If Kishimoto has no idea of love, I'm not surprised that he left the NH and SS as canon. Saying that love is complicated explains his ignorance in that regard, but it still doesn't explain how he developed Narusaku in a good way, because Narusaku is the proof that love is not complicated. That relationship was the most natural and healthy, everything flowed well even if it's not canon. Kishimoto is pure contradiction.
I know, right? He contradicts himself at every step of the way.
That’s why I say that this was a move on his part to hide the real reason: that he did this because he was commanded to by the higher ups at SJ/SP who thought that going with NH/SS will bring the franchise big bucks.
When in reality LOL, look where we’re at now. Boruto is not making even half of what the OG did.
It’s barely alive.
They thought that if they listen to the apparent “majority” of the internet, that’s a success. BUT NOPE!
The reality of the fact is that the internet is an outlet for people to venture their stuff. Now, experience in work has taught me that the complainers will be loud they’ll always be the ones who have something to complain about (why isnt Hinata in team 7, why isn’t she Naruto’s love interest, yadda yadda).
It’s usually the negative outlet that it’s poured out more on the internet, rather than the positive one. Thus, this gives you the impression that the negative ones are the majority.
It’s like a false positive test, for example. In our case, a false positive reception to Hinata’s character, for example. And thus it gives the impression that the loud minority = the silent majority.
A situation like this made the higher ups at SJ and SP think that well Hinata is the preferred one so okay, let’s make NH canon and let’s make HER the heroine.
People like to dismiss NS but then why the need to replace Hinata with Sakura? If we think about it, the general consensus was that we would’ve had the Hero x Heroine pairing. The only issue here was that from the false positive reception, they understood that the one who should be there should be Hinata, not Sakura.
Thus they made the change. And this way they thought that they satisfied their consumer base.
Only that SURPRISE! IT FLIP FLOPPED!
Now, idk who was in the marketing/branding/sales department of SP/SJ but rule  no. 1 is that people with positive experience are LESS LIKELY to leave a review.
They show their support differently. The way it matters. They just enjoy your product, show their support in real ways that matter to your business, rather than comments on the internet/reviews.
In our case aka people were buying manga and that was that. No big fuss about it, no nothing. Manga sales were going good, anime viewership as well, other media products such as figurines as well. All was good.
So good that it allowed the franchise to have 1 movie / year.
And theen the end happened.
Think a bit about it in perspective. Of course, being the end there was a lot of fuss around it: people bought the tickets pre sale (who weren’t allowed then to ask their money back), the novels as well because they thought it should answer some of the unanswered questions and whatnot.
And then, here came Boruto. For nostalgia reasons, it held it’s ground for a bit.
But then, it dropped. It’s best results are 183,413 copies peak.
The series has one million copies in print as of January 2017. Between 2017 and 2018, it became the 8th best-selling manga from Shueisha.
But then put things in perspective with Naruto:
2008  -  4,261,054 total sales
2009 -  6,836,494 total sales
2010 -  7,409,068 total sales
2011 -  6,874,840 total sales
2012 -  6,495,240 total sales
2013 -  5,553,933 total sales
2014 - 5,505,179 total sales
2015 - 3,498,177 total sales
In total, Naruto sold 250 million copies on a span of 15  years.
How did Boruto do? In a span of 5 years, it barely sold ONE million. And if you add on the sales over the years and make an average adding the 12 volumes in circulation already, you should have an average of 5 millions.
Yet it has just one...
So I think the reception here is pretty clear.
Thus let’s get to my second point.
RULE NO. 2 YOU GOTTA BE COHERENT as a brand.
What Naruto did at its end with NaruSaku NOT canon, changing the heroines and all that jazz we know screamed DECOHERENCE from the heavens.
What the brand did is show disrespect to its audience. Which one? THE SILENT MAJORITY.
A brand is an emotional connection between its audience and the brand itself.
And no matter how these kiddies nowadays like to discredit it, people were invested in Naruto’s emotional journey the most.
Naruto’s emotional journey was simple: get acknowledgement from the village so he can become Hokage, fight/save his rival, get the love of the girl he wishes for.
Did we get ANY of that? Well, he fought and saved his rival indeed, but then the Naruto becoming Hokage stuff was treated poorly while the same happened with the love of the girl he wished for.
So 2/3 experiences are bad. How did the audience respond to that? Well, you can find the response in the sales of Boruto, as simple as that.
And that’s what happens when you treat your audience like crap. Because you know what? People might excuse some mistakes you do (like the horrible war arc), but NOT staying true to yourself is one of the things they’ll never forgeet you for.
And that’s what happened with Naruto as a brand and character: it didn’t stay true to itself/himself.
So people just left.
As simple as that.
That’s why at the end of the day, no matter how much some that are still in the fandom try to downplay it, the reality of the facts is this... by comparison, you can very well see it as a flop.
Of course, it benefits from the fact that anime is put in a runtime that has no competition while the manga in V jump which is kinda the same.
But oh well, talk about Karma, I guess...  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Chapter 1: Let's Go, I Guess?
I was sitting on my couch with my feet propped on the coffee table and a bowl of cereal in my hands. It was a Thursday morning in mid-January, and I was finally home from tour.
My band, Pierce The Veil, had released our fifth album last April. It had been eight years since we’d released an album, so we were taking every opportunity to tour and do interviews. In the last eight months we’d been on four tours and had done thirty or so interviews. Needless to say, it was very nice to be at home.
Misadventures had been a big record, but this album was long-awaited and sold out in minutes of us announcing the preorders. The same went with our tour dates. Fans bought up general admission tickets and VIP packages almost as soon as they went on sale. There were only a handful of shows on each tour that weren’t sold out.
But all of that was over for now. We had a European tour coming in the fall, but nothing was planned for the rest of winter or the spring besides TV appearances and more interviews.
I wasn’t thinking about that though as I scrolled down the home screen of Netflix trying to find something to watch while I ate. I intended on making my time at home for myself. Of course I’d do some writing if inspiration struck, but I just wanted to relax after almost a year of being on the road.
I had finally settled on a show when my phone rang. I quickly pressed play on the show and turned the volume down before I answered the call.
“Hello?”
“Hey you!” A small smile played on my lips at the voice on the other line.
“Hey Danielle.” Danielle was my girlfriend. She and I had officially started dating about eleven months ago and things were going well.
“What’s up?” I asked.
“Not much, just wanted to see how you were doing after tour. And I wanted to let you in on the engagement of the foundation.”
Aside from being my girlfriend, Danielle was also the head of marketing of the Living the Dream Foundation. We’d met in 2019 when I became CEO and I needed to hire some people. She applied for the job and I interviewed her over Zoom because of a global pandemic. Aside from her being beautiful she also had her shit together. I hired her pretty quickly after that interview which eventually led to me following her on Instagram. A couple years went by when we kept it professional, but we couldn’t deny our attraction toward each other. One day we finally admitted we had feelings for one another. One thing led to another and now here we are.
“I’m doing okay; I’m just getting used to being at home. And about the numbers, I was actually about to start eating so maybe email them to me?”
“You’re having a bowl of cereal on the couch, aren’t you?”
I paused my hand from guiding the spoon to my mouth. “No…” How did she know?
She groaned. “If I was in town, I’d take you out for breakfast.”
I smiled. “I’d like that.” I missed Danielle. Even though we hadn’t been official for long, we’d had many close moments since we’d started talking. Then the album dropped and life got crazier so we couldn’t spend as much time together. Now I was home and she was in Redding visiting her mom.
“Or better yet,” she continued, “I’d make you breakfast.” I smirked at the suggestive nature of her idea.
“That’d be even better,” I flirted back. “I’ll take you up on that some time.”
“You’d better. Will I see you when I get back?”
I swallowed the bite of food I had in my mouth before speaking. “Yeah, we’ll plan on it.”
“Great! I’ll let you know when I’m back in town and I’ll make sure to send that email to you.”
“Thanks. Enjoy the rest of your trip.”
“I will. Don’t miss me too much.”
I smiled. “I’ll try not to.”
We said our goodbyes and I focused my attention on eating the rest of my cereal before it got soggy. I turned up the volume of the TV and sat back against the couch, ready to dig in.
I got through most of the bowl when my phone dinged with a new notification. I picked it up and unlocked it to see a new message in the band’s group chat.
The boys and I liked sending memes to each other when we weren’t on tour. Hell, we liked sending memes when we were on tour, but we didn’t do it as often since we were almost always together. Usually whoever sent the first meme was the first one to admit they missed us being together. At that particular moment, that person was Jaime.
I chuckled at the memes he had just sent and scrolled to see some of the ones I’d missed before sending one that I’d saved the night before. I was about to lock my phone and put it back on the table when it rang with a new phone call.
I sighed when I read the name on the caller I.D. It was Dave, our booking agent. If he was calling me it only meant one thing: he had signed us up for some shows.
Don’t get me wrong, I loved touring and performing. It was euphoric, a high that I couldn’t get enough of. But I had only been home for a week and I was finally starting to get used to being back in my own space. Now Dave wanted to tell me that I had to leave my space for however many more months. I was pretty bummed about that.
I put myself in a positive mindset and answered the call before it could go to voicemail. It didn’t really matter if it did; if Dave was calling it meant that it was important, and he’d continue calling until I picked up.
“Hey Dave,” I answered once I’d put my phone on speaker.
“Vic! How are you doing?” he replied with too much enthusiasm for it being this early in the morning.
“I’m great. I’d be better if you told me why you called.” I wanted him to get to the point, even if it was a point I didn’t want to hear.
“Have you had your coffee? It sounds like you need some coffee.” I scowled at the phone. I hadn’t had any coffee yet, but I didn’t like him telling me that I needed coffee.
Maybe I should get coffee…
“I’ll get some after this,” I said. “Anyway, what’s up?” I tried my best to be nicer to Dave. He really was a good person; I just wasn’t ready to hear what he and our management had planned for us.
“Okay, I’ve got five words for you: PTV. Warped Tour. Main stage.”
I groaned loudly. This was what I was afraid of, although I didn’t quite expect Warped Tour.
“What?” Dave asked. “What’s wrong with Warped Tour?”
I sighed. “Nothing, but c’mon, we just got back from tour,” I whined.
“I know, but hey, maybe release an album more than once a decade and you won’t have this problem,” he said with some sass. I opened my mouth to say something then shut it quickly. He had me there.
“Yeah, so, um…,” I stuttered. “What’s the deal?”
“You guys have been offered a spot on main stage this year. It’ll be a great way to start the tour again.”
Warped Tour had ended in 2018, with talks (and hopes) that it would return. The original owner, Kevin Lyman, was feeling very run down and defeated by it all, which was understandable. It bummed out a lot of fans and bands though.
After the last tour in 2018, people just accepted that it wouldn't be back. Then the rumors started that Fronz from Atilla would buy the franchise, but that was controversial in and of itself. However, Lyman didn't trust anyone else to take care of Warped, so it was signed over to Fronz in 2023. Since then there had been small comeback shows in various cities while all of the logistics were getting worked out with the new owner. Warped 2025 was going to be the first full cross-country tour in seven years and apparently we were going to be on the lineup.
"What do you say, Vic?"
I sighed. It wasn't like I had a choice in the matter. Dave and Michele, our manager, had most likely already confirmed us for the spot. Dave was probably just calling to break the news.
"How can I say no?" i said dryly.
"Wonderful! I'll be calling you when more details are up. Until then, go get that coffee. Make it a venti."
I rolled my eyes and mumbled a, "Whatever," before we said goodbye and hung up.
With a frustrated huff I put my now empty bowl of cereal down on the table and picked up my phone. I went into my messages and found my manager's contact.
Did you tell Dave that we'd do Warped Tour? I texted.
She responded quickly. Yes but you told me you'd do it.
I frowned as I went back into the home screen for messages and typed "warped" in the search bar. Sure enough, there was a message to Michele saying that PTV would want to be booked for Warped if it came back cross-country.
I groaned and leaned my head against the couch. I only had myself to blame for this.
Another sigh left my lungs as I opened PTV’s group chat and typed a message to my brothers:
Looks like we’re on Warped. We need to plan a setlist soon
The messages that came in from the guys were similar to the things I’d said to Dave on the phone. We complained, said a few curse words, and eventually started wondering who would be on tour with us that summer.
Meanwhile Dave was calling a band I never thought we’d be close to again.

