References in the new episode!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Perfect isn't easy" from Oliver and Company! This is more of a homage than a reference, the lights around the mirror, the gloopy eye makeup. If you ever wondered what Medimedes would sing in a disney movie, go give the song a listen lol
Tumblr media
Alamo beer from King of the Hill! Best animated sitcom, been watching and rewatching it since I was like 10.
Tumblr media
This box in demo's room is a reference to how the dad in "A Christmas Story" pronounces "Fragile." Ok, this ones a deep cut and only funny to me so I didn't expect anyone to catch it. Now people just think I don't know how to spell fragile 😭
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The BLU team have some of Bean's Alcoholic Cider from "Fantastic Mr. Fox." (Taste just like liquid gold.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Otto and Jerma...❤️
Tumblr media
This was a reference to the blood testing scene in "The Thing" but I don't think I made that clear enough and it kind of looks like generic medical crap 😭
Ok I think that's all!

What kind of beverages (they don't need to fit within the DD universe) would the heroes drink? I feel like PD would be fascinated with the pearls in milk tea to a concerning extent. I want to give Abom a caprisun. Love your takes btw!!!
Alhazred: loves a good coffee, likes to try different types, but is very particular about the quality of the beans and torrefaction.
Josephine: gave Alhazred the hint of where to get his perfect 100% arabica, but is more of a tea girl. Her favorites are traditional indian chai and hibiscus kombucha.
Paracelsus: you are correct, she loves a good taro with tapioca pearls. She justifies it by listing the many benefits of mixing tea and milk, but really, she just likes the consistency and the funny balls.
Boudica: mead, of course, but also sports drinks like Gatorade. She needs to replenish her strength!
Barristan: milk and yogurt drinks, abides by the wisdom that you NEED to drink your milk to keep strong and healthy. Only one that thinks Yakult isn't gross.
Missandei: don't ask me why, but she strikes me as a milkshake girl. Like she treats herself with a big burst of sugar at the end of the day because, damn it, she works hard and she earned it!
Audrey: yeah, it's absinthe, big shock. She's also fond of cocktails, especially Death in the Afternoon.
Amani: citric juices. They give her energy and make her think of sunlight when she misses home.
Bonnie: mulled apple cider, hot enough to burn your tongue off. She finds it comforting.
Baldwin: enjoys all sorts of fragant herbal teas, especially flower-based ones.
Bigby: needs to discover hot chocolate IMMEDIATELY.
Damian: is a silly man that dislikes nice things. Only drinks fresh water and communion wine.
Junia: she'd love guaraná (guarana-plant based soft drink). It's fresh and sweet and bubbly and has no sinful/decadent implications. A guiltless pleasure.
Highwayman: distilled drinks like brandy, gin and whiskey. Likes coffee but unlike Alhazred is completely happy with the cheap stuff.
Reynauld: swears he actually likes those super healthy grain and nut based drinks. Nobody believes him.
Margaret: I'm thinking eggnog for some reason. Maybe because it's something you'd drink at a family party and she had a stable home.
William: makes the kind of vitamin that mixes everything under the sun. It's surprisingly good, though.
Sarmenti: gets obsessed with one drink for like three weeks then spends two years unable to look at it.
Edit: Fuck, I forgot Tardif
Tardif: loves sangria. It's alcoholic enough to get him buzzed but the sugar and vitamins in it are good to keep you from getting completely hammered or the dreaded wine hangover.

random ask: what is your go-to daily drink? your special occasion drink? detail delightful, recipe spectacular.
∧,,,∧ (  ̳• · • ̳) /    づ♡ I love you drinks [you're pretty cool though]
Thank you, inaconstantstateofchange!
My daily drink is coffee with a little milk. Before I broke my electric kettle, I made coffee with homeground beans in a French press. Nowadays I mostly drink instant. I should start using the French press to make cold brew.
My special little treat is usually lattes from a coffee shop. If I'm drinking on the go I get it with a flavored syrup, if I'm dining in I get it plain with a pastry. There's sweet and then there's too sweet, you know?
I don't drink alcohol much, but when I do it's usually beer or cider. Mixed drinks are okay if they're not too boozy-tasting.

what's your diet like? what do you eat?
I eat lots of fruit, veg and pulses (favourites: apples, apricots, cherries, pears, satsumas, bananas, grapes, mangos, pomegranates, avocados, carrots, peppers, chillies, broccoli, cauliflower, aubergine, cabbage, brussel sprouts, kale, green beans, sweet potatoes, artichoke, asparagus, sweetcorn, peas, lentils, chickpeas, kidney beans, black beans, etc) and whole grains (oats, barley, bulgar wheat, wild rice, quinoa). I like potatoes, pasta and noodles. I eat lots of nuts (almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, pistachios, pecans) and dried fruit (dried mango, cranberries, sultanas). I like pickled food (sundried tomatoes, pickled chillies, gherkins, capers, olives) and fermented food (kimchi, sauerkraut, miso, yoghurt). I eat lots of sourdough bread and need to start making my own!
