Tumgik
#based it a lot on rewatching the animated movie recently
Note
i know you’ve watched schmigadoon, and listened to hamilton, but what are your thoughts on other musicals, and musicals/musical theatre as a whole? yay or nay? favorites?
Well first, I’ve never stepped foot in a theater… so the closest I’ve come to seeing musical theater as it’s intended to be seen was Disney’s Hamilton performance. And maybe Norman Jewison’s Jesus Christ Superstar, which is more of a stage production in spirit than it is a movie.
There are a couple Original Cast Recordings that I adore: Jesus Christ Superstar and Phantom of the Opera, both of which I owned on CD and played incessantly back around 1989/1990.
(I discovered Phantom via a televised pairs figure skating performance —they skated to “Music of the Night”— which in turn led me to buy three Michael Crawford Sings Broadway CDs, and that introduced me to Sondheim and a few other things.)
With that said, I’ve enjoyed lots of movie musicals, many of which are based on stage productions.
Tumblr media
Given my age, it should be obvious that the first musical I saw was Grease. And among the movies on this list, it’s the one I’ve seen the most, and most recently… I rewatched it a year or two ago. (Along with Grease 2, about which the less said, the better. Michelle Pfeiffer looks annoyed to be in it.) That soundtrack was burned into my brain by 1970s radio DJs, so I’m quite fond of it, including the Barry Gibb/Frankie Valli original that plays over the credits.
Tumblr media
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was a particular favorite —then and now— but I don’t really think of it as a musical. The songs are catchy, but they feel tacked on, and the Oompa Loompas get the best one.
Tumblr media
Okay, this one is embarrassing, but… so be it. When I was ten, I owned the Xanadu soundtrack. On vinyl and 8-track. I loved every single song… ELO and Olivia Newton-John could do no wrong in my eyes. Then, years later, I finally saw the movie. And… yup, I’ve seen that. Definitely saw… that.
Tumblr media
Give My Regards To Broad Street isn’t a good movie in any conventional sense, but… Paul McCartney. That’s all it takes, if you ask me.
Tumblr media
We watched Little Shop of Horrors on the stream a year or two ago, and I still thoroughly enjoy it. “Suddenly, Seymour”, “Dentist!”, “Somewhere That’s Green”, and “Feed Me” are all delightfully infectious… I can’t help singing along. Best Rick Moranis movie ever, too.
Tumblr media
The Rocky Horror Picture Show is another one we watched on-stream. I was never a joiner or a cosplayer, so I didn’t get into the participatory experience that is Rocky Horror, but I’ve watched it a few times now under more sedate circumstances. There are a few solid songs in there, but “Time Warp” is my favorite, simply because the 1980s music video show Night Flight —with Nina Blackwood!— used to play it almost every week.
Tumblr media
Moulin Rouge is a delight, and it features a song written by my all-time favorite singer-songwriter, David Baerwald: “Come What May”. Although he personally considers it a sell-out… if you know any of his work, it’s clear that the “love can conquer anything” idea behind the song is antithetical to his whole oeuvre. But I love it anyway.
Tumblr media
I enjoyed Into The Woods quite a lot —creepy Johnny Depp is the best Johnny Depp— but I’ve only seen it once, so it didn’t make a massive impression on me.
Tumblr media
In The Heights was… fine. Perhaps the strangest thing about it is that John Chu’s visuals are more interesting than LMM’s songs… which are better than Moana’s, but don’t approach the, er, heights of Hamilton or Encanto. Anthony Ramos is great, though.
Tumblr media
Spielberg’s West Side Story was another film that I basically enjoyed, but it’s one of those things that are so thoroughly baked into the culture —like Animal House— that you feel like you’ve already seen it, even when you haven’t. I probably should have opted for the Rita Moreno version.
Tumblr is being an asshole and limiting me to 10 GIFs, so I’ll follow this up with another post… I’ve got at least another ten to go.

you talk about spanish language anime all the time, do you have any favorite OPs?
what a difficult question. Since I mostly watched dubbed anime as a kid (and only very recently i've gotten in the habit of dipping my toes into it again, even if they don't translate music much anymore), most of these are on the older side, but off the top of my head...
Dragon Ball's first opening is genuinely the best anime op ever, no I will not budge on this, and it's just as good in spanish. I also have a ton of affection for GT's opening. I'd put these in my top 3 any time, but I wouldn't say they're my favorites.
Another personal top-3 choice for me is definitely Slam Dunk's first opening. Was really bummed this one didn't make it into the movie. I used to make it a point to rewatch this show's latam dub yearly, I should do that sometime again.
Absolute favorite is still the spanish version of Catch You Catch Me, from Cardcaptor Sakura though. Absolute banger. 10/10.
And of course I've gone on record talking about just how good the first digimon adventure opening is, since the spanish translation of it is basically just transliterating the japanese lyrics and melody. This was one of the last shows I remember being dubbed before all latam anime dubs were based on their English ones, so I have a lot of affection for it in comparison to the atrocious english dub.
Oh, and before I forget; the spanish opening for kamisama kiss is such a chill earworm. It's on regular rotation in my playlists.

Happy 26th anniversary to the release of the Digital Monster ver 1 V-pet, and to the Digimon franchise as a whole. This series has meant so much to me since I was a kid, and it has been there for me through a lot of ups and downs in my life.
To commemorate this anniversary it was only appropriate to make a countdown of some of my favorite Digimon related things:
Top 26 favorite Digimon (at this exact moment in time; this list could look very different next week):
26. Tukaimon:
Tumblr media
Yes, a recolor, but I've always thought Tukaimon was cooler than Patamon. I'm a sucker for a nice evil version of a classic Digimon, and Tukaimon just has such a cool color scheme in my opinion. Definitely a Digimon that I wish had more of a prominent place in the franchise.
25. Wizarmon
Tumblr media
A classic, iconic Digimon who has the iconic death in the anime's history. Wizarmon has such an amazing design, and his sacrifice in Digimon Adventure is a scene that I rewatch time and time again and always tear up. Even outside of the anime, Wizarmon has always been super cool, and the Witchelny is such a neat setting that I hope to see explored more in the future.
24. Mienumon
Tumblr media
Probably my favorite overall design from Appmon, Mienumon was such an iconic villain in that series, and it was such a shame that she didn't stick around longer. I really like the design, and I hope that when we eventually see the Appmon integrated more fully with the rest of the franchise in future games that Mienumon makes her triumphant return.
23. Culumon
Tumblr media
The cutest Digimon ever. Culumon was such a delightful presence in Digimon Tamers, and a digimon who I always want to see show up again even if it doesn't always make sense. We can make it work, just have the Digi-Entelechy show up again for some reason.
22. Jellymon
Tumblr media
Jellymon-sama was one of the best parts of Digimon Survive, and a really strong new Digimon design. I love pretty much the whole look, and it's such an inspired way to make a jellyfish based Digimon really work.
21. Ogremon
Tumblr media
A classic design that I don't think I need to say much more about. Ogremon has been a presence in Digimon since the earliest days of the franchise, and was really cool in the original Digimon Adventure. I'm happy that they're a Digimon that shows up so frequently, because they really are awesome.
20. Ranamon
Tumblr media
Without a doubt the best of Digimon Frontier's villains, and just a really cute design. It's a real shame that we have not seen her make much in the way of appearances in recent years, and I hope that eventually changes.
19. Impmon
Tumblr media
A nice simple design, and a great role in Digimon Tamers. Impmon really straddles the line between cute and cool a lot, and is a nice representation of mischievous type Digimon, who are one of the kinds that I really like.
