Lewis’ debut novel is a thrilling must-read that is entertaining to no end!

“Thieves’ Gambit” follows 17-year-old Rossalyn Quest, a master thief  who plans to run away from her notorious family to leave behind her life of crime. Things take an unexpected turn, however, when her last job goes sideways, leaving her mother’s life in the balance. In a desperate bid to save her, Ross enters the Thieves’ Gambit, a legendary, yet dangerous competition in which the world’s top teen thieves go head to head for the ultimate prize—a granted wish for anything in the world. 

There are no dull moments in this book! Lewis’ high stakes, fast-paced storyline made it impossible for me to put it down. I was endlessly entertained and engaged by the series of heists Ross had to complete in the tournament, the cinematic feel of Lewis’ writing, and the backstabbing, lying, and cheating amongst competitors amidst the chaos.

As much as I loved the novel’s plot, I loved Rossalyn Quest as a protagonist even more! Caught between her dream of a normal life and staying loyal to her family of thieves, Ross’ internal conflict is complex and relatable. Her fierce love for her mother is admirable and I found myself rooting for her to win the wish the entire time! The only thing standing in her way is her struggle to trust others. This layer of intrigue only deepens when her fellow competitor Devroe Kenzie begins to break through her walls with his charm and persistence. I adored their partnership and couldn’t help but audibly scream when it turned into something more. 

“Thieves’ Gambit” is full of love and betrayal and I could not get enough despite the ending absolutely destroying me. I need book two immediately and hope that Lionsgate Studios moves forward with the development of Lewis’ debut so that I can see it on the big screen!

Thieve's Gambit

Can there be honor among thieves? Rosalyn Quest may have been brought up in one of the legendary thieving families, but she's been sheltered and never made friends. She lives by the rule; never trust anyone who's last name isn't Quest.

When a job goes bad, her attempt to get out of the thieving life and try to be "normal" for awhile is sent off course. Now she needs to find a way to come up with a billion dollars and rescue her mom. Her only option is the strange email waiting in her family's black box email account. Sent by The Organizers, asking her to join this year's Gambit.

When she arrives, her only acquaintance is Noelia Boschert - the girl who betrayed her and ran the lesson home about trusting no one when they were both only 9. She quickly learns that out of the 12 teens invited, she might be the only one who hasn't heard of The Organizers or the Gambit. She doesn't plan to be out of the loop for long though.

Each contestant must make their way through three phases in order to be the winner. From the outset, Devroe tries to join up with Ross, offering to team up with her in the museum. Despite turning down his offer and being determined to work alone, he saves her later in the night. Then The Organizers are separating them into two teams, and Ross is questioning everything she's ever known.

Can she really trust her teammates? Can she save her mom without them? And when push comes to shove, can she win the Gambit her way?

Why was Betsy Faria’s husband, Russ, found guilty of her murder?Īs The Thing About Pam points out, local law enforcement believed Betsy’s murder was an open-and-shut case: the husband did it. Pam Hupp was the last person to see her alive. “Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!” Betsy said excitedly on the voicemail message. the two called Pam’s husband, Mark Hupp, to check in. When she dropped Betsy off at home at approximately 7 p.m. After her chemo session, though, Betsy texted to let him know that Hupp would be taking her home that night instead. The night Betsy died, Russ had originally planned to pick up his wife from her mother’s house following his weekly Tuesday game night. However, the police reported that Betsy had been stabbed 55 times and her wounds were not self-inflicted. When her husband Russell “Russ” Faria found her on the floor he believed his terminally ill wife, whose breast cancer had metastasized to her liver, had taken her own life. Two days after Christmas, Faria was stabbed to death in her Troy, Missouri, home. 22, 2011, Faria named Hupp the sole beneficiary of her $150,000 life insurance policy. Louis Magazine that Faria had “been worrying about her two teenage daughters’ spending the money foolishly, and she was afraid that her husband, too, would ‘piss it away.’” On Dec. Hupp soon became a trusted confidante and advisor to Faria, who worried that her daughters would not be financially taken care of after her death. The former coworkers lost touch for years, but when Faria was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010, Hupp swooped in to help, often driving Faria to her chemotherapy treatments. Faria, who was 11 years Hupp’s junior, was known for being sweet and bubbly, with a reputation for being scatterbrained and often short on cash. Hupp met Betsy Faria in 2001 when they both worked at the State Farm office. How did Pam Hupp and Betsy Faria become friends? While it is unclear who mailed the letter, Pam had previously been fired twice for forging signatures-a detail she didn’t disclose on her State Farm job application. Boschert claims he never sent the note, which was written on his official stationary. “It was like she was just letting it dribble out, and then it was ‘I can’t say anything.’”īoschert said that there was an incident in which a customer called saying they had received a signed letter from him with information that only he, Hupp, and another employee were privy to. “She always told me she was involved somewhere like the FBI, something with security clearance, kind of in the past but maybe still,” he said. And she was very adept at office politics.” But he also said that there were some “weird things” that happened during her tenure at the company. Louis Magazine in 2017 described her as “a positive person, very level-headed-I never saw her mad. Hupp’s former State Farm manager Mike Boschert told St. After a short stint in Florida, she moved back to Missouri in 2001 and took a clerical job at State Farm while also flipping houses on the side with her husband. Six years later, Hupp got divorced and shortly thereafter married Mark Hupp, a minor league baseball player turned carpenter. By the end of her senior year, she had gotten pregnant and then married, a turn in her life that, according to friends who spoke to the magazine, made her resentful of those who went on to college. The third of four children, Hupp was described by friends as a “boy crazy” cheerleader with a big personality and an even bigger laugh, according to St. Hupp (née Neumann) was born in Dellwood, Missouri, in 1958 to a strict Catholic family.

