Do you like polearms? I know I do. Halberds, bec-de-corbin, Bohemian Earspoon, voulges, all types of bills, guisarmes... I remember reading through the tables in the 1E AD&D PHB and being amazed that they all had different stats. Whatever.

The sword of the day is the bec de corbin.
Tumblr media
This is a polearm, and something of a variation on the poleaxe I’ve discussed previously. The difference is that this weapon replaces the axe head with a long curved spike, which was the primary blade used. The name means “crow’s beak” in somewhat archaic French, and it’s easy to see why. Polearms like this and the poleaxe are considered battlefield weapons, rather than for self-defense mostly because they’re inconvenient to carry around safely. There isn’t a particularly safe way to handle the head of this particular weapon, which is kind of the point.

the labrys is a lesbian symbol, and a feminist symbol.
but i am a non binary lesbian and i think my personal strength and self-sufficiency is better symbolized by the bec de corbin.

I can always tell the frans shippers are mostly female since they always makes Frisk into being female since I literally only seen one or few shippers that have Frisk as male or kept Frisk as nb
actually i would argue that a significant count are male. heterosexual male gaze and all that bullhonkey y'know? at least, the selfshippers are likely mostly het females, thirsting for a skeleton that literally does not ever appear in canonical undertale. papyrus is the closest it gets to their weird sans thirst. like guys c'mon he's a stinky dirty lazy unhealthy trashbag ( affectionate trust me ) at least thirst for THAT instead of whatever weird rizz-filled bonehunk you people seem to keep seeing in your dreams.
but the non-selfshippers have got to be mostly het males. or at least a large portion of 'em. i mean have you Seen just how sexualized frans shit gets? how sexualized FRISK gets within 90% of frans ships? i cannot look at that and say in good faith that those are not drawn or written or, hell forbid, Both, by horny heterosexual males wanting to fuck frisk. which is even weirder, and gets weirder yet weirder when you're looking at works where frisk STARTS OUT as a kid and yes they exist. i won't name any names mostly cuz i don't remember specifics but god they exist. anyway rant over i hate frans bye

Personally my bedside weapon of choice would be a daneaxe or a shortish poleaxe
what about a bec de corbin
not a lotta issues that can't be solved with a big fucking spike on a stick, no?

Throughout both Zero Dawn and Forbidden West, Erend uses a large, two handed Warhammer. Because it’s all solid color (presumably due to the dust in the environment) in the screenshots I got, I also cropped an official screenshot so it’s specifically showing the head, for reference purposes. In the official screenshot, you can see it doesn’t have many standout features, it’s just practical, which is perfect for this kind of thing anyways
Due to the shape of the head, as well as the fact it’s two-handed, we can assume that it is based off of the Bec de Corbin, or the “Crow’s Beak”, a hammer popular in medieval Europe. It’s main use was for destroying armor, specifically by tearing at it after damaging it with the blunt end.

Helen a Julian
Hola Julian,
Helen

What's your favourite medieval weapon?
Thank you for the ask!
It's probably the most cliché answer you could expect but... swords? Especially the 'bastard sword' or also known as 'hand-and-a-half' sword.
I also love the Katzbalger but that does not count since it's early modern age and not medieval.
If swords aren't an option, I would go for the bec de corbin (or ravens beak)
If I had to pick a weapon that is not european (because let's face it, I'm biased as fuck) I would pick a Yari, that's a japanese lance type of weapon. (At first I wanted to pick a Guan Dao but uh.. that's from the antique and not medieval so disqualified)