I eat seafood (salmon, anchovies, trout, prawns) and meat (chicken thighs, lamb, pork chops). I try to avoid beef. I also try not to eat beef that often. I eat lots of eggs, and I like cheese (feta is probably my favourite, or goat's cheese). I use lots of vinegars (red wine, white wine, cider, balsamic) and lemon/lime juice in cooking. I want to get better at cooking tofu. I eat lots of honey (local).
I also drink lots of water and I like coffee, green tea, mint tea and green juice. I also like wine, and tequila. I take various supplements (calcium and vitamin d; a multivitamin; cod liver oil; iron; magnesium; q10).
I try to only drink alcohol twice a week, am working on getting more sleep, and also doing pilates to strengthen my joints. I have created a standing desk too so that I sit down less. when I brush my teeth I stand on one leg and then the other.
this year I am aiming to get my 10k run time to under an hour and also to be able to do crow pose in yoga, and to start swimming again.

if you get this, answer w/ three random facts about yourself and send it to the last seven blogs in your notifs. anon or not, doesn’t matter, let’s get to know the person behind the blog !
1. I had such a terrible experience with Redds Apple Ale that now I can't handle any kind of alcohol that is apple flavored or anything that's a cider because they remind me of the taste
2. When I was a kid my friend's older brother said "I'll try anything one or eight times" and I took that phrase to heart so seriously that I gained the ability to manipulate myself over time into enjoying and liking food that I used to hate. So now I can eat pickles, beans, tomatoes, pineapples etc
3. One time an old boss of mine told me that I "seemed like someone who would really like the number pad on a keyboard" and to this day I think about what vibe I could possibly give off that would make that thought pop into someone's head

Foods of Thedas: Prepared Ingredients
I separated these from raw ingredients because they either are foods/drinks on their own but are included in recipes, or involve a certain amount of cooking/processing to make them that separates them from those listed in raw ingredients. However, like with raw ingredients, I’ve only included items that are mentioned or shown in game for easy reference. Should you want to find additional and “speculative” ingredients you can visit this post or the master post.

Food is a topic we talk about often. You got any favorite food head canons or ideas for your Treasure island gang?
Shinju: Narezushi/鮓 (picked fish with salt and rice), lotus root, bamboo shoots, roast chestnuts, and plain rice.  She prefers savory/smoky flavors, and likes to put more spice into her food if they’re available.  Enjoys a glass of homemade kombucha/hung caa kwan/紅茶菌.  Has a moderate alcohol tolerance (about the same as Luka).
Luka: Whole roasted duck, beef, chicken, and fried dough sticks/yu char kway/油條. Seafood makes him a little nauseous if he eats too much, or if it has a weird texture, but he’ll tolerate it.  Holds his alcohol surprisingly well, but can’t drink more than one serving of stronger alcohols.  As for his favorite food from his homeland; he was used to eating TONS of meat since he came from the noble class (Shinju had to help him actually eat his goddamn vegetables when he started living with her and Feng) such as pastries filled with beef, lamb or goat.  He is also very fond of various cheeses, preferably soft to semi-hard cheeses.
Lee: Noodles (either made of rice, or sweet potato), loves his citrus fruits (will eat whole peeled lemons occasionally), dried nuts, and plain rice (he’s especially a fan of putting butter on it if it’s available).  Prefers chicken as a primary source of protein, but will eat beef on occasion.  Tends to be picky about what he eats due to being easily grossed out by jelly-like or gristly textures, but usually relents if he doesn’t have any other choice (or if you tell him that someone he cares about made it for him, he’ll eat whatever it is just to avoid upsetting said person).  He has the highest alcohol tolerance out of the bunch, and absolutely loves indulging in high-quality booze.
Feng: Rice porridge/jook/粥 with either mantis shrimp, or chicken and tea eggs.  During the New Years, he enjoys dried plums, and maybe even a bowl of bird’s nest soup if he can find any.  He also has a preference for beer more than wine, and likes to add the pulp from honey locust bean pods into it for a little added sweetness.  While wheat isn’t a staple crop in the southern parts of China, Feng does remember learning how to make dumplings, and hand-pulled noodles from his mother (who was born and raised in the Northern region of China); he still makes them if he gets his hands on proper wheat flour.
