Ectober Day 3 - Mutant
Word Count: 1.1k Characters: Danny, Jazz Summary: Danny wants what he thinks he can’t have; Jazz offers a helping hand
Sitting on the floor with his back leaning against his bed, he allowed himself to cry – quietly. Each silent sob tugged the next one out of him, an unending chain that shook his shoulders and made his breath choppy and uneven, but still he made no sound.
Too long had this feeling been building up inside of him. Today had been the breaking point, acting happy and fine at dinner, as though everything were alright, when inside he was screaming for someone to notice that he, in fact, was not alright.
Was it fair to blame his family for not realizing, when he had resolutely kept up the mask that nothing was bothering him? Perhaps not. And part of him was upset with himself for being upset over something so stupid. That was the thing. Nothing bad had happened to him, not recently, not more than usual.
He bit his fist as he fought back a whine, a thin, reedy cry slipping out of him before he could stifle it. No matter. Everyone else was already asleep at this hour. No one would notice.
Less than a minute later there was a soft knock at his door. “Danny?”
Of course Jazz would be the exception.
He wanted to respond but his breathing was still choppy and outside his control. She opened the door regardless, slipping in quietly and closing the door behind her.
“Are you hurt?”
He shook his head and buried his face in his knees, arms crossed around them.
Rather than ask him what was wrong, she sat down next to him and wrapped her arm around his shoulders. Danny tried to explain, wanting to be understood, but there was a knot in his throat he couldn’t speak past, so he blindly groped for the brochure at his feet and thrust it at his sister instead.
“I can’t read in the dark. Is it alright if I turn on a lamp?”
Danny nodded, and when she left his side to flick on his bedside lamp he took the opportunity to wipe his eyes and take a deep, shuddering breath.
She returned to her spot next to him before she started to read, and Danny’s stomach felt like it was boiling. He stared fixedly at the floor, not wanting to see her face, oh god what if she laughed, it was such a stupid idea.
“I d-don’t know what I’m crying for. I just – I’ve had that for three weeks, well, you know, the assembly – and today I realized the application deadline has passed. It must have passed. And I missed my chance. Only, I wouldn’t have gone, not really. I couldn’t leave Sam and Tucker behind. But.” And he hated that his eyes welled up again. “But it was nice to imagine, that it could have been possible.”
“How do you know that the deadline has passed?”
“Does it matter? I can’t go!”
“Why not?”
“You know why.”
“Explain it to me.”
There was the obvious reason, the reason that was always present, like a toothache; and like a toothache, it hurt worse to touch it, so he didn’t, grabbing another, equally valid reason. “Because – because it’s a private school, and I’m not cut out for that. And Sam wouldn’t want me to go, she hates private schools; she proudly got kicked out of the one her parents sent her to.”
“Sam values uniqueness, and individuality,” Jazz countered. “And there’d be no shortage of that.”
“It’s too expensive.”
“They offer scholarships.” She passed the pamphlet back to him. He took it, reflexively. After three weeks, it was looking rather worse for wear, the way Danny kept folding and unfolding it, staring at the photos of smiling kids and ivy-covered buildings.
“I can’t leave Tucker and Sam, I don’t know what I’d do without them.” Of this point he was certain, if nothing else. “And if I go, then everyone’s going to know. It’s an open secret what this school is. You think it’s not going to raise eyebrows if, when a job application asks what high school I graduated from, I write ‘Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters’?”
The brochure crumpled under his clenched fist. Hastily, he smoothed it out, flattening the creases with care.
“And you don’t want to tell Mom and Dad.” Jazz apparently had no problem poking his metaphorical toothache.
“Yeah.” Danny looked at the glossy photos, and yearned. He’d never known he could want something as badly as he wanted to go to this school, where other kids were just as freakish as he was and he wouldn’t have to hide anymore. Where he could be accepted for all he was. He wanted it so badly it hurt, so badly that keeping his feelings hidden led him to be here, sobbing on his bedroom floor in the dark.
When they’d been called in for assembly three weeks ago, Danny had just appreciated the break from classwork. But when the representative from the school started talking about the wonderful opportunities available to students, the top-notch facilities, the quality education they could receive and all the doors it would open… then Danny allowed himself to imagine.
(Of course, after the assembly everyone kept darting glances at Brant Gosling, the only visibly mutant kid in their class. But as usual he didn’t let the attention ruffle his feathers – literally – and graciously repeated to anyone who asked that no, he would not be applying to Xavier’s; he was quite happy where he was at Casper. Danny didn’t think he would have been half as self-confident, in his place).
Jazz had gotten a lot better about not putting words in his mouth, and giving him time to collect his own thoughts. She did so now, sitting quietly and rubbing soothing circles on his back.
“It’s just… you need at least a master’s degree to get into the space program, and Xavier’s students actually have high acceptance rates into colleges.”
“It sounds like it doesn’t count against you on applications, then, to be a graduate. At least not everywhere.”
“Some people would say that’s just to fill diversity quotas.”
“Some people are bigoted assholes.”
Danny laughed outright at hearing Jazz swear, then sobered. “Mom and Dad…” he began tentatively. “We know they’re pro-mutant rights; they’ve said so.”
“That’s right.”
“But they’re anti-ghost.” Danny was once again on more certain ground.
“Danny…” Jazz hesitated. “I don’t want to tell you what you should do. You know I will support you no matter what. But it worries me to find you having a breakdown because you’ve been bottling everything up inside. This isn’t sustainable.”
“I know, I know; you’re right.” He ran a finger down the well-worn creases of the pamphlet. “At this point… It’s not that I don’t want to tell them. I just don’t know how,” he confessed.
Jazz beamed at him. “That’s okay. We can figure something out together.”

石田お寿司 12/9/21 stream translation Part 7
This is not the full translation of the stream. I only translated the parts I could understand & interpret or parts I found interesting/important. I’m still a beginner in Japanese, so the translations may not be accurate. If you want to repost, please repost at your own risk.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(t/n: ** means translation may not be accurate.)
I: Any other suggestion for the project?
C: I want you to create Choujin X first chapter with assistants.
I: I wanna see what’ll happen if I hire 100 people. I wanna try draw them with 100 assistants. It’ll probably take an excessive amount of time.
C: Having the viewers as your assistants.
I: That’s a bit interesting. A manga just for that. If it’s the side story’s one shot, then it’s okay. It’d look like a prank if I let you guys draw the real thing.
C: How about playing with Rod?
I: That’s a good idea.
*He’s talking about Saito Naoki again.
C: an overseas fan wrote that you’re gonna eat 1 million fan letters to celebrate 30, 000 subscribers.
I: It’s getting weird. Not 1 million fan letters. It’s head hunting 100 assistants and eating 10 years’ worth of fan letters.
C: How about becoming Fukuoka’s Banksy? (t/n: Banksy is a slang for people who do street arts.)
I: I wanna scribble on the wall too.
*Ishida trying to avoid people shooting at him while escaping from the place after killing the target.
I: They (the guards) remember who I am. Forget me, forget me. This is the opposite of unravel (TG op). Forget me 2x. Please forget me!
*Ishida trying to knock people out but ended up killing them.
I: Ah, I accidentally killed him. Whatever, people will one day die either way.
I: Reverse of unravel will be ravel. (TMI: According to Merriam-Webster, both unravel and ravel mean the same thing.)
I: The assistant head hunting suggestion is a good idea for the 30,000 commemoration. Goubaru probably can do it, though he’s working elsewhere. He’s working someplace else, where he gets sexually harassed. People touched his butt everyday. So pitiful. “I hate it!” (t/n: Ishida imitating Goubaru.) He receives body check from people.
Y****: Please do a career consultation.
I: I’m okay with that. Well, we’ve known each other for a year already. It’s because I was able to distinguish between you and S******. I’ve got to considerably know what you guys are like. Y****is in the theatre club, while S****** is the one who addresses Hikakin (a Japanese youtuber) as ‘that guy’. S****** has a sharp tongue.
I: Y****, where do you wanna go to in the future?
*Ishida reading this person’s comment.
I: You’re in the theatre club, but you wanna be a musician?! Lots of dreams you got there. You have so many dreams. You’re 16, 17 years old, right? You can just be anything, then. How about trying it out? Which one do you wanna do?
C: You can still become a musician even if you’re in the theatre club.
I: That’s true. Hoshino gen also did theatre before, if I’m not mistaken. I’m not sure though. It’s okay if you haven’t decided yet. There are still many possibilities for you.
(t/n: Hoshino Gen is an actor & singer)
C: Theatre requires high ability to express yourself, so I think it’s applicable to music as well.
I: That’s right. That applies to both. You can use the ability to express yourself that you’ve gained from theatre in music. Likewise, since music has various genre, I think it offers a lot of things to theatre. Just like you said. I think either way is good.
I: I think it’s just a matter of where you’ll end up eventually. It’s not like I’ve been writing manga all this while. I dreamed of becoming a mangaka because I didn’t want to get a job. I didn’t want to work, so I wanted to become a mangaka.
C: Well, you can learn anything.
I: Exactly.
C: I wanna quit being a member of society.
I: I didn’t say anything about that.
C: I’m 21, but I wanna be a high-schooler.
I: That’s impossible. Turning back time is impossible. Let’s focus on the real world.
C: Can I decide on my future dream based on impure motives?
I: I think it’s okay. It’s not a bad thing to have that kind of reasons. It’s okay to wanna be popular or wanting money. I think just having that is enough. But what happen after you achieve that is gonna be another story.
C: Sometimes, you can be happy just by drawing and playing games.
I: That is important.
C: My beloved dog that I’ve had for 14 years died recently. What should I do with this lingering affection that I have?
I: I understand how you feel. This is a difficult topic. I think it’s good to have a lingering affection. You can’t help but to have that kind of feelings when you lose a life. Time is the only way to heal wounds.
I: in the end, which one did Y**** choose? Did it end with him saying he’ll do his best? He’s having a trouble deciding whether to go to a vocational school or enter university. I see. Vocational school or university… You’ll spend 4 years in university and you need to manage your own time, so if you don’t have any confidence you’ll be able to manage yourself, it’ll be hard for you. But university is a good place for you if you wanna experience various things and obtain various knowledge.
* Ishida then continued giving a super long speech about Y****’s worries without knowing that he’s already slept.
C: Y**** already said good night.
I: Seriously?! He’s gone to bed?! You’re kidding me! Eh? He’s already sleeping?
*Scrolling for the guy’s comment.
I: “I feel much better now. Good night.” Hahaha. That guy’s gone to sleep. So irritating! What’s up with him? Even though I did my best to give him advice.
MM: On the contrary, don’t you have any worries, sensei?
I: MM’s here again. I’m gonna pin this.
I: My worries? I do have though, but I won’t tell you guys. It’s not really a worry, just something I should think about. Even if it was something serious, I’ll solve it by myself.
*Ishida continued answering the fans’ worries related to school and work. (t’n: I didn’t translate this part because I feel like I’d be disclosing personal info, so I refrained from doing that. I only translated if it’s related to manga or mangaka’s questions.)
C: My relative told me that it’s hard to make a living as a mangaka. As expected, am I dreaming too much? What do you think?
I: I don’t know. It depends on your ability and the effort you put in. Your relative might’ve seen your work and gave some comment. Even for me, people wanted me to quickly give up pursuing this path. I heard about it later though. So, no one knows what will happen in the future.
I: It’s hard to make a living as a mangaka? If it was before, I can understand that. On the contrary, this notion is now no longer applicable. Now, whatever jobs you do is hard. If you were to say you wanna work in a restaurant, people will be opposed to it, but you wanna be a chef no matter what. Anything you do is gonna be tough, after all. First of all, you’re allowed to choose what you wanna be no matter if it’s tough or whatever. And relatively, being a mangaka has a wide scope of jobs. It’s just that people don’t know about it. I think when there’s a will, there’s a way. If you wanna pursue that because you want it to be made into an anime or drama, then it might be difficult for you since that depends on luck.** Well, I’m able to manage my life better than other professions, especially in this period since I can just do my work at home.** Also, if you think it’s okay for you even if it’s tough, then I think you can just do whatever you wanna do. I’m not talking about you putting effort. Even if it’s tough, just by aiming for it is fun. Something like that. If you can live in such manner, then you can just go for it no matter if it’s tough or not.
C: I don’t wanna be a mangaka. I just wanna write manga.
I: That’s good. Let’s write one.
*He continued giving advice to fans.