December 31, 1952 - January 1, 1953 (7:00 p.m. - 7:00 a.m.)
Charles Carr parked the Cadillac in front of the front of the Andrew Johnson Hotel in Knoxville, Tennessee at 7:00 p.m. He went inside and got a room for himself and Hank Williams. All the downtime from waiting for the flight earlier that day gave Hank plenty of time to finish off the bottle of whiskey he had bought from the bootlegger in Fort Payne earlier that day, the effects of which were starting to show.
Carr told the bell captain that he was going to need some special assistance. He had a sick man in his car who would need help getting up to the room. Two porters were sent to assist Hank, who had been drinking on and off all day. They carried him up to the room, later stating that he was obviously intoxicated. One of them, a man named Emmanuel Martin, recalled that Hank was "Very much alive. I talked to him coming in, and I remember he made one little statement, 'When you drink like this, this is the price you gotta pay.'"
The porters laid Hank on the bed. Carr gave them a nice tip and asked them to park the car and take care of the luggage. He then ordered two steak dinners from room service. By the time they arrived, the porters were bringing their luggage into the room. Hank had developed a case of hiccups that seemed to be sending his body into mild convulsions. He only took a few bites of his steak before passing out, eventually rolling off of the bed and falling onto the floor.
His concern for Hank’s health growing, Carr placed a call to Hank’s mother in Montgomery. He explained the situation and asked her what he should do. She got in touch with Hank’s doctor, Toby Marshall, who called Carr and instructed him to have the front desk summon a doctor.
In a short time, Dr. Paul H. Cardwell, a middle aged Knoxville physician, arrived at their room. He noticed some capsules on the nightstand next to Hank’s bed, but didn't ask any questions. Apparently, acting on Marshall's instructions, Cardwell administered two injections: one of vitamin B12 and another of B6, each containing one-quarter grain of Morphine. Cardwell only stayed a few minutes, he declared Hank fit for travel and went on his way. He would later tell investigators that Hank was very drunk and about the capsules on the nightstand, but didn't know what they were or how many he might have taken.
At some point during the three hours and forty-four minutes they spent at the Andrew Johnson Hotel, Charles Carr spoke with promoter A.V. Bamford to let him know what had happened and why they did not make it to the show in Charleston. Bamford told Carr to depart Knoxville immediately for Canton, Ohio to make sure they made it in time for the matinee New Years Day show at 2:00 p.m. Hank’s contract carried a $1,000 default penalty, meaning that he would have to pay that amount of money for every show he missed. More than four thousand tickets had been sold for the show in Canton at $2.50 each. Bamford knew that if Hank failed to show, or showed up drunk, he would have a lawsuit on his hands from the local promoter, LCL Productions.
Around 10:30 p.m., Carr called down to the front desk and asked that the porters come up to the room to help get Hank and their luggage back down to the Cadillac. They returned to the room and picked up Hank, one holding him under his arms and the other holding his legs. They said later that Hank felt limber and that he didn't move. It was difficult for all four men to fit into the elevator and the porters found it necessary to bend Hank's body at the waist. While in this position, as they traveled downward in the elevator, according to the porters later testimony, Hank made a "gurgling sound" as well as a "wheezing or cough-like sound" twice, but that he never spoke or moved at all as they carried him out.
Toby Marshall later testified that he and the assistant manager of the Andrew Johnson Hotel, Dan McCrary, arranged for a relief driver seeing as Carr had been driving since early that morning, but Carr always denied this happened.
Hank was laid in the back seat of his car with his hands draped across his chest in a "V". The porters covered him with a blanket and his navy blue overcoat. Charles Carr drove out Knoxville around 10:45 p.m. headed northeast on Highway 11.
The weather was bad, a mixture of sleet and snow slowed travel to a crawl. An hour later and just twenty miles outside of Knoxville, Carr was passing through Blaine, Tennessee when he attempted to pass a bus. He almost hit a police cruiser head on as he crossed over into the oncoming lane. Driving that police cruiser was Corporal Swan H. Kitts. He hit his lights and made a u-turn, chased the Cadillac down and pulled it over.
Officer Kitts approached the Cadillac and shined his flashlight into the back seat where he could see someone lying down. His uncovered head was on the other side of the car from the drivers side. Kitts would later testify that he saw a lifeless-looking man, pale and blue looking with his collar and hat covering his face, slumped across the backseat, seemingly asleep.
He asked Carr if there was anything wrong with his passenger. Carr replied "No, he's been drinking and the doctor gave him a sedative to make him sleep." Carr seemed unconcerned, as if it were an everyday situation. Kitts wasn't convinced. "He looks like he might be dead," Kitts said to Carr. Carr assured Kitts that he wasn't but Kitts had his doubts.
Carr explained to the Corporal who his passenger was and that he was driving him to an engagement in Ohio and could not afford to be late. Officer Kitts decided not to disturb Hank but had Carr follow him into Rutledge, Tennessee.
At 12:30 a.m. on January 1, 1953, he was written a ticket for reckless driving. He was tried before Justice of the Peace Olin H. Marshall, at his home. Marshall asked Carr how much money he had on him, Carr told him $75.00 and that is what the fine turned out to be. Carr paid the fine and briefly explained the events of that day and evening to the officers. Kitts mentioned the passenger sleeping in the backseat of the car in the presence of Marshall and Sheriff J.N. Antrican, and both of them would recall that Carr seemed nervous, but again requested that Hank not be disturbed.
It was now somewhere around 1 a.m. 1953 had arrived in the midst of this bizarre interlude. Carr got back in the Cadillac and continued on Highway 11, passing through Bristol on the Tennessee-Virginia border roughly an hour and a half later. He continued north out of Bristol, picking up Highway 19 which carried them through the Clinch Mountain region of Virginia and into southern West Virginia.
At this point, Charles had been awake since they left Birmingham early that morning and it was now somewhere in the neighborhood of 3:00 a.m. He pulled into a gas station and asked the attendant where he might find a driver. He was directed him to the Doughboy Lunch Restaurant. He pulled the Cadillac into the all-night diner, deciding it was probably a good idea to get some coffee, maybe something to eat as well.
It was here that Charles Carr would claim he spoke to Hank for the last time. Once they parked, he said Hank got out of the car to stretch. He then asked Hank if he wanted something to eat to which he replied with what are believed to be his last words, "No, I just want to get some sleep." While this is possible, it seems entirely inconsistent with Hank’s condition just two hours earlier in Knoxville.
Physically and mentally exhausted, Carr entered the diner and found a cab driver who had just finished his shift, a 37 year old man by the name of Donald Surface. He agreed to drive them the rest of the way in exchange for an undisclosed amount of money and bus fair back home. Carr maintained that he and Surface stopped for a sandwich and beer in Princeton, West Virginia, and that he paid Surface and dropped him off at some point in West Virginia. Surface died in April 1965 without ever being interviewed, so his side of the story was never told, but newspaper and police reports place him at the wheel as the car neared Oak Hill, West Virginia, around 6:30 a.m. on January 1, 1953.
Regardless of who was at the wheel, the Cadillac next pulled into the parking lot of the Skyline Drive-In, a simple, cinder block restaurant on the roadside of Highway 16 in Hilltop, West Virginia. Carr looked into the backseat to check on Hank. He was lying in the back seat with his hands draped across his chest in a "V". Just the way the porters at the Andrew Johnson Hotel had placed him almost seven hours earlier.
The navy blue overcoat that had been covering Hank had fallen off of him. When Charles reached back and pulled it up over his body, his hand inadvertently touched Hank's, and it was cold and offered "unnatural resistance" as Carr would put it. He attempted to wake Hank, but got no response.
He went inside the restaurant, where he remembered seeing a potbellied stove in the corner. A man in his mid-50's walked out with Charles, took a look into the backseat, and upon seeing Hank said, "I think you've got a problem." The man advised Carr that the hospital was a couple of miles up Highway 16. Carr and Surface got back in the Cadillac and headed north.
Driving just two miles, they arrived in the small town of Oak Hill. The first thing they encountered was Burdette's Pure Oil 24-Hour Service Station. Surface stopped the car across the street from the station and Carr went inside to ask for directions to the hospital.
The service station attendant called the police and within a few minutes, officer Howard Janney arrived on the scene. He was directed to the Cadillac across the street where he opened the door and took a look at Hank lying in the backseat, confirming that he was in fact dead. Janney later told researcher Brian Turpen that Hank was still lukewarm to the touch, but that rigor mortis had set in on the arm. He then ordered Carr to follow him over to the hospital just one block away.
They pulled up to the back of the hospital, which served as the emergency entrance, where two interns came out to the car. They opened the doors, leaned inside, and confirmed to Carr that Hank Williams was dead. Carr, no doubt in a state of shock, asked if there was anything they could do for him, to which one of the interns flatly replied, "No, he's just dead." They asked Charles if he would like to take his jewelry, a ring and his watch which he did and later turned over to the county Sheriff.
The interns removed Hanks body from the back of the Cadillac, placed him on a stretcher and pushed him inside the hospital. He was pronounced "dead on arrival" at 7:00 AM January 1, 1953 by Dr. Diego Nunnari, who concluded from the state of rigor mortis and the temperature of the body, that Hank’s death could have possibly occurred two to four hours earlier, but stated he was unable to determine an exact time of death.

UPDATE ❈ Bhari Sinclair and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Trip Across the Globe
It’s been some time, hasn’t it?
Notes:
Time lapse: 8 months, August to March.  New title: The Writer (i’m bad with titles sry bout it) Occupation: Features Editor at Le Figaro; author
Tumblr media
(okay so there’s probably a better way I could have done this but I chose to just fragment it into important moments in time that took place over the past 8 months to “save us time” but it got long anyways yikes. anyways, this is what your boy has been up to!)
August.
It was Fall when the writer realized he needed to leave Paris; not for a lack of love of the place he called home, but because he felt the unavoidable urge to go after Annette. The letter she’d sent him mere weeks before his departure left an unsettling suspicion that things were not as peachy as he would have liked to believe. While he still held onto the apartment, he sold everything of his that couldn’t fit into a suitcase and bought a ticket on the first ocean liner to New York City.
An envelope containing the pages of the journal he wrote in during his time in the war, of which he had been working on turning into a manuscript of some sort (but was nowhere near being completed), was forgotten on a table at a bistro in the train station. He’d been juggling too many things at once, and the fear of missing the train to the docks made his mind foggy. The journal was picked up by a curious undergraduate not long after Bhari’s train departed
A terrible boat ride across the Atlantic made his first impression of the States lackluster, as his first week was spent in a fog of a head cold he unfortunately acquired from the chill of being on the sea.
Through a colleague’s connection, he rented a room from an eccentric engineer in Brooklyn. It was only when he got settled in that he realized his journals were gone. By day he would write, and by night he would travel uptown to search the clubs and cabarets for Annette. He worked out that his savings would only allow him to stay for three months, so he knew he needed to be diligent if he wanted to find her.
September.
A letter came by post for him in mid-Winter. It was from a professor of history at the Sorbonne who was passed along Bhari’s journal by one of his students. He’d found Bhari’s location by recognizing his name from the Journal and pressed the editor to obtain his whereabouts. The letter explained that he had taken an interest in Bhari’s stories from the Great War and wanted desperately to publish them, but would need to meet with him beforehand. Bhari was thankful that his drafts were found but hesitant to reveal them to anyone just yet.
A month and a half was spent being distracted by the city and its many distractions. Just when he thought he wasn’t going to find Annette, he passed a poster on the street of a painted girl sharing her likeness, and wearing that familiar shade of green.
He was spotted attending the show by Annette’s agent, Emmet Carlisle, whom Bhari had met back in Paris before her departure, and would be met with once more when he was intercepted trying to approach Annette after the show. Bhari was taken aside, and told (not so subtly) that his presence would ruin her potential and the future of her career. To further his suffering, Bhari was told she had a suitor. There was little evidence that suggested otherwise.
October.
He returned a week later to try again, but due to the debut of a new act, the shuffle of performers was so chaotic he missed Annette before she was swept away from the theater.  Not willing to give up yet, he would return to the theater once more, this time with a note to send her if he could not get to her himself. He planned to wait at the back entrance for her to come out of the building, but again was met with the agent and a few others instead. A physical altercation that left him bleeding and bruised would make that the final time he would visit the theater. It was clear he was not welcome in America, and he had never felt further from home.
Bhari sent his reply to the professor the following day, and boarded an ocean liner home a week after.
January.
After otherwise quiet months filled with meetings and correspondence---largely led by the professor---Amid the Weeping Lavender, Bhari’s journal from his time in as a reporter-turned-soldier in WWI was published in France and the UK to much acclaim. Unaccustomed to the sudden attention he was receiving, and still weighed down by the realization that Annette was gone, Bhari became a recluse. His parents wrote to him, but he would not respond. He refused to leave his home unless it was after dark, and even then he would only go so far as the Moulin, occasionally (but more frequently than he’d care to admit) he would join girls in the private rooms, or even take some home that he would meet in the streets.
The editor-in-chief of Le Figaro (a daily newspaper in Paris that took aim at power and privilege) was already familiar with Bhari’s work at Le Petit Journal, but Amid the Weeping Lavender was what made him want to reach out to Bhari with a job offer.
February.
The closest he came to socializing was with a courtesan named Flori, of whom he’d sparked something of a friendship with, but only as much as one can call another a friend while still paying them for their time.
With a new position at Le Figaro, he began to leave his house more often.
March.
    ‘Revenir au lit, Bhari.’
The brunette called for him from his bed. The same brunette whose skin was tan, clear and smooth, not a freckle to be seen. Her eyes were dark like his; deep pools of black water like the Seine in the night. By all accounts, she was different, and that was most important, wasn’t it? Atop his bed she combed the curly tresses that hung from her head like a heavy curtain using a woman’s comb she found in his bedside drawer, poking out from beneath a photo of a blonde-haired woman she believed it once belonged to. Bhari did not know her more than a few hours spent together on odd nights would allow him to. Even then, it was not as if they spent that time talking.
Bhari had never been this type of man, until he was. Until he forced himself to be.
      “Dans un moment.”
He called from the little kitchen. The smile on his face was apparent in his voice as he rinsed a cup in the tinny sink. French was becoming more comfortable for him, through practice. Time had been set aside each day, outside of the typical everyday interactions, to learn new words and familiarize them on his tongue. Children’s books helped, but having beautiful teachers worked best.
Bhari’s mouth opened to ask her a question, which would quickly slip his mind the moment he heard the ping of the doorbell. At this hour? he thought, but quickly dried his hands and turned to the hall. The brunette was stirred by the noise as well. From a hook on the wall he grabbed a shirt on the way to the door, a button done for every two steps.
Not far behind him, the young woman leaned against the wall, craning her neck to see who was behind the door as if she was right at home. To him, she was not, and were she close enough to see the mixed up expression that took his countenance into an equal blend of excitement and horror, she would have known not to make herself too comfortable.
“Annette?” he croaked. “You’ve come back?”

