Does this make Chara a darkner because of the object, or are they a lightner because their from the light world?

So this goes way back when people were asking about Dark World Chara. I had my worries about how that would work, since Chara has no body to gain a Dark World form. People suggested for them to possess an item in order to do so and this in turn would turn them into an "artificial Darkner". They work the same way as normal Darkners do, but with additional perks, such as entering other Dark Worlds without turning into stone. But they are only corporeal in the Dark World. Idk if it was clear enough that they are possessing the locket and that Frisk did not just randomly mitose (even though Susie might think otherwise)

I’m not sure how this would happen, as it could only happen if they met after they were dead, but I’m curious how Westleaf and the others would react to A. Justin.

He’s the first of what I call the amalgamate kids. These are forms that happen when a soul comes into contact with the specific amalgamate that contains the determination extracted from their soul. In Justin’s case, his determination was used in memoryhead, the weird cellular entity.

In this form it combines the amalgamates personality and the kids to varying degrees. Unlike the others who retain at least a portion of theirselves, being as memoryhead isn’t a normal monster and was artificially created, it basically takes over with only slight hints of Justin’s own personality. Which makes A. Justin monotone, expressionless, and kind of creepy.

But he’s also my favorite amalgamate kid because he’s hilarious since A Justin is basically an ai with all the self preservation of someone who’s never been able to die before. He eats coins and scraps of metal, and mimics sound effects when it sees others doing things but applies the wrong sound affect. Like if someone uses a card on an id machine he makes a coin slot sound. He needs to be watched constantly or he will vanish

HOO BOY. My Souls are not going to react to this well at all, especially Westleaf. I could see this even shaking up Hawthorne, who’s known for not really showing his emotions to things and has a resting bitch face. The younger SOULS would be very unsettled by A.Justin’s behavior…especially Frisk

Westleaf would be constantly watching him to make sure he doesn’t do anything wrong and hurt himself, girlie is so worried for A.Justin she is NOT getting sleep‼️‼️

Anyhow, you’re probably familiar with r/place.

Last year, i was co-leading the group that created a Chara on r/place (We even got a shoutout in a Jackspepticeye video :D)

This year, i have been forced to watch idly by as something pretty awful took place. I’ll try and make it short.

The “void”, a swarm of empty black space that spreads around everywhere consuming the canvas, is actually unable to fight any of the bigger structure that use bots and cheats to keep themselves up this year. Due to all these projects being ready sooner and with more preparation.

So instead, it just goes around left and right, destroying the “”easy targets”” of the tiny pixel art works of small communities who spent days trying to create them in their tiny corner of the map, and ignores all the poorly made botted artificial creations, the plain flags which do nothing but to waste the available space, and ruin the spirit of the event...

Basically, it only targets the kind of art that r/place was actually supposed to be about making, and which are now a tiny minority this year.

Yesterday, it decided for some reason to make another beeline of 200+ pixels forward just to go destroy 3 small independent artworks, including one of Undertale. It was just a small wholesome pixel art of Frisk and Chara based on this image. And which had only just been finished 15 minutes before after having been in the works for days.

The people behind it , quite determined, spent the entire night, without even sleeping, trying to fight that void off in order to save their artwork from being destroyed for nothing but funsies, only to be overrun just right now and that was just awful to watch unfold in real time. There is almost nothing left  of their art now aside from some people from the “void” making fun of them for trying to resist their swarm...

So well, if anyone reading this wants to go and try to help them save it or rebuild it, it was located at -90, -800. I hope that whatever amount of clout i have can bring them a little support after this... Watching this happen from just makes me feel awful and i felt like i needed to do or say something about it.

Okay, what is Poppy?

Throughout the Omega Timeline: Poppy's Story AU, I've realized that, beyond Poppy's origin, and her acquiring her SOUL, I've never truly delved into what Poppy is exactly. Though her """species""" is generously described as a "Ostensibly, Paper Human", that's not really true. Paper Frisk is unquestionably a paper human, so really, Poppy's true nature hasn't really been explained up until now. Though 4 years late, I've written up an entire post going over some things I've jotted down over the years of how she works.

Any addendums I may make will be listed at the bottom of the page.

What species is she?

What is she, then?

Poppy was originally a drawing by a Chara, brought to life by Ink Frisk- whose magic specializes in bringing things to life through art. Though useful in a pinch, they would have never expected something like Poppy to come out of it. In this form, Poppy was essentially moving through the motions, doing as told. Though having some semblance of understanding of what was told to her, she lacked any means of communicating it.

Of course, this wasn't going to last forever, even if Core fed her magic food, the spell would eventually run its course. Thus, they resorted to one of the recently-rescued scientists: (a) W.D. Gaster. But everyone calls him Fling Ding.

Through Fling Ding's efforts, Poppy was given an artificial SOUL, and was thus born anew. The SOUL inherited all of the body's thoughts and loose memories, and has thus become what Poppy is. This generally implies that Poppy IS the soul, that pilots a paper body. ... But, of course, it's a bit more complicated like that.

How is she 3D, if she's made out of paper?

