encouraged me, supported my work, and were - and still are - tremendously helpful. Others in the following list I befriended later on, and I'm so grateful that I did, because they've helped transform my experience on this site, too. Point is, all of these people are so kind and amazing and marvellous beyond what words can describe. Thank you:
@samingtonwilson @suz-123 @nacho-bucky @evanstarff @tropicalcap @kentuckybarnes @buckyreaderrecs @mermaidxatxheart @corneliabarnes @buckyland @bucky-smiles @sebbytrash @jalapenobarnes
And thank you of course to my wonderful, magical followers who comment and reblog my stories, and give me all the praise I do not deserve. Thank you for your kindness and your enthusiasm - I cherish it and do everything I can to earn it. Special mentions:
@readerandcinephileingeneral @notsomellowmushroom @sonjashuterbugjohnson @anjali750 @severelytinyeagle @redhairedfeistynerd @parmisaanowl @starnight-charmer @alyxkbrl
I'd like to conclude by saying that I debated whether or not to host this writing challenge now, in a time like this. I decided to do so in the end because I need it. Call me selfish, but I need a reprieve. I need to feel like this disaster that has us surrounded right now isn't all there is to the world. And if I've learnt anything from being on this platform, it's that you're very rarely alone. So I hope that this activity can provide some semblance of hope for others that feel the way I do, and if not, then at least a little escape.
So my last but not least thank you goes to everyone who participates in this challenge and thereby makes this shelter from the world's storm, a little stronger, a little safer, and a little warmer.
I’m excited to see what everyone comes up with, and I look forward to making some new friends. Thank you all and good luck!

march fic recommendations
hello! so I think we all know that sometimes we don’t appreciate writers as much as we should here on tumblr. they are amazing people that write some wonderful stories for us (for free) and they put a lot of time and effort into doing so. to honor that, each month, I’m going to be posting a fic rec list with a whole bunch of stories I have recently read and loved, and that I want to share with you all. and if you find some you like? let that author know their work is appreciated!! (let’s all support authors more!)
Bucky Barnes x Reader
Hold My Girl by @captain-ariel-barnes - this one HURTS let me just tell you. it is absolutely beautiful and does a wonderful job at not only portraying bucky, but also the feeling that I'm sure a lot of couples who were split up because of wwii felt. like I said this story is amazing but it left me crying and my heart hurting - in the best way possible!
Soft by @chillingbucky - oh my goodness did this story hit home for me. for the most part, I’ve been pretty confident with my body but also have wanted to change to boost that confidence even more and then felt worse when I didn’t stick through with my new plan.this story perfectly encapsulates those feelings and it nearly brought me to tears over how incredible bucky was at comforting the reader. when I read this it was the first story I read that day and it put me in such a great mindset!!
Lifelong Love Song Series by @suz-123 - even though this is not a bucky x reader (it’s an oc), this story is beautiful and the way it portrays bucky just feels so right and so spot on. there is fluff, angst, hurt, comfort, love, everything in this story. you should definitely read this series!
The House by @softlybarnes - ahhhh!! that is what I have to say for this story because it is so darn cute! bucky just makes me swoon (as always) and there is a great relationship between him and the reader! also, now I really want to fall in love and buy a fixer-upper house with the guy I marry. overall, if you want something fluffy that is extremely well written, this is one of those stories.
Truth Hurts by @ussgallifreyfics - this story is so different than other fics that tackle this same topic, but it the best way possible! the beginning hurts, but slowly bucky starts to come into the story and it is so sweet. not only that, but there is a lot of power from within the reader, which is AWESOME! heck yeah we can rescue ourselves (but if Bucky wants to help as well, I won’t be mad lol)
Lemon Pie Series by @nacho-bucky - I have reread this series like three times already, and it is just perfection! not only do we get 40′s bucky, but we get a HAPPY BUCKY WHO SURVIVES THE WAR AND GETS TO START A FAMILY! Each chapter/snippet is just so beautifully written, and I get pulled into the story each and ever time. bucky just makes me want to swoon, and if I don’t find someone who treats me the way bucky treats the reader in this series, I do not what I will do. but, this and all cait’s stories are amazing so please go read this, it will make your day!
Thomas Shelby x Reader
If Only You Knew by @im-not-looking-for-forgiveness - while this is technically a tommy x reader story, it really focuses on the friendship between the reader and lizzie stark, which I absolutely loved! it is such a healthy change to see lizzie portrayed in a nice way instead of a bitch as she often is written in stories. we love girls supporting girls, which is this story!
My Dear Charlie by @kadwrites -again, another story that is technically tommy x reader, but focuses on a different relationship, and this time it is between the reader and charlie! what I love about this story is, it highlights the love that one can feel for a child that isn’t biologically theirs, which is just a reminder of how important it is to show our love to others and to demonstrate our appreciation to those who do love us. also, I love that this story focuses on an older charlie, which is something I haven’t really seen yet.
Matches by @rhxegals - now this one really does focus on tommy and the reader, and I adore it! we get to see the reader confront tommy and I love when the reader is his equal in the sense that neither of them stand for being lied to or being left out of things. not only that, but we also see a more vulnerable side of tommy, and we get to understand his protective side a bit more which I am also a fan of!
this drabble by @connerkennt - it is short and sweet but powerful! it really shows (again) how protective tommy is over those he loves and I adore protective tommy! (alfie also plays a role in this drabble, which is always a plus!)
John Shelby x Reader
Something Unexplained by @justauthoring - man do I love john shelby, and if you do too, this is the story for you. just the way that olivia describes how john loves the reader makes my heart absolutely gush! I don’t want to spoil anything, so you just have to read it! (and there are so many other wonderful stories on this blog to check out after you finish this one!)
Steve Rogers x Reader
Beauty and the Beast AU by @kayteewritessteve - I am so so glad I found this story when I did so that I can include it on this list! au’s are some of my favorite stories to read/write, and the fact that this is beauty and the beast and mob!steve is absolutely amazing!! kaytee does such a wonderful job with drawing you into the story and really making you feel the power and emotions of the scene! only the first few chapters are up now, but they are great!
Peter Parker x Reader
Moving On by @midtownpetey -  my goodness, this one really hits right in the feels! I was tearing up throughout this entire story, because it is so beautifully written and really highlights the process of moving on when losing a loved one. it is not a graphic story, but the healing aspect, learning to move on when you feel like you can’t, that’s really what got me!
Harry Potter x Reader
Under the Stars by @lvmosity - this story is just pure fluff and it’s an actually harry potter story, which I feel like is so rare here on tumblr. anyway, I love how it’s just the reader and the golden trio worried about getting dates for the yule ball! there’s no underlying threat, just teens being teens, and harry being adorably awkward!
Scott Lang x Reader
Blue Dresses and Daises by @mypassionsarenysins - I just want to take this moment to appreciate the heck out of this story because it is absolutely amazing! not only is it a scott lang story (who is severely underappreciated! which why? he’s a dork and it’s paul rudd!) but this story is just filled with so much love that it makes me so happy and smiley. definitely a good one if you’re feeling down or you just want something extra fluffy!
Bonnie Gold x Reader
Ring Girl by @blinder-secrets - okay so I recently just got into bonnie gold stories, and man am I glad I did because this one is wonderful! bonnie is just so cute but he is also so protective over the reader, and it makes my heart swell! I love when you can feel how intense a relationship is through writing, and that’s what this is.
Roger Taylor x Reader
Hold Me Close Before I Go by @queenrogah - sobbing, just pure sobbing! well first of all, this story is slightly inspired by the song ‘so close’ from enchanted and I LOVE that song, so I was hooked from the beginning. but this story is very angsty but also mixes together so beautiful to tell this story of lost love between roger and the reader. it combines the past and the present so well, that truly tugs at your heartstrings for an emotional roller-coaster that is so worth it!
Long Distance by @dreamer821 - alright this is super long, but I promise it is so worth reading!! from the beginning, I was hooked and I got to witness this amazing story and all the love there is between roger and the reader. there is a bit of smut in this story, but the whole story really goes to show how powerful love is even when two people aren’t always near each other. it’s one of those stories that can restore your faith in love!
Laurie Laurence x Reader
Lost Love by @lotsoffandomimagines - ever since I saw little women in theaters, I have been looking for a laurie story, and this is the first one I found. oh my goodness, it is AMAZING, and I truly hope that there is a second part. but this story just draws you in and makes you fall for laurie, then comes there with that ending! I know I’m not describing this as best as I could, but trust me, the writing is beautiful and it wonderfully emotional. go read it! (also the gif of laurie is perfect!)
What I Wished I Said by @lillie-writes - do you want an angsty laurie story? well, here you go! this story is the form of the letter, and it made me tear up by the time I reached the end. it is so simple, but so heartbreaking. you can just feel how much laurie loves the reader and how much he wants to apologize, and I just wanted to find a way to hug him and comfort him. you will not be disappointed with this story!
Ransom Drysdale x Reader (Knives Out)
this drabble by @terry-perry- oh my goodness!! alright, first, I love knives out, and second, I love chris evans as ransom drysdale in that movie even though he is an asshole. however, this drabble does a wonderful job at showing a different side of ransom and how dedicated he and the reader are to their relationship!
Haunted by @et-lesailes = this is such a powerful story! now there is a trigger warning for this one so please be mindful of that but this story does a wonderful job at tackling such a difficult topic and how sometimes opening to another person can be exactly what you did. (and we also get to see more soft, non-asshole ransom which is always great!)

MiniJen’s Fic Recs!
