Sweet man! Den dad! Guy who gets washed in by a big flood and lands smack in the middle of a messy breakup before being getting his hardass nightmare dad-in-law assigned as a mentor!

In cleaning up the Kin of your Kin prophecy and reworking the plot of Po3 and OotS, I made it so Ivypool is now the daughter of Lionblaze and Cinderheart, and secretly the child of Jayfeather and Poppyfrost! I always found the sheer amount of kids Canon!Lionblaze has to be pretty ridiculous, since it does nothing with those relationships and makes half of ThunderClan descended from Firestar in the process.

So, instead, the tree has been overhauled and BB!Fernsong is an ex-kittypet. The Firekin family is traced exclusively through Dovewing, Ivypool, and Hollylark.

And BOY does he enter in a doozy! ThunderClan's Tempest replaces Bramblestar's Storm, now full of different perspectives as ThunderClan recovers from the Battle of the True Eclipse. Fiddles finds himself drawn to the Clan as a refugee, accidentally becoming the final straw that breaks the camel's back in Ivypool's toxic relationship with Blossomfall.

(Note: At the time, Blossomfall has a Dishonor Title, Shredbloom, for her involvement in the Dark Forest. Shredbloom = Blossomfall.)

When he finally has the chance to return home, he realizes that Clan life offers him something Kittypet life never quite did; Community. While he's not much of a hunter or a fighter, he comes to feel needed and fulfilled by the connections he makes to lots of cats within ThunderClan.

In ThunderClan's Tempest, he came from the same home as Minty. The family couldn't evacuate them, because they ran and hid out of fear.

She was his mate a few times, but in the way that some kittypets of the same house are. Purebreds. They'd had litters that the humans made sure were well cared-for, brought to new homes at six months.

They had a sort of love more out of convenience and safety than passion.

When he was found by ThunderClan, they brought him back to their base in the caves, and Daisy was able to help break the language barrier.

Ivypool, still destroyed from seeing her Dark Forest mentor Hawkfrost make a stand against his father and "die," started helping Daisy out with them. At first, she just needed to feel useful.

She had been in a relationship with Blossomfall (Shredbloom at the time) for a long time, at this point, and had even begged her to stop during the final wave of the BOTTE.

In a way, Ivypool felt like she needed to "save" someone from the Dark Forest, and for a long time after, she felt like she needed to save Blossomfall from her own pain.

But it was incredibly toxic. Blossomfall was controlling, Ivypool was touchy. They were fighting constantly, and Blossomfall was about to repeat it again.

Ivypool spending time helping out with Daisy, acclimating the refugees to Clan life, learning to communicate with them... made Blossomfall jealous.

When Ivypool broke it off with Blossomfall, it wasn't because she loved Fiddles yet, thought Blossomfall DID accuse her of just wanting to move on "with the KITTYPET"

It was just because she was sick of living like this.

Fiddles happened to just... be there. They had become friends, but weren't anything more at that point.

For him, it felt good to pay her back for all the comfort she provided him, and she was grateful that she had someone without bias.

He didn't have a side yet, so when he told her that what she did was the right thing, it felt honest.

Ironically, Bossomfall accusing Ivypool of "just wanting to go googoo over the new kittypet" pushed Ivy and Fiddles closer together.

It wasn't JUST Ivypool he got close to, though! Briarlight was also starting to realize that she needed to start distancing herself from her family because of Millie's ableism... and Fiddles was there for her, too.

Emotional support king, quickly becoming friends with everyone.

The fact that he was close with Ivypool AND her sister, though?

To this DAY, even AFTER all she'd been through and having adult children of her own, Blossomfall still can't shake the negative feeling she gets when she looks at Fernsong. But she's wise enough now to know it's somewhat irrational.

The Impostor DID exploit this, however. But that is a story for another time.

What's most important is that in this moment, Ivypool, Fiddles, and Briarlight became good friends.

By the time the floods had receded and the humans were coming home, he found himself not wanting to go. Jessy was hard at work on improving Briarlight's mobility device, Frankie was taking to battle like a fish to water, and he was falling in love with Ivypool.

He walked Minty home, made her promise she'd prevent their twolegs from missing them, and headed back to ThunderClan...

Where Bramblestar made him the first apprentice of his father-in-law to be, the hardass hero of ThunderClan, Lionblaze! Gulp!

CLOSING TRIVIA

He is NOT named after Ferncloud! Ferncloud survived the BOTTE in Better Bones-- DUSTPELT died.

Birchfall and Whitewing's daughter, Duststripe (prev. sorrelstripe) is named after him.

Fernsong's name comes from how Fiddles was convinced his name referred to a type of fern. What type of fern? He didn't know!!

So when he eventually picked his prefix, he simply chose the generic term for ferns; Nan.

(Ferncloud's prefix, Marssi, is actually totally different in Clanmew. It's a specific species, Dryopteris filix-mas, known as Manfern in English. A species used in medicine for treating tapeworm.)

When I design ex-kittypets that aren't just common street cats, I intentionally avoid referencing one specific breed with the idea that this universe's history is slightly different. Fernsong is designed as a mix of an exotic shorthair and a british shorthair. An Exobrit, if you will.

I've decided to make him come from a home that bred cats, just because I think that's an interesting idea.

Not a mill or an abusive situation, but he's had a life before Ivypool, like she had a life before him.

He will be a den dad in BB. Ivypool comes in to nurse their kittens, but Fernsong is their Mi and she is their Ba.

Raves and Reviews for A Starless Clan

I just finished up my journey since June to reread the entire series, finishing up with A Starless Clan #2: Sky! I was lucky to get it delivered early from Indigo, and I've got to say, the newest arc is shaping up to be juicy. Spoilers under the cut!