(Core doesn't naturally have magic, they have to pull it out of a jar every time..)

This is achieved through an obscure spell that Core's learned of through their eternal omnipresence. This spell provides Poppy with all the perks of 3D. Though, of course, it also takes magic to uphold.

When young, Poppy would often be tired from attempting to uphold this spell. When she fell asleep, she would do so as 2D, then core would have to cast the spell at her in the morning. As years went by and her SOUL grew stronger however, she's rarely ever seen in 2D, even when sleeping.

Not to say she doesn't have days where she simply... Can't turn 3D at all. But they're few and far between. As long as she eats healthily, and has a good sleep schedule, it usually doesn't happen.

What does she eat?

Her diet consists of magic food, mostly. Given she does not have any digestive system, any physical food she may try to eat, sort of... Lounges in her mouth until she spits it out. She can taste it, but no one likes to chew on food for longer than needed. She also drinks regular water and whatnot.

Wait, but is she waterproof? Is water going to kill her? How can she drink?

I've pondered myself this many times. But, ultimately, I feel like Core wouldn't just... make her live a life where she is constantly afraid of the weather, or even washing dishes. So I believe she has some waterproof magic going on.

As for how drinking water or any non-magic liquid works for her, I'm not sure. Maybe her body just, naturally fizzles out the water with the magic.

Okay, how does she grow up?

Very good question! Poppy's bodies are drawings on paper after all. You would think that maybe, the body magically ages up. But, at least for this Poppy, it doesn't work like that.

Poppy's bodies are custom-drawn by the Chara who drew her originally (who doesn't really ask why core would need a life-size drawing of their character, they pay very good money) at every stage of her life. And it's not just one body per stage, no. Poppy is a slightly reckless person, so she's had her fair share of accidentally hurting herself.

So now to the gut of the question, how does she go from body to body? It's a fairly simple task, actually!

Whenever she jumps on a similar looking body, the process is quite seamless, but when she jumps onto a taller body— or, really, a body that's drastically different than her current one, it takes some readjusting.

"So that's not my left arm..."

However, after some time adjusting, she's up and ready to go again.

As for what happens with the previous bodies, however...

Core keeps them safely stored somewhere unknown.

Wait, hold on, could she possess any drawing? Even something baseless and meaningless like a scribble?

She could. But it's not exactly pleasant for her. It's like trying to steer a car that's a block of wood. But yes, besides those types of drawings, she could feasibly look like anyone or anything given enough time. Her voice would be a dead giveaway however.

How can she change clothes? Or cut her hair without damaging the paper? How can she speak without vocal cords? How can her body know what's under the clothes when it's drawn with clothes?

Magic. ... Honestly, magic. I just don't have a better explanation. But I would imagine that if, for example, you tried to cut her hair in 2D, that would lead to less-than-desirable results.

How much does she feel? Does she see the world differently?

Another excellent question, hypothetical reader. As I had written it originally in the askblog, I sort of liked the idea that Poppy had a very limited perception of the world. She couldn't feel anything touching or burning her, she could barely taste, she could barely smell. And she can hardly be aware of anything outside of her view (she doesn't have the gut feeling of feeling she has intimidating people next to her, for instance).

But with Core teaching her that everyone's not always as bad as they seem (especially with her found family choices), it's not like this last aspect has changed much.

But, as years went by, I had a very different idea. What I've said would remain true... through more or less the first few months or so of Poppy being in a new body. As her SOUL attuned to the body, she would slowly build more human-esque senses. And perhaps even more human characteristics as well such as sweating. These being rooted in Poppy's understanding of humans... so, mostly Dusted, Core, and Mon for a good while.

As for eyesight, I've had the idea she does see things different than you and I, but I'm just not sure how to convey it through drawing or writing, so it's generally remained shelved for the time being.

... And that's all she wrote! If anything needs adding, it will be done under this. For now, consider yourself a Poppy-ologist.

I get the feeling once Flowey and Chara learn about how Clover came back, they start attempting to recreate a similar circumstance to 1. Give Flowey/Asriel a soul again and 2. Make it so Chara can actually live their life not just as a semi translucent ghost in Frisk's head

Plus Chara hates humanity, so them turning into a monster and coming back to life probably sounds like a win-win to them

oh yeah for sure. while they dont know HOW clover came back, they are for sure at least a little bitter it didnt happen to them. they finally accept their situation for what it is and the hand they’ve been dealt and then some fuckin kid gets resurrected as a monster and its like are u for real??????

i dont know if they would try anything. frisk would probably be the one to stop them from doing anything. as much as chara would love to be a monster (it sounds cool as hell and they’ve always hated humanity, being a human) both they and flowey dont have souls anymore; and a fake artificial one isnt possible. clovers soul is real; it never faded. its still their soul just combined with different elements. at the end of the day flowey and chara know they wouldnt have a chance; their souls have been gone for ages

So, Undertale.

The funny thing to me about Undertale is that anything the game, and it's fangames, try to tell the player about peace and choosing non-violence falls completely and pathetically flat for at least one big reason: no one who isn't a main character takes that lesson for themselves.