Tamara: Fufu; groundnut stew/maafe with mutton or beef; goat skewers (thoroughly seasoned, of course); really enjoys her vegetables and peppers.  She also enjoys baking breads with various herbs and garlic.  In the tavern/inn she works at in Port Tortuga (The Jade Dagger), Tamara not only helps with supplying the bread loaves that are served there, but also has a hand in making its own special brand of palm wine, and clairin.
Kyung: Mantis shrimp rice porridge/jook/粥, sweetheart cakes/lou po beng/老婆餅, and if she can get her hands on it–Tanghulu/糖葫蘆.  Tends to also really like eating edible flowers (roses, lotus, hibiscus, and any others that she knows are safe to eat).  Likes to make her own rice wines, but ironically can’t process alcohol very well which means she drinks the least.  Has the lowest tolerance of the bunch.  If given the option, she’ll confidently order milk or (non-alcoholic) fruit cider at a tavern rather than drink alcohol (this is especially well-known at the Jade Dagger whenever the Sea Dragon drops anchor at Port Tortuga).

Pumpkin Spice and Apple Cider
Stardew Valley WriteTober Day 20 (Prompt List)
“Emily, darling.” Elliott sighed as he dropped himself upon a bar stool. “Help me to drown my woes in the valley’s strongest libations.”
“Well, darling.” Emily giggled, leaning on the counter with one hip propped out, “The strongest libation we have is good old-fashioned country gossip. So what’s bothering you?”
“Emily, please, give me a drink.” Elliott combed his fingers along his scalp, pleading with his eyes. A miserable look for a usually happy man.
“Oh, fine.” She pulled a bottle from under the counter, popped the lid off on the side of the bar and slid it to him.
He drank it immediately, finishing half the bottle in one go. “That’s.” He coughed. “Very sweet. What’s the alcohol content on that?”
“We’ll, it’s the farmer’s first batch of apple cider, so…” She tossed her hands as though juggling invisible numbers. “Anywhere between zero and ten percent. That bottle seems more like a zero, I guess.”
“Emily, you sky-on-a-cloudless-day, I wanted a real drink.” He didn’t sound mad - if anything, his mood had only improved since he had arrived. “You could serve this to a child.”
“Well, I wanted some real gossip, so spill the proverbial beans and I’ll get you another bottle.” She drummed her fingers on the counter expectantly, one eyebrow raised.
“What gossip is there? As you know, my protagonist, Margrave Buchhanon, went into his father’s tomb to find his signet ring.” Emily grabbed what remained of his cider and drank as she listened. “But he had already given the signet ring to his brother! But if I take out the ring, he has no reason to go into the tomb and I lose the location for my grand reveal!”
Emily popped another bottle and slid it over the counter to him. “Mmhmm. Can’t have two signet rings. That’d be a mess.”
“Exactly.” Elliott drank from the new bottle. “Good Yoba’s Tears. You could strip paint with this!”
“Yeah, that’s the farmer’s pumpkin ale. It’s somewhere between eight and…” she smelled the bottle. “Whew. Twenty-five percent?”
“They should probably give up on the alcohol brewing.”
“Yeah, it’s not very good.” She handed him the bottle. “So where were we? Two signet rings in the father’s tomb?”

Hello! I don’t want to sound too weird, but i noticed about two Fantastic Mr Fox references in the Pootis series. One sped up song during Pootis goes to work and in the freezer in Pootis goes missing, where the Bean’s alcoholic cider can be seen.
Are you a fan of the movie? i just didn’t expect easter eggs from such a movie
Yes! I grew up watching it over and over, it was one of my first exposures to slightly more mature themes in animation. Definitely one of my all time favorites!

Manta's Cider (Apples and Pears welcome!)
Tumblr media
Today, late summer is when pears are beginning to be at their best for cider- and I think it's worth taking advantage of. And, I, am your local broke- artist that loves a good spiced drink. This is a non-alcoholic cider, that I tailor to my personal needs. The ingredients list includes a lot of spices you would traditionally add to a spiced drink, but I have some important reasonings for a couple that I include. 5 pears (with seeds and stems removed) 3 apples-I use what I have, so obviously taste will vary, this was made with granny smith, chances are, I'll post variants in the future as I experiment. (with core/stems removed) Today, late summer is when pears are beginning to be at their best for cider- and I think it's worth taking advantage of. And, I, am your local broke- artist that loves a good spiced drink. This is a non-alcoholic cider, that I tailor to my personal needs. The ingredients list includes a lot of spices you would traditionally add to a spiced drink, but I have some important reasonings for a couple that I include. Ingredients (This is a grimoire.-you're getting my commentary, but so you can sift through it easily, I've bolded the amounts for you.)
