MAJOR SPOILERS FOR CRIMSON SKY
When Blackthorne stepped up to be her second as she was about to commit seppuku (suicide) in Shōgun‘s pivotal Episode 9, that was the “moment she realizes that what they share is much deeper than what she had anticipated,” Sawai tells TV Insider. “That’s the gesture that changes everything.”
Tumblr media
Seconding her seppuku means striking the fatal blow. Mariko would first stab herself in the gut, and then Blackthorne would decapitate her as the tradition mandates. That he was ready to do this for Mariko was the ultimate symbol of Blackthorne’s evolution from the beginning of the series to now. It’s the highest sign of respect that he can give, as it prioritizes her cultural customs and loyalty over his own desires for her to keep living. And he begged her to keep living.
“He’s taking her over his own religion and beliefs,” Sawai explains of the powerful moment. “A couple scenes before that he’s asking her to keep living for him. And so I think that it just shows that he really, really cares, and that is the most romantic thing that you could ever do for someone that you love.”

They slept together once more after the thwarted seppuku. The energy between them in that moment was a defiant refusal to deny their feelings any longer, initiated by a yearning Blackthorne. But even if Buntaro had died, Sawai doesn’t see a world where Mariko and Blackthorne would have ended up together forever. “I don’t think it was realistic for that to happen,” she admits.
Mariko was never in denial about her love for Blackthorne, even if she hid it deep within herself. “Circumstances are not going to let her be with him, and so you can’t keep chasing something that you’re not going to be,” Sawai says. “It’s not healthy to keep wanting to chase it, but it’s undeniable what they share. That connection is truly just their own thing. It’s very, very intimate.”
Mariko never believed they would end up together, but Sawai reveals that her translator definitely “holds onto” their connection as a comfort in tough times. She doesn’t let her guard down again, however, until circumstances push her to let go of all restraint.

Mariko’s seppuku was stopped at the last moment by Lord Ishido (Takehiro Hira), but he sent a group of assassins to kill her later that night. When she, Blackthorne, Lord Yabushige (Tadanobu Asano), and other women were cornered and outnumbered, Blackthorne desperately tried to protect them from canon fire in a shed, whereas Mariko accepted death. “Anjin-sama, let it come,” she told her lover with tears in her eyes. You could see every ounce of love Mariko had for Blackthorne in this brief, tender moment before the blast killed her. Sawai played that scene as Mariko’s one chance to let all of her love for Blackthorne pour out.

“I remember just looking at Cosmo/Blackthorne and feeling like this is her goodbye. She’s not going to be able to come up to him and hold his hand and say this stuff,” Sawai shares. “It was wishful also to just accept your fate because that’s something that Blackthorne couldn’t do. He’s trying to control everything, and she’s just someone who’s like, we live and we die. We control nothing beyond that. She’s just looking at him like, I’m going to go, but thank you. And I hope you understand.”

WHY ARE THERE SO FEW SHŌGUN (Not just romance but any kind) FANFICS!?
Like, the series is incredible, I'm grateful that my stepfather introduced this wonderful series to me, and in my opinion, the main couple is great (and sad, very tragic), but it's scary how I had to struggle to find a Mariko x John fanfic relay (does anyone have a name for this ship? I thought of something related to the sea, but I'm not sure), and with the current four episodes, it is now possible for the fanfic writers's troubled minds to create a fanfic of at least two thousand words, seriously, they deserve it! I can think of possibilities, like, what if it was an alternate universe?
What if Mariko ended up in England for God knows what? I really don't know why I thought this, just that it would be a very sudden role reversal.
What if Toranaga had appointed her to be John's consort? I mean, the moment Buntaro died, a widow was born, in this case, Mariko!
What if she was married to someone other than Buntaro? I wish she wasn't married but knowing ancient Japan as it was...
What if Fuji's husband and baby hadn't died? I mean, damn that scene made me cry, it was a little baby, I wish I could change that.
What if Mariko's father hadn't died? I know we know almost nothing about him at the moment, but moments of reflection.
What if (again, alternate universe) there was magic involved in the story? I mean, it's ancient Japan, this is the perfect time to let your knowledge of Japanese legends run wild!
If John had done something and been able to recognize Mariko in the dim light of their night in their room?
What if Mariko ended up sleeping there and he woke up and confirmed it was her?
What if it took place in the modern world? I don't know about you, but I love fanfics that portray a modern setting, it's really cool, for me, Toranaga would almost end up being a politician!
What if (this one touches on the system of power, hierarchy and structural status of women in ancient Japanese society) Mariko had a higher position and was someone even more trustworthy than Toranaga?
What if John and Mariko had met before (through misfortune or any other factor of fate) and had some relationship? Like in a theater!
I literally developed an entire story from scratch just to make these two have a daughter (her name is Umi — I haven't decided if I'll keep that one yet — she has blue eyes, wavy hair and is completely Japanese, a Mariko's mini copy) and develop a whole material with this chaos! I know that the story is focused on politics, and not on romance, I know, but you can never dream too much and I like it when you know how to keep the fragile line of politics-romance well. I just hope there are more fanfics about them, I need fanfics about them!!

