Despite what he tells his sister, Diana, in the debut season’s eighth episode, Sanditon’s Arthur Parker and Georgiana Lambe are more than just pals. They are increasingly bonded in a way few platonic male-female friends are in Regency-era dramas. The tearoom scene in Sanditon 2×03 (written by Janice Okoh) reveals the depth of their mutual regard as well as the potential danger of overestimating their understanding of each other. The vulnerability portrayed by Crystal Clarke and Turlough Convery gives Okoh’s words an authenticity and intimacy that truly feels like eavesdropping on a private conversation.

Georgiana and Arthur’s relationship began with his mysterious rush to secure a dance after overhearing the size of her fortune in Sanditon 1×01. It evolves through his amusement and encouragement of her assertive self-defense at Lady Denham’s luncheon in Sanditon 1×02. After a micro-scene of a giddy Arthur at the cricket in Sanditon 1×05, we next see Arthur liberating Georgiana from isolation in Sanditon 1×07.

[a drabble? the beginning of a fic? i don’t even know but it’s been done. no turning back now.]

“It hurts me, Arthur,” Georgiana says quietly, laying a hand on his forearm. He starts slightly, as if he is unused to being touched. “To hear you speak of your prospects in such a way. You are a kind and caring man, a good man. You would make any lady a fine husband, I am sure of it.”

His cheeks turn pink as he covers her hand with his own, patting it gently. The flips her hand around to feel his palm against her own, to wrap her fingers around his wrist. He exhales slowly, large brown eyes filling with unshed tears.

“You are most kind, Miss Lambe. Most kind, indeed,” Arthur murmurs, his voice lacking its usual joviality. He licks his lips and gently frees his hand from Georgiana’s. She finds that that is what makes her own eyes fill with tears. “I am well aware of my future and a wife and children are most assuredly not part of it. But do not fret. I have accepted my role in life as a most jolly uncle to his many nieces and nephews and is that not a happy role, indeed?”

Georgiana frowns deeply, her eyes scanning over Arthur’s face. He is not the most handsome of men - his large figure and shy gaze making it easy for any number of women to pass him over. To her utter shame and regret, Georgiana was included amongst them. But she is not blind to him anymore - has not been for quite some time and there are no other eyes on this planet she would rather spend her time gazing into, laughing with . . . loving.

It is reckless and foolish but Georgiana cannot stop herself from leaning forward and pressing a chaste kiss to his lips. Arthur freezes, breath catching in his throat as Georgiana pulls away. There is a stirring in her belly that makes her want to kiss him again and again and again but when she looks up into his eyes all she sees is horror.

“Oh, Arthur,” she whispers, pulling back from him entirely, giving him the space he so clearly needs. Arthur flounders, eyes darting everywhere they can other than Georgiana herself. The stirring in her belly turns into a sick feeling that sinks all the way down to her toes. “That was foolish of me, was it not?”

Arthur’s mouth opens and closes. Once. Twice. Three times. Georgiana finds that she cannot bear it for much longer and moves towards the open doorway. She feels even more a fool realizing just how dangerous kissing Arthur Parker had been. Anyone could have seen and then where would they be? Compelled into a marriage that he clearly did not want? The thought is so abhorrent to Georgiana that she nearly cries from shame.

“Why did you do that?” Arthur asks her back, his voice barely above a whisper. “Miss Lambe? Georgiana? Why would you . . . I confess, I am most perplexed.”

“It was a kiss, Arthur,” Georgiana says over her shoulder, keeping her face turned away from him. She is embarrassed enough as it was, she did not need to add more wood to the flame. “As one does when someone they . . . love is in pain.” Arthur inhales sharply and her entire body goes cold. “I must ask your forgiveness again. It seems that I am at my most impulsive today. I shall see myself out lest I make anymore foolish declarations.”

It is meant to be a joke but the words come out sounding so very pained. She shakes her head and squares her shoulders before turning to look at Arthur again. Georgiana may be feeling foolish but she refused to be a coward as well.

He is staring at her as if he does not know her, as if they had not spent the past year getting to know each other, learning each other’s secrets and fears and loves. What makes them happy or melancholy or furious. There is so much that she knows about Arthur Parker and, yet, she feels as if they are seeing each other clearly for the first time.