So I said I was gonna do it and here it is! One big huge list of fics I love the hell outta for ya’ll to read. These are mostly GF fics, but there are a few SU fics and maybe like several LoZ fics near the end, maybe a few others from other fandoms but still, I can promise they’re all pretty good! And nah I’m not reccing any UF based fics on here, cause if you want to check those out, you can do so here. And with that outta the way, let’s get started, in no particular order and with very little rhyme or reason under the cut! (fyi all the titles are links to make your life easier, even if they dont show up as links on my blog, but you can still click on em and it’ll take you where you wanna go)
All the World’s a Toybox by Straightjacketd Fandom: Gravity Falls Status: Incomplete Ok so I fucking LOVE the hell outta this one because its angsty as fuck and dark. Like fucking dark, like if ya’ll think UF has gotten dark ahahah UF is like child’s play compared to how far this one goes. But that’s honestly one of the things I love about it. I feel like there aren’t enough GF fics out there about what might have happened to our beloved characters had Bill won during Weirdmageddon, but this one puts all ten of the zodiac characters through utter hell and back but the good news is there are spots of hope here and there as the story goes along, so totally go check it out if you wanna cry a fucking LOT because I certainly have with this one!
Monster Falls by Queen Flara Fandom: Gravity Falls Status: Incomplete A pretty cute take on Monster Falls. We get to see how all the various characters deal with their new monster forms and there’s a bit of angst but a lot of fluff too so I like it and I’d check it out if you just want some cute Monster Falls stuff.
Ain’t No Cure for The Cervitaur Blues by Krista Perry (also on Ao3) Fandom: Gravity Falls Status: Incomplete? I think? So I recently reread this one over Thanksgiving break and I remembered how much I ADORED this one! Its chock full of one of the things ya’ll know I’m infamous for in UF: Dipper angst! Which is honestly a kinda common theme through several of these fics but whatever, its all good, don’t worry about it. But yeah this one’s a beautifully written angst storm with really high stakes, great tension, and immense amounts of awesome creativity packed into things! Plus its kinda Monster Fallsish, which is always a good time, so for reals, check this one out cause its one of the ones I recommend the most on this entire list, no lies.
Time Trapped by Polachew Fandom: Gravity Falls Status: Incomplete So if you’re like me and love some Timestuck AU angst, this one has got plenty of that! The ways Young!Stan and Mabel and Young!Ford and Dipper play off each other in this are so great and there really are a lot of sweet moments in here. I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t something of an inspiration for a future chapter of UF I wanna do with a Timestuck premise... But yeah go check this one out its pretty great!
Silent Knight by Split Infinitive Fandom: Legend of Zelda Status: Incomplete This was honestly one of the first really good Breath of the Wild fics I managed to find after the game first came out and its honestly so good. It fulfills my inner Zelink shipper so much imo I died because of how cute those two dorks are but this one also has a pretty damn intriguing plot, one that I am totally down for reading more of whenever the author decides to update it. So go check it out if that’s your thing!
We Had a Deal by freakyanimegirl Fandom: Gravity Falls Status: Incomplete This may be one of my favorite fucking fanfics of all time because of mere premise alone. Also feels, this one gives me INTENSE feels every time I read it because of how absolutely, soul crushingly angsty it is. But yeah its a super neat idea in here, one that I won’t dare spoil to any of you. Suffice to say its copious amounts of Mystery Twins angst and Bill being a complete and utter asshole, so what else is new imo like I said its great yet so simple and idk I just really, really like this one so go read it!
Deerperfalls by Deerper Fandom: Gravity Falls Status: Complete (for a fucking change) Oh damn another Monster Falls fic with a fuck ton of Dipper angst in it what else is new that seems to be my fanfic taste for some reason imo but yeah this one’s a good one. Really sad and angsty but really good. Like Augh I remember the first time I read this over the course of a sick day from school and I was so fucking engrossed in it that I forgot to actually fucking try to get better so ahaha you know its good if that be happening. Check it out and enjoy the angstssssss
Nothing a Little Sleep Can’t Fix by AkitaFallow Fandom: Gravity Falls Status: Oneshot Heyyyyy its one of those angsty post Sock Opera oneshots that kinda might have inspired the angst aftermath of Sock Opera in UF! Ya’ll can’t blame me for that you gotta blame damn good fics like this. But for as angsty as this is, it also has is lovely moments of fluff, which are much appreciated so yeah, check it out!
A Different Way by Seasoned Writing Fandom: Steven Universe Status: Incomplete Bout time I rec an SU fic. And while this one doesn’t have a lot of chapters, it does have a pretty interesting AU concept, so *shrugs* idk I like it, not a whole lot else to say about it though.
Tourmaline by Phantomrose96 Fandom: Steven Universe Status: Complete Goooooodddddd this one is just a fucking ANGST storm but its a damn good angst storm, one that really, REALLY makes you hurt for Steven and pre-redemption arc Peridot. Like I legit cried over this one because DAMN its something else. Go check it out like WOW
Ancient Roots by RandomButLoved Fandom: Legend of Zelda Status: Complete Gooooosh this one is absolutely GORGEOUS and it hurt me so much but I love it so much too! Such an incredibly crafted, heartwrecnhing AU of Skyward Sword, one that made me rethink pretty much the entire game! Its rare that roleswaps between Link and Zelda work so perfectly, but this one is as close to perfection as anyone has ever gotten before and I simply adore it.
Dreamscarring by AnneriaWings Fandom: Gravity Falls Status: Oneshot Another angsty post-Sock Opera oneshot, and again, probably one of the ones that unconsciously influenced UF Sock Opera. Still, really angst, pretty brutal, but ultimately sweet and comforting and that’s what I like in my post-Sock Opera angst storms if Do It For Them was any indication of that.
Heartbreaker by Queenie Z Fandom: Legend of Zelda Staus: Twoshot Yeeeee boi love me some HW angst involving Zelink and onesided Cialink. And this one’s honestly so beautiful, balancing the angst out with fluffy adorable romance and I simply love it.
Finally by Kibasgirltsumi Fandom: Legend of Zelda Status: Complete This is honestly one of my faovirte fanfics of all time like for reals its so damn beautiful and so damn painful and so damn perfect and it strikes me in all the right places and my ship is so damn strong in it and so much happens and its just AUGH oh god I could go on forever with it its so fucking good
Tainted Tale by Flying.Penguin.97 Fandom: Legend of Zelda Status: Complete I’m a sucker for dark rouge protagonists fics, and I’m also a lover of Link angst so this one fucking did it for it. Also it has copious amounts of Ghirahim being a fucking fabulous asshole, so that’s fun and everything. This a good read.
Convictions and Captivity by realfakedoors Fandom: Steven Universe Status: Incomplete AUGHGHGHG FUCK I haven’t even finished fully reading this one yet but DAMN SON IF IT AINT SOME OF THE MOST ANGSTY STEVEN UNIVERSE SHIT I”VE EVER READ again in an example of a fic that puts UF to shame with how damn dark it is this one goes fucking HARD and it HURTS ME but I love it and I really need to finish it because AUGH FUCK
Ask the Right Questions by AceFace98 Fandom: Gravity Falls Status: Incomplete So the idea behind this one is a lot of fun and tbh this has quite a good bit of fluff and humor in it and hey I’m always for Mystery Twins bonding so yeah this one is neat check it out
Three Days by LynnLarsh Fandom: Gravity Falls Status: Oneshot And in an example of something from canon that will also turn incredibly angsty in UF when we get to Weirdmageddon, we get, what else, more Dipper angst! But yeah this one is sad like damn this poor kid wandered around a fucking desolate apocalyptic wasteland completely alone for three days and everyone seems to forget about that but this fic doesn’t and it HURTS and I like it a lot for that
Come Together by Winter_S_Jameson Fandom: Gravity Falls Status: Incomplete I love zodiac centric fics so this one I really enjoy a lot, in large part because it focuses on Ford realizing “oh shit maybe working with others can actually save the day how have I never thought about that before”. Its not super far along yet, but we get some Pines fam angst in there which is always good angst if ya ask me I’m down for that and I like it so ye ye ye ye
Anyway, I’ve Been There by Caleb Nova Fandom: Gravity Falls Status: Complete (but still updates occasionally) Strange how Dipifica is one of my primary OTPs but I’ve recced so far fics centered on those two in this list, huh? Well no more because this one has one of the best developments of the ship I’ve seen thus far. Its kinda slow burn and lowkey but in a really nice way and everyone feels so great and in character and Dipper and Pacifica are adorable together and ahhhh its so cute imo
A Conspiracy of Minerals by CompletelyDifferent Fandom: Gravity Falls/Steven Universe Status: Complete Waahhhhhha? A GF/SU fic writer reccing a GF/SU fic??? Tis madness! But yeah I read this way back before I even started writing UF anf loved it. Its mostly just a bunch of cute little oneshots but I do enjoy the few that are there. They’re pretty cute if ya ask me and the character interactions are sweet enough.
Let Me Clarify by carpenoctem22 Fandom: Gravity Falls Status: Oneshot Bunch more Dipifica cuteness, only this time a little aged up. Not a whole lot to say about it except for that its completely adorable.
Twin Telepathy by blueechofreak Fandom: Gravity Falls Status: Oneshot What can I say but more post Sock Opera angst, only this time with a bit more Mystery Twins fluff added in so ya got that good old hurt/comfort in there, which always makes for a good time.
Host by Neelh Fandom: Gravity Falls Status: Oneshot Some pretty artsy Pines family angst all around in this one, so yeah, good stuff. Pretty short, but still good.
Lull by carpenoctem22 Fandom: Gravity Falls Status: oneshot Hey look, instead of Sock Opera angst we got post the Last Mabelcorn angst! As if that makes any difference imo its still angst no matter how much you cut it and that’s why I like it.
