15 questions 15 tags
Thanks for the tag @volchitsa-of-winterfell ! I love tag games and the random little peeks into tumblr folks' life 😊
Nickname: briefly, a word that translates to 'little sunshine'. I have another, more used and very distinctive nickname that i'd rather not share because i want to continue being weird on this blog in anonymity lol
Height: 170cm, which is about 5.6, or so google tells me
Last thing i googled: "170 cm in feet" xD xD
Song currently stuck in head: "Somebody that i used to know" /o\ i'd like it to be gone now, please, let this be the exorcism i need
Number of followers: at least 10 xD xD (the fact that i have any followers at all is a source of constant wonder and joy)
Dream job: librarian.
Wearing: soft baggy jeans and a white t-shirt, both 2-3 sizes bigger than necessary, for maximum comfy feeling at home
A book/movie that summarises you: drawing blanks here, so im gonna go with a character - Jacopo Belbo from 'Foucault's Pendulum' by Umberto Eco (the book is not everyone's cup of tea, but seriously, if i was a fictional guy in 70s Italy i'd be him, well, minus some of the brainpower, maybe)
Favourite songs: i'll go with what Spotify Wrapped says is my song of the year - Soran Bushi by Maia Barouh (i am still obsessed with Kana Muramoto and Daisuke Takahashi skating to this song, as should be everyone, frankly)
Aestethic: i strive for 'understated but cool', although what i end up with is probably more 'somewhat boring with a funky detail'. June bug coloured sneakers are my current favourite item of clothing. Wrist watches are a thing, especially if they have a steampunk vibe, though i wear them mostly as an accessory and check the time on my phone lol
Favourite authors: Neil Gaiman (whose Sandman gave me this blog's title and an obsession lol), Lois McMaster Bujold (whose Vor series gave me my all-time favourite female character - Cordelia, mother of the main guy and protagonist of a couple of books), Terry Pratchett, Ursula LeGuin, William Gibson, Ray Bradbury
Random fact: i once got lost in the desert in a wonky little car without cell coverage or water (well, the desert's outskirts, to be precise, though that didn't make it much less sttessfull). A fun story to tell now, not that great while it was happening 😂
Favourite holiday: anything that allows me enough time to go to the sea. Any sea
Pets: no pets 😔 my schedule is too erratic to care for a pet, although that seems to be changing so who knows :))
Languages: i work in translation and have lived in several different countries, so i speak English and French (roughly at the same level though i write way slower/worse in French); i have decent Italian and Spanish, less decent but still workable Russian, a little Portuguese and German and a rudimentary idea of another couple of languages. Also, my mother tongue gives me an insight into that whole language group, which is very practical, if somewhat hilarious when i try to communicate xD Would love to learn Japanese next but... brain mush... effort... time... ugh
I'm a bit shy to tag people but i'd love to see what @friedricenietzsche has to say, and @alwayshappyhoursomewhere for the last 3 questions :)) and honestly everyone who sees this post and feels like it, because i'd love to hear more about you 💜

Umberto Eco’s Foucault’s Pendulum and Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed stare knowingly at each other from a dark corner.
Drink of choice: Straight whiskey, but they did not pour their own cups. They sniff at it and pretend to sip during their conversation.
Tumblr media
They have a lot to say, but keep it to themselves. Assassin’s Creed (2007-2018) has all but cast aside it’s science fiction plot with the release of AC:Odyssey (2018), and with it a fascinating aspect of the series’s narrative. The games featured around the main character Desmond Miles treats conspiracy and world formation with a careful consideration that Foucault's Pendulum (1988) would appreciate. The conspiracy element in both works suggests a connection between the author/developer and reader/player. Both texts expect the reader/player to fully engage with secrets, or in FP’s case, engage with the notion of a secret. These secrets are treated as potential bombs that could render the world’s scaffolding null and void. As Ezio says in ACII (2009), “Nothing is true, everything is permitted,” and in order for nothing to be true, it follows that truth is a created abstraction. FP similarly comments, “I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma, a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth” (FP). Bolstered by AC’s Templars and FP’s Tres (both secret organizations withholding truth), Desmond and Casaubon are the unwitting normal citizens drawn deep into conspiracy. It becomes especially apparent through AC that this quality reifies the notion that reality, and all governing structures inside of it, is a construction waiting to be broken.