So, I will admit I haven't fully read through River and Sky. Once I finished TBC, my uni semester started up, and I've been a bit busy. However: Nightheart is one angsty boy. I feel like it's a bit crass of Bramblestar to have named him Flameheart, initially, because we all know how he struggled with being named Brambleclaw. This whole series has revisited the concept of legacy and familial burden a lot through the years, and I just thought Bramblestar would've had more sympathy for poor Flamepaw. I guess not.

I was a bit taken aback by the Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde transformation we see Finchlight go through. In River, she'd been defending Nightheart at his warrior ceremony for rejecting the name, and in the first few chapters of Sky does a complete 180 and starts belittling him. Way to be a supportive sister!

Something I have noticed, though, as I've been in the business of naming cats for 4 years, is we're getting up there with -heart suffixes all around. We have Brightheart, Cinderheart, Lilyheart, Alderheart, and now Nightheart. I already thought having Cinderheart and Lilyheart as sisters with the same suffix was... interesting, it wasn't totally brand new, we'd seen it with Bluefur and Snowfur way back when. But it can start to get confusing, with the sheer number of dialogue-less background characters. Not to even mention the other Clan cats with -heart names: Berryheart and Grassheart of ShadowClan, Blossomheart of SkyClan, and Breezeheart of RiverClan. Don't get me started on the number of cats with -tail suffixes.

Can we appreciate for a second how cute the names Finchlight and Sunbeam are? My middle school oc-creating self is dying of happiness.

In Sky, I was surprised by the ending, when Nightheart asked to join ShadowClan and become Sunbeam's mate. I saw that coming a mile away, but I didn't think the Erins would do something so easily predictable. In this house we dislike Blazefire.

Imo, it's not Lightleap's fault that Blazefire chose her over Sunbeam, but she could be less... snotty about it. In Sunbeam's chapters when they're first travelling to the twoleg nest for catmint, some of her internal monologue is downright snotty too. These cats need therapy.

Frostpaw my beloved. I know Mothwing doesn't believe in StarClan but it isn't fair to put all that on Frostpaw's shoulders. All this "oh we can't let the other Clans know we're weak. We must be strong" garbage is too much for an apprentice to handle. It's okay to admit you need help, RiverClan. My god.

I hope Frostpaw's full name is Frostwillow, in honour of Willowshine, and cause Frostwillow sounds banger. Here are my thoughts:

Frostshimmer/glimmer (a bit out there for Warriors, even though we've had names like Ambermoon and Billystorm)

Any suffix starting with s, -shiver, -stone, -storm, etc (the sts sound can be a bit hard to pronounce)

Frostpebble (sounds super cute but unlikely)

Frostbite (imagine the pun potential)

Frostfern (sounds super cool but I doubt it as we have two living cats with the Fern prefix, Fernsong and Fernstripe of ThunderClan, and one cat with the -fern suffix, Fallowfern of SkyClan)

Frostfur (SEVERELY DOUBT they would do this, but we've had cats with the same names before, ie Ashfur of ShadowClan vs Ashfur of ThunderClan, Larksong I and Larksong II, both of ThunderClan, but the former being an elder in Bluestar's Prophecy and the latter being Sparkpelt's mate)

cloudtail’s daughter — worldbuilding & logistical things

so i've been working on an au re. dovewing being the direct child of cloudtail and brightheart. check out my cloudtail's daughter tag for more info, because i'm basically just jumping in this time with minimal context.

that said, i think this is relatively self-contained. it's mostly thoughts about the world of warriors, lumped in with specific changes for the au purposes.

[3.8k words, 14 min read. section headers, very long paragraphs. paragraphs in parathesis and italics are sidebars that can be skipped. a lot of spelling mistakes because my grammer checker cuts me off after like 2k words. sorry.]

section one: po3

so i've said before i want to minimize the changes made specifically in po3 for the purposes of this au. a) because that means i only have to keep track of 6 books worth of content (i've given myself through bramblestar's storm to get to the point where it could mostly fit into canon, but for reasons that are obvious re. my dovewing/tigerheart take, tigerheart's shadow would be a little weird, but not out of canon. anyway we don't get any tigerheart pov in this so who knows what he's thinking.)

anyway, hollyleaf plays a significant role in the ending three books of the rewrite, getting her own pov in book 4 the forgotten warrior. so she can't go exactly the same way it happens in po3. i need her back in thunderclan by book 2 for beavers, not book 5. also, she still needs to end up mates with fallen leaves. because changing that would count as a major series change that could have an impact on the future continuity and this series rewrite is intended to be fairly self contained.

right. so hollyleaf has her shit a bit more together, but she still kills ashfur and goes into the tunnels. the difference is we're ignoring the entire hollyleaf's story novella. don't get me wrong, it was a really good novella, but she doesn't have that much time. i'm not interested in figuring out the details of what happens, but she returns to the clans either before book one or in book one, i haven't decided. she continues to see fallen leaves fairly regularly, though, including spending irregular nights with him. everyone just kind of...accepts hollyleaf's ghost boyfriend, because no one wants to upset hollyleaf again.

lionblaze's personality is not entirely nonexistant in po3, contrary to popular opinion, but he does have to support an entire book in this rewrite, and it's the weakest book in the arc, so he's gotta have something. i've nudged him to be a bit gregarious and open. you know, big and friendly and warm. terrifying in battle though.

jayfeather ends on much better terms with brightheart. i know he doesn't really end on a bad note with her, but this is also to help story flow a bit.

