This newfound time to reflect is a great opportunity to see the connections between one pice and the next. Phi came out of my fascination for geometry and patterns found in nature. It’s apparent that it’s as relevant in my current work as it was then, although now, I can see many more layers of meaning. I’m revisiting the practice of sacred geometry and making new links every day. Phi was a piece I made for a show that was curated by @alexis_soul_gray . It has since been exhibited in Sweden @avestaart for their show Struktur. You can find the full video on my website (link in bio). . . . . #phi #art #sitespecificart #installation #sculpture #parallax #observation #perception #visualperception #lightplay #repetition #sacredgeometry #geometry #patternsinnature #calmingcontent #timetoreflect #artisticpractice #alexandracarr #contemporaryart #contemporaryartist https://www.instagram.com/p/B_cXHULlP7E/?igshid=lhxapw4ikx0t

Plan and Play, Play and Plan: ⁣ Defining Your Art Practice⁣ Available at www.draw-down.com⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ How, as an #artist (or #designer, photographer or other “independent creator”), do you become who you are and who you would like to be? How can you guide your artistic practice? Plan and Play, #Play and #Plan invites artists to explore their own questions about their work, using analytical models to help them determine where they stand and what they stand for. Editor #JanwillemSchrofer was director of Amsterdam's #Rijksakademie from 1982 to 2010, and thus knows from practical experience the complexity of the artist's dilemmas and how important self-reflection is for #artisticpractice. Looking back over his pedagogical experience and assembling notes and pointers gathered from interviews with a wide variety of artists, Schrofer has developed an appealing #guidebook intended for artists and those who wish to become artists. 🌕I’m still here🌕 I guess I’m just hiding away a little bit until I finally have a great body of work to show off. 🌘 However, I love looking at other artists #wips and sketchbook pages so here’s a little look at something I worked on the other day. I’m currently working on colour and shape compositions with gouache, oil pastel and acrylic pen. I’m dreaming of painting a huge mural with gorgeous, vivid colours. One day.... 😴. As always, so many ideas buzzing around my head. I often feel guilty that I’m not using enough text in my work, but right now I’m just seeing what happens when I sit down and start making. It’s not always a conscious decision. ✨ ________________________#mural #muraldesign #painter #paint #gouache #gouachepainting #gauchepaint #artist #emergingartist #journalentry #sketchbook #sketch #sketchbookentry #mustardyellow #colourtheory #composition #artistsoninstagram #artoftheday #paintingoftheday #mixedmedia #handmade #creativeprocess #artisticprocess #artisticpractice (at Bath, Somerset)

TODAY! Save 10% on EVERYTHING! Code: MISFITS / Publishing as Artistic Practice / Available at www.draw-down.com / What does it mean to publish today? Concepts of ownership, authorship, work, accessibility and publicity are being renegotiated in the face of a changing media landscape, institutional upheavals and discursive shifts in legal, artistic and political arenas. The field of publishing not only stands at the intersection of these developments but is also introducing new ruptures. This reader of “19 texts and 69 images” by artists, publishers and scholars demonstrates that the question of publishing has moved from the margin to the center of aesthetic and academic discourse. Includes essays by media studies/contemporary literature scholar Paul Benzon; Vienna-based artists Michalis Pichler and Bernard Cella; founder of Wendy’s Subway (a library reading room and workshop) Matt Longabucco; graphic designer Ann Richter; curator Rachel Valinsky; Neural magazine founder Alessandro Ludovico; New York–based Armenian Iraqi–American writer K. Antranik Cassem; and Moscow-based artist Vadim Zakharov. Importance of Various Literacies
Empower them now! 💙
Tumblr media
When we think of literacy, we usually think of the ability to read and write. However, the understanding of literacy that we possess is often curtailed by our educational experiences. Those of us in the field of education know that there are numerous types of literacy, all of which help us navigate life and fully engage in our democratic society. Here are some of the importance of copious literacies.
1. Basic Literacy
Tumblr media
📘 Students need literacy in order to engage with the written word in everyday life. Think of how often you use your own reading skills in everyday life. Being able to read and write means being able to keep up with current events, communicate effectively, and understand the issues that are shaping our world.
2. Cultural Literacy
Tumblr media
📘 Cultural literacy is about understanding each other and where we come from, as well as where we are going.  Every person has a different culture to them, some connect and some differ.  These differences are important to look at so that we can understand where each other is coming from and respect it.  It is hard to respect things and really accept them if we do not understand them.  We tend to push away and fear the unknown.  This only causes problems for our interactions and our future.
3. Social Literacy
Tumblr media
📘 Social literacy is so crucial in a persons success. The ability to communicate and voice opinions and thoughts, as well as listening to opinions and thoughts of others, is essential in learning. Firmly grasping social cues and norms is extremely beneficial. In literally every single setting of our lives:school, home, work, clubs and activities, interacting with people whether face to face or behind technology, we use our social literacy. We play so many roles everyday and we socially need to understand how to play those roles appropriately.
4. Financial Literacy
Tumblr media
📘 When you're financially literate, you're able to allocate your income toward various goals simultaneously—not just to ongoing expenses, but to savings, debt repayment and a rainy day fund too. You can navigate the financial marketplace with self-assurance, and you have the tools to thoroughly research things like loans, credit cards and investment opportunities.
5. Media Literacy
Tumblr media
📘 Media literacy helps students become wiser consumers of media as well as responsible producers of their own media. Along those same lines, teaching media literacy helps to foster critical thinking in students. This type of thinking can eventually become second nature, which will help them in many areas as they grow older. The focus is more on strengthening process skills, not content knowledge. In a larger context, media literacy also fosters the skills that help people work together in collaboration because it encourages respectful discourse and builds citizenship skills.
6. Ecological Literacy
Tumblr media
📘 Mother Nature is very important for our future. A major part of our future are our kids. We must teach them ecological literacy so as to make them learn how important it is to take care of the environment. Being introduced to nature from when they are little children will help develop in them a deep love and solicitude for their surrounding environment.
7. Artistic Literacy
Tumblr media
📘 Arts literacies help students develop design-thinking, creativity and critical thinking—all skills said to be importantfor the future workforce. Artisticpractices intrinsically involve the reception-production of “signs” in a continuous process of “translation” from one 'language' to another.
8. Critical Literacy
Tumblr media
📘 Critical literacy helps us to read texts in deeper, more meaningful ways, by encouraging readers of all ages to become more actively engaged and use their power to construct understanding and not be used by the text to fulfill the intentions of the author.
. . .
"Literacy is the road to human progress and the means through which every man, woman and child can realize his or her full potential.”
— Kofi Annan