Tumblr media
Both texts could be considered postmodern, as both narratives are incredibly abstract in many ways. One of these ways is the treatment of time and access to past events. AC’s dual narrative in ancient day and modern day create a timeless variable that further dissociates players from what could be considered the “present” in the game. Given the Assassins are concerned with the idea of constructed reality (for what purpose and by whom is it constructed?) this narrative tool both raises fan interest and compliments one of the game’s themes. The Animus, the Templar’s technology, is “a projector that renders genetic memories in three dimensions” (AC). This device utilizes genes left from ancestors and recreates a virtual reality of their memories. In this way, AC deconstructs the modern world as the result of a vastly misunderstood past by upholding the new genetic memory as truth. FP too backs the deconstruction of time,“The belief that time is a linear, directed sequence running from A to B is a modern illusion. In fact, it can also go from B to A, the effect producing the cause” (FP).
Tumblr media
What if the cause does not produce the effect, but “the effect produces the cause”, as FP suggests? In ACII (2009), Minerva is introduced in the Vatican vault to explain a great disaster that will befall earth, but Desmond’s  ancestor, Ezio, speaks, “none of what you are saying makes sense.” She responds, “Our words are not meant for you.” Ezio spins around in confusion, as he is the only person in the vault, “There’s no one else here!” Minerva explains “I do not wish to speak with you but through you. You are the prophet. You’ve played your part. You anchor him, but please be silent! That we may commune.” Minerva depicts Ezio as a tool to send a message to Desmond in the present day, but on another level Desmond is too a tool to send a message to players. In the above cut scene the player watches Minerva and Ezio talk until Minerva turns her gaze directly to the camera. Though in the scope of narrative this is supposed to represent a plea to Desmond, outside of the narrative it breaks a fourth wall. This interactive contact between developer and player illuminates the game’s characters as tools of meaning, and that the true interaction is between the story creator and the story consumer. AC takes world formation a step further than FP by deconstructing the video game world and the player’s world.
Tumblr media
While FP does not have a dual narrative, the sheer amount of references to ancient texts and people accomplishes the same goal as AC. It deconstructs time, space, truth, and common belief. Each chapter begins with an excerpt from either obscure documents or classic literature, dropping the reader back in time before continuing with the present plot. In addition, the entire book is concerned with searching through the relics of the past to understand something unknown in the present. The gatekeepers of this knowledge are often Tres, just as AC’s search for The Apple always returns to the Templars. The deconstruction of reality and time further compliment each work’s intention and comments on world perception and formation.
Tumblr media
These conspiracy narratives do what they do best - attempt to break down collective perception and truth. The secrecy of the antagonists draw readers and players in too, our curiosity driving us to continue engaging with the text - much in the same way Belbo engages with ancient documents and lore in FP. If a collective can have a suspension of disbelief, you reader/player, who has chased ideas far outside of it with these narratives, must be searching for a secret.

Having seen us emerge from our small casita and wave, he had no choice but to cut the motor to his tractor and hop off. His sinewy arms were covered in a fine hay dust and he wore an old pink tee-shirt emblazoned with the words ‘Texas Longhorns’ underneath the drawing of a cow. Motioning to the top of the ridge, he explained in rapid-fire Italian that he was a sheep farmer across the valley. He went on to say he had a long-standing arrangement with the previous owners; their understanding that he could mow the fields and gather the hay for his livestock. While realizing the land had changed hands, he just assumed the deal stood. He was, for lack of a better word, sheepish in his explanation. Without missing a beat, we asked him to mow two additional fields, their weeds and wildflowers taller than me. He nodded and grinned, assuring us we’d be receiving wheels of his cheese in the very near future. - #italy #piedmont #bartering #rurallife #neighbors (at San Benedetto Belbo, Italy)
