Angel/Demon Batjokes AU
Don’t mind me, I’m just gonna transplant all my AU ideas from discord to tumblr.
Imagine an AU where Bruce is a demon trying to be good and receive redemption, and Joker is a fallen angel trying to get in his way and convince him it’s pointless to do so. Something something fallen angel / fell into a vat of acid parallel Something something Batman in bat costume / demon parallel
Alfred is also a priest in this.
Lore
The divine and demonic have had an ongoing truce since the death and resurrection of Christ. They are no longer allowed to interfere with mortal lives. This is why miracles haven’t visibly happened for around 2000 years, and why many humans don’t even believe in angels and demons anymore.
Some Truce stipulations:
No demon may interfere with mortal lives for the purpose of corruption.
No angel may interfere with mortals lives the purpose of redemption.
Demons and Angels may not enter each other’s realms.
Angels and demons inhabit a realm of moral paradigm based on a set of True Rules which governs where human souls end up after death. The more souls inhabiting their realm, the more power each individual demon/angel has. And of course, the better they can beat each other. So they each have a vested interest in gathering souls. This explains why they even care about humans at all.
There are rule-breakers on both sides. Angels trying to redeem humans, demons trying to corrupt them. There are also exceptions to the rules: there are those who are basically the police and try to stop rule breakers from interfering with mortals. And then there’s grey areas: demons and angels who don’t try for redemption/corruption, but live among humans because they are bored and they feel like it.
The divine and demonic are impossible to kill while inhabiting their respective realms. But on Earth, while they are still harder to kill than the average human, they are vulnerable. As a result, it is very rare for divine and demonic beings to actually live on Earth. If they die on Earth, they die permanently.
They wear human disguises to blend in with the human world. But the disguises make them even more vulnerable while on Earth than their true forms, so the disguises can break/blur when they feel threatened. They can kind of shift from looking fully human, to human with angelic/demonic traits... or actual demonic monsters & biblically accurate angels.
Bruce
Bruce is a demon seeking redemption, which is something entirely unheard of for the demonic. His parents were both demons living as humans, and so Bruce was raised in the human world and kind of accidentally adopted human values. When his parents were murdered, Bruce eventually wandered into a church and was taken under the (metaphorical) wing of human priest!Alfred, who believes everyone can be redeemed. Even a demon.
Bruce wants to redeem people. Bruce wants to redeem himself. He experiences a lot of internalized shame over what he is. He wants to be better. Bruce rigidly lives by the True Rules, and he would like others to live by them too. Because he wants people to go to heaven, and he would also eventually like to be allowed there too.
Bruce takes up the mantel of the Batman. He drops his human disguise somewhat when gliding around skyscrapers. He also doesn’t have many Batman gadgets like in canon, but his demonic powers compensate for this a lot. He dislikes using them though, because Bruce has internalized racism(?) about being a demon. He is capable of going full cryptid monster, but it’s extremely rare that he does this. He fears people figuring out he’s a literal demon instead of human. And he views angels as being literal superior beings. In a moral sense and cosmic sense. He thus, has really strange feelings about the Joker lmao.
Joker
Joker was an angel cop on a mission on Earth. He was disguised as a human in a gang of humans, because he’d heard rumors that a demon was out here interfering with mortals — which is against the rules. The demonic are not supposed to try to corrupt mortals by interfering with their lives.
This demon, was of course, Bruce. And neither demonic or divine had figured out wtf he was doing yet.
Here’s the thing; there’s a hilarious loophole to the rules. Angels cannot try and redeem humans. Demons cannot try and corrupt them. But there’s no rule that says an angel can’t corrupt, and a demon can’t redeem LMAO.
It concept wasn’t even considered because it’s antithetical to the natures of the divine and demonic to seek such a thing.
Until Bruce came on the scene, of course.
