Antiques Market-  Mercatino d’Antiquariato

In The Commonwealth, it’s known as Boxing Day. In The US it’s simply the day after Christmas and in Italy it’s Il Giorno di Santo Stefano or Saint Stephen’s day. It is, officially a public holiday which means businesses are mostly closed and markets are mostly open! In the nearby town of Gonzaga, there is a huge antique market. It draws dealers from all over the region and spans nearly the whole small town with over 400 vendors.

Our friends Gio & Raffaella own a used bookstore and so were going to the market to see what they could find, they asked if we wanted to come along. We love markets!

The sprawling market has booths all up and down the streets and in the main squares. They range in just about everything from old junk to true antiques. Each dealer has their own patch of road where they lay out their wares.

Although we weren’t in the market for anything it was still a lot of fun to wander around and see all the antiques. There was such a wide variety of things! There were several book/ record stalls,  WWII memorabilia and glassware

Alex was enamored with this pair of guard dogs

And we even found a really well-made cabinet situation

Posters, pictures, plates, busts….it’s really hard to describe what you find at this market.

Or something totally random….like this crocodile

Even our Italian friends didn’t know what this machine used to be!

Whatever you find at this market I can at least guarantee it’s old, it is sometimes beautiful and it’s always random.

However, if you have a few hours- it’s really delightful to see everything in the setting of this quaint Italian town. We arrived just at 12.30 which is perfect timing because most people are at lunch. It wasn’t too crowded and it was easy to move around and see all the things. 

The day was bright, the stuff was fascinating and overall I can highly recommend spending your 26th of December walking off all the Christmas meals in the town of Gonzaga.