All of the advice I’m going to give you in this post comes from my personal experience. If you know me in real life, or at least knew me through high school, you’d know I’m one of the most indecisive people to ever exist. During my junior and senior year, I went through this huge existential crisis and researched online about pretty much every major known to humankind, and I still couldn’t make up my mind. I went from considering an Arts-related majors, Law, Business, etc, to finally deciding on Engineering, and I’m going to tell you how I did it, and how I managed to stick to this decision and feel confident about it!
Know what you’re going through is perfectly normal
This is not practical advice, but I still wanted to put it on top of the list because I know how much distress this topic can cause. When everyone else around you seems to know exactly what they want to do with their lives, this can only mean you must be immature and not ready for university, right? Nope. Trust me, it doesn’t mean anything. Seventeen-year-olds aren’t supposed to know what they want to do with the rest of their lives, and even the ones who tell themselves they do, they are very likely to change opinions in the long run. The point is, you are not supposed to be sure of anything right now. Your major will allow you to understand in which area you’d like to work with in the future, not your exact career path. Which brings me to my next advice to keep in mind: once you decide on a major, it won’t define the rest of your life.
It isn’t a final decision
I’m enrolling for Aerospace Engineering at university this fall, but I’ve read countless stories of people who ended the course and ended up working with Finance. I also know of many Fashion designers who were originally Architecture students. The point is, despite the name slapped on the page of your major of interest, what really matters are the skills you are learning. Even though, yes, an Aerospace Engineering student will most likely want to work as an Aerospace Engineer, they will have learned many other useful skills and will be able to apply them in different career paths, if they choose to do so. This same principle applies to most majors, like English, Business, and so on (I say most because there are courses like Medicine that are rather specific on career path). Therefore, have a look through university websites and see what the alumni of your majors of interests are working on, to understand the “range” of the major.
Know your priorities
Your major doesn’t have to be the one thing you love doing above anything else, despite what people say. I’m not saying you should choose it based on which one has a higher starting salary, because I don’t think it’s right, but it’s just that sometimes, people get too obsessed with finding “their true call”. Enjoying doing what you do it’s enough and, after all, you won’t get all of your happiness in life from your career choice. If you don’t find your “true call” right now, it’s perfectly fine. Realistically, most people don’t, and they still find other ways to fulfill their life through things like hobbies, volunteering, sports, and so on, which is great. Whether or not your major is your life vocation won’t dictate if you will be happy or not. If you think you managed to find it, that’s great! But again, don’t obsess over it.
Pros and cons list
For the first practical tip, write down all of the majors that interest you, and write all the pros and cons of choosing them. It can include anything, from the location of the universities around you that offer the major, to the actual things you like and dislike about the classes you’d be taking. This will give you an overview of what major seems more “worth it” to you, despite their cons.
Dig deeper
Find out the exact classes you’d be expected to take, projects and so on. Think if it is something you would feel motivated enough to go through, something you would enjoy in the long run, or something you’re good at. The major “summaries” universities offer on their websites, while often helpful, can also be very vague and have the aim of sounding more charming to prospective students. Therefore, looking through the syllabus and other more detailed pages can be very clarifying.
Look for different opinions
When trying to make my own decision, I listened to a lot of different people. They go from teachers to people on Youtube - all kinds of opinions mattered to me. The careers counselor in my school gave me a broad idea of the majors I was interested in, other majors that I hadn’t considered before, and her opinions based on her experiences hearing from alumni who were already going through college/had graduated. I also talked with people online and in real life who were already going through the courses I was considering - what is it like? Do you enjoy it? What are the ups and downs of it?
I mentioned watching Youtube videos, which can be very helpful, but often a bit misleading as well. Through experience, I’ve learned that it’s good to hear the opinions of multiple people, because the number of frustrated graduates making videos about their majors is overwhelming. While it’s important to hear their opinions and arguments for a reality check, sometimes listening to a positive experience regarding the same major is just as important. So, if you come across a negative video on something you’re interested about, don’t feel too discouraged!
Consider taking a break
If this is a decision you’re not ready to make just yet, consider taking a semester or year off. I think the belief that everyone should be graduated by a certain age otherwise they won’t be successful is complete nonsense. All over the world, some students spend years after high school studying to pass a certain university exams, others start university right away, while others need a little more time figuring things out. Everyone is different, and that’s completely fine. You can spend your break trying to find out more about your courses of interest, through maybe taking open course classes, or gaining experience through some kind of internship. Either way, if you don’t feel confident, know you don’t need to rush!
-
I went through a really rough time trying to figure out these things for myself, but again, that doesn't mean I'm completely sure of what I want to do with the rest of my life. I learned that, sometimes, you need to figure things out as you go! Overall, I hoped I managed to ease someone's anxiety and helped them find something useful.
Good luck! 💗✨

Notwithstanding, it isn't generally the situation. Consequently, while choosing the best beauty parlor, you shouldn't think about a salon with an excessive number of present day pleasantries yet rather you ought to pick a salon that offers best administrations. You likewise need to consider a salon that has all around experienced staff.
 Kinds of Hair Salon Services
In decades past, beauty parlor administrations were essentially saved for ladies, since they are normally more worried about their appearance than men. These days in any case, even men have gotten progressively cognizant about their own preparing, in this way such administrations likewise apply to men. There are various kinds of beauty parlor administrations, which are regularly offered based on singular inclinations. Further, these administrations have expanded throughout the years, with the end goal that most salons have become a one-stop look though types of magnificence couldn't care less. In this article, various sorts of beauty parlor administrations have been talked about in detail. The fundamental administrations offered in beauty parlors are hair styling and shading. Great hairdos can significantly improve a people whole look, along these lines most salons have hairdressers explicitly for this reason. There is a wide scope of hairdos to look over, which regularly rely upon different factors, for example, the state of one's face and hair length. It is along these lines a matter of styling hair, however salon experts likewise guarantee that such styles are novel to every individual. They experience the means of washing it, putting on conditioner, hair gels, hair splashes and numerous other hair items attempting to get their ideal look. When searching for a top boutique, you will discover there are numerous approaches to do this, for example, asking individuals you are near. Companions, family members, and neighbors will have the option to reveal to you data for you about the salons they have utilized and beauticians they like. You can even ask somebody who you have never met that has a pleasant hairdo that you might want to have yourself. A great many people will experience no difficulty revealing to you where they get their hair style in light of the fact that by asking them you are offering them a commendation.
Provide the best hair style in our barbar shop
It is said that our hair is our delegated wonder and we invest heavily in taking great consideration of our hair, particularly the young ladies. Finding a decent salon is a lot of like finding the correct hair item for you. There is no other path however to do the experimentation test. That is in the event that you don't care for a specific boutique, at that point you need to search for another until you will at long last locate the ideal beauty parlor for you. However, don't surrender on the grounds that there are a few things that you can do that will assist you with finding the correct beauty parlor for you.
Tips on the most proficient method to make your correct beauty
You can ask your companions, family, associates and even all out outsiders for a referral. Verbal exchange is now and again the best referral yet observe that what works for your loved ones probably won't work for you. On your first visit to a specific salon, request a conference first. A meeting permits you to "learn about" a beauty parlor before making a pledge to a beautician that you may lament. During a discussion, you can watch the various methods that the staff at the salon is utilizing and how they connect with their clients. An interview likewise allows you to vocalize what you need and get criticism from an expert, all before the primary cut is made. Most beauty parlors additionally have a portfolio that you can glance through of when pictures, which can give you a feeling of what sort of work do.
What's The Best Hair Salon Shampoo Brand?
here's been numerous hair care marks that guarantee to be "Salon Exclusive" yet as a rule every selective brand will in general begin in stylists (the beautician making all deals and brand assembling yet not the benefit from the items) and afterward at last selling out into any retail outlet they can get it into or even grocery stores. So whats a genuine salon brand and what do beauty parlors think about items in there salons. I have been in styling more than 20 years and I have seen a variety of brands coming to showcase the most recent deals/benefit plans to get through my salon entryway promising to cause restrictive items in the event that I to prescribe the organization's items to my clients.
What Makes An Excellent Hair Salon?
Regardless of whether you are hoping to have your hair styled, hued or trim, you will expect the best assistance conveyance unfailingly. This implies you need to pick a beauty parlor that can possibly convey administrations past your desires for an upbeat you after each salon visit. Just a magnificent salon can meet and outperform your desires in polished skill. What hence are the segments of a decent beauty parlor? The experience - Professional beauticians are not in the field to step into different territories of intrigue, they put forth a valiant effort and devote their entire lives to the vocation. Through long stretches of understanding, you can make certain to get the best hair medicines, shading, style and trim from these experts. A decent salon will even have the cosmetologists or beauticians tried to consummate their aptitude in administration conveyance. Experience is a decent ideals.
Effective Hair Salon Design and Equipment
During these cutting edge times, a beauty parlor is simply not an area to have your hair styled or perhaps complete your finger nails. On account of the tight rivalry in this industry directly, it is no big surprise a few rising ones are concocting salon structure inventive turns of events, along with pondering one of a kind consideration to attract unquestionably more customers. Clearly, since this sort of business is fixated on allure, salon style and configuration is vital. It's the creative estimation of the site that will establish a connection just as a decent early introduction on possible customers. This magnificence and beauty parlor configuration is that "one significant component" which will pull individuals closer and make them need to step into this particular one as opposed to numerous others.

