🦈 Daily Shark Fact: 🦈
Broadnose Sevengill Sharks, are also known as Cow Sharks 😍 (I'm obsessed with cows), have different sets of teeth. The teeth on this shark’s lower jaw are comb shaped, while the teeth in its upper jaw are jagged. When biting large prey, the shark anchors its jaw with the lower teeth, then thrashes its head back and forth to saw off pieces of flesh with its upper teeth.
*As far as I can gather, they were formerly called cow sharks because of their docile nature and facial structure (small eyes, wide heads, blunt snouts).* The term refers to many species of six and sevengill sharks.*

HELLO. as some of you may know i went to a very Big aquarium on monday and i said i would post pictures. this is it. BUADBKASBDKJ
Tumblr media
this is a broadnose sevengill shark. when i came to the aquarium i was most excited to see these little guys (well, not technically little but theyre just Guys) as the name implies, they have seven gill slits instead of the regular five. you may also notice that they look a bit prehistoric. thats because they kind of are. sevengills are a type of cowshark which is in the same family as frilled sharks and they are some of the oldest sharks that are still swimming around down there. i personally love cowsharks i find them to be very cute and i was literally crying when i saw them in the tank
Tumblr media
this is a spiny dogfish. this is the most Normal picture i got of this guy the entire time. he was literally following me and i know it was the same guy because his nose was kind of bloody. which poor little guy but also it was very funny that he kept coming up to me.
Tumblr media
here is another picture of the same spiny dogfish. no joke he was following me. if i can upload the video i took i will.
ANYWAY. i dont actually know that much about spiny dogfish but i should get on that tbh. i will forever stand by my statement that dogfish sharks are the silliest guys in the whole ocean and i LOVE silly sharks
Tumblr media
this is a scalloped hammerhead. i dont actually know very much about this particular species either but i do know that they, as a whole, have a symbiotic relationship with barberfish. the hammerheads swim near the barberfish and when they jerk their tails, the barberfish know to go clean their teeth. its like a little shark dentist. in this particular picture, this was the only hammerhead in the tank, which has 1.2 million gallons of water in it and nothing on the bottom to imitate the open ocean for pelagic fish and turtles. (there were two turtles they were very cute but i am not a turtle guy so i will not be talking about them)
Tumblr media
this is a leopard shark. they had A Lot of leopard sharks everywhere. there were a lot in this tank that i took this picture in and then there were a few in the sevengills tank and there were like two or three in a shallower pool with some bat stingrays (which are adorable and i will be learning more about them because they are so fucking cute)
extra pictures under the cut :D

Broadnose sevengill shark (Notorynchus cepedianus)
Size: 2-3m (6-10ft)
Range & Habitat: Sevengill sharks can be found in most non-tropical waters worldwide. They tend to stay deep, around 50m (165 ft) near the seafloor.
Other: Yes, sevengill sharks do actually have seven gill slits (most sharks only have five). Besides this, they are identifiable by their noses, as their name also suggests, and long, wide shape. Broadnose sevengills have a speckled coloration on their back and only one dorsal fin that is noticeably further back than most other sharks. They tend to be more active than most other deep sea sharks, and can be aggressive at times.

This is Dorothy.  A Broadnose sevengill who privately dreams of living up to more than a shark’s serial killer reputation, leaving her with some admittedly troubling feelings.
On the surface, she’s a bit prickly, she gets into fights and she often dreads the idea of herself needing to depend on another for anything. But despite this and the fact her species is a notorious powerful apex predator, Dorothy often finds herself reflecting on her life, the aggressive lifestyle and all the fellow fish (sometimes even other sharks) feasted on by that of herself and the other sevengills she lives with.
This, surely, is a silly thing to be concerned about, Dorothy tells herself. Because sharks are supposed to be tough killers of the ocean, after all, that’s what everyone always says they are. Right?
…On the other hand, though, just because it’s what everyone says, does that really mean that it’s all she can be? That she, or any other shark, could not rise above it?
And she often wonders if, just maybe, there might be any other sharks like her out there, who think this way?
Of course, she can imagine the kinds of undesirable reactions she’d have from her peers, and other sharks who very much aren’t like her, if she ever voiced these kinds of thoughts aloud. And, she would insist, she doesn’t need ANYONE. So they are kept largely close to the chest and private. But, deep down, she knows she’d certainly love if, one day, she were to meet a shark who shares her perspective that sharks could, in fact, theoretically make moves to live up to more than their unsavory reputations in a meaningful way.
Until that day comes (assuming that it ever will/could), Dorothy supposes she will simply keep spending her days alone, daydreaming as she roams through the kelp forests between meals.

leopard catshark’s maximum lifespan as at least 15 years, while another source gives at least 19 years.
leopard catshark’s predators include larger sharks and marine mammals; it is one of the cartilaginous fish most often consumed by the broadnose sevengill shark (Notorynchus cepedianus).
leopard catshark are found in the waters off of South Africa.
leopard catsharks get their name from their beautiful, widely variable skin patterns. There are three recognized marking configurations.

I loved drawing this one. As someone commented on a dolphin I posted from the same family: Is like the pandas of the water. Again, what fascinates me the most about doing this animal encyclopedia is that I get to know mammals I didn't know existed and I can share that information with you all. Thank you for following and being interested. Let's see what can we learn from this wonderful dolphin.
Hector's Dolphin Hector's Dolphin lives exclusively on the coasts of New Zealand. They can live up to 22 years and are some of the smallest dolphins in the world. (If I'm not wrong the Vaquita is the smallest). Because of its size, predators can be numerous. Blue sharks, White sharks, Broadnose sevengill sharks, and probably Killer whales and Mako sharks. They hunt using echolocation which is basically finding prey using sound (Just as bats do). Their clicks (the sound they make) isn't as complex as other animals and travel short distances. Nonetheless is enough for them, since their environment is crowded and sound wouldn't be able to go long distances anyways. This animal is not in danger but its subspecies, the Māui Dolphin is probably one of the most endangered dolphins in the world, if not the most. We will talk about him in our next post. _____________________________________________ Credits: Hector's Dolphin Hector's Dolphin Ballenas, Delfines y Marsopas, Manuales de Identificación / Mark Carwardine, Martin Camm _____________________________________________ Thank you guys for your support! Video from my birthday trip down to the Oregon Coast Aquarium. I was fascinated by the halibut flats tank, but I know that sharks are what attracts viewers, so that's what I got. My time in halibut flats was mine alone, and I made the most of it. Would have been nice to go with friends, or even a single friend, but no one is free on any given Thursday; and also, I don't have any friends.
The beauty of the flatfish was offset by the great sadness I felt that I could not share in that beauty with close friends. I live my life alone. I will likely die alone. But along the way, hopefully I am able to capture the wonder I find in flatfish for all to see. That must be my legacy. Without it, I will blow away like dust in the annals of human history.
Witness me, and my passion.
