i'm juggling fandom along with working and other adult responsibilities in addition to writing, i love reading and as long as i'm not in a slump, i'll devour a book relatively quickly. i'm a granny and i love knitting as well. and yes i constantly have ideas for wips and only maybe 1% ever actually gets written.
fandom interests: currently obsessed with aot (for the second time) and i pretty much write eremika and jeanpiku but i'm not picky at all! i'm open to writing any ship so long as i have an active interest in it. in the past i've been in the naruto, bleach, fairy tail, death note, vld, tdp, castlevania, yoi, hq!!, and banana fish fandoms. my current hyperfixations are aot and hotd.

Tell Me How You Really Feel by Aminah Mae Safi - Book Review
Tumblr media
9.5/10 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🌟
TWs: car accident, cursing, sexism, panic attacks, abandonment
(TWs are ranked in order of severity, please take them seriously!)
Summary
“The first time Sana Khan asked out a girl-Rachel Recht--it went so badly that she never did it again. Rachel is a film buff and aspiring director, and she's seen Carrie enough times to learn you can never trust cheerleaders (and beautiful people). Rachel was furious that Sana tried to prank her by asking her on a date.
But when it comes time for Rachel to cast her senior project, she realizes that there's no more perfect lead than Sana--the girl she's sneered at in the halls for the past three years. And poor Sana--she says yes. She never did really get over that first crush, even if Rachel can barely stand to be in the same room as her.
Told in alternative viewpoints and set against the backdrop of Los Angeles in the springtime, when the rainy season rolls in and the Santa Ana's can still blow--these two girls are about to learn that in the city of dreams, anything is possible--even love.”
TL;DR Tell Me How You Really Feel is an ode to romantic comedies, following two girls on opposite sides of the social scale as they work together to make a movie and try very hard not to fall in love. Cheerleader meets film nerd, enemies to lovers.
Tumblr media
I found this book through one of those tik tok videos where someone is flinging books off a pile at light speed under a caption “queer SA (South Asian) books you need to read”. I absolutely love those videos, even though they test my screenshotting abilities.
It’s been a while since I updated this blog(?) and that’s because I’ve been very busy finishing out the school year and reading every gay book I could get my hands on over the course of pride month. I will be posting reviews of those books soon, but in a quick review so far this month I’ve read:
• Last Night At The Telegraph Club
• Unearthed (graphic novel)
• Café con Leche
• Eighty Days (graphic novel)
• Tell Me How You Really Feel (this review!)
• The Raven Cycle (yes all 4 books, no I will not be reviewing)
Honorable mention: All 50 episodes of The Untamed (SUCH a good cdrama) & Season 1 of Stranger Things
I’ve realized over the course of this book binge that I prefer my enemies to lovers to have good reasoning - or at least understandable reasoning on both sides. My favorite part is seeing how that can morph into love without either realizing until it’s too late *cue evil laughter*
Tell Me How You Really Feel does that perfectly. I especially loved how it was written - the characters were flawed, raw and dynamic, and the writing style reminded me of books by Nicola Yoon (The Sun is Also a Star, Everything Everything). The romance isn’t necessarily the focus - it’s shoved in on the shelf along with everything else happening in the characters lives. The story simply starts (ish) and ends with the life of their romance within that.
And because this is a gay high school romance between a cheerleader and a film nerd, of course there are a million movie references, from Pakeezah to Pretty in Pink.
Tumblr media
Meena Kumari 😩🧎🏽‍♀️
But real quick, let’s talk
Representation
Sana Khan and Rachel Recht, the main characters, are both into women. Although their sexualities aren’t explicitly stated, this part is made very clear.
Sana is desi, and Persian and Indian if I remember correctly? Her family is very mixed and has a lot of languages (Bengali, Urdu, Arabic, Persian, French, etc). She is second-gen American, while I’m pretty sure Rachel is first-gen (at least on her mom’s side).
Rachel is Mexican and Jewish, and her family consists of just her and her father (and their larger community) in comparison to Sana’s many cousins and aunties/uncles. Her full name is Rachel Consuela Recht, which I’m guessing is to show her mixed cultures.