So you want to be a doctor...
Congratulations on even thinking about this career path! It is undoubtedly a noble one, and one which will be very rewarding. You probably love science, you probably already work super hard at school, and you’ve probably got your own personal motivation that I will never properly understand. All of these are admirable, and I know I was in your position not too long ago.
Over the next few years, and probably over the last number of years, you will have some life experiences that will be truly incredible. These experiences will be inextricably linked to your career choice, and you should be so grateful to have them. My own volunteering in my community, with the FRIENDS group, is probably the most formative experience of my life. It is definitely what inspired me most to be a doctor, and I miss it to this day. More recently, I have got to see incredible doctors at work, both in the UK and US. They are such incredible communicators, saving and changing lives every single day – I am overwhelmed with gratitude and I don’t doubt that these experiences will change your life for the better.
But today, we have to be realistic, so here is the rest of what the last three (give or take) years have taught me about trying to be a doctor…
You almost certainly can do it.
I did my GCSEs at a school where not many people do medicine, and the ones who do are the ‘geniuses’ who don’t know what anything short of an A* looks like. You should all know that I am not one of these geniuses, at all. In fact, I barely remember what an A* looks like. So, as you may expect, when I announced my career plans to my fifth-year careers teacher, she told me that I ‘wasn’t academic enough’ for medicine and would never get to the interview stage of the process, so I’d be better off trying something else. My predicted GCSE grades were fairly unremarkable; 2A* 6A 2B. However, I am far too stubborn to listen to any career’s teacher, so I did try. I tried far too hard and did unexpectedly well at GCSE. Two years on, I am in a fairly similar academic dilemma; but this time I have a firmly accepted offer to study medicine. It’s all about progress. So, what I’m really trying to say is that if I can get a medicine offer, you can too. And please don’t listen to careers advisors who try to tell you otherwise.
Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.
It’s almost exam season, and you’re going to work so hard and do so well, whatever stage you’re at. After exam time is summer time, and that’s when you’ll have time to have a really good think about what you’re getting yourself into, and why. (I know and fully understand I am only an upper 6thand have no right to talk about medicine as a degree or career – just the application).
Using my own personal experiences, here is what the application process was like for me…
SCHOOLS
Yes, this is a bizarre one. But essentially, I changed schools for medicine. I was THAT committed to the cause. And I promise the application process will still leave you feeling like you want to study anything but medicine.
Personally, I wasn’t too torn up about leaving, but it can be a really big deal. Certain courses require certain A Levels – and for the courses I wanted to apply to I really couldn’t have stayed. This isn’t make-or-break stuff, but it’s not something I gave much thought to until it was almost too late.
GCSEs
These are important exams. Most medical schools will either rank them standalone or on a point system before they interview you. You should definitely study. These are also probably the last exams you’ll sit at school where your hard work is almost guaranteed to pay off – so you’re better off putting in the work now. Better GCSEs would have made my sixth form experience infinitely easier, and worse ones could have made it far more difficult. They are not, however, an ultimatum. They do not define you or your ability to be a doctor.
VOLUNTEERING AND WORK EXPERIENCE
If you’re volunteering to get into medicine you’re doing it wrong. But volunteering for the good of your community and for the good of others, even for the sheer experience of it, is probably one of the greatest things you can ever do. Start as early as you can, and put in all the hours you can, while you can. Some experiences won’t be brilliant, but they’ll be worth it (and some medical schools need it.)
As I mentioned earlier, work experience is incredible, but it can be difficult to organise. Start contacting doctors and healthcare professionals you know as soon as you can. They were very accommodating to me – they’ve all been where we are. It can also be quite consuming, while my friends were making big money in retail, or with their talents (sailing and music namely) I was making tea in hospitals, unpaid. Again, this isn’t a big deal at all, it’s just not something I would ever have considered.
OPEN DAYS
Medicine isn’t the kind of vocation that you can decide to just stay at home to study. You need to accept that if you live in Northern Ireland, ¾ of your choices will not be in Northern Ireland. I am a wee bit apprehensive and so I spent a great deal of my sixth form experience travelling up and down the country, visiting all sorts of medical schools I was thinking about applying to. This has clear financial implications, and I completely understand that it is not accessible for everyone. It’s definitely not a necessity, but its something I’m really glad I did.
Not all medicine courses are the same, not all cities are the same. You’ll be spending five or six years of your life at these Universities, so you’re better to do your research on them rather than wasting a space on your application.
AS LEVELS
Lower Sixth was the hardest year of my school career. I was in a new school (which I love), studying new subjects (which I love), and yet I was really struggling. All of the medical schools I was applying to specified 4 AS levels in their entry requirements – so it was never going to be a fun year. Looking back, I don’t know how I did it. It was far more to handle than upper sixth has been. Study subjects you love, and just accept now that you will quickly stop loving them – especially chemistry. Try to balance a personal life too, because that only gets more difficult with time. In Lower Sixth, I was in a relationship, kept up my volunteering, and even had a job until Christmas. Your academic attainment will probably not be what it was previously, but that’s okay, it will come in time. Surround yourself with all the support you can, get a library membership and use it. Buy textbooks and get a tutor if you need to – again I know this has its financial implications. And please know that you will survive the year.
UKCAT
This is where the shit really hit the fan for me. It will make your A levels look like P5 English. My school were fairly supportive, and even then, I was still left largely to my own devices. I sat mine fairly early, and I’m so glad I did, because it really does have the potential to ruin your summer. Allow a solid three weeks to cram, there are brilliant resources online, and some books available. Again, if your financial situation allows, there is an amazing course that Kaplan run every weekend through the summer and it boosted my score significantly.
There is also the BMAT that certain universities require, I didn’t sit this myself but it’s supposed to be more academic based than the UKCAT. It’s also sat on a single date in October, by which stage you have already applied, and know your UKCAT score and how it sits compared with the average. I wasn’t willing to take the risk and didn’t like the uncertainty, but it is entirely personal choice.
PERSONAL STATEMENT
Do yourself a favour and write this in June. I am a firm believer that lower sixth exams finish early for a 4000-character long reason. I am one of the lucky ones and wrote my personal statement in one draft. There aren’t many people in my position, and I am well aware of how many people were so fed up and drained by this following AS Levels. But it’s so much easier to handle then than it ever could be in September. It’s also not nearly as long as you think it’s going to be – and that just makes everything harder.
UCAS
I sent away my UCAS application on Monday, 10thSeptember 2018. By that Thursday, I had received my first offer to study Genetics at Glasgow. Without meaning to sound arrogant, I could probably have got five non-medicine offers back within the week. But applying to medicine was a completely different ball game. My final ‘UCAS Application Status Notification’ email came on Wednesday 3rdApril 2019. Just a week short of seven months later. It was a rejection from a medical school. My third rejection.
Those UCAS emails give you the sort of fear that isn’t really comparable to anything else. The feeling of being rejected from a University who has met you, spoken to you, and marked your personality as unworthy, seems very personal. It does hurt, but no more than any fall out or heartbreak would. It just hurts differently because it’s a whole institution that has rejected you. This isn’t pleasant, but it is a reality for the majority of applicants and offer holders. So, if it does happen to you, just know you’re not alone.
INTERVIEW
I was very naïve going into the interview stage. Of my four choices, I had three interviews, within three consecutive weeks. I have one offer. Two of the interview processes were friendly, and they were manageable. The third was a truly awful experience. Thus, I think it’s fair to say that the interview process is variable. All of my interviews were in January, right in the rush of A Level work, I even had my attendance reported because of them. MMIs themselves can be fun, especially with relatively supportive examiners. But there is so much preparation required for a medicine MMI and the reality is that you can place in the top 20% of one University and the bottom 20% of another with very similar interviews. They take their toll on you, and are physically exhausted, between travelling, early mornings and the workload of the preparation. It is also, I believe, fair to say, that it can be quite emotionally destructive to have your personality scored and analysed in such a manner.
A LEVELS
Only when applying to medicine do a-levels feel like an after-thought. At this stage, I feel like I have been put through the ringer by this application, and to even get an offer has been more than I ever thought I was capable of. But you do need the 3As, in some of the hardest subjects and exams that boards can write. Its easy enough to forget that, but it is an immense amount of pressure, and it is still my present.
So you want to be a doctor…
I am so grateful to have got this far with my medicine application, and I do genuinely hope I get to study it in September.
There is so little accessible information regarding the details of the process and how to approach it without losing your head over it. I don’t think anyone has cracked it yet, and if they have I wish they’d write a post about it instead of this one.
Ultimately, you have to take care of yourself first. It’s what your doctor would tell you to do. You are more important than any and every stage of this process, and your own mental and physical health should come before every career choice you make. I hope to see you on the ward someday! But even more than that, I hope you get to be everything you aspire to be, whether you decide medicine is for you or not.

Meet: Emily Claire Schmitt
Tumblr media
EMILY CLAIRE SCHMITT is a NYC-based playwright. (www.emilyclaireschmitt.com and Twitter: @Eclaire082)
CATHOLIC ARTIST CONNECTION (CAC): What brought you to NYC?
EMILY CLAIRE SCHMITT (ECS): I'm originally from Cincinnati, Ohio and I did my undergrad at Saint Mary's College in Indiana.  I always hoped to move to New York and I was fortunate that a few things fell into place for me when I graduated.  I was accepted into the New School for Drama's MFA program directly from undergrad.  I had applied to schools all over the country, and this happened to be both my top choice and only acceptance letter.  My college boyfriend's family is from Staten Island, so he moved back home and we were able to stay together.  Now that boyfriend is my husband, so I'm here to stay.
CAC: What do you see as your personal mission as a Catholic working in the arts?
ECS: First off, I love this question.  I think about this a lot, and I always try to pray a bit before I start writing, even if what I'm working on isn't an overtly religious piece.  I believe that God wants to be present with us as we grapple with the world and, while I don't let religious doctrines limit the content of my writing, my writing is always filtered through a worldview that God exists.
A great deal of my art is critical of the institutional Church, but I'm still very insistent that I am a Catholic writer, as opposed to a formerly Catholic writer. There is a fundamental difference between someone who critiques from within and someone who has left the Church and is describing the experience that caused them to leave.  This distinction is supremely important to me.
I believe my vocation as a writer is to be a tool for God to express Themself in the world.  Sometimes this means representing the beauty of God's world, but more often than not it means shining light on that which is not in alignment with the Divine, whether within secular society or within the Church.  I hope that my work makes both religious and secular people uncomfortable.  I hope it makes them wonder what God thinks about them.
CAC: Where have you found support in the Church for your vocation as an artist?
ECS: I've been extremely fortunate to have made great connections with fellow Catholics in the arts.  I've worked with Xavier Theatre and Film, a Jesuit theater company, and they produced a showcase of my play "The Chalice" at the Stonewall Inn.  This was one of the highlights of my career thus far, an intersection of the Catholic and secular world that was truly fulfilling.
CAC: Where have you found support among your fellow artists for your Catholic faith?
ECS: It's a mixed bag.  Grad school was not a positive experience for me in terms of acceptance. After 16 years of Catholic education, I was suddenly in a secular world and I made a lot of mistakes in terms of how I presented myself.  I was wrestling with my faith privately, but fiercely defending it publicly, which is never a good tactic.  I didn't feel safe.  I no longer work with anyone from grad school, and that's best for all of us.
However, post graduation I have really found an artistic community with people of all faiths.  I have frequent collaborators who are non-Catholic Christians, members of other faiths, atheists, and agnostics.  I've found a particular home with The Skeleton Rep, a theater company that focuses on "building modern myth."  My religious beliefs really mesh with their interests, despite being a completely secular company.  I am currently developing a musical with them.
CAC: How can the Church be more welcoming to artists?
ECS: Stop policing our content.  The vocation of an artist is to observe, critique, and respond.  It is not the vocation of the artist to simply listen and accept doctrine without question.  This means that there is an essential tension between the work of being an artist and the work of being a practicing Catholic.
As an artist, I don't have the luxury of keeping my disagreements with the Church private. I promise I'm listening and it's possible to change my mind. Please be patient with me.
CAC: How can the artistic world be more welcoming to artists of faith?
ECS: I think this is a difficult question because in most of the instances where people have been unwelcoming to me, it's because they have been hurt in some serious way by the Church.  It's taken me a long time to accept that, while I have not personally hurt them, I am part of an institution that has and it's not unreasonable for them to ask me to answer for that.
I try to be clear about my beliefs and about why I have chosen to remain in the Church.  I also try to articulate how I'm striving to make the Church better, while remaining firm in my support of Her.  I have to be both gentle and unafraid about how and why I disagree with the secular world as well.  Once again, I promise I'm listening and it's possible to change my mind.  Please be patient with me.
CAC: Where in NYC do you regularly find spiritual fulfillment?
ECS: I'm a bit of a parish hopper.  When I first came to NYC I fell in love with Saint Francis Xavier, near Union Square.  Their Young Adults Group was a great community for me, but after moving to Brooklyn and back I'm not as involved as I once was.  I've become more interested in traditional, more formal, liturgies. Saint Joseph of Yorkville is a beautiful neighborhood parish that has a highly reverent modern mass.  There are so many families with children there, it gives me great hope.  And the pastor is the man who reported on McCarrick so that's no small thing.... I like a priest I can respect, for obvious reasons.
When I'm feeling in particular need of deep ritual, I do love a Latin Mass. Saint Agnes by Grand Central is a great place to go for that.
CAC: Where in NYC do you regularly find artistic fulfillment?
ECS: I already mentioned The Skeleton Rep, but one thing they do which I love are monthly artist salons.  Artists will get together, drink wine, and read new work, either a full play or short plays based on a prompt.  There is no formal feedback, just a chance for the writer to hear her play.  And afterwards we have a party.
CAC: How have you found or built community as a Catholic artist living in NYC?
ECS: Connecting with Brother Joe Hoover at Xavier Theater has really connected me with a great community of Catholic artists.  He has a way of making connections and bringing together a dynamic and diverse group of people with a huge variety of perspectives on the faith.  If you ever get the chance to work with them I highly recommend it.  Joe is a fantastic playwright and actor in his own right.
CAC: What is your daily spiritual practice?
ECS: I wish I had a better one...  I pray every day before I write.  My husband and I pray together before meals.  Recently, we've been doing a daily reflection before bed.  It's just one of those Little Blue Books you pick up from your parish during Advent, but it's been great.
CAC: What is your daily artistic practice? And what are your recommendations to other artists for practicing their craft daily?
ECS: I try to write for an hour every morning after working out and before leaving for work. This is really my sacred time: after my husband leaves, freshly showered, and place to myself.  It's short but it's extremely important.  And I can't stress enough the value of praying before you write.
CAC: Describe a recent day in which you were most completely living out your vocation as an artist. What happened, and what brought you the most joy?
ECS: The most recent Skeleton Rep salon was on New Year's Eve.  I wrote a short piece for the event which spoke of my Catholic faith and it's relationship to the mission of the company.  Afterwards, another artist present pulled me aside to talk about how he is a Catholic as well but had stopped going to Church.  He was interested in going back, so we spent a long time talking about why I felt it was important for young Catholic artists to be in the faith and engage with it from the inside.  The whole conversation was so fulfilling for me.
CAC: You actually live in NYC? How!?
ECS: I need to be completely up front and say that I have been incredibly privileged in terms of financial support from my family.  This is something we do not talk about enough in the arts.  My parents paid my rent and my tuition while I was in school and I am debt-free.  I'm also married to someone with a traditional career who contributes the majority of our income.  I am so incredibly fortunate it's not even funny.
CAC: But seriously, how do you make a living in NYC?
ECS: Even with the financial support, I do have a full-time day job.  I don't know how anyone would make rent or buy groceries without one.  I work in social media marketing, which is great because it's mostly all remote.  I've also been nannying for my cousin's baby so making that sweet side cash.
It's a lot of work, and keeping my passion afloat on top if it, and making sure it remains my focus rather than just a "hobby" is a constant battle.
CAC: How much would you suggest artists moving to NYC budget for their first year?
ECS: I can't give a great answer to this, because it's so varied and I was in school when I started.  But consider that your monthly rent is likely to be over 1K no matter where you live.
CAC: What other practical resources would you recommend to a Catholic artist living in NYC?
ECS: I can't recommend enough reaching out to Xavier Theater for professional connections.  In terms of headshots, Joe Loper is a former classmate of mine who does a great job and is very reasonable. http://joeloper.com/
CAC: What are your top 3 pieces of advice for Catholic artists moving to NYC?
ECS: 1.) Don't rush finding your people.  It's a big city and it takes time.
2.) Exercise.
3.) Go to confession.  Why make art with sin on your soul?

