Damn it, I was hoping the surprise wouldn't have been spoiled for you. Oh well, at least you'll enjoy the journey. Also, since you know about Catradora being canon, what are your personal thoughts about it, being the die-hard shipper you are?

((Just a question are you someone I know?)) Anyways, I’ll tell you the truth. At first, I didn’t believe it. I saw the kissing gif, I saw the picture of them laying in that field together with Bow and Glimmer, I saw things of the future where they were obviously a couple, and I sighed. I thought they were edited.

As I came to realize they were NOT fake, I started screaming and crying right away. I don’t know when the exact moment hit me. Probably when I noticed that EVERYONE was posting these, not just editors, and that they were both in the style that SheRa was animated in as well as “clean” (no fuzzy edges, cut-off things, etc).

Then I went to “sleep,” aka laying in the dark smiling at my bedroom wall until 2AM when I happy cried to sleep.

When I woke up, I was in full swing happy. It’s actually amazing because I see a lot of my girlfriend and myself in the way Catradora interact, and as we’ve had some difficulties with *our* SW (my mom) and quarantine, and it made me feel 1000% better about everything (I love herrrr).

TL;DR, I’m such a mix of happy and ecited and energetic that I don’t even KNOW what to think anymore! As I said to a friend of mine, “There are no emotions, only Catradora.”

From the land

Today I am leaving the ocean and heading to the land. The Big Island is even more biodiverse than Maui. It contains 11 of the 14 climate zones in the world. They even have snow on their tallest peak, Mauna Kea. Today I am heading south og Kona to explore a Chocolate Farm, a coffee farm and a bee apiary!

Chocolate Farm

The Original Hawaiian Chocolate factory is the only chocolate producer in an industrialized country that processes the chocolate from the plant all the way to the final product. Most chocolate producers start with the dried cocoa bean. The beautiful estate grows cacao (the pod that chocolate is made from), macadamia nuts and coffee. The entire operation is run by only eight staff, including the owner (Bob) and his wife. (American Ex-pats)

Above are the tree that the cacao pods grow on. They are about the size of a large eggplant when fully ripe. Iniside these pods there is a fibrous membrane (like in a squash) that contains seeds. These seeds have to be fermented and dried to give them the chocolate flavor. This produces chocolate nibs which are ground to make cocoa powder, which becomes chocolate. (More or less, you can google it if you want to fact check me on this one.)

Cacao pods growing in the trees. This variety will will turn a bright yellow when they are ripe.

Ripe cacao pods. They grow in a variety of colors. For example green pods turn yellow when ripe, maroon pods turn candy apple red when ripe. Other colors include purple, orange and rainbow!

These are the seeds (or cocoa beans) inside of the pod. They are covered with a bitter coating that will help ferment the seeds.

After they have fermented, they are cleaned off and left outside to dry on these racks.

Cocoa beans on the drying rack. These will be ground to make the cocoa powder used to make chocolate! This chocolate farm only makes milk and dark chocolate.

Fun fact: White chocolate is not actually made from the solid bean, it is made from cocoa butter, which is extracted from the bean. Since there are no cocoa butter extractors on the island, they are limited to milk and dark chocolate only.

It was really interesting to see this done as a small operation, given the extremely unjust conditions that many cacao growers face in developing countries. At least one aspect of eating chocolate was guilt-free today! m On to cofee next!

Coffee Farm

There is a oot of coffee grown in Hawaii so I had lots of options for a coffee tour. No one will be surprised to hear that I chose the Kona Historic Socity’s Living History coffee farm!! YEA! The nerdiest of an already nerd activity!

So...the Kona Historical Society has preserved one of the early coffee farms on the island that was run by a Japanese family. It was purchased by the Ushida family in 1913. The Ushida’s had immigrated from Japans and decided to take up farming. However, they had no experience farming coffee when they bought the coffee farm in 1913. The spent the next few years learning from local farmers how to grow it. This was the beginning of what we know know as the Kona coffee industry, which was led mostly by Japanese immigrants. The Ushida’s were one of the first Japanese families to do it and encouraged and inspired many other to take up the trade throughout the 20th century.

Fun fact: In the 1940s 50% of people living in Hawaii were Japanese.