For Sana I can somewhat call this an own voices review on representation, but please keep in mind the Indian (and larger desi community) is not a monolith & we won’t all agree on my own interpretation.
What I really liked about representation for Sana and her family was it is very women-centric. Her grandmother, Mamani, is very clearly the matriarch, and Farrah, Sana’s mom, is a single mother working in the film industry. In western literature desi culture is typically portrayed as oppressing women, especially in Muslim households, but this stereotype is flipped on its head by Sana’s family. It also showed how within a religion certain family members can be more religious than others - Sana & her Mamani are more religious (praying regularly, not drinking, etc) while Farrah is less so - and there’s no negative connotation on it.
Rachel and Sana both engage in religious holidays over the course of the book (Norwuz for Sana, Passover for Rachel). Since I’m neither Muslim or Jewish, it was interesting to learn more about the holidays and how they’re celebrated.
Single parenting rep (Rachel raised by her dad, Sana raised by her mom) was also really good. As someone being raised by a single mom & at one point a single dad, the struggle is portrayed really well.
Finally, I love that Sana fills the character of pretty perfect Gilmore-girls-esque cheerleader. Brown women don’t often get to be portrayed as lovely and soft and also raw and real at the same time. It really hit my heart 💗 Sana’s features are seen as beautiful by everyone around her - like a commonly accepted fact. She’s the official “pretty girl” of her school - and so much more beneath that.
Tumblr media
What I Loved:
Aside from the good rep, the way the book is written is just ✨ poetic ✨
“Sana smiled, and suddenly Rachel understood every stupid love poem comparing the beloved to the sun.”
HOW DO I RECOVER??
Mainly though, I think this book came at the right time for me. Sana’s situation was really relatable to me, and her storyline actually helped me figure out some stuff in my own life (no spoilers!)
If you’re worried about the future, or planning to become a doctor or lawyer - read this book.
I’m also a sucker for big movie style gestures so this was a plus. I could see how the book was going to end generally way before the end, and that made it more of a comfort read than an “intellectual” read. I loved the character development as well - some serious words of wisdom in there!
As someone who wants to go to college in LA, and can’t afford to visit, this is as close as it gets to seeing what life there is like for me 😂 I’m curious to see what those Santa Anas feel like!
Tumblr media
Why I couldn’t give it a 10:
I wasn’t the biggest fan of Rachel’s character to be honest. She hated Sana so much at the beginning, for something that had happened in their freshman year (the story takes place in their senior year). I could understand animosity, but it was another level. It made me think Rachel had anger issues - she seemed really self pitying and insecure. Which would have been fine - I’m all for character development - if she had realized that. But Rachel never seemed to come to terms with the fact that she had treated Sana like sh*t at every turn for nearly 4 years. It’s not that they don’t fall in love (this is a love story) but she doesn’t really feel remorseful for how she acted.
On set, when she’s directing the crew, the way she treated them reminded me of Michael Scott from the Office 😭
Tumblr media
I also wish there had been more focus on the other characters in the book. Farrah, Sana’s mom, and Daniel, Rachel’s dad, kind of felt like glorified plot devices, especially near the end. Same goes for Diesel, Sana’s so-called best friend. We don’t actually see a lot of their relationship aside from Diesel giving her rides from school and then playing video games with her. In the end, his purpose was also a little plot device-y, a little serving the main ship, etc.
I liked that Diesel subverted the dumb insensitive jock trope, but I would have loved to see more of him and Maddie (another cheerleader)!
Tumblr media
^unrelated but I love this scene (very scary cheerleader)
Overall, the book was a satisfying beach read (as in, I literally read it on the beach). Feel good, decent character development (on Sana’s part), and it gave me something I’d really been searching for: an enemies to lovers story between queer women of color in high school. Like babe- this is my niche!!
Tumblr media
And yes, I cried at the end.
I sincerely recommend to fans of:
The Sun is Also A Star
Everything Everything
Movies (if you’re a movie nerd, you’re going to get wayy more of these references than I did)
But I’m A Cheerleader (movie)
Sense 8 (show) especially if you like the wlw couple
Most of my reviews for this month are going to be LGBTQ+ stories between PoC 🏳️‍🌈 so stay tuned!