Is there harmony?
The two persons that really make a mark in my life during the class discussions is Pat Gelsinger balancing his life as a professional, church leader, husband, and father, and a servant of the Lord and Suze Orman’s dedication in providing financial guidance to those who are in need and stepping out of the male-dominated industry in America. With their life works, it helps me to evaluate my life if there is harmony in things that I do or am I somehow sacrificing some of them to take more care of the others.
Suze Orman’s Laws of Money provided an in-depth knowledge of how can I better improve my finances, these five rules has been an additional consideration and part of my thinking process when I make a decision about my money and investments:
TRUTH creates money, LIE destroys it
You have to look at what you have and not what you had
You have got to do what is right for you and not for your money
You have to invest in the known and not in the unknown
You have to remember that money has no power of its own.
Suze Orman provided brief key points on every rule and provided practical examples, the explanation and stories she shared while explaining are very relatable, no wonder why she is one of the best financial advisors. And just like any of us, she did not start at the top of the industry, she worked as a waitress serving Steve Jobs, and she rose to the occasion and become one of the best. Her story, more than her advice, is already proof that she is a woman of experience, and her recommendations were based on a true and realistic perspective.
On the other hand, Pat Gelsinger flawlessly balanced all his hats as a professional, a family man, and a servant of the Lord. I admire the way he discerns on every major decision he has to make and the courage he has to shift his ways from being the Sunday boy who’s everyone’s mothers want their daughters to marry to an actual Sunday servant who’s doing everything he can to be of service to the Lord who has provided him everything.  His vision of what he wanted to do makes it a little bit easier for him to course through his career. I remember one of the stories he mentioned, he was asked by one of his bosses in Intel if he wanted to fly the jet or just the simulator, and then that question makes it clear to him that HE WANTED TO FLY THE JET.
Tumblr media
During one of the discussions, we have been shown a matrix about work, leisure, and integration. Explaining what is the different perspectives on how we see these three in our lives right now. Looking at work as job, career, or vocation, at leisure as amusement, utility, or contemplation, and at integration as gratification, achievements, or integrity.  Now that I have an understanding of where am I on the matrix on having a great harmony between my different roles and guidance on how to properly handle my finances, the challenge is for me to improve my status on these key points. The challenge is for me to apply these things and considerations in order for me to achieve harmony, but this is not a one-shot thing, this is a process that I need to undergo, a process I need to feel, and a process I need to grasp as I continue living my life. As I course through, I pray that God will enable me to continuously glorify Him through my works as a professional and that I will be able to do the works for His greater glory.

Hi! I completely agree with your post on the whole Ovi/Sid/White House thing, and it irks me when people are refusing to hold Ovi accountable or claim he's got no choice when that's clearly not true. Sid and Ovi (and both teams) need to be held accountable. But I don't get why you brought up Holtby and kinda implied he's a part of this whole thing too? Because unlike a lot of the people involved in this, he's been a vocal ally and his wife is extremely anti-Trump/pro-LGBTQ+. So in my - (1/2)
- perspective, it seems like until Holtby decides whether he's going or not, we can't really claim that he's supporting this administration and like, 'call him out'? [Also the purpose of this is just to have a discussion! I want to talk to more people and learn more and have like, informed opinions, so if any part of this sounded like I was attacking you or anything please know I didn't mean it! Thanks! :) ]
First, I appreciate you clarifying that last bit because I got snared into being a sitting duck for some folks’ impotent rage by believing they actually wanted a discussion lol.
The Holtby/Cup/Pride issue is totally separate, just to make that clear! If anything I probably overexplained myself but it’s all here. I still shudder when I look at that pic. Please as always remember I’m an older queer person who grew up terrified of attending hockey games because of the culture that persists to this day, and NHL hockey has no place at a pride parade.
But as far as Holtby’s implication in the WH visit, it’s only the same as I apply to any player who has hugely problematic players in their locker rooms that they actively support and are close with. As was the case with Pens players that we know are liberal or at the very least left-leaning, their individual merit had to sit by the wayside while the larger problem of their team and the league was brought to debate.
Individual merits in a case like this one only apply very, very occasionally and usually only to players of color who cannot avoid being visibly different and therefore treated and questioned more aggressively by the media. These guys genuinely live a situation only they can all speak to. It’s not my business or right to comment on.
Though I will call out white fans who token Oshie’s Ojibwe heritage to excuse him any personal responsibility. That’s a criticism of how white and problematic this fanbase is rather than of Oshie himself, though I dislike some of his choices anyway.
When white straight cis pro athletes make great gestures toward being humane and inclusive, it is always worth a fan bearing in mind that being white cis straight and especially male means that the word performative has to be applied. We whites are pretty flop about being progressive without wanting kudos or doing anything for entirely selfless means. We’re often extremely problematic when the issue actually involves us personally.
So outside of this latest issue I’ve always given Holtby a thumbs up for being gay friendly, like I have the other NHLers who do the same. But I don’t elevate them an inch higher than neutral or more politically silent players because these gestures are simply that: gestures. No investment is being made to effect actual change for anyone. Too often it’s based on the fact that selfishly, gay rights happens to affect someone close to them. Not a bad reason per se, but still not deserving of calling someone a “gay icon”. There are no gay icons in pro hockey, except jokingly. Right now is not the time to be using that joke though.
(Side note that one of the few times I will actually say I was impressed was when Malkin made his statement about being fine with gay team mates during news of the Sochi ban. I’m not taking that and running with it to idolize him, but that was a statement that did involve at least an element of risk on his part.)
It’s always worth anyone stepping up and reminding fellow fans not to reward these men and never to elevate them above a similarly privileged cis man in any vocation. Holtby is not a minority or oppressed and if his personal politics weighed as heavily as fans think they do then there are ways for him to make that clear. Not by holding a rabid Putin supporter as one of his closest buddies and pretending it just doesn’t come up and he turns away every time the fact comes up in the media and his own organization’s meeting rooms.
Bearing in mind that the most a player will ever do to indicate disapproval of another team mate is to dodge discussing them or interacting with them. And this happens a lot. That kind of silent protest counts for something, but still very little.
When you consider what openly gay men experience in North American hockey, all of these gestures count for very little.
This is exactly how I view every single other white player in this league. I don’t give them an easy out and I enjoy them as players on (har har) very thin ice.
Caps fans can slowly go back to - more shrewdly - supporting whoever they want, and I’ll go right back to giving Holtby that thumbs up when he crosses my dash. After an protest takes place this summer equal to what happened with the Penguins.