The Ushida’s tore down the small farmhouse that was on the property when they purchased it and built a traditional Japanese home. The Ushida’s had 5 children, who all shared a three room house (a iving area, bedroom and kitchen).

To be totally honest, I had absolutely no idea how coffee grew. I knew it came from beans, but that was about it. Well...it grows on trees. Coffee trees can live and produce coffee for hundreds of years, in fact. Coffee beans actually form inside of these cmall round berries. (They sort of look like cranberries.) They are green when unripe and turn a bright red color when ripe. Inside each berry is a small amount of flesh (similar to grapes) and in the center is a coffee bean. In order to make coffee, the berries have to be picked, the skin and flesh need to be removed, the beans need to be dried and then they can be roasted. Coffee beans are harvested 4 months out the year from September - December.

Coffe tree. The base of this tree is over 100 years old. The branches are trimmed every few years, but the base and root systems can remain for hundreds of years.

Coffee berries. These are small because the are yound. They are about cranberry sized. The will grow to be closer to grape size when it is time to harvest next September.

The Ushida’s also grew other plants for subsistence farming and to sell at local markets. Although the weather in Hawaii is perfect for growing almost anything, it can sometime be difficult to farm because of the lava rock that covers most of the land. Plants that do very well in Hawaii have extremely strong root systems that can actually break through the rock or grow within cracks a crevasses in the rock. (Like coffee, cacao and pineapple).

It’s a baby pineapple! It’s one of the only plants, where if you plant any part of the pineapple it is capable of growing a new one.

This may look like a cucumber, but it is actually a plant that grows bath loofahs. Yep, for real.

See!?! I didn’t make this up.

During the 4 month harvesting season, the Ushida men would wake up at 2:30 to start harvesting and finish after sunset. The women would wake up at 4:30am. The entire family, including small chilren, would harvest the beans. The most difficult part of the process was removing the skin and flesh from the beans. It is only since WWII that most farmers had a mechanized process to do it. For centuries it was done by stomping on them with your feet. Like grapes.

Once the beans are removed from the berries, they need to be dried, which can take up to 10 days. The Ushida’s would leave them out in the sun to dry and bring them into the shed when it rained and at night. At any given time there would be over 1000 pounds of beans drying. (On average, an adult could pick 150 lbs. a day). In the 1940 the Ushida’s developed a brillant idea to create a drying platform on the top of the barn/shed that had a sliding roof, so that they could cover the beans at night or during rain and not have to carry the beans in. Genius. This is the original roof and the sliding mechanism still works perfectly!

Kona coffee is still an institution in Hawaii. Descendants of the Ushida family lived in the original house until 1994. (They never modernized the house, it still had a wood burning stove and outhouse/outdoor bath house) The historical society bought it and preserved it. It is still a working farm today.

Lunch

L&L Barbeque is Hawaiian fast food institution. I stopped here for lunch and was not disappointed. Many of the things on the menu reflect the Asian and Japanese heritage of the island. I ordered the chicken lovers platter, BBQ chicken, Chicken katsu and...something else delicious.

Bees

My last stop for the day was Big Island Bees. A bee apiary.

I have always been obsessed with bees (and colony animals in general, like ants) so I was SO EXCITED about this. I have probably told many of you this, but the U of M refused to let me volunteer at their bee lab and I am still really bitter about it.

Kim, the master Bee keeper, gave us free samples and showed us the hives. They have several sites across the island that produce different kinds of honey. There are two ways to get flavored honey. One is to infuse a flavor into already created honey, like pepper or cinnamon. The other is to place the hives in a area where they have access to only one or prodominantly one kind of flower. Their bees make three kinds of honey. One from Macadamia Nut trees, one from the Wilelaiki blossom on theChristmasberry tree (introduced in Hawaii from Brazil) and the rareist type, the Lahua blossom honey, which comes from the Ohi’a trees. Ohi’a trees are found only on Hawaii and grow out of lava rock. The honey is naturally white. (Apparently you can buy Big Island Honey at costco!)

So I learned a lot of cool stuff about bees. I could write for hours about it, but I’m just going to give you my favorite fun facts. If you want to know more, let’s hang out!

Fun fact 1: Queens can live for 1-5 years, where as the rest of the bees in the hive only live 4-8 weeks.