other changes will, i'm sure, crop up here and there, but those are the three major ones. i've got tonnes of changes i'd like to make, but i'm keeping it minor. (notably, if it were up to me, jayfeather would do his back in time sequence once, not twice, and it would be in omen of the stars. hollyleaf's ghost boyfriend would add more solid ground to it, and that would be established in book 2, but as i've decreed the rules, it is not up to me.

also, dovekit and jaykit would be siblings, and dovepaw would become the medicine cat dovefeather, and jaypaw would be the warrior jaywing. that's a bigger change though for a different au.)

section two: family dynamics & a bit of genetics

so one thing i really like in omen of the stars is how close dove/ivy/white are. it's really cute. cloudtail and dovekit are super close in the first book, and brightheart, dovekit, and ivykit are going to stay close throughout their lives. (cloudtail will also stay close with his daughters, but dovewing and ivypool consistently look to whitewing for support, and brightheart is good for that too.)

i have whitewing as still existing because age wise, i think it makes sense for brightheart to have her younger litter at dovekit and ivykit, than for them to be her first litter and for amber/dew/snow continue to exist. (in my hypothetical jaywing/dovefeather au, this is reversed.)

i'm not keen on her being close with her younger sisters. i do think, for future story purposes, whitewing and birchfall would have amber/snow/dew. this is a super unimportant change because the only part of that litter that matters is that lilykit is fostered so that lilyheart can then foster twigkit and violetkit, and there's 0 reason that whitewing can't be responsible for that.

(be honest, did you even remember that chain of events? did you even remember who raised lilykit? did you even remember sorreltail was her birth mother who died? yeah, that's what i thought.)

anyway, i've danced around the specific genetics of how we get a grey dovekit from a white cloudtail and a red brightheart, and you may think, "matthew, one paragraph isn't dancing around it," and that's because you have no idea how much i care about this and how much i have to say about this. if you don't want to read 1.3k words about cat genetics, skip to the next section. the last two paragraphs is the only part that's even kind of important.

so. i've put a whole lot of thought into this. because obviously dovekit is responsible for being grey to make the whole bit work about her, you know, being dovekit, and dovekit must be dovekit for dove's gentle wings to work. so this is important.

i'm going to walk through the two options: tortie brightheart and tortie dovewing. (*technically, calico brightheart and either for dovewing, but i'm keeping it brief.)

(an aside that's totally skipable: so there is a gene on the extension locus E/e which causes cats born black to turn to amber, which definitely could be brightheart, but it's pretty rare, so i'm sticking with my calico assumptions. that said, in brightheart's official art, there is a black ring around her nose, implying a very specific silver tabby to amber deal. given her kit coat isn't described anywhere i can find it, i'd say it's actually the best description of brightheart. that said, best description is not the most likely. anyway, if this were the case, i wouldn't need all of this write up. so know that there's an easy solution, but i'm choosing to ignore it because of its rarity and because i don't want to check if brightheart could have inherited the silver genes she would have had to for this to work. it's definitely possible, given that frostfur has the same deal as cloudtail, see below, and lionheart could be golden --- as in the formal word for a cat with certain genes, a color linked to silver, but, well, i just can't find it likely. i'll add a short description of how it would work at the very end of this though.)

in either case, cloudtail is the same, so i'll address him first.

so, cats have four genes on the white allele, Wd, Ws, w, and wg. Wd is dominant white, and it could be what cloudtail has, but since he has blue eyes, it would be likely for him to be deaf, and, because it's dominant, there's a low chance that neither dovekit nor ivykit inherit it. is what i would be saying if whitewing wasn't his first daughter. she is also solid white with blue eyes, so to me, that makes me thing he has Wd- (as in, any other gene.)

the other option, Ws, requires him to be WsWs to be fully white, and brightheart to be either WsWs or Ws- for whitewing to inherit WsWs. given that ambermoon and dewnose are not fully white, it seems that brightheart is Ws- and cloudtails is Wdw (or Wdwg) in order for their theoretical image to be correct.

(an aside of even less importance: ambermoon's father was not cloudtail. the short explanation is that she shares one X chromosome with princess, who was XX --- see my discussion of tortoiseshells below, we know princess wasn't one, so she can't be XXo --- and one with brightheart, who's XXo or XoXo. therefore, ambermoon and princess cannot both have accurate canon descriptions because one of them needs to be a tortie. i think it's more likely she was sired by a red tom. yes, it is possible for kits in the same litter to have different sires, and yes, that is necessary, because no one else has dominant white in thunderclan AFAIK. this means making her birchfall and whitewing's gives a bit more wiggle room in all this. a bit. she could also have the same thing covered on brightheart in the above slide, but that's complicated for other reasons.)

brightheart is almost certainly Wsw or Wswg. they're not both wgwg because that leaves no options for ambermoon, who i'm interpretting as not having any white. cloudtail inherits from princess wg because of birman gloving demonstrating on her white paws (there are other ways, but given her description, which fits it almost identically, i'm going with that.) so for white, we have Wdwg for cloudtail and Wsw for brightheart.

ivypool inherits Wswg so she can have her inconsistent white, and dovewing inherits wwg.

now, we don't know anything about cloudtail's father, except that he's white too (or cloudtail couldn't be white.) princess is light brown tabby, which is something i'm having a hard time deciding her genetics for, so we'll work back to that (neither of the obvious options leads to a cat that looks like princess, because of how tabbies work, the combination is likely not to be obvious anyway) if i decide we need her genetics.

right so for dovewing to be solid grey, two things must be true: cloudtail and brightheart must be either Dd or dd (dilution). brightheart, i don't believe, is dilute, because i've seen cream on cats and it's far closer to sandstorm's color than brightheart, so i'm calling her Dd. cloudtail can be either.