Refuse to be a decent human? Lose your house.
Warning: Very long story.
It's 2011, my boyfriend and I decided to rent a house with our best friends - an engaged couple with two kids. I'm changing names here: I'm Kylie, my boyfriend is Jim, and our couple friends are Brad and Angelina. Jim, Brad, and myself are active duty military.
After over a month of searching we found a really cute house- 1850 sqft, nice yard, great neighbors, only $1350/m, hardwood except for 1 room, 7 minutes from our base. The landlord is in a different state but tells us she pays one of the neighbors to manage the keys for her. It's a military town and that's not uncommon. We all met up with him, toured the house, decided to sign the lease.
We moved in sometime in August. We liked the house, but there were crickets coming into one of the bedrooms through a crack in the window sill. The landlord didn't want to fix it and said to caulk it. It worked, no problem.
We noticed the carpet in the living room was a little dingy and asked her if she would mind paying someone to clean it since we moved in that way. We even made a note of it and took pictures when we moved in. She said no. I bought my own cleaner and the carpet lightened a few shades.
In October, we went to cut the heat on and it didn't work. So we realized the oil tank was empty. Part of the lease states when we move out we needed to leave a full tank of oil, which isn't really a problem as long as we start with a full tank and use all the oil in it. Call the landlord and ask her to have the oil company come fill the tank - which it's 2011 so it's going to cost $1200 to do. She says no. We told her fine, we wouldn't be leaving a full tank when the lease was over though. She got mad and said we had to because it was a clause in our lease. We had the oil company provide statements to say the last time it was filled was that prior January and it was empty when they came to fill our tank that month. We filled the tank, but the heat still didn't work. It's been 2 weeks and it's really getting cold, we asked the LL to get a repairman out to the house. Brad and Angelina have two small kids that need to stay warm. My landlord took another week to fix the heat, and the people that did it were... questionable. It worked for a month, but then quit. We called in our own repairmen to come handle it since the last ones creeped me out, and he noticed some major issues with the chimney that needed attention right away. Like it was unsafe to run the heat at all, the damned thing was about to collapse. We let her know, emailed scans of the paperwork from our nice Honeywell tech and two quotes from contractors to get the work done. (it's going to be $3000-3500ish) It's an emergency repair, at the point it's December and we are really cold. We were using space heaters. The kids have chest colds and Angelina is ready to fly into our landlord's state to handle her physically. I mailed all of that information to her (Angelina's bodily threats omitted) with a signature confirmation and a letter stating the issue.
A few days pass and nothing from our bitch LL. I got onto Google and read the landlord tenant act and local landlord court cases just to see if I had a leg to stand on. I also spoke to my JAG, who's brother happened to be a real estate lawyer, who was also friends with my next door neighbor (the keyholder dude, who surprise, never got paid to watch the house) and decided to come over for dinner with all of us at their place. He gave me some really good info. The next morning, I called our landlord and told her, "look, you get this repair done or I will condemn the house and not pay a dime of rent until it's done". She says she doesn't believe me. I overnighted a certified letter to her explaining the issue and requesting the repair be started within 5 business days since it was an emergency and I had already reported it a week prior. 5 days go by, nothing. At this point I'm ready to walk out on the lease but don't have quite enough legal issues to back that up so- Jim and I requested 20 days of vacation from the military. I drafted a letter to LL telling her she had 10 days to get the repair done or we would terminate the lease, and we would not be paying rent while the heat was in disrepair. I cited the previous letter and included her signature confirmation for it also. 4 days before we go on vacation, I overnighted and signature confirmationed the letter. Two days before we are set to go on vacation I called a city building inspector, set an appointment, he came and condemned the house - it took him less than 15 minutes to decide. Brad and Angelina took off to Angelina's mom's house and Jim and I headed out to spend a few weeks in WARM, SUNNY Florida with his Cuban family. (mmmm, the food). We prorated rent for every day the house was condemned. I called the building inspector every few days to see if the work was done. He also demanded that my landlord do a few minor electrical repairs. Several days have gone by... I spent half that month's rent on good food, liquor, and Disney world tickets. On the 6th day in Florida, the landlord calls me threatening eviction. I told her to please take me to court because I was ready to embarrass her. I cited the landlord tenant act, told her I was going to sue for travel costs to FL, hotel costs, and at that point she was already looking at $850 and it was just going to get more costly. (Longshot, but, I was mad). I also said we were prepared to just walk out if it wasn't done by the time the certified letter stated it should be, again, I wasn't kidding. I had already reserved a uhaul. Oh, and she would be reimbursing me for that $1100 in oil I hadn't been able to burn. She said fine and finally replaced the chimney two weeks after the place was condemned. My neighbor told me she had to borrow money from her family to get it done. Not my problem. She also told me I was a horrible person who was torturing her and her 5 year old who were victims of domestic violence. She also told me we were only slightly better than the last tenants, who she "thought were black by how terrible the house looked when they left". Okay, wow, a slum lord and a racist - I should play the lottery. I'm sorry for your situation but your husband has been a shit to you since you got together. How do I know? Turns out, one of my supervisors is friends with her old supervisor and he and other members of her chain of command had responsed to fights where her and her husband hit each other. Apparently the husband is a drunk too. They tried to get her to leave him but she is just as bad, she busted out his windshield one time and burned all his stuff another. Turns out she got a general administration discharge. She seemed so nice and sweet when we were getting ready to sign that lease. I still can't believe what a bucket of kuku for coco puffs she turned out to be.
Whatever, we came home to a house with functioning heat. Brad and Angelina decided not to move back in but that was all cool with Jim and me. We notarized an agreement between us and told them we totally understood and would take over the rent. Missed them after they left, though.
Later on, in March, a realtor knocked on my door and said he wanted to show the house to a couple. I said, you have the wrong place buddy, I'm renting this right now. He's like no, the owner wants a short sale hopefully by July. I explained I had no notice and was a little confused but it was okay. He was very uncomfortable and unhappy to have walked into a situation where a tenant didn't even know he was coming. I told him it was totally fine, and went on to divulge some details about his new client. He was pretty appalled. He leveled with me- its a cute house but really only worth $90k due to the market crash. It had last sold for $124k, according to zuilla. She's asking for 120k and on the verge of foreclosure. Seriously? I let the couple and realtor in the next day. Didn't worry about it after that. He came to take detailed pictures so he wouldn't have to bother me with flaky potential buyers. He was so nice, I let him help me find a new house to rent when my lease was up. We are still friends on Facebook.
Then, in July the realtor called me and asked if he could show the house to a client. Absolutely. I cleaned and made sure I looked nice for her visit....and when they got to my house I noticed the lady was black. And she wanted to rent. I said, ma'am, call me later today and don't tell anyone. She did! I told her what my LL said about how she couldn't believe her past tenants were white because they left the house trashed when they left. I said, "I don't think this is a good house for you, I know a great guy who is renting out his beach side condo for the next year while he goes out to Africa, why don't you call him?" I text his listing to her, she calls him, ends up renting his house.
None of that is really revenge. Before we moved out, Jim and I cleaned the house. We left the carpets sparkling clean (had professionals come in and do it), payed a gardener to come in and make the yard spiffy, patched up some small nail holes and even painted some window trim that was chipped when we moved in. we basically left it better than we found it, we had already repainted 3 bedrooms in flattering colors when we first moved in (that was approved by the LL no problem of course). We took pictures before and after we moved in. A month goes by, we are all settled in our new condo, and she didn't give us a dime back in freaking deposit. $2400 down the damned drain, plus the cost of little repairs we made out of pocket so we couldn't have to deal with her crazy ass.
I was angry. I began organizing to go to court. Then suddenly Jim is told he's deploying soon. the fuck. A week goes by- Also, I'm pregnant. Which we were casually "not trying but trying" to do. We were happy about that part, but I was puking every day twice a day and emotional. Then Angelina calls me and guess who is on Craigslist slinging her shit hole slum? My LL. I lost it. I got on the same forum her ad was on and posted about the house, every single problem we had, every phone call, every snotty email, how many weeks we went without heat, the crickets, LL's messed up relationship with her off and on again husband, the oil tank, and the racist comments. I never said "don't rent or buy", just shared my experience as a tenant. I didn't name any names but I did link her ad. Received 7 emails thanking me stating LL seemed really nice on the phone but they would be dodging that bullet.
The house foreclosed a few months later.

What’s that sound? It’s the Festival Bee! (Get it? Buzz buzz)
Tumblr media
Hello Filmgoers! For those of you who can’t attend Sundance or have a hard time finding and keeping up with the news, I will tell you all the buzz I’ve heard about this year's Sundance and the films. There is so much happening and still a lot to find, but I put together some interesting things being talked about.
The hottest films this year seem to be Fresh directed by Mimi Cave, Alice, Emergency, and When You Finish Saving The World. Fresh has a review out on The Hollywood reporter by Angie Han says, “The real narrative shocks lay in how they manifest, and the gruesome consequences that ripple from them.” I have not seen this film and I regret not buying tickets for it, but it was bought by Searchlight and is set to premiere in the US on March 4th. You can find the list of films being bought and distributed here.
32 Sounds has been a buzz for it’s, well, its immersive sound experience. I have yet to attend it for it’s full length, but the first part was very interesting. They have moments where you close your eyes to really focus on the sound and nothing else. Last year the artist, Sam Green, premiered 7 Sounds, and this year he is back with 32 Sounds. @dezbot on twitter says that 32 Sounds “is a beautifully transcendent documentary” and highly recommends you watch it with headphones.
On twitter people are talking about a multitude of things. One person found a karaoke room, which I have yet to find, and apparently they are secret easter eggs you can find on the New Frontier Spaceship. Many people are also expressing what films they watched and which ones they like and do not like. From the majority of tweets I looked at, people were talking about Fresh and it’s understandable because people are expressing how much they loved it.
Sundance had it’s troubles when first going virtual and starting up. People who paid to go in person did not get refunded properly and were upset about that. On the first day with the first premiere of 32 Sounds they had to shut down the cinema room for a bit so that they could reset because lots of people were experiencing problems with technical stuff like sound and video. Once Sundance got into its festival days, they seemed to work things out and make things run smoothly.
Films that have been sold out are Emily the Criminal, Palm Trees and Power Lines, Meet Me In The Bathroom, Honk For Jesus; Save Your Soul, Cha Cha Real Smooth, jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy, Alice, Dual, Sharp Stick, You Won’t Be Alone, Fresh, Good Luck To You Leo Grande, Am I Ok?, and more.
Most recently, Sundance announced the final selection in the documentary competition. It is Navalny directed by Daniel Roher. It is about Alexi Navalny and how he survived a poison attack and became a Russian opposition leader. It premieres January 25th at 5:00 pm PT.
There is still so much I can’t wait to explore!
Happy Filmgoing

I will keep on writing this stuff until someone stops me. A drive to the airport 3rd December 1995
My car was a blue VW Citi Golf Sport and by the 3rd of December 1995, that was all I had left along with four suitcases of clothes and 6 cardboard boxes of geological and prehistory archaeological specimens. I went to the post office and sent the boxes surface mail to England. They arrived late January when we were having a very hard time in our first month in Norfolk, UK…but at least I had my stones and stone arrowheads
All of this had been triggered by me sitting down one night in early November 1995 and working out a survival budget after the regional administration had overnight cut grants to the care homes and schools I was providing training and consultancy to, and the consequent loss of almost all my work just a few weeks ahead of the long South African summer school holidays.
I got a few weeks work on a dreadfully sad neurology ward which provided end of life and long term care to people who had suffered catastrophic brain damage as a result of car crash injuries, aneurysms and gunshot injury but the income from that was not enough to pay the bills and keep us.
In late November it became apparent very suddenly the budget was not going to work. There is no safety net in South Africa and so over one weekend I sold everything we had and bought air tickets for the UK. There were other factors involved as well but the most urgent one was the need to feed the family. I applied by post for six jobs at hospitals in Bradford, Leeds, and Norfolk. The Norfolk one came up first and I ended up working there for twenty years from the 15th January 1996. Like all other hospitals in the UK at the time, they did not recognise overseas experience so, it was back to being the lowest grade of staff nurse and starting over (that is a crazy system by the way. In many respects healthcare in South Africa could teach the UK a great deal. The UK is a little bit arrogant).
Early on Sunday 3rd December 1995 we all got in the car and drove to Jan Smuts’ airport. We had lived in South Africa since December 1984 (apart from the 14 months in the Isle of Man) and for the kids, it was the only home they could really remember. I left the car in the car park at the airport, with the keys and documents taped to the underside. A friend was going to pick it up later and take it back to the garage I had been buying it from. It was the oddest of feelings walking away from the car. We were essentially ‘clean’ in a sense. We did not own a thing in the world apart from what was in our bags and on our backs. The car had done over 120,000 miles in three years and had never let me down. My daughters can still recite the registration number and joke about how I once pushed the gear lever through the floor of the car.
We arrived in an English winter dressed for midsummer in South Africa. The kids could not believe the cold.  It took them years until they felt warm even in summer. As a family, it took us three years to get established and comfortable in England. And some very long working hours. I was planning to fly into Johannesburg in September on my way to Zambia but of course, COVID 19 has blocked all of that. I will go there again. I loved the place. It really is a very special country.
Tumblr media
That’s the end of this series of stories. There is a bonus one tomorrow about being stuck In a tunnel fifty metres underground, with the proto-human, Australopithecus Africanus. Then we will move over onto near-death and other fun experiences in odd places around the world.