NINE NOBLE VIRTUES
Nine Noble Virtues
The Odinic Rite lists the 9 Noble Virtues as Courage, Truth, Honor, Fidelity, Discipline, Hospitality, Industriousness, Self-Reliance, and Perseverance.
It would be hard to get much argument on any of these values from anyone. They simply and briefly encapsulate the broad wisdom of our Gods and ancestors.
In virtually every statement of values applied to Asatru, Courage is listed first. As Stephen McNallen has said, courage and bravery are perhaps the values which the Vikings are best known for. However, despite our history, few of us face such turmoil as a literal battle for ones life. In fact, I believe it might be easier to manifest courage in such a situation than to do so in the many smaller day to day occurrences in which courage is called for.
The most common of these occurrences for modern Pagans, is the courage to acknowledge and live ones beliefs. It is also, sadly, the one that we most often fail at. While we may often be full of the type of courage that would lead us to face a shield wall, many of us quake at the thought of the topic of religion coming up at the office or a friend asking what church we attend. We won't offer easy answers, but we ask this: if you toast the courage of your ancestors to fight and die for what they believed in, can you trade away your religious identity for a higher salary or social acceptance?
In an essay on values there is also the question of moral courage. The way of Tyr is difficult to lose ones hand for ones beliefs but, Tyr thought the price worth paying. In a million ways modern society challenges our values, not just as Asatruar who are estranged from mainstream religious practice, but for religious people in an increasingly not just secular, but anti-religious culture. Values are also not in favor in modern society. Breaking or getting around the rules is encouraged to get ahead. Living honorably is simply too inconvenient. I think most people, Asatru or otherwise, find this repugnant, but the only way to change it is to have the courage to refuse to take part in it.
The second virtue, that of Truth, is the one that most led our kindred to embrace the Odinic Rite's statement of values as our own. Early in our discussions, we decided that no matter what values we chose to hold out as our own, truth must be among them. It is a word that holds so much in its definition, and includes such a wide variety of moral and philosophical beliefs that we were all drawn to it as a simple statement of what we
At least one of the reasons we wanted to adopt it was the simple issue of honesty. As Bill Dwinnels said at a recent sumbel while toasting truth and honesty: if you don't want people to know about something, don't do it. Truth, in the sense of honesty, is essential to personal honor and also to any system or morality that is not based on rigid legalism. If one is to uphold an honor code, one must be brutally honest with oneself and with others.
Truth is also the Truth that comes with a capital T, the kind of Truth that one talks about in terms of religion or morality.
It's common to talk of different peoples having different "truths," but it's equally important to remember that while we acknowledge that each person or people has their own belief as to what Truth is or where to find it, there finally is a single Truth. This is not the Truth as we believe it, but ultimate Truth. While we may respect other people's truths and seek our own, we must never forget our search for The Truth.
Like the Holy Grail of Christian legend, it may never be ours to reach, but when we cease to search we
Honor is the basis for the entire Asatru moral rationale. If anything comes out in the Eddas and Sagas it is that without honor we are nothing. We remember two types of peoples from ancient times: those whose honor was so clean that they shine as examples to us and those who were so without honor that their names are cursed a thousand years after they lived.
Good Asatruar should always strive to be among the former.
However, honor is not mere reputation. Honor is an internal force whose outward manifestation is reputation.
Internal honor is the sacred moral compass that each Asatruar and God should hold dear.
It is the inner dwelling at peace which comes from living in accordance with ones beliefs and with ones knowledge of the Truth of what one is doing.
It is something deeply personal and heartfelt, almost akin to an emotion. It's a knowing that what one is doing is right and decent and correct.
In many ways while the most important of all the virtues it is also the most ephemeral in terms of description. It is all the other virtues rolled together and then still more.
The best way I have found to describe honor is that if you are truly living with honor, you will have no regrets about what you have done with your life.
Fidelity is a word that is far too often defined by it's narrow use in terms of marital fidelity.
By the dictionary it simply means being faithful to someone or something. In marriage this means being true to ones vows and partner, and this has been narrowly defined as limiting ones sexual experience to ones spouse.
While I have found this to be great practical advice, many treat fidelity as if there were no other ways in which one could be faithful or
For we Asatruar fidelity is most important in terms of our faith and troth to the Gods.
We must remain true to the Aesir and Vanir and to our kinsmen. Like marriage, Profession (the rite in which one enters the Asatru faith, similar to Christian confirmation or Wiccan initiation) is a sacred bond between two parties; in this case an Asatruar and the Gods. In order for such a relationship to work, both must be honest and faithful to each other.
Asatru, although currently being reborn, is at its roots a folk religion and we also uphold the value of fidelity to the ways of our ancestors. This is why historical research is so important to the Asatru-folk: it is the rediscovering of our ancient ways and our readopting of them.
In any discussion of the values of Asatru, discipline is best described as self-discipline. It is the exercise of personal will that upholds honor and the other virtues and translates impulse into action. If one is to be able to reject moral legalism for a system of internal honor, one must be willing to exercise the self-discipline necessary to make it work. Going back to my earlier criticism of society, if one rejects legalism, one must be willing to control ones own actions. Without self-discipline, we have the mess we currently see in our culture.
Looking at discipline in terms of fidelity, we see a close connection. Many Pagans go from faith to faith, system to system, path to path. Asatruar are much less likely to do this. The discipline of keeping faith with our Gods and the ways of our ancestors is part of our modern practice. In this way, we limit ourselves in some ways, but we gain much more in others.
Hospitality is simply one of the strongest core values at the heart of virtually every ancient human civilization. In a community/folk religion such as our own, it is the virtue that upholds our social fabric. In ancient times it was essential that when a traveler went into the world he could find some sort of shelter and welcome for the night. In modern times it is just as essential that a traveler find friendship and safety.
In our modern Asatru community, we need to treat each other with respect and act together for the good of our community as a whole. This functions most solidly on the level of the kindred or hearth where nonfamilial members become extremely close and look out for each other. It can mean hospitality in the old sense of taking in people, which we've done, but in modern times it's more likely to mean loaning someone a car or a bit of money when they need it (that's need, not want).
Part of hospitality is treating other people with respect and dignity. Many of our Gods are known to wander the world and stop in at people's houses, testing their hospitality and generosity. The virtue of hospitality means seeing people as if they were all individuals with self-respect and importance. Or perhaps from time to time, they are literally the Gods in human form. This has profound implications for social action in our religion. Our response to societal problems such as poverty (that's poverty folks, not laziness) is in many ways our modern reaction to this ancient virtue.
In terms of our modern community as a whole, I see hospitality in terms of frontier "barn raisings" where a whole community would come together and pool their resources.
This doesn't mean we have to forget differences, but we must put them aside for those who are of our Folk, and work for our common good.
Industriousness
Modern Asatruar must be industrious in their actions. We need to work hard if we are going to achieve our goals. There is so much for us to do. We've set ourselves the task of restoring Asatru to it's former place as a mainstream faith and by doing so reinvigorating our society and culture. We can't do this by sitting on our virtues, we need to make them an active part of our behavior. Industry also refers to simple hard work in our daily vocations, done with care and pride.
Here's a few concrete examples. If you are reading this and don't have a kindred, why not? Stop reading now. Go and place ads in the appropriate local stores, get your name on the Ring of Troth, Wyrd Network, or Asatru Alliance networking lists, and with other Pagan groups. Put on a workshop. Ok, now you're back to reading and you don't agree with what I'm saying here? Well, be industrious! Write your own articles and arguments. Write a letter to the editor and suggest this material be banned better that than passivity. Get the blood moving and go out and do it. That's how it gets done. The Gods do not favor the lazy.
The same holds true for our non-religious lives. As Asatruar we should offer a good example as industrious people who add to whatever we're involved in rather than take from it. We should be the ones the business we work in can't do without and the ones who always seem to be able to get things done. When people think of Asatru, they should think of people who are competent and who offer something to the world.
This doesn't just apply to vocational work, but to the entire way we live our lives. It is just as much a mentality. The Vikings were vital people. They lived each day to its fullest and didn't wring their hands in doubt or hesitation. We should put the same attitude forward in all that we do whether it is our usual vocation, devotion to the Gods, or leisure time.
Industry brings us directly to the virtue of Self-Reliance, which is important both in practical and traditional terms. Going back to the general notion of this article, we are dealing with a form of morality that is largely self-imposed and thus requires self-reliance. We rely on ourselves to administer our own morality.
Traditionally, our folkways have always honored the ability of a man or woman to make their own way in the world and not to lean on others for their physical needs. This is one of the ways in which several virtues reinforce and support each other. Hospitality cannot function if people are not responsible enough to exercise discipline and take care of themselves. It's for those that strive and fail or need assistance that hospitality is intended, not for the idle who simply won't take care of themselves.
In terms of our relationships with the Gods, self-reliance is also very important. If we wish the Gods to offer us their blessings and gifts, we must make ourselves worthy of them and the Gods are most pleased with someone who stands on their own two feet. This is one of the reasons for the Asatru rule that we do not kneel to the Gods during our ceremonies. By standing we acknowledge our relationship as striving and fulfilled people looking for comradeship and a relationship, rather than acting as scraelings looking for a handout from on high. It takes very little for a God to attract a follower, if worship simply means getting on the gravy train. We, as Asatruar, are people who can make our own way in the world, but who choose to seek a relationship with the Gods.
In mundane terms being self-reliant is a simple way to allow ourselves the ability to live as we wish to. In simple economic terms, if one has enough money in the bank one doesn't need to worry as much about being fired due to religious discrimination. We can look a bigot in the face and tell him just where he can put it. It's also nice to have something in the bank to lay down as a retainer on a good lawyer so we can take appropriate action.
On the other side of this is self-reliance in the sense of Henry David Thoreau, who advocated a simple lifestyle that freed one from the temptations of materialism. Again, here we are able to live as we wish with those things that are truly important. Religious people from all faiths have found that adjusting ones material desires to match one's ability to meet them leaves one open for a closer relationship with deity and a more fulfilling life. While our ancestors were great collectors of gold goodies, they didn't lust for possessions in and of themselves, but for what they stood for and could do for them. In fact, the greatest thing that could be said of a Lord was that he was a good Ring Giver.
Being self-reliant also means taking responsibility for ones life. It's not just about refusing a welfare check or not lobbying for a tax exemption, but also refusing to blame ones failures on religious intolerance, the patriarchy, or an unfair system. The system may, in fact, be unfair, but it's our own responsibility to
In societal terms, we have become much too dependent on other people for our own good. As individuals we look to the government or to others to solve our problems and as a society we borrow billions from our descendants to pay for today's excesses. Most problems in this world could be solved if people just paid their own way as they went.
The final virtue is Perseverance which I think most appropriate because it is the one that we most need to keep in mind in our living of the other values. Our religion teaches us that the world is an imperfect place, and nothing comes easy. We need to continue to seek after that which we desire. In this imperfect world there are no free lunches or easy accomplishments especially in the subjects we have set before ourselves. If we truly wish to build an Asatru community that people will hold up as an example of what committed people can do, then we must persevere through the hardships that building our religion is going to entail. We must be willing to continue on when we are pushed back. If one loses a job for ones religion, the answer is not to go back and hide, but to continue until one finds a vocation where one can more forward and live as an Asatruar
Finally we must persevere when we simply fail. If one's kindred falls apart because of internal strife, one should go back and start over. Pick up the pieces and continue on. If nobody had done this after the disintegration of the Asatru Free Assembly, this would probably never have been written. We must be willing to continue in the hard work of making our religion strong not just when it is convenient and easy to do so, but when it gets hard, inconvenient, or just plain boring. To accomplish without striving is to do little, but to persevere and finally accomplish a hard fought goal brings great honor.