Sure, Undyne chills out, you can guilt Toriel down, you can therapize the Amalgamates, you can even redeem Asriel, but what about the random encounters and side bosses...?

When does Washua stop trying to drown a child? When does Froggit stop pouncing? Why does Snowdrake, a literal child, think it's a cool idea to murder someone in the woods? When does Tsundereplane finally figure out that killing her senpai doesn't work? When exactly is Muffet supposed to learn that killing and eating people for not giving her money is bad? Are any of them even meant to go through the same improvement others do?

Are they after human souls? In most cases, apparently not, because much of the Underground doesn't even recognize Frisk as human in the first place. Even Undyne apparently needs to be told what the human is wearing to find them, as if she wouldn't be able to recognize a human right away.

Are they trying to "communicate through magic" but are inadvertently doing harm because magic is like that? No, that was a fan theory people came up with to explain why they attacked first. If monster magic really did work like that, then Frisk would have to avoid projectiles in every. Single. Conversation. You can buy items without dodging the SOUL around heaps of merchandise. You can talk to the Snowdin bear without having to duck around the presents he's setting under the tree. You can hang out with Papyrus without having to dodge his bones during the entire date.

The only explanation we are left with is that some people in the Underground just really love murder, and will happily attack anything that crosses their line of sight.

Hell, even the cripplingly depressed Shyren will STILL make a token effort to kill Frisk. Like, whats her deal?

Why do we want to befriend people like that? Especially if they keep trying it after being spared? It'd be understandable if each encounter only showed up ONCE and then was befriended from then on, but no, every time until post-game True Pacifist they will keep coming back to try to kill Frisk.

Where are all the moralizing friendship speeches about their actions?

Random civilians are free to attack children with impunity, but those same children acting in self-defence or fighting back is abominable, enough to make humanity in it's entirety worthy of genocide.

And genocide is the Underground's goal, in case everyone forgot. The whole purpose of Asgore absorbing the human souls and "becoming god" (that's literally how it's described in the game) is to take revenge on humanity. Asgore may not be willing to go through with it because he's a depressed weeny, but everyone else is pretty hyped for the destruction of humanity once the doors are open.

And for what, exactly? The Underground is perfectly livable. All that's missing is the sun, but unless a lack of vitamin D is what's turning everyone into slavering psychopaths, I don't see the problem. They can probably even just make their own artificial sun with the technology they have. Everyone's just hyped up on propaganda about how cool the surface is.

Is their bereavement worth the explicit extinction of the human race? Is it worth the inevitable monster casualties that will come from humans fighting back? I don't think so, to be quite honest.

I think the hypocrisy of this running thread is best displayed in the Yellow fangame, by Martlet during the game's Genocide route:

"We only took five, but you've taken dozens".

Sure, that's factually true, but it's also a fact that you intend to take the rest of humanity whether they fight back or not. It's not equivalent if the plan was always to do worse damage. It's hypocrisy.

The player (and by extension Frisk) has to put in extreme amounts of work into building relationships with people who will gladly turn physically violent at the drop of a hat, who are literally planning a genocide, constantly defying logic and self-preservation just to get a couple shots in on Some Guy.

Hell, I don't think Frisk as a person even comes into it in the first place. They are just a shell for us, the players, to experience the story.

And why? Because we saw a let's play of it? Because game reviewers said it was game of the decade? Because we want to see what it's like to play? To "befriend" these oh-so-whacky, predictable characters again and again a decade after the game's heyday?

The story, in the end, is all to fulfill a narrative who's foundation is a shaky legend about humans being mean to monsters millenia ago, some immortal, royal brats having bruised egos, and a mutated goat prince scaring a bunch of peasants into violence, told from the perspective of the Underground, with little inference as to what the surface is actually like.

For all we know, Asgore and Toriel are lying and were the conquering tyrants of a human-monster empire who were sealed underground by opposing kingdoms of the surface in the days of yore, causing them to rewrite history (and "rewrite" population demographics) to make themselves look like the victims to their entirely-captive audience. If the barrier was a cooperative measure, it would go a long way to explain why human and monster souls are both needed to break it. if the humans really DID want to kill all monsters to prevent their souls being stolen, why were the monsters allegedly allowed to surrender? The royals even have an equally-immortal "war hero" at their beck and call with a cross-game skill for writing Tolkien-esque fantasy literature, settled down "doing archaeology work" in the region where the Underground's supposed history is written. That's a coincidence, I'm sure.

All that said, and mostly by the by, I say Deltarune is the better game.

The previous, pitiless freaks are friendly neighbours. The foes in the Dark World are overlords, mercenaries, guards, animals, and madmen - people with purpose to capture or kill the Lightners, rather than random civilians who see fit to attack anything that crosses their path. It makes sense. Plus, the story is actually engaging, the mystery is more intriguing, the characters are more entertaining, Kris is an actual character with a will of their own that we are explicitly subverting, and the "evil route" is actually, undeniably evil.

Deltarune came first conceptually, if you will all remember. Undertale is the weird off-kilter AU Toby made for practice. Not the other way around. And it definitely shows.
