One evening, a few weeks into his stay in Erebor, Bilbo sat hunched over a heavy metal desk, perched high on a pair of cushions, his hairy feet dangling off the edge of the chair. He’d been hard at work for hours, drafting what would one day become the first chapter of their fated quest. 

Thorin approached him from behind and set his hand on Bilbo’s shoulder. He leaned down and pressed a kiss to his temple. “I’m going to sleep. Join me when you’re ready. Don’t hurry on my account. Your candlelight does not bother me.” 

“Mhmm, be there soon,” replied Bilbo, his brow furrowed in concentration as he mouthed the words of the sentence he was trying to get just right. “Ah, Thorin, Thorin…” he looked up suddenly and swiveled around.

Thorin had just finished ducking out of his embroidered tunic. The flickering light of the roaring hearth set into the wall and the dim glow of the sunstones huddled up against Bilbo’s plants tossed flattering shadows across the thick muscle of his back. It also highlighted the pure white scar tissue rimmed in silver where Azog’s blade had sliced him through. Elvish medicine had saved his life, but he would always bear the mark of his nemesis and feel the wound echoed in the movement of his body. 

Thorin looked over his shoulder and lifted a brow when Bilbo called his name. “Mhmm?”

Bilbo found himself staring. He still wasn’t used to seeing the dwarven king in a state of undress, especially in so casual and intimate a moment. A physique such as Thorin’s was unknown among hobbits, which went some of the way towards explaining why Bilbo had never found a lover among his own kind. There was much more there, of course, but the physical nature of his attraction had caught him off-guard more than once since he’d found the courage to acknowledge it. 

Thorin noticed Bilbo’s wandering gaze and turned around. He made a bit of a cheeky show of leaning up against the wall next to the hearth, as if aware that the firelight did much to flatter his body. 

Bilbo swallowed, twitched his nose and tap-tapped his pen against a spare bit of paper he used to blot the ink. “Do you…” he cleared his throat, “...do you think there’s someone who could teach me Khuzdul? I should like to add some dwarvish script to my book. I’ve also heard that Smaug left the archive virtually untouched and there are many wonderful and ancient tomes that are still in good condition. But I can’t read any of them. And that…” he rapped his pen again, “... is a speeeeecial kind of torture.”

Thorin was a stoic man, capable of very subtle expressions. But the delight at hearing Bilbo’s request was immediate and obvious. He smiled, his eyes lighting up as warm as hearthfire. He crossed the great chamber to Bilbo’s side and reached out to cup his cheek. “I will send for a scholar from the Iron Hills to be your tutor. You will have the advantage of learning under a master of languages.” 

“That’s really not necessary. I can muddle along with some references and a helper. I don’t want you to go to a lot of trouble,” Bilbo replied. He felt the tips of his ears burn red, and he was suddenly grateful for the mess of his hair and the low shimmer of light.

Hullo! First writing update of 2024! 💛

Before we do anything, let's all appreciate my lovely new word count spreadsheet, courtesy of the very clever @lordoftherazzles - Please go drop praise and tribute at her feet, she is a genius!

I won't lie, I've been very burned out recently. I'd hoped to get a lot of writing done over the festive break, but I really only did a very little in the end. I had a pretty bad bout of depression, and it took my legs out from under me somewhat. I haven't been on tumblr much either, and I've honestly lost track of a lot of fics I'm reading, so bear with me while I get all my plates spinning again!

I've doubled my weekly word count goal from 2k to 4k, which I was mostly achieving anyway, but has now been formalised. I'm hoping this will help a bit with maintaining my energy and enthusiasm, as I only need to write 1k four times a week, Mondays to respond to comments (oh lordy, I've been horrible at that lately!), Fridays for a final edit before posting, and a day with no pressure to do anything at all, which is quite lovely!

It's also my hope that this will help me keep the chapters from getting quite so long! If I want to update weekly, and I'm wanting to only write four times a week, this will hopefully help me learn when to split chapters (like I have with this most recent update!).

Anyway, this is long! Hope everyone is doing well, and enjoying the new year! Much love! 💛

This is just a thing I will probably delete later- but does anyone know any Bagginshield fics where like Thorin and Bilbo return to the Shire after the BotFA and they turn up to Bilbo’s stuff been auctioned off?

Cuz I swear I had one but my tabs deleted themselves and I can’t remember what it’s called. But I also want to find other fics with which this happens cuz like- I actually don’t know why but I feel I need to read something with which this happens. It seems funny is all.

If not then I may just write something myself but I wanted to ask to see if anyone did know any fics with this in.