So it was a misunderstanding that fell out of hand very fast. Joker thought a demon was corrupting humans, when actually Bruce was doing his Batman thing. Batman was unaware that one of the humans in the gang was an angel in disguise. Joker was unaware that this mysterious potential demon wasn’t actually an evil entity.
Thus we get to the drama: they fight at ACE Chemicals like in canon. Bats thought he was fighting a human red hood gang member. Joker as Red Hood wore that big cape. By some split second of bad timing, Batman lands a hit on Joker which makes his disguise blur. In human form, Joker is more vulnerable, so when he feels truly threatened the angel form starts coming out.
It’s dark though, and while Batman has night vision demon sight, the chemical vats are pouring green steam and smoke making it hard to see. He throws batarangs at what he thinks is the cape, trying to pin Joker down and trip him up. It’s not the cape though. It was the wings. Severed. Joker screams in pain, stumbles, tumbles over the railing, yeeting himself right into the chemical vat.
Joker Forgets
Bruce tries to catch him, fails because he trips on something. He looks in horror as the man falls into the vat. Then he looks at what tripped him. Severed angel wings.
Joker falls into a vat of acid and forgets he was ever not human.
He follows canon pretty closely after that.
Since the wings are divine, they’re not like, anatomically attached to Joker’s back like normal bird wings. So he doesn’t actually have an extra set of shoulder bones in his back. They’re attached via magic or something. Doesn’t mean that they can’t get hurt, obviously. But it possibly does mean that stumps aren’t left behind. Or that there’s no scars. Or that the scars are perfectly circular.
Bruce keeps the wings along with the Red Hood in the batcave. Joker can still feel it when anyone touches his wings no matter where they are. Even though they’re not physically attached to him anymore. Bruce doesn’t often go around fondling his trophies, especially since the wings are so painful for him to look at. But sometimes he does.
Bruce: pets wings in the batcave Joker, 20 miles away in a hideout: what the F@CK?!?! Joker: involuntarily shuddering with ASMR
Joker Remembers
Alternatively: if Joker remembers, the wings may have fallen along with him into the vat and been burned away to nothing. He can’t return to heaven without his wings. Joker learns that Bruce isn’t even a bad demon. That he’s actually seeking redemption. He learns about the loophole in the rules. And he cannot stop laughing.
Joker is an agent of chaos. He knows the rules by which a human ends up in either realm. He tries to make humans break the rules deliberately so that he can kill them and they’ll end up in hell. He corrupts people not because that’s necessarily his goal, but because it opposes and annoys Bruce. Occasionally he does it because he thinks it’s funny. Corrupting the most innocent, the goodest people, because how ironic is it for someone to work so hard and be so good only to end up in hell?
Angels: do not be afraid. Angel Joker: be afraid.
Bruce knows the rules too. That’s part of why he’s so against killing.
People think Joker is human. And maybe Joker thinks Joker is human too, and so he does his best to embrace humanity as he sees it: and becomes the worst of them. Because he can no longer be the best of angels.
Other times Joker kills people whether they’ll end up in heaven or not. Joker doesn’t see why it matters where people end up. He was an angel, a divine being, and he lost his wings through no fault of his own. He ended up on Earth with the rest of these billions of worms despite his divine status. This was not supposed to happen. But it did. And it was so pointless.
And now a demon is trying to earn his way into redemption, which Joker finds hilarious because that’s also breaking the all important Rules which he has learned to completely disrespect. Following them did nothing for him — he’s Earthbound regardless. Even if Bruce did manage to redeem himself, the thing that happened to Joker could just happen to him too. All that work, for nothing. Why bother? Why not just have fun and reap all the laughs this world has to offer if working so hard could all be for nothing anyway? Bruce doesn’t know for sure if it’s even possible for a demon to earn redemption!
And maybe eventually it also turn into: Bats no... you CAN’T redeem yourself because if you did I’d be so lonely here on Earth 🥺 Don’t leave me
Robin, if he exists in this AU, is a human kid. All of them kids Bruce adopts are humans.