My 2017 summary
With a “Keep reading” for your dashboard convenience because this is extremely long
January: I started the year with a delay on the flight taking me back to my place from my parent’s home, arriving late at night and having to wake up early next day to work. That next day I also had a phone interview that went well. I discovered that one of my friends didn’t have his contract extended and was now jobless. I went to a small house party where I met someone that made me fall into a massive crush on that person. One week later I met with a friend and one of my crush’s friends to talk and she promised to organize another gathering. We went to dinner with some other friends and ended the night at one of them’s place. I did a second interview and got the job. We had a second gathering and tried to know her a bit better but didn’t go well since as a social butterfly she couldn’t keep her attention only on me. A friend went back to his country and the farewell party was a blast.
February: Opened a bank account. Started talking to my crush on Facebook trying to meet for a coffee (date). She was up for it but “rain check”. I went back home to pick more clothes and stuff since my stay here was going to be longer than expected. Did some shopping for new clothes. Came back. Started my new job. Super stressful from day one. Tough coworkers. They threw the kitchen sink at me from the beginning. Continued trying to get a date with her but always an excuse. Started to feel really disappointed because the conversation was stagnant and with more time between replies every time. A friend working at the same company started telling me that the way they were treating me was wrong.
March: I met my crush on the bus one day and I was surprised to see her taking that bus. We talked and she told me she had spent the night at a friend’s house. At that moment it stroke me that maybe they had something together and that was the reason she wasn’t much into meeting with me. The conversation was dead anyways and we stopped talking. I was obliged to work for a few days from 8am to 11pm and was told that I couldn’t consider that overtime. That made me talk to HR to ask what exactly was overtime because if 15h at the office is not overtime then what is it. HR’s answer was “yeah we get a lot of complaints in your team. Get some experience and then leave. It’s what everyone does”. That baffled me. Then HR talked to my boss and he scolded me in private for having talked to HR. I went out with my friends and did not enjoy myself at all. Loud, noise, drunk people, being tired, worried about my job. That day I saw the friend at whose house I met my crush. We caught up and told to meet more often because we were rarely meeting. We didn’t see or talked to each other the rest of the year. I continued working long hours but now at least I was being able to charge overtime.
April: At my birthday I took cakes, croissants and other sweets fro breakfast to invite everyone at work. They were impressed with it but some told me that I should have brought this when I joined and then also for birthday so I was still owing them another breakfast. You have to be fucking miserable to think something like that. I went to Frankfurt by train for 2 days for a training. We had dinner with the rest of attendants and I remember one girl rolled her eyes at something on of my colleagues said; I found it funny because that was my sentiments exactly. Continued looking for a new place to live. First, for a change, but second becaue I wanted to meet new people and I wasn’t feeling close enogh with my current housemates/friends. Registered in OkCupid.
May: A new guy joined the team. That forced me to sit on a different area and spend more time with a different part of the team. I went to play laser tag with my friends/housemates and it was great. I went to a corporate event with the rest of the division (not only my team). There was a second optional day but I didn’t stay for it along with many more people who returned by bus at the end of the day. My colleagues took great offense in me not staying for the 2nd day. I visited some properties during the month but none convinced me. A guy left at work because “he wasn’t happy there”.
June: Another guy joined at work. I had tickets for a concert and couldn’t attend because at work they set a training the same day in another city. Went to the training with all the team and after it he had a visit to a castle and an exhibit followed by a dinner. Then they continued the party and got drunk, caused a brawl at a bar, stole bottles and a flag from the hotel. Me and other guy went to our rooms and didn’t participate in that, which was considered “poor teambuilding”. Finally found a place to move. It wasn’t perfect but I wanted to move before summer and it was the best I could find. Also I wanted to meet new housemates. Everyday I was less and less happy with the people at my job. I didn’t attend a summer party at the office just to avoid spending time with them.
July: I moved to my new house. 2 days later I lost my job for “lack of integration with the team”. Independently on the quality of my work and the opinion that I was meeting expectations, the fact that some didn’t like me on a personal level mattered more. They all “hid” on a meeting room while I was packing but got out too soon and crossed with me. None of them said a word or looked at me. I found myself in a new house, jobless right at the bginning of summer (quiet period). So after a week sending some applications I went back home with my parents. Felt depressing to be back in summer, with no friends, jobless and having to think what to do next. Kept applying nothing much happened the rest of the month.
August: During the first half of the month I stayed with my parents. I received an invitation to some online tests for a job, which lit me up. Went back to my place by mid month. Registered for unemployment benefits as my contract finished mid-month (officially I was on holiday without having to return to the office at the end of it). Registering was an ordeal. Tons of paperwork to do and counselors to meet. Did an initial online interview for the job for which I did the online tests also. Met again with my friends and went out with them a couple of times. They said that I looked much happier now but I wasn’t feeling that happy.
September: Went out with friends again but that night I didn’t enjoy it that much. Continued doing the benefits paperwork which turned into a bureaucratic nightmare. I needed a document that I could only obtain if I had worked at my country of origin but I never worked at my country of origin so it was impossible to obtain. At the end, I had to translate the only document I could obtain from my country certifying that I hadn’t worked there and wasn’t receiving benefits. My closest friend took some holidays and the others didn’t care that much about me so for weeks I didn’t see any of them. Rained a lot during that time. I went to an agency for a job but the client company was under restructuring and the process was on hold. Did the interview for the role of the online tests and it didn’t go well. They asked me to wait as some people from other department say my cv and they were opening a job too and wanted to meet me. I went a week later to do tests for the second role. My unemployment benefits were finally approved. I started meeting regularly again with my closest. At home, I rarely saw my other housemates. They were coming home at late hours and leaving early or not very social and spending their time on their rooms. I went to a birthday party. Was crowded, loud and I didn’t enjoy myself there. I met a friend’s friend to help her with something she is studying.
October: I met with friends a couple of times. My closest friend ditched me a couple of times because he was hangover. I went to a music fair and bought several CDs. I went alone to a concert because nobody else likes the same music as me. I liked it a lot. During the concert I saw a really nice girl close to me. I thought about talking to her but I didn’t dare to. I imagined that she wouldn’t like to be approached by a stranger. I did an interview that went really well. I was praised for my knowledge and told that with this CV I could work anywhere I wanted. It gave me hopes that I could get the job. I discovered that the guy that was hired in May at my previous job had been fired too. Apparently they didn’t like him on a personal level, like me. I met for Halloween with some of my friends to have a drink.
November: The first day of the month I went to have lunch with my friend. He called me out of nowhere, made me shower in a rush; all of that to then make me wait for an hour. We took a walk after lunch and thought about going to a cinema that plays old films at some point during the month. My house was without heating for 2 days.  I went for a little walk and it was dark and cold. Almost got a cold. I had a ridiculous interview in which they didn’t understand my profile, the profile for the job was for someone totally different, I had to make a nonsensical test and they “sold me” that most of the time I would be making photocopies. What a disaster. Then, the next day I got the answer from the interview I was praised at in October. It was a no. It pissed me off so much because it was almost a practical joke. I was almost in tears. Then my close friend was out for the weekend so I ended up going to the cinema alone. I asked for feedback and they told me that the only reason was having been fired from my previous job. But they gave my cv to other team that was interested in meeting. After another fruitless week I went to the cinema with a friend. After, we went for a beer and he told me he was considering relocating to Berlin. A girl at the bar looked at me with a smile for a long period and made me feel a bit nervous and flattered but nothing happened. I went to the cinema the next 2 days too. I had the other interview with the other team and it was surprisingly short and superficial. I had another interview for another role on the phone and went well. Another visit to the cinema with a friend. During this month I was so down and depressed and hopeless that I forgot to buy a ticket for a concert I wanted to go to. It was sold out when I remembered and I missed it. So, before the same happening twice I bought ticket to another concert.
December: I had a second phone interview (second part of the phone interview that went well). Strangely, I didn’t pass it because I lacked a specific knowledge which made me question why did they interview me at all. I went to the second concert and it was great. I’ve been listening to that band for more than 10 years and it was the first time I saw them live. Being in December already and knowing that this is a quiet hiring period until the new year starts (new budgets, etc...), I gave up with jobsearching for this year. Everyone said that January and February are much better. I had a small gathering with friends at one of them’s place. I was quite in a low mood but went anyway. Some of them I hadn’t seen them since summer (yay good friends). They were surprised that I was still unemployed. And they even said it with a bit of a smirk. Those who hadn’t gone through the same and had more opportunities in their lives can’t understand what you’re going through. It snowed several times. I went to the cinema alone one more time. When I told a friend he asked why didn’t I call. When I want to meet no one is available. When I go alone others ask me why I went alone. My close friend called me to go to the cinema and because of his poor planning skills, I had to rush to the cinema (he loves to call with no notice) only to wait for him for 20 min. When he arrived, there were no more seats available so we didn’t go at all. We had a coke at a restaurant and then I left because I had enough bullshit. Next day I took a flight home to spend Christmas with my parents. Listened to music, read a book I had pending, looked a bit into job offers (not much available at this time) and disconnected from the shitty reality this year has been to me.

Blow Us All Away
(original date: 07 June 2016)
In 2007, a young Puerto Rican went on vacation, a book by Ron Chernow under his arm, and came back inspired to write something that is today known as "the best goddamn musical on Broadway ever". Kidding. That's just what I'm saying. But it's getting seriously good reviews. Like, astonishingly good reviews.
Lin-Manuel Miranda went on holiday to relax, came back with an idea and nine years later he performed at The White House, had the Obamas come see his musical, has his musical nominated for 16 Tony Awards -the most nominations in history-, his show is sold out until January 2017 and a whole generation of teenagers and young adults are suddenly interested in American History. Like, He Did That!
"Lin-Manuel Miranda? Yo, who the f is this?" Well. Let me educate you.
Lin-Manuel is the most precious little bean of a man you will ever hear of. As I said, he started working on Hamilton: The American Musical nine years ago after reading the biography of Alexander Hamilton (one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, in case you're like me and didn't know). In 2009, after working on first raps about Hamilton, Lin performed the intro song "Alexander Hamilton" at the White House Evening of Poetry, Music, and the Spoken Word, and received Standing Ovations for it. Little did the shy young man then know, that his work would be appreciated by tens of thousand of people. Little did he know, that his musical would be so loved and that it would inspire new generations of writers and singers and actors. Little did he know, that he would blow us all away.
The musical itself is a masterpiece. I haven't really realised until of late, that I have so much love for musicals. But I do. I love musicals. I have come to realise that this is probably also the reason why I love Disney movies so much, because they basically are musicals, too. As a kid, I genuinely liked High School Musical. I loved Mamma Mia! and I enjoyed Glee as well as Pitch Perfect. It's not necessarily the stories. Actually, I don't think it is the stories at all. It's the music. The singing. The breaking out into a song mid-sentence. That was what I liked. Same goes with Disney. I loved the stories of course, well, most of them anyway. But the thing that hooked me, was that Mulan freed China in a song, that Hercules became a Hero in a song, that Simba grew up in a song. And that is the beautiful thing about musicals. Marius and Cosette fell in love in a song. Javert went through an emotional crisis in a song. Jean Valjean realised who he was in a song. The French Revolution happened in a song or two. That's the beauty of it. It happens in a song. It's not a boringly told story. It's music in your ears and you don't even notice that it's already over shortly after.
And that is what makes Hamilton a wonderful musical, too. It takes the story of some old boring white dude that you didn't care about in your history lessons because your teacher just didn't manage to make it at least a little bit interesting, and it makes music out of it. Lin tells Hamilton's story with raps and rhymes, with music and dance. Cabinet meetings become rap battles, the war becomes a beautifully choreographed dance fight number. Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Laurens, Hamilton, Burr- they are not these boring old white dudes on your money anymore. Suddenly, Madison is this powerful Nigerian American man with a booming voice, Hamilton and Laurens are young Puerto Ricans who know how to rock long hair, Washington is this tower of a man with the brightest smile, Burr's dancing is amazing and Jefferson knows how to spit some serious verses and can rap like hell. Suddenly, American History is pretty attractive.
I first listened to the entire Cast Album on May 11 this year. 46 songs later and I was a changed person. A few days after that I bought the album on iTunes and have been listening to it more or less non-stop. Sometimes I mix it up with a bit of Les Miserables or a few other songs that I have on my phone. But the other thousand songs I have in my library are mostly forgotten and ignored in favour of Lin's masterpiece of a musical. It's been now nearly a month, and I know basically all of the lyrics. Well, I can sing/rap along side the tracks, a few songs I even know by heart. It's not even rare anymore that I wake up in the morning with a song from Hamilton on my mind. I am a goner for this musical.
On Sunday 12th are the Tony Awards. 16 Nominations for Hamilton. That's a lot. Lin himself is nominated for "Best Book of a Musical", "Best Original Score" and "Best Actor in a Musical". Lin wrote the book, he wrote the score and music, he plays the leading role. The man is non-stop. And he doesn't just stop there, either. Pretty usual for Broadway shows, there's a lottery for 10$ tickets before each show. But they are obviously pretty limited. The lottery for Hamilton is, to say it mildly, pretty well used. The musical is sold out until next January, so the lottery is the only way right now for people to still get tickets. On the first preview night -so, before the musical even officially opened- there were 700 people queueing for the lottery. SEVENHUNDRED PEOPLE! That's insane. And guess what? Lin, the precious human being he is, gives back. He gives back something to the people coming to the lottery. Each day, before each performance, for each lottery, he goes out there in front of the Richard Rodgers Theater and thanks the people for coming, for spending half an hour to get tickets for his show. He encourages them to come back the next day if they don't win, because they will be here for a bit. And it's not just that. He brings friends, brings co-stars, and gives the people an experience. What is now known as #Ham4Ham is Lin's way of giving back and thanking people. He now does short videos to put online, because he can't always come out, and because there's an online lottery, too.
And besides all that, he also manages to be the freaking most gentle and genuinely nicest human being ever. Just- just look at the way he tweets.
I mean. I am at a loss of words, to be honest. He does so much. He keeps giving. He is non-stop. And there's still a million things he hasn't done.
I haven't heard of Lin before Hamilton managed its way into my line of sight. Apparently he was in a House MD episode once, and I have probably seen it, but I can't remember. Anyways. In this last month, Lin has managed to secure himself a place on my bucket list of people I'd like to meet, right next to Benedict Cumberbatch (whom I've met before briefly) and Zachary Levi, who are both people that inspire me so much to chase my dreams and to not give up. Ben always inspires me to read, to keep learning stuff and to not let go of my dream to work in the film industry. Zac has always been the one to inspire me to be nice and kind to strangers, to keep giving. He is a role model especially in my believes and my faith. He inspires me to be genuinely myself. Now Lin. He managed to spark something inside of me, that I didn't know was there. I have always loved music, and always sang along the music I was listening to. I'm not a very good singer. I tend to imitate the singing of the person I'm listening to, instead of actually singing myself. But Lin, he managed to spark this love for singing again. I don't give much fucks about what people think about me, but I think singing has always been a thing where I did care that it was more or less good. But now I drop some verses of rap from time to time while listening, and I don't give a shit.
Lin is right there with Zac and Ben, inspiring me to be who I truly am. He inspires me to be passionate about music and writing. And especially my love for musicals. And he inspires me to unapologetically portray and show people who I am, what I like. Shove it into their faces, that this kid is a big nerd. That I am enthusiastic about the things I like, that I consume them wholeheartedly and not just a bit. If I like something or someone, then I know a shit ton about it. And Lin inspires me to cherish that.
I seriously wish that the Hamilton Musical finds its way to Europe as well. Apparently there's something planned for London and then also continental Europe. It won't be the same cast, of course. And even though, I find that rather sad, I appreciate the fact that they're thinking about coming to Europe. Because I haven't had the chance to see the musical. I saw snippets and some gifs. I have seen them "perform" at Ham4Ham. But it's not the real show, the real story. I think the cast album covers a lot of the whole play, but not all of it. And I would of course love to see the whole dancing, and apparently the lighting is amazing. But yeah, I'm willing to wait for it.
I hope that if I will ever get the possibility to go to New York (I'm going to San Diego this summer, so no luck in going this year), that they will still be on Broadway and that I will get the possibility of seeing this masterpiece live, with some of the original cast. That would be amazing.
But for now, I can only wish them all the best. I will be watching the Tony's on Sunday, will cheer them on, because Lin and the whole cast deserve this so much. I will continue to follow Lin's career, see what he's up to, check out his projects.
Until then, there's one last thing I can say:
Lin-Manuel Miranda. America (and the rest of the world) sings for you.
We have the honour to be your obedient servants.
A. (Ham)

