The originals really should've been obsessed with Bonnie. The way Bennett witches were wrapped up in everything, they most likely knew several of her ancestors over the centuries. Damon too should've come to mystic falls seeking Bonnie out, especially with the somergraham chemistry it could've been really interesting

so do you think bonnie needs kids to be happy??
Bonnie doesn’t need kids to be happy. No one needs kids to be happy. Not everyone wants to have kids. But Bonnie does say she wanted the life they Caroline was having with Stefan. Which was having a home, a boyfriend, kids, and a family. She wanted to have something to come home too. She was tired of being alone in the world.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Unlike characters like Hayley, Caroline and Elena. This was the only time Bonnie ever admitted to wanting a future that had nothing to do with anyone else from Mystic Falls.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
All Bonnie has ever wanted is family. She immediately wanted to go with Lucy after just meeting her. Despite loving her friends, that connection doesn't feel the same. It makes sense for Bonnie to want to settle down one day and have a family of her own. Children are part of that dream. She's more than just a good friend and a powerful witch. She'd want to create a happy home as a mother. Is having kids a necessity? No but it's what she wants and would make her happy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bonnie’s relationship with her mother is strained. Abby never wanted to stay with her or check in unless she’s forced. Rudy kept busy with work and her last memory of him was dying in front of her. Grams is gone. Bonnie’s alone and she didn’t want to stay that way. If the other women could want more for themselves. Why shouldn’t Bonnie? She already spent 8 seasons fixing and caring for her friends. What is the difference if they’re related to her?
TVD writers were able to write an entire five-season-spin-off around the Mikaelson’s, give two seasons around the Gemini coven, and give us six seasons of Liz Forbes. All of those characters are white. The storylines and push for the one black family weren’t there. They written Bonnie to be so disconnected from them and it’s bullshit.
So if Bonnie fans in any way are creating more family for Bonnie. Changing up their lore to sound like a family and not women playing servitude then YES I’m for it.

the subtle racism portrayed by Julie Plec and TVDU (especially Klaroline fans) fans as well towards Michael Trevino (Tyler Lockwood) is something that will always irk my soul. Both the actor and the character were done SO BADLYYYYYY. I know that since Tyler is written as a white character, technically his writing wasn’t “racist”, but I have reason to believe that Julie may have written him the way she did due to her issues with Michael Trevino.
What do you think about Tyler Lockwood? I think he definitely is one of the characters with the most potential besides Bonnie, etc. Most of the POC in the show (actors/characters) had the most potential and were sidelined.
IN FACT, I can say the same about Enzo! Yeah, Enzo St John is a canonically white character, but Michael Malarkey is a mixed race man (Italian/Palestinian-Lebanese), and we know how Julie is towards POC.
Like I’m not trying to blame all the bad writing on racism and discrimination, but all the POC actors/characters have shitty storylines and a lot of them are racist.
Lucy, Sarah Salvatore (the black Salvatore), Enzo, Tyler, Marcel, Vincent, Bonnie, Qetsiyah, etc.
Coincidence?
Tumblr media
Whenever I discuss race, I do want to preface it by saying, I am white so I am speaking from that point of view. If you disagree or have another perspective, I would love to hear it.
That being said, I don't even think we can call what happened on the set and in the show "subtle" racism. There was such overt racism throughout the show that it is hard to discuss the show in any way without discussing racism. Just because Julie Plec doesn't view her actions as blatantly racist, it doesn't mean they are not.
Just the fact that they had two actors who are ethically not white but were portrayed as white is telling. Both Michael Trevino and Michael Malarkey were made to appear white in the show when there really wasn't a necessity for it. Tyler being Mexican could have added to the history of the wolves or it could have even come from his mom's side, allowing them to cast a Latina woman. For Malarkey, his race isn't really discussed but it would have been so easy to show him making Bonnie a nice Lebanese meal when they were staying at the cabin (cause lord knows the zionists running the show wouldn't allow him to be Palestinian). I also personally just like Tyler and Enzo more than Damon. I would have been fine with killing Damon off earlier to allow more screen time for them.
A year or so ago, my friend began watching the show for the first time and by the time we got to The Originals, as soon as Sabine walked on screen, she said "Does she get killed this episode?" People of color, especially women of color, were treated as disposable by the network. To the point that Tyler and Enzo likely only survived as long as they did because they were "white" characters. But it is also still obvious how much worse they were treated than any other side characters. Tyler and Enzo are both killed in such nonsensical ways and then they have no justice or even mourning. Tyler was a lifelong friend of the Mystic Falls gang and yet Damon isn't even sternly lectured for killing him for zero reason. Tyler had escaped the supernatural world. What was the point of dragging him back on the show just to kill him and have Damon suffer no consequences. He was Caroline's first epic love and she just forgives Damon for it? And what was the point of Enzo's death? Just to make Bonnie suffer more? Just to make her attend the wedding of his murderer? I know Stefan had his humanity off, but that doesn't change the fact that Enzo was dead and Bonnie was still grieving.
Moving on to how the fandom treats them. There is honestly so much hate in this fandom sometimes, and you're right, there is definitely a racial element to it. The way Tyler is treated by the fandom is so telling. I don't know if a lot of the fandom even knows Michael Trevino's ethnicity, but he is clearly seen as "other" or "less than" by the fandom. We also have to acknowledge how his "angry outbursts" are seen as unacceptable but when Klaus does it, it is because he is just so "passionate." The scene where Caroline keeps pushing Tyler to forgive her for sleeping with his mother's killer comes to mind. He snaps but he makes no move to touch her, and this is after repeatedly telling her to leave and her pushing his boundaries. I have seen the fandom call him "disgusting" and an "abuser" because of this, celebrating the fact that Stefan punches him. Stefan uses physical violence against Tyler's words, yet Tyler is the abuser? Then we have, Klaus, who runs her through with a coat hanger and bites her because she said something slightly rude to him and he is praised for "saving her life." It's hard to believe there isn't a racial element here. I often say Klaus gets pretty privilege, but why isn't that awarded to Tyler? Because we can't deny that Michael Trevino is attractive (I'd say more attractive than Joseph Morgan but y'all will come for me).
There was so much left of Tyler's story. The fact that they even had the Lockwoods as the protectors of Inadu's bones in TO would have been a perfect way to bring him back. Can you imagine Hayley or Klaus having to go beg him for help? It would have been such an amazing moment. But no, instead they bring Matt Davis onto the show to make sure he could infect every single spinoff.
You mention all of these characters and that's just in TVD. TO was no better. One of my mutuals recently got into a Twitter 'discussion' with one of the writers and the writer attempted to claim that the Mikaelsons were white supremacists and that was the point of TO, to show it was bad. Yet, when did they do that? How did they show being a white supremacist is bad? The Mikaelsons were at the top of the food chain the entire time. Yes, they constantly had people coming for them, yet they always won and the writing was always done in a way to make the audience root for them to win. How many POC characters were sacrificed in order to prop up the main characters throughout the shows?
Whenever we talk about racism in the show, we have to talk about Bonnie. Bonnie was constantly having to sacrifice her own wants and happiness in order for her white friends, and even enemies, to get what they want. Often when she set a boundary, the fandom villainized her. According to the writing and the fandom, her entire purpose was to serve the white characters. That is blatant racism.
But it's not just Bonnie. It's her entire ancestry. The fandom seems to believe Emily is Katherine's friend in the flashbacks, but she is clearly either being enslaved or at least some type of servant to Katherine. We can go all the way back to Ayana who Esther stole her spell to create the vampires. Or to Qetsiyah who was cheated on and used in order to aid the white doppelgangers. These things separately may not raise any flags, but the fact that we see it happen repeatedly throughout the show tells us it's more than just a coincidence.
Let's not forget Damon was not a confederate solider in the books. Julie added that. And yes I know he deserted but he says it is basically because he was missing Katherine, not because he morally opposed what he was fighting for. They added the founding families and yet didn't make the Bennetts apart of it even though they had been there longer than anyone. They were actively celebrating slave owners. Tyler's mom makes a passing comment of why they have the chains in the cellars and everyone just moves on. They chose to have the Mikaelsons live on a plantation in New Orleans. They chose to hire a very white cast and make it even whiter by white washing and killing off POCs.
Sure TVD is set in Virginia, but Virginia is only 65% white. So why was the cast 99% white? Then they create a whole show in New Orleans where 59% of the population is black, yet we still have a majority white cast? And when they introduce POCs it is usually to serve the white cast. Both Vincent and Eva were brought on so there bodies could literally be used by the white characters. Eva and Vincent's trauma were completely neglected and Eva was even killed off to allow Rebekah to use her body as she pleased whenever Claire Holt wasn't available to be on set. I've already discussed the difference in how Aurora is treated versus Celeste by the show and the fandom. You can read that here. Marcel is constantly belittled and sidelined, even after he is upgraded. There are so many witches of color in New Orleans, yet Davina is the most powerful? Why couldn't she have been played by a POC?
The show repeatedly dehumanizes people of color, especially the women. It's not a coincidence. It is pure racism. And because the show does it, the fandom does it. I am not taking responsibility away from the fandom. Each individual person should know better. But media is supposed to influence society. If we grow up with media that glorifies and celebrates different races, cultures, ethnicities, the fandom will begin to as well. Julie had no desire to do that. All she cared about was ratings and her own racist viewpoint of the world. She could have done more research, or hell, even just listened to her cast, but she chose not to. The writing of the show suffered because of it, but even worse the actors and even fans suffer because of it.
There are so many great creators in this fandom who are POCs and I highly suggest following them. They are able to give better insight in the discussion of racism in the show. But please keep in mind, they do not owe you their time or energy. It is up to each of us to do our own research and learn.
Thank you for the ask! I hope I answered it. Sorry it was so long.

https://www.tumblr.com/melmedardasworld/730246048285605888/klaus-and-bonnie-both-have-the-habit-of-solving meta please??
Since I received this message from you a while ago anon in relation to this post, I finally got time to expand on my initial note.
Despite their vastly different background, personalities and approaches to life, both Klaus and Bonnie share a profound sense of loneliness (because they are so different from the others in the group) and a desperate longing for love and acceptance that leads them to solve things by themselves. It’s more fleshed out in Klaus than Bonnie, but I feel that there are enough clues to zoom in on how they deal with solving problems and usually succeeding.
I think both harbor deep-seated abandonment wounds that fuel their need to take matters into their own hands.
Bonnie's journey is marked by the profound absence of parental figures. Abandoned by her mother at a young age (and repeatedly as she grew up since other people had to call Abby to even come and see her) and with her father seldom present because of his focus on his work as a pharmaceutical rep, Bonnie found solace and guidance in her grandmother, Grams. However, once Grams' died she had no parental figure. At that time, Bonnie learns the harsh reality of relying on- and raising herself. But all that pain and hyper-independence didn’t prepare / teach Bonnie (she downright ignored it at times too) to be so self-sacrificial time and again for the ones she loved. While it’s admirable, I think it also masks a deeper fear for Bonnie of being cast aside / ignored once more. It's a subconscious drive to prove her worth and indispensability, stemming from a childhood marked by neglect and loss, and also a boyfriend that cheated on her after she SAVED his life. Not just that, her loyalty got rewarded with her death every other season.
In contrast, Klaus also carries the scars of familial betrayal and rejection. His are more visible because of the toxic environment he was raised with an abusive (step) father. His transformation into the vampire-hybrid only deepens his sense of isolation, as his own mother and stepfather subject him to further torment and abandonment. Despite his thirst for power, Klaus's true desire lies in finding a place where he belongs, isn’t alone, and loved. With him, he also protects his family, but in the process ruins their lives by either daggering them or killing his sibling’s loved ones. He thinks its for their own good and doesn’t take their wishes into account. It doesn’t help that Elijah (sometimes Rebekah) usually encourage it too.
Despite their parallels in how they go about things and their abandonment issues, the similarities between Bonnie and Klaus, is their intrinsic need to control their destinies and that of their loved ones / family. Whether driven by paranoia or the desire to protect loved ones, both refuse to be passive players in their own narratives.

Its funny how the second bonnie was being recongized for her power, we get a bunch of “powerful” white witches IN FUCKING NEW ORLEANS OF ALL PLACES??? (really julie if you wanted to pick a location with magical background use salem mass, oh wait then you might have to include mentions of the bennetts if you actually recall s1 dialogue actually how is there no mention of bennetts in one of the biggest witch communities esp since the supernatural talk)
(Vincent really the only powerful magic user consistently shown Ntm how rushed inandu/werewolf lore was oh well!)
Mind you even though plec wanted them to be powerful if you really look at it their not. Which is the opposite of bonnie predicment because she’s constantly shown to be powerful but the narrative tries to tell you she not(with the nosebleeds🙄)
No one ever compares hope to her family witches, i never seen anyone try to compare davina and freya magic even though the originals at one point makes a dig about davina not understand freya magic yet everyone compares every other witch to Bonnie because deep down they know she’s as powerful as its gets
-
Davina- had four harvest girls magic in her and her magic is ancestral magic and nola witches cant pratice magic outside of nola
Dahlia and Freya- dahlia immortality spell is legit the worse spell in the game. Wydm you’re only live life awake for 10years and you physically age. The fact that the magic was building up between them and her/freya most powerful moments were them linked… i dont find her all that impressive first how much knowledge can you retain of magic something that everychanging in one year, realistically even if you were powerful you would have no expertise. Might i mention that dahlia and her whole coven couldn’t protect themselves from humans, and esther couldn’t or wouldnt stop/neutralize mikael from being an abuser. I doubt their descendants have much magic

i'm to the part where bonnie meets abby again and i'm just... there's so much to unpack here
i still can't believe the showrunners thought it would be a cool and neat idea to make her adopted brother become her love interest 😭 like...... what the fuck were they on, i'm laughing (but it's not funny)
they basically copy pasted bonnie's situation (having to be a servant to vampires/supernaturals) to give an explanation of why abby left her to start her life over. i'm not even sure how it makes sense that mikael was in mystic falls looking for the doppelganger. why did he think she was going to be there? no one knew katherine had a baby, to my knowledge. and elena was still a baby when mikael was there looking for her, so it's not like she looked like kath? also, it was established already that not many people knew about the originals to begin with, so it's not likely a witch tipped him off (and besides that, are they trying to suggest there's a spell for finding doppelgangers? if there was, it would create a lot of plot holes, so i would hope not?). hence, it doesn't even seem to make sense why abby had to 'lead mikael away' and desiccate him in charlotte. it feels like they barely even tried to create a reason that made sense. it's true that witches do get caught up in vampire business but up until now in the show, we've pretty much only seen that with the bennetts... so they tried to say that's why abby left bonnie. i'm not sure why this rubs me the wrong way but it does.
to play devil's advocate, here are some people offering some potential reasons to mikael searching for the doppelganger in mystic falls:
Tumblr media
i don't recall the part about the gemini coven keeping track of doppelgangers, but will update while i'm doing this rewatch. the part about the nexus vorti is a little more interesting, but it's also not given any weight in tvd (or at least early tvd, i don't remember the end of the show). still need to rewatch the originals but i don't think this is a good explanation. i could be completely wrong on all this, but these are just my first thoughts/confusion.
but moving on, the whole way this episode started actually irks me. because we're finally learning about bonnie's mom and for some reason she's sitting in elena's house when damon walks in with the info on abby. why do we never see bonnie's house? this episode is about her and her family and even still it's centered on elena. they even have bonnie brush off talking about her mom to ask elena about damon in the car ride. at this point we haven't even seen the parent she actually supposedly lives with, either

🔥 + bonnies friendships (either in general or with a specific person)
unpopular opinion: on Bonnie’s friends but in the end it makes sense why Enzo, Damon and Caroline are arguably the most important people to Bonnie first then Elena etc etc. Bonnie(and the rest of the group) would’ve been okay if she/them let Elena go. I know the writing says otherwise but hear me out. — lowkey turned into a barolena meta lol.
Bonenzo/Bamon both are built up on Bonnie depending on them when she had nobody else. It gave her room to see the good in them from her side of things. Makes her very dependent on somebody else. It filled up her abandonment issues. Which is never properly addressed in canon & she definitely has issues with her parents. The feuds for both ships is funny sometimes bc well…Enzo/Damon both started their relationships with her that way.
Elena reminds Bonnie of life pre-supernatural world. The life that was safe and normal. Bonnie spent most of her time with Elena and had her to lean on for anything. We don’t get enough of Bonnie’s emotions but we can tell Bonnie sees Elena/her orbit (and then everyone else as family) vice versa. Back to the point BE seemed to do just about everything together naturally. Cheerleading, sleepovers etc.. Bonlena also play into that Petrova x Bennett line repeated circle—which i think can have negative tones but pen in that lmao. The writing stopped aiding in Elena caring about her friends when she certainly did at first and thus Bonlena fell out without actually falling out heavily. But this does build an argument for Bonnie being okay, if Elena left her alone. With Bonnie having feelings in her own friendships and those feelings being loud.
Caroline plays into this because she slowly becomes the friend Bonnie needs without it being given too much focus. Baroline isn’t necessarily about life or death and has plenty of more non-serious moments. Keeping tvd’s weird “we’ll talk about Bonnie’s relationships without giving it focus” Caroline does defend Bonnie here or there. doing things like: begging Abby to stay or telling Elena, Bonnie suffers because of her. killing witches. Having Caroline admit when she’s selfish. stealing from Elena there with her happier bonding moments with Bonnie. Both Caroline and Elena have their moments just like the rest of the gang with Bonnie. Where Elena lacked, Caroline filled up the spaces that Elena had with others.
During Elena’s no humanity arc she didn’t act like Bonnie’s friend. Or anyone’s really. I think it’s something to be said here. That Bonnie is actually reflecting her choices in what Elena said to her. I know people think Elena attempting to kill Bonnie was the last straw or should’ve been. I think this should’ve been the moment the wheels started turning in Bonnie’s head. Plus Elena’s attempt. If Bonnie was allowed to be mad and stay that was after Elena bit her then it wouldn’t have been much Elena could’ve done with that. But fight for forgiveness. Humanity-back on/Human Elena would have a bigger time struggling without Bonnie’s presence than Bonnie would’ve had without Elena. Both Bonnie and Elena have lost a lot yes. But Bonnie is known for that independence and Elena isn’t.
Neither Rudy or Abby ever apologized (well)for how they treated Bonnie and while an apology from somebody would’ve been seasons late. It equally could’ve been nice coming from Elena during season 5-6. Bonnie still NEEDED family or support from them. Which she never actually has outside the vortex of the MFG. Yet has no feelings or ill thoughts to her family.

My god Plec is such an awful person. Not only did she sneakily end Klonnie (which btw i dont ship either but I can admit that making KC happen when all the fuss was about Klonnie is messed up). And then she copied Kennett fans. Im sure it was Kennett fans who took the “I hold witches in high regard” line and ran with it. Creating fanfiction and head canons. And Bonnie’s ancestor had a connection with the Mikaelsons and then they had to make sure Davina’s ancestor had a connection with Kol. No originality. Just copying everything Bonnie fans want and then giving those storylines to white girls. I remember Kennett fans wanting to see Kol’s witch side explored with Bonnie but it was explored with Davina instead. We wanted to see Bonnie and the Gemini coven have a storyline, but somehow Caroline becomes the center of the Gemini lore.
Plec has made it clear she doesn’t see value in Bonnie unless she is serving the white characters. Her brain short-circuits at the thought of Bonnie being a valued human being with agency, hobbies, her own life, desires and power in a relationship with a popular character who isn’t a damsel.
You're absolutely right. She liked the concept of Kennett. She just hated that the witch in the ship was Black.
Actually, I think we should generalize that statement more. Julie Plec like the concept of Bonnie - a powerful, teenage witch from a powerful witch bloodline, who has to save the world and fight against powerful evil. She repeats this in The Originals with Davina. And she likes it so much that she gives us not one, but three "Bonnies" in Legacies with Hope (the hero who saves everyone), Josie (the self-sacrificing one who puts everyone else's happiness before her own, at least in theory because in the end Josie is still white) and Lizzie (who's like witch!Caroline).
She just didn't like that Bonnie and the Bennetts were Black.

for the character ask:
1. i do not know which dare me girl is your fave so you pick: beth or addy (you can do just show or just book or both, your choice! you can also do both of them lol)
2. Bonnie Bennett from TVD
3. Evie O’Neill from the Diviners!
send me a character name and i’ll tell you three things i have in common with them and three things i don’tI flip flopped between Dare Me girls but Addy is easier to answer this for so I’ll go with her Addy Hanlon three things I have in common with them
repression djfjfjf
ambitious but also kind of people pleaser at the same time
lesbian of color (based on the show casting)
three things I don’t
was never a cheerleader (I did gymnastics at one point but not competitively and not cheerleading at all)
I wasn’t as impressionable as she can be even as a teen… or I like to think so anyway lol
in the show she has a brother I’ve forgotten if he was in the book? I don’t have siblings
Bonnie Bennett three things I have in common with them
very strong close connection with my grandmother who has passed away, very… not strong connection with my dad
abandonment issues ajdjdd
tendency to compartmentalize complaints and deal with issues myself when I don’t expect support from those around me
three things I don’t
counterpart to #3 on top I think Bonnie is allowed to be good at setting boundaries with family members but not with her friends and I think I have the exact opposite problem
I’m (sadly) not a witch
was not voted prom queen lol
Evie O’Neill
three things I have in common with them
I’m from the Midwest and I currently live in NY

self deprecating humor at times

there's a meta to be had about how delena began romantic feelings during their stark power imbalance when she was just a human girl he could physically control (and did often when stefan didn't/couldn't intervene). Elena didn't try to be with him romantically until both her physical (human) and mental (sire bond) weakness were fixed, sure, but the very beginnings are still rooted in that
vs
bamon, which only had a few episodes where Bonnie could not only overpower him physically with her magic. Not only can she, but she DOES so, multiple times, once almost murdering him. she barely considers him an ally until they're trapped in the prison world together, 4?ish? years after they've met. they wouldn't begin to have anything remotely on the grounds of what could eventually be romantic until over 6+yrs later
like, don't get me wrong, damon is a flawed character in every sense and has done horrible things to both of these girls' friends and families. disregarding even that, bonnie is always mistreated and used repeatedly to save the white vampires. im not saying *either* of these is healthy even by tvd standards. it's just a shame that Plec/Dries+co could let Stefan evolve into the mature post highschool non-Elena choice and not consider letting Bonnie have the second lead love interest as well (since we didn't get baroline)

Can't even send hate without hiding, huh?
I have been writing Bonnie Bennett for well over a decade now. Since the first episode. I have fic upon fic (and a very popular Bonnie centric blog) under my belt.
Bonnie Bennett is multi-faceted character, full of a whole range of emotions, sometimes very conflicting. She is not black and white, good or bad. She is a messy grey.
Add to that, sometimes you are just attracted to people that you shouldn't be. Henrik was a witch who died a horrific death, was resurrected, only to lose his magic again when he was turned into a vampire. There is something about that that Bonnie can't help but feel for.
Let's also talk about how you probably didn't even bother to read the threads I have with lycanslain because you would see that it is very much enemies to lovers vibe, which is something that is a TVD staple. If Elena can come to love Damon, and Caroline can come to care for Klaus, than Bonnie can do her thing with Henrik. In fact the TVD fandom has a long history of acting like Bonnie is too pure for a bad boy which is thinly veiled in racist tropes (if you want to read more I'll gladly send you lots of meta from my BB blog).
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk and in conclusion, don't ever come for my Bonnie Bennett fan card. You'll have to wrestle it from my cold dead hands.
PS: This is fandom rp, anything goes as long as you're having fun.