Joker possibly hates this because he sees humans as inferior, they don’t matter. Joker would do them a favor by killing them even, since they’d end up in heaven. And if it’s a heaven away from Bruce forever... well, two birds, one stone.

Some mouse who laughs au facts I thought up of
Mickey was just an ordinary mouse with an ordinary life. He had a good job, a wife who was expecting and two best friends who stick by him
One day, he saw something he shouldn’t have and had to do something so the criminals would make sure he doesn’t squeal
He had to be a scapegoat for them and unfortunately a superhero (the duck avenger) thought he was their leader and in trying to catch him, Mickey fell in a vat of thinner
The thinner isn’t actually thinner. It’s a nickname for some kind of chemicals. It made him deranged.
It also bleached his skin white. He uses makeup to hide it as a civilian but people think it’s the other way around
The mouse who laughs schemes are mostly impulsive pranks and shows in order to cheer people up and make them laugh. Everyone thinks he’s annoying however. Like a prank YouTuber.
Despite being a guy, his personality is more inspired by Harley Quinn than the joker. As well as Jinx from Arcane and Demencia without the obsessive love and Spinel without the angst (maybe 👀)
Mickey isn’t the first guy to put on the mouse who laughs costume. It originally belonged to his father, Julius, who with his sidekick (and friend) Alice, were known as the daring duo
The next was his older brother, Oswald. He was more of an anti hero but he still made people laugh.
But when it was Mickey’s turn, it was just before his one bad day
Mickey’s niceness hasn’t gone away. It’s still there even as the mouse who laughs
Instead of smiles, the mouse who laughs is obsessed with laughter. After all, that is a toon’s purpose
The mouse who laughs isn’t above laughing at himself
Bendy the dancing demon is his Harley Quinn
For Bendy’s backstory, he was a new toon on the block who fell in love with Mickey Mouse. When Bendy finds out Mickey is the mouse who laughs, he’s thrilled. He is a demon after all
Bendy acts like the tagalong kid like Steven universe in s1 and maybe 2. He is just the tagalong kid to the villain
Mickey likes Bendy but thinks of him as a little brother
Even if Mickey doesn’t love him the same way he does, Bendy is just glad to be by his side
Mickey and Minnie (as well as Donald and Daisy) are not a couple in this au but rather siblings and cousins. This explains not only why they look like gender swapped versions of each other but also leaves room for another ship if you know what I mean ;)
It’s Donmick, I ship Donmick
I mean come on, it’s this universe’s batjokes
Mickey starts off hating the duck avenger. He is such a wet blanket and he’s always raining on his parade.
But as time goes on, he actually starts to admire him. Whoever the duck avenger is, he must be brave to try and fight him. And he’s handsome too
Donald on the other hand, is more annoyed with the mouse who laughs. He’s so loud and obnoxious.
But he does have mortals and he can respect that. Kind of sweet to him too despite being enemies. Maybe a little cute?
How would Donald find out about Mickey’s secret identity? Why by his laughter of course
How would Mickey find out Donald’s secret identity? Well, he’s smarter than most people give him credit for. He was a detective in one life, you know
Despite being a villain, Mickey doesn’t actually think of himself as one. He sees himself more as a performer doing his job
That’s all I got

i made... a cringe ass self indulgent lego batman au...in which bruce/batman is a demon and joker is a fallen angel
joker got kicked out of heaven for “having too much fun,” in his own words, and bruce is way too good at his job. he comes across joker and hes so perplexed by this not-angel not-demon who doesnt fit in with anyone (and is proud of it) that he keeps coming back
also jokers shapeshifting is all fucked up on his left side, he has a hard time controlling it sometimes

Scarebat Fic Rec
Scarebat is a weird rarepair because despite my calling it that, it does have over eighty works on AO3. It just so happens that the vast majority of those works are for continuities I’m not interested in (mainly Gotham and Nolanverse). For my own reference and for the sake of anyone else who enjoys the pairing in a more comic-based continuity, I thought I’d put together a list of fanfics I’ve greatly enjoyed and reread often.
tell me your nightmares by gloriousmonsters
1.2k words, a oneshot from Scarecrow’s perspective exploring different occasions on which he’s been able to dose Batman with fear toxin. Very poetically clinical internal monologue from Crane about his experiments.