Men Like Gods (1923) by H. G. Wells – Men and women in an alternative universe without world government in a perfected state of anarchy (“Our education is our government,” a Utopian named Lion says;[31]) sectarian religion, like politics, has died away, and advanced scientific research flourishes; life is governed by “the Five Principles of Liberty,” which are privacy, freedom of movement, unlimited knowledge, truthfulness, and freedom of discussion and criticism.[citation needed]

In some of the stories action takes place mainly in non-Culture environments, and the leading characters are often on the fringes of (or non-members of) the Culture.

A biography By Manohar Kapoor
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anil Sharma is an Indian movie director and producer. Amitabh has been an active participant in Indian politics for over a decade, and is a member of the Communist party. Amitabh has made some films that have won him many accolades in India and abroad. Amitabh has adapted his love for photography and film very well into his work as an director. His first two films, Kaal Bhaiya (2021) and Mankatha (2021), did not receive favourable reviews from the Hindi film fraternity, but he has since gained appreciation for his work.
Anil's first two Bollywood hits, Kaal Bhaiya and Mankatha, did not do too well in the foreign market. However, his next two movies, Yoga (Yash Rajneeti), starring Ranbir Kapoor and Madhumati (Till Death Do Us Part), were much more successful and did well at the box office. Most critics agree that Apoor does an excellent job of retelling traditional Indian stories in a modern light, which is both fun and engaging. Some of the stories are even old enough to be relevant even today, like the one about the ghost writer who is believed to have written the Ramayana. A film like Yoga makes Aptana an even more interesting character, and turns out to be a definite must-see film.
Aptana tells the story of three young men from the outskirts of Mumbai - Dayanita, Vimala and Karanj (Koena Sheikh), who fall in love and are forced to leave their home to go to Delhi to continue their studies and pursue their careers. Aptana depicts their various struggles and adventures in the city, and those struggles also give us an insight into the psyche of the Indian audience. We come to know about the intricacies of romantic love, and the various emotions that a normal man and woman go through during their daily life. We also learn about the perils that face day to day life, as well as the resilience of the human spirit. Aptana would be incomplete without a good portrayal of the Hindi language, and it was this very feature that added to the popularity of Apoorji's first ever feature.
Karanj has a very different kind of appeal than Dayanita and Vimala. He is a more traditional character, almost tribal in nature. Karanj could also be seen as a visionary of sorts, given his association with Mulk Raj Anand, the great Bengali writer. Raj had a very large role in Apoorji, playing a major character called Kancha, who was the main catalyst in bringing Apoorji to the big screen. Karanj did not help his case by being dull, or by being a bit stereotypical. Instead, he made an impression with a series of films that won him many awards, including the best actor award at the 1996 Academy Awards, and an additional Oscar for his contribution to the film.
When Karanj's career took off in the eighties, he did not entirely leave the Indian Film industry. Instead, he went on to direct some English films and also produced a number of comedies. This is one of the elements of Apoorji that makes it stand apart from most bollywood films - an element that Apoorji simply cannot get enough of. The biography of Apoorji that covers this period is entitled Apoorji and the Making of Today's Film Director.
Karanj has also co-written two movies with Yash Chopra - The Great Bazaar and Meet The Parents. He also has a number of accolades to his credit, including an Academy Award and an honorary doctorate from Harvard University. It is these films that would give you insight into what the template message for an Apoorji bio should focus on.
We learn very little about Apoorji, other than he is from rural India, has English as his mother tongue, and that he is a great baker. However, we do come to realise just how much Apoorji's intellect and creativity stands out from other actors of his time. For example, when Apoorji co-writes The Great Bazaar with Yash Chopra, the legendary director gives the script a real depth and sense of humanity, even though at times the story seems to go in circles (which is to say, the plot thickens). Apoorji brings the character of Bala to life in such a way that Apoorji's presence is felt throughout the film - and is therefore one of the strongest features of the Apoorji biographies.