Swear by carpetnoctem22 Fandom: Gravity Falls Status: oneshot Another take on those three days Dipper was wandering around during Weirdmageddon and also pretty fucking heartwrenchingly angsy so you know I like if if its that lol
Enough by Inkblot9 Fandom: Gravity Falls Status: oneshot A really sweet little bunch of fluff focusing on one of my favorite bonds in the entire show, that between Dipper and Ford, which is sadly not utilized enough in GF fics but here its done so adorably and sweet and such good family fluff and I love it
And yeah that’s about it for now. These were all the best ones I could find in all my lists. I’ll be sure to add onto this whenever I find new good fics. But yeah hopefully ya’ll got hooked up with some good fics here! I’ve been meaning to do this for a while, so I’m glad I finally got it carved out. Enjoy!

[Excerpted from https://thequeerreview.com/ ]
As a movie lover, I’ve always been a little averse to writer/directors who only seem to reference other films in their work.  I prefer to learn how they view things through the prism of their life experiences, not cinematic ones. Quentin Tarantino has certainly come across as a movie encyclopedia throughout his career, yet in his case, films so clearly ARE his life.  He finds joy from a breathtaking set piece, a surprising turn of phrase, or that perfect marriage of visuals and music. I can easily imagine how thrilled he must have been when watching the kinetic opening sequence to Trainspotting.  You can almost see him filing away a great line like, “All I want out of life is a 30 share and a 20 rating” from Network and desperately wanting to make his own mark some day.  He obviously has done so, but time marches on, and while he still has a singular voice, he has publicly questioned his own desires to continue making films.  With that in mind, he seems to have poured all of his angst into Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood, one of the most problematic yet entertaining films I’ve seen in a long time on the topics of aging and relevancy.
Set gloriously in 1969 Los Angeles, the film follows alcoholic, fading star, Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt), as they try to stay afloat in an industry that has discarded them to make room for the new shiny pennies. As embodied by rising stars Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie) and Roman Polanski (Rafal Zawierucha) who move in next door, Rick knows he’s just one small fence and a pool party away from scoring a role in the hot director’s next film.  His reality, however, sees him relegated to playing bad guys in TV Westerns.  Cliff, even lower on the totem pole, acts more like Rick’s personal assistant than as a stuntman these days.  An early scene with an old school agent (Al Pacino, overdoing the Jewish stereotype to cartoonish effect) leaves him with the option of escaping to Italy to make Spaghetti Westerns. Pacino calls them “pictures” and I’d like to propose we resuscitate that amazing term!  Rick will do anything to stay in the game.  Simultaneously, we intercut Rick and Cliff’s adventures with that of their neighbors as Sharon and Roman drive fast, dance at parties, and generally live that charmed life where everything is still possible.  I mean, wouldn’t you have loved to have gone to the Playboy Mansion and get whisked away by Mama Cass or get ogled by Steve McQueen?  Also, lurking in the background, we see the Manson Family ambling through the fringes of society. History, of course, tells us where all of this is headed, but Tarantino is less interested in that, staying focused on his fictional characters’ dying hopes and dreams.
The story takes its good, sweet time getting anywhere.  Shaggy and rambling, it reminded me of Inherent Vice in that stoner/hangout way, but Tarantino knows film structure, and what seemed random feels intentional and necessary in retrospect.  Yes, had he cut out half of the shots of characters driving around to an endless array of 60s pop songs, the film would have been 30 minutes shorter, but Tarantino has gone for a fully immersive experience here.  He wants you to know exactly what Los Angeles felt like at the time.  We get the inky blacks of the Ventura freeway, the neon overkill of Hollywood Boulevard, and the sunny casualness of Westwood Village, and I wanted to live inside legendary cinematographer Robert Richardson’s beautiful frames.  Besides, we would have been robbed of a great sequence in which Cliff speeds from Rick’s house to his trailer behind a drive-in theatre.  He greets his precious pitbull Brandy for a long, slow, viscerally engaging dinner scene. Brandy waits patiently as Cliff plops kibble and canned food into a giant bowl.  It’s all so casual until you later realize everything has a purpose.
Same goes for a fantastic set piece in which Cliff picks a fight with Bruce Lee (scene stealer Mike Moh) or an extended sequence on the set of a pilot where Rick meets his match in the body of an 8-year-old co-star (the wonderfully self-possessed Julia Butters).  Fosse/Verdon Emmy nominee Margaret Qualley as one of Manson’s followers also makes a great impression as she continually crosses paths with Pitt’s character.  The highlight for me, though, gave us Sharon Tate talking her way into the Bruin Theatre in Westwood to watch herself on screen in The Wrecking Crew. I loved her innocence and pride as the audience laughed and applauded her performance.  When entering the theatre, she poses for a picture with all of the goofy charm our current selfie culture lacks. In fact, I found it so refreshing that the photographer snapped the pic of Sharon alone instead of posing with her.  Tarantino, in this moment, gives Sharon back to us, reframing her as a promising talent instead of as a murder victim.  Robbie, despite having very little dialogue, brings a magical presence to the film. It feels like an unexpected gift.
Tarantino overstuffs the movie with tons of cameos.  Some work better than others.  Kurt Russell gets some laughs as a Stunt Coordinator who absolutely does not want to hire Cliff, and Dakota Fanning creeped me out as Squeaky Fromme.  Many of the lesser known cast members, however, made a much bigger impression.  Austin Butler gives Manson’s henchman, Tex, a chilling edge, while Nicholas Hammond (Friedrich from The Sound Of Music, you guys!) perfectly captures the phoniness and transparent negotiation skills a director needs in order to get what he wants out of his actors. Talented actors like Lena Dunham, Damian Lewis and the late Luke Perry feel plopped in simply because they wanted to be in a Tarantino film.  It’s a lot to absorb but doesn’t ruin it.
None of this would work quite as well as it does, however, without DiCaprio and Pitt’s great chemistry and committed performances.  DiCaprio proved in The Wolf Of Wall Street he had a gift for an over-the-top style of acting, but he outdoes himself here.  Insecure and short-fused, he taps into Rick’s rage and despondency yet never forgets to entertain the audience.  It’s a very showy piece of acting, but also surprisingly moving.  Pitt adopts a more laconic style, the better to conceal his astute observations, whether it be of Rick himself or of the dangerous cult which grows insidiously closer to him.  Moreover, he knows exactly how to make his scenes with his dog sing.  Both DiCaprio and Pitt walk that fine line between broad comedy and genuine pathos, and do so to perfection.
With its extended length, there’s plenty of time to reflect on where Tarantino’s headed.  The cumulative effect of all this casualness slowly reveals his central thesis, which I found disturbingly conservative yet intensely relevant. Those in power won’t give up so easily.  Rick and Cliff aren’t going to let the young upstarts and the hippies get in their way.  They intend to fight for old Hollywood, for a time when films had a classic sheen, before the 70s gave us antiheroes and grittiness, before life got messy with Vietnam, Watergate, assassinations, and yes, the Manson murders.  They want to make America great again.  God help us all.  He may employ an overused method of his to make his point in the shockingly graphic, insane final half hour, but it still works like gangbusters and all comes together in the end.  The final shot of the movie packs a quiet, lovely, heartbreakingly emotional punch.
Tarantino takes a flamethrower to the influx of the counterculture yet disguises it with a wistful nostalgia.  He’s tapping into a similar feeling which gave rise to our current political “leadership”, yet finds something sweet at its center.  Problematic messaging?  Sure, but not as pointless as it first appears.  Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood, like its title suggests, embraces a fairytale quality to make some scabrous observations about ego, about aging, and about the thirst for a seat at the table with all the newbies out there ready to take your place.

List of Sherlolly Prompts as of 3/8/2017
Here is a link to the very informal Sherlolly Prompt Fest FAQ
Below is the list of prompts submitted to @holidaysat221b.  Where possible, we have tagged the submitter so that credit can be given if a prompt inspires someone to write a fic or create a piece of art.
Some submissions were specifically labeled as Art prompts, and they have been separated into their own category.  However, if you are a fic writer and one of the art prompts calls to you, go for it.  Likewise, if one of the other prompts makes you want to draw, have fun with it!  Prompts that have been filled at least once will be followed with an *, in case that influences your decision to work with one.
We only ask three things:
1) If you use one of the prompts on this list, please remember to credit the prompt and prompter somewhere in your fic summary/art description or in your notes.  It’s the polite thing to do.
2)  Please submit an ask or message @holidaysat221b with a link to your work, the prompt you used, the prompter, and how you want to be identified (in cases where your Tumblr and fic/artist name are different).  This will allow us to share your work with our followers and tag the prompter (if possible).
3)  We have set up a Sherlolly Prompt Fest Collection on Ao3.  If you are planning to post your fic or art on Ao3 and would like to add it to the collection, please do.  As of this moment, the collection is open and unmoderated.  Please remember to credit the prompt and prompter in your fic/art notes.