Fun fact2: All of the worker bees in the hive are female. The only male bees in the hive are called Drones. Their only job is to mate with the Queen, so when the food is scarce or the hive is in trouble, the female workers bees evict the Drones by biting off their wings, pushing them out of the hive and leaving them on the ground to die. Sorry fellas, they don’t have time for freeloaders! I love bees!

Fun fact 3:The worker bees go through four different jobs in their short lives 1) Take care and feed of the baby bees, which hatch in the cells in the hive, feed and take care of the queen, protect the hive, and forage for pollen.

Fun fact 4: Bees are super ruthless, if the queen is not doing so hot, the hive releases special pharamones (sp?) so that the queen will give birth to her own replacement and then they will kill the queen once she’s born. Total mutiny.

Not so fun fact 5: Bees are in trouble because of a small hive mite that has starting taking over the hives, laying eggs in the cells and eventually forcing the bees out of the hive. Hives have to be checked and treated regularly to keep from being infested by these small invasive beetles from Asia. Boo!

One hive. It contains both the cells for honey and for making baby bees. This hive has no drones, because it is a slow honey producer, so they opted to kill all of the drones until they have more honey.

Lastly, bees can make art. Their so cool and talented. I am ecited because my goal for this spring and summer is to plant a pollinator friendly yard. I applied for a grant to do, I will know shortly if I got it. My eventual goal would be to have a hive in my yard, but it is really hard to overwinter bees in Minnesota, so I might have to work up to this. Future goals...

writer’s block sucks ass

so lately I’ve been dealing with the worst case of writer’s block that I’ve ever had lmao. I tried to alleviate the situation by just not forcing it and kind of just avoiding writing for a while but nothing has come to the surface. So, I have decided that the way through my writer’s block is to take a step back from the one-shot stuff and do some writing for my favourite topic.

CHARACTER ANALYSATION & SHIP ANALYSATION

I will probably start off by analysing some of the characters and their relationhsips from Danganronpa. I will be taking requests from that fandom and others as well. Feel free to request a character to analyse, an anime, a movie or a platonic/romantic relationship. I’m really ecited for this and I hope y’all will be too!!

Week 2 home study [Researching some games and shows]

Gris:

Gris is a water painted designed game that has a rly beutiful asethic setting that makes you want to just sit there and look at the game and apriaciate the game.

At times the game is very meditive and peacful with just a well designed simple background and other times we can be overwellmed witht he detail and the art on screen.

The animations are clean and peacful to look at as this game isnt supposed to be excessive with explosions etc.

The character is a fairly simple desgin of a women in a dress that gets blowm about in the wind when you move but we dont rly get to see close up to our character as the game is quite zoomed out.

Hollow Knight:

The art style in this game si a dark and gloomy setting with provides a spooky atmoshphere and creates that intesne gameplay.

the game is full of detail and as we are mostly near caves etc we see alot of things like tressure chests, rocks, crystals and things like statues.

the animations are ecplosive and eciting to experience as you see orange expleosions when you fight, you can dash throught the wind, and crystals can shatere every when crytals are destroyed. There are all types of white curved flashs and white wings that pop up that signify that you have hit something that gives extra satisfaction.

The character design is simple and looks like a old fashioned cartoon chacter or something from cup head due to the characters skull with big black eyes and a small body.

scott pilgrim vs the worl:

Scott pilgrim is set in an old school with a very retro design that is a consistant burst of colour in your face that keeps this game looking fresh and enjoyable.

Scott pilgrim is set in an old school side scroller that has tons of detail that flash in your face and can't even comprehend everthing that happens, i think that this game does go a bit overboard with the amount of things that happen a once though so that could be toned down abit so the player can keep up with everything that is happening.

The animations are mini explosions of oragne and red after you punch someone and the enemy flings back, fly's in the air and they fall over which gives you the satisifaction when you're in fights.

the character design is a sinple boy in a green shirt and brown trousers with and a old school retro style detail. this design fits into the game very smoothly.

Adventure time:

Adventure time's art style is something that changed the game for TV shows with its unique settings of cake castles, massive tree houses and ice castles.