Finally, Anil's son Swapna is brilliantly depicted in the book. The biographer finally reveals how their working relationship with Chandan Mulay became so strong. Anil had initially rejected Swapna and his aspirations for stardom, but when Chandan was injured badly in an accident on the set of an Apoorji movie, Anil had no choice but to let the then 20 year old actor try out for the lead role. Although it was a low moment in Anil's career, it helped him to gain respect as an actor and he soon came to regard Chandan as his friend. Anil's love of the cinema is well demonstrated in this book and anyone who has seen Anil shoot some of his greatest films would be doing themselves a great service to read about this remarkable man and woman of Indian theatre.

FVD- Week 1
Tumblr media
So, the journey at the National Institute of Design has begun. The first two weeks of Introduction to Design was surreal. It was filled with designers from various disciplines each of them with their own story.
Then the Fundamentals of Visual Design module started which I was honestly scared about after I came across some stories on Instagram of a few M.Des students from the Bangalore campus but once the started, it was amazingly entertaining and inspiring. Between Suman Da’s and Shekhar’s live demos, stories and jokes from Saurabh and Kuntal and some soul soothing bengali folk music from Basuki Da, I was glued to my screen the entire time.
I either had an awestruck fanboy face or a grinning face like an idiot which somehow made my parents think that I might be watching some standup comedy video during my class timings. Thank you for making the sessions engaging.
Now, I could not just sit there and do nothing and so I jumped on the bandwagon.
Tumblr media
Ok this might be confusing. It is just warmup. Straight lines, curved lines, squiggles, triangles, squares, rectangles and what not. The image above is just one of many more and I promise you they look much cleaner than this one. This one might just be a result of my laziness. Now, I have started using discarded newspapers just to not waste paper. Smart, huh!
Moved on to some observational simple pencil sketches on paper of my surroundings.
Tumblr media
With a few more details and some new challenges
Tumblr media
Then, I moved on to some nature sketching. It was very relaxing I must say!
Tumblr media
The final sketch of the potted plant. The image has come out bad somehow!
Well, now with a few hand drawn sketches, I wanted to explore some other mediums. Like:
Tumblr media
Brush and fountain pen ink on paper. My trusty old lamp.
Tumblr media
A tree with ball pen. It’s just squiggles I guess. Super fun to do!!
And then after sometime, I got bored and wanted to try some human anatomy as well. I must warn you, they are very very rough.
Tumblr media
The old guy was someone in my neighbourhood doing yoga in the morning.
Tumblr media
Ok, I need to stop stalking people in the morning when they are exercising.
Tumblr media
Some random concept character. This is WIP by the way.
Tumblr media
Still working on this sketch. I will be rendering this with coffee probably.
One more bonus. This is a character from a Satyajit Ray book known as the adventures of Prof. Shonku. This inspiration came to me when I saw Shekhar talking on the screen. Shekhar, this is for you.
Tumblr media
Shekhar Bhattacharya as the legendary Prof. Shonku

At whatever point we've met Ritabhari Chakraborty in the recent years, 'Khelechi Ajgubi' has surfaced in discussions, with the pretty and multitalented entertainer enthusiastically anticipating the Parambrata Chattopadhyay-coordinated film. Depending on a mixed up character, the film is currently set to debut on Zee5 as Tiki Taka on September 11. A talk with Ritabhari who had twofold the motivation to celebrate — the film's delivery and the way that she got to glitz up for this meeting.
The film was at first called Khelechi Ajgubi and is presently delivering as Tiki Taka… Now the film is delivering in both Hindi and Bangla and they needed to go with a title which fits in well with a bilingual film and something that football fans, skillet India, would have the option to identify with. We named it during the lockdown. The film should have a dramatic delivery and now as a result of the current circumstance, we have needed to go for a computerized discharge. In spite of the fact that there is somewhat of a failure since you are passing up a dramatic delivery, the great part is it will contact a greater crowd.
When did you shoot it? 2018. It is Param's executive endeavor and he got truly occupied. The film additionally has a great deal of embellishments and he puts stock in flawlessness. I was continually following up. At that point the pandemic hit us. Presently when I see the yield, I feel pleased that I am an aspect of this film. It's perfect by they way it looks. I am in any event not living in an air pocket and realize what's going on out there, devour a ton of public and worldwide substance and I am glad that the substance I am related with, it's very today and upmarket and pair with the contemporary work that is occurring.