DONALD DUKE ON THE FOUNDATION OF GOVERNANCE
PLEASE NOTE: This is a transcript pf the interview not a composed Content, so watch out for grammatical and typo issues
Be sure to also share your Thoughts   Welcome back to hello, Nigeria, thank you for staying with us. We have a very special guest in the studio with us today, the ex-governor of cross rivers, States and also an aspiring presidential candidate, and that is no other than Donald Duke. Thank you very much for being here, sir. Thank you. How are you doing today, depending on your questions, and we promise to be nice and fair I'll? Be nice? Ok, ok! So, let's go straight to the points now you've tasted politics before as governor, and you did have quite an impressive track record. However, usually they say that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Why did you decide to come back again? Is it a thing of you know it's a bit difficult to let go of power or for 12 years, so, ok, first, that's some letting go. No! It'S a politics to me is a vocation and not an occupation. I was doing something before I opted to serve. I went back to doing what I was doing and I think we are in a crisis right now and there's opportunity for good volition, and so I'm offering again to serve interesting. And what we're seeing now is that the policy has become very dilapidated in itself. We'Re seeing a lot of defections going on and, of course all of this is leading up to the elections. Everyone is in campaign mode and, quite frankly, a lot of people are making an embarrassment of Nigeria as we speak. How do you feel about what's currently going on in Nigeria's polity? One word sad. Another word another word, a majority yeah, no we're better than this. Unfortunately, it's all up we're now in the politics of self. So all the defections and the musical chairs all about placing oneself in a position of opportunity. So if I think, for instance, if I want to run for presidency and I'm in the APC - and I know that there's no vacancy there and I'll go to the PDP - why I stand about a better chance of. But it's not based on principle no base in the nation is based on self me myself and I it happened four years ago it's happening now and if we don't sure it will happen for his hands. So it's unfortunate now I had a conversation once with a former governor who served at the same time he served and he stated that he does not have a B. He doesn't believe in our generation, the younger generation. Why? Because the older generation has set a precedence of corruption, such thoughts, people go into power to amass wealth, it's bleached, our Commonwealth and just basically to satisfy their own personal interests. Now we find out that has sort of set of precedents for a lot of younger people who do not want to go there for the right intentions. What'S your take on younger people, because we're going to see a lot of them in 2019 running for elections? What you take on I'm an incurable optimist right and you need to have in place faith and hope that tomorrow will be better than today. Just because we didn't get it right there, our forebears didn't get it right doesn't mean that they wouldn't get it right. We need to keep on encouraging them. Idealism is more prevalent in younger people than all the people, all the people who are see who I've seen it all end up, just feeling that nothing's gon na change anyway, and all that, but we're gon na, have youth and IA youth. You can breathe some elements of idealism, so I think that we shouldn't you know generalized or stigmatize and say this is gon na. Be this way. No, if a society gets better if the country gets better, if we're are yearning, czar being met, then certainly we would would have a new and improved generation of Nigerians and we're gon na write them off at all. I believe in them I believe, they're better exposed than we are. I believe they want this country to be as good as the best of nations around the world. I believe they're even more frustrated than we are because they're the prime of their lives, and they see the opportunities beckoning on them, but they cannot express themselves our caution, though, that youth is not the only reason to get into politics. In fact, you through that experience, is a very potent explosive bump. Okay and I'll give you examples when you're young you're bursting with energy, but if you don't have any experience right, then that Energy's uncontrolled and we saw it in 1966 when we had young officers at the age of 27 28. Without any experience you know they go. The wipe off the political leadership, the wipe out the military leadership which inevitably led us to us at war if they were much older or more experienced, don't necessarily all the more experienced they would have probably would have done it differently. So we've got to be careful. I i like youth, i'm a beneficiary of youth. I was younger to commissioner 30. I was younger to Governor at 37. I gathered some experience because I've been in the public space since I was 19. I was remember the Students Union - and I was very, very knowledgeable in history and all that I was politically active and I cut my teeth at the age of 30. Anand went on 37 right from 30 37 hours in public space. I was member of the National Economic Intelligence Committee, any member of the national economy council, so I could say that I gathered experience and I want as many young people as possible to be given the opportunity to gather similar even better experience so that when they go Into the public space they have something to offer, but going straight from school to becoming a counselor or a member of the House of Assembly. You really have nothing to offer. It becomes an occupation rather than a vocation, and that's what we must avoid. Okay, now I want to use your governance as a model and apply it to your aspiring presidency. I would say the one of the largest issues that we have in Nigeria today is the fact that there is no nationwide database in terms of data collection for the people, 200 people can pass away and we don't know their names. We have no story to them and we can't attach any emotions to that person because, unfortunately, there's no data collection did you do anything with regards to data collection as governor of Cross River States, and if so, how can we now start looking towards applying that? On a nationwide scale, during my time as governor we had, that was the advent of the national ID card program and rather than duplicate efforts, we supported what the federal government was doing and it was. We had a pretty good roll out in cross river. I still have my national ID card, but, like every other thing was checkered after the government moved on after the change of government that was stopped. It was started again, I'm not sure where we are in that exercise, because no one has approached me for an update or review of what we had. So I think it's really stopped, but we did have it and we did encourage every one of our citizens to get registered and we had the database retained with us. We went beyond that. We had what we call the auto photo. Mapping of our state, where it's not just during a map of the state, is more like a pictorial digital map of the state, so every inch of land in the state we can zoom in and tell you the topography and even tell you the number of people. While they're at the particular time the shot was taken, and so when we were having our issues with over Bekasi in you know, with cameroon, the map we had of the area was far more sophisticated than what the military had. They had to lend them their maps and part of the problems of military. You don't have a good maps, you're liable to ambush and all sorts of things. So, yes, we collected data in, like you, said the right thing, data and data collection or the absence of it. There'S a huge, been in our planning. We don't know you're talking about identification of people and all that we don't know how many birds we have. We don't know how many deaths we have. We don't know how much infrastructure facilities that we need to bring in all that, so we're shortchanging ourselves completely, and i hope that we will review or restart that that program every citizen of this nation should be identified. But realistically, how long does it take to actually achieve something like that 200 million people? It could take you up to two three four years right to do it and to do it right if I were gon na, do it today I'll do it with the background of a census, while collecting all the data right of for census, I'll also collect the Dna of each and every Nigerian in the storage, so we know who is who it will help our crime lab you'll help identify folks if there's a national tragedy or something I can go there, get at the end and immediately tell you who that person is and All that, so it's all about data in a digital world. You know it better than I do it's data data data. So if you we can't, we can't operate in a world today. The way forbearers did it's everything, because you're planning for it for individual that it puts everything in perspective, which is absolutely true. We need to up our game with regards to data data, it's a skink now giving the benefit of hindsight and your time as governor. If you look back, are there any things you wish? You did differently? Well, there's one guy should have fired with my left, I'm serious because he stayed on and he did he did. I think he did a lot of hurt to a particular program, the tourism program, but I didn't fire escape so everybody's anything. You ought to have done that you didn't do yes, I should have fast so now. Let'S bullets really relate that. So our Corinth polity, we find that there, many people currently in office that the Nigerian people have advocated that they should be fired. What would you say of certain offices that are still you know being certain position that I still been occupied? How would you say we should have fared with regards to firing certain people, for example the IDP of police? At some point, people have clamored for him to be fired. Let me take a now say this very broadly, the near absence of consequences in a in our governance as a result of his resorting to where we are today as a nation we're a nation of anything-goes. So you mentioned 200 people. It'S one of the people died in Plato's state right and the people who are paid whose job it is to protect from the policing in form of intelligence gathering in the SSS. It'S in form of the army. There'S a brigade in in just and nothing happened. Nobody bore any consequence for that. The first thing you do is to ask what happened: how come Marauders, whom you claim are not Nigeria coming to your country and and kill 200 people? What have you done thereafter? Why did it happen in the first place? There'S an absence orders were all reactive, we're not proactive and - and you should investigate it and if they were found wanting they should be. They should be consequences for that. I would go as far as even taking them to court for criminal negligence. People died, you know and let's not trivialize death death is final. It'S over it's over for you in this life, there's no you're, not gon na wake up in 3 years time, when you come back again, so we should treat it as serious as it demands, but nothing happens. The folks are there, and people are still saluting in there big men and all that and as if nothing matters, so the word is consequence. We must ensure that we have a nation of consequences, and sometimes I tell religious folks that you know this thing about consequence was not it's not a dhama do convention, it was still by the Almighty. He gave you ten commandments right and the consequences for not living up to those. You know, and that's that's that's, for every action there must be a reaction, so consequence is not only negative is positive. If you do well, you should be. You should be rewarded accordingly. Interesting, we were I'm I'm glad you mentioned that. We also had recently that a few policemen who said whoever sets out on will had been rewarded. We have alerts of drama going on in the police sector, there's so much with regards to killings, police brutality and, more recently the NCAA's campaign has been going on for a while now interviews from the powers that we have said that you know the NCS campaign is Just a joke and people actually because they're not directly affected, they seem so distant from the problem and that's a thing that people who are governing you are not in tune with you. It'S like being a shepherd and not in touch with your flock right and says. Is real people know let's get up and and why would you I'm someone without a uniform in the first place? Why would you I'm someone give him all those ammunition and he's not identifiable if I'm on the road - and I see someone without my instinct - tells me that this is like a rubber okay and I want to get away from it and he happens to start shooting At me only to find find out that he is you know, what's ours or something like that, so I think it's it's executive irresponsibility they're not totally out of tune with it and you know, while you may blame the IGP and all this there we have representatives Of the national and at the state level we have governors right if I'm governor of a state - and I have this going on in my state and I'm chief security officer - I'm gon na call the police withdraw all of them from my state. I don't want them any longer here period, so it's not just the IGP right. There are various levels of governance that should have checked this and if it's not if the folks in the National Assembly are not inviting the Inspector General police to ask questions and all that and the folks in the State House of Assembly are not inviting the Commissioner Of Police or ask questions about this, then the governor can put a stop to it. Okay, now this week marks the world day against human trafficking, and human trafficking is one of the greatest problems that I would say we have in Nigeria today. Unfortunately, however, modern slavery is ignored to a certain extent. We do have Nats if we do have the arrow state task, force, etc and we're seeing a situation now where we're calling on the global community to come and help us to curtail the problem that we have with human trafficking in Nigeria. Now. This is something that I think we need to speak about, and I want to ask you how you feel towards human trafficking and how you think we need to start getting proactive and putting a stop to the issues that we are facing. 36,000 people crossed over from Nigeria to Italy alone in 2016. These are the numbers, you know. Yes, exactly. No, you see you I smiled when you said you know: we've invited the international community to come, help us and all that we always deal with symptoms and not the problem. Yeah, okay, people just wake up and start walking across a desert right into Libya. It'S not a one-day journey or three months journey. Sometimes it takes years. I'Ve interviewed someone who took it took him three years to get to Italy. He went through slavery, he was sold, he saw death use, you you sleep in the desert scorpions and by stinging you you wake up the person next to you is dead only to get really and be repatriated. Those are the symptoms of a deeper problem. The deeper problem is a failure to provide opportunity for them if they are per tuned in their country. Why do they want to walk across it then go through such hardship? We need to go, sell them themselves on streets in Italy. How do we revamp our failed? Well, you got you've got to revamp the entire economy to cater for the huge number of people. This is not a small country. 200 million people is a large number of people. You'Ve got to expand the economy to cater for them to provide opportunities for them. There must be safety valves in the society. You'Ve got to educate them. You'Ve got to ensure that they are your health care system can provide for them. If you each one of us, has one idea or the other one thing I could do and all that you must make as many people in our society as an entrepreneur as possible. If I have a great idea, I could employ ten people, that's ten people who would have gone to Italy and now with me and gainfully employed and those 10 people can fend for their families. So it's a near absence of opportunity that frustrates them and you're not going to go abroad and get an answer to that. The answer is here: if you provide for them right, they wouldn't migrate and we're talking about the poorer type, that's a lower segment. Those are the ones that walk across and go to Italy, what about the educated ones? What about the professionals who are daily migrating? They go abroad, ostensibly for holidays and never come back. I met a guy in New York last year who got to New York and came. He was, he was gay, this guy's as straight as an arrow, but he said he was gay and he was there with his best friend, but right and they're, both straight guys, but they came, they were gay and they but got back to ninetieth away. We persecuted and all that they're having a ball. Of course they got there. They got to put them on a welfare program, got them jobs and all that and I and but this is they just wanted to get out of the country, and there are many many more like that. Professionals dad look. We we are doctor. Citizen ratio is ridiculous. We should have like one doctor for every 600 people we have like one doctor for every six thousand. Meanwhile, we have five thousand doctors in South Africa, 15 thousand doctors on the NHS and all the people are here so 10 percent of the medical profession in the United Kingdom. Not the babbly, I'm Nigerian, exactly ten percent, that's one in every ten medical personnel in the UK is in Niger. I know of people who, in their old age, has studied medicine because the plan is after a few years. I want to relocate to the UK and it boils down to a major problem. We have a structural problem, we have a poverty problem. The poverty problem spirals into different symptoms. Now we see, another of our fears is in 2019, we have the elections. Coming. Lots of people have expressed fear with regards to the fact that we would have the people sell their votes, because people are hungry, people need to eat. How do we guarantee that in 20 nights? How do we ensure that people do not sell their goods because there is a poverty problem and they need to eat? And how do we really get rid of our poverty problem in India? It'S beyond for selling votes for election is beyond the poverty thing: it's total disillusionment. They believe that, whether they vote or not, what would be will be so just take the money and do whatever it is. But I said earlier on that the real problem, the migration, the social ills insecurity in the society - has to do the fact that our economy is no longer embracing one of us. Okay, the people who are their kind, who are within the economy such a small number. So well we run what I would call a goodwill economy right. I have a job, so I look after you, you begged me. I give you some support. I give you tips, but most folks survive that way, not because they're earning anything and you that have a job. This pressure on you is so much that you're liable to do and try and steal or get corrupt so that you can get more money because the dependents are. Are there, nothing will change in nineteen except we change this narrative. Okay, it's not the elections. We hope that we will get the right person coming in, but beyond that that right person will just get the right things done, expand the economy deal with the issues that I right effect credits because you can't grow an economy. We don't have affordable credit deal with the infrastructure issues right and ensure that we galvanize the vast resources that we have, because without that, we're very resourceful nation and that's that even makes it more pitiful. And you can see where the Nigerians take to the excel. Whether it's good or bad they excel, but there's a lot of frustration in the land, a lot of it all right. Let'S quickly take a look at our Justice Department and the politicians. Now we find that lots of people have lost faith in the Justice Department because we feel they feel rightly so. Yes, they feel, like you know, we see the big fishes being exempted from cases now, thankfully we have to collect justice. Banjo go who's now referred to as 14:14 president and there 14:14 a judge, and there many people who have gone into office, stolen money and gotten away with it. Nothing has been done to them, which brings me to this question. You'Ve been governor. What'S your take on the immunity clause, many people have advocated that it be totally expunged as it's protecting a lot of people who are in power from being able to love governor's and such a lot of people who aren't powerful being able to be large are common. Even so, then, the sarap report that came out three people were even given presidential pardon, also based on this clause. The immunity clause I think, has been taken out of conduct and have been abused. I think it was put there to protect governors and precedent from being distracted by also surface matters, but the governors themselves have abused it and they think they immune from corruption and all sorts of things. I think it should be amended certain classes of cases that you cannot exonerate. You know if it's if it's a case to do with murder or even corruption, it should be investigated. Why should we try it on it, but so it's something that we really have to address it shouldn't be an open blanket. I said: well, you know the same clause that talks about means. He also doesn't exonerate the government from treason, for instance. So it's already since there's a this room already there for revisiting. I think we should. He should be taken out not completely because there's some there's some merit to it, but largely so, if it's so that you don't have I've heard of cases where governors are involved. In the death of people here and now they have killer squads and all that shouldn't have immunity for that. If it's, if it's a corruption case before you prosecute, they should really be proper investigation, because you don't want the governor distracted from his regular work. Otherwise, all you'll be doing you know is, is in control. You know it reminds you, of course, when governors go to court on election matters until the case is properly settle and sometimes goes on to the Supreme Court and takes about two or three years of that tenure. They'Re totally distracted is every you know, you're dealing with your lawyers and all that you're, not sure if you're gon na remain in office or not, but it shouldn't be carte blanche as it is today, there should be some check to it. Okay, I'm talking about the judiciary, just as the ladies justice denied, so you can't have a country whereby you go to court and you're in court for three four five years on one case: they're going to exhaust the personnel court, they're gon na gon na cost a Lot of money, so we should revamp or review our judiciary system whereby a case once it's filed in a court at the lower levels within ninety days, it must be adjudicated okay, and we can do it so in within ninety days. On the preponderance of evidence adduced, the judge will take a decision. If you don't have enough to to file a case, then you don't go to court. You wait until you have enough, and the case is filed within 90 days. If you can't answer, then there's a problem somewhere, and so I will put 90 days for first 45 days to 60 days for for for appeal and not every case should go to the Supreme Court if it has nothing to do with the life or constitutional matter. You shouldn't get there and it causes Supreme Court should be at liberty to determine which case they want to review or not. But now everyone goes from the lower courts, even from the magic Magistrates Court to the high courts to the appeal court, the Supreme Court. So the whole system is bogged down. We don't have enough judges to deal with it. They are so poorly paid right. If we need to talk about you mention that poorly paid, not just the judges or lawyers themselves, because I was privileged to be in a forum of young lawyers and one of them AJC's that he complained about was remuneration for your lawyers. So I think it's very important I would take need to revisit the whole thing. If you talk about what will you talk about, it say about the policeman, the police, who you expect to go after? If you, if you, if you're, unfortunately, nothing your your car is robbed or you have a case of the police, you've got ta buy fuel for them. You'Ve got to provide vehicles for them. You'Ve got. How can you run a system like that, so we're gon na look at it, you're, not the entire judicial system, which includes a police or so, as we reviewed you know, we really need to start all over again together, Scotty right, because you say this for this Sector you go to the next sector. If you go to education, we'll say the same health. I want to help. You go the same thing, so we really need to started. I was actually going to say, let's actually touch on some social issues that we're facing in Nigeria. Today I would say the one of our greatest problems is drug abuse in Nigeria. Today it said that 7 million youths are addicted to drugs. 