“I will not ask forgiveness for the kiss,” Georgiana says softly, trying to catch Arthur’s eye. When he will not meet her gaze directly, Georgiana sighs and focuses on an errant curl that has wrapped itself around his ear. Oh, how she wishes she could comb it back with her fingers, that he was hers to simper over and care for. “For it was given in the most ardent of affections, dear Arthur, and I do not need forgiveness for expressing such a feeling. However, if I have hurt you, please know that that was not my intent. It is never my intent to hurt you, Arthur. For it would be like hurting myself, you see?”

“Georgiana . . .”

She does love the sound of her name on his lips. Georgiana smiles sadly, offering a shallow curtsy before wishing him a good day. He does not say anything, does not try to stop her, does not follow her. Georgiana tells herself that it is fine, that she did not expect anything from Arthur, that she never had. But it does not stop the tears from falling as soon as she has locked herself in her room. It does not stop her heart from aching.

Most importantly, though, it does not stop her from continuing to love him even if he does not feel the same.

Currently watching Sanditon Season 3 after catching up with the first two seasons.

It’s actually not that easy to find contents or analyzes about this show. If you have some, please send them my way. I won’t dive too deeply into Sanditon myself, but here is my quick take on it.

❤️ What I like :

The Original Soundtrack

Ruth Barrett did an amazing job in Season 1. Here is an interview which dives into her process as a composer.

The Overall Aesthetic

I am not immune to a slick take like Emma (2020) which is visually stunning, but I’ve noticed that my taste in period drama movies and tv shows leans toward a more naturalistic look.

Yes, Pride & Prejudice (2005) atmosphere, especially the cinematography by Roman Osin, ruined me.

Georgiana Lambe x Arthur Parker

It’s refreshing to see a friendship between a woman and a man for once. They balance each other out with one who can’t escape people’s scrutiny and the other being constantly overlooked.

Esther Denham x Clara Bereton

The Frenemies. Somehow despite their antagonistic relationship and their twisted behavior, at the end of the day, they have each other’s back. I want more women’s solidarity in stories.

James Stringer

Second lead syndrom ?

Sydney Parker’s death

Not that I wanted him to die but I enjoy the fact that they didn’t brush it under the rug and showed how this event affected his entourage.

Charles Lockhart

I didn’t see that twist coming. I was sad because I love him and his dynamic with Georgiana and Arthur. But I enjoy hating him while re-watching the show.

They did his character a disservice by bringing him back in the third season. It doesn’t ring true to me. Despite himself, I believe he caught some feelings for Georgiana and Arthur along the way.

Samuel Colbourne

I may have a thing for dark hair light eyes men ? Well, he is definitely less boring than his brother.

❌ What I don't like :

Basically? The romantic relationships.

Charlotte Heywood x Sidney Parker

Alright, yes the sexy low voice of Sidney works on me too. But what’s left when you go beyond physical attraction between them ? A man who belittles Charlotte at every turn.

It’s infuriating how many times she apologizes to him when he just barely apologize to her once.

To put a spin on his love declaration : I do not think that Charlotte is her best self with Sidney.

Esther Denham x Lord Babington

The man wore her down and for him, no means yes. Dude, let the woman become a rich heiress and decides what she wants in life. And the all thing about wanting a baby because it’s what Lord Babington deserves ? It reaaally rubs me the wrong way.

Charlotte Heywood x Alexander Colbourne

Oh the all “let’s hook up with my boss” thing. Charlotte wants to financially sustain herself but tried to be a governess once and then gave up ? Sure, she had to stay in Sanditon for the sake of the show’s name but still...

Also, Alexander is boring because he acts like a male lead, brooding, playing with dogs and riding horses but he is not fleshed out. And how many times can he change his mind in less than ten minutes ? Seriously ?

Too bad, I was really curious about the Colbourne household life. Mrs Weathley is such a mood.

And again : what’s left when you go beyond physical attraction between them ?

Coming soon: Irrevocably Gone - My Christmas Special fic

She hated him because he had found it so easy to give her up. She hated him because he was right now somewhere being happy with the woman he had loved for ten years. But most of all she hated Sidney Parker because he had taught her how to love him but not how to shut him out of her heart when her love became an inconvenience to be cast aside and retold through the years as an amusing anecdote to his high society, dandy friends.

I am so excited to announce that after a lot of hard work, blood, sweat and tears, my Christmas Special fanfic is almost ready to be put out into the world.