18. Craniummon
Tumblr media
Craniummon has a super cool design, and I loved how they were portrayed in Digimon Savers. They felt like the most dynamic of the Royal Knights in that series to me, and I'm always happy when they get to play a role in the story of a Digimon thing. I especially love the color scheme, and just look at Claiomh Solais. That thing is so cool.
17. DORUmon
Tumblr media
One of the cutest Digimon, and one of the best representatives of the X-Antibody line in general, which is an era of Digimon that I feel is criminally overlooked. DORUmon was an excellent protagonist for the X-Evolution movie, and remains among my favorite Digimon to get in new games.
16. Fairimon
Tumblr media
A nice and stylish design, and the best Digimon in Digimon Frontier. It is such a shame that Fairimon, just like everyone aside from Takuya and Kouji, was criminally underused in the second half. Also a special shoutout to Shutumon who also has a really awesome design.
15. Guilmon
Tumblr media
Is there anything more I even need to say about Guilmon. He's one of the most popular Digimon of all time for a reason, and when you combine being the protagonist Digimon of the best anime and having such a cool design, it's easy to see why.
14. Imperialdramon Dragon Mode
Tumblr media
I have so much nostalgia for downloading the clip of Paildramon first evolving into Imperialdramon around Christmas in 2000, so Imperialdramon has always held a special place in my heart. While the Fighter Mode and Paladin Mode are both cool, there's something just really special about the original Dragon Mode, especially because it's not the type of design we usually see for the main character's partner
13. Gazimon
Tumblr media
Probably one of the oddest inclusions on my list, but when I was a kid, Gazimon was my absolute favorite Digimon (perhaps the color purple has always been something I like in Digimon designs looking over a lot of the Digimon on this list). While it no longer occupies that place, it still has a strong place in my heart, and I'm always happy when I see Gazimon.
12. Shoutmon X7
Tumblr media
An amazing design, and an amazing insert song that always plays. I quite enjoyed Digimon Xros Wars as a series, and X7 was a great Digimon to build up to as you saw all of the protagonist Digimon coming together to form a champion for them all.
11. Renamon
Tumblr media
Cool and elegant. There's not much more to say about Renamon. I feel like if you even remotely know what Digimon is, you know about Renamon.
10. Dark Knightmon
Tumblr media
A villain so iconic that he has been brought back multiple times already, which is pretty rare for Digimon of that era. A super cool design, and a big part of why Xros Wars was so good. Please put him in the next Story game so I can play as him.
9. Bancho Lilimon
Tumblr media
Criminally underused, and such a cool design. I would love for her to become the default Ultimate for Lilimon instead of Rosemon, not that I don't like Rosemon a lot. Honestly, her whole design is goals.
8. Lopmon
Tumblr media
Definitely the cuter of the two siblings. I just love Lopmon's design so much; they're just so precious. I also think the extra horns work really well on their design. I don't want to knock on Terriermon, who is still neat, but Lopmon is just an incredible Digimon design.
7. Lilithmon
Tumblr media
Beautiful and stylish. Lilithmon has always been a favorite of mine, so I was really excited when she showed up in Xros Wars and had a big role.
6. Bancho Leomon
Tumblr media
One of the coolest Digimon designs of all time. We've had a lot of Leomon variants over the years, but none of them even approach Bancho Leomon's aesthetic. I loved his role in Digimon Savers, and I just love everything about this Digimon.
5. Vamdemon
Tumblr media
The iconic Digimon villain. There's a reason almost every Adventure sequel has found some way to cram Vamdemon in in some fashion. He's just such an iconic and menacing villain, and his design is both spooky and stylish. I just love that cape.
4. Alphamon
Tumblr media
A super cool member of the Royal Knights with an amazing cape and a great design. Alphamon has a fairly different color scheme for a protagonist Digimon, which is quite refreshing.
3. Dukemon
Tumblr media
The best of the Royal Knights without a doubt. The design and weapons are both great, and Masako Nozawa has done such a great job making Dukemon sound cool across multiple different incarnations, although obviously Tamers is the biggest one. The Dukemon vs Beelzebumon fight is one of my favorite moments in any Digimon anime.
2. Beelzebumon Blast Mode
Tumblr media
And speaking of Beelzebumon, I have to really shout out Blast Mode. Beelzebumon is super cool on his own, and would have probably made the list if I was okay with having two different modes of the same Digimon both on the list, but Blast Mode takes the design even further. Without a doubt the coolest Digimon in existence.
Lilimon
Tumblr media
Lilimon is the cutest Digimon of all time, and my personal favorite Digimon. I love her design so much, and she's been such an inspiration to me over the years. Even though she's cute, she's also a fierce fighter, and my now and forever favorite Digimon.

Rook, Leona: Look a Little Closer
BLESS TWST FOR THE PETTINESS, IT NEVER DISAPPOINTS 🙏 xjdvsjdnsksvs The way Leona is just. So done with this situation and wants to get out ASAP, but Rook is babbling and prolonging the conversation and making Leona deeply uncomfortable with it—
Rook has a lot of insightful things to say about art!! When you look at a work again, sometimes you’ll notice things that you didn’t before; I also understand the feeling of being so passionate about a work of art that you fixate on it, analyze it, and excitedly discuss it with others. That’s basically what I do for TWST 😂
P.S. Glad it only took 30 rolls for me to get Rook!! The lighting and the scattering petals in his Groovy are so gorgeous 😭 Oh, and it seems like the Groovy poses are based on what the boys do during various Flying lesson animations! No hands on the broom though… Rook, buddy. I don’t care if you’re trying to T-pose or do the Titanic. Your ass is going to come tumbling out of the sky—
A Boy in Bloom, and his Flowering Future.
Tumblr media
“What do you do on your days off?”
“I often enjoy attending the theater or watching movies. Plays, musicals, dramas, films of all genres--I enjoy them all.” Rook’s eyes glinted with keen interest. “Why, quite recently--this last weekend, in fact--I rewatched one of my favorite dramas with Epel-kun!
“I must have already seen it 100 times by now, and yet it never fails to allure me.” He sighed lovingly, his gaze clouding with adoration.
“You are a man with refined tastes, Roi des Lions, so perhaps you’ve heard of this drama? It is a harrowing tale of a monster that seeks to be like man... Alas!! He is shunted at every opportunity. It truly begs of us, Is there humanity to be found in every beast, just as there is a beast to be found in every human?”
Leona’s face twisted into a scowl. “Okay, I’m going to stop you right there. I don’t need such another long-winded answer.”
We’ll never get done with this interview at the rate this is going.
“My, did I overstep my bounds?”
“That’s all you ever do,” Leona snorted.
To this, the birthday boy only chuckled. “Pardon, I wished to be more accommodating of you.”
“More what?”
“I noticed, Leona-kun, that you hesitated earlier when I assured you that it would be no trouble at all were you to request that I elaborate on my hobbies.” Rook’s half-smile was reminiscent of a semicircle of moon: half dark, half light, one hundred percent mystery. “Even the ever so fierce Leona-kun can have his moments of skittishness, left too shy to approach with his inquiries. I thought to consider those feelings and to move along the conversation myself!”
“Tch. I’m damned if I play your game, and I’m damned if I don’t. You just do and say whatever you want anyway.” There was a snideness set in Leona’s voice. “I think I’ve heard just about enough about what you do in your spare time. Staring at people, recreating things in creepily close detail, incessantly watching the same things over and over--”
Expecting different results. For a change of fate, a reward for all that effort.
