౨ৎ year-book club !

pairing: high school!hueningkai x reader

summary: year-book club was supposed to be easy, just take photos and make them look pretty. that is, until one boy decides to never show up.

word count: 1.1k

huening kai was elusive - far less elusive than riki nishimