Bumpkin or Boomkin
A boomkin/bumpkin was a strong, usually wooden spar introduced in 1710, extending forward across the bow of a sailing vessel and holding a block through which the foresail's jib was passed; in some modern sailing yachts with long mainbooms, it is a short spar extending aft from the stern and anchoring a central backstay.

Outside of a nautical context, it refers to an awkward, simple rustic or yokel. The Dutch word boomken, which means “little tree,” may bridge the gap between the two meanings as it appears to have been used to refer to a short stumpy man.