It’s a 5 part Sidlotte extravaganza that has gained a whole different significance for me since the announcement of the cancelation.

I will start posting this on the 20th of December (this Friday) and will update every day, culminating with the finale on the 25th.

I would like to take this moment to thank @and-holly-goes-lightly for beta reading this and for coming up with the title of the fic. It’s from Jane Austen’s Lady Susan and it’s pretty much perfect for this piece.

What I want to see in “Sanditon”’s season 2 (even if no one has asked me) :

Despite the fact we haven’t received a confirmation yet, I allowed myself to think a lot about it. There’re plenty of things I’m expecting to see in the next season, but I’ll enumerate the most important, namely that:

Charlotte returns to Sanditon more experienced than last time. I don’t want her to come back to the society after a year (?) blocked in her village without any contact with the people she met. We know that she is not “a London fan”... but I want Lady Susan to make her change her mind about it. Sidney and Charlotte were separated especially by the fact that she was not comfortable with “those who matter”. I like that she felts and respects her difference with them, but Lady Susan could teach her how to hide her awkwardness... so that at first Sidney thinks that things are not the same anymore. I want him to realize that he has to catch up with Charlotte... that he missed a lot of things with her.... that she has passed over him. I’m convinced it could hurt him more than a new man in her life... and yes, I want a new love interest for Charlotte for two reasons: to make Sidney sweat, so he finally gives up with this stupid sacrifice, and to make Charlotte understand she can not forget her one love.  

Eliza and Sidney are still engaged and not married yet. I want her to push him towards the wedding, while he’s stalling even if he knows there are not in view other possibilities to save Sanditon.  

Sidney and Charlotte share a kiss while he’s still engaged to Eliza. I don’t want him to cheat on her, but I don’t even want them to kiss each other only when things are resolved... and it would be great if they kissed more than one time in the next season, please. I’m not saying I’m expected to see a GOT’s surrogate, but I’m not annoyed by the sexual content. 

Since the fact that water is their natural element, current in almost every important scenes they shared, I want them to have a bath together... or at least a parallel in which it’s Sidney who “ambushes” her naked. 

Mr Stringer decides to go to London, despite his father’s last will. He is not made for a small city... instead, he deserves more. I want him to fall in love with somebody who’s not Charlotte. If the girl falls in love with him before he does too, we’re golden.

Georgiana grows up and starts to think about what she wants to do with her fortune, following her idea that she is no man’s property.

Tom realizes his own mistakes, leaving Sidney free to marry whoever he wants, after a quarrel in which both decide they’re no longer in debt with each other. 

Arthur discovers himself... gay. Okay, maybe I’m the only one who thinks he could be homosexual, but I always had this feeling. A LGBT character in a Jane Austen’s adaptation... don’t you think it would be great?

Sidney and Georgiana end up from barely tolerating each other to bit by bit becoming big-brother and little sister. We could say that in a certain point of view they already are, but I want Sidney to share his feelings for Charlotte with her and Georgiana to really trust him. It would be beautiful if he finally admits that he doesn’t regret to be her guardian anymore. And that he will be what she likes until she wants to.

Tom saves Sanditon by his own (real, this time) merit, without asking anyone for a loan.

Esther and Charlotte become best friends.

are there any royal names you'd like to see used in the foreseeable future? x

MEGATRON! Sorry, my finger slipped there. My favourite name from the BRF which hasn’t been used for a while is Alexandrina, Queen Victoria’s birth name. I like Alexandra too but Alexandrina is just a bit more jazzy haha. Other names I’d like to see again are Amelia, Matilda, Georgiana, and Adelaide, For boys I like Arthur. I wouldn’t personally use it but I think it’s a nice name which I’d like to see again. 

I think the Swedish royals have gorgeous names, the French influence is beautiful - Alice, Désirée, Thérèse, Amelie. And I also love Sibylla - CG’s mum’s name - but apparently that’s a type of burger restaurant now and lots of Swedes associate that with the name haha. Boys names are more boring, sorry. I will always love when they use Bertil. 

Margrethe’s middle name is Alexandrine which was her grandmother’s name and I like it a lot, just like Alexandrina. Astrid is Benedikte’s middle name and is common in lots of royal families.

authors note: I decided to write a modern, alternative world Sanditon fanfiction, borrowing the characters from J.Austen book. 