Post-BotFA, while Thorin, Fili, and Kili are slowly recovering from their wounds, Bilbo finds himself subject to a condition that hobbits might experience at a few very particular times in their lives, under very particular circumstances, none of which apply to him. Very confused (and somewhat embarrassed) he decides to keep it a secret during this delicate time in the mountain. This goes about as well as you might expect. ((My first (solo) multi-chapter fic for this fandom. My first long!fic since the pandemic kicked off. Thanks to the many excellent Bagginshield writers who came before me, whose incredible work inspired creativity in me that I haven't felt in a long time. I hope folks like what I've come up with. Chapters will be posted every other day unless I'm unavoidably detained.))

Summary:

In the rolling hills of the Shire, where the simple life is cherished and magic is a rarity, one hobbit was blessed by the Valar themselves, Bilbo Baggins. Unfortunately for Bilbo, his abilities brought him nothing but trouble and strife, and so he strived to live a quiet and unremarkable life and fit in with the rest of polite hobbit society. Alas, fate had other plans for him, and when the call to adventure came in the form of a band of dwarves seeking his aid on a quest to reclaim their homeland, Bilbo could no longer ignore the Valar's will. His journey would be perilous and his path uncertain, but with steadfast companions by his side and a love that burned brighter than any forge, Bilbo would rise to his destiny and become a hero of legend.

Chosen Horizons is a Bilbo/Thorin fanfic about a certain reluctant hobbit and determined dwarf who are both too stubborn for their own good.

This fic has a fully completed rough draft of 480+ pages, and the first few chapters are currently being beta'd before publishing. I am incredibly proud of this fic and I cannot wait to share it with everyone! It is incredibly lore heavy and I have done SO much research and am excited to geek out about it with ya'll.

Fortinbras I Took's wife is never named...so I decided to give her one. She is named Lunabia Underhill. Lunabia has multiple meanings/symbolisms...my favorite being "am I forgotten?" (and Underhill because it is a rather common family name in The Shire and Bree, and I felt that Bilbo would probably use a family name when he's using a fake name).

Lorembaron: Lore (dreams/visions) + Umbar (fate/doom)+ On , more or less meaning "Dreamer of Fate" or "He Who Dreams of Fate" in Quenya.

This fic will have a good bit of Elvish (Sindarin and Quenya) and Neo-Khuzdul in it...but I am no Middle-Earth Linguist, so please take my translations loosely.

I'm super excited to get this published and share it and I hope, when I do, you all enjoy it!

How To Make In The Same Breath

Description: It was just an arrangement. It was all it was supposed to be. It was just supposed to be brief, soft, fleeting touches hidden by the cloak of the night. Thorin wasn’t supposed to fall in love — not when Bilbo Baggins won’t ever love him. And he won’t ever stay.

Serving size: 25k words (3 chapters per serving)

Nutrition info:

Total feels: 8g

Total angst: 3g

Fluff: 37g

Vitamin (S)hippiness: 240mg

Ingredients:

11 eggs

~2 cups fluff

1 1/2 cups Shakespearean-inspired writing style (or: purple prose)

2 tsp slight symbolism and diction

300g bagginshield

1/2 cup angst

1/2 tsp references to Hobbitish and Dwarfish culture

2 tsp of cuddling

Half a carton's worth of chai lattes

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 350F (or 175C)

Place 6 egg whites in a bowl and beat until soft peaks

1 tablespoon at a time, add 1/2 cup of fluff, and beat until stiff peaks

In a separate bowl, put egg yolks, 1/2 cup of fluff, 1/2 tsp of references, and 1 tsp of cuddling. Beat until the characters are sick with love for each other.

Pour egg + fluff mixture into the pining mix, sift 1 1/2 cups of preferred writing style (I used Shakespearean-inspired) and 2 tsp of symbolism and diction, then fold to incorporate.

Transfer to a piping bag, and pipe the fluff component onto a baking tray, before baking for 15-18 minutes. Let it cool for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack and let it cool completely.

While the fluff component cools, in a clean bowl, place five egg yolks and 1/2 cup fluff in, then place the bowl over simmering water. Beat until the mix is thickened.

Take the bowl and let it cool. Afterwards, whisk in 300g of bagginshield.

In another bowl, put 1/2 cup angst, 1/4 cup fluff, 1 tsp cuddling together and beat until the characters are hopelessly pining for one another.

Combine the egg + fluff mixture with pining mixture by folding. Your mix should have Thorin using the most absurd metaphors to describe Bilbo, while also being so soft for him.

To combine, soak the fluff component in chai (which you obviously did not drink half of) and fill the bottom of the tray with them.

Spread your pining mixture on top, then proceed to alternate with your fluff component and pining mixture.

Let it rest in the refrigerator for a year until you discover it again, liked it, then decide you want to commit to making a short bagginshield fic.