dovewing is dd, and so is ivypool. that's how you get light grey.

now, either cloudtail or brightheart have to have a B- black phenotype. (special case included, if you read the aside) and i think it's more likely to be cloudtail. then, brightheart can be blbl, which is cinnamon, and would help hide her tortie-ness. (we're covering that later.)

at this point, dovewing is more or less settled. if you're comfortable with this type of genetics, you can probably work it out. dovekit inherits B-/dd/wwg, and she's everything we need. the fact that she's not a tabby does kind of matter, but not really, because the nonagouti gene is recessive so even if cloudtail was a masked tabby, he can still be Aa and brighheart can be Aa, so she won't show. that makes dovewing B-/dd/wwg/aa, for those following along at home.

ivypool is a tabby, so she'd be B-/bb/Ws-/A-.

okay, we have the core of them settled down. there's a lot more that goes into types of tabbies, but that doesn't really matter here. the last bit that matters is the tortie issue.

as is a somewhat commonly known fact, tortie cats are almost always female, because the phaeomelanin (red pigment) gene in cats is sex linked to Xo (vs X for eumelanin, the black gene). this is expressed as O/o when discussing the specific gene, but since we only care if its dominant, the XO/Xo distinction is slightly faster to type if X means black and Xo means orange.

anyway, these are codominant, if a cat has two, they'll be expressed at random. that's how tortie cats exist. since for the vast majority of cases, only female cats have two X chromosomes, only female cats can be XXo.

(as an aside, that's another reason for the clans to find sol strange. i know the clans have a lot of male calicos, but sol was the most distinctive one, since redtail died in the prologue and i can't recall any others off the top of my head.)

anyway, dovewing needs to inherit XX to be fully black (grey), so brightheart needs to be tortie to pass on one to her and remain orange. alternatively, brightheart is XoXo and dovewing is a tortie. i'm sticking with brightheart tortie because that's actually how i pictured her, so i like it better, but it doesn't really matter, since the cream on dilute torties is actually rather subtle.

ivypool is the same as dovewing, although she could be a tortie if dovewing isn't and brightheart is, something i quite like the idea of.

now, for option 3, the cryptic option in the aside. basically, to summarize, you can get black cats who turn orange over time. the end result is a cat who looks very much like brightheart if they start silver tabbies (like ivypool could be), up to the black ring around her nose in the official art. that makes it the best way to describe brightheart.

however, it's pretty rare, so i chose to ignore it for my analysis. if brightheart did have this gene, then nothing would change about dovekit and ivykit from their canon descriptions, nor would her's change, except for her apprentice art, which would need to be updated as spreading orange over silver.

this is also the only option that gives us fully red ivykit, something i have decreed adorable.

over 1k words about cat colors later, here's my take: dovewing and ivypool with somewhat mirrored tortie spots (they'll never be perfectly mirrored, both because ivypool has white and because its entirely random) is cute and adds something extra to all of that art where they're mirrored.

i'd rather have straight red brightheart because she's got so much art very clearly not calico, and i'd rather have the two sisters match each other for cinematic drama than change brightheart. the accurate thing to do would be calico brightheart because it could be easily hidden by the right genes on the B locus, but i don't want to do that. so. i hope this was illustrative.

section three: clan culture

this here has no impact on plot but i've read a lot of worldbuilding stuff developing distinct cultures for the clans and honestly, that's why i'm so sad book 6 takes place with two shadowclan narrators. unfortunately, dovewing and ivypool are, like, crucial to the success of the clan cats, so they need to be there.

that said, were i to write this, i would certain write novellas for lionblaze and jayfeather.

anyway, i'm going to take what we've come to see as "standard clan culture" as thunderclan culture. they have a good deal of contact not with twolegs but with kittypets (compared to the opposite for riverclan) in the old terretory, so it makes sense they developed a more rigid, militeristic life, less free and less spiritual than the other clans necessarily. they're trying to be tough in front of the kittypets.

riverclan is just kinda...chill. they like flowers and shiny things. they copy twolegs because its fun (cats irl do this because they want to be like you --- being like you seems safe to them, but these kitties do it because its fun.)

so they make, not flower crowns because, no thumbs, but certainly weave flowers into den walls and leave petals places. (to everyone who keeps putting things on cats heads, please try doing that with the most patient domestic cat you know, and then i'll let you quietly correct yourself. i mean, continue doing it for fun, but if you seriously think that's possible...)

i do like the idea of them making wreathes its just, like, no opposable thumbs guys. maybe the medicine cats do it for religious holidays.

anyway, they have patrols far less regularly than thunderclan. they're also the most true to real cat schedules: most active at dawn and dusk. that's when fish are active.

so they're not lazy, sleeping all day, they get up earlier than all but the earliest risers in thunderclan and shadowclan. (windclan wakes up early too, we're getting to them.)

they also make shrines, but they don't really have a ton of weight to them. they're copying what they see.

when cats die, however, the trinkets lining their nests are dispersed to their loved ones, and one or two are added to a collective pile/arrangement somewhere. riverclan has been pretty clear their nests float (although i can't tell you why, considering they just evacuate when that happens and have to rebuild), so the most useful thin i can think of is to preserve the trinkets.

they also are one of the two clans to celebrate proper holidays. there's not a good sense of order to them, but when a celebration is needed, a celebration is had.

that said, unlike thunderclan, the warrior vigil does remain strong in riverclan. this is because twolegs are far more common in their territory, and so learning to be quiet when necessary is important, and the vigil reinforces that. riverclan cats are also really good at sitting still: you have to, to be able to catch fish.