It’s a Christmas story

Two days before Christmas Day

"OMG- are we having a white Christmas or what!!" Georgiana said as she walked in the apartment she shared with her friend Charlotte huffing and puffing. She tossed her bag on the sofa taking her coat off, "it's snowing like mad!"

"I know- I've just cancelled my trip to Wilingden- my sister is peeved cos I am not coming- my brother is staying with his girlfriend's family in York " Charlotte put her phone on the table.

Georgiana walked to the fridge and got some water out and then looked at the place that had no Christmas decoration at all.

"Huh- I have to call my dad- he so going to be disappointed-last year I was working - this year it's blizzard, so no planes will be taking off -I can't believe I'll be stuck here though -we don't even have a tree!"

"We always leave and there is like no need for a tree. And I have nearly been living in my office every day for the last two months!" Charlotte said now also looking at the apartment that had a very minimalist style to it and not one Christmas decoration.

"Well, will sleep the Christmas through. I am off to have a shower and call my dad. The sooner the better!" Georgiana said disappearing through a corridor into her room.

Charlotte walked to the window and outside it looked like London would become one huge ice box as the storm was starting to pick up. The forecast said blizzard - and so it was. The brunette scrunched her face in disappointment. She so looked forward to her trip to Wilingden to see her sister and her nephews. She was the perfect host and her Christmas was always one from a fairy-tale. It also took her back to the time of her childhood there. Now sleeping through Christmas seemed to be the best option.

Her phone ringing brought her back from her thoughts and she went to pick it up from the table answering the call."Esther- no- I’m at the flat- and you?"

"At the pub." Esther said, "We finished work much earlier than I thought we would and we went for a drink- looks like we will stay here tonight- it's mad outside! Why don't you come down- everyone is here!"

"I don't know" Charlotte said-"not really in the mood"

"Seriously- the party is in full swing - come on!"

She  now heard Diana shouting in the phone, "Get down here, Heywood.” 

"She is there?" Charlotte said.

"Come on -you two need to bury the hatchet! It's Christmas!!" Esther said, adding once again, "Everyone is here!! Get Georgiana-she's not answering her phone!"

"Yeah-why not!" Charlotte said and hanging up went to knock at Georgiana’s bedroom door.

"Come in!" Georgiana said looking at her friend with a sour face.

"How did your dad take it? Not good!" Charlotte said knowing the answer.

"Can it get worse?” Georgiana huffed.

"Esther called- they are at the ‘Admiral’! I'm going!" Charlotte said.

"They? That means Otis is there, too?" Georgiana asked, her eyes glittering.

"That means Otis is there too!" Charlotte shot a significant look at her best friend.

"It can get worse!" Georgiana puffed away.

"It's Christmas- maybe you can two can be friends again! Start from there.”

"You think we can be friends -after what he did” Georgiana breathed in deep.

"Sorry- I know we said we won't talk about it ever- but - I am not leaving you here on your own- there's a party out there - and we need fun- lot's of it- all we did is work work this year!" Charlotte suddenly got her bossy frown on and Gerorgiana agreed to come along.

Soon, they were fighting their way with the snowfall to the pub.

The bar was owned by Arthur Parker, and it was the favourite hangout of his friends and family. The Parker’s were also known for throwing a good party. They were also known for being big time heart-breakers- and Georgiana had a taste of that last summer.

"Yay! They made it!" Arthur shouted as Elena and Caroline came in nearly completely frozen.

Esther went straight to her friends. As the girls came up to the counter, Arthur slid the prepared shots for them to warm up a bit.

"So, I hear you are staying in London for the holidays!?" Tom cut in greeting both Charlotte and Georgiana.

"We are" Charlotte replied-"this going to be the bleakest Christmas ever- we don't have a tree- and there is only frozen yogurt and pizza in the fridge- ah- Georgiana and I decided to sleep it through."

"Sounds bleak- " Tom said and as he wanted to say more Mary swooped in apologising for the interruption, and took her husband away.

Charlotte took a deep breath and now got ready to have it out with Diana Parker.

"Right-look-" Diana started-"ok, first sorry for being a complete whiny bitch. Well- being a bitch and sorry for making things difficult with Sid."

"Wow!" Charlotte was wide-eyed "I never thought you would admit that. Ok. What is really going on?"

"What do you mean?”

“This is about James - I told you that there is nothing going on between us. We’re only friends!” Charlotte raised her eyebrow at Diana.