5 pears (with seeds and stems removed)
3 apples-I use what I have, so obviously taste will vary, this was made with granny smith, chances are, I'll post variants in the future as I experiment. (with core/stems removed)
Turmeric (1/4 tsp) - For joint health, and anti-inflammation, I include this in a lot of my cooking, because as an artist- my wrist starts to hurt if I work and neglect the need to upkeep my wrist's health. So for any of us working with our hands- keep this in mind.
Ginger Root, freshly grated (1 tsp)- another anti-inflammatory choice, but also for flavor. Add more if you're prone to needing your stomach soothed.
Cayenne *the smallest- SMALLEST pinch of this, I don't measure it, because like...it's a pinch. You shouldn't but barely taste it, you should at most feel the olfactory sensory input.
Cloves 1tbsp- I would recommend whole cloves, but if you're me and everything on hand is ground- fine. Ground it is! (I am not here to pretend to be an aesthetic blogger with my shit together. I'm a girlie that likes fall drinks and fun drawings, mmkay?)
Cinnamon 4 cinnamon sticks or 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
Vanilla, 2 tsp (or one vanilla bean pod, split. In this house, we discovered buying vanilla beans from a coop is an option TODAY, so we used vanilla extract here. In the future, I'll update this drink with me using vanilla bean pods instead.
2 teaspoons all spice
1/4 tbsp star anise
1/4 cup maple syrup
1tbsp honey (yet another intentional anti-inflammatory ingredient)
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 tsp of lemon juice (another one in here for our tummy ache sufferers)
10 cups water
Place your fruit, sugar, and spices into a large pot, and add water. Put the mixture on medium high heat.
Bring mixture to a boil, uncovered, for 1 hour. (Keep an eye on it and stir it occassionally during this time! You don't want it to boil over!)
(After One Hour)After a bit, you'll want to mash using the back of a wooden spoon, or a potato masher to release the juices and flavors, the fruit will be exceptionally tender then and it will be easy- be careful not to overfill your pot in the earlier phase, otherwise you will be making a hot spiced splash zone.
Next, Reduce heat to low and allow it to simmer for 2 hours
Strain mixture using a mesh sieve, or a cheese cloth. I use a sieve. I need to invest in a cheese cloth.

How about some meta about what Grima drinks? What do you think he prefers when it comes to ales and wines, how does he take his coffee, and so on? And does he like something to nosh on while he drinks (meats/cheeses/veggies with wines and ales, sweets with coffee, etc)?
Oh I do love a food history question! I’ve answered asks about alcohol preferences before and also food so for reference, links to my previous ramblings: here and here and here and here and here.
I. might like to talk about Grima & food a lot. Maybe.
Tl;dr: I don’t think Grima’s ever had coffee or “true” tea (i.e., tea from the tea plant). Granted, if it existed in Rohan Grima would have a coffee IV drip inserted into his arm because that man looks like the walking dead in terms of a clear need for sleep.
Much more likely, he would have been drinking herbal teas/infusions/tisanes (e.g., dandelion or nettle). For alcohol: he mostly drinks wine, because it’s a status symbol. But he prefers ale and mead. I don’t know how he feels about ciders—I can see him going in different directions on that.
I also ramble about what he’d be snacking on as well—sweets mostly, breads (he loves carbs, we all know that is a man who loves carbs), various cheeses and yoghurt/yoghurt adjacent things.
---
As always, I wrote you all a novel.
---
Some Preliminary Meanderings on Trade
So first, I don’t know that Rohan has coffee or tea? (When I refer to “tea” here I mean tea from the tea plant (Camellia sinensis, which is native to China) I’ll distinguish other teas by calling them herbal teas or infusions etc.)
It’s hard to parse food and trade customs in Middle Earth because Tolkien wasn’t thinking like a historian, he was thinking like a linguist and a literature professor. Therefore, things are a little wonky when you try and work them through from a regional economics perspective.
For example, we know hobbits have tea, but no one else is mentioned as having tea. When drinking happens in other places it’s almost always wine or ale or mead or some other alcoholic beverage.
We also know hobbits have tobacco, which is a North American import. Obviously Tolkien created lore around how they got tobacco, since he seemed to be trying to keep Middle Earth pretty pre-colonization of North and South America in some ways. So they wouldn’t have had access to foods like tomatoes, potatoes, certain squashes, avocado, bananas, pineapples [yes, for all my tomato & pineapple jokes Grima wouldn’t know what they are], corn, certain beans etc. Most of this food wasn’t imported from the newly colonized north, south, and central America and the Caribbean until the 16th century.