shadowclan is pretty serious, but unlike thunderclan, they're serious about religion. being a medicine cat in shadowclan is a pretty serious deal. they tend to die young. (i'm stealing this mostly/entirely from warrior cats redux because i can't get it out of my head.)

they retain bringing apprentices to the moonpool in the new territory. it was always an important deal for them, whereas in thunderclan it's kind of like "oh yeah make sure that happens," like a mastery project in high school or a first year seminar in university.

they also care a lot about their ancestors. i believe blackstar is the one who called the names of the fallen during every gathering? yeah. that's because remembering the dead is really important in shadowclan.

they've got a lot of nursery tales about ghosts who grew vengeful once their names were forgotten, fading from starclan but not allowed to fully die. so. when everyone dies real fast like that, carving their names into everyone's memory is super important.

(if it wasn't blackstar who did that it is in this au.)

anyway, they've got a good amount of order to their life, like thunderclan, and the camp is also a lot quieter. in thunderclan, kits are under a good amount of danger from badgers and foxes and hawks, oh my!, but pine forests are a bit safer, since foxes are the only serious predetor.

i mean, it's complicated, and i can't really figure out what biome to base this analysis on, but i'm sticking with "foxes are all shadowclan really has to worry about" because it works for me. so shadowclan kits are allowed (suprivised) out of camp much earlier.

i know this contradicts tigerheart's shadow, and my choice was either "shadowclan: militant about protecting kits" or "shadowclan: dgaf" and i'm going with "after brokenstar, they did get real protective of their kits, which is when tigerkit was born and raised, but over time, they've relaxed back to their natural state of chill"

anyway, they're probably the most similar to thunderclan, but dovewing vibes there so much better because there's a real sense of order for purpose, not just because. so there's less shouting about who is going on patrol and who's hunting. the dawn patrol is leaving because if you're up at dawn, you need to secure the territory. etc.

and while she's part of a prophecy, shadowclan revers the prophecy itself, not dovewing. dovewing is not special for being a part of it, she's just doing her role for clan life. her role happens to be different than the usual, but so what? she's just a cat.'

also, they have holidays. namely, the new moon is a big celebration night, but they also celebrate the seasons, and new life. this is part of why tigerheart gets so homesick: even dovewing, his wife, doesn't share this part of life with him, and he misses it.

finally, windclan. i don't know honestly what to do with them. they're supposed to be the most spiritual but that's not reflected in how they're written, even in like tallstar's revenge, so i don't know. i think they're the calm riverclan crossed with the more focused on protocol of clan life thunderclan.

they rise early because rabbits, and their hunting patrols are smaller and less organized. based on the books, they just run full wild after rabbits most of the time, which means they scare off the other ones for a while, so it makes sense to have a mentor and apprentice go out every hour or so during the waking day to grab a bunny or bird than for a bunch of cats to feed the clan for a day.

they do have a lot of respect for medicine cats and leaders. starclan isn't seen as something the average cat has any connection at all with. i have a hard time keeping track of who complains about what in the broken code and avos, but i feel like windclan gets angry at some point about shadowsight's visiosn.

anyway, so a cat like jayfeather is like "oh he real cool" and that's fun for jayfeather. everyone expects great things from him. because, you know, medicine cat and in a prophecy? can you imagine i mean shame he came to be via crowfeather and leafpool but you'd be a fool not to admit he's a credit to his parent's names.

they're also pretty proud. and private. very private. no one knows at all what goes on in windclan. i'd not put it past them to have a secondary camp to move to if they get uncomfortable with so many people knowing where their camp is.

i mean, how else do you explain them keeping the tunnlers secret for so long? i mean, like completely secret, no one else knew about them secret, we found out about them in a super edition secret for so long?

section four: medicine cat shit

this is a short section, but i want there to be the idea, especially in shadowclan and windclan, that medicine cats are really important to the integrity of a clan, so they need to be spiritually pure. this doesn't mean they can't have been warriors, but they can't break the code.

that's why thunderclan and riverclan medicine cats share herbs so much more than the others: if windclan and shadowclan leadrs say no, medicine cats are risking a lot by disobeying.

this is also part of why leafpool steps down when the truth comes out. what she did is bad enough, but it will be far worse for crowfeather if she doesn't step down, and shadowclan and windclan will come for her head.

nightcloud and breezepelt are also angry because not only did crowfeather have kits out of clan, but it was with a medicine cat. that's like having sex out of wedlock with a nun.

and that's pretty much all i have for this. most of it was taken up by cat genetics, because integrity matters to me.

Confession time: I am so incredibly pissed at Mistystar for exiling cats (can't remember names) for disobeying her to fight a murderous tyrant.Of all cats. Mistystar! I know it's the Erins adding edge but it's just so frustrating that they made M I S T Y S T A R pull that card. Her arc in TPB revolved around pain caused by tyrants. I feel betrayed. I've rarely felt such visceral rage from reading Warriors as I did in that scene.

and now she’s exiling people who were doing the right thing and not sitting vigil for one of her warriors and burying her like a rogue because she for some reason is letting bramblestar basically lead her clan for her

i was going to pass it off as “she’s old and scared” but like no that’s not an excuse

Brief History: Dapplecloud was born as a kittypet named Berry to her mother Mottleflower (formerly Briar) and father Jack.  She formed a close bond with her Twolegs’ daughter Maria Bell from a very young age.  Maria was bullied for being wheelchair-bound; this made Dapplecloud aware of those with different needs early on.  She spent her first moons on Maria’s lap, making friends around the neighborhood, and avoiding her brother Patches’ bullying.  All of this changed around her fourth moon.