On to the Prompts as of March 8, 2017
Art
Art prompt:  (I’ve wanted this like burning for five years, I’ll never give up asking)  Sherlock and Molly, the cake scene from Sixteen Candles".  Only in the morgue and Molly’s wearing the lab coat.  -  @sunken-standard
Art prompt:  Potter!lock.  Don’t care if it’s student Sherlock and Molly in their house robes, teachers, wizarding professionals, a recreation of the Order of the Phoenix group photo with Sherlock characters instead.  Whatever.  Just as long as it’s Potter!lock.  -  @darnedchild
Art prompt:  Molly and Sherlock’s first real date gets interrupted by a case.  Are they dressed up for a fancy evening, or wearing something more suited to fish and chips and a walk around the park?  -  Anonymous
Crossovers/Works set in or inspired by another specific fictional universe (ie Potter!lock)
I’d really like to see a Daemon (from the His Dark Materials books by Philip Pullman) version of Series 3/TAB/Series 4 (any or all of those), especially when it comes to the ILY scene.  -  Kay
iZombie!Sherlock – Think of this, if Sherlock gets infected we have: 1) Sherlock with white hair 2) Sherlock getting brains from Molly “for experiments” 3) Sherlock getting different attitudes (hippie brain = hippie!Sherlock) 4) Paler than normal pale Sherlock 5) Sherlock with red bloodshot eyes.  Also:  If Molly Hooper gets infected, it’s like she’s the Liv Moore of Barts.  Lestrade as Clive (and relieved to be not only depending on Sherlock to solve crimes).  Sherlock deduces Molly’s hair color and tan (because Molly can’t show up to work with white hair, even whiter skin color, and very slow pulse rate).  Major asshole Boss being the one shipping tainted Utopium to Britain.  -  The Silent Fangirl
Superwholock!Sherlolly  -  The Silent Fangirl
Doctor Who!Sherlock - Molly Hooper as a companion  -  The Silent Fangirl
Me Before You!Sherlock  -  The Silent Fangirl
Molly Hooper as “Mary Reilly”.  -  @darnedchild
Dracula!lock, but maybe mix it up just a little.  Sherlock as the object of Dracula’s affections (Mina) and/or Molly as the vampire expert (Van Helsing)?  -  @darnedchild
NEW – Sherlock and Lady Molly of Scotland Yard.  Molly Hooper as Lady Molly from “Lady Molly of Scotland Yard” with her crime solving partner Mary (Mortstan).  (Note from Mod - as of 3/8/2017, there are 21 days left to listen to the first three episodes of “Lady Molly of Scotland Yard” via BBC Radio 4 Extra on demand here)  -  @lullikiish
NEW – A Hades and Persephone AU with Molly as female Hades (the unrequited love at first, the proximity with death) and Sherlock as a male Persephone (the curiosity, the lack of eating).  Irene would be a great Poseidon (the chaos provided by the ocean, the sailor knots).  As for John, he would be a great Hermes!  -  Kay
Song fic/Inspired by lyrics
Song Fic:  Adele’s “Water Under the Bridge”  -  @darnedchild  *
Song Fic:  … I would love something based on “Samson” by Regina Spektor please.  -  @chelle812

OT3/Sherlock, Molly, and ?
A case involving wine and stolen spatulas leads to Mycroft Holmes being attracted to Molly Hooper.  Too bad Molly’s had enough of the Holmeses, and Sherlock mooning over her really isn’t helping.  (Molly Hooper/Mycroft Holmes/Sherlock Holmes)  -  The Silent Fangirl
Molly wants to meet The Woman.  Irene and Sherlock are still friends, and Molly is curious.  Much to everyone’s surprise, Molly and Irene hit it off fairly quickly.  (Sherlock Holmes/Molly Hooper/Irene Adler)  -   Anonymous
When Sherlock is injured and stuck in a cast up to his thigh, Mary and Molly find out JUST how grumpy he can get.   They end up putting him by a window with binoculars, his pain medication, snacks, juice and his mobile.  What happens next?  (Molly Hooper/Sherlock Holmes/Mary (Morstan)Watson)  -  @penaltywaltz
Everything Else
Sherlock is undercover.  He’s renting a small place and he’s trying to fit in with the extremely old fashioned community that is probably hiding a deadly smuggling ring or something equally bad.  He ends up calling on Molly to come help.  Since he’s already established as an unmarried man, his ‘sister’ (or other family member) arrives for a visit.  Cue living in the same house while hot for each other type shenanigans while pretending to be siblings under the watchful eye of some suspicious townspeople.  -  Anonymous
Molly’s school reunion – Sherlock assumes he’ll be needed to help Molly show everyone up.  The catch:  Molly’s been a beloved peer, so it’s him who gets the obligatory “you hurt her, we’ll end you". :)  -  @mychakk
Sherlock sees a woman on the street.  Instantly intrigued (you can choose as to why) he follows her.  -  @mel-loves-all
Molly loves wearing Sherlock’s house robes.  -  @mel-loves-all
Molly has a piece of body piercing jewelry or a tattoo located somewhere that surprises and titillates Sherlock.  -  @mel-loves-all  *
Whenever Molly is close, Sherlock unconsciously always seems to need to touch her in some way after they start dating.  He doesn’t notice it, but Molly does.  -  @mel-loves-all
A midnight dance.  -  @mel-loves-all
John tries to set up Sherlock with a girl.  Unsurprisingly, there are a lot of contenders.  And what does Molly have to say about that?  -  The Silent Fangirl
Through unexpected circumstances, Sherlock and Molly get engaged.  It doesn’t end well.  Crack!fic  -  The Silent Fangirl
Eurus Holmes ships the Sherlolly.  So does John and Mycroft.  Soon, everyone gets dragged into the Sherlolly craze.  Crack!fic  -  The Silent Fangirl
Molly lives in the flat across from 221B.  You know, the one that exploded?   Yeah.  But before that, there was a) looking at the hot naked guy in the window b) said hot naked guy crashing into her flat because he just wants to c) her traitorous cat crossing the street to hot naked guy’s flat.  -  The Silent Fangirl
Sherlock:  A TV series featuring a hot guy with awesome deductive skills, his best friend the doctor, the exasperated detective inspector, the sweet landlady, and the pathologist.  And no, the pathologist isn’t in love with the hot guy. -  The Silent Fangirl
Molly stops being Sherlock’s pathologist, and starts being THE Pathologist.  BAMF!Molly  -  The Silent Fangirl
This, Sherlock thinks through the haze of cocaine, truly is the worst form of torture.  Mycroft and Molly’s wedding through Sherlock’s drug-addled POV.  -  The Silent Fangirl
Molly commits suicide, but only Sherlock thinks she didn’t.  He may not be wrong.  -  The Silent Fangirl
When John Watson dies, Rosie is given into the care of her godparents.   Problem is, they aren’t exactly on speaking terms.  Bonus for Harry Watson appearance!  -  The Silent Fangirl
Molly nearly gets hit by a speeding car … until Sherlock pushes her out of the way and gets hit himself.  H/C  -  The Silent Fangirl
Molly in labor.  After watching Mary in labor in TST, I kinda wanna see a funny take on Molly giving birth to her and Sherlock’s child.  Maybe something like Molly being in pain, she wishes out loud she’d never had sex with Sherlock, while Sherlock logically points out how well they emotionally and biologically fit together.  -  Anonymous
Fluff. Molly has been hospitalized for whatever reason.  She decides that she is feeling better and just wants to go home.  However, the hospital does not want to release her yet.  So Molly decides to leave AMA (against medical advice).  She feels she can recover at home just as well and also she is eager to get back to work.  Besides, who is going to know?   This is something someone might expect from Sherlock, but not Molly.   How long before he finds out?  What is his reaction?  -   @shadowyqueenbeard
Angst.  Molly discovers she is pregnant and is not happy about it.  Although she would love to have a baby at some point, right now is not the time.  She and Sherlock do not have a commitment and her career is going well.  She plans to terminate the pregnancy.  Sherlock finds out and tries to stop her.  He please with her to change her mind, marry him and be a family.  Is this just a control tactic or does he really love her?  -  @shadowyqueenbeard
Molly discovers there is Sherlock Holmes RPF (Real Person Fiction) on the internet.  She’s shocked to find that someone called Sherlolly4vr74 has been writing fic about her and Sherlock, and they seem to have a dedicated fan base.  Some of the stories are very sweet and romantic, some of them are hot enough to give her NSFW ideas.  Who is Sherlolly4vr74 (Is it Anderson?  Mrs Hudson?  Mary?  John?  I bet it’s John.) and is Sherlock aware of the stories?  -  @darnedchild
Eurus has been known to put on a persona and disguise to get close to people for information – she was Faith for Sherlock, E and the psychiatrist for John.  What if she had also spent some time around Molly prior to the events at Sherrinford?  What information would she have gleaned about her brother and his pathologist?  -  @darnedchild
Can they be R rated. Because I feel Sherlock would not muck about, with telling Molly what he would like to do to her, he would not use cute little names for all her female parts and would go into great detail, like all his cases. She would be his very serious case. Yes he would most defiantly do a lot of research on pleasing her. Write it however you are most comfortable with.  -  @oliverfel4
Sherlock and Molly are getting married!  It’s time to work on the guest list for the wedding, and suddenly they are faced with the question—Do they let Euros come, or not?  -  @celticmoonbeam
Shipwrecked Sherlolly—Sherlock saves Molly from drowning.  -  Anonymous
Euros leads Sherlock to believe that he failed, and Molly was killed after the ILY scene.  Much angst ensues as he blames himself for her loss … but then we get to see the happy reunion scene when he learns she’s alive.  -  Anonymous
Moriarty trying to up Sherlock by sleeping with Molly, but the joke is on him, as Sherlock and Molly knew each other from secondary school/uni and were each other’s firsts.  They can be regular (exclusive) lovers too.  -  @mychakk
Mary as matchmaker.  At John and Mary’s wedding, Mary feels a little sad when they leave him alone to go dance (“What about you?”).  She decides to make it her mission to help Sherlock find a girl so he’s not alone anymore.  And this former agent has no trouble figuring out the potential between Sherlock and a certain Molly Hooper … (Up to you whether or not you want to throw in a Janine segue before she decides to set him up with Molly.  And feel free to cover Sherlock being shot!) -  @celticmoonbeam
Molly discovers she’s pregnant with Sherlock’s child at the worst possible time:  while she’s with his parents, being hidden away, and the two are pretending to be just friends.  Bonus if they figure it out before they’re told!  -   @penaltywaltz
