Bouc. Mon ami, mon amour Bouc.
Tumblr media
Good heavens do I love this man. Just look at him. Look at this sweetheart of a man. Look at that smile. And to be clear, I am not lusting after this fictional man the way I do for other fictional men. In this case, I just desperately want to be his friend. I want to experience his kindness and his wit firsthand, the open arms with which he greets all of his companions.
And luckily, I have a friend that reminds me of Bouc a lot. An honestly scary amount. He is such a sweet man, and an incredible friend. All of my love to the Boucs of the world.

Since Tom Bateman expressed he’d be open to be in another Poirot film with Ken (despite the obvious incident on the Nile steamer), if he is brought back for a prequel or alternatively if Bouc had a more gracious fate, how would’ve you liked to have seen Bouc’s story and his dynamic as Poirot’s assistant continue in either A Haunting in Venice or a potential other adaptation?
I liiivvvveeee just briefly enough to post this. I apologize for the massive delay but this semester. Oh boy it and life in general have hit me like eight trucks in a row and then a train. ANYWAY I am here with Thoughts about this.
I personally would love to see a prequel where Poirot and Bouc meet because I have an idea of Bouc being this wild young lad who lands himself in trouble again and again (accidentally and sometimes, for the pure angst, on purpose because he is a Tortured Young Lad) and Poirot finding ways to let him off the hook. I’d love to see Bouc become mixed up in a case by accident and Poirot working to help this poor young lad off the hook and Bouc admiring and respecting him but ultimately not caring about Poirot’s fame with cases because he just likes this funny little man who sees past his apathetic, wild front to the soul underneath. I might have to write this.
more under the cut (spoilers for death on the Nile and a haunting in Venice)
As far as Bouc in A Haunting in Venice (which I just saw again tonight and remains as perplexing as the first time I saw it), if Bouc lives past DotN then someone else needs to die in his place for the final push of the story. So if not Bouc, then it needs to be someone close to Bouc to give Poirot the same kind of obligation to solve the murders and guilt about not having solved it sooner. Along with this, to preserve the storyline of AHiV, Poirot needs to have been secluded for a few years, which means there needs to have been some need for him and Bouc to not see each other. I see three options: Euphemia, Salome, or Rosalie.
Euphemia:
Bouc would be absolutely and understandably distraught by his mother being murdered, maybe enough to push Poirot away and say some hurtful things, but ultimately, I don’t see this option working as well. There’s probably the equal chance that Bouc would turn to Poirot in his grief, and as awful as it sounds, there would be the upside of her death that Bouc and Rosalie would have some money to marry.
Salome:
If Salome died, Rosalie would never forgive Poirot. That alone might be enough for Bouc to leave Poirot alone for a few years since his love for Rosalie is strong, but again, I don’t see it working as well. Unfortunately, the best option would be:
Rosalie:
This would destroy Bouc. I think if Rosalie died it would make Bouc understand that death seems to follow Poirot around like a curse (a theme in AHiV), and after the events of the movie they would part ways without the expectation of seeing the other again. I think the guilt of Rosalie dying would work to send Poirot into seclusion (guilt from not being able to save his best friend’s love, guilt from not being able to save his own potential love interest’s niece-who-is-basically-her-child, guilt from not being able to save the brilliant woman that Rosalie was), and Bouc wouldn’t want to see Poirot again for a while. So let’s go with that option to proceed. This is how I see AHiV playing out:
After Rosalie’s death in DotN, Poirot retires to Venice and stops being a detective. The story proceeds as it does in the film, with the change of Bouc being invited to the seance. Maybe he had some kind of connection to the family, either by relation or friendship. He and Poirot are shocked to see the other there, and they exchange formal pleasantries but their interactions are tense and awkward. Bouc is a bit amused about Poirot revealing the seance lady to be a fake.
After Poirot’s attempted drowning during the apple bobbing, Bouc is the one who finds him. He is concerned and protective over Poirot, showing a hint of the loyal Bouc we saw in the other movies. His friendliness to Poirot vanishes when Joyce Reynolds is found dead and Poirot locks everyone in. Bouc is angry and afraid about being stuck in yet another murder mystery situation and probably takes it out in a rant against Poirot. He probably says something about how everyone around Poirot ends up dead. He’s the only one excluded from suspects because he was actively with Poirot at the time of the murder, but he refuses to help Poirot. Poirot asks Mrs. Oliver instead. The movie proceeds.
Bouc notices Poirot’s drug-induced nerves and stuff and tries to ignore it, but he is unable to stay apathetic the whole time and eventually shows his concern for Poirot. They are on friendlier terms by the time it’s revealed that Mrs Oliver and George (was that his name I really do not know I saw this movie not 2 hrs ago) were working together, at which point Bouc’s loyalty kicks in hardcore and he probably goes off on Mrs. Oliver and George. Mrs Oliver probably gets in a few good jabs at Bouc about him being just as bad of a friend as she is since Bouc abandoned Poirot to deteriorate into a state of only existing. The doctor is found dead and everyone leave Poirot to solve it. Old Bouc is reawakened by this point, and after Mrs Oliver leads everyone away and gives her jab about Poirot needing to admit he’s up against something bigger than just facts, Bouc asks Poirot what the next move is. Maybe he says something that sparks a connection of some aspect of the crime in Poirot’s mind.
At the end of the movie, Poirot tells Bouc that he was right: everyone around Poirot does end up dead. He apologizes for being unable to save Rosalie and tells Bouc that Rosalie’s death has haunted him more than any death. Bouc forgives Poirot and says he was wrong: Poirot doesn’t cause death wherever he goes. People will die anyway, and people will kill anyway; Poirot finds himself put in situations where people die because it’s his God given duty to right the wrongs and bring justice about, because he is the only one smart enough to do so. Or something like that but more eloquently worded. They hug. Bouc says he will visit Poirot. Poirot goes home and becomes a detective again. I might have to write this.

My fave part of Death on the Nile (movie) is that Poirot didn't actually need to ask Bouc about Rosalie, because he already knew they were in a relationship and only needed to know about Rosalie's life, but Poirot just wanted a chance to ask his friend about his romantic life, let Bouc gush a bit about her, and tell Bouc how happy he was for them. And the way Poirot decided to bring it up was tell Bouc he's too much of a manwhore to not notice Rosalie.