Shadow demons from the Dark Forest wreaked havoc on Dapplecloud’s neighborhood as she was walking with her mother.  The shadow demons killed most of those in the area, including Jack, Dapplecloud’s uncle Matt, her littermates, Maria, and Maria’s parents.  To pour salt on the wound, the taint the Dark Forest left on their souls prevented any of them from passing in peace.  Dapplecloud left her home with her mother after she made a promise with Death; he would inform her when the taint from the shadow demons ran out so she could travel back and say goodbye to her family.  

She began receiving strange dreams after her family’s death of tending to hurt cats in a large community of felines.  It felt natural to her.  The dreams persisted as she and Mottleflower settled into ThunderClan.  Their medicine cat Jayfeather realized Dapplecloud was meant to become his new apprentice.  He needed to fill the voids left from Leafpool leaving the lake and Alderheart becoming a warrior.  He took her in despite the misgivings of several Clanmates.  He trained her for the first six moons of her apprenticeship, and supported her when Mottleflower was murdered during her ninth moon.

Dapplecloud’s training nearly came to an end during her twelfth moon.  She woke up at the Moonpool to cats from every living Clan attacking her and the other medicine cats present.  The attacking cats separated her from Jayfeather.  They slashed at her belly on the Moonpool’s shore.  Puddleshine of ShadowClan drove them off, but her severe injuries made Dapplecloud lapse into a coma.  She awoke to Mothwing of RiverClan tending to her.  The golden tabby gently informed her that her mentor was presumed dead from the attack.

The Moonpool incident had many consequences.  Dapplecloud found she could not trust most of her Clanmates anymore.  How could she, when several of them attacked her at the Clans’ holy site and presumably killed her mentor?  She developed a series of slash-shaped scars on her belly.  Bramblestar punished those who participated in the attack.  Mothwing became Dapplecloud’s mentor for the final moons of her training.  She has continued to lose many friends over the years, but Dapplecloud remains strong against those wishing harm on her Clan.

On one hand, I'm surprised that the Erin's didn't recall the book(s) that implied that Tigerheartstar was born after the DF battle, like how Bramblestar's Storm had to get partially rewritten because Greystripe called Mistystar his daughter.

On the other hand, I kinda wish that the Erin's had rolled with the blunder and said that Greystripe was starting to go senile.

Imagine Elder!Greystripe going to a gathering and talking to Mistystar, accidentally calls her his daughter despite her being older than him, and when she gently corrects him he just blinks and says, "What are you talking about, Feathertail? Of course I'm your father."

Nick and Edgey are still talking about the homework but Larry is bored of it and he’s done as much as he’s gonna do by now. He wanders off into the kitchen to see what snacks the Edgeworths have and he is still there when he hears the front door open and close and Franzy comes in the kitchen. She gently sets her bag down on one of the kitchen chairs, shooting a look of disgust down at Larry’s bag which has spilled contents all over the floor. Hey, he was going to clean that up! Before Mr Edgeworth gets home, at least!

“Hey Franzy,” he says, and her head snaps up like she didn’t realize he was there, and an expression of fury contorts her entire face and she snatches up something out of her bag and storms across the kitchen to begin smacking Larry in the shoulder with it. “Ow! Hey! Hey!”

Even with the commotion neither of the other two come out to rescue him which Larry thinks is real cruel of them. “Larry Butz!” Franzy shouts. “Where is the next book! Where is it!” In between her assaults, he manages to wrench her weapon from her hands and sees it’s the third Warrior Cats book that he lent her yesterday. “You can’t leave me hanging like this!”

“Wh - you finished it already? I gave it to you yesterday!”

“Where is the next book, Larry Butz!”

“It’s at home! I don’t have it!”

“Graystripe left!” she shrieks. “ThunderClan doesn’t trust him! But RiverClan probably won’t either when he goes! I need to know what happens next!”

“I’ll bring it over tomorrow!” He’s getting beaten to heck by his best friend’s baby sister because of these cat books. What a day.

“I want to read it now! I want to know what happens with Graystripe’s loyalties!”

“I don’t have it now!” Seriously, neither Edgey or Nick is coming to make sure neither of them are bleeding? Rude. “But I do have something else you can read if you want more Warrior Cats!” She stares doubtfully at him, and at the book he’s lifted way over his head so that she can’t get it back and start smacking him with it again. “It’s not got Graystripe but I think you might still be interested.”

He stuffs his book back in his back and grabs one of his notebooks off the floor. “Your school notes, Larry Butz?” Franzy huffs. “I don’t want those.”

“It’s not my notes.” Wow, she thinks he takes notes and doesn’t just sneak peaks at Edgey’s and Nick’s? “It’s a story I’m writing. It’s about other Warrior Cats, ones I’ve made up myself, but they’ve still got Clans and a Warrior Code and stuff.”

She accepts the notebook, still looking wary but a little excited. “And cats with divided loyalties?”

“You really like the ‘forbidden lovers’ thing, huh?”

“It’s not about the romance!” she protests. “I like the - the…” Whatever it is, if she’s not just trying to cover up for the fact that she does like the romance, she doesn’t figure out how to put to words, and she just lets out a short frustrated yell and opens the front cover of the notebook. “Is this story finished? Or are you going to leave me hanging again.”

“It’s not done, no--”

She smacks him with his notebook and then storms off, but she’s already engrossed in the first page and nearly hits the wall as she leaves.

“--and then the rumor from the preview of the book is that Bramblestar has rabies.”