10,000 are dying every single year we saw the BBC documentary that came out on codeine right. The government came in and enforce certain policies after that, however, has the problem really been curtailed. We still have porous borders where things are coming in and out from and quite frankly, drug abuse continues. How do we start to curtail this problem? Well, it's probably not being curtailed, probably being exacerbated on two fronts: there: those who do the social stuff, social drugs that do the hard drugs heroin, cocaine and all the fancy dogs, because they can afford it and their particular lifestyle. But there's also very broad segment of Nigerians war on drugs out of frustration right and they just want to get out of here, it's a night to see it as an escape. So how do you deal with that? It comes back to the issue of opportunities and you know it's it's even more prevalent in affluent homes because, yes, there are from affluent homes, but they are frustrated they're, not that maybe educated. There are no jobs, then, at the lower levels you have those who are so frustrated, so they take they're the ones that take codeine and all these funny things and all that so guess what some of them sniff glue, yeah right. So then sniff petrol. Just to take their minds off it and unfortunately we don't have the institutions to deal with it. We don't have the medical personnel trained to deal with these issues. So that's why I said it's getting exacerbating it's getting worse by the day and I'm afraid I don't see any. I don't see any rain by the end of people, do not see rainbows, which is why I wanted to take a little delve into mental health, because I believe it's very important now we, your lawyer yourself how you knew that an attempt to commit suicide is punishable By law and it's unfortunate that we're seeing people constantly trying to kill themselves, we're not really enough totally alien to us. It'S part of the frustration people killing themselves and if they're by any means, do not succeed in killing themselves. They are arrested and they're taken to court and they've been tried for attempted suicide. How does that really make sense? Alright, adding to that the nigeria is the 30th most oppressive country in the world, and we have a 20-18 mental sorry, there's no mental health budgets in the health budget. We have a 20-18 health budget of 4 % just to make matters worse. Need, i say more said it all: we need to start right from the beginning, go back to the basics, to get this country right our priorities, our whopped. It took Bill Gates to tell us that we're investing infrastructure and total total ignorance of human development, human capital development, given the infrastructure that they say they're, investing we don't see so what's going on the country, is skewed in the wrong direction. So we've got to redress it totally from the basics. You'Ve got to look at occasional curriculum, but the teachers themselves need to be taught the infrastructure to support teaching the vast numbers to be taught. You go to the health care sector, patients die and doctors are not queried for it. You know there should be a responsibility right for patients and patient health care. You know they get some diagnosis and you go then II find that it's absolutely rubbish. You know, and there are no consequences for it. We don't even have a working health insurance scheme for every Nigerian cross over under my under my beat was the first state to sign on to the National Health Insurance Scheme, but the scheme, a number of states didn't the skin itself scheme itself was a good start And I supported, but it should be made compulsory. The essence is those who can afford or pay for those who cannot afford because they don't have jobs, but I said having a job in whore approaching should be a right of every citizen, so we should be so contributory that if I'm ill, I should be able To walk into any hospital and get treatment, I'm not the first question asking deposit ten or twenty thousand before the doctor even sees you doctors shouldn't, be you shouldn't? Do that it's it's, it should be it. Should you lose your license for asking that treat first, and so they it's part of a nation that has no safety valve completely and that's when we talk about migration and all that the fellow I spoke to who walked all the way to Italy said to me That he had come to a point where living here was living death, so dying, trying to do something, but him was better than just resigned himself to dying anyway. You know it's we're better than this. We know it. We certainly are: let's lighten up the conversation. How long have you been into music for all my life? What'S your favorite, I think I hear music from the womb, but consciously from the age of three okay. Remember my first music teacher lady. Oh, an English lady called mrs. Matcham right and she taught me that piano and then did some voice training. I sing by the way yeah I think I enjoy singing even more than playing then the one I was in secondary school. I tried my hands on the guitar no primary school. I played that beat the flute and still continued with the piano in secondary school. I tried my hands on the guitar then later on, I got to meet fella and I got pretty close to him actually and fell in love with the saxophone. So at what point you agree now, what was a plan for you at the end of the day? What was the future? You saw yourself as a lawyer as a thing. It evolves. Remember the age of twelve or thirteen. I wrote a letter to my father, saying I wanted to be a musician and my father knew this is a dangerous boy. So let me just I have to handle this carefully, so he he wrote me back a very kind letter saying that fantastic idea I mean yes, yeah, it's a gift, a talent but get go through school graduate. So, even when you become a musician, you'll be a better musician at that. So at that stages as 12 13 you know it was a era of the Jacksons and all that. So you fancy yourself being potential Michael Jackson as it were then, but before then you know. Okay, I want to be a doctor and I got into secondary school and I hated the sciences at the time by the time I was getting into university. I actually wanted to study history Wow right. I liked history, it's storytelling, it's his story, you know and her story as much as I want to say shoutout to those who studied history. I think Chloe is such a dignified profession. Well, that's what that's what I was told, but you've just said it at the lawyers are frustrated silence in the dignity I mean, but it's a good profession. It gives you an incredible background. I think what I whatever I am today, that background of being a lawyer and I have a master's at law - actually started a PhD, but I got I got tired of it. It was. I started school at the age of three and here I was what I was 23, then so for 20 years non-stop, all in school. So I got tired and I left and besides I had a good job offer in the United States. But beyond that the law background there is a fantastic background. It just opens your eyes. The skills are taking off your eyes and you see things differently and you know you're confident. I like history, because you know when you write history, you're writing about stuff. No one was there, so you can invent your own story and say it as it is. You know and all that I enjoyed history a lot and but I was dissuaded to do something else prospectively, if you has become the next presidents of the federal public ledger, an explicit okay. You know me from this side of the sofa. Are we going to see history back in our schools? One of the saddest aspect of our educational curriculum is the absence of history. In our curriculum. I don't know who took that decision. I said in words I would use, but I'm on camera, so I wouldn't use them, but I don't think those people are fit to ever lead our society. I won't be part of this society if you don't know where you're coming from. How do you know where you're going? They say? Oh they're, because you see a good, you know we're very young country. A lot of the actors in our history are still very much around, so it was done to protect them, but you can't live a lie right and now history is not the worst. I mean if you go into black history in United States, where, if I go to Argentina, you know in all of South America, you have blacks everywhere, except Argentina. They literally wiped out every black, but they don't deny that it's a history, they did it. Their forbearance. Did it you've got to live it? You know you've got to come to terms with it, so we are living a lie a few in last year it was last year, I said on occasion the summer Massacre, and it took some very. I now call them Patriots right and they put together and documented it and some of the people we hero-worship in our society today well behind that Massacre, but it doesn't take anything up. You know every family there's hardly any family. You know Sarah that was not affected by the massacre. You don't sweep it under the carpet, just as you wouldn't super the fact that some and again soldiers went and slowed to the sat down and his family or killed my malaria or did certain rubbish bad things of things are not acceptable. It'S there. It'S a fact. We should document it so that it never happens again. Absolutely so now, that's a very fantastic, but I'm hoping that would actually get to see that happening. We get to see history back in our books and in our schools. Finally, if you were not run into what's becoming president of Nigeria 2019, what would you be doing and what you and the sages? How do you plan to retire I'll return, a box okay about to be lowered into the ground? That'S when I retire, because as long as you have breath in you, you can, you can be of use to one person or the other. You can help if I wasn't running and while running still doing all the things, I'm not just that and that alone there are many things. Folks, like myself could do. We have a context. We have the leverage to make things happen. I would, I would not be too focused in being a millionnaire any longer, because if you haven't done in your forties, forget it but I'll rather be doing things like helping in people in society, actualized, my wife and I for instance, we we have a Health Foundation. Neither was our doctors, but we have medical missions called quarterly right in caliber, so we have these doctors some from overseas, but the bulk of them from Nigeria and they offer one month of free medical care. I like to do more of that, because it's it's so rewarding, you can put into words. We had. We have cases where people have diseases or ailments have been holding on for four years and you relieve them of it. You know the gratitude the way they look at you. We without uttering a word of thanks. It'S written on their faces, it's priceless, so you get to stay in your life. You are, you know, you've been taking and taking you've got to start giving you know and and that's what makes life life was worth it. It'S life is about giving and taking breathe in, and you breathe out. If you breathe in you, don't breathe out, you die. If you bring out all the time when you don't breathe in you will die, so you must grow that healthy balance. Okay, one last question: before we round up: what do you think about people that don't like plantain, because my co-hosts are sitting here, insults me at least once a week for not like a cleansing? I share that, with her I'll tell you something I said it frying plantain, not eating, fried fried plantain doodle to be precise at about the age of four and we were privileged. We had a cook steward and all that he couldn't cope with my demand, so he taught me how to do it myself and I have a number of scars on my stomach to show whether oil, if you don't like plantain by doing like fried pie, they would Like any plans, unfortunately, yes, I, like boiled, no Jamie I've had so much of it. No, I don't beans he's a nut on a regular basis. Why would you like me anyway, with Miriam from knows No Boundaries you're getting tired of plants? Ok, the current presidential aspiring. In 'PreparedU,' A College President Argues for Mixing Liberal Arts And Workplace Readiness
The generation of students attending college today just aren’t that impressed by traditional markers of authority—and they’re not coming to campus to gaze up at wise leaders on a pedestal (well, at least according to surveys). And that’s one reason the president of Bentley University, Gloria Cordes Larson, invites students to call her by her first name.
It’s a move that President Larson—I mean, Gloria—sees as part of the university’s push to make higher education more of a hybrid experience between immersion in traditional liberal arts and a focus on practical skills and internships. Bentley is a bit unusual, in that it is an undergraduate institution focused on business. But Gloria Larson argues in a new book that all of higher education should embrace this mixture, and move past the notion that a college has to focus on either liberal arts or practical workplace preparation. The book is called PreparedU: How Innovative Colleges Drive Student Success.
EdSurge recently talked with Larson about her new book, and about what her research shows today’s students are looking for from higher education. The conversation has been edited and condensed for clarity. You can listen to a complete version below, or on your favorite podcast app (like iTunes or Stitcher).
EdSurge: You say that today’s students “challenge professors like no generation has before them." What do you mean by that?
Larson: This is a generation that grew up almost having adult status, even as kids. They've always been encouraged to speak their minds, to be authentic, to offer their opinions in the classroom—even in K-12—and certainly by the time they get to college. This is not a shy group. They really encourage one another in their thinking, and they encourage the adults around them. I found it to be a very flattened, democratic higher ed these days as opposed to when I went to college, and you sort of sat at the feet of scholars. And frankly, I think the faculty encourages that. They encourage that kind of open discussion where faculty can push students for their perspectives and students are willing to push back and offer their opinions. And I think that leads to that kind of healthy conversation.
And that transfers into the workplace, where they do obviously respect the titles that those ahead of them have, but at the same time, I think more and more workplaces are much more heavily into participatory democracy and encourage opinions because that's what leads to enhanced innovations.
And you encourage students there to call you "Gloria"?
I do.
I don't know if a lot of college presidents would do that, or even professors.
Well, I'll tell you why. It's not just because I'm so enamored with them, which you already know I am. It's also because it's a way to encourage them to approach me on campus and to have conversations with me. As opposed to seeming like a trip to the principal's office, by calling me "Gloria" from right out of the starting gate, I find that if I'm walking around campus, I'm grabbing something for lunch in our cafeteria, the kids often walk up to me and will tell me what they're learning in the classroom. I throw a lot of events at the president's house on campus, and I find that they're very open to conversation, not a bit intimidated. And I think that intimidation is lowered significantly by asking them to call me by my first name. I also think because I'm a non-academic president and I didn't grow up sort of through the traditional academic ladder, that I don't find the title particularly necessary.
Many professors I talk to are concerned that higher education is becoming too career-focused. What would you say to someone who looks at your book and the approach that you're applying at Bentley and says this is too much emphasis on what employers might want rather than what has made the academy what it is?
The point that I've tried to make in the book is that we shouldn't have this sort of tug and pull between traditional arts and sciences and traditional professional focus, whether that be business or engineering or something else. That it should be an "and," not an "or." At the same time, we give an equal measure, equal importance to arts and sciences. And so they have those life-long learning skills. They have the things that we hear from employers they desperately want with strengthened communication skills and collaboration skills and critical thinking.
This was born of some research that we did coming out of the recession when liberal-arts students were not getting jobs those first several years after the global recession. It's a national project we called PreparedU where we ask employers, academics, parents, and students what they thought is most needed (and more than 3,000 people responded). What we heard was a lot of confusion on the part of employers. CEOs said liberal arts are the mainstay of being able to innovate in the workplace and being the strong communicators and those who had the long-term success. Meanwhile, hiring managers were asking for actual skillsets so the kids could come in and hit the ground running, particularly as companies dropped a lot of their in-house training programs in those years right after the recession.
Our continued research over the last four or five years has made us even more certain that the better we can integrate these professional skillsets both in the classroom and through internships and other types of external opportunities for our students. Through deep, deep dives into liberal arts, we can encourage kids to double major—to learn through their analysis and through their own integration to figure out the answers to difficult problems. By combining what they're learning through the liberal arts and being able to, say, read a balance sheet.
To me it's all about a holistic education. If you're going to charge families the kind of price tags that we all do for a private college education, it darn well ought to have the ability to take your child into the marketplace successfully. But more importantly to help fully prepare them for a long and successful career and a rewarding life. And we think that there is still a place for place-based education, particularly in the United States. And that if we're going to have it, it should be the best it can possibly be. I never want what I'm arguing in PreparedU to be confused with vocational education. It's not.
There's a mention in your book about hybrid teaching. And I wanted to ask you what you meant by that because a lot of people throw around that word and everyone means something a little different.
One of the things we learned with our most recent research with Burning Glass is that the deeper you can go with this integrative set of capabilities, the more you're matching the things that today's marketplace is calling for. For example, people working in human resources are no longer purely steeped in human-resource disciplines. They have to know social media. They have to have great facility with all the latest technologies. They need analytical skills. They need to know where to find the information and how to apply it. And this is true for almost everything.
So that also connects to technology. For example, here at Bentley if you're a marketing major or majoring in creative industries and potentially going into something in the marketing or social media space, you can be proficient and certified in HubSpot technology. Now that's not because HubSpot technology will always be the technology. In fact by next year or six months later, it could be something else. It's this facility with how you gain new knowledge and new skillsets on a constant, continuing basis.
There’s a Gallup survey you cite frequently in your book, which has a statistic that I found surprising, only 29 percent of college graduates said they strongly agreed their college prepared them well for life outside college. What do you make of this disconnect?
For a long time, particularly in those early years out of the recession when there was a lot of defensiveness on the part particularly of liberal arts colleges because their kids were not getting picked up in the marketplace the way they had been in the past. (That's evened out now that employers are hiring full tilt.) But I still hear from business leaders on a semi-regular basis that they don't think all kids are equally well prepared. And it's not because they picked business to study or history to study or English. It's because they didn't have the opportunity to apply what they were learning successfully. So you could be an English and media arts major, and if you don't do an internship, if you don't have a chance to maybe bring industry on campus so that you get that corporate immersion, then you're going into the marketplace having not tried or had the chance to try any of the things that you're learning.
There are now new online options, and people can get their entire degree in business or anything else online, sometimes for much less money. Are you concerned at all about online options eating away at traditional enrollments as the costs of attending keep going up?
Place-based, particularly private place-based even with scholarships and funding available, it may not be available to everyone. And of course, I'm all about making sure that as many people as possible, as many young people as possible can avail the resources of higher education. But having said that, I think that there is going to still be in our country for many years to come a strong, strong pitch for the value of place-based.
If you have the chance in college to take on leadership positions like serving as an RA in a dorm, if you have the chance to work on a semester-long project with a professor, as I did way back when in college, it changes your perspective on everything to have that mentoring relationship. And you carry those rewards from college into the workplace. And Gallup has found that those who've had a particularly engaged, successful college experience, not that 27 percent or whatever the number you quoted, but those who are on the other side of that who said, "Wow, I was prepared," or the percentage that are prepared, so much of that comes from a rich set of engagements while they're in college. And I don't think you can get that to the same degree through MOOCs or online; although I strongly personally value online.