LOTR is, first and foremost, a fairy tale smashed with legends such as those found in Arthuriana (Frankish and English versions), Italian legends, and the Scandinavian and Anglo-Saxon mythos (think: Beowulf, various poetic Eddas etc.) This is why there are moments where things don’t quite work smoothly if you think about them long enough. (Hobbits are weirdly self-sufficient and technologically advanced yet we know they have regular contact with Bree who seems a hundred years behind them?)
The big, key thing is that Middle Earth, in the third age, is a fundamentally disconnected world. Even before Sauron’s return to Mordor, the human population across Gondor and Rohan and other areas has been decimated through war and diseases of the second age and early third age.
When we meet Rohan they’re a bit isolationist, aside from the strong connection to Gondor—how much of that is Grima, how much is Theoden, Thengel, Fengel, who knows. I can see Fengel starting the trend, Thengel and Theoden had strong pro-Gondor biases so would have repaired any fraught connections with that country, but I don’t see either really caring about anyone else. Rohan seems to have some strong xenophobic tendencies.
Grima, in his treason days, would have seen the benefit of an isolated, weak Rohan so would have kept it that way. If not made it worse.
Therefore, who is Rohan trading with? Gondor. Maaaaaaaaybe Laketown/Dale? But I personally see that as a stretch given the mass amount of pretty much desolate land between Laketown/Dale and Rohan. Also, it’s clear by Eomer’s reaction to Gimli that they’ve had no interactions with the Lonely Mountain. Like. Ever. If they had, Eomer would have known Gimli’s name and even if he’s the most truculent man Rohan’s ever produced, he knows how to do Prince Behaviour and would have acted accordingly.
Anyway, it's one thing to send a delegation or ambassador across such swaths of land on a specific mission, another to have merchants trekking that distance with no real support or safety network. They’d get robbed in a heartbeat.
Gondor has been on tense terms with pretty much all her neighbours, save Rohan, for a few generations at this point. Trade relations with Harad, Umber, and out east (Rhun etc.) are likely non-existent. And have been for a good while.
---
What does this mean for coffee and tea?
Going on Tolkien’s structuring of the world, I presume coffee and tea came from Harad and out east of Rhun since those spaces broadly represent middle east/parts of Africa (e.g., some aspects of Umber was loosely based on Ethiopia) and The East as seen through the lens of an Englishman steeped in a racist, orientalist culture.
Now, we know that Harad and Rhun are both aligned with the dark lord (just coincidentally, not at all for racist reasons /sarcasm/), and have had a historically fraught relationship with Gondor (lot’s of attempted colonization by Gondor, wars, bad international relations), I’m assuming there’s not been trade between them for a good, long while.
So, if there is coffee or tea in Gondor it’s been smuggled in. Therefore, if there’s coffee or tea in Rohan it’s what’s been smuggled into Gondor and somehow managed to be sold on into Rohan for a whack, whack tonne of money.
Perspective: In 14th c England a pound of ginger cost the same as a sheep—and that is a more or less accessible product procured legally.
Could Grima afford coffee or tea? I honestly don’t know. If he could, it’d be like half a year or a whole year’s income. That’s even presuming he would have had an opportunity to procure it. If he did, it’d be a rarity and would have been sold on the down-low, because of the obvious implications of what it means to have access to it.
Post-war of the ring? Gondor throws her weight around, (re)colonizes some places, forces others into subjugation, and as a result trade networks are likely reopened—either willingly or by force. So, after the war I see coffee and tea becoming far more accessible in Gondor and therefore, more accessible in Rohan.
-
I could see it being something people remember. Theoden’s father remembers his grandfather drinking coffee, that sort of thing.
Since I have Grima’s mother coming from the east as a quasi-refugee, she’d recall tea from childhood/young adulthood. It’s just they can’t get any, because of the war and the distance and lack of reliable trade network.
---
What does this mean for our favourite snake man?
So, what would Grima be drinking aside from ale and mead and wine and imported liquor?
Water, of course. There’d be wells also possible access to spring water (depending on where they are). So that’s an option.
There’s also milk. The Anglo-Saxon and early Medieval Scandinavian foodscape did funky, fun thinks with lightly fermented milk products—and aside from turning it into cheese, skyr, and iterations of kefir, they’d also soured dairy run-offs to cure their meat over the winter as an alternative to salting.
The one really relevant to the ask is herbal teas/tisanes/infusions. These would be drunk in medicinal settings as well as for ritual/spiritual reasons. Some were also likely imbibed for the pleasure of it. The ones noted below are a mix of medicinal, ritual, and herbal teas that taste nice.