Andy Khawaja: ‘The whistleblower’
Andy Khawaja is charged with campaign finance violations. He says there’s a bigger story
(…)
‘They fucked me, Paul, they fucked me. First, they destroyed my business. Now they’re coming after me.’ Andy Khawaja believes he’s being persecuted because of what he knows. And what he knows, he tells me, is that Saudi Arabia and the Emirate of Abu Dhabi bought the 2016 election for Donald Trump. (…)
Khawaja claims the Saudis and the Emiratis illegally paid tens or even hundreds of millions of dollars to the Trump campaign in 2016. He says that to keep it secret, they disguised the money as small donations from Americans, using stolen identities and ‘virtual credit cards’ or gift cards — donations of less than $200 do not have to be reported to the Federal Election Commission and made public. He claims the Saudis and the Emiratis were able to make thousands of such small donations at a time using the latest payment processing technology. Khawaja knows this, he says, because he sold the know-how to their middleman, George Nader, who will be the central character in this story.
All those supposedly involved in this have issued denials or preferred not to comment. They include Nader’s lawyers; the Saudi and Emirati embassies in Washington, DC; the Trump campaign and the Republican National Committee; and Stripe, the company that took credit card payments for them both during the election. Khawaja says he’s tried and failed to get the FBI to investigate. The Bureau isn’t saying what it makes of his story. Khawaja also says he has spoken to a National Security Council member, a congressman, a senator and a former general. Nothing has come of that, either. Meanwhile, his life has been shattered, his company wrecked. But he believes he will be vindicated in the end. (…)
Payment processing is Khawaja’s business. He knows credit cards and he knows how to move money. He may also know how to move money secretly.
In early 2016, Khawaja wanted to create an online shopping mall for the Middle East, an Arab Amazon. He needed investors. Enter George Nader. Like Khawaja, Nader is Lebanese-American. His name might be familiar because he was a witness in the Mueller inquiry. In January 2017, Nader set up a meeting in the Seychelles that he apparently hoped would establish a back channel between the Trump administration and the Kremlin. He’s now awaiting sentence in the US, a convicted pedophile. (…)
Khawaja says that in September 2016, Nader told him why he needed the payment engine. Abu Dhabi wanted help making ‘online micropayments’ in bulk to the Trump campaign and the RNC. He describes Nader asking for help to make it work: ‘How can we generate electronic payouts to the online donation websites? I would like you to show us how we would be able to do that.’
Khawaja wasn’t taking notes or recording these conversations. These are his recollections of what Nader said, and we have only his word. He remembers Nader explaining why they wanted to fund the Trump campaign. According to Khawaja, Nader said: ‘I’ve been meeting with the Trump campaign people…we have a deal with Trump: my boss, His Highness, made a deal that if we help Trump get elected, he’s going to be harsh on Iran, he’s going to take out the nuclear deal that the Obama administration made. That will cripple the Iranian economy and will sanction Iran from selling oil again. It will make it very difficult for them to compete in the oil market. That’s worth a hundred billion dollars to us. That’s the reason we cannot allow Hillary to win at any cost. She must lose.’ (…)
The plot to buy the election was still taking shape, Khawaja says, when he walked away: Nader would have to develop the payment engine without his help. He heard nothing more until January 2017, after Trump had won and was preparing to take office. Khawaja says he gave Nader ‘a couple of spare tickets’ to events at the Inauguration. He describes Nader sitting at his table, smiling and saying, ‘You see, I told you, I told you Trump was going to win.’
Khawaja remembers Nader telling him that Trump’s first foreign trip would be to Riyadh, to ‘celebrate’ with MbS and MbZ: ‘They’re the ones that got him elected.’ There was more — Saudi Arabia and the UAE would announce a blockade of their rival, Qatar, and Trump would support it.
Trump did, in fact, make his first foreign trip to Riyadh, in May 2017. And he did support the blockade of Qatar, which began in June 2017. Khawaja says Nader told him during their talk at the Inauguration that they had put ‘a few hundred million’ into the effort to elect Trump. At the fish restaurant, I ask Khawaja if he thinks the payments are continuing today. ‘One hundred percent.’ (…)
While there is no hard evidence that Khawaja’s story is true, his account is supported by two witnesses. On our night out in Beirut, we meet another businessman who dealt with Nader in the UAE. This man, who arrives in a silver Rolls Royce, recalls that he, too, was asked by Nader to sell him a credit card payments gateway in 2016, and that Nader mentioned a connection to the UAE. He remembers Nader seeming almost desperate to acquire the gateway.
And it seems that Nader told at least one other person about the small-dollar donations. Around the time of the 2016 election, a friend of Nader’s for 30 years says he saw him for lunch at the Beverly Wilshire hotel in Los Angeles. This man’s recollections of what Nader said are remarkably similar to Khawaja’s. He also says that Nader told him he was getting $12 million a month from the royal court in Abu Dhabi to run the election operation: ‘He finally got his big payday.’ (…)
Nader did tell me that he had been to the White House ‘a dozen times’ to help set up Trump’s visit to Riyadh. If this is true, was Nader acting as an unregistered agent of Saudi Arabia and the UAE? After I saw him in Abu Dhabi, I met a senior Emirati diplomat in Washington, DC. He remembered Nader ‘frantically banging on the embassy’s door’ after Mueller’s team had arrested him at the airport. But, he said, the UAE had been careful to stay ‘35,000 feet above the US election’. (…)
There remains the question of Trump’s phenomenal fundraising among small donors. Barack Obama reinvented online fundraising and in 2012 small donations provided 28 percent of his campaign budget. In 2016, only 22 percent of Hillary Clinton’s campaign money came from small donors. In the same year, 69 percent of all the money the Trump campaign raised came from individuals giving less than $200 each. And — a slightly different measure — in one quarter last year, 99 percent of Trump’s contributors were small donors. (…)
‘How do you like that title? I’m the whistleblower, Paul, the whistleblower. The whistleblower who revealed foreign government interference in our election has been charged to cover up for the Trump administration. Falsely accused and charged…it’s Operation Suffocation, Operation Choke Point. End-to-end. Take him out. Kill him. They tried to frame me so bad. At the end of the day, I sleep like a baby at night. Because I know I didn’t do anything. I am the whistleblower.’

Saturday, August 4th 2018 – Basildon Park, Berkshire
Headed for an evening at a particularly excellent restaurant in Berkshire (or possibly Wiltshire – I haven’t double checked yet) we were casting around for something to do in the afternoon, to make it into more of a “holiday” than just a trip out for dinner. After casting around for a while, and lighting on a number of possibilities that we then rejected on the grounds that a sunny Saturday in August would be more crowded than we could deal with and hang on to our sanity we realised that Basildon Park was not that far off our route, and neither of us had ever been, or in fact knew anything about the place.
Tumblr media
I suppose I knew it was nowhere near Basildon, which is probably just as well, given that a) Basildon is an unremittingly grim sort of place – or at least it was back when one of our friends used to live there – and b) on the wrong side of London given where we wanted to be. Actually it’s close to Reading (which is not that thrilling a place either but nowhere near as bad as Basildon), but we didn’t go there en route anyway, just headed down a series of quite small and lovely country lanes until a final slightly unexpected veer off into the car park, which was full. We were directed to the also pretty full overflow car park. It looked as if the whole world (or at least a large part of the Netherlands) had decided to visit all at once.
Tumblr media
However, once we arrived at the ticket office we could see that there was a great deal of space available inside in terms of grounds at least – the house was not visible from there – and so we decided we’d nose around the house first, and then, if it had cooled off at all, we might take a stroll around the grounds should we still have time.
The walk through the woods to get to the house was lovely, and cool, and reminded me somewhat of the path between the car park and the castle at Burg Eltz, though less steep.
Tumblr media
It also contains a number of fun benches with carved wooden animal heads for armrests…
Tumblr media
And some very Tim Burton-esque trees! I know I kept expecting a hobbit or two to pop out from behind the trees any second.
Tumblr media
Anyway, reaching the house it was soon apparent that it’s an interesting structure, very much the picture of Palladian symmetry, which I think is pretty rare. Most houses have had bits added on (or removed), and so they don’t have quite the precise frontage that Basildon Park manages. The estate was bought by Francis Sykes, who had made a fortune in the East India Company, and it was he who demolished the house that was already there and had John Carr, the architect, build him a new one. Most people who know Carr’s work won’t be surprised by the style, but the location is unusual; he didn’t normally work outside Yorkshire and its immediate vicinity. As a Yorkshireman himself, Sykes managed to persuade Carr out of his normal geographical comfort zone, and work began on the house, though it was not completed in Sykes’ lifetime, which presumably didn’t help his political ambitions, given that he’d bought the estate because he required a house suitable for entertaining that would also show off his at this point considerable wealth and that was close to London. He wasn’t alone; many rich returnees from India settled in this part of Berkshire, so much so that it became known as “the English Hindoostan”.
Tumblr media
Sykes plans to rise politically and socially met with mixed success and when he died at his London house on 11th January 1804, none of the principal rooms at Basildon Park were completed. They didn’t get much love afterwards either, with the heir, also Francis Sykes, died a few weeks after inheriting the unfinished pile. Next in line was Sykes’ grandson, the five-year-old third baronet. As he grew up he showed no sign of financial sense, and pretty much bankrupted the family fortune by the time he was 14, an association with the Prince Regent not helping at all. In 1829 the estate was placed on the market, but it didn’t sell for a considerable period of time because Sykes would not lower the price below £100,000. As a result the house was often let out over the 9 year period it was on the market, finally being sold to the entrepreneur James Morrison for £3,000 under the £100,000 asking price. He completed work on the house and filled it with treasures, working with architect John Buonarotti Papworth to create what Morrison described as “a casket for my pictorial gems,” which included works by John Constable, J M W Turner and many Italian and Dutch old masters. Morrison died at Basildon on 30th October 1857.
Tumblr media
Morrison’s daughter, Ellen, inherited the house and live in it until her death in 1910. It was then inherited by her nephew, James Morrison, who made some improvements initially, including commissioning Edwin Lutyens to design workers’ cottages in the neighbouring villages. He didn;t live in the house though, and in 1914 it was requisitioned by the British Government and used as a convalescent home for injured soldiers. After that period, Morrison’s lavish lifestyle and three marriages meant he had in effect run out of money, and in 1929 he sold the house to property developer, George Ferdinando.
Tumblr media
He initially planned to sell the house to an American, marketing it for sale foe $1,000,000, which would include the cost of taking it down and re-erecting it in America. Luckily for us, he changed his mind, and converted the old sawmill at the top of the park into a house for himself and his wife. He also persuaded one of his sons to return from America with his family and to take up residence in the east wing. This son, Eric, did some renovation work, including returning fittings like the stair balustrade. Some of it they could not get back, however.
Tumblr media
In World War II Basildon was a billet for troops, and a training ground for tank and ground warfare was set up in the park. Damage was perhaps inevitable, with walls damaged by bridging units used on the river and massive holes left behind. Requisitioned by the Ministry of Works, it suffered further indignities when a caretaker stole the lead from the roofs.
Tumblr media
The ministry would not pay for most of the damage, and Ferdinando moved out, leaving Eric to deal with the house. When his father died, between inheritance tax and the repair costs, the house had to be sold. Despite its rather sorry state, the second Lord Iliffe, who lived in the area, bought it under persuasion from his wife, Lady Iliffe. Lord and Lady Iliffe spent 25 years restoring and refurnishing the house, buying fixtures and fittings from similar houses that were schedule for demolition, finding that 18th-century mahogany doors and marble fireplaces fitted in the spaces available perfectly in many instances. Having no children, the Iliffes donated the house and park to the National Trust in 1978, along with a large endowment for its upkeep.
It may not be the most spectacular architectural gem, and it’s not the home of any especially notable art works now, but its sheer survival makes it notable, given the state it had been reduced to when the Iliffes took it on. We actually started outside the house, nosing into the cafe and buying a cold drink each, needing to refresh ourselves after a two hour drive and the woodland walk to the house. Next to the cafe area (which is on the ground floor under the main house) was the original kitchen, in the north pavilion, away from the main house to avoid kitchen smells in the living quarters. Because Palladian buildings need symmetry, there thus had to be a second pavilion, in this instance a laundry. To avoid food having to be transported across an open area in all weathers, when Lady Iliffe was modernising the place she had a new state of the art kitchen installed on the piano nobile, but that was to be seem later in our visit.
Tumblr media
Before that we also walked around the rose garden, which apparently looks towards the River Avon (though you can’t actually see it), but sadly the roses were pretty much past their best after the summer we have been having. There are some statues in the garden, several of them headless after being used for target practice by American soldiers billeted in the house in WWII.
Tumblr media
After that we headed into the south pavilion, where there was an exhibition of “domestic” paintings, At Home with Art – Treasures of the Ford Collection, most of them the sort of thing that would have covered the walls in houses like this, produced more as a form of wall covering than art of great merit. It was interesting enough, though I doubt anyone apart from historians of the domestic would go out of their way to see it.
Tumblr media
The house, thankfully, is more interesting, and the volunteers in particular are very keen to offer any information you might want to make your visit more informative. In addition, it turned out that photography was permitted in the house with a couple of exceptions (the portraits of each of the Iliffes, which I was a bit baffled by, and what is known now as the Sutherland Room, formerly Lady Iliffe’s dressing room, which contains studies for Graham Sutherland’s tapestry “Christ in Glory” which decorates  Coventry Cathedral which I can understand).
Tumblr media
The hall contains a lovely ceiling which is actually original, unlike much else to be found in the house. It has of course been renovated. The hall also has its original Spanish mahogany doors, removed in the 1920s, but returned in 1954. It also contains one of a number of white marble fireplaces salvaged from Panton Hall prior to its demolition.
Tumblr media
Of the rooms I particularly liked the Octagon Drawing Room, which was used to display the owners’ best art works. It was restired and the walls covered in red felt, and renewed with works from Pompeo Batoni and Giambattista Pittoni. I loved the shape of the room, and the way the three windows provide fabulous views over the park and surrounding countryside.
Tumblr media
The Dining Room is a lovely space, decorated in a neoclassical style, and it too has had a somewhat chequered history. In 1845 it was redecorated by the architect David Brandon, who replaced the original paintings with polychrome depictions of Dante’s Divine Comedy. The walls were not much changed though, retaining their 18th-century plasterwork. In 1929, Ferdinando stripped the dining room of its panels, mirrors, fireplace and doors and sold them to Crowther’s, a firm of architectural antique dealers. They were sold to what was until last year the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York where they formed the Basildon Room. Lord and Lady Iliffe opted to redecorate it in a style similar to the original scheme by de Bruyn, using Carr’s surviving plasterwork, and a fireplace and doors salvaged from Panton Hall to return the room to its original neoclassical form.
Tumblr media
The second floor, with all the bedrooms, is also interesting with the Shell Room probably the most startling. Apparently, shell collecting was very much a thing for ladies at one stage, and they have been used to odd and slightly alarming effect to decorate pretty much any surface that didn’t need to be flat!
Tumblr media
The Bamboo Bedroom is rather fun too, the bed having apparently cost £5 in an auction.
Tumblr media
The rest of the room is of course decorated to suit.
Tumblr media
Also on display is a spectacular Coromandel screen, which is a 17th century Chinese lacquerware screen, unusually made for the Chinese domestic market not for export, and is one of a handful of such items now left in the UK. It would likely have arrived in the UK along with the newly popular pursuit of tea drinking in the 17th or 18th century,, and depicts a famous gathering of scholars in the garden of the Emperor’s son-in-law in the 1100s. Half of it is apparently missing, with just six panels remaining, but as it was not uncommon to cut down Coromandels to create other pieces of furniture, it’s more remarkable perhaps that half of it has survived. It’s even more remarkable that it’s still intact now, having been bought to hide a toilet door from guests by Lady Iliffe. It had started to deteriorate because of the conditions in the cloakroom, but is now on display and undergoing restoration. It’s really spectacular!
Tumblr media
I’d love to know what it would have looked like when complete! It was towards the end of the visit and we finished off by diving into the “new” kitchen I mentioned earlier. It’s very, very 1950s and we had some fund spotting things that were familiar to us. I would have happily made off with the picnic basket, mind. It was very stylish.
Tumblr media
We were about ready for some more refreshments, so an ice cream and a sit down were the order of the day (and I was very pleased to find a raspberry Magnum on sale). After that we took a wander into the Garden Room, which Lady Iliffe was in the process of converting to an “Indian” room to reflect the heritage of the house when she died. It’s lovely, but incomplete, and will presumably remain that way now.
Tumblr media
And then it was time to retrace our steps through the woods, back to the car, and on to our destination for the evening.