Notes on The Timberline.

Tonight, we’re taking a look at The Timberline. They are an alternative/pop-punk bands coming to us from Fort Collins, CO. Members include Terran Hause (Guitar/Piano/Vocals); Aaron Crownover  (Bass); Mike Boschert (Guitar/Vocals) and Clint Petrun (Drums/Percussion). They recently released their full length album, Faulty Wires. Take a few and learn a little bit more about them.

NON: How did you all meet?

TT: Some of us have known each for years from playing in other bands together, but we met Mike (guitar/back up vox) in February of 2018 because we were searching for a second guitarist and found him looking for a band home.

NON: What is the story behind your name?

TT: It has a slightly different meaning to all of us, but it felt like the right fit after considering and rejecting 100s of other names. On the surface, the name has local significance as a major road in Fort Collins and other local organizations use the word "Timberline." For deeper meaning, the timberline on a mountain is an altitude above where no trees grow due to an insufficient supply of oxygen. This juxtaposition thriving or being deprived of something vital tends to be a reoccurring theme in our music. NON: Who are some of your influences (as a band/individually)?

TT: Both individually and collectively, we have similar influences. Although we might all rank them in a different order on preference, we all draw influence from:Blink 182, Taking Back Sunday, Angels and Airwaves, Brand New, Tickle Me Pink, Say Anything, Yellowcard, Neck Deep, etc.

NON: Who or what inspires you to make music?

TT: We write/perform music because we love doing it and that's what keeps the train moving. Terran writes the majority of the lyrics and does so as an outlet. Our new full-length album "Faulty Wires" mostly captures the feelings and emotions Terran experienced while in law school at UCLA (and a semester abroad in Hamburg, Germany). The album explores themes such as human connection, the breakdown of relationships, indecisiveness, and how technology promises connection yet can lead to further isolation. NON: Do you have any nerves before a show? 

TT: If so, how do you handle/channel that energy?If we do, it's more a fun and excited energy than anything crippling. Terran never expected to play these songs live, so he periodically deals with stage fright; however, he's becoming more comfortable with live performances. On the day of a show, we like to get in the zone by rerunning rounds of Jeopardy where we compete against one another to display our trivia dominance. We also binge watch and quote the The Office.

NON: What has been your favorite show to date?

TT: Our favorite show to date was our CD release party at the Aggie Theatre, but honorable mentions to the Larimer County Fair and Taste of Fort Collins. FoCoMX--a weekend festival in Fort Collins, Colorado--is always a good time as well. This festival showcases local artists, so we always enjoy attending and finding new music. NON: You recently released your first full length album, can you describe the writing process for us a bit?

TT: It was a complicated writing process. Most of the album was written while our lead singer lived in Los Angeles, so each song developed differently. While some of the songs started with lyrics and music was built around the words, other songs were the complete opposite. Since we were not all in one place and couldn't practice, we used logic to share ideas and drafts. Terran eventually rented a studio space on Hollywood Boulevard to finish recording the demo tracks. Surely his neighbors were happy about that. Also, the addition of Mike really helped shape this album. Mike had written numerous songs and many of his song structures and riffs were used or adapted for this album. After Terran and Mike completed a first rough draft, Clint wrote and recorded drum parts for each song. To combine everyone's ideas and parts, many drafts were recorded and sent across the country several times. This made the writing process substantially longer, so we hope everyone enjoys the fruits of our labor! NON: Where do you see yourself in five years?

TT: Our goal is to grow as musicians and continue writing music we are proud to share. It would be incredible to eventually turn this into a career, but ideally we'll have another album out and maybe a few tours under our belt. We are definitely excited to see where we end up in 5 years!

Shout outs:Tyler Lindgren for recording and producing our debut album in our drummer's (Clint Petrun) basement. Tyler is an incredible musician, friend, and put up with all of our meticulous edits and last minute changes. Clint's wife, Winter Petrun, for enduring all the band practices and late night recording sessions - not to mention running the merch table at shows. All of our family and friends for being so supportive of this project. And anybody who has gone to a show of ours, followed our band on socials, or bought merch. All of that is awesome for any band, big or small.