Who is Bonny, your character in the film? She is a writer, very bhola and marginally moronic however with a brilliant heart. Mon ta puro clear and mathatao khanikta clear (snickers). That is what I look like at Bonny. No savvy individual would have purchased that thought in any case. The way Param's character (Raju, a cab driver) disclosed it to her (about Khelechi Ajgubi, an African public, being a footballer) and she gets it, even while shooting it, I felt OMG! (Giggles) Param continued saying she isn't imbecilic, only a little bhola bhala.
She is from the mofussil and on the off chance that she can't break a major news and get a strong balance in the city, she'll be offered. In this way, she has a ton in question. Bonny isn't me, yet I adored playing her. I am a major aficionado of Joey from F.R.I.E.N.D.S and I have for the longest time been itching to play a stupid character. Despite the fact that Bonny isn't Joey imbecilic. Raju and Bonny kind of meet incidentally. He takes a gander at me and thinks of this arrangement. He comes selling me a phony story and I get it and what follows is the film. The entire kind of the film is interesting. A ton of entertainers feel that parody is the most troublesome kind.
What do you feel? It is troublesome in light of the fact that your planning must be correct. You need to include your own flavors which, we continued doing while at the same time shooting Ogo Bodhu Sundori (the mainstream uber sequential which saw Ritabhari become an easily recognized name). Lolita never attempted to be amusing. Same for Bonny and Raju and Khelechi. The outfit cast includes interesting amusing characters… be it Paranda (Paran Bandopadhyay), Kharajda (Kharaj Mukherjee), Kanchanda (Kanchan Mullick), or Saswatada (Chatterjee). I don't actually think satire is the hardest.
Being a persuading reprobate or vamp is the hardest without trying too hard. Unthinkable in Andhadhun isn't exaggerating anything or Priyanka Chopra in Aitraaz or state Bob Biswas in Kahaani. I figure I would need to work the hardest for that sort of a job since I am totally a white individual. Was it scaring to be encircled by entertainers who are known for their comic planning? Truly, I never feel threatened by anybody I work with on the grounds that at whatever point I step on the shooting floor, I sense that I am going to class and there are bunches of educators and there is the head instructor who will manage me. I get truly jumbled if the chief isn't arranged... I realize that the chief must be arranged with his vision. They are so easily acceptable… stunning. Furthermore, the vitality was so high on the sets. One thing I have truly detracted from the experience is to be unconstrained.
Do you follow football? No! Sports isn't my thing. In the event that I was playing, I would appreciate. Thus, I loath watching a shoot. In the event that I am shooting, I will appreciate. I went for the Mukkabaaz shoot since I respect Anurag (Kashyap) to such an extent as a chief. I was there for the peak go for two hours and afterward was chilling with my closest companion since I got so exhausted following two hours. AK is so chill and arranged with his vision. That is everything I could accumulate. Individuals figure you can truly get a great deal.
You really can't on the grounds that film-production is an entire cycle. Things being what they are, you've never really liked an athlete? Not on the grounds that how great a player he is, yet, state… (David) Beckham. I have my reasons. Take a gander at him and you will likewise have your own reasons. Anyway, did you gaze upward 'tiki taka'? I asked Maddy (Madhuja B

Satire and Subversion in Ishmael Reed’s “Conjugating Hindi”
Back in the 1800s, South Asian men arrived in the United States as peddlers or seamen. According to historian Vivek Bald in Bengali Harlem and the Lost Histories of South Asian America, they were single, and instead of creating enclaves of their own, they assimilated and married into Black and Puerto Rican communities in areas like Harlem and New Orleans. The fluidity between Black American and South Asian American communities didn’t disappear, but continued into the Jim Crow era, when some Black Americans put on turbans and pretended to be Indian to avoid harassment. Some used exotica to sell the illusion, and at that time of pre-yoga, when people knew even less about South Asians than they know now, the ruse worked. People could not tell the difference between Black people and the people identified as “Hindoos.”