Okay sooo, my dad has never been a good father figure until i turned 16. I'm now 17 and have a car that i bought and i have the title and loan in my name. He is the co-signer. He also pays the insurance. I have a boyfriend and he doesn't like it when i have a boyfriend. He thinks i'm too young for one. My mom and him are divorced and i live with my mom. She doesn't care that i have a boyfriend and lets me go over to his house and go on dates, etc. He doesn't approve. So he threatened to take my car away if i don't be home when he says. My home is my moms house. I have more of a right to listen to her than i do my dad. She thinks so too. He says since he pays the insurance he should be able to take my car away if he wants to. I offered to pay my own but he won't let me because then he won't have anything to hold over my head. How can i get my own insurance and take it off his name without him knowing until its done?""

Due to the high car insurence for young/new driviver myself and me with the provisional liscense, it may be something that i cant afford. I have already asked this question on here but i got answers that were completely on the wrong side of what I'm looking for. I got told to go to different comparison sites to find cheap deals. Which is not what I want. The answers I was looking for was more along the lines of, lowering insurance by adding parents as named driver and so on. I did this with the car im looking to buy (Seat Ibiza 1.2 Group 2 insurance.) With my dad as a named driver on TPFT insurance, and i got quoted 1400 a year. I dealt with over 150 clients in my career and haven't found a single reason why someone would need permanent life insurance. All my clients have term insurance b/c I don't see why anyone would need life insurance forever. I believe someone needs life insurance at the time when they need it most, which is when they have little savings and lots of debt to pay (such as a mortgage). While I protect the client's income with term life insurance, I also help them save money for retirement by opening IRAs and/or variable annuities or tax-exempt mutual funds. Will my Car Insurance Go up?
ok so im 17, i got my lisence last week.. well like 6 days ago to be exact and we all know winter driving is alot more dangerous than regular driving.. anyways i was driving home from work, and none of the country roads were plowed, as always.. i turned the corner in my moms car (im insured) and the car slid and went right into the ditch at the side of the road, so i called my dad he came and helped me pull the car out, but during that process, the car got stuck up against a wooden street sign and well crushed or indented part of the car right behind right side wheel. and once we finally got the car out, we noticed the alignment of the back axel was completely f**ked. so i drove it home very slowly, cause it was driving horrible from that.. just wondering if we report this to our insurance company what will happen? will my insurance go up? it was a complete accident and no police were involved. i dont know how much the damages will cost but im sure its not too cheap.. maybe a complete writeoff? the car was bought for 10000$ like 4 or 5 years ago. damages are: rear axel and front by right tire. can anyone reply? id just like to get this off my back i dont see how it can be my fault, the city did not have the roads properly plowed.. i know i cant blame it on that but it really was an accident i dont know how i can make it up to my parents, i work part time and goto hgihschool i dont make nearly enough money to pay for the damages they want me to.""

How do I fight an insurance company over biased eyewitness testimony?
I was driving in a parking lot with wide lanes and perpendicular spaces when another driver backed out into my passenger side door. The other driver claimed that I was driving too fast and her insurance company is only willing to accept 75% liability for the accident, because of her statements and those of her friends. I don't have any witnesses of my own, but it seems rather unjust that they can base their decision on obviously biased witnesses. Neither the physical nor the circumstantial evidence supports their claims. I've written letters to the insurance company in response to their letter to me, but they haven't replied or made any effort to address my concerns. How do I fight them? This occurred in California.""
How can I fight to get more money out of my car insurance company?
We bought a 2011 Lancer on Dec 8th 2010. On Dec 27th 2010, we slid off the road in a blizzard, but the car was not damaged AT ALL. The car was parked and only had our pets and christmas gifts from the holidays. An idiot speeding in a snow storm made a b-line into our car. Both ours and their insurance determined the car totaled and the other driver was found at fault by his insurance company. We did have GAP coverage (which will NEVER happen again). The car was 19 days owned and we believe we should get MSRP for our car. Does anyone know if this is reasonable? I think we pay so much every month and therefore are entitled to be in the same position financially as we were before the accident. (Also, we had stuff : a rifle, our pets, their crate that got damaged. We were wondering if that and the out-of-pocket rental car expenses should be covered... seeing that it was in direct relation to the car accident, that was his fault.)""
How should health insurance companies thank Obama?
I just found out that my health insurance, which used to have a $500.00 deductible, will now be MORE expensive and will now come with a 5,000.00 deductible!! Which means, in order to see any benefit at all, I have to fork over $7,000.00 of MY OWN MONEY!! Which basically means, I have no health insurance now yet I still have to pay for it because it is now the law! If I don't, I get garnished. Asking around, I have learned that this is happening to everybody. So instead of getting MORE people covered by health care, Obamacare is getting millions of people effectively kicked off! But because of the law, we still have to pay the insurance companies, while they are free to raise the deductible to the point where their only purpose is to sit back and collect our money. Great. So I think the insurance companies should fork over a big, fat billion dollars to Obama for the all the cash he sent them!""