Some common herbal teas Grima might have access to include, but are not limited to: dandelion, rosehip, elderberry, mugwort (do drugs, commit treason), valerian (as a sedative), mint, yellow gentian, fennel, nettle, clover, pine, rosemary, sage, poppy (another sedative, but also used for other ailments), St. John’s wort, apple and berries, local mushrooms etc.
Some options he’d have easier access to once he is in the king’s household would include ginger, cinnamon, liquorice, vanilla (so. fancy), cardamom, hibiscus and so on.
In the wine camp, he’d also have access to verry and fruit wines—elderflower cordial being one example. But there’d be apple and berry wines. In the early middle ages, based on accounts from Arabic travellers, it appears that these were highly alcoholic and people were spinning after only a few cups and these are people with a phenomenally high alcohol tolerance.
-
As mentioned in previous posts, I believe Grima likes his wine as a status symbol because bitch yeah, I made it. Look at my anachronistic pineapple decorating the table. However, outside of the wine I think he had a preference for herbed ales and meads infused with berries and other additives.
I always run his palate from sweet to tart. So he’d like Jamaica, if that version of hibiscus tea existed in Middle Earth. Sweet and sour, he’s into that flavour combination.
For herbal teas, I think he does a similar approach as he does for alcohol wherein he’ll drink ginger and cinnamon and cardamom once he’s in the king’s household as a status symbol. He can afford the fancy tisanes.
That said, as with alcohol, I think he does have a preference for the simpler teas he would have grown up with. Apple, nettle, rosehip, the various berry infusions/tisanes, and mint. He would be the person who adds a lot of honey to it, though.
Healer person: You know you should drink the dandelion tea straight with no additives, right?
Grima: I am going to put my body’s weight worth of honey into this cup and there is nothing you, or the gods, can do to stop me.
If we’re running with Grima doing some iteration of seidrcræft, there are some herbal teas that would be used to induce a trancelike state such as mugwort, henbane, mandrake, vervain and the like. Yeah, some of these are deadly, but in small doses are mild intoxicants/hallucinogens. Not to mention those Local Mushroom Teas.
One day I will write Grima doing more historic seidrcræft and not like Fantasy Seidrcræft and we will just get to see him being high as a kite while meditating and rocking back/forth to rhythmic chanting.
Does Rohan have drums? The Vikings didn’t. Tolkien doesn’t mention them having drums, only various wind instruments. Who knows.
---
Rohan has breakfast—when Aragorn et al arrive at Meduseld there’s mention of Theoden’s meat having arrived at the board, but it’s morning, so presumably it’s breakfast. Not all societies do breakfast, so that’s a notable thing.
Early medieval Anglo-Saxons and Scandinavians seemed to do three meals a day, with breakfast being light, and lunch/dinner being heavier. Not that people didn’t have light snacks here and there, they for sure did, but the three/four o’clock afternoon break for tea or coffee wasn’t a ritualized thing. I also have Rohan following that example.
All of that said, I envision Grima as a snacky person. He’s always nibbling on something at any given moment. He was that kid who could eat a cow and then some and still be hungry. Hollow leg, that sort of thing.
So, he’s sitting there in a council meeting or something and out of no where an apple materializes and people are like “where did you get that” and Grima just smiles and eats it and Eomer is like “Why do you think his robes are so big? They’re full of lies and also snacks.”
Eomer has ransacked Grima’s anachronistic office that Fandom, myself included, have given him for snacks. He knows where Grima keeps his secret stash of baked goods and other treats snaffled out of the kitchens.
Grima’s light fingers extend to procuring treats for himself as well as shiny objects.
And for sure Grima has a sweet tooth—which I think is an across-the-board fandom read on him? At least, those of us in the Grima Camp have that read, from what I’ve seen on tumblr and in the fic I’ve read.
---
Does Grima have a ritual around at least one of the smaller meals that’s not a formal event? I suspect he does. He strikes me as someone who likes his rituals and habits and so on.
For me, I like to think it’s breakfast. This man is not a morning person. He drags his desiccated carcass out of bed, splashes water on his face, contemplates if he needs to shave or not, drops himself into his clothes and shuffles out into the main hall.
He then procures for himself some herbal tea of some kind with a half-tonne of honey dumped in. It has made Eomer nauseous watching Grima add honey to his tisanes. He just chucks a whole ass honeycomb in.
Eowyn: vile. that is disgusting
Eomer: Pretty sure the spoon can stand up in it.
Grima: I need the sugar. We don’t have caffeinated beverage in our country. You don’t know how much I am suffering, Eomer “I wake up at 4am for a light 10k and some push-ups” son of Eomund and Eowyn “I have more energy than the gods ever intended one person to have” daughter of Eomund.