The very definition of insanity.
“Fufu. There is bliss to be found in such simplicity, Roi des Lions.” Rook tenderly laid a hand upon his heart, extending the other to the sky above. “To observe is to glean new details with each pass of the eyes, to indulge in the senses until one is entirely entranced...!!"
“... You’re really something alright.” Leona placed a hand on his hip, eyes cut with suspicion. “You really think there’s that much fun to watch grass grow or watch paint dry--even if it’s faked?”
“Whether real or staged, it matters not. The emotions being conveyed are always genuine!”
“Now you’re just lying through your teeth. Putting on airs, lying, deception--”
He saw himself in a crown of crumpled cardboard. A harsh wind roared, sending it scattering as fine particles of sand. Another roar ravaged the sky as he desperately clawed to reclaim his crown.
The pathetic sound came from him.
Pretending to be something you’re not.
“--They’re all natural parts of life. How can you say those feelings, too, are ‘true’?”
“Oui. They are as true as the blood in my veins and the breath in my lungs. Art comes in many forms, you see. However, no matter what form it may be beholden to, art retains its novelty, and its power to move our hearts.
“When a work of art most resonates with us, that is when the truth is pulled from the lies, and when we feel the same pains and pleasures as the actors upon the stage--and... the actors that we see for ourselves in the mirror. Look closer, and you will find that there may be something there that wasn’t there before.
“But... I’m certain that you were already aware of that, Roi des Lions.” Rook’s lips stretched into a broad grin, a gleam of sunlight twinkling in his eyes. The kind of eyes that looked right through him.
Unnerving, Leona thought, a chill causing his fur to stiffen.
“Of course, if you struggle to find that connection, I would be more than happy to recommend a few titles! I believe you would enjoy a number of historical films. We could have a whole movie watching party to ourselves! I would be ecstatic to discuss the intricacies of...”
“No thanks.”
“You needn’t refuse! No need to be shy! Come now, I wish to get to know my beloved classmate better~”
“What part of keep your nose out of other people’s business don’t you get?”
“... D’accord,” Rook agreed, playfully holding both of his hands up. “My business is hereby minded!”
A (relieved, annoyed?) sigh hissed out. “If only you stayed like this all of the time, my life would be so much easier.”
The corners of Rook’s mouth quivered with delight. “Ah, and there it is--your ‘truth’, Leona-kun. Elusive, but as beautiful as the dawn to a new day.”
“Yeah, yeah. You’ve run your mouth plenty enough as is. It’s about time you packed up and cleared out.”
“Oh...!!”
Leona practically chucked a broom at Rook, a flurry of white petals fluttering to the ground as the birthday boy seized it. Sturdy, with a good weight--the broom felt familiar in his hands, like a bird that had migrated home from the winter season. Soft as freshly fallen snow, petals as pale as the pages of an unwritten story.
“Beauté. This is a most wonderful bouquet. I am touched to be the recipient of such a dazzling arrangement!”
“Good for you. If you’re so excited, then best scram,” Leona urged him, “get out of here. Your birthday party’s waitin’ for you to appear and show off your flashy flowers.”
“Fufu, very well. The happiness of all the well wishes I’ve received shall propel me along the birthday road!” With a twirl, Rook easily mounted the broom. The flowers began to glitter, his feet smoothly lifting from the ground.
Leona managed a strained smirk. Finally, he’ll be out of my hair.
Then, a few feet into the air, Rook uttered something that made his stomach drop.
“I shall see you for that movie viewing party tomorrow!!” Rook called, plucking a flower from his broomhead and tossing it to Leona. (It landed on his face and limply fell off onto the sidewalk.) “1:00 pm, in the Savanaclaw lounge!”
“Oi, I don’t recall agreeing to that. And when did you decide those details?!”
But Rook (that bastard) was already too far away, too high up (though Leona knew for a fact that with his superhuman hearing the huntsman could hear him, he was just choosing to not respond). Gritting his teeth, the beastman bolted after Rook, shouting after him.
“Who the hell would show up to that?! I’m being serious, I’m NOT havin’ this…! If you show up, I’ll have the fresh meat toss you out, so you’d BETTER not!! Are you even listening to me?!
“LAY OFFFFFFF….!!”
Up in the air, Rook laughed to himself. “It’s good to see him in such high spirits!”
He peered up from the brim of his hat, lifting his head to the horizon.
The sun was up, touching everything in its path with a golden glow. Honey outlined tufts of cotton candy pink clouds, the sky pale cornflower blue. Pastel colors, soft shapes.
How beautiful.
He flung out his arms, embracing the day. Sunlight spilled over him, illuminating a face as bright as his character.
For as much danger as his precarious position posed, Rook Hunt was the only man capable of dancing with it.

Why I got back into Over the Hedge.
So I can't sleep, why not write.
Over the Hedge was for a while a movie that, up until a few months ago, has been relatively unimportant to me. I remember seeing it once when I was a kid, and I do remember playing the hell out of the video game (I even beat it once in an entire day one summer), and that's about it.
It was always a movie that I found good as a kid, and for a while I never went back to it because I didn't want my childhood ruined. Granted I usually grew up with a lot of Disney and Pixar movies, so bad childhood movies were going to be hard to come by. I guess the closest was I think Snow Buddies, but even then it's more generic than anything.
Okay, getting off topic, Over the Hedge I didn't go back to for a long time because I didn't want to think the movie was lame nowadays. Granted I thought about it a few times, mainly because I liked the names RJ and Ozzie, and I used them whenever I wanted to make a neat OC that I would inevitably forget about in less than two weeks, but aside from that, nothing really prompted me to go back, which eventually resulted in me pretty much forgetting about it.
That was until a few months ago...and it involved a certain fan-favorite Opossum.
You see, on Left 4 Dead, there's a workshop where you can play as other characters. They can range from meme characters, to anime characters, to video game characters, and of course, animated movie characters. That of course is where this starts.
I had to find a model that would replace either Francis or Louis since my friends were sick of the model I was using. In case you were wondering, I was using this model:
Tumblr media
Terrifying, I know.
It was funny to me at the same time. However, the biggest problem with it was that it was way too big and pretty much took up half their screens whenever they looked at me. So I had to find another model that would fit…I decided to use Louis this time, and then I found…this.
Tumblr media
I decided why not, got it, realized that it had the exact same issue with Thumper the Monster Bunny, yet ignored it for some reason, and with the model, we beat the challenge, and everything was fine. That was until I really started thinking about it.
Why did Heather of all characters get a model in this game? In fact, while doing research for this video, it turns out she's the SECOND DreamWorks character to have a Left 4 Dead 2 character model, and the first was Shrek. Speaking of which, she now has TWO character models for survivors, and she's only second to Shrek who has only three.
LET ME REPEAT, SHE IS SECOND TO SHREK.
Anyways, this really got me thinking about what was the whole appeal of her, because I recently rewatched the movie and let me tell you, she probably has the least amount of screen-time in the film. Yet, she's the only one of the cast to have a model in Left 4 Dead 2 (at least until Ozzie was also ported), that was also ported to GMod?
That's when I started to look at the fandom more, and I realized that last year the subreddit had a bit of a resurgence when it came what I like to call "Heather-posting".
Tumblr media
Posts about Heather were all over the subreddit, and not only that, they were some of the highest upvoted there. The image I'm providing is only the second highest, with 265. Granted that doesn't seem like much compared to others, but it's still noticeable. In fact, Heather is the main focus of nearly half of the highest upvoted posts.