I originally had State Farm and was paying $232 for a Hyndai Tiburon, had a traffic accident for, Improper Lane Change, the other person did not file a claim, had to spend $500 to get my car fixed and $89 on municipal court fees. I was told that the incident, since I paid it in full and did not receive probation would not be held on my license, however it did make my insurance go up to $302, because of the deduct able, very understandable. This was in Ga. I moved to Ok. I looked at new insurance here and found one with Mercury Auto Insurance through a 3rd party company and received a quote for full coverage at $232 a month, so back down to normal price. They ran my license and everything, everything was fine, I even told them about the accident and they said that it would not change rates. Well, it did. I got my first statement and my bill was $314! I called up to the 3rd party company and they said that the insurance company charged my Improper Lane Change, as an Erratic Improper Lane Change, and as such it was classified as a traffic accident on my license and that's what made it go up. She said she would call me back, but she never did and I have been working so much, I haven't had a chance to call back. Car insurance with teenagers.?
My mom and I have been checking around for cars to buy because I have a scholarship and one college class right now, and I need the transportation so that I can go to study sessions for the college class, and to the meetings for my scholarship. We really don't have a lot of money. I work but only on Saturday because of school. My mom has Progressive right now and she checked how much it would be to have me and a new car on the insurance and it is a whopping $500 a month (her, her truck, me, and my car included).. We need an insurance company that isn't going to cost us a 1/4 of our income. At first we were looking at older cars under $2500. Then my mom was thinking it would be better to get me a new car with good gas mileage so she wouldn't have to worry about me being safe and not breaking down on the side of the road... But we can afford a new car, not with our down payment. The monthly payments are too high. So now we are going back to the older cars, and if we have a fully paid for vehicle, I am sure the insurance won't be as high. But here it, I am 16 years old, took driver's ed and have an insurance waiver that is supposed to bring the insurance down 10%. I also have good grades, a scholarship, a job, etc.. These things should look good to the insurance and bring the cost down.. I am safe driver as well.. Not driving far daily at all. Basically back and forth from school and to those meetings and study sessions every now and then. Any suggestions as to what car to look for and what insurace company we should go with? Toronto, Ont. - April 2, 2018
Tumblr media
Toronto, the city I always passed by but never really stayed very long in. As I have said before the only real memories I have of this cit was always passing through in Pearson or when I was a kid when my dad and uncle took me to the zoo and I apparently got lost for much of the day till they found me at a playground there. All I remember is the playground.
I was stranded here in January for a night and spent 90 minutes downtown feeling like wow there are lots of stuff I would like to explore here if only had more time. Thankfully I knew I had a 5 day super long weekend coming during Easterand felt this was a good time to explore my home country’s biggest and most well known city; Toronto.
So the trip is over and I am back in Pearson at the same bar I wrote my last entry waiting for the same plane to take me out.
The title of this entry should be “The Good and Bad Mistakes of Toronto” but making mistakes and learning about how a city rolls is part of the education of life that I like going through but there are times where I feel some things are needlessly confusing, like Pearson but I have come t o realize Pearson and the city it inhabits are similar. Both are the biggest and both are confusing to navigate.
Let’s start from the top, in the last episode you listen to me ramble on as I just got to the airport from a great concert but was drunk, sleep but also on a sugar high the beer was giving me so I was crashing and burning from too much beer and not sleeping.
I finally got on the plane and purposely shut my eyes hoping to sleep. Whether I did or not I have no idea because I don’t feel like I did but I do know by the time I touched Pearson I was awake enough to function.
I took the train to Weston where my airbnb home was and got there within 5 min which was impressive. In fact walking from Weston station to the house took longer and it was starting to rain worse. I met my host and she was nice, the room was nice too. It was everything I needed; clean, warm and quiet. Aft er saying my hellos and dropping off my stuff I walked back to the train station. Or what I thought was the right train station. This is where the education in Toronto’s transit system began.
I went to the ticket station in hopes of buying a presto pass. For those who d not know what that is it is a card you use to use transit. Think London’s card which I can’t remember (clam card? Don’t know why I think clam) or the compass card in Vancouver where you basically put money into that card and where you go and how you use it takes money out of that card unless. You have a month pass or whatever.
They did not have a presto card dispenser which was annoying to me but then it asked me for my destination and that confused me because I didn’t think that mattered. I just wanted a day pass so I could go anywhere and not have to worry about it for the day but they wanted the destination first so I did Weston to union day pass for 11.50, a bit pricey but I felt given the price if I fucked up I could use its price to argue I have paid more than enough for to it. Either way this was my second mistake.
So I went to the train track and went I looked up I thought it said union train arriving and it did though the train looked different from the last, regardless I got on it. That was my third mistake.
I got on the train and started to notice that it was going further west than east which was where I wanted to go so I thought I better get off then take a train back to try again, mistake number four.
I get off in Ebocoke North or whatever noticing that the train track only goes one way and not east…….fuck. With the help of the inconsistent trip planner from two websites I took another train to Milton where there was going to be a bus that takes on straight downtown. Thankfully I checked with someone at the ticket counter or I would have been stranded in Milton. apparently I bought the wrong kind of ticket and took the wrong train but using my tourist card she gave me a free ticket to downtown because in all honesty I did pay to go downtown I just went the wrong way about it.
I got on that bus and it took a full hour to get there. By the time I got there the weather was the kind of weather I hate the most; cold rain and hard wind. Plus it was pitch black out and 7pm so everything was closed but I didn’t care I wanted to make the most of the two hours it took to get downtown. I wound up going to the Easton’s Center.
Eatons Center is a place I always heard of but never been to, I even watched a movie that was set there not to long ago and it was funky seeing it now in 2018 after seeing how it was in 1978. I spent the next hour looking for something cheap but healthy to eat and was thwarted as the vegan area was closed. I started to realize how expensive everything was and came to realize everything was expensive, even the beer which was basically 7 bucks and up a ‘pint’. I decided to screw trying to f Indus one thing good to eat and went to shopper’s drug mart and bought two boxes of biscuits and 1 box of crackers for the same price and ate them on my way to Union station where I spent another hour trying to find the UP Express because by that point I realized that there was a difference between UP and Go.
Go seemed to be the train system that connected much of greater Toronto together while UP express was a express train from Pearson to downtown. That being said I assumed I already paid to have a day pass from Weston to Union they should respect the ticket g ping back. That became my final mistake.
Thankfully l Ike then and many times during my trip the ticket people were more than understanding of my confusion of the train system and let me go but told me no there is a d ifferent between UP and GO and if I want o use UP I need a UP ticket unless I have a presto card. I got back to my home base soaked from rain and bitter from my experience with the transit. I fell asleep pretty easily since I hadn’t had a full head of sleep since 5am Wednesday.
Friday I woke up to a beautiful day and completely refreshed and decided to take the city on. I bought another overpriced ticket to downtown and when I got to Union station I bought a presto pass and put 50 bucks on it assuming that it should be enough to last me for the rest of the trip only to find out it would only last me for the next three days and I barely ever used the fucking card.
Anyways I walked all around downtown Jayne hatting my way through downtown realizing there was enough statues to Jayne hat to last my monthly fb profile pictures for the next year or so. I then went to the hockey hall of fame which was fun and affordable which surprised me because everything else about this city was overpriced. I explored the rest of downtown before I went to the Air Canada Center to see my first lacrosse game. Paid 20 dollars for beer which I immediately regretted but did not regret seeing the game. I never played the game before and I know as a kid I would not have liked it but I definitely like it now and will definitely look into watching more games now when I go back to Vancouver.
Tumblr media
Saturday was a bit more of a mixed bag, I traveled to downtown and got to see Maple Leaf Gardens or what was left of it and went on to do what I normally do in a city I want to explore and that is to see the vegan eats and vinyls stores because that is usually where the non tourists and rich people are. That is where one often sees the real character of the city in or at least how I have noticed it and is was right. My review of a Toronto as people is that they are nice people, much more open and social than Vancouverites but their sense of cleanliness is lacking. In Weston and downtown the city has lots of trash, particularly in recycleable stuff. I wonder if people recycle here because given the amount of bottles and cans I seen laying all over the place in the city I don’t think they do.
Saturday was for full on exploration the way I like to explore it; vegan restaurants and record stores. I stopped off at this place called The Grasshopper and had mushroom soup and a mushroom bowl (yes I like mushrooms). Then I tried to hit every record shop in the area. Queen Street was supposed to be Toronto’s Commercial Drive but I wound up figuring out or at least believing in my mind that Spadina Ave is was Toronto’s Commercial Drive. On that street I found a kick ass classic video game store and two record stores, one being Sonic Boom.
Sonic Boom was a store I probably could have spent an entire day in, basically a hipster HMV. They sold CDs, DVDs, vinyl and all sorts of stuff that suit my fancy. I did wind up spending and hour there looking for stuff but not quite as hard as I wanted to. The day was getting long and there were two more places I wanted to go.
I went down to Queen Street and felt it was time to use the transit again and took the street car/light rail to go to the last record store I wanted to called Stained Class. Apparently it was a record store with just metal music because the city barely had much metal stores and I would have to agree I went to 4 record stores downtown and their metal selection was fairly weak. This store was supposed to be at the end of the street. I assumed that the transit would save me 15 minutes but that is when I realized that this is Toronto and this city is huge. That trip I thought would be 10 min wound up being 30 minutes till I wound up where it was to be. The problem was it no longer was there anymore, google lied again. I did find an old action figure store there and the 10 year old in me was beyond tempted to buy back some of the action figures I beloved as a child they didn’t last my childhood but the 33 year old me pulled me back and asked what would I do with a Ricktor from X Force or Colossus from X Men now? 33 year old Corey was right and as soon as I got outside it started pissing down rain. I thought well I guess there is only one more place left to go.
On my way there I decided to stop off at the liquor store to see the beer selection as I was coming to realize that there wasn’t many breweries in the city and none of the are easy to go to so I assumed well these government stores should sell Ontario beer should they?
Not really maybe 3 breweries then breweries from other places, it was pretty pathetic. Mind you I know I got to set my expectations back, I know Vancouver is the hot bed for beer in Canada but my god this liquor store had next to nothing I wanted to try. I left with a can from Side Launch which wound up not being half bad honestly.
However I was saving that beer for later because there was a brewery in the neighbourhood that had at least 3 wheat beers on tap from what i heard. The place was called Duggan’s Brewery. On their website it said it was open at 4 pm and I got there at 4:30. I discovered they were renovating but their basement bar was still open so I went down there. Felt very weird, felt like I was going into a shady crack dealers room. I opened the door and no one but one guy was there who immediate kicked me out telling me they were open at 5pm. I apologized and thought ok I will come back in 30 min. There was a vegan restaurant across the street named Doomie’s. That was a very interesting place, they said they were vegan but all the food looked exactly like it wasn’t. I had a chicken burger and when I looked at it it looked like a chicken burger. I ate it and it takes for the most part like a chicken burger. I wanted to ask the stupid question as to whether it was actual chicken or not but I took their word for their sign saying they are a vegan place. If so compliments to the shelf for making a vegan chicken burger taste better than an actual chicken burger. I had the same beer I bought a can of and by the time I was done it was 5:30 so I felt well Duggan’s has to be open now. I went there and the door was locked. That pissed me off.
Only reason why I went down Queens was for Stained Class and Duggan’s only to find one didn’t exist and they other didn’t want to be open. So I went into the Electic Mud BBQ behind them and had my beer there. It was very over priced but I came to expect that from Toronto that their beers are 7 bucks and up. I had their home brewed beer and the others they had and none of them really suited my fancy. The staff were nice though, I felt like I should have just gone here first. After having one of everything and been very disappointed with all of them except the service I left for the road to it raining even worse. Got on the light rail and decided to head home bummed. When I got off at Spadina I remembered that I saw a theatre int he are and relaxed the Ready Player One came out recently and decided to go see it and I am glad I did because it was a good movie. Or at least a good movie to cheer one up. By the time I got out i was much sober and much happier and funny enough the rain ended. Came to realize that the weather and my mood do seem to match with this city. While the weather was good I had had a good time, shitty weather meant shitty time. I got back and had the can of beer then fell asleep.
Tumblr media
Sunday was going to be my last full day in Toronto. I had a few plans for that day, first was to go see my first baseball game at the Skydome, then maybe check out another record store and then end the day at the CN Tower. I arrived at the Skydome and decided to eat a veggie dog which tasted very much like a hot dog so......that weirded me out I really hope they weren’t fucking with me there. I am not a hard core vegetarian but if they and Doomie’s fucked me there that just further supplants why I would never want to come back to Toronto again. I went into the SkyDome and it was trip. I always wanted to go be in the SkyDome. It’s called Roger Centre but fuck that lame ass name it will always be the SkyDome to me.

There was a time when wrestling was the most important thing in my life. More important than movies, music, travel, doniars, everything outside of my parents of course. From age 6 till around 18 or 19 years old if you asked me what I really wanted to be it was to be a pro wrestler. What inspired a kid to want to be a wrestler?
Me and my dad every Tuesday would go to our video store to rent movies. My dad would pick up new movies while I often scoured the big almost warehouse sized (to a kid) building full of VHS tapes looking for something that interested me. I often stuck to the kids section but I decided to venture off till I found the sports section and noticed all the wrestling tapes. I was drawn to the Ultimate Warrior, he looked completely different from everyone else and he was going against Hulk whom I vaguely knew but not well enough, I always liked going against the grain or people who did. I picked up Wrestlemania 6 and watched that PPV, it just so happened to be set at SkyDome. The entire show was fun and I liked most of the matches but it was the main even that got this 6 year old. Everyone either walked or took a mini tram to the ring, Ultimate Warrior ran. It may not seem like much but to a kid like me I loved it because again it set him apart from everyone else. Then he beat Hulk (yes I know it is ‘fake’ and matches are predetermined) and that is when I became a wrestling fan. Seeing how all those people cheering Warrior, how he reacted and all the pageantry and all that stuff. I remember the big video screen showing him shaking the ropes. When I got to see that big screen I immediately thought of Warrior (RIP).
Tumblr media
So from 6 to 19 I strived to that as best as I could which was feeble with a terrible diet.....I will save you the excuse ridden story but lets just say if I was in the shape at 18 that I am now I probably would have actually went to Calgary to be a wrestler or try my hand in it. Wrestlemania 18 is my favourite Wrestlemania and where was that one? I am sure you guessed right, watching that show extended my desire to be a pro wrestler for at least another year till wrestling itself bore me and I came to realize even though I had alot of muscle I didn’t have the pain threshold and I was a pretty fat kid. When I watch that video from above as much as it hypes me it does sort of depress me that I never tried but in the end I know I would not have survived, at least that version of me.
The game itself was boring as fuck. I never cared for baseball at any point in my life. Whenever I saw a bit of it on TV it always looked boring as hell but many people who love the game told me to see it live so I decided to and found it to be even more boring. The only thing exciting about the game was the grand slam at the end.
youtube
After the game I decided to have another vegan lunch and needed to charge my phone. So I went to this place called Fresh on Spadina which had no place for me to charge my phone. I had carrot soup and a bean burrito. That is when I got a call from WestJet. Given my recent experience with Westjet this year if you could see my face it was one of dread. Last time they called me it was to tell me my flight was cancelled and pushed back 2 days. This time it wasn’t quite like that, it was cancelled but pushed back 5 hours. That wasn’t going to do for me because I really didn’t want to get back to Vancouver at midnight and only have 3 hours of sleep before waking up. I called to be on the 2 pm flight. So the thought of going to a museum in the morning before leaving was out of the question. Being it was Easter Sunday and everything was practically closed there was only one place still open for me to go to; CN Tower.
Tumblr media
CN Tower is probably one of the things many people associate with Canada, as a child I did too when I vaguely knew of my own country. It seems so strange that I got to see the Eiffel Tower before I got to see the CN Tower. I will say though the Eiffel Tower felt more ominous (in a good way) than CN Tower. When in Paris it felt like no matter where you were you could always spot it while in Toronto not so much. Mind you Toronto has more sky scrappers and is far more modern than Paris is but still, it doesn’t look as big as Eiffel is. Whether it is or not I am too lazy to check the internet for. However going up it made it feel a hell of a lot more taller.
I doubled stepped up Effiel, this I think would have killed me. The look down made my stomach twist. I don’t think the whole trip up was worth 50 dollars, it is clearly a tourist money grab but I feel that was my Toronto trip. It was an excuse to burn money.
On my way back to Union station that I finally figured out how to get to I got some late food and a breakfast for the next day and said my goodbyes to downtown. I probably wont see it from ground level again for a long time.
So that was my trip, as you can tell I started writing this on he 2nd but here it is 8 days later and I just finished it. I had alot of work to do, a bike to get fixed, groceries and all sorts of shit. A week after the trip my thoughts are more or less the same. I regret going but in the end I would not have known it would have been if I never went so I rack it up to a educational experience. I dont need to go to Toronto anymore outside of being in Pearson which in of itself is enough for me and I dont like Pearson.
What is next on my trip taking? Well Australia and Newfoundland (of course) will happen this year. I can only hope to find affordable flights to Whitehorse and Yellowknife between now and fall. I wont have 5 days to spend in Whitehorse or Yellowknife but given the size of those cities (compared to Vancouver or Toronto I dont know if one could call them cities)it should only take me a weekend to see them. It is a matte of sucking it up dishing 600 dollars a shot to see it. is 600 dollars really worth Jayne hatting it’s statues. I would like to meet more people here but then that is where doing couch surfing comes in. Something to think about. Till next time happy travels, shazbot nano nano.

"Car accident, Insurance, How does it work?
I was in a car accident yesterday and it was deemed not my fault. They guy rammed me with a truck, while i was driving a car. My whole back end was destroyed and the estimate at a local dealership came out to about 6000 dollars. The dealership said that their might be some internal damage to the frame that they can't see but if it is the frame, can i ask the other guys insurance, the one paying for rental, coverage, etc, to give me market value of my car, if it is the frame, My cars value is $18,125. Also i have a slight neck pain from the whiplash, Do I tell his insurance about this?