Due to the United States’s immigration laws and policies, over the last several decades, professional Indians have become much more visible to the mainstream than working-class South Asian immigrants had previously been. Their collective economic success in the United States has been used to produce the harmful model minority myth, a myth that aggressively omits the numerous structural factors that have conferred advantages on members of this group: caste, class privilege, Brahmin and other upper-caste networks in America, India’s affirmative action laws, socialism built into India’s constitution, and learning English due to India’s prior status as a British colony. Although many Indian Americans subscribe to the model minority myth, Indian Americans as a bloc have been reliable Democratic voters for decades, and there are notable Democratic politicians with South Asian ancestry such as Kamala Harris and Pramila Jayapal. But more recently, several Indian Americans have risen to prominence under an anti-Black, anti-immigrant, far-right agenda (much to the mortification and embarrassment of their progressive counterparts who have set up a Desi Wall of Shame): Dinesh D’Souza, Nikki Haley, Ajit Pai, Raj Shah, Seema Verma, Dimple Shah, and Shalli Kumar.
The history of affinities and tensions between Black and Indian communities in America, as well as how White conservatives and liberals have exploited Indian immigrants over the last few decades to justify and produce further discrimination against Black communities, sets the foundation for Ishmael Reed’s ingenious, razor-sharp, seriocomic novel Conjugating Hindi, published by Dalkey Archive Press. Like other Reed novels, Conjugating Hindi is not only a novel, but is also a graphic novel, heavily illustrated with provocative hand-drawn cartoons. In the novel, you can see the aforementioned history upended and satirized for the Trump era.
***
“California is still the world’s biggest hideout,” the novel begins. Peter Bowman, or “Boa,” is a Black professional who is fleeing something from his past. He moves to North Oakland, where he teaches at a community college and explores the gentrified city. After taking an early retirement, Boa becomes a public intellectual and is invited to debate with a right-wing Hindu “intellectual” egomaniac Shashi Paramara on the subject of “Was Slavery All That Bad?” The Columbia Speakers Bureau tells him: “There’s an opportunity for you to make some more money. You’ll be able to break out of the Black History Month ghetto.” Boa mentally notes that the event, like Oakland, was being “gentrified” by non-Black people. Facing a tax audit, Boa needs the money offered for the debates, and reluctantly participates. Shashi argues that slavery wasn’t that bad, and is received with open arms and adulation by self-serving White right-wingers. Boa argues the opposite, standing in as a kind of straw man, and is ignored by Shashi, as well as the rest of the audience.
Shashi has a radical sister, Kala, a professor of Post-Colonialist Studies, with ink-black skin and who doesn’t fit in with her Brahmin family. She believes English is an imperialist language and demands that only Hindi be spoken in India. Boa is immediately intrigued, but his young Black chauffeur warns him off: “Indians can be as racist toward Black people as Whites. Some have called them the most racist people in the world. Not only do they hate Blacks but they have problems with the darker members of their own families. You got mobs beating African students…”
Boa worries, “A new bunch of racists coming into the country adding to the ones who are already here?” The chauffeur tells him that to Shashi and his Brahmin entourage, “[Y]ou’re a Dalit. An Untouchable.” Boa assumes this is ridiculous, citing Gandhi, but this gets him thinking, and he goes down the rabbit hole of learning Hindi (hence, the title) and exploring literature about South Asia.
Political tensions escalate. Eventually during one debate, the moderator announces that India just shot down an American passenger plane. The conservatives who had been nodding along with Shashi call him an Indian N-word and try to beat him up. He’s rescued by security. Meanwhile, Boa is rescued by Kala, who pulls up on a Harley and drives him home before heading off to her host’s home in the Berkeley Hills (her host is a Black woman whose best-selling memoir is entitled My Triple Oppression). Before she leaves, Boa asks how the mob missed her, and she responds that White Americans are always mixing her up with a Black person, that being Black doesn’t work in India, but in the United States it comes in handy for her. Boa is baffled.
The plane incident triggers all-too-believable xenophobic and racist mayhem. Indians wearing traditional clothing are dragged off BART. Indians bus from Silicon Valley to the San Jose airport and face racist insults. Mobs start hunting Indians. A Fugitive Indian Law is debated in Congress. Shashi comes to Boa, asking to hide out in his place, dressed like a “hip-hopper” in order to avoid being harassed. Boa agrees to let him stay, a shrewd callback to how South Asian peddlers sought and received refuge with Black and Puerto Rican communities in the 19th century.