Mariko x Blackthorne
(spoilers for Shōgun episode 1x09 'Crimson Sky')
Tumblr media
I'm still devastated by how gently and tenderly she smiles at him as he's frantically trying for a way out, a way to change their fate. All that love laid bare in her tender gaze. She loves him with an almost unbearable sweetness.

The absolute tenderness held within Mariko's gaze of love for Blackthorne destroyed my heart. I can't even fathom it.

to the edge of the world
Shōgun 2024 | Blackthorne x Mariko | Rated T | 2.1k
He cannot sleep.  Perhaps it is because, even after so many months in this country, he has still not accustomed himself to sleeping on the floor, with only a woven mat as a mattress and a pillow filled with hard grains to cushion his head.  But he suspects it is something else. Someone else.  To hear Mariko-sama speak of her past—to hear her speak of herself at all—was a rare thing, made even more unnerving by the quiet finality with which she spoke. It was natural to want to right an injustice, especially one visited upon one’s family. But she did not seem to desire vengeance or even public redress. Merely resolution. It is an unsettled word, implying a cessation, a loose thread snipped, and he is unsettled by it.

as a non-book reader/ non-original watcher, I can only assume that the reason Toranaga “gifted” lady kiku to John is to test them? Will he sleep with Kiku with Mariko right there, will she make him even if it goes against her heart, will she jump at the chance to be with him in Kiku’s stead like Kiku suggests to her - essentially, I think he wants to know how deeply they care for each other? But I’m not sure why - is it punishment or does he just want to know if he can use Mariko to control John???
Like the number of times they explicitly said to Mariko that the brothel is a private place as if to lower her defences and try to entice her to give in to her feelings. I’m assuming they will be reporting right back to Toranaga, which Mariko is smart enough to know, but I’m wondering why exactly? I mean it makes sense that if John loves Mariko that could be used against him to keep him there but he’s kinda stuck anyway… or is it simply about honour and the fact that Mariko is married and has thus committed a crime (but do they even know that for sure)?
I feel like they’ve laid it on pretty thick that everyone knows they care for each other more than the should but how ???? I feel like we didn’t get the chance to see anyone notice (other than maybe Fuji) and then all of a sudden there’s this plot line without really being able to follow the reasoning
Is it because of something Buntaro shared with Toranaga in their conversation that we really only caught the tail end of ??? And what happens if we find out that John didn’t sleep with Kiku? I think he did because he knew how important it was to keep Mariko safe, but I’m so unsure where this is leading considering even if they didn’t sleep together it’s pretty obvious that Kiku could tell they wanted to which she will report back about… Any other ideas or am I completely off base?

The way Blackthorne drools over Mariko from the very first moment as he wonders whether she is married and what she would be like in bed was exactly what I wanted from the book 🤗

"Mariko-san?" At once fingers reached up in the darkness and touched his lips, cautioning silence. He nodded, understanding the awful risk they were taking. - Shōgun by James Clavell