Not only that, she's also fairly popular on DeviantArt, and even more surprisingly (and also thankfully), there's no...weird stuff involved there I've seen.
Have you ever heard the term "Ensemble Darkhorse" in TV Tropes? It's when a character who is rather minor or unimportant to the main plot get a massive following. Heather pretty much ticks all those boxes, and it's probably one of the most surprising ones I've seen.
How powerful is it overall? Well, I actually decided to make a character based on Heather and put her in a Hell's Kitchen roleplay. I didn't exactly expect to get far, or even really be that noticed.
Tumblr media
Heather actually won.
She won.
Not only that, she actually had two people have a crush on her, one male, one female. That's actually wild.
In the midst of all that however, it resulted in me taking another look at the movie itself, finally looking to see if it lived up to the vindication it had been receiving recently.
Turns out that yeah, it's still a great movie. It's not going to be better than something like The Last Wish or Shrek 2, but it's a film that, in my opinion, has no real flaws. Maybe the cast could be a bit smaller, like remove the porcupine family so there could be some more screentime for Heather and Ozzie, since they're the two more popular characters compared to them. Despite this, the cast itself is likable, the story is easy to follow, the satire and visual humor is really funny, and man for Dreamworks film the movie looks absolutely GORGEOUS.
Of course, there's also the banger music, with Heist and Family of Me being my two favorite songs in the film, and it always inspires me to write about the gang and their wacky hijinks.
Oh yeah, the writing stuff. Yeah, I never actually wrote a lot of Fanfiction in my life, I usually kept it original for the most part. I think the only thing Fanfiction-y I've ever wrote was some absolutely hot dog water, dumpster fire trash about...
Sonic OCS.
I'm shivering just thinking about it.
Regardless, my writing has improved a ton, so at the very least I could do the gang justice by not looking like I just half-assed my writing whilst working on writing comedy, which is a style I've never tried before.
And let me tell you, it is really fun to do.
So yeah, what started as a simple dive into a character that I didn't expect to be popular, soon turned into a genuine appreciation for a movie that had at one point been treated as merely an afterthought, as well as a new love for writing comedy detailing the wacky misadventures of some fun characters.
That is why I got back into Over the Hedge.
Speaking of which, I've also been collecting some old merchandise from Over The Hedge, and let me tell you, some of that is real interesting...

hi! ik you’re probably busy and stuff so don’t sweat it if you can’t answer, but i recently read your star wars warrior nun au, and i absolutely loved it. i haven’t watched the movies and stuff in a suuuuuper long time, and your fic really brought that love back, and i was wondering if you would be able to tell me what order i should watch things or which books to read and stuff? again, dw if you can’t respond!
oh! i can absolutely do that. keep in mind that this is going to be my own personal watch order based on how canon works best and resonates thematically for me 🥰 i’ll just make a list i think.
you will notice that i’m not going to say that you should watch things in order. frankly, i don’t think that’s the best star wars experience, but! there should be loads of articles online detailing how to watch chronologically if you decide to do that.
anyway, here we go!
1. the original three! that’s A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi. i really truly think that this is the best starting point even on rewatch. just… something about having this as the centrepiece works so well. everything else orbits it and contextualises (and recontextualises) it.
2. the prequels, starting with The Phantom Menace. the prequels are a tragedy 🙂 yes, a very fun tragedy with my best boy obi-wan at centre stage, but it works because you’ve seen the original trilogy and you know what’s going to happen but you’re transfixed by it anyway, by the fire as it eats at the fabric of the story.
3. at this point, you can watch The Clone Wars (the animated move & series) if that’s your jam. i haven’t seen those but i’ve heard incredible things about them. (if anyone wants to chime in on where they think TCW fits in here, that’d be appreciated!)
HOWEVER where i tend to go next is the Kenobi series! it’s perfectly poised between the prequels and the originals. plus i really loved it 😌
4. then Andor. good god. it’s a masterpiece. there’s a second season coming, but it flows beautifully into
5. rogue one. my personal favourite star wars movie. it’s just… stunning, beautiful, tragic. in the timeline it fits between Andor and A New Hope.
6. i really recommend either playing or (if that’s not your thing) watching a youtube playthrough (i recommend no commentary, but that’s up to you) of Jedi: Fallen Order and Jedi: Survivor. my fic is based on these games, but very, very loosely; you won’t be spoiled for Luminous Beings by watching this. there’s a great book set between the two games called Battle Scars. it’s a lot of fun.
7. then the Rebels tv show followed by the new show, Ahsoka!! Rebels is wonderful (i am only halfway through) and i’m gleefully intrigued by what i’m seeing of the Ahsoka show so far. i definitely would recommend also watching The Clone Wars before this, because it sets up Ahsoka’s character!
8. the mandilorian is really good! it’s set after the originals but before the… sequels. might as well address those 😔
8. the sequels - starting with The Force Awakens (a Good movie, actually) - are… complicated to me. i loved the promise of the first one but the others REALLY let me down. the last two are decent action movies with some good characters (finn’s plotline in the second movie is genuinely really good, just too sidelined for my liking. they could have done so much more). basically, you can watch them, and i think you SHOULD watch The Force Awakens, but as star wars movies the last two i… really don’t like.
(there’s a ton of canon games and books and tv shows i’m forgetting after this, but i’d say for me personally this is the structure and the star wars stuff that i really like to revisit over and over. Knights of the Old Republic is an amazing, if old, video game set waaaaay back before the prequels. it’s great if you like viddy games)
i appreciate the faith in my opinion 🥰 and the love for Luminous Beings. i hope this is helpful!

Escaflowne the Movie (2000)
Tumblr media
I’m probably dating myself immediately by choosing this movie, but it’s what came to mind after a joint last night. I recommend watching (at least) the opening scene of this film up until the title comes on at around 5:20. You can watch it here. I will spoil the movie, though, so here’s your warning. Also, this movie deals with heavy themes such as depression and nihilism. If that isn’t your thing, run awaaaay!
Where was I? Oh, right-
So, why this movie? Well, let me paint a lil’ picture for you. (With words, I don’t wanna paint rn, sorry.)
I was 10 or 11 when Escaflowne came on TV one night, I think. (This painting sucks, leave me alone.)  I remember it being faaairly late, and I was fiending for anything with the vibe of Dragon Ball or Cowboy Bebop. Though I didn’t know it at the time, it was anime that I wanted to watch. I felt like a cool grown-up watching them because they had violence and adults smoking. Simpler times.
Escaflowne started much slower than I would’ve liked as a kid. Now, I can appreciate the time given to showing shots of the sky and the massive airship that dwarfs a damn mountain. But as a kid, I wanted something to happen.
I got my wish when this anime boy fell from the clouds. I’m like, where’d this guy come from? I’m locked in now. Suddenly he lands on the airship, and a guard is rightfully like, “Bro, who tf-“ SLICE! The guard is dead, and my lil developing brain decides, “Yup, here’s a core memory.” What proceeds is the most intense opening of a movie I’d seen up until that point. The drums kick in, and this anime boy runs into a hull full of soldiers and sprays everybody. The animation, choreography, music, and cinematography are outstanding. Truly unmatched stuff. I won’t go into detail here because I want to break this scene down later, but yeah, the anime boy’s lone assault on this airship is incredible.