After the events of TFP, Molly and Sherlock get closer.  Suddenly, though, he pulls away and starts flirting with a coworker of hers, sometimes blatantly in front of her.   It isn’t until an event at Barts that the truth comes out that it was all for a case.  -  @penaltywaltz
Molly finds out that as a child Sherlock liked the book “The Westing Game” and for one of his birthdays she arranges a vacation mimicking the plot of the book, even if none of them really fit the particular characters.  -  @penaltywaltz
Sherlock wants to make a gourmet meal for Molly for a special occasion, but he doesn’t seem to get it quite right.  Fortunately, a friend/relative is willing to help.  -  @penaltywaltz
Sherlock moves in with Molly and begins perusing her book collection, picking up random books that have interesting looking covers, and the next thing Molly knows he’s turned into a fantasy buff.  -  @penaltywaltz  *
Non-established Sherlolly.  Sherlock gets a hold of Molly’s phone one afternoon and can’t resist snooping.  He’s surprised to see a folder in her photo gallery marked “Special” and it’s all photos of him.  -  @penaltywaltz
NEW – Have you had sex? – After Euros asked that I somehow thought “Molly??” (as Sherlock says, Irene only texts him, he doesn’t reply).   Later it seems that Euros is the only one who ever has noticed that Molly causes some emotions in him.  So my theory is that something happened between Molly and Sherlock, it happened pretty recently, somehow (stressful night and they talked or they had some drinks and somehow one thing led to another) they ended up having sex; but Sherlock wasn’t good at dealing with it after or something urgent came along and he didn’t really consider Molly’s emotions, he ran off right after or in the morning, and that could be the reason why Molly didn’t pick up the phone first and was in a bad mood during the “ILY scene”.  What happened between them recently is the reason why Molly is a bit rude to Sherlock when he calls, and the reason why she gets so emotional and raw so easily over the I Love You thing, and why she so easily tells him to say it first.  Well, then when Sherlock says “I love you” he finally realizes fully that he really does love her too, and that he is capable of loving that way, and finally sees how easy it could be and what he could lose.  Then after this whole thing he goes to talk to Molly and explain things to her.  -  @lullikiish
NEW – Complete me as a person. — Scene that popped into my mind.  Irene has been texting Sherlock again, Sherlock in the end almost agrees to meet her for dinner, but as he’s walking out of his flat while Molly is there looking after Rosie he sees Molly in kind of slo-mo in the golden evening sun holding Rosie and being all sweet.  Maybe already something a bit has happened before between them, some flirting, etc.  The talk with John about a relationship completing him as a person is on the back of his mind.  He walks out, but midway down the stairs while taking his phone out (symbolically in darkness compared to that evening sun) he realizes that he misses that warmth and Molly, and realizes that is what completes him.  He takes out his phone and texts he’s not coming and then goes back upstairs.  Sees Molly all adorable and confused/surprised in this beautiful light and maybe goes to kiss her, etc.  -   @lullikiish
NEW – A post TRF fic, where Sherlock takes Molly with him, but they return to London a couple years later than in canon because Molly got pregnant along the way (or even twice), so now they are three/four of them instead of two?  -   @mychakk
NEW – Victorian “Hooper”lock—Molly in disguise as “Hooper” the man, and they work together on a case and sparks fly.  They flirt and all, and Sherlock can’t figure out right away that she’s a woman, and I think it might not even bother him that much.  -  @lullikiish
NEW – “We had chips.  She liked me.” – Sherlock in TLD.  What could have been had he and Molly gotten chips in TEH:  A kick to Tom’s butt.  Happy greeting (a hug at least!) at the end of TEH.  Quite a lot of sex with Sherlock instead of Tom.  Molly the best man’s date.  A (sophisticated. Or not) Molly/Janine cat fight for Janine hitting on SH moments.  Dancing, so much Sherlolly dancing (and no leaving early).  Probably no Shezza (Shezzer?)—which, hmm, is a shame (But maybe they’ve their own not-being-on-a-sex-holiday-but-sexing-a-lot time).  A real proposal to Molly.  Molly at family Christmas, maybe even a Christmas wedding.   Solving CAM without the threat of exile sharpens Sherlock’s deductive abilities.   No Norbury as Molly’s already expecting their first offspring, so Sherlock doesn’t taunt needlessly.  Mary as the Sherlolly baby godmother as she’s alive!  Culverton Smith is taken down by the duo of Mary and Molly while the latter gives birth there (because the ladies are awesome, plus Mrs H tackles him down).  John is so impressed he doesn’t look at any other women.  Molly’s big heart brings Eurus from her metaphoric plane the moment she steps into 221B, plus baby Holmes wins her heart too.  The Holmes family reconciliation and Eurus is in therapy instead of being a multi-killer.  Baker Street Boys Team continues while Baker Street Girls Team gives them a run for their money.  Mycroft asks Lady Smallwood out himself to her astonishment and internal squealing.  Mummy Holmes gets more grandkids than she could’ve imagined.  And basically, everyone walks happily into the sunset.  The End.  Please note, some things can obviously be modified.  -  @mychakk

“Thwarted” Chapter 48 Review
@perrydowning because who needs sleep???
You surprise-updated on me, sneaky sneaky Perry!! Also SO SORRY THIS IS LATE. I did finish writing it at first but Ao3 hates me and refreshed the page and I lost my comment. THEN I got a terrible migraine and took a nap BUT better now and rewriting this baby up at 3.30 am because THAT'S HOW I ROLL.
To start off, I feel incredibly awful about the Esharans suffering at his hands, especially Tet Jarmash and Jan Kressin-Vryn. Their sections were a bit hard to read, but necessary and I'll get into why in a little bit. You can understand where they're coming from. Kylo, if he wasn't so hellbent on vengeance, is dealing with consequences of his dictatorship (in ways, it is, I find). Of course not everyone is going to just sit back and take your take-over lying down, you silly man-child! Not to get political, but these people are essentially being oppressed, especially vocally, and can't express opinions that go against the regime. Doing so is seen as a crime punishable by death. They've lost people and don't want their freedom taken. Do their methods going about trying to "make a point" to the First Order make them right? Absolutely not. Millions of innocents died and that's never the price to pay to get your point across. I don't agree, but I understand. I will say I gave a clap for Tet; she put up a fight against Kylo's Force abilities and I admired that. But in the end, it wasn't enough against a strong Force-user like Kylo. I felt the worst for Kressin-Vryn. Death is "too good" for him. Nope, Kylo needs him to suffer immensely. And what better way than frying his memories of his deceased beloved and dying with the knowledge you no longer remember them? Absolutely chilling, heartbreaking and brutal, but oh so Kylo Ren when you decide to fuck with him.
I feel awful for what's coming for the families of the parties involved. We've only seen a fraction of what Kylo has planned. He only got SOME of the people involved in the bombing, after all! *shudder*
Right, onto Kylo Angst.
Oh, Kylo. My poor, hurting, incredibly moronic and thirsty child. I find myself crying for our Galactic Idiot in this chapter.
As a reader who LOVES angst and drama, I absolutely LOVED Kylo Ren in this chapter. We got to see the side of him I think a lot of "Thwarted" readers may have side-stepped around, because at the end of the day, this is a story about Kylo and Rey and their character development and journey from enemies to lovers. Sure, he's been a great boyfriend and over the moons in the galaxy since Rey said those three words back to him, BUT everyone forgets, I think, that he hasn't really changed just because Rey is with him. I mean he has made some changes, but none that will overall make him rethink himself, I find. Kylo hasn't really had that "Wow, what I've been doing is SO not okay. I should work on that and fix myself" moment, and we got to see this chapter that Kylo will have a LOT to answer for, both to Rey and to himself. The 'monster' Rey claimed him to be once is out, and Kylo will have to own up to it.
Seeing Kylo off the rails was absolutely crushing, but in the best way possible! You see the worst of him when the best of him is taken away. He's right at the edge of the cliff to madness and wants to give in but his bloodthirsty need for justice - and possibly the hopes that Rey will come back to him - keep him from giving in and completely losing his mind. I didn't find him sadistic at all during his rampage for his skewed idea of justice. It is totally unnecessary and his grounds for doing so have really no basis. BUT I do think that Kylo DID need this; this need to just release all this pent up energy, a way to relieve all these bottled up emotions because really, this man-child has no real way to cope in a positive way. He's passionate by nature and expresses himself to the height of his ability. He never does anything in halves, I find. It's all or nothing. And in dealing with his "justice" towards the Esharans responsible for the bombing and, indirectly, responsible for Rey's condition, he's dealing with it that exact way. Imprisonment is out of the question. Death is too good for them. He feels like his heart has been carved out of his chest and he wants them, in the worst ways possible, to know even a fraction of how he feels when Rey isn't there.
Kylo's heartbreak spells out doom for everyone, and no amount of pleading or bargaining can move him. I do wish though he'd listen to those little flutterings he's getting in the back of his mind. He KNOWS what he's doing is wrong, knows that Rey wouldn't like it, BUT he feels justified because it's FOR Rey. He is Rey's protector, her lover, her vengeance. And she will have it, whether she wants it or not. I am curious about those little flutters in his mind, though. Could it be his conscience trying to get through to him? His beloved Rey trying to come back to him?? Curious, curious!!!
Also, the imagery you gave when he ripped through their minds was absolutely brilliant. I always tell you that you have a way with words, and I re-affirm that statement. Your use of imagery without little but direct description is absolutely lovely and envious. I could SEE what he was seeing and FEEL what the characters were feeling. You're such a gifted writer, Perry.