The novel goes heavy into informal debate at this juncture, with Boa eventually confronting Shashi on his anti-Blackness (which Boa comes to recognize also as a kind of self-loathing and determined refusal to face facts regarding the British Empire). In his satirical rendition of the informal debates between Shashi and Boa, Reed nails the Dinesh D’Souzian failure to comprehend basic historical facts about both America and India. He sketches Shashi as both a naïve innocent and opportunist. The novel turns at points into a graphic sex comedy, with sex itself as another kind of border crossing — for really, how else could Boa communicate deeply with someone as obtuse as Shashi? The debates and sex comedy give rise to action, and then to tragic climax. The denouement genuinely satisfies.
In a reprisal of Reed’s Blues City: A Walk in Oakland, former mayor Jerry Brown is given a tongue-lashing in Conjugating Hindi for the “ethnic cleansing” and gentrification of Oakland that he believes has transformed it into a “hipster playground.” This serves as a symbol for the gentrification of Black History Month as well. The novel is more descriptive than Mumbo Jumbo, not only of Oakland scenes, but also of Boa’s internal landscape, which is shaped by academic texts and movies. Blended into factual material are fictions — the president at the time of the novel is “Kleiner Fuhrer,” for instance. In the kind of self-referential and darkly hilarious note also found in brilliant novelist Percival Everett’s work, Ishmael Reed himself makes appearances as a character throughout the novel. Also appearing is Chappie Puttbutt — Reed’s fictional Black literary critic who sides with whomever he can to get tenure in Reed’s 1993 novel Japanese by Spring (one of Chappie’s books is entitled What If I Prefer Beethoven Over Coltrane?).
***
Conjugating Hindi is a further exploration of Reed’s alternative Black aesthetic of Neo-HooDoo, informed by bricolage and jazz improvisation. It is not quite as poetic or gnostic as Reed’s 1972 masterpiece Mumbo Jumbo, but it is brilliant — the same sort of experimental brilliance observable in the fiction of Thomas Pynchon or the cut-up technique of William S. Burroughs — and more accessible. It hews to the satiric register of Reed’s Japanese By Spring and Juice.
The novel is what some academics have dubbed a trickster text, a text informed by the mischievous, shape-shifting, slippery figure of the trickster, found in folklore throughout the world. Implicit in Reed’s formal style, as well as his content, is the trickster disregard for caste of any kind. Heedless of boundaries and resistant to being pinned down or hemmed in, the novel is driven almost entirely by Reed’s deep, free-wheeling curiosity about why things are the way they are in regard to the use of the model minority myth against Black communities.
Reed’s incorporation of caste into the fictional debate between Boa and Shashi is fascinating and insightful — he understands the rigidity and cruelty of the caste system far better than many American writers and critics, who assume caste is a relic of the past or synonymous with class, rather than something far more insidious. This remains a set identity that a Hindu possesses from birth, describing his degree of “purity” or “pollution,” and consequently his entitlement to respect, as well as a script for social relations, including arranged marriages. There are moments where Reed brings his exploration of caste and race together in a way that felt a touch too pat, binding together a little too neatly anti-Blackness with the Brahmin identity of Indian immigrants assimilating into the far right. Hinduism can be fairly described as heterogeneous and protean and it does have trickster-like figures such as Krishna or the mohini, but the Brahminical mindset is a strongly anti-trickster perspective, and so those with this mindset could find equally appealing certain strains of center-left thought that push rigid identity, scripted social relations, and endogamy. In any case, by novel’s end, Reed’s novel surprises and delights and for the most part, he takes every opportunity to be artistically more subversive, more slant, more true.
The most famous Dalit intellectual of all time, B. R. Ambedkar wrote in The Untouchables,
It must be recognized that the selfish interest of a person or of the class to which he belongs always acts as an internal limitation which regulates the direction of his intellect. […] A Voltaire among the Brahmins would be a positive danger to the maintenance of a civilisation which is contrived to maintain Brahmanic supremacy. […] If any non-Brahmin were to make such an attempt the Brahmin scholars would engage in a conspiracy of silence, take no notice of him, condemn him outright on some flimsy grounds or dub his work useless.