Cuba: A Practical Guide for Visitors
I loved my trip to Cuba and enjoyed every minute of it. It’s fantastic place like nothing you have seen and known before. But it is not an easy country to travel in. It is not stress free tourism and not meant for spontaneity. This is not meant to intimidate anyone but I would merely recommend a bit of organisation and planning.
The Havana promenade
1. Visa:
Almost everyone will need a visa to Cuba. Depending on the passport you hold, the visa fees to be paid may differ but you will probably need a visa. There maybe exceptions for certain Latin American and Caribbean visitors but if you hold an Asian or European passport you will need a visa. You will also need a visa (called a travel card) if you hold a USA passport. Further, a completely separate set of rules apply for citizens of the USA as well as green card holders and other residents when entering Cuba. You will need to confirm your trip is for educational, vocational training or for similar other purpose and will need to record all such activity you undertook. I do not want to go into details for this here but please research rules in your own countries (country of nationality and residence) for travel to Cuba.

2. Visa process:
The process of obtaining a visa for Cuba is not very easy. There is not a lot of information available online. I am going to detail my experience which could help someone in my circumstances – I am an Indian passport holder and live in London. The only information available online was incorrect. The information provided stated I could pay the visa fees in cash and provided a list of documents I needed. Unfortunately, when I arrived at the Cuban embassy in London (this is on Shaftesbury Avenue) I was told the visa fees is payable only by a postal order. I was also told my bank statements would be required although this was not mentioned in the list of documents. There is a post office near the embassy so I could run out and get the postal order made and come back for the visa. Luckily my bank was also nearby. To make an annoying process even more cumbersome, I was told after I made the postal order, the fee amount originally provided to me was incorrect. So I had to go back and cancel the postal order made and make a new one.
My advise would be to call the embassy in your city and ask for all the information you need. If you hold a passport different from your residence (like me) mention that expressly. Ask for the following information:
Visa fees payable as per your nationality,
Any other additional fees payable,
Requirements for your passport – how many blank pages required and when the passport can expire,
The detailed list of the documents required,
Method of payment of the visa fees.

3. Make all your travel arrangements before you land (to the extent possible):
Making travel arrangements after you have landed is not recommended. You will not have easy access to the internet and sad to say, you will probably be overcharged. We tried making bookings at casas months prior to landing in Cuba but found it a very cumbersome process.

4. Tell everyone you are going to Cuba:
General bragging aside, tell the people who need to know. Tell your bank, tell your credit card company, tell your employer (especially if you work in a bank), tell your phone company, etc. There are a lot of regulations still in place so please make sure you don’t fall foul of any.
5. Internet:
You need to rethink the way you travel a little bit. Cuba is not the kind of place you can tick off the first ten ‘things to do’ and ‘places of interest’ from Tripadvisor or look up the highest rated restaurant nearby. Your reliance on the internet will need to be reduced considerably because there is pretty much no real access to internet in Cuba. You can get an internet card for CUC 2 which will provide you with internet access for an hour – please note most hotels will not sell you the card for CUC 2 which is the cost price. Hotel Riviera is a good option while the Melia Cohiba sells its for CUC 10 and Hotel Nacionale charges CUC 7. The catch is that to access the wifi with the card you will need to be in a designated wifi zone. Most big hotels are designated zones and coming across a crowd of people frantically typing on their phones is a hilarious sight and a little bizarre. So please do not expect to have access to the internet easily, if at all. Vodafone mobile data does not work on roaming in Cuba although O2 did although its not very good.

5. Currency:
I spent a week in Cuba and I am still not sure how the currency works. The first thing about the Cuban currencies you need to know (the plural used for currencies is not a typo) is that you can only buy the currencies once you are in Cuba. Secondly, there are two types of currency used in Cuba and the one you will mostly use is the CUC.
6. Money:
Since you only buy Cuban currencies once you are actually in Cuba, please be prepared to stand in line (a really really long one) at the airport to change your money.  The other alternative is withdraw CUCs from an ATM. Apparently there is an ATM upstairs in the airport if that works for you. As I mentioned in point 3, make sure you have checked with the bank and are able to withdraw CUC with your credit card/ bank card. If you have an USD based account you will (probably) not be able to withdraw money with your bank card and will need to bring all the money you need with you. If your bank account is with an USA bank, check with them to see if you can withdraw CUC with their cards since for instance, American Express cards do not work in Cuba.

7. Take a good guide book:
You will need to go old school – back to good and proper physical guide book. I used the Rough Guide to Cuba which I picked up from the library on a whim when I went to get some other books. Once we landed in Havana we realised what a lifesaver the book turned out to be. All tourists in Cuba carried guide books – there is no other way. Of course the Lonely Plant series was pretty popular too. I assume your guide book will have the relevant maps as well.
8. Brush up on map reading skills:
With no internet there is no Google Maps either. I think it was in Havana that I realised how dependant I am on Google Maps which shows my location at very pace. Map reading from a paper map is a lot harder.
Picture taken from the breakfast room of Melia Cohiba
9. Overpack:
Cuba is a not the country for which you pack lightly. Pack everything you need, you may need, you may think you need, you don’t think you will need but you still end up needing. We walked around a lot and there were no supermarkets we could find and no shops to really go and buy a toothbrush. So bring all your clothes and underwear (and extras as well), toiletries, soap, snacks – you get the general idea. Even the shops that are there seem to be selling cakes or some kind of Cuban snack food but no other every day items that you might need. If you are in a fix, ask a local person and they will definitely be able to get hold of whatever you need or direct you to where you might find this. But be prepared to also not being able to find it.
I am done for now but this is definitely not my only post on Cuba. There are a lot more to come. And please tell me about your holiday plans? I would love to know. Just a hint – we have a whole travel section. Follow us on our Twitter, take a look at our Instagram page (give us a follow too!) and like us on Facebook page also while you are at it! Hope you had a lovely weekend.
