UNIT PROFILE– 761ST TANK BATTALION (COLORED) BLACK HISTORY MONTH Of the three armor battalions composed of Black soldiers in the segregated U.S. Army of World War II, the 761st "Black Panther" Tank Battalion is arguably the best known. Constituted on 15 March 1942 in the Army of the United States and activated on 1 April 1942 at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana, it was initially equipped with the M5 Stuart tank but transitioned to the M4 Sherman when the Army began fielding that system to the non-divisional armor units. After the battalion completed training in the United States - which included serving as the "aggressor" force against the student units of the tank destroyer school and participation in a phase of the Louisiana Maneuvers, the 761st was deemed "combat ready" and shipped overseas to the European Theater of Operations. Following a short stay in England, the battalion arrived in France on 10 October 1944, and was assigned to the Third Army commanded by the legendary proponent of armored warfare, Lieutenant General George S. Patton Jr. As a separate tank battalion, the 761st was attached to Infantry divisions - which had no organic armor units - for combat operations. As such, the "Black Panthers" entered combat for the first time on 7 November 1944. In 183 days of combat operations while attached to the all-white 26th, 71st, 79th, 87th, 95th and 103d Infantry Divisions, the 761st participated in the Allied drive through France, Patton’s relief of Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge, and the breaching of the Siegfried Line. By the end of the war the Black Panthers had made it all the way to Austria (where they liberated the Gunskirchen concentration camp); the 761st was inactivated on 1 June 1946 in Germany. During WWII, the Black Panthers earned a Medal of Honor, a Presidential Unit Citation, 11 Silver Stars, 69 Bronze Stars, 296 Purple Hearts, and four campaign streamers (Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, Central Europe). #Armyhistory #USArmy #TRADOC #WWII #WW2 #WW2History #Patton #Bastogne #BlackPanther #ShermanTank #BlackHistoryMonth #ArmyHeritage U.S. Army U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command. #repostedfrom @armyhistory (at Columbia, Tennessee) https://www.instagram.com/p/CohszLPuF7Z/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Did you know? Though women have played no small part of the 162-year history of Army Aviation, that this year marks the 50th year since the first women officially qualified as US Army Aviation Soldiers. 2LT Sally Woolfolk and PVT Linda Plock both graduated from their UH-1-series courses in 1974, with WO1 Jennie Vallance following in 1975. While these were but the first women to serve in Army Aviation, Attack-, Cavalry-, and Special Operations-type aircraft were unavailable to women until the early 1990s.

"A Sandy Hook Saint Patrick's Day" Over the years, many performances were held at Fort Hancock to raise the morale and spirits of the troops who were stationed there. Due to its mind (and bone) numbing isolation, this was no easy feat. During World War 2, these programs had to go into overdrive as the number of men at Sandy Hook swelled into the thousands. One such wonderful example is seen here. On March 17th, 1944, in honor of Saint Patrick's Day, a troupe of Irish Step Dancers held a performance in the Post Gymnasium, attached to the YMCA Building. As you can see, it was very well attended. And oh, if only photos came with a soundtrack. ❤️ From a modern standpoint, this building still stands, but like so many others, it is being allowed to disintegrate. 🇺🇲🇺🇲 ** Please Like & Follow "Sandy Hook History" on Facebook & Instagram for more amazing maritime and military histories of the Garden State and New York Harbor as well as a review of the 80th Anniversary of the Battle Of The Atlantic and World War 2** visitmonmouth #newjerseybuzz #thejournalnj #locallivingnj #journeythroughjersey #centraljerseyexists #discovernj #yesnj #newjerseyhistory #newjerseyforyou #sandyhookbeach #sandyhooknj #sandyhookhistory #forthancockhistory #forthancock #fthancock #sandyhook #postgym #ymcabuilding #highlandsnj #vintageholiday #vintageholidays #vintagesaintpatricksday #vintagestpatricksday #vintagedecorations #monmouthcountynj #monmouthcountyhistory #armyhistory #moralebooster #stepdance (at Fort Hancock, New Jersey) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp55-xZAifw/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

#Repost @armyhistory • • • • • • REMEMBERING GENERAL L. COLIN POWELL Colin L. Powell, April 5, 1937 – October 18, 2021, AGE 84 Remembered today as a political leader that worked at the highest levels as the Secretary of State, GEN Collin Powell (Ret.) is also remembered as an exceptional Soldier. As a young ROTC graduate and Second Lieutenant, GEN Powell felt the sting of racism in early 1960’s Georgia but also the remarkable pride of being an infantry officer in the U.S. Army. In 1962 Powell was sent to Vietnam where he worked as an advisor with the South Vietnamese Army until he was injured in 1963. Powell returned to Vietnam in 1968 to serve with the Americal (23rd Infantry) Division where, after a UH-1 Huey he was traveling in crashed, he rescued three Soldiers including the Americal’s division commander, MG Charles M. Getty earning the Soldier’s Medal for his bravery and quick action. Powell went on to serve as a White House Fellow, a battalion commander in Korea, and a brigade commander in the 101st Airborne Division. Powell’s career shifted to that of senior military advisor where he worked for several administrations eventually becoming the third general since World War II to reach four-star rank without ever serving as a division commander, joining Dwight D. Eisenhower and Alexander Haig. He served as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and was the architect of the invasion of Panama (Operation Just Cause) and the Persian Gulf War (Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm). He retired from the Army in 1993. RIP Sir!! #Armyhistory #USArmy (at Worldwide Veterans and Family Services) https://www.instagram.com/p/CVMXNhoMUDf/?utm_medium=tumblr