Bonnie, The Bennett’s, Black Witches and The Magical Negro Trope & Mammy Trope - TVD META
Tumblr media
Bonnie and the Bennett’s have very rich lore. It’s not glorified by the fandom unless it’s by Bonnie fans themselves. That’s the way it’s always been, no one paying any mind or deeper thought to Bonnie/and the Bennett’s outside of her fans. This isn't a new thing but I want to highlight this once again because I don’t think fans understand there is more than one negative trope rooted in Bonnie, the Bennett’s and black witches only.
Before we get into anything heavy let’s have some key-terms here: Let’s define a magical negro trope: where a black character appears in a plot solely to help a white character and then vanishes. Now what a mammy is: a black woman engaged to take care of white children or as a servant to a white family.
Everything in the series can be tied back to a Bennett witch. Let’s list a few things the immortality spell, immortals, the other side, the cure, supernatural hunters, creating rings to preserve life, the Gilbert device but only a Bennett witch can enchant it, prison worlds, the traveler's curse, vampires, hybrids etc…You name it without the Bennett’s creation there would be nothing. You would think because of this the Bennett’s would be respected in the narrative and by fans. Wrong. Some of these women aren’t even given actual names. Everyone can have a Bennett witch at their disposal but they won’t be respected either. Bennett blood is essential to certain spells. A loophole.
Tumblr media
Let’s talk about Ayana. The Mikaelson’s were only able to become vampires because Esther stole Ayana’s spell. It is forgotten that Esther/Mikael begged Ayana to perform the spell first. The Mikaelson’s as humans trusted Ayana. Rebekah was in shock that a necklace from Ayana burned her. While Ayana remained unnamed this time while the story was told. Rebekah was talking about Ayana. Ayana was known as a healer and given Esther’s praises they were close. The series doesn’t show us why Ayana should value the Mikaelson’s but we do understand why Esther, her husband and children valued her. That infamous necklace that Rebekah loved belonged to Ayana. We don’t know about Ayana’s life outside of being a healer. We don’t know her marital status, how many children she could’ve possibly had and anything tied to her after the plot has used her up. One would think with how close Ayana was to the Mikaelson’s, they’d have some respect or acknowledge Bonnie but that never happens.

We see this in how Emily was enslaved to Katherine. Julie may have labeled Emily a handmaiden but we knew what that meant. Emily only had one request from Damon that he watch and protect the Bennett line which he never did. The black witches never ask much of anyone in the plot or ever given the chance too. Yet when a request is made no one ever meets said request for them. This form of slavery repeats again through Lucy. She claimed Katherine saved her life therefore she is indebted to her for however long she needs. Sheila has her hand in aiding the Gemini Coven, Beatrice helped with the Sirens.

There are other witches that are black who serve a purpose to aid in many and leave such as: Gloria, The Martin’s, Bree, Aja and her coven just to name a few. Friends of the main characters or enemies but quickly there and dropped. Originally due to all witches appearing Black fans believed they were all Bennett’s. Julie has no answer for why all witches that is until they weren’t. Remember witches were servants of nature. The Mikaelson’s popularity, Gemini Coven and other witches. Fills the space that Black witches were once in. Notice a pattern here?

Qetsiyah’s plot line should’ve centered on how she created immortality, the cure, and the other side. But Qetsiyah’s existence revolves around demanding and enforcing continuous revenge on Silas and Amara. Tying her into another repeated love triangle in the franchise. May I add that she and Bonnie are the only women to have been betrayed by a partner and criticized for their reactions. There’s nothing wrong when a man wants and craves power but Qetsiyah is considered the worst of them all. Here’s an amazing video that details Qetsiyah’s writing too. Please review.

Lastly, The Bonnie of it all:
Bonnie’s a loyal, powerful and brave woman. She doesn’t let anything happen to her friends if she can stop it. She cares for them. That kind of loyalty can be beautiful but equally harmful when Bonnie has no regard to her own feelings. She continues to give for everyone and her friends rarely return the favor. Bonnie’s never thanked or rewarded for being there. The friendships stop being equal very early. Her traumas aren’t valuable in the plot. We don’t know what Bonnie’s home looked like. If Bonnie does grieve it isn’t shown on screen. Her family life is limited, while Liz and Alaric aren’t main characters. They have their own plotlines. It is revealed that Abby’s reasonings for abandoning her is for Elena’s benefit. Abby is killed in a coin toss and transitioned. Caroline gets to have a good friend moment while Bonnie isn’t have any feelings towards her mother for abandoning her after. Rudy isn’t seen in the plot longterm and when he appears in season 5 he’s killed in front of Bonnie. She grieves this in silence while grieving her own death that she didn’t make aware to her friends to avoid inconveniencing them. The plot makes it clear if the white counterparts aren’t happy then Bonnie will never either. Elena, Caroline got happier endings while Bonnie’s job was completed. Bonnie never once got to call out how her friends can disregard her, she feeds into them and they grow while sucking the life out of her. In the end, Bonnie went back to Africa. Never any reference to her life from there.
Another thing Bonnie isn’t shown to be feminine. Her best friends go on dates, go to dances, dress up and receive compliments. Caroline or Elena has ever given Bonnie a compliment that aided in her beauty. We don’t know Bonnie’s ambitions or fears. But you are aware when Bonnie wants to save her best friend. Thoughts on Bonnie’s relationships and ships is for the next meta though.
White witches did follow the servitude of others. They were still given the privilege of agency that black witches were never going to have. Witches like Dahlia existed, and although she had one goal she had more personality than others.