“Rabies?” Franzy repeats with a laugh. “You know,” she adds a moment later, thoughtfully, “that seems like a plot that they could have used sooner. Has anyone actually had rabies before?”

“I don’t believe so? Maybe because it’s supposedly supposed to be set in England.” But he’s never even nominally given a location to his fic, so, yeah, that would be a good plot. Maybe he should use that. Although most of his readers would know that’s a plot he’s stealing from fan theories. “I haven’t really read any of the recent books though. This is all what I’m hearing from--”

“--this internet friend of yours, yes,” Franzy interrupts. “The wolfman who likes cats.”

“Yeah.” The one and only. 

Franzy rests her chin on her hand. “So you still haven’t told Misty why you draw cats all the time.”

“It’s not exactly been a priority these past couple weeks, no.”

“I meant any time before that, you still did not tell Elise.” 

“What, that I initially found her book and then reached out to her because I stumbled across it in the children’s section of the bookstore when I was there picking up a book about talking cats because my wolfman internet friend told me that they’d actually put out a decent book for once?”

“Well, when you put it that way it sounds ridiculous.”

Franziska picks at the edge of her nail, listening as Agent Lang finishes his conversation with one of his agents. He stares at his phone a moment longer when he brings it down from his ear. Franziska glances over at the screen. 

“I did not expect you would like cats.” It’s not even a picture of a cat, like he has a cat at home. It’s some cute art of a cat. Like something Larry would draw.

“Didn’t expect you to like small talk, Ms Prosecutor.”

Franziska leans against the wall. “I do not. But if we are stuck together by this smuggling ring investigation then we may as well know who we are working with.”

“I know who I’m working with,” Lang snarls. “Prosecutor von Karma. I know all about your father.”

“Yes, Gregory Edgeworth. He’s a remarkable defense attorney, wouldn’t you agree?” Lang’s face hardens. “Agent Shi-Long Lang, blood and names are not the only things that make a family - or a ‘pack’, if you wish to use your silly analogies.”

“Probably should’ve told that to Mr Ernest Amano before he called you up for help on basis of having been friends with your father.”

“Many people try to call me up on basis of having known Manfred von Karma. I like to help them, arrest and prosecute them if needed, and let them know, unequivocally, that I am not what they think my blood and name would make me be.”

“Hey, so uh, Franzy, I’ve got a weird thing to tell you.”

Franziska rubs her eyes, yawns, takes a moment to adjust to the fact that it is mid-afternoon and she just woke up and Larry was passed out on her couch because he’d stuck around the embassy waiting for her to be able to give him a ride and also said that he figured that Miles and Gregory wouldn’t forgive him if he just fucked off and abandoned her in the middle of that messy aftermath, but he’d also been asleep in a corner when she found him so she’s not sure how much that was a motivator. Not enough to keep him awake. “Weirder than the fact that you became a stage-show actor?”

“Hey, my savings were getting low, and while Misty’s still recovering I figured I should go out and have a job for a bit - anyway, um, so. Agent Lang.”

“What of the wolfman? I asked him to give me a call once he was out of surgery.” He’d laughed at her concern. She snapped at him, oh forgive her for being concerned about someone who was shot and had to get the bullet removed. 

“Yeah, he’s, uh - so, funny story, you know my internet friend, the WolfDragon guy?”

Franziska thinks about the cat picture that she asked Lang about. That she thought Larry could have drawn. “Larry Butz, tell me that you are joking with me right now--”

“No and also I’d said I’d pick him up at the hospital but I don’t have a car but you do and--”

“So are all the characters in your fanfic based on real people, or just some of them?” Lang asks. The three of them have tucked themselves into a booth of a little diner, a B-movie werewolf on crutches, an artist in sweatpants and uncombed hair, and Franziska, who had also been too tired to wear any more than casual clothes and got heckled by Lang for how hilariously different she looks out of her professional wardrobe. 

Larry slurps his coffee. “Yeah, honestly, most of them are based on people we know. If you meet them you’ll probably be able to guess pretty easily.”

“Ha, I bet. Dead ringer on Ms Viperpaw von Edgeworth here. Half-clan kit trying to figure out where she fits in between her blood relations and the people she’s grown up with?”

Franziska sips her tea loudly. Disconcerting, having someone know all about her because he read the fanfiction that she is a cat in. “You had better give me my warrior name soon,” she tells Larry.

Briarlight and Snowbush were killed in the rockslide, rather than sickness for the former. Briarlight stayed behind in camp to make sure all the kits got out safely, since they were her kin. Snowbush stayed to help her get out, but they were both too late. They were both found alive, but Briarlight died because her lungs collapsed after some broken ribs, while Snowbush died from his infected broken leg. Blossomfall and Bumblestripe both had a major change of heart after this, knowing that the former’s kits were alive and safe thanks to her

Brightheart is a cryptic tortie and Cloudtail masks ginger and dilute (Princess herself was a cryptic tortie and carried dilute, while his father Oliver masked black and dilute)

I was very tempted to add Jessy to the Clan, but decided against it. She now wanders around but visits every leaf-bare (she was there for the birth of Alderheart and Sparkpelt), and is mates with both Bramblestar and Squirrelflight, who also have a much healthier relationship than in canon (to make the books of the actual arc contrast more)

Snappaw, Spotpaw, and Flypaw are close to being named warriors, while Bristlekit, Thriftkit, and Twirlkit are a day or so away from being named apprentices (it’s late newleaf, and I personally believe Fernsong and Ivypool’s kits were born in late leaf-fall)

anakin skywalker. i still remember being indignant when ahsoka talked back to him in the tcw movie | either lissa or frederick | probably dovewing (i borrowed the fourth apprentice from a friend and read that first before going back and reading the rest of the series)

the character you never expected to love so much:

probably ezra bridger, tbh! i started watching rebels purely for ahsoka and rex and did not expect to get so attached to the ghost crew literally within the first 5 minutes of spark of rebellion | TAKUMI | ... god, it’s so hard to remember these things, the first time i read these books was so many years ago... squirrelflight, maybe?