Tumblr media
I NEVER got that opening scene out of my head. It started my obsession with anime guys and their samurai swords before Samurai Champloo, and solidified my appreciation for airships/sky battles. Maybe it’s because I recently beat “Tears of the Kingdom,” but I’ve been thinking more and more about how I like fighting in the sky. (Not irl, though.)
Now the thing is, the opening scene is ALL I ever remembered from the movie. I could recall elements of the rest of the film, like the fact that there were giant robots, but the story and characters never stuck. And that’s why I decided to rewatch this as an adult and figure out why.
Here we go!
I won’t dissect the entire movie beat for beat. It’s tempting, but I want to discuss the story and its themes today. I’ll need to let you in on another small fact to do that. This movie is an adaptation of an anime TV series called “The Vision of Escaflowne.” I didn’t know that until last night because while watching it, I could see the story introducing many elements and dropping them just as quickly, so I googled it. At this point in my life, I’ve watched many films based on books. You can just tell after a while. What’s interesting, though, is that this adaptation took a lot of liberties with the source material. I only knew this version, so I’m judging it on its merits.
I’m also ghetto, so here’s Wikipedia’s summary.
“Hitomi Kanzaki is in crisis. Her life has lost its meaning, and she is plagued by unusual dreams. She is depressed and wants nothing more than to disappear. After falling out with her only friend, she is mysteriously summoned to another world, Gaea, where she finds herself inside Escaflowne, a doomsday weapon destined to come to life at the appearance of a prophesied "wing goddess". The world of Gaea is facing its own crisis: relentless conquest by the Black Dragon Clan, the rebels against which become convinced that Hitomi is the prophesied goddess who will revive Escaflowne. Never certain of her identity in Gaea, Hitomi finds her destiny as she becomes closer to the rebel leader, Lord Van, and helps to bring about the fall of his vengeful brother Lord Folken, the master of the Black Dragon Clan.”
Say thank you to Wikipedia! ...I’m sorry if this is annoying to read.
Anyway, I’ll say that’s a reasonably exciting story! Maybe not now when tons of Isekai have done it arguably better in all these years, but It’s interesting. A depressed person with the power to make or break a world? What a concept! Indeed it’s enough to make you curious. I’m gonna stop talking like this now.
Nihilism is the name of the game in this film. Each major player (Hitomi, Van, and Folken) represents different stages of it. Whereas Hitomi deals with how much modern-day living sucks, Van and Folken’s conflict involves war and their entire world. That said, Hitomi was ready to self-destruct in her introductory scene due to her depression. VERY HEAVY. After the opening scene's thrill, this was like whiplash. None of this stuck with my childish brain; I was very dumb. Thankfully, the imagery was not disturbing (otherwise, it probably would have), but the stuff she said resonates with me now.
Tumblr media
Ultimately, she finds she’s not alone in feeling this way, as Van is similarly alone in his world as the sole heir to his kingdom. He has only known struggle thanks to his dickhole older brother, who is coo-coo-crazy with his nihilism, and is hell-bent on taking the whole world out with him. Hitomi and Van only defeat Folken thanks to finding and understanding each other. …Except they don’t defeat him… in fact, the story and many of the themes get kinda screwy.
I’ve buried the lead, but in my opinion, this movie starts off strong and then drops the ball. I will say I liked what the story was doing. The theme, learning that you’re not alone when you’re depressed, is beautiful. Sure, one can argue that it oversimplifies a real issue, but stories can do that. I see stories as extensions of their creators. The writing is genuine here. Hitomi’s dialogue in the intro was legit and also beautifully directed. I’m definitely assuming here, but if this is how the writers chose to tell the story of someone struggling with depression, I won’t dismiss it because they didn’t match how I feel you should write about it.
The problems I had were more on the missed potential side. And letting dialogue take the place of visual storytelling. The first act had me completely engrossed. I couldn’t take my eyes off it. The troubles started to arise when they started introducing maaaaany characters. I started to lose track of them. I love ensemble casts, but in a 90-minute movie, they’re not all going to get to shine. This is only a problem for me when I actually LIKE the characters. (which I did, the freakin goobs) So if they were to… suddenly eject from the plot, I’d be sad. This is where the film, initially being a show, reared its ugly head. Van is part of a resistance group, but he’s not even the leader. I don’t know why the Wikipedia synopsis said that.
Thanks, Wikipedia.
You find this out after his and Hitomi’s introductory scenes. They throw this lovable gang of misfits at you, and they do it well. I was on board and was even starting to worry for them because I knew a dark fantasy story had the potential to kill off mains. None of them die, though. In fact, around the halfway point of the movie, they all become completely irrelevant. The actual leader? Diet-Sephiroth? He can keep UP with Van, who is, on all accounts, a killing machine. They seemed to think showing us this was important. Too bad he’s useless by the movie's midpoint, too, because he never has to show that strength again. They don’t even get a scene at the end where they tell Hitomi goodbye. Why the hell were they even there? Why did we spend any time learning about them? I’m sure they get more relevancy in the show, but this isn’t the show; it’s a movie. A movie that purposefully isn’t anything like the show, either. From what I read, this movie cut a lot of the fat from the show, but I guess this couldn’t be helped. That said, there’s a scene where a VERY detestable character gets a farewell scene. Why him and not Van’s crew? I’m very upset, lol.
Tumblr media
So what happens when the crew is gone halfway through the movie? Well, Hitomi and Van bond. But… not in any way that’s immediately noticeable. This is my major, major issue. Too many characters tell Hitomi things about Van before we see them bond. I really wish she’d SEEN that he wasn’t such a bad guy instead of people telling her. They also tell her the whole point of the movie, which is a no-no for me. The lion dude is straight up like, “Yeah, Van wants to die.” He may as well have said, “Just like you did earlier in the movie because he’s depressed too.” I was hoping she’d learn this from her interactions with Van himself, but up until this point in the movie, they don’t interact much. This is where my tastes come in, as I want to grow attached to the main characters in a story. Hitomi and Van, despite being very profoundly written in this film, are only their sorrow, it seems. Hitomi, at least in the beginning, is less so. But Van is about as interesting as a wall in this movie. (A wall that can fight good, mind you, but fight good is not a personality trait.)
Stories about emotionally stunted, stoic-lite dudes that need a woman to show them how to care make me cringe. I can’t help it; it’s just not my thing! “Man strong, he need woman to lie head on.” I personally think that’s weak irl, so stories like that don’t resonate with me. To each their own. I think it could’ve at least been done a bit more tastefully. But heeey, this movie is a 2000’s movie, baybee, and hindsight is, of course, 20/20. In the movie’s defense, though, Hitomi and Van don’t seem to develop feelings or intimacy beyond understanding one another, so that’s why I could keep going! One could even say the stoic dude thing wasn’t their intention! But that’s the problem when you don’t give HIM (Van) any agency, and everyone talks about him like they did. I forgot he wasn’t a machine until ⅔ into the film.
I gave it some thought, and the only reason this bothered me was that Van’s humanity was all there, but AFTER these scenes with Hitomi being told about it. Van DOES open up and IS a good guy in a bad position. There’s a scene where he sculpts a figurine for one of the crew members. I actually love how the scene was directed because you couldn’t tell he was doing it. It was a reveal. And a very good reveal, to me. I enjoyed that! If they had put that scene earlier than it was placed, that could’ve been the visual moment to know that he’s not all “kill, kill, destroy.” But it wasn’t new information where it was placed. The movie said, “Sorry, I know Van seemed a lil coo-coo-crazy initially, but we promise you he’s a protagonist.” And I’m like, “I knoooow, you told me so many times that this seems redundant now.” Okay, I’m done with my lil rant.