When you have people like the TVD writers that continue to push harmful stereotypes there’s always going to fans who listen and continue to perpetuate those stereotypes. The writers had no value for Black women nor do the fans. They don’t care about how black women or people of color are treated in fiction or the media simply because their favorites get to reap all the benefits. That tweet is just one tip of the iceberg, there’s plenty more from Bonnie’s relationships, and storylines.

I loved your answer about the Bennetts and it makes me curious how you feel about how the originals show handles/barley mentions them
Honestly relieved.
Let's be honest, The Originals didn't handle POC characters any better than TVD did. So I know they would have handled it just as poorly. Don't even get me started on how the show treated Marcel and Vincent or any of the many women of color they killed off for the plot.
Now in reality (if the show was real), the Bennetts would have been all over New Orleans. The show really said the Bennetts were in the Americas before Europe had even invaded and then pretended that the Bennetts didn't have ties to nearly every coven in North America. We know they were focused in Salem until they were run out and found their way to Mystic Falls. But we also know they are often not found together and we see them in so many cities, so it would make sense that they would have ties to most of the covens. Especially in a city like New Orleans that is flooded with magic. The Bennetts would have found their way there at some point.
The Mikaelsons also have a long history with the Bennetts so even if the the Bennetts hadn't already been in New Orleans, I would think the Mikaelsons would have dragged them into their drama at some point. Now I could see the Bennett witches fleeing the city as soon as the Mikaelsons landed knowing they only bring pain to witches. But if the Bennetts had been there, they likely would have prevented the Mikaelsons from settling.
There were so many times throughout The Originals that they were stumped and the audience was yelling at the characters because Bonnie already solved these problems in TVD. Now I don't compare witch powers because the show is so inconsistent with power level that I don't think it's possible, but Bonnie was a powerful witch who would have been incredibly useful. A witch whom the Mikaelsons were all very aware of.
A couple of moments where I was expecting Bonnie to get dragged in or at least mentioned:
When Hope was sent with Rebekah. They said she was cloaked by a witch but the Mikaelsons didn't have a witch in the family yet. Who would they have trusted to do it? Who would be powerful enough to make the New Orleans coven/Esther unable to track her? I could see Klaus calling Bonnie up with all kinds of threats to cloak Hope.
When Freya was in the chambre and Hayley was trying to bring them back. She mentions she had a witch but doesn't name one. This would have been an easy moment to mention the Bennetts. After all, Hayley knows Bonnie and could have tried to plead with her to help. She could have at least started there.
The most ridiculous moment is at the end when they die to kill the Hollow, like Bonnie hasn't been creating worlds to trap souls in for years. Bonnie and Freya would have been a cool team-up moment at the end to save the day.
I do think it would be hard to explain why Bonnie was willing to help them at any point, but that goes for any witch. None of them wanted to help the Mikaelsons but did so for various reasons.
TVD created this long history of Bennett witches that constantly interacted with the Original family and yet were not mentioned once throughout their show. It just made no sense.
I don't ship Bonnie with any of the Mikaelsons for many reasons but I think it would have been such a good story to see her come to New Orleans and interact with Marcel, Davina, Vincent, etc. I think they would have welcomed her in as a fellow Mikaelson-anti and I really wanted to see Bonnie with more witch friends. They could have taught each other so much.
But personally, I wanted Bonnie and Enzo to leave the MFG behind and start their own life. I could see Bonnie bringing her distant relatives together and finally creating a home for the Bennett coven. She deserved that way more than continuing to get tied up in the vampire drama.
Thanks for asking! Bonnie is one of my favorite TVD characters and I don't talk about her nearly enough.

Klaus and Bonnie both have the habit of solving things themselves and not relying on others (because they usually get the job done). Though Klaus usually does it out of crippling paranoia and getting power while Bonnie saves those she cares for and being the only one that can.