Anyway.
After he gets his tea made to his liking he gets a bowl of some sort of yoguhrt/skyr adjacent product with some berries and disappears around the back of Meduseld to consume it in peace and allow himself to slowly wake up without the rucous of people like Eomer being bombastic and entirely too awake for the hour (it’s like 10am).
---
For some sweet foods he could be snacking on, that I assume him to be partial to, here are a few examples (taken from a previous post):
Sweet & fried breads (e.g., gingerbread, apple loaf, proto-funnel cake etc.)
Fried, baked or stewed fruits, also candied nuts
Sweet cheeses
Custards
Tarts, pies, cakes, and cookies (a very wide range of these existed, include medieval cheesecake)
Sweet toasts i.e. toastee (most usually topped with spiced honey and available nuts)
---
Some brief notes on day-to-day food
Obviously everything Grima eats is seasonal. And I’ve talked about it before, in other posts, but I have never envisioned him as being a picky eater (until Saruman & the Lotho Incident). He was raised in a subsistence-based society, that seems to be pretty much living harvest-to-harvest therefore diets of those who are not nobility are mostly limited to what they have access to locally. Which can be quite diverse! But it depends on the time year and where they are in the country.
Obviously the average Joe living in Edoras, the capital and a trade centre, will have a wider variety of food to choose from than a farmer in the countryside. But still, everyone is constrained by season as well as income.
-
Bread would have been a huge thing, considering it’s a staple of their diet. I also see Grima just fucking loving carbs. He eats so many of them. They make him so happy.
Neil Price writes:
A whole doctoral thesis has been written on just on Viking bread, and it is in the details of daily life like this that the vividness of their world really emerges. From graves and settlement contexts all over central Sweden, but especially from the Birka burials, at least nine distinctive kinds of bread are known. There were rectangular loaves baked in a form; round loaves threaded on a thin wire; oval buns; thin, soft and foldable flatbreads made on a circular griddle pan—rather like a sort of Nordic tortilla stuffed with food; thin, circular wheels of dry, crisp flatbread with a central hole so they could be hung up for storage […]; at least two different kinds of biscuits; little balls of friend dough; and crunchy figure-of-eight shaped snacks that resemble pretzels or, more particularly, the Swedish nibbles still called kringlor. They made their bread with hulled barley and oats, sometimes wheat for the thinner forms, and very occasionally rye.
-
As for meat Grima would eat mutton, goat, beef, pork, chicken, duck, geese, various other waterfowl and game birds, deer, boar, other game meat and forms of venison (Rohan doesn’t have elk, moose or reindeer, it seems, but they’d have deer and the like). He’d also eat freshwater fish, eels, snails, molluscs, plants (e.g., watercress), and other things of that sort.
Pre-Lotho Sackville-Baggins Possible Cannibalism: He’ll eat pretty much anything put in front of him. He has his favoured foods, but there’s no real show-stoppers for him.
Post-Lotho Sackville-Baggins Possible Cannibalism: he goes basically pescatarian + chicken unless he feels he must be polite and eat the meat put in front of him. He’s better with beef or goat but he absolutely can’t do pork.
The reason for the fish + chicken is that I firmly believe Middle Earth is composed predominantly of societies that don’t see chicken as real meat. So, if Grima is like “I don’t really do meat” everyone is like “that’s fine, we have chicken.”
Grima: I’ve gone off meat. After the Saruman Incident.
Eomer: Reasonable. Entirely reasonable. But that’s ok because we have fish and there’s also lots of chicken, gamebirds and waterfowl. So we’re all good! You can avoid meat very easily.
Luckily for Grima, he is born and raised in this society and so therefore would agree with them.
-
I feel like vegetables and fruit are all pretty self-explanatory. Pretty much keep it pre-colonization of north, south, and central America and the Caribbean and you’re probably on the right track.
Grima would be eating lots of carrots, turnips, parsnips, beetroot, cabbages/lettuce/chard/other herbage, onions, garlic, certain beans, peas, other legumes etc.
For fruit the local options are likely various apples, pears, plums and other stone fruits, many different berries (gooseberry, blackberry, red currant, bilberries etc.). Theoden’s household could likely import more exotic options of oranges and other citrus, pomegranates, quinces, grapes, rhubarb, and the like.
Depending on the kind of orange that exists in middle earth, they may not have had the sweet varietal, only the bitter or sour orange.
---
Holy shit, I have written way too much on this.
Thank you so much for the ask! My apologies for how fucking long it got.

