Shisui doesn’t believe in ghosts; not in a traditional sense, anyway. He doesn’t believe in the kind of ghosts that haunt the lonely mansions where they once resided, unknowing or uncaring of the eyes that might gaze upon them, or in ones that wander aimlessly through dark corridors in the dead of night. He doesn’t believe that ghosts throw trinkets from shelves, shattering glass and porcelain and peace in their rage. They don’t sit on people’s chests as they sleep, choking the life and the air out of their lungs, don’t carve desperate claw marks down chests and backs and arms to make their presence known.

Ghosts don’t do these things, Shisui thinks, because they don’t need to. They have better ways to keep people up at night.

He’s only a child when he witnesses this for the first time, when his mother finally succumbs to the cancer in her bones and his father doesn’t eat for three days. It’s not the spirit of his mother that creaks the stairs in the late nights that follow, but the haunted form of his father, making the trek to the couch because he can’t bring himself to sleep in his (her) room anymore. Shisui doesn’t see flashes of specters in the corner of his vision, but he sees his mother’s ghost nonetheless in the dark shadows under Kagami’s eyes. He hears her in the heavy silence that begins to substitute for dinner conversation; he feels her in the air that tries to suffocate him when he steps in the house after school.

Shisui bears witness to all of this at eight years of age, but he doesn’t really understand it until he’s seventeen, when his brother meets his own untimely demise in a car crash. It’s then, standing in a cold hospital room, staring at a lifeless form that had once been his brother, that he really begins to understand:

Getting Sasuke onto the right bus is only a bit of an ordeal, partially because he had been under the impression that he would be allowed to ride with Itachi the entire way to school and partially because he spotted some blond classmate who he loudly proclaimed that he Did Not Like boarding the bus before him. The blond boy scowled at him and flipped a hand gesture that implied the feeling was mutual, earning him a scolding from the bus driver.

“You’re sure your bus doesn’t go by my school?” Sasuke asks, as though he suspects Shisui might be lying to him just to get him out of his hair.

“I’m totally sure,” Shisui promises, but Sasuke narrows his eyes at him suspiciously.

“Prove it.”

Shisui doesn’t roll his eyes, but only because Itachi is standing right next to him and would heavily disapprove. “Itachi,” he says, trying not to sound too desperate. “Back me up here.”

It takes a beat too long for Itachi to step in, almost like he’s weighing the pros of getting Sasuke safely onto the correct bus with the cons of ending the amusement that is watching Shisui lose an argument with a seven year old, but he does nod his head in the end. “He’s telling the truth. We have to get on different buses now.”

Sasuke doesn’t pout, but Shisui thinks he can see the hint of a lower lip in his scowl. “That’s stupid.”

Itachi hums as if to agree with him, then says, “Mother will pick us up from school like usual, so we’ll see you this afternoon.”

This promise seems to placate Sasuke, who finally agrees to board his own bus and allow Shisui and Itachi to board theirs. Predictably, it’s loud and crowded, but Itachi easily finds an empty seat near the front to slide into. (Shisui considers telling him that no one who is even remotely cool sits near the front of the bus, but he ultimately decides that the intricacies of high school social hierarchies are quite deliberately lost on Itachi and so sighs and resigns himself to being uncool for the rest of his high school career.)