i'll start you off by saying the bec de corbin was picked up later in his demonhood. someone showed it to him and he thought it was cool as hell, and so a custom one was gifted to him that runs red in its veins with a hunger.
Nice. Maybe it was Aeron. Middle Eastern culture, blood, history, war. Artisan. Fits their vibe.
The blood thing actually gives me an idea which fits well with something I already had planned.
him being some sort of mercenary turned cult leader is actually really, really fun, and if i wasn't the person i am i would've stolen that. that's fucking brilliant.
It does work. Perhaps Dorian found himself short of cash or needing to escape an unsavory reputation, consequences, or just his miserable life. And he enlisted as soon as possible after his mother passed (I think the minimum was age 17). Perhaps as he grew in confidence he used his deployments as a way to spread the gospel and accumulate followers. Even just camp followers who began to encourage him until he believed his own hype.
There's actually some more interesting things when digging about Gilles de Rais, who comes to mind - being a knight and alleged to have been involved in cults. (Huge TW for child death and SA if googling him. Not a good dude.)
There are mentions of alleged witch-cults weirdly similar to Dorian's that were being stamped out as heretics. Dianic with an element of fertility, and a sun god that was becoming popular among Roman soldiers. Not related to each other but the Church was not happy and went after a number of the smaller religions including a sub-sect of Christianity. (I already knew about that one.)
in the reality of 10:16, the tattoo on his arm is of the player's name.
Ahhhh... of course. Because the player shares his mother's name. Why didn't I see that coming.
Rebecca is Hebrew so not a great fit. But perhaps she likes to go by her middle name, Agnes, so that's what bird Dorian was always hearing her called. I chose it because in Greek it means pure/chaste/holy and the Roman 'Agnus' means lamb.
Which is an animal motif - she has a trusting naive nature, is unknowingly a prey animal to those who shelter her, and there's the religious overtones. A sheep being protected by a shepherd and a sacrificial lamb to the slaughter. It also lets Dorian call her Lamb.
It doesn't really fit with Germanic roots... I think the closest there would be Inessa or Nessa.
But Rome did have a Saint Agnes. (Massive TWs there too.)
Ironically while she did get martyred eventually (for refusing a man and her Christianity being judged a cult), attempts to defile her purity failed and the wood at her stake refused to burn.
in ways i like to keep dorian's human life vague because that no longer matters to him. at this point, he's nearly forgotten his own name. people can fantasize about what they think, about what they want. what matters is that dorian sits in his cathedral, sorting through books, wishing he could leave. wishing he could take the muzzle off.
and perhaps he will, one day, but he has not been killed, and i don't think anyone has told him that this was an option.
it's not to say i don't love all of this, because i do! but it is a detail that i will give to the players and the readers to ponder about. what was he before? scary, of course. led the lambs astray, of course. but anything else? does there even need to be anything else?

Yo guy! Now that I've got approval from Rainier (our DM) that you can join, I thought I'd tell you about my character! :)
So his name is Hr. Rolli Spangenheimer, and much like Blackthorn, he's a red-scaled kobold.
Tumblr media
(his outfit is centred around a medieval Churburg breastplate and a slightly-stylised open-faced barbute. It has hinges on the bag to allow the lower half to close around the horns on the back of his head! The weapon he's carrying is a Bec de Corbin, a late-medieval polearm with a hammer on one side and and armour-piercing spike on the other. If you couldn't tell I'm a bit of a medieval nerd)
Originally from a fairly secluded kobold-den, Spangenheimer was originally apprentice to their blacksmith, who as well as teaching him how to work a forge also taught him the art of combat. However, when Rolli was little older than 16 or 17 (in Kobold year) his mentor was murdered... And he was framed as the murderer. Facing a choice between exile or execution, Spangenheimer took whatever he could carry: his tools, his armour and his Bec de Corbin, and left the den he had lived in his entire life. Luckily his martial skill and equipment was sufficient to land him in work with a mercenary company, the Black Eagles, for the following few years of his life. It was a hard life, fighting gods-know-what from day to day but it paid... Enough. Enough to see Rolli by, but not much else. And it turned out enough wasn't for Herr Spangenheimer as at around the (kobold) age of 24, he left the Black Eagles to pursue the only venture that really paid what he needed to satisfy his ambition of starting his own mercenary company... Adventuring. As of the campaign he's been freelancing for a bit, but hasn't quite scored the big chance for gold he's been looking for. But who knows what will be around the corner...
I'll send you a link to the discord server we're using to run the campaign in DMs.
Wow, that's a lot, I guess that's something us DnD players have in common. And, again, I meant to answer this yesterday, but I didn't have the time. Today was kinda busy.
First, holy wow, Hr. Spangenheimer is really cool. Not even just him, but his motif as well. The whole medieval thing really works for a kobold, and I think it works well against Thorn's more tribal appearance and mannerisms. On top of that, his weapon kind of reminds me of a scythe, one of my favorite weapons.
Also, he really went through a lot. I seriously feel bad for him. The murder of someone close to him, followed by the accusation that he's the one that did it. The only thing I can say is, "That's rough, dude." I genuinely feel for Hr. Spangenheimer, though. I hope his life gets better from there.
Oh, and I already accepted the invite to the server, thanks for that! And I checked it out a little, thank you for double-confirming that I can join the campaign. As of now, Thorn is nearly complete. I listed everything I'd need for a first-time session, but I'm still experimenting with the Draconic Bloodline subclass(?), it's really fun.
So... yeah. I'm finished with Thorn as is, and I guess I can join the campaign right now.

