THE TRAGEDY OF MACBETH (2021) and DRIVE-AWAY DOLLS (2024): How to Make One Very Long Coen Brothers' Film

If you know me, then you know that I love the Coen brothers' films. Because of this, I decided to do something very... silly? I waited to watch Drive-Away Dolls (2024) until I could watch The Tragedy of Macbeth (2021). Why? Because the brothers made these films separately, and I thought that by watching them together I could make one very long Coen brothers' film.

One can see the distinct styles of Joel and Ethan Coen in each film- from the grim and surrealist moods of Macbeth to the saturated pop absurdity of Drive-Away Dolls. Each brother has their own, almost opposite, approach to the writing, themes, and purpose for their films. From what I've seen of their collaborative works, their styles never fully override each other. Miller's Crossing (1990) leans closer to Macbeth in tone and seriousness but it still has Ethan Coen's absurdity. Raising Arizona (1987) is ridiculous but is not without important moments. What was nice to see was that their independent films shared crew members, mainly Ellen Chenoweth (casting director) and Carter Burwell (music). Fans of the Coens' will know that Chenoweth and Burwell have been working with the brothers for years, so it is seeing them still work together on their individual projects is great!

The Tragedy of Macbeth is one of the best Shakespeare adaptations out there. Hauntingly beautiful, with the hazy lighting, minimalist sets, and stark black and white contrast making for an etherial experience. My favorite shot is of the Witches, with one standing over a lake and the other two only seen upside down in the lakes reflection. There is a lot of symmetrical cinematography here (which I love!!). Of course, the acting is mind-blowing. You can't get Denzel Washington, Frances McDormand, and Brendon Gleeson and make a bad Shakespeare adaptation. That's just scratching the surface- Kathryn Hunter and Corey Hawkins are standouts as the Witches and Macduff.

Drive-Away Dolls is just fun. I was worried I wouldn't be able to concentrate on the film after Macbeth, but no. The film immediately hooks you with this crime plot, and then even more when introducing the contrasting main duo. Everyone working on this project is here for the absurdity. Some performances are exaggerated but thats the point! Drive-Away Dolls is just as much of a joy to look at- but for different reasonings. The pops of color and tight editing match the film's humor. Margaret Qualley stole the show as always and I'm curious to see what Geraldine Viswanathan does next. My English professor described Drive-Away Dolls as "the most lesbian film he had ever seen" and I can't tell if he's right... or just needs to watch more lesbian films.

I considered this experience to be a more niche? version of 2023's Barbenheimer. Like with Barbenheimer, I went into this expecting to like one film over the other, or for one film to overpower the other in terms of tone and heaviness. But in reality? I enjoyed both films the same amount! This is a double-feature that I would absolutely partake in again.