initial thoughts on the lotions, below a cut bc. thoughts. length.
little hedgehog (spiky chestnuts, autumn leaves, wild mushrooms, and warm brown sugar) leaked a bit in transit and i'm not sure i mind the lost amount enough to say anything bc whoo boy that is potent and i do not know if i want it on my skin. i don't actually know what chestnuts smell like so I'm not sure if it's the chestnuts or the mushrooms that dominate this scent. could even be the leaves! idk, i live in the desert, we don't have tree leaves here just creosote and palo verde flowers
golden corn cakes (corn cake baked to a golden perfection, topped with butter and honey) came with a warning from some buyers that it smelled like play-doh on their skin, with the note that of course, everyone's skin chemistry is different. i've only tested it a little bit but i think it skips the play-doh for me? not sure how often i would want to wear this, but its true to the perfume sample i was given. not sure i get the butter or the honey, but maybe after its sat on my skin more, it'll settle in
pumpkin queen (gentle hay pillows, pumpkin, ripe peaches dusted with clove and nutmeg, dried summer herbs and lastly, a lovely crown of amber) i don't DISlike, tho i'm not sure how often i'll reach for it. but i usually detest florals in scents -- i gambled on this one bc when i asked for advice on scents, someone said it was their all-time fave -- and i don't hate it here. and peach can be an overwhelming scent, and it fits in with the rest of it here. i'll wear this if i go on any hay rides this year, lmao
pumpkin eater (oat milk, glowing pumpkin, rich vanilla bean and the tiniest touch of nutmeg butter) doesn't actually have as much pumpkin scent on me as i was expecting. i thought this sounded like a pretty standard autumn scent, which was nice because i don't have a typical autumn scent (except for pralines and pear which i'm almost out of and which bath and bodyworks hasn't made for years now, weeps) but there's not a ton of pumpkin. either the nutmeg or the clove -- i THINK nutmeg -- is more dominant on me. not overwhelming tho. a fairly light scent. a liiiiittle warm. maybe if i wear it longer the pumpkin will emerge more? but i could prob wear this to work with no problems (given how many kids have sensory or scent sensitivities)
olde cider haus (old oak, sweet drying hayfields, crushed apple pulp and vanilla husks) wasn't initially on my list of things i was looking at, but a recommendation from someone else put it on there, and i think I'm glad for that. i get apples at first, but if i smell deeply, i can get the hay. again, i don't know how often i want to smell like hay, but that's my issue, not the lotion-makers who were very clear about hay being a dominant scent.
twice is nice (sweetest offerings of opulence! buttery sugar cookie, with shavings of creamy coconut and topped with toasted almond slivers) smells to me like fairly standard sweetness. i do get almond though, and i like almond. i expected to like this decently well, which is why i got a mini size and not a full size. i do indeed like it decently well. it has fulfilled my expectations.
red roan (fresh strawberry flecked porridge with maple syrup and adulterated with a splash of white cognac) -- i don't know what cognac smells like. i have no idea. the only alcohol i've ever had is whatever is in vanilla extract, and a single drop of some like fancy whiskey or bourbon or something. which also smelled and tasted like vanilla extract. so does this smell like cognac? i couldn't say for sure but i don't THINK so. what it does smell like is packaged strawberry oatmeal. and i got a mini version of this (rather than none at all) bc someone told me that they love the scent because it smells exactly like packaged strawberry oatmeal. they were not lying.
kitchen witch (warm zucchini bread and pumpkin cookies, ginger root, aged patchouli, a sprinkling of anise seeds, and bundles of dried herbs hanging from cedar wood rafters) was something i was looking into in a full size at first, but someone warned me that if my skin amps anise like theirs does, that's going to be all i get from it. and i don't. actually know what anise smells like. i've never had black licorice. now i've smelled this and i'm scared to put this on my skin. maybe it'll transform and i'll get the rest of the scents but. maybe not. maybe it's just what i presume is anise. ...i sort of wanted to try absinthe with a sugar dripper because that seems neat, but absinthe is also anise-based isn't it. so i would really really hate it, wouldn't i.
ghost puffs (orbs of buttery popcorn and marshmallow goo, presented on a wooden stick) now that’s what i'm fuckin talking about babyyyyy!!! this is the one i was most excited to try, and.... to be honest, when i first put it on, all i got was an artificial marshmallow scent. and now, an hour after i put it on, i get... a realistic marshmallow goo scent. i do not get the popcorn or the butter. but my sister said she could smell it when I put it on! said it reminds her of a powder you put on some types of kettle corn. so that might just be my broken nose's inability to smell some things rearing its ugly head again.
i’m going to go slather myself in ghost puffs and see if i can make the popcorn come out that way.