I also think when Rey finally wakes up and realizes what Kylo did while she was out of the game, it will give her a LOT to think about. Like you said before in the previous chapter; Rey HAS compromised her integrity by loving him. She's more than aware Kylo is a few olives short of a whole martini, but her attraction to him and the Bond amplifying those feelings won out. Our girl isn't stupid. She's aware Kylo has done really unforgivable things (e.g. hunting her across the galaxy, killing people, kidnapping her, etc...) but her love for him won out and she's chosen to be with him. I remember a few chapters ago, Kylo asked her if she could forgive him for what he's done and for some, she has. But HAS she really? She knows waaaaaay down deep that she should've turned her back on him, yet here they are. Carrie Fisher once said in an interview that Rey is forgiving, and I do believe that she is. Despite all he's done, Rey clearly saw something in Kylo that was "worthy" in her books to give him the time of day and not just anything physical. I think a lot of her reason may have been because of Leia and her telling stories about Ben. Rey got to listen about the boy Kylo once was and learned, once upon a time, he was actually a pretty nice young man. And that, as well as factoring in her attraction that she tried to deny, could've also played into the times she gave in and would speak to him through the Bond. She wanted to meet that man Kylo used to be, because he's much more pleasant than dealing with the reality that he turned into a kind of dictator of the universe, no? Rey will have a LOT to think about once she wakes up, her little fantasy world is about to burst and she'll have to face up with what she's "blinded" herself to. But she has all that she needs to work through it, I think, to help sort herself out and what it means for her and Kylo, and I think by doing so, it could and can help Kylo with himself, as well.
I really felt for his Knights. I'm sure Wylan could care less, because his Supreme Leader is digging himself into a hole he hopes he won't be able to get out of with Rey. Jashad, Natan and Palek are probably shaking their heads. And then there's Galactic Cool Aunt, Vitok. The poor woman is doing her best to try and reign Kylo in, but she only has so much power. I DO believe that she would've had a bigger impact on Kylo if he was actually reasonable. And if Rey was there to back her up, because again, this plays into what I mentioned in earlier comments. Rey is very much his "conscience", she plays a big part in what he will overall do. But she's not here, and so Vitok is basically powerless in trying to get through to Kylo, though she is doing her best. If he would only just listen to that little voice in that back of his mind that's questioning his actions but is overridden by his need for vengeance!!
You've properly killed my feelings this chapter, Perry. You let us see a side of Kylo that is absolutely brutal, ruthless and uncaring towards the rest of the Universe; I felt awful for the Esharans yet I felt more-so for Galactic Idiot because we know exactly why he's doing it, as unnecessary and completely unorthodox as his methods are. We saw the side of Kylo that was "forgotten" in this story because he was trying to win the affections of his lady love. Kylo Ren is still very much the villain at the moment, but he's not so far gone that he isn't capable of salvaging himself and getting that redemption and happy ending. This Pain Train to Hell is absolutely gut-wrenching and I can't wait to see where it goes once Rey wakes up. Your writing this chapter has reached a new pinnacle of amazing. You had me cry, you made me feel anguish, you made me wanna reach into my screen and slap Kylo silly. Your writing does such marvelous things to my feelings, and I can't wait to read more.
Happy writing!!!

Step Into “What’s Next” With Integrity and Intention
The following is excerpted from my upcoming book, Endeavor. Additional sneak peeks and updates available at EndeavorBook.com.
Before You Begin — Why Are You Here?
Endeavor is a book that shares concepts and a process for finding meaning through work that makes a difference. It seems impossible to me that this can be done without first giving some thoughts to life’s big questions.
Before diving into what an endeavor is, why you need one, and how to find your next one, I’d like you to consider the three questions on the following pages. Write your answers in this book below each question if you like. Or the companion workbook for this title. Or respond in a journal, digital or leatherbound. Or record yourself talking them over with friends and family.
These are questions that human beings have asked for millennia and we’re still answering them. Clearly, there are no absolutely ”right” answers, just “alright” answers for right now.
So, don’t get hung up on this opening exercise and don’t return this book for a refund. At least not yet. Give these questions a try.
Ready? Let’s go.
1. What does it mean to be human?
2. What does it mean to be happy?
3. How can I be more of both?
At this point, you may well be asking yourself yet another question….
“What the Hell Have I Gotten Myself Into?”
At this point you may feel doubtful, anxious, querulous, or just plain confused. If you want to return this book for a refund right now, I don’t blame you. Go ahead.
But, my intent is not to fuel your anger or angst. It’s to inspire your curiosity and engage your courage. I’m hoping that these questions got a little bit under your skin. I’m hoping that they made you you lean in a bit and wonder, “Where is this all heading?”
I’m hoping that together we can look up, reach beyond, and fly higher. That you’ll step into your “what’s next” with greater intention and integrity then you ever have before.
Why I Think You And I Are Here
That’s right, I’m going to answer the same questions I asked you. Not because I have the answers. I most certainly don’t. But I do have some answers and I assert* that, although not definitive, they are good enough to get us started.
At the very least, I hope they’ll inspire you to develop and share your own answers to the three questions: “What does it mean to be human? What does it mean to be happy? And how can I be more of both?”
There are three things we can say about what it means to be human that I think we can all agree on. We are inherently social creatures. We are born with the capacity for reason. And, we all possess a creative impulse.**
*Assertions are a way of sharing big ideas that invite discussion and even disagreement without attachment to outcomes or self-serving agendas. More on assertions later in this book.
**Those of you familiar with my first book, The Stoic Creative, may recognize the first two characteristics are drawn from my appreciation and study of Stoic philosophy.
We Are Inherently Social Creatures
Sure, there are plenty of examples of people leading solitary and self-sustaining lives. But at some point they employ a tool, or idea, or resource that is not their own. We are born to live with and serve others.
Our social instinct comes from an evolutionary imperative. When we first appeared on the scene, we were neither the fastest nor the strongest animal in the food chain. Alone, you’d likely end up as another animal’s lunch, but together we could flip the tables on those that preyed upon us.
Fear and danger drove us to become social creatures. And becoming social creatures made us develop our capacity for reason.
We Are Born With the Capacity for Reason
Yes, I know. It’s easy to point out innumerable examples of our apparent failure to employ our capacity for reason. Human beings do possess other impulses other than rational thinking. Possessing the capacity for reason is one thing. Cultivating it is quite another.
But there’s no denying that our social nature informed our intellect and consciousness. Collaboration and cooperation require communication, and communication requires developing brain power. Becoming social creatures gave us a chance for survival in a hostile world. Developing our capacity for reason gave us a chance to dominate it.
And the combination of our social instinct and capacity for reason informs and inspires our creative impulse.
We All Possess a Creative Impulse
Creativity is simply the act of bringing something forth that did not previously exist. Every time you make a meal, make a mess, or make amends you employ your creative inclination.
Every meaningful undertaking you’ve ever engaged in employs your creative powers. Learning to walk, speak, write, and perform any task draws on your creative abilities.
And we do so by learning from and doing so with others which brings us right back to our social disposition and closes the virtuous cycle of what is required to be human and happy. I
Creativity also informs the path to becoming more of both.
Back to the Question of “Why Are You Here?”
You may have picked this book up because it looked like a book about personal development. What we now call “life design.” Or you might think it’s about career design. Regardless, you likely found it in the Self-Help section of the bookstore, virtual or otherwise, that you bought it from.
But this is not really a self-help book. It’s a help others book.
Because the only way you can truly enhance your life is by enhancing the lives of others.
Yes, that’s an assertion. It can, and should be, investigated, questioned, and argued. But until you can make an overwhelmingly compelling argument to the contrary, I’m sticking to this idea.
Your life is only enhanced when you are engaged in enhancing the lives of others.

EIGHTH GRADE
For his first feature film writer director Bo Burnham owes everything to Elsie Fisher his 14-year-old star who just completed her own eighth grade of middle school when production started. Burnham doesn’t owe A24, the distributor, not composer Anna Meredith, not cinematographer Andrew Wehde, not the editor Jennifer Lilly who has the most film experience here, all key people who can really impact a first time film director. No, he owes all of Eighth Grade to Fisher who allows Burnham to capture every ounce of her physical and mental being not so much in an exploitative way—though you might suspect that is the case since the film is reality based and highly stalking at times —but in a very anthropological way that in a positive sense schools people on what internet life is like at this age. Which is not that much different from everyone else who experienced eighth grade before Facebook, YouTube and Snapchat, in terms of social anxiety. Today it’s just a more penetrating, omnipresence of social concerns.
The Story: Kayla is in her final year of middle school. She’ll be graduating and heading to high school and we get to follow her and watch her as she navigates this delicate time in her life. Eighth Grade is a “day in the life” narrative-based fictional film about Kayla, an only child, who lives with her dad Mark, played by Josh Hamilton (The Meyerowitz Stories (2017), Manchester By The Sea (2016), Frances Ha (2012)), who does his best to stay in touch with his daughter; to allow her to do her thing while also being concerned for her wellbeing; trying to have conversations with her though she just wants to be left alone. And we see her desire to be accepted by the popular girls, while crushing on a boy, Aiden, played by Luke Prael, and in turn, her friend Gabe, played by Jake Ryan, who crushes on her.
The Goods: What Burnham does best is write accidental maturity into these kids. That Aiden the cool, dreamy kid doesn’t even know how magnificent he is to Kayla, though he’s really scrawny and thin, especially as he makes child-like grimaces and accompanying sound effects in class. Yet he’s one of the most popular kids. And that Gabe is a nerd but his seemingly inherent gentlemanly qualities brush off of him like a dog shedding hair. A kid, a child, but one who makes Kayla dinner and shares her concerns about the future.
