A somewhat Sherlock Holmes themed chimpanzee detective teaming up with a Sam Spade themed gorilla detective. Goddamn it, I love comic books

Angel and the Ape definitely takes dominant female comics characters into surreal territory. Commencing appropriately enough in the self-consciously zany comics world of 1968, and published by DC Comics, the title introduced Angel O’Dare as a city private detective whose partner is (of course) a talking gorilla and comic book artist called Sam Grudd. Rather than drifting into light weight Archie or Scooby Doo comedy territory, the title became something of a cult hit and received two reboots in the 1980s and 1990s that doubled down on the title’s silliness, including Angel working with the super heroine and her half-sister Dumb Bunny, a member of the jokey outfit the Inferior Five. A third, far more serious, if still unconventional, take came out in the early 2000s. This version provided an explanation for Sam’s gorilla experience and why other characters found it unremarkable. Angel’s persona was also became far more hard boiled and believable, with the somewhat airhead persona of her previous incarnations dropped.
The page above is from the later series. Angel And The Ape Volume 3, #3, 36DD for Death, is part of a four issue story published in 2001/ 2002 in which Angel and Sam are trying to solve the murder of the suitably ironically named Bambi Dextrous. A short skirted and black stockinged Angel captures the duo’s main suspect, who seems suspiciously co-operative, even offering the detective use of his own handcuffs in order to restrain him. Even in darker mode, the title cannot bring itself to be entirely serious.
Angel and the Ape was originally created by E Nelson Bridwell and Bob Oksner. The 2001 version was written by Howard Chaykin and David Tischman and illustrated by Philip Bond.