The pollaxe, the lucerne hammer and the bec de corbin - how do they fit together?
If you're someone interested in late medieval western european weaponry you have no doubt come across the pollaxe, and also the weapons people refer to as lucerne hammers and bec de corbins. But you also probably have seen these terms used on the same weapon, so how do they actually fit together and how were they used in history?
To begin with, the pollaxe is a weapon that, despite its name, does not need to have an axe blade. Since variants with hammers and beaks are just considered that - variants. It's still fundamentally the same weapon and can use almost all of the same techniques in the fencing manuals there is rarely a differentiation made in historical documents between ones with axe blades and ones with hammer heads. Most axe fencing treatises from the 15th century showcase hammer headed ones, for example this treatise from Paulus Kal:
Tumblr media
This is also present in many other treatises such as Talhoffer, Fiore, Le Jeu de la Hache, etc etc. In fact it seems more common for axes used in dueling to have hammer heads and beaks rather than blades, although there's still examples of the latter.
Before I move on to the bec and the lucerne hammer, I will talk shortly about the term pollaxe. While sounding similar to poleaxe it is thought that the origin of the word comes from the word 'poll', meaning head, rather than the word pole. It is also a strictly english term and often the weapon is also simply just called axe, or battle-axe. In other languages some regional variations can be found, such as mordaxt from german, but in most cases it is just referred to as axe (axt, hache, azza, etc etc).
Anyway so going back to the bec de corbin. Bec de corbin is actually a rare form of this term, and the more common one in documents is Bec de Faucon. These refer to the beak of the pollaxe but at some point did come to denote axes which specifically have hammer heads and beaks. However it should be clear that in the documents this is simply thought of as a further categorisation of the pollaxe, it is not a separate weapon, and in many cases even in french sources these weapons are simply called 'axe'. Any axe with a hammer and a beak can be called a bec de faucon (or corbin), if you're speaking french. I have not found an equivalent term in other languages.
Lucerne Hammer is the least historical of the three terms. It was popularised by Ewart Oakeshott in the modern period, however there might be earlier references using this name that I am personally unaware of. This term is used to denote a very specific type of head construction found on swiss pollaxes of the late 15th and 16th centuries (and not earlier). Since a lot of these axes, or hammers, were found in the Lucerne armoury due to it being a popular militia weapon the construction came to be known as Lucerne Hammer. What actually is this construction then?
While non-swiss pollaxes will have the top spike and the langets (shaft reinforcements) go on top of the axe head and be fastened on the outside of it, these swiss axes instead have the head be outside of the langets. Why this was done is unknown but it is a feature that seems to be localised entirely (or almost entirely) to switzerland, and shows up in the very late 15th century where it remains in use throughout the 16th. This was potentially easier to mass-produce, although whether this actually is the reason remains unknown. It should also be noted this is not limited to hammers and is also found on axe-bladed pollaxes. For clarity, I will post the two relevant constructions below outlined. This one is the so-called Lucerne Hammer with the swiss construction, note how the head is above the underlying reinforcement (outlined in red).
Tumblr media
This example below is Italian, and one can see how the head is under the shaft reinforcements (outlined in red).
Tumblr media
So to recap: Both of the examples above are axes (pollaxe if you're speaking english). Both of the examples can be called 'bec de faucon/corbin' (if you are speaking french) Only the top one can be called a 'Lucerne Hammer', and this is a construction that does not show up before the late 15th century. The term is also of questionable historicity. Hopefully, that cleared things up!