“If I help you with James - you got to help me with Otis and Georgiana.”

“Ugh- you drive a hard bargain!" Diana was not really happy about it.

"Take it or leave it!" Charlotte said victoriously as she knew Diana had it bad for James Stringer, and all got really confusing the last summer in Sanditon.

"Deal!" Diana said and smiled happily and now floated away to one of her friends.

At the bar, Georgiana was talking to Esther who was somewhat ignoring  Babington’s presence and  yet somewhat paying very much attention to his conversation with Sidney. Charlotte joined them as she finished sending Stringer the message about the party here and at ‘The Admiral’.

"So, buried the hatchet?!" Esther asked her friend.

"Sort of-" Charlotte replied mysteriously.

"Right " Esther didn’t want to dwell into it and changed the subject, "we've been talking about you staying and the silliness of you two sleeping the Christmas through. Sidney here suggested they would take care of the tree and the food- and we can get it all done tomorrow. I know it's Christmas Eve- but hey- it will stop snowing eventually-" Esther now shot a poignant look at Babington.

"Sidney?" Charlotte was baffled that he suggested such a thing or maybe not.

Sidney Parker, who now heard her and moved suddenly all his attention to her involving his best friend Babington in the conversation as well.

"Tom said that you said that you will have the bleakest Christmas ever - well, I thought- why should you. We can help you out- we have caterers ready in no time- also can get one of the trees from our many trees from the mansion delivered to you- our mother overdoes everything- "

"Yes!" Arthur now stepped in, "you can even take this one from the bar if you like it- it's just crowding the space here"

"Why would you do this for us?" Charlotte was surprised at such generous offer.

Babington swayed his look at Esther and then turned to Charlotte,"Seriously, you need to ask?  You are our friends- and we like you- a lot! It’s as simple as that."

Esther took a mental breath and just took a shot of gin. The hurt was still very much alive in her. Her heart just didn't want to shut him down. 

"No catering necessary" Charlotte said, "I am going to cook! You just get the tree! But aren’t you going to Sanditon?"

“No, we are staying in London” Sidney now spoke. 

“You can all come to our place for Christmas” Tom shot from the side looking at Sidney, giving him a nudge to kind of agree with the sudden invitation.

“Yes. Come to our place for Christmas.” Sidney said looking at Charlotte with his eyes gleaming warmly at the brunette.

This came out as a great surprise and Georgiana now reacted cheerfully, " Now you're talking!"

Sidney raised a glass at Charlotte, who smiled back at him, nodding a yes.

 And what was the actual deal with Charlotte and Sidney? Well, they were great friends. Did they harbour other feelings that go beyond the "friends"- thing. Arthur would say DUH! But both of them felt that if there were anything more it would ruin the friend thing and so they stayed in the zone, even after the kiss in Sanditon a few months back. But they both dismissed it, as staying friends seemed to be far more important. Also, there was a certain meddling from Diana, as well as Sidney’s lingering feelings for a certain ex, Eliza Campion. 

Only Babington and Esther had kind of blurred the friend-zone with their short something in the summer in Sanditon. And for an unexplained reason or a non-intentional mix-up Babington understood they were non-exclusive but Esther thought they were exclusive and afterwards when Babington spent a night with his ex everything went kaboom.

Last, but not least, Diana, who was the feisty sister, who fell in love every five minutes, always choosing guys who cared more about her money than her heart, who was very fragile, hiding it behind a bitchy exterior. Charlotte and her didn't hit it off, which caused her advocating for Eliza and causing problems  quite inadvertently with her and Sidney. 

Ok, and now back to the party in the pub.

Every year they had a game going and Arthur now rang the bar bell announcing it. “Everyone, it's time for the Make My Wish Game! You know the rules, and those who don’t Tom will explain!"

Make My Wish was a game invented by the bar staff- people would write down their wishes on a peace of paper with their name on and all is put in a bag and then randomly people would pick out the papers with the wish needed to be fulfilled.

Arthur, as the owner, made sure that there was no indecent wishes, expensive and offensive ones. People who didn't follow the rules were disqualified.

What wishes did our heroes and heroines of this story put down? Hm...you can imagine or write it down yourself. Anyway, Stringer arrived just in time to write his wish down.

Will all their wishes come true- those written down and those hidden in their heart? What do you think?