FT was useful as a weapon, delightful even, but it reached its full potential when Jonathan could use it as a tool of therapy. Take someone into its influence, through it down to their deepest fears; bring them into the light and let them run their course. Done properly it was an atheist’s exorcism; painful and ugly but a thing of beauty, where he played God and drew out the demons.
Put the Offer Out by @wander-over-the-words
5k words, an ambiguously-tentative established relationship oneshot from Bruce’s perspective with a reformed Scarecrow who works as a consultant at Wayne Enterprises. Deals with the potential fallout of the ever popular comic plotline of “Scarecrow becomes immune to fear.” Extremely southern take on Crane.
He supposes it’s fine for Jonathan to have a passion for something; he’s been obsessed with fear for so long, Bruce doubts any kind of therapy could get him over it just like that. It’s what he’d been doing with that obsession that had been a bad thing. So Jonathan can have his obsession, but what he needs is an outlet.
Mask Blindness and The Dating Game by @not-the-drones
A three chapter fic and its five chapter continuation, 26.8k words total, mostly from Bruce’s perspective. Not scarebat specific (they also feature batjokes and riddlebat) but Drones has a very fun take on Scarecrow’s character. AU where Crane was never fired from his position at Gotham University, and Scarecrow is his criminal dual identity.
Once inside, Bruce was pleasantly surprised by the interior. The soft light he just saw over Jonathan’s shoulders came from an old chandelier that dangled above the main hall. It seemed that the professor had opted to keep most of the original furniture, but did a decent job at restoring it. The tables, chairs, couches; all looked like they’ve been repainted and reupholstered, while keeping their period charm.
However, that did not stop Bruce from comparing it to the start of a slasher film.
he broke into my head (so i tossed the key and locked it) by @fairestwriting
5.8k words, oneshot from Scarecrow’s perspective. Being defeated by Batman has made him obsessed with payback, though he finds that revenge isn’t as satisfying as he assumed it would be.
Batman tore those things away from him, but maybe not because he didn’t understand. No, he saw the value in the manipulation of fear, that much was clear with how cautious the oh so brave dark knight was around him, almost like he’s walking on eggshells. The reason he opposed Scarecrow was beyond not understanding him, no, he had a motive, a drive. Maybe he didn’t even mind that he went so far for science, for power — Ah, no, he had a hypothesis his reason ran much deeper than morality, it was personal, selfish. It wasn’t something heros were made out of.

whenever im shipping something then at least one of the characters involved has to react to their feelings by
a. hating themselves
b. feeling guilty
c. having an existential crisis
this is why you'll catch me shipping spirk (spock "when i feel for you i am ashamed" himself)
or hero x villain ships (local hero attracted to villain they are supposed to hate/not have feelings for aka batjokes)
or a character who was previously at least performatively moral being corrupted by their love interest (hannigram anyone? what about roxanne x megamind?)
or two characters with a familial baseline relationship and one is feeling guilty to the point of near hating themselves for their attraction (sirius x harry? remrom? thorki?)
or a character who is nonhuman in some way fearing rejection or being hurt by their love interest should this come to light (clex, and also one character is a vampire/demon/werewolf/mermaid aus)
and im not saying all this is a metaphor for internalized queerphobia having to be overcome in a society where those who are Other are seen as morally repugnant and face ostracization and social/peer rejection and having to let go and embrace your true self and including any "wrong" feelings, but i really did go off and write like twenty nygmobblepot fics where ed tries and fails to fight his attraction to the penguin despite very clearly having feelings for him so there is that i guess