This is an observation that holds true in the Indian-American diaspora, too. So far, nobody in the United States is publishing any Voltaire-like satires of caste and race by a Dalit American or a non-Brahmin Indian American, but this bold and memorable novel by a brilliant Black author is the next best thing.
Conjugating Hindi is a firebrand’s novel, the crackling, overflowing, pugnacious novel of someone who doesn’t care about genre boundaries any more than he cares about historical boundaries, but who does care deeply about innovating. In an interview with Callaloo that was conducted in 1988 at Reed’s home, Reed commented:
Well, Afro-American artists have always had to struggle against the middle-class. […] I mean when you write the truth, sometimes the black middle class complains or the white right wing will complain or the left wing will complain. […] I think most Afro-American artists catch it from all sides. I think most ethnic artists catch it from all sides.
As the United States’s ideals come under increasing attack, we need more flame-throwers like septuagenarian Ishmael Reed — more fighters, more tricksters, more eagle-eyed observers with an incendiary spirit, more dazzlingly original artist-writers — willing to defy what is permissible to say, willing to catch it on all sides, and willing to run over boundaries of all kinds into genuinely new or neglected territory.

Eken Babu, a big surprise this November
Tumblr media
‘Eken Babu’ one of the famous and successful original web series by hoichoi released its third season in November 2019. On 25th November 2019 hoichoi launched the trailer of Eken Babu season 3. Later, 28th November the actual series started streaming on hoichoi.
Let’s come to the story part where Eken Babu really shows its shine. This series is based on a forgotten Bengali detective character, ‘Eken Babu’ written by Sujan Dasgupta. It's hard to imagine Eken Babu as a detective, who looks like an ordinary Bengali gentleman and a great miser. However, he does have a sweet-as-saccharine, silly-as-a-goose nature that’s mildly annoying, and he loves to smoke, just like in the books. And, he is just as witty.
In season 1, the tale set on contemporary Bangalore. Eken Babu reaches an apartment in Bangalore, much to the annoyance of its residence, and later finds one of his neighbors dead. With his intelligence and a sharp mind, he solves the mystery.
Let's come to the second season where Eken Babu is very much excited to celebrate the Puja festival in Bangalore. But, a murder in Bangalore creates tension among everyone. Later, Goyenda Eken comes across some evidence that turns the case to an unthinkable situation.
Season 3 is the latest in the complete series and it’s a special one cause this time Eken Babu did his EKENGIRI internationally, in Dhaka Bangladesh. In this season Eken Babu flies to Dhaka to attend a literary meet. In that seminar, a man named Masud suffers a heart attack and Eken babu smells something fishy in it. Pramatha and Bapi discouraged him to stop the investigation but Eken didn’t stop there.
Verdict: Overall Eken Babu is a web series that gives entertainment and can be loved by any genre of audience. Cause, it has mystery, thrills, and tint of comedy as well.

The Big Bong Theory - Chapter 38: Goodbye, Love (on Wattpad) https://my.w.tt/rBIjHfJsUcb Triya has complains! For one, she hates being called a Bong (short for the Bengali community in Kolkata, India). To add to her woes, her life in Kolkata is slower than the movement of the ramshackle public buses that lumber around the city. But her father and uncle chose this city to start their new lives, when they left their father's home 28 years ago. The only two people who see eye to eye with her are her cousins, Joy and Risha. Life would have slugged in its own uneventful pace, if Triya's father had not received a CD and a letter. A trivial object that sucks Triya and her family back to their roots in the most in incredulous manner possible. For Triya, Risha and Joy, it marks the beginning of an eccentric journey into the past. A journey littered with secrets, that form the crux of the Big Bong theory.

That way I loved all the projects of Crazy Mohan and Kamal Hassan. These were movies and there was slight competition between actors to out-do-each-other in comic timing. A good comedy is one which uses the language nuances with finesse. Crazy Mohan actor-cum-writer sometimes wore all hats in the field of verbal comedy.