Eighth Grade is not a John Hughes film, it is not a Disney film with kid actors from Disney Channel shows. It is not innocent comedic Napoleon Dynamite (2004) fun. And it’s not this year’s Lady Bird (2017) as some media outlets are saying. It sort of touches on all of the schematic pieces of these entities, such as capturing the ticks and sounds young people like to make, the natural dialogue of “likes” and “ums,” or the quirky clothing and hairstyles of kids and teachers, done here as well if not better than in Sixteen Candles (1984) or Welcome To The Doll House (1995), or in Richard Linklater’s Dazed And Confused (1993). And the subculture that exists in the hallways, between lockers. But Eighth Grade is dark, the lighting is dark, the music is at times cold and isolating, whether that is all done on purpose or whether it was created this way in post-production based on inexperienced filmmaking…it’s as if we’re on another planet. Which often times we are when trying to recognize and understand kids of this age, or ourselves, when we were in this limbo between childhood and adulthood.
And if you think of the world of Eighth Grade, whether it’s this film, or the actual moment in time—our actual eighth grade—it really is like a level of Dante’s Inferno and Burnham and the crew he works with here have nailed that in every scary, alienated, other worldly way without leaving the reality of the true situation. It’s not a documentary but it documents with accuracy this year in Kayla’s life, just as Michael Apted documented kids from seven years old and up…called the UP series, following the same people from age 7 to age 56, and is still going, and just as the Michael Apted title explains his long term biography project Eighth Grade does the same thing. It’s an anthropological title, a history term paper title, it’s a milestone, a moment, a term used for the eighth year of a child’s education. It can’t get any dryer than that. Like National Geographic, as their motto says, “to increase and diffuse geographic knowledge,” Eighth Grade, as would be fifth grade, or twelfth grade, or say the year in a college freshman’s life on campus, provides us with something more than just a Hollywood top 40 soundtrack movie with adolescent guys having sex with pies.
In that regard, Eighth Grade is more like Fish Tank (2009), written and directed by Andrea Arnold, a fictional slice-of-life look documenting the daily events of 15-year-old Mia who lives with her single mother which won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. And yet not at all like Thirteen (2003), a well-lit professional-looking film shot in a handheld style that involves thirteen-year-old girls in a pattern of self-destruction, and stars Holly Hunter, again, a single parent. To further describe where Eighth Grade fits into the narrative film structure of this genre.
The original music in Eighth Grade, composed mostly of electronic music by Anna Meredith, adds more of a Nicolas Winding Refn (Valhalla Rising (2009), Drive (2011), The Neon Demon (2016)), feel at times. There is definitely a science-fiction underscore to the film. When we consider the effects the internet and social media have on Kayla’s young mind, the way Burnham captures late night screen time with Kayla, in bed, always with her purple earbud headphones on, sort of hiding from dad, and the world, in the darkness of her room with the single light of her cell phone…it’s no different than any other cold, electronic, robotic, A.I. image in any science fiction film dealing with lonely astronauts.
Or like in the films of Refn where the central characters are often loners where the camera follows them and stays with them all day allowing us—with electronic music—to crawl under their skin like nano bots and go along for what is usually a dramatically creepy ride.
The music proliferates the fantasies and fears of the young person experience, more so than music from a Hughes film, but not dissimilar to Sophia Coppola who does this quite well in nearly all of her films, using musicians like electronic synth-heavy bands and artists like Squarepusher, Air, Klaus Schulze, Oneohtrix Point Never and the more accessible Avicii, or deadmau5.
Even bigger, wide reaching films have an original electronic score most of which lends itself well to suspenseful or psychological moments, in recent films like Game Night (2018), score by Cliff Martinez, and Phantom Thread (2017), soundtrack by Radiohead guitarist Johnny Greenwood. Greenwood was nominated for an Oscar in the Original Score category for that film and recently scored Lynne Ramsey’s You Were Never Really Here (2018), which, starring Joaquin Phoenix, is much more common in tonality, music wise, electronically, to contemporary films like Drive, and Tron: Legacy (2010), and curiously Burnham’s Eighth Grade. Both films in fact—You Were Never Really Here and Eighth Grade—have tracks that are siren-like in their attempt to interpret scenes where sirens might be required for both a) the characters in the film, as sort of red flags, and b) for the audience in enhancing the “alarm” of character distress.
This kind of music is nothing new. Hans Zimmer of Inception (2010), Interstellar (2014), The Dark Knight Rises (2012), uses nearly all synthesizers and electronics; as does Steven Jablonsky, composer of the Transformer films. That same highly affective synthetic sound logic is found in the X-Files TV show and films, Scarface (1983), The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (2011), the Blade Runner films, Hackers (1995), big film and TV stuff. But indie films too have a pedigree of electronic music as part of their original soundtrack. John Carpenter, the sci-fi and fantasy indie film king, composes a lot of electronic music for his films, the most noticeable and recognizable being the theme from his Halloween films, but also Escape from New York (1981), The Thing (1982), They Live (1988), Ghosts of Mars (2001), etc. And a near wordless action nail-biter like Terminator (1984) relies heavily on electronic music that drives the tension and suspense of that film like few others.
The point of all of this is two things: a) the electronic music you hear in Eighth Grade works against the character, is a cold partner to the artificiality and falseness of social media, and creates a subtext of “alien presence” in the sense the soundtrack synthesizer is the voice of a world outside of reality, at best symbolizing the world of overbearing self-consciousness young people exist in at this age, and b) if that is so, then the upside is that Kayla’s character beats this sound around her, rises above it and conquers this monster-alien’s monolith alarm warfare in times of greatest challenges within the film.
Even when we hear a contemporary song, like one from Selena Gomez or Katy Perry, it is not the party anthem of good times, one that appears on a soundtrack you can download on iTunes or buy at Walmart, but instead is often muffled in the film by kids conversing or by earbuds and quickly replaced by Meredith’s electronic composition which we surely come to recognize as representative of Kayla’s true psyche. And that music, it’s almost like the black alien goo from the Spider-Man comics which eventually takes over the bearer’s body and goes on to become Venom, taking over the mainstream pop music of  Eighth Grade.
But Kayla rises above all that, and that is the film’s most successful aspect. It gives this character’s story a positive punch in the end.
The Flaws: My problem is it’s all just a little too dark, that the film goes to the dark side of eighth grade angst and isolation more than I’d like it to. Which makes the film stand out, I recognize that, and for which it also makes the film better than most in this category. I find the music a little too invasive, but that’s the point too…that all of this social media stigmata and middle school distress is overbearing. And the music gives the film a signature that neither Kayla nor the audience can shake. Is that what reality is like? Are we affected by technology and people around us, our place in society, to such a degree it gives us a mark of disgrace, of shame, and an aura of neurosis? I don’t think so. In reality. At least not permanently. But yes, in the movie, the electronic compositions are so strong they put a UPC code-like stamp on our Kayla that leaves us very little hope for a positive future. In that regard Eighth Grade feels more like a monster movie than a young adult drama.
Comedy is what we need a little more of here, if we wish to retain the sense of realism Burnham has done so well with here. If we could laugh at ourselves a bit more in Eighth Grade, laugh with Kayla, watch Kayla laugh a little at herself and some of her circumstances, not in a Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982) way, or in a Clueless (1995), Amy Heckerling way, or in a Mean Girls (2004) way—but in a Matt Damon laughing at Robin Williams way in Good Will Hunting (1997), or in a Tom Berenger trying a stunt jump in The Big Chill (1983) way, or in a Rachel Getting Married (2008) wedding craziness relief like family toasts way…if we have these comedic personality traits in Eighth Grade, the comedy of life’s weirdest moments would seem more real than it does here in what we only see as a series of reactions that for Kayla express disappointment and embarrassment.
That realistic lighting and those humiliating parents and that awkward bathing suit at the swim party, that the prospect of a relationship with someone we have a crush on, those “realities” aren’t real enough in the end without the ability to laugh at something, anything, which is what kids do with their friends—seeking comfort from the madness of this time in our life.  True, that doesn’t always happen. Some kids don’t get that outlet, the outlet of life-like friends, or sports, or after school programs…or that opportunity to vent while just hanging out with friends after school watching TV and laughing at body noises and funky odors. In the film Eighth Grade, we get a glimpse of that and see that Kayla does in fact have those options, yet we only really see her drop her guard, loosen up, on one or two occasions which are far outweighed by the more humiliating, self-conscious, constricting horrors in her head.
Working with limited budgets, cast, equipment, you’re talking a school full of kids, a community, a shopping mall, a high school where the eighth graders shadow high school students…sure, there are a lot of successful quantities here. And in that regard Burnham has made a great film. Correction, Elsie Fisher has made a great film, as laden as it is with oppressive dark matter of the universe.
The Call: Spend the ten. Eighth Grade is shy of being a master piece but it’s a fantastic dramatic debut for Burnham who by trade is a comedian. His previous directing work is with TV and cable comedy stand-up specials with the likes of Chris Rock, Jerod Carmichael and himself even though there’s rarely any comedy in this film. The original electronic music by Anna Meredith is at times mostly highhanded and sometimes terrorizing; the film could use a few more real-life comedic moments to punchline Kayla’s most difficult moments. But Elsie Fisher offers herself up for the cameras like a pro. Meryl Streep has nothing on her. It’s more than acting though. She’s sacrificing herself for the good of the film. Burnham has a lot to be thankful for. And so do we. Gucci!
Eighth Grade is still on the festival circuit and will receive a rating closer to release date. Running time is 1 hour and 34 minutes.

List of Sherlolly Prompts as of 3/1/2017
Here is a link to the very informal Sherlolly Prompt Fest FAQ
Below is the list of prompts submitted to @holidaysat221b.  Where possible, we have tagged the submitter so that credit can be given if a prompt inspires someone to write a fic or create a piece of art.
Some submissions were specifically labeled as Art prompts, and they have been separated into their own category.  However, if you are a fic writer and one of the art prompts calls to you, go for it.  Likewise, if one of the other prompts makes you want to draw, have fun with it!