So here is what I need to know, and please no stupid insurance companies trying to solicit. 1. Who do I call in Ga. and have them dismiss those charges on my license and if they can't, how do I go about filing a lawsuit for illegal allegations after trial? 2. Auto Insurance Quotes?
Where is the best place to buy auto insurance online?
Auto insurance question.?
My step father auto was struck in th readend by a teen the other day. Now his car is not worth much. Maybe 1500 dollars. The 2 body shops gave repair estiments at 2700 and 4300. Now as this is his personnel car and gets 45 miles to the gallon you can understand why he wants to keep using it to get to work. From a legal standpoint, as this is a personnel auto and the other driver is required to carry general libility to cover damage to aother peoples autos. Can a insurance company require him to just settle for the 1,500 dollar value of the car. Or total the car. Or do they have some kind of loop hole. How is it they can require a third party to settle on there terms? As he is not the orginator of the policy, he did not enter into a contract with the insurance provider. Can he just go get it fixed and send them the bill or have the repair compnay send it to the insurance compnay?""

Got a ticket for 30 over and have American Fam. Ins. 1st speeding ticket. Any insight on rate increase?
Aim a 23 year old male & this is my first ticket for speeding technically (I got a ticket 6 years ago for speeding but it was dismissed in court). I also totaled a car 7 years ago but that seems to be irrelevant now (I would think). I was sighted for going 75 MPH in a 45 MPH on interstate 670 in Columbus, Ohio (45 due to construction not in progress so fine was not doubled). The office stated to me that the traffic flow was moving well above the posted speed limit however I was moving a bit faster than the flow. My first question is should I take this to court and fight it (also hope the officer does not show) If the traffic flow was moving considerably over the posted limit then why wasnt any of the people ahead of my pulled over? Does anyone think this will stand in court or do you think the fact that I was going 30 over pretty much kill my defense? Also (since I believe I will have to pay) how much do you think my insurance rates will increase? Like I said I am a 23 year old male with 1 prior speeding ticket that was dismissed in court 6 years ago, totaled a car 7 years ago and received a ticket almost 3 years ago for peeling and squealing (which was BS). Any insight is helpful and thank you all for taking time to read my post and respond it means a lot.""

Early in January 1999 my husband learned he needed to have his right shoulder replaced. He was 45 years old, and arthritis meant he'd already undergone two hip replacements. The bad news was there was no surgeon in Zimbabwe qualified to tackle this procedure, so we had to travel outside the country for the operation. The good news was that one of the world's top shoulder specialists lived in Cape Town, a city we'd heard so much about from people who'd been there. At that time Zimbabwe was still six months away from it's descent into the tragedy it is today, so it was easy to make the appointment with the surgeon, arrange the expenses with our medical aid company, book the air tickets and contact a friend who'd been transferred there a few years earlier to request accommodation. It took six weeks to get everything arranged, and early in March we boarded the flight from Harare to Johannesburg, and then on to Cape Town.
Our friend Pete was waiting for us at the airport. After we'd collected our luggage we drove to his house. The drive along the highway from the Airport to Cape Town was our introduction to the city we'd be calling home for the next ten days. The highway was in excellent condition, and ran through areas of scrub that flowed away the verges of the road towards distant mountains. However ten minutes later we came across shanty towns that had been erected next to the highway.
They were a shabby reminder than ten years after gaining independence the contrast between the rich and poor has perhaps worsened. The shacks making up the shanty towns were made of every kind of material known to man - corrugated iron sheets and rusty metal sheets combined with wood, cardboard and wire to form an extremely uncomfortable shelter than a family called home. Even more appalling was the fact that many of the shanty houses had run wires to the overhead power lines. This dangerous link was apparently sanctioned by the electricity board - Pete told us that the municipality and the government were failing to keep pace with the demand for houses for the poorer members of society, and preferred to leave the shanty towns intact! A refuse collection service run by the local authority was operating to help keep the shanty towns habitable. We saw a number of shanty towns along the main highways during our stay in Cape Town.
Pete lives in a suburb called Somerset West, and his home was a practical and extremely modern cluster home in a compound of about 30 residences. This style of living is very popular in South Africa, because of security and reduced overheads. The complexes are very well maintained because each owner contributes towards the upkeep and maintenance of the complex. Some complexes offer communal playgrounds for all the resident children, tennis courts and swimming pools. Owners are usually able to keep pets too, because each house has its own private garden. It's also a perfect way to live in Africa if one needs to travel or go on holiday - neighbours will keep an eye on the house while you are away. My husband and I were so impressed with this way of living that the following year we bought into a cluster complex my then employers were marketing in Harare. When we sold our house in 2003 we reinvested the money in a second cluster home. If one wants to live in Africa security is very important, and a cluster home complex offers the best level of security for residences.
Pete's a bachelor, so that night he prepared a barbecue in his Weber braai unit. His girlfriend Pat came round to help with the cooking, and we had a wonderful evening. The view from Pete's house was superb. Somerset West is built on a hill overlooking the city, and the view from his verandah offered the classic Cape Town view - the sprawling city at the foot of majestic Table Mountain, the lighthouse and the Atlantic Ocean. His house had three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a large living room, state of the art kitchen and outside laundry/storeroom. He told us he spends most of his time on his verandah or in his garden.
The next morning we had our appointment with the surgeon, who was a Greek Zimbabwean - Basil Vrettos. After his examination and x-rays he booked us into a private clinic, scheduling the operation for 8.00 the following morning. When we asked husband should go to hospital that evening, Mr Vrettos told us to rather book in at 6.00 the following morning, urging us to spend the day relaxing and walking around Cape Town. He told the operation would take four hours, and that the hospital stay would be just three days! We were delighted. Pete had taken leave to be with us during our stay, so the three of us headed into the city.
Although Cape Town is a city, it's more organized and environmentally friendly than Johannesburg, and as a result doesn't sprawl in all directions. Driving into town Table Mountain was clearly visible, and to welcome us that morning it was wearing what locals call The Tablecloth. Although this is simply the white cloud blown over the mountain when a south easterly wind blows, it's very impressive, and there's a wonderful tale that has evolved around this phenomenon. A less famous mountain near Table Mountain is called Devil's Peak, and it's claimed that a pirate called Van Hunks was living out his days on the slopes of this mountain. One day he met a stranger, who challenged him to a smoking contest. Van Hunks, who was extremely partial to his pipe accepted the challenge, and the tow men spent several days puffing away on their pipes. As the smoke clouds gathered a wind blew them down over Cape Town. Van Hunks won the contest, and the defeated stranger revealed himself to be the Devil. This is how Devil's Peak got its name, and the cloud of smoke became known as the tablecloth.
Back to our itinerary. We drove to the Victoria and Albert Waterfront, one of Cape Town's most popular tourist attractions. We walked towards the restaurant area, and saw some cape fur seals frolicking around one of the piers. They were so interesting to watch, and seemed to have no fear of the boats and the noise in this very developed section of the harbour. We found a wonderful restaurant right next to the sea, and ate an excellent lunch of calamari, prawns and French friends all washed down with beer and wine. We then walked off our lunch, window shopping in some of the 400 stores that make up the waterfront. We also walked around the craft market and visited the museum before venturing into the Two Oceans Oceanarium, so named because two oceans meet at Cape Town - the icy cold Atlantic Ocean and the warm, tropical Indian Ocean. Later we drove along the coast and stopped at the point where the oceans meet. One would expect to see a distinct change or some indication that designates this meeting point, but there was nothing apart from a wonderful view across the blue ocean waves.
The oceanarium offers a unique display of all marine life. We stood in awe, watching the endangered African Penguins mingling with Rockhopper Penguins and Oystercatchers in a room designed to perfectly mimic their natural habitat - even their water is piped in directly from the sea. There's also a massive room where visitors look down upon a colony of seas. This room is actually part of the sea, and contains massive barnacle crusted rocks and sandy beaches complete with sea shells. The most exciting moment for me was walking through a clear Perspex tunnel, while sharks and other massive sea species glide silently and stealthily around you. You can watch the sharks being fed while standing in this tunnel, giving you the rather alarming impression that you're in the sea with them as they eat. We were also able to handle starfish and sea urchins - the oceanarium is renowned for educating children about their natural world, so they have a lot of conducted tours for school parties. I will never forget being told that an octopus is actually an incredibly intelligent creature, and many of the octopi in the oceanarium recognize staff members! Hasn't stopped me from eating them!
The following morning I dropped my husband off at the hospital, and spent the next couple of days driving between Somerset West and the hospital. The operation went very well, and the nursing care was excellent. My husband had his shoulder capped rather than replaced, because Mr Vrettos said the damage from the arthritis didn't warrant removal of the shoulder bone. Three days later he was discharged from hospital, the only evidence of his ordeal being the sling on his left arm. To celebrate we decided to visit Table Mountain.
Towering one kilometre above the city, Table Mountain is accessed via cable car, and the journey to the top is spectacular. The car rotates 360 degrees all the way up, affording occupants a unique view of Cape Town. More than 600,000 people travel to the top of Table Mountain every year. Several hikes are available for those fit and energetic enough to climb the mountain - but it takes at least six hours. The top of the mountain is three kilometres long with a lot of clearly signposted natural pathways for visitors to follow. The vegetation is incredible; there are more than 250 different kinds of daisies as well as several plant species that survive and thrive in the unique ecosystem of Table Mountain. There's a rare wild orchid and the silver tree, which produces the silver protea. The animal life on Table Mountain is varied, including baboons, porcupines and the Table Mountain Ghost Frog. We didn't see any of these animals, but I did loose my heart to a creature called a rock dassie. It looks like a rabbit-sized guinea pig, and amazingly its closest relative is the elephant. They're incredibly tame, and have no fear of people. I really wanted to take one home, but husband ignored my rather pathetic pleas! Table Mountain may be one of Africa's most popular tourist destinations, but it's still a relatively natural site. There one restaurant on the summit as well as a post office where mail is sent bearing the Table Mountain postmark. At the foot of the mountain is a souvenir shop, and I bought a little fridge magnet in the shape of a wine bottle filled with tiny stones from Table Mountain. Today that magnet sits on my fridge door here in Greece.
I should mention a couple of other mountains here. Signal Hill is a relatively flat topped hill with a complete view of the city and the ocean. There's a cannon on this hill that is a legacy of the British control over the Cape at the end of the 19th century. Originally the cannons were fired to announce the sighting of a ship. Ship sailing to India from Britain would stop over in Cape Town to restock their supplies before continuing their voyage. Today the cannons are fired at noon every day - except Sundays and public holidays. Another name for Signal Hill is the Lion's Rump. This is because it's actually a natural extension of a mountain called Leeukop, an Afrikaans name meaning Lion's Head. From a certain viewpoint this mountain does indeed resemble a lion's head.
We visited the largest bird sanctuary in Africa, the World of Birds. Home to more than 3000 species of birds visitors walk through the enormous aviaries and experience what it would be like to see these birds in the wild. I recall an enormous hornbill with an affinity for visitors - he would sit on his thick perch calling people to scratch his head. He was at least the height of my torso, and very brightly feathered with an alarmingly large curved beak. The birdlife included eagles, swans, herons, guinea fowl, flamingos and a variety of rare birds from all over the world. World of Birds cares for injured birds, and is a breeding centre for endangered species. The centre is also home to a number of different mammals, and we watched meerkats, squirrels, mongooses, foxes, genet cats and a huge tortoise relaxing in large, very comfortable enclosures. I cannot bear the sight of caged animals, so for me walking through the aviaries and animal enclosures was like being in the wild bush.
No trip to Cape Town is complete without a visit to one of the region's wineries. South African wine is world famous, and the Cape's vineyards are well wroth seeing. A number of wine routes are available, but we don't really being part of a crowd, and because we had an excellent guide in the shape of Pete we took our own route through the Paarl and Constantia districts. We stopped at two excellent wineries. The first one we sat on the verandah of a gracious, old Dutch Gable-style house complimenting glasses of wine with an assortment of delicious cheeses. The second vineyard was called Meerlust, and the reason I remember the name is because of the setting for our wine tasting. They seated us at a gnarled Rhodesian teak table in the wine cellar. Surrounded by hundred of massive kegs of wine we tasted some truly superb merlots, cabernet sauvignon, pinotage and chardonnay. There was also an excellent rose and some fine port. Pete, husband and I bought several bottles to take home with us. On our way back down the winding leafy roads we stopped at a restaurant that was originally a station master's office. The old building, complete with railway track, was a real piece of vintage memorabilia to the Cape's rich and varied history.
That evening we went to watch the first international cricket match at Paarl. Sri Lanka was beaten by South Africa in front of 9,000 spectators. A number of players in both teams are still active in today's cricketing world - Muralitharan, Kallis, Gibbs and Boje are names I remember. It was a day night game, meaning the second innings was played under floodlights and started at about 8.30 pm. There was a lunar eclipse that night - I'd never seen one before, and it was quite impressive, even when viewed without binoculars. Sitting on the grass, drinking wine and eating sausages and syrupy sweet koeksisters (a plaited pastry that is fried and then dipped in syrup) while watching an international cricket game under the stars... even if one isn't a cricket fan it's a special experience.
My one regret is that we didn't get a chance to visit Robben Island. Once used as a leper colony the island is 12 kilometres off the cost, and clearly visible from Table Mountain. During the 19th century Robben Island claimed many ships laden with treasures, and coins have been washed ashore from the shipwrecks. In the latter part of the 20th century Robben Island was notorious as a prison, and one of its most famous inmates was Nelson Mandela, who spent 27 years in a cell on the island.
We left Cape Town a couple of days later after husband had got the all clear from Dr Vrettos. Having been born and brought up in Zimbabwe I've visited several cities in South Africa. Cape Town is absolutely unique, and it's a city that I would dearly love to call home one day. The combination of the sea and the mountains with the wonderful history make Cape Town a varied and interesting place to visit. Cape Town is completely different to other South African cities like Durban, Johannesburg and Pretoria because it's a truly international city. People from all over the world have chosen to make their homes there. The original settlers of the Cape include the Dutch, the French and the British, all of whom have left their own mark on this wonderful city. We have friends who live in Johannesburg, and they tell us they're there for the money (Johannesburg is the financial hub of South Africa). Johannesburg residents complain that the people from Cape Town are very laid back because their lives are less stressful. I would agree with that supposition, and I'd go so far as to say I'd choose quality of life over quantity any day. Cape Town is a magnificent vibrant city.