the character you relate to the most:

echo! i used to read encyclopedias for fun as a kid so i understand his love of the reg manual | probably sumia? i don’t quite have self-esteem issues like she does but i do tend to downplay my strengths and kinda write myself off. plus we both love reading and even tend to prefer the same genres (mostly fantasy and fiction) | leafpool because i too spend a good deal of my time pretending everything is fine even if it’s not and trying to fix my mistakes,

i don't know if you've gotten this one before, but what are all of your muses' rooms like?

here’s my old answer to this one but i’ll just go through and like, list one personal possession they have in their rooms as a way of adding onto it. under a cut bc long

glory - bizarrely (without context), a pirate hat. a strange accessory amidst the usual stuff she collects, but it’s actually from her early days on denny when she and another friend of hers (carnival, played by storm) were traveling with an ACTUAL PIRATE, eps’ blackbeard. this was when glory was really new to denny and hadn’t settled down and decided what she wanted to do yet so for awhile she just, kinda begrudgingly traveled with this friendly pirate dude who latched onto her? those were simpler days and a part of her misses them, so she has a keepsake. 

idk if bramblestar or badgerstripe keep anything particularly special or permanent because they’re feral cats, so we’ll just skip over them

lucille - she still has the journal edith gave her for christmas, which usually sits in the drawer beside her bed. so like, not technically something most people would notice within plain sight, but it’s there. it helped her get into the habit of clearing her thoughts by writing things down, but even still she hasn’t filled it yet because she kept just using whatever paper was at hand instead. thus the journal slowly became reserved for more deliberate writing.

kara - the superfriends scrapbook absolutely bears mentioning. she and acit!ratchet made it together and now it contains… the only pictures she has left of him, so she can’t get rid of it. it’s very sentimental for her. (it also contains the letter she wrote to him as a goodbye, which… reboot!ratchet eventually found, in one of the most heartbreaking parts of rkplot. actually idk if kara ever even found out about that?) also the various christmas/birthday gifts the superfriends have given her over the years. OH ALSO INCLUDING the enchanted sunflowers rey gave her, i’m still not over that

siobhan - her silver banshee costume stays in her room. she never actually wears it anymore because when the mld framed her and rocket, her secret identity got blown, so she just kinda stopped bothering with it. but she still keeps the costume? she’s not even sure why? once rocket starts easing her into actual hero stuff she might think about like, re-designing the entire thing as a PROPER initiation to the guardians,

caitlin/killer frost - a leather jacket that is, shockingly, CAITLIN’S, not killer frost’s. caitlin’s general aesthetic has gotten just a bit edgier since the beginning of season 4. the jacket is cool enough to win killer frost’s approval, so sometimes she’ll just wear it even though it’s not hers, although she knows that caitlin will FIND A WAY to fuckin’ kill her if she ever ruins it, so. only when she’s not about to go out and do something dangerous. 

sara - even apart from all the stuff she’s collected via various time traveling trips, sara has accumulated enough little things from people on denny at this point that it was hard to pick. i mean. there’s her lightsaber, for one. someday someone is going to pick that up not knowing what it is, accidentally turn it on and then be like “WHAT THE FUCK”. buuut another good one is e-1 laurel’s 1 year sobriety chip, which she used to keep just stored in the captain’s office, but now she keeps it a lot closer to her since the whole thing with.... well,

heather - i’ve said before that she has a few vintage posts of like, old 80′s artists she really likes, and this is totally headcanon but i bet you anything ratchet stole them at one point, went back in time on the waverider, and got them all signed for her because he is just THAT extra when it comes to people he’s dating. also she has a handful of first edition books that she’s lowkey started collecting.

madeline - the entire stage script of avenue q! i was literally going to just leave that there if i couldn’t think of anything better but no um, you know what this is the most random thing ever, but it just occurred to me that i really like the idea of madeline keeping a potted cactus in her bedroom. like, the rest of her house and garden is probably decorated with actual legitimate plants and flowers, but in her bedroom? just a cactus. the most resilient, prickly, weirdly fitting thing for her to be taking care of.

trish - i guess there are a few sentimental things i could come up with for trish but... probably most defining is the fact that she keeps an actual gun in her bedside drawer. like, just a handgun, and it’s a step up from keeping it under her PILLOW like she was doing for a little while in jj season 1, but still. tfw you struggle to feel safe even in your high-security apartment. i think since that’s like, definitely not something she’d want one of the kids getting their hands on, she probably keeps her bedroom locked or something most of the time.

anya - her grandmother’s music box, aka one of the few possessions she has… like, in general. she also can’t even be sure it was HER grandmother’s, at this point, but i mean we all know how anastasia goes. the music box is very important and tends to trigger some old… almost-memories every now and again. she’d probably make enough to get her on her feet if she sold it, because it’s like, a priceless russian antique at this point, but she just can’t bring herself to.

the books never really portrayed a definite time on how long everything was (since like after a few chatting the leaders would give the news and after things were done almost immediately a clan goes back home, i remember in bramblestars storm thunderclan and riverclan were the two last clans to go back or somethin) but i tend to generally also go with it being 1-3 hours! i also rlly like @coyotebreath​‘s hcs, these are all giving me some juicy ideas smmmm