On to the Prompts as of March 1, 2017
Art
Art prompt:  (I’ve wanted this like burning for five years, I’ll never give up asking)  Sherlock and Molly, the cake scene from “Sixteen Candles”.
Song fic/Inspired by lyrics
Song Fic:  Adele’s “Water Under the Bridge”  -  @darnedchild
Song Fic:  … I would love something based on “Samson” by Regina Spektor please.  -  @chelle812
Song Fic:  Katy Perry’s “Unconditionally”  -  @darnedchild
Song Fic:  Texas’ “I’ll See It Through”  -  @darnedchild
The catch:  Molly’s been a beloved peer, so it’s him who gets the obligatory “you hurt her, we’ll end you”.
-  @mel-loves-all
Whenever Molly is close, Sherlock unconsciously always seems to need to touch her in some way after they start dating.
Because I feel Sherlock would not muck about, with telling Molly what he would like to do to her, he would not use cute little names, for all her female parts and would go into great detail, like all his cases.
-  @penaltywaltz
Non-established Sherlolly.  Sherlock gets a hold of Molly’s phone one afternoon and can’t resist snooping.  He’s surprised to see a folder in her photo gallery marked “Special” and it’s all photos of him.  -  @penaltywaltz

List of Sherlolly Prompts as of 3/15/2017
Here is a link to the very informal Sherlolly Prompt Fest FAQ
On to the Prompts as of March 15, 2017
Sherlock and Lady Molly of Scotland Yard.
A Hades and Persephone AU with Molly as female Hades (the unrequited love at first, the proximity with death) and Sherlock as a male Persephone (the curiosity, the lack of eating).  Irene would be a great Poseidon (the chaos provided by the ocean, the sailor knots).  As for John, he would be a great Hermes!  -  Kay
NEW – Gimme “The Full Monty”, baby. Surely someone can find a reason to have Sherlock, John, and Greg get their kits off? Or Molly, Mary, and Sally? Mrs H could give professional pointers and tips to whomever you’re planning to get starkers.  -  Anonymous
NEW – A Sherlolly version of “It’s A Wonderful Life”. Sherlock gets to see what his loved ones’ lives would be like if he never existed, realizing the positive impact he had on them when he was alive.  -   @simplyshelbs16xoxo
Song fic/Inspired by lyrics
Song Fic:  Adele’s “Water Under the Bridge”  -  @darnedchild  *
Song Fic:  … I would love something based on “Samson” by Regina Spektor please.  -  @chelle812
Song Fic:  Katy Perry’s “Unconditionally”  -  @darnedchild
Song Fic:  Texas’ “I’ll See It Through”  -  @darnedchild
Song Fic:  … I’ve got a quote from a song.  “You only know you love her when you let her go.”  (Note from Mod - The song appears to be Passenger’s “Let Her Go”)  -  @flowerstar5

Have you had sex?
Complete me as a person.
A post TRF fic, where Sherlock takes Molly with him, but they return to London a couple years later than in canon because Molly got pregnant along the way (or even twice), so now they are three/four of them instead of two?  -  @mychakk
Victorian “Hooper”lock—Molly in disguise as “Hooper” the man, and they work together on a case and sparks fly.  They flirt and all, and Sherlock can’t figure out right away that she’s a woman, and I think it might not even bother him that much.  -  @lullikiish
“We had chips. -  @mychakk

“Thwarted” Chapter 44 Review
@perrydowning in which you surprise me and I try to rush home to comment after reading chapter 44 in the grocery store line
SURPRISE UPDATE ON ME, DO YOU. Sneaky sneaky. I was out doing early errands since I’m off today and while in line at the grocery store, you message me that you update?! Luckily the line was long so I read in line but that proved to be a mistake because I just can’t read AND NOT COMMENT because my phone sucks and ao3 still sucks major eggs. And we’re finally here. The Pain Train has descended upon us like I predicted. Well. Not YET. We have a bit of fluff and light angst and smut in between before it fully arrives, BUT IT IS HERE.
I really REALLY love when my precious space babies talk about important stuff and their fears and insecurities. It gives me life and clears my skin. I love how Kylo speaks more about the things that Rey says, about how they do cut him deeply and hurt him but he takes it in stride because he feels it is justified. And in a way it is. BUT if they’re in a relationship (because now they are) and she keeps bringing it up, even in anger and she doesn’t mean it, it isn’t okay and doesn’t really help grow their relationship, I think. But we also must remember and not forget the circumstances in which Rey was brought to him. He kidnapped her when she told him to leave her alone. And she witnessed him kill Han, his own and the man who showed her kindness in the short amount of time they knew each other. BUT Rey has also clarified that she didn’t really hate Kylo; she was finding reasons to hate him because she felt guilty about her growing attraction to him, even when she knew he was the Resistance and galaxy’s number one enemy and she felt like she a traitor because she’s now with Kylo and the First Order but she really isn’t and she’s a jumbled mess emotionally. So while I understand when Rey lashes out at Kylo when the Resistance or Leia are mentioned, I also feel like Rey should work on not taking her anger out on Kylo, even when I do see it as justified but not if she wants a permanent, established relationship. She can forgive him and not forget what he’s done but she doesn’t have to bring it up all the time. BUT I also think our space babies haven’t reached that point yet because the real angst and issues (Kylo really not coming to terms with the things he’s done/will do, he couldn’t and wouldn’t let her go if she asked, his own personal morals within himself and as Supreme Leader, to name a few) that haven’t been addressed haven’t been tackled yet, but surely will in the upcoming chapters. I’m rambling again xD
I also found Rey’s reasoning for not wanting a baby interesting. She did clarify that she didn’t NOT want a baby with Kylo in the future, and a reason was because of what happened with Han. But I also think it may have to do with her mother and how she abandoned her. She may feel this fear – like she did earlier in the story about being a “whore” for accepting Kylo’s gifts – that she’s like her mom and wouldn’t be a good mom, though we know that wouldn’t be the case. I think she’d make an amazing mother and would love any children she had. But that’s me. X3
On lemony news, a lemon!! And though it was the tiniest bit angsty, again, love how they talked it through. Kylo was willing to be open minded about taking Rey sexually how she wanted, but we still see that it unnerves him and reminds him of the past. I give major props to Rey, though, for being understanding when he stops and can’t continue. She doesn’t pressure him and assures him he’s done nothing wrong. I do like that, though Kylo feels like he didn’t “save himself” for Rey, Rey tells him that in a way he did. He did, actually. He didn’t give himself emotionally or even all the way physically to any other woman. There was no emotional attachment to women he’d slept with before Rey. It was just a means to an end. But with Rey, it’s clearly special both emotionally and physically and he only wants her and she only wants him. I’m really glad they talked this though and I love my space babies so much KEEP CHATTING. <3
And the Kylo Ren Pain Train has officially pulled into the station! Everyone have your tickets ready. The train to Hell isn’t a pleasant one and will definitely be a long ride, I bet. What has happened to Rey?! AND WHY MUST IT END IN A CLIFFHANGER? .... I mean, I KNOW what happens cuz a space cupcake told me ;) BUT TO BE HERE AT LAST IS NERVE-WRECKING. Oh my heart isn’t prepared. Even when given weeks to prepare. I CANNOT CONTAIN MY SUSPENSE. I’m very much excited to see how Kylo will handle whatever has happened to Rey and the upcoming chapters will definitely remind us that, even though Rey has “calmed” him, what it spells out for the galaxy when his leash isn’t being held. SO EXCITED!!!
Now, miscellaneous comments:
Awe!! Vitok and Kes wanna take Rey on a girls outing. Yes, all of the     Vitok/Rey/Kes friendship adventures!! #TeamSWWomen
Vitok and Rey training is everything. Vitok is a great teacher, and Rey is a willing and humble student. Absolutely love. Galactic Cool Aunt is the best!
Rey’s deadbeat momma has been found!! What angst awaits us in the horizon? Will Rey find closure? Will they make amends? Will Rey’s momma accept her? Or continue to be a deadbeat and refuse to have anything to do with her?! The suspense kills meeee
Hux, now ISN’T the time for your snide remarks. Don’t you know when it concerns Rey, all logical thinking for Kylo (not that he had much of it) goes right out the window? He clearly had a death wish, but I don’t doubt he’s a fast learner and he definitely learned not to make that mistake again in the future! Though I’m sure Vitok won’t be pleased if he told her
I absolutely love Preslan. And the fact that Kylo is threatened by a cat.     Not that a cat could ever one up him, but the fact that he gets jealous of any of Rey’s precious attention getting directed at a walking ball of hair that seems to have an agenda against him. Galactic Crookshanks does not like Galactic Idiot and makes it a point to show him. Of course he’d get right in between Kylo and Rey whilst they were sleeping so he can be all “Oh? What’s that? I can’t sleep in the bed with you? Well, here then lemme just get in RIGHT IN BETWEEN. And don’t think about having sex. You have the sex drive of an adolescent and I can sense it a mile away and before anything happens I MAY JUST want a cuddle then.” I also love how Kylo refers to him as a beast and a furry monstrosity. I’m sure Preslan has a few names for him as well, if he could talk. Like moron or giant.
You will actually kill me next chapter, Perry. Or within the next few chapters. KILL MY FEELINGS, WHY DON’T YOU. I loved the tone of this chapter. It went from light angst to fluff to amusement to KILL ME WITH A CLIFFHANGER. I can’t wait for chapter 45 and now I must wait but I know the wait will be worth it. You always give us your best, Perry, and your best always leaves me wanting more!! You’re truly a remarkable writer.
See you in Chapter 45 when we go descend into Hell together!!
Happy writing!!
 xx