Adventure time for the most likes to keep its scenes full of colour and entertaining to look at as jake and Fin are supposed to go on these crazt adventures so the show is normally always set in a well desgined funky setting.

The animations are amazing and hilarious in this show as we see characters like Jake who streches his arms out really tall or expand his body to make him ten times the size he was. And we see cool fight scenes with Fin and his sword skills.

The characters are simple designs very well thought characteristics as we see people like princess bubble gum who is made out of gum and Jake who is a yellow dog.

regular show:

regular shows art style is very unique with the wacky characters, the events that display are always crazy which is why the art style can become very creative and colourful.

The majority of the time in the show it is very plain and the show is mostly the characters that are talking but sometimes events will happen when people come out from the tv and smash up the house.

the animation is normally quite hyperactive and fast past becuase we see people do alot of crazy stunts in regular show.

The character designs are mostly quite simple like mordicei is a blue jay and rigby is a racoon.

Best Romantic Match: Ruki. Ruki would be the best match for you because out of all the others, I think he would respond to someone who is highly sensitive and has history of emotional abuse the best. Although his actions at first may be rough and degrading, as he gets to know you as a person better, he’ll come to be more soft and gentle with you. Although your zodiac signs aren’t super compatible since Ruki is more conventional and you’re more unconventional, you both share a great, steady drive to succeed. He may be too possesive of you, but you wouldn’t mind this since you accept Ruki for who he is. Ruki isn’t bothered by your introversion because he is the same way. He enjoys having alone time with you where you guys can be away from others in order to recuperate and withdraw. Ruki is entertained by your attempts at dancing and enjoys watching thi sthoroughly. One of you guys’ favorite things to do together on a lazy sunday afternoon is play puzzle games and brain teasers. Later on, you relax in bed together reading in a comfortable silence.

One thing that bothers him is when you’re teacher makes you present things in class. He thinks things like “how could they make you do something you’re uncomfortable with, no one is allowed to talk to my girlfriend like that.” He’ll even go up to the teacher and get in argument about it. Same with the situation at the doctors with shots. He can be embarrassingly overprotective of you because you are precious to him. Ruki makes sure to hold your hand whenever you are in a crowd because he doesn’t want you to be afraid. (Oh and he finds your snorting laugh to be weird and cute at the same time(Kou makes fun of you and then Ruki beats his ass to the moon and back)).

Best Friend Match: Kou. Kou isn’t nearly as understanding about your sensitivity because he has no filter or tact when it comes to handling sensitive topics, but he ends up befriending you faster than anyone else anyways. During the first few months of knowing you it was a bumpy ride because of just that, but he came to value your feelings when he got to know you as a person. Kou also helps you to come out of your shell more because every time you try to cover up how you’re feeling, he immediately knows if you’re lying. When he sees you depressed, he tries to help you through it in his own way (which may’ve been too brutal). He ends up apologizing and taking you somewhere nice to show how he’s sorry. He jokes around with you a lot and enjoys playing video games, going to animal shelters, seeing some good action/drama movies or shows, or just goofing off on the internet. He comes to understand that you’re no social butterfly and don’t care for crowds so he doesn’t put you in situations like that or around let you around his fans.

Kou brings out you’re playful, easily-ecited side and both of you will go back and forth over nonsensical arguments like children. Being around you makes him feel like the kid he never got to be (as it is for you being around him). You end up having having some heavy heart-to-hearts with Kou and find that you both share some of the same pains. This strengthens your friendship and he’s there for you when you have your panic attacks. Kou finds your taste in music good, but constantly badgers you to listen to his music instead. He goes so far as to put on personal shows just for you (much to Ruki’s displeasure). Kou will go swimming with you, share your interest in photography though much of the pictures are of him, take you out to candy stores or concerts, and happily look up at stars with you and ramble about constellations, etc. Kou’s favorite thing to do is have you make him vongole bianco 24/7. That is when Ruki interferes and pitches a fit at Kou for making his girlfriend slave away in the kitchen for him.

Other than that, Kou shares your interest in yoga and likes to enjoys giving you plenty of relationship advice. The two of you are very compatible in astrology since you’re both Aquarius and can chat ceaselessly about this and that. Kou gives you a makeover for dates with Ruki and has a lot of fun playing with all of your curly hair.