The intention to make Hitomi and Van two peas in a pod was great, but it felt like Hitomi didn’t think he was tight until he saved her and was told multiple times Van’s cool... After that, she becomes a “Van’s the Man fan girl.” So if you look past all that, they bond, and it’s nice. But the rest becomes kind of a slog. Characters are introduced and given nothing; Before I end this, lemme talk about Folken real quick. His motivations were weird. Basically, he hated the world? And wanted it destroyed by the apocalyptic arrival of Hitomi. The head-scratching came from the fact that he didn’t need her to fuck up the world. He was doing a pretty good job being evil and ruining everyone’s lives without her. His misinformation about their lil prophecy was his own undoing. In fact, he knew he was going to die and welcomed it. The prophecy said he’d die, but it didn’t say how it would happen. I guess he wanted it to be Hitomi, but she was like a school girl so that didn’t happen. Lol, sorry, bro. I skim over stuff all the time; these are the results. The plot was “Folken was wrong about everything.”
So, due to being wrong about everything, Folken is betrayed by one of his own soldiers and KILLED lol. If you didn’t watch, you’re probably like wow that’s underwhelming. But if you SAW how impossibly powerful they made Folken seem, this is even more of a wet slap on your cheek. His climactic battle with Van and Hitomi is underwhelming because they don’t fight. It seems like, through Hitomi’s influence, Van no longer wants to be a fighter ANYWAY. He just wants peace. But the movie definitely made it seem like they were all going to fight more. I guess I like climactic fights if you give me too powerful badasses. Theme be damned, lol. That’s not a fair critique, but it’s what I wanted. Not a single clash of a sword between Van and Folken. The ending just had me scratching my head. After the lack of character stuff, all I was looking forward to was a sick animated fight, and I didn’t get it. There are more things I could nitpick, but ultimately it was the lack of believability in Van and Hitomi’s relationship that kept this from being a classic in my eyes. I’m fairly lax about plot shit when the characters are hitting, but if I’m bored of your mains, I don’t care, yo; I’m going to sleep. So much potential, though!
There are a few scenes I’d like to go over in detail because, despite the movie’s lack of a satisfying whole, there were some REAL TASTY parts. But I’ll do that in another post, as this one is too long now. I’d say at the end of it all, I did learn something about my own tastes. And now you did too. Thanks for reading if you got this far!

I got tagged by @kosmosxipo to answer some questions so let's do that lol
Last song: Southern Cross by 403.
This song was in an old flash animation called Nightmare City. It was one of the earliest animations I ever saw on YouTube and I'm really nostalgic for it nowadays.
Favorite color: it was purple most of my life but now it's shifted towards red. Shout out to orange tho. Bright traffic cone orange is very underrated.
Currently watching: Right now I'm watching Pyrocynical's 4 hour long video about halflife 3. I've recently caught up on Quinton Reviews last Sam&Kat video. I don't even want to know how many hours I've put into hearing that guy talk about nickelodeon sitcoms lol
Last movie: I don't watch a lot of movies tbh. Last one in theaters was the FNAF movie. I recently watched a dinosaur documentary I don't remember the name of, and I rewatched Emesis Blue again. I count that.
sweet spicy or savory: depends on the last thing I ate. Usually I go for savory but if I just had savory I will need something sweet. I'm not a fan of spicy.
Relationship: happily single but I got that Blorbos™ disease
Current obsession: a webcomic called The Property of Hate. Absolutely beautiful story about a duo of idiots trying to save a world where imagination is reality. Other than that I've been getting back into Animorphs, reading the new comics and listening to a podcast about it. And maybe we can count DENTMAN? Brush your teeth.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Last Google search: Info on Slowking in Pokémon Sleep. I just got a good Slowpoke in Pokémon Sleep with two ingredients slots for Slowpoke Tails. I wasn't sure if it was better to evolve it into Slowpoke or Slowking. Here she is :)
Tumblr media
I get to tag people now. Feel free to answer these same questions if you'd like!

Time for a fandom check! What's going on in the One Piece world lately?
Good to see the manga coming back from break (hope your eyes are doing better, Oda). Chapter 1088 isn't up as of the time of this post, but last week's chapter was alright. Chaos all over Pirate Island, seeing more of Garp's backstory, plus all that sweet deeplore. Things have been pretty exciting so far, and you can tell things are building up to "the end" with all that's going on. But as cool as all this is, I can't help but be all "when are they gonna get to the Laugh Tale factory?? *sob sob*"
Gear 5 is finally coming to the anime! I'm both excited and nervous about it. The teaser that's been going around looks great, but I don't know if they'll get the cartoony side of Gear 5 Luffy well. It's clearly based on Tex Avery-ass, Looney Tunes-ass western cartoons, and whenever an anime tries to do western style antics, it always comes out...weird. Weird and wrong. They wern't the ones who made Red Hot Riding Hood, so I guess I can't blame them. I heard they got some great anime directors for the Gear 5 premiere, so I'm sure it'll still look as immaculate as most of the other Onigashima episodes.
Crunchyroll is getting some of the more recent One Piece movies, which apparently include Film Gold, Stampede, and Film Red. I've already seen Gold, which is a super fun movie, and I saw Red in theaters. Stampede is the one I wanna see; I've heard there's lots of fanservice in it (not the hot kind) and was pretty good all around. I'd like to see that and maybe rewatch Red in English, which I assume they'll have.