The first Medal of Honor award classified "Top Secret." Hiroshi "Hershey" H. Miyamura #KoreanWar Miyamura enlisted in the Army and entered active duty at age 19 in January 1945. As a Japanese-American from New Mexico, he volunteered for and was assigned to Company D, 100th Battalion, 442d Infantry Regimental Combat team in #WWII. He was recalled to active duty in the Korean War, and was assigned to Company H, 7th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division. On the evening of 24-25 April 1951, near Taejon-ni, Korea, Company H occupied a defensive position when it was attacked by a numerically superior force of the (Chinese) People's Volunteer Army, better known to U.S. and United Nations troops as Chinese Communist Forces. With his unit in danger of being overrun and their casualties mounting, Cpl. Miyamura, then a machine gun squad leader, left his position to engage a number of the attackers with the bayonet, and killed approximately ten of them in hand-to-hand combat. He repeatedly ordered his men to withdraw as he covered them with rifle fire and damaged the machine gun so the enemy could not use it. He continued firing the machine gun, and although severely wounded in the process, continued to fire and killed about fifty Chinese troops before he ran out of ammunition. Despite the painful injury, he continued to ferociously resist against very uneven odds until he was finally overcome and captured. Miyamura spent 28 months as a prisoner of war. Meanwhile, in recognition of his extraordinary heroism in the battle, the recommendation for the Medal of Honor made its way through the military channels of evaluation and consideration. Because he was a POW, and recognizing the potential propaganda coup the Communists could exploit, the documents were classified "Top Secret," a first in the history of the Medal of Honor. In October of 1953 after the ended and he returned home, President Dwight D. Eisenhower presented now Staff Sergeant Hiroshi "Hershey" H. Miyamura the Medal of Honor in a ceremony at the White House. He died on 29 November 2022, age 97. #armyhistory #MOH #USArmy #TRADOC #MilitaryHistory Posted @withregram • @armyhistory (at Middle Tennessee Area) https://www.instagram.com/p/CnznL7vu4yQ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

During the First World War both the Central Powers and the Allies developed ever larger and heavier artillery such as the famous German ‘Big Bertha’, a 42 cm siege howitzer built by Krupp AG. The Austro-Hungarian army used this 38 cm ‘Belagerungshaubitze’ (siege howitzer) M 16 to crush enemy fortifications. The latge guns were designed and produced by Skoda Works Ltd. from Plzen and first saw action against the Italian army in South Tyrol. To be used these guns had to be mounted on a firing platform, so large that it required a 52 cubic meter pit to excavated. The howitzers even had a special system to load its ammunition shells: a tilting crane left of the turntable could lift the shells from the loading cart to the loading tray. After the Armistice of Villa Giusti (3 november 1918) the guns fell silent. The end of First World War I with the ultimate surrender and defeat of the Central Powers meant the collapse and disestablishment of the Austro-Hungarian Empire which had been slowly falling apart for decades, torn apart by the rise of Nationalism. @hgm_wien #heeresgeschichtlichesmuseum #heeresgeschichtlichesmuseumwien #armymuseumvienna #armymuseum #artillery #siegeartillery #howitzer #siegehowitzer #firstworldwar #worldwar1 #war #army #militaryhistory #warhistory #armyhistory #haubitze #belagerungshaubitze #skoda (bij Heeresgeschichtliches Museum / Militärhistorisches Institut) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1BqVtyFtaC/?igshid=1apb3guld6235

Good morning, everyone. If you got the day off today due to bad weather (as I did), or if you are just off in general, I have a treat for you as we prepare for the Christmas weekend. We had the most amazing response to our post about Jean Shepherd, and I wanted to do a follow up. This is a recording of Jean's radio show regarding Ovaltine, Little Orphan Annie.... and the infamous decoder ring. It is almost verbatim as depicted in the movie, except there's much exponentially more hilarity involved. Now, that having been said, for the good of the order, I ask that you please refrain from driving a car or operating machinery as you listen to this. Simply, you will be able to do neither effectively nor safely. I also recommend not drinking anything, lest you accidentally spackle whatever or whomever is infront of you. Yes, you'll be laughing that hard. The link is in the bio. Enjoy! 🎄😁❤️ 🇺🇲🇺🇲 ** Please Like & Follow "Sandy Hook History" on Facebook & Instagram for more amazing maritime and military histories of the Garden State and New York Harbor as well as a review of the 80th Anniversary of the Battle Of The Atlantic and World War 2** 🇺🇲🇺🇲 Photo: Youtube screenshot #visitmonmouth #newjerseybuzz #thejournalnj #locallivingnj #journeythroughjersey #onlyinnewjersey #njspots #centraljerseyexists #discovernj #yesnj #newjerseyhistory #newjerseyforyou #sandyhookbeach #sandyhooknj #sandyhookhistory #forthancockhistory #forthancock #battleoftheatlantic #jeanshepherd #achristmasstory #armyhistory #famousveterans #asburyparknj #ingodwetrustallotherspaycash #wandahickeysnightofgoldenmemories #ovaltine #littleorphanannie #decoderpin #richhocolatyovaltine #acrummycommercial https://www.instagram.com/p/CmhG3DxL4xO/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