okay bye

Scrunkore Media "Thread" 2023: Part 5
I got burnout and never got back into it so I'm hella simplifying it lol shit happens
Tumblr media
the scrunko core has burned out, rebooting
50) Wendell & Wild (Movie, 2022)
A lovingly crafted stop-motion animated movie with some good old kid-friendly horror vibes and a punky attitude, even starring a pretty nice transmasc character that I'm super happy to see. It's a nice story with a good visual style and a lot of heart, and I think Key and Peele being involved is pretty funny honestly. [4★]
51) Murder by Numbers (Switch, 2020)
Decent enough Picross game with a basic detective narrative stringing it together that I'm not really a huge fan of, but it does its job and I appreciate the adorable robot as well as some of its representation. And no idea how they got the composer from Ace Attorney and Ghost Trick, lmao [3★]
52) Pokémon Picross (GBC, Unreleased)
Yeah, this was better than the 3DS one, it's just basic Picross that doesn't do much (only real mechanic it adds is being able to change the music) but that's still better than the shitty mobile game model. They really should have just released this, it was straight-up finished and I even got a cart that works on original hardware because I think that's neat. [3.5★]
53) Paper Mario: The Origami King (Switch, 2020)
Going to be killed for playing this as my first Paper Mario but who cares, this game is cool in spite of its awkward battle system (which DOES kinda suck). Just a fun adventure with typical quirky writing and some surprisingly powerful moments, plus an excellent soundtrack, I'm sure some of the earlier games are better but I did play this one and did enjoy it. [4★]
54/55) Knives Out/Glass Onion (Movies, 2019/2022)
Incredible pair of detective movies, both full of really engaging writing and directing work that keeps you invested and never stops being entertaining to watch, surely still really good on a rewatch too. They also really fuckin' hate rich people, especially the second one which is woke as hell and has one of my favourite endings in anything, so that's what some might call "based". I can't wait to see what Rian Johnson does for the third Benoit Blanc movie, which is apparently meant to be a 2024 release. [5★]
56) Sonic the Hedgehog (IDW Comics, 2018-Present)
These are some damn enjoyable comics, telling some fun and generally quite well-written stories set after the events of Sonic Forces with a cast of really cool characters. Honestly kind of ride or die for Tangle and Whisper, but original villains like Dr Starline are great to read too. Early highlight is definitely the Metal Virus arc, but the more recent stuff with Surge was excellent too. Safe to say the team behind these stories know their shit. [4.5★]
57) Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Movie, 2023)
They really did it, they went out of their way to make a bigger and better sequel to one of the greatest animated movies I've seen, and it's very possible that they succeeded... but we won't know until the second part comes out, which looks unfortunately unlikely to be any time soon because production sucked. Still, what we did get is yet another gorgeously animated spectacle with a cool storyline, everyone knows that. [4.5★]
58) Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (Movie, 2023)
One of the only parts of the MCU that I cared about more or less concluded with this movie, and fuck it might be the best one in the trilogy. Rocket's harrowing backstory really hits out with that theme of some jerkass playing god, and the core adventure of the film is pretty engaging too, just as cool as ever. Plus it's now confirmed Vocaloid exists in the MCU lol [4.5★]
59) The Suicide Squad (Movie, 2021)
Another instance of James Gunn making an actual good superhero movie, this time making a good adaptation of something that previously had a bit of a shit one. I appreciate the kinda edgy nature of the titular squad that was handled solidly here, and their antics are honestly pretty funny. Fun action sequences too, and it's honestly really cool how much the movie thinks rats are awesome (they kind of are tbh). Peter Capaldi, the best version of Doctor Who, playing a mad scientist role is also just... really good. [4★]
60) Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio (Movie, 2022)
Man fuck Disney, this is obviously the best version of the Pinocchio story and their attempt to overshadow it was lame as hell. I quite like the darker take on the story with themes of death and war around Italy's rise of fascism (Tom Kenny Mussolini is crazy btw), and of course the stop-motion animation is really quite excellent. Always love to see movies made in such a way. [4★]
61/62) Sonic and the Secret Rings/Black Knight (Games, 2007/2009)
Yeah, I get why the storybook duo of games have a bad reputation, because the motion control gimmicks kinda suck, but Secret Rings suffers from it far more than Black Knight, and that still has the cool ideas and solid writing combined with a great soundtrack (both games have this). Maybe the mission-based level structure isn't great, but there's some fun stuff to be found in these. Wish they were better though. [2.5★/3.5★]

How do you feel about Mario from the original Mario movie?
THANK YOU SO MUCH. thank you so much for asking me this question oh my god thank you so m uch
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now. It depends which one ur talking about because there’s that live action one that sucked and then there’s the anime one.
Probably the live action. I’ve actually never seen the live action one, I was always told it was bad, the closest I’ve come is having someone over a discord call relay the plot to me for an hour so there’s not much I can say in terms of how it depicts Mario because like.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don’t know this guy. I’ve never met this man in my life. If I ever do watch it (which I plan to, at some point(everyone hop on hyperbeam rn)) I will update you all I’m sure but I’m not too keen… it does not look very good I’m so sorry
NOW. If we’re talking about the anime one. Dude I love this thing. It’s a bit strange especially watching it AFTER you watch the new one. I feel like a lot of old Mario content doesn’t really have the same like. Identity if that makes sense? It’s all really bizarre and doesn’t really feel the same anyway. I’m rambling (I’m always rambling)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I LOVE LOVE LOOVE this depiction of Mario sm. He’s so sweet and cute. He’s not as brave as he is depicted now, in the beginning of the movie he needs a bit of encouragement to stand up to bowser but I find it. So. endearing? Idk. This movie is just. Super silly and a super fun watch. I haven’t ever posted about it and that’s because I only watched it for the first recently but I really like it.
And just. While I’m on the topic of old Mario’s can we talk about the super show
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He is the definition of. ‘Just some guy’. I can’t watch this show without feeling like I’ve just experienced something I’m not supposed to. Genuinely it fries my brain in like. The best way possible. Things just happened and they are never normal. But I do like that he’s like. Depicted a little bit older in this one? I heard somewhere that when Mario was first designed he was based on somebodies landlord- and he was meant to be sorta middle aged (don’t quote me on this I could be lying to you so hard rn) but now he’s like. 26 I just think the de-aging of Mario is interesting. and also the live action scenes where he’s played by a PRO WRESTLER ARE YOU KIDDING ME.
Tumblr media
And like. Not that you asked I’m glad we got the new movie. This is like. My favourite movie of all time (I rewatch it so often because I am UNWELL) and it’s also one of my favourite depictions of Mario maybe ever. If I get into it I’ll probably just reiterate everything I have ever said about him so I will simply leave it at he’s perfect, and I love him, he’s everything to me.

tagged by @smfstump!! thanks whiz :)
last song: through the valley by shawn james
favorite color: red!!! definitely the color i own the most of, and a bit of a signature one tbh
currently watching: i am literally in the middle of watching the hunger games: catching fire right now, but in terms of shows, there's a few i'm (very slowly) watching with various friends. one friend and i are watching the loki show as it airs as well as the justice league animated show, another friend and i are slowly making our way through severance (i think we have four episodes left? i'm in love with irv and burt already), and another friend and i are rewatching avatar: the last airbender (we're currently on the ba sing se arc of book two)
last movie: outside of catching fire, last movie was anatomy of a fall which i saw earlier today and would DEFINITELY recommend. love a good courtroom drama. also going to see the killer in theaters tomorrow!!
currently reading: killers of the flower moon, and i'll probably start a hunger games or a percy jackson reread soon as they're both on my list
sweet/savory/spicy: sweet!!! all of these flavors are good flavors but i've got a major sweet tooth :)
current obsessions: idk if i have a singular one at the moment? i'm always thinking about star wars so i guess that but it's died down a bit recently, but otherwise it's mostly just all of my speculations and excitement for the new oscar szn movies coming out soon!!! oh and also christmas. i spend all of november and december obsessing over christmas, and i started a bit early this year (they were putting up the lights downtown today!! what can i say!!!)
last thing I googled: matthew perry :(
Currently working on: fan wise? not much of anything! super busy at work with a lot of projects there but haven't had much inspiration recently to create, though due to previous christmas obsession i have been musing only in my head about 1) a sambucky fic based on a christmas to remember by dolly and kenny rogers where bucky works at a ski lodge and sam visits with sarah+the kids for christmas and they have like a lil hallmark movie plotline and 2) a kind of angsty steve centric steggy fic inspired by i'll be home for christmas where catws era-ish steve reminisces on the christmases spent with peggy during the war and some of the hopes for future christmases they never got to have. i will probably write neither of these

hiiii <3 big ask big answer is what i'm expecting would LOVE to know your top 5/faves across various media that are new(in release or just new to you) this year! so: shows, movies, games, books, songs/albums, new artists you've discovered etc
OMG AAAAA I LOVE THIS ASK
brief comment i wanted to make, but this was the year i finally took control of my mental health and went to go see someone about it so congratulations to me for finally breaking down the wall of "im fine" and allowing myself to admit that i could use some help. that aside, lets get into it! beware, possible spoilers
MOVIES
1. Nope (dir. Jordan Peele) - this movie surprised me so much and reflects a LOT of my views on performative/spectacle-like behavior in front of the Camera and the effects things like hollywood or social media could potentially have on people...not going to get into that but i just liked the movie alot okay
2. X (dir. Ti West) - love me some camp. love mia goth. i also really liked Pearl and cannot WAIT for MaXXXine, i am so ready
3. Cruel Intentions (dir. Roger Kumble) - i dont think 2022 was the first year i watched Cruel Intentions but everytime i watch it, it feels like something brand new...i am so compelled to read the book that its based on like seriously
4. Turning Red (dir. Domee Shi) - this is the only Disney movie that exists to me...the mother-daughter relationship portrayed here is just so personal
5. Kiki’s Delivery Service (dir. Hayao Miyazaki) - yeah im extremely late to watching this lol. i watched literally every other ghibli film growing up but somehow, in some way, skipped over Kiki. so i watched it over the summer as an adult and needless to say...yeah i missed out as a kid asjashd
6. American Psycho (dir. Mary Harron) - this is the funniest film ive seen this whole year. im not even kidding
TV SHOWS
1. Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul - never thought id enjoy a show about a middle-aged white male turning to meth production to make ends meet and becoming the most annoying character ever created, but here we are. loved it, and literally EVERYONE around walt deserved so much better (jesse, gus, johnny/saul, mike, skylar, marie, hank)
2. Ranma 1/2 - ive taken a break from watching new anime this year and started diving into older ones. i love ranma simply bc its a bit ahead of its time and is just so easy to digest. just a fun little show!!! a great way to take my mind off of shit
3. The Sandman - just found out recently that this was a DC comic so congrats to DC for successfully infiltrating my anti-superhero visual barrier LOL. anyways i am in dire NEED of the next season
4. You - PENN BADGLEY. thats all im going to say. im a huge fan of Gossip Girl (2007) and as soon as i saw him playing the lead character i RAN to watch the first season when it dropped. was not disappointed
5. The Witcher - ive never played the game lol but the show is so good...im not a fan of GoT (and therefore will never watch HotD) so this show p much fills the dark fantasy void for me
6. Bridgerton - im so glad i got over my weird distaste and finally gave this show a try...i see the hype, i see it!! and the show itself is so beautiful to look at, despite being historically innacurate or whatever
7. Gossip Girl (2007) - ive watched and rewatched this show a grand total of maybe like....20 times in my life total. rewatched it again this year. all six seasons. it never gets old despite being the most ridiculous insipid shit ever. im also currently watching the new version, and while i love the cast and maybe the soundtrack, it doesnt match up to the campy and fun vibe that the first one had. it takes itself way too seriously and the plot is almost nonexistent lol
but anyway, lets move on to music!! im skipping over books bc i have currently finished NONE from the book haul i had back in october.
MUSIC
just gonna list out a bunch of songs that have carried me thru the last half of this year :]
ass like that victoria monet / bang (my body) chase icon / meta angel fka twigs / wish i never kehlani / king for a day pierce the veil, kellin quinn / pass the nirvana pierce the veil / antagonist nova twins / gibson girl ethel cain / like a tattoo sade / the perfect pair beabadoobee / so it goes tamino / daybreak’s bell l’arc-en-ciel / colors flow / distant tevomxntana, cayo / grapefruit tove lo
sorry if this is extremely long. thanks for asking!!!!!! ❤️

14, 20, 29 for artist ask game :3
14. Any favorite motifs
oh im like OBSESSED with snake motifs/imagery i cannot get enough of it. david lostboys is the last character i did it to but i think every fandom ive been in has had someone get blasted with the Snake Imagery Beam at some point. heres some samples
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
david lostboys of course
2. i wouldnt say im actively In the shinee/taemin fandom i just like the music but the mv this art is based on had a bunch of snake imagery it felt made for me
3. cunty darkiplier in the snake sleeves dress. it speaks for itself
4. this one is such a deep cut but if you recognize this image then youve been following me for too long and i need to give you money
20. Something everyone else finds hard to draw but you enjoy
sometimes i think hands are fun but thats cus i gave up on trying to make my hands look good a long time ago. and this is so broad but sometimes ill see artists say they absolutely loath coloring their art and it boggles my mind. like what do you MEAN thats literally the best part!!!
29. Media you love, but doesn't inspire you artistically
i think a lot of live-action movies i watch fall under this category. i dont watch a lot of movies in general, and when i do im often just rewatching animated movies to get my Art Brain to work again (shoutout to the lion king), BUT! sometimes i do watch a live-action one that i love so so so much and it doesnt influence my art at all. the social network is a prime example, i love the courtroom drama and media about people who Just Suck, but its not a genre i feel inclined to work in really. i think succession (which is a show not a movie but whatever) is the most recent thing like that for me, love that show to bits but its setting (big city w same-y buildings) and color grading (greys and slate blues and really just a lack of warmth) are like the antithesis of the stuff i like to draw
(from this ask meme)

Hey, I haven't been active a lot simply because I'm busy learning art and doing other things. But I watched Mario recently! Right after I watched it, I decided to make a review, and it ended up being pretty long. I never really posted movie reviews on my Tumblr, so, this one will be the first one that I post on this site.
Tumblr media
tl;dr - the Mario movie is the best video game adaptation of all time. It gets you excited, it gets you terrified, it gets you motivated. Fast-paced, but doesn't rush it too much. It hooks you in, and it is incredibly rewatchable. There are also two post credit scenes that are worth checking out.
I can tell you this now - there's never been a better movie adaptation of a video game than the new Super Mario Bros. animated movie. It is one of the most fun animated movies I've watched in a long time, filled with humor, charm and character.
While it wasn't necessarily close to any particular Mario game, it made good use of its elements. In my opinion, this kind of conversion from game to movie is the best one they could've done for Mario.
While the story is relatively simple, the interactions between the characters and the immersiveness of the movie compliment it well.
This movie is one of those rare cases where a kids movie would hook you in and kept you waiting for the next scene, the next event , the next chapter. It wasn't as predictable as I feared.
The Toads were as whimsical as the world they lived in, and Peach felt like a leader with lots of experience.
I felt a feeling of terror as Bowser was reciting his evil plans in front of his audience made entirely of familiar faces. I was extremely excited every time Mario bumped a Yellow Block to get himself a new power-up, and seeing the titular hero in a familiar power-up costume on the big screen filled me with delight.
Every character in the movie was given a personality of its own. I have no shadow of a doubt that every line of dialogue has been treated to tons of changes before the final cut - it seems Miyamoto and the team paid attention to everything.
I also feel like one of Miyamoto's goals with this movie was to make the movie explain previously unexplained phenomena in the Mario franchise - things that at first glance may not need an explanation, but as you grow up you realize how much these explanations would add to the lore and to the content of Mario's universe.
Some more things I like about it was its pacing, animation, dialogie, and tone. The inspirational message that this movie tells it's audience further adds to its charm.
This is a movie I'd be willing to rewatch - and that isn't something I'd say about a lot of kids movies, especially those based around video games.
All in all, I went into the theater with cautious optimism, and walked out with a large smile on my face, and a ton of thoughts about what I just watched that would take me hours to process. In a good way, of course.
I'm giving this an 8/10. I'm so glad that this collaboration was possible in the first place, and I am pleasantly surprised at the fact that it went as well as it did.
One last thing to note: if you're watching this in cinemas, stay until the very end, because what happens at the very end after all the credits are gone is going to be an exciting surprise for those who wanted more from this movie, but didn't get it.
I've been excited for the Mario Movie ever since it was announced for the very first time. And I definitely didn't expect my review of it to be this long! I'll be happy to read your thoughts on thisu. Thank you all for reading!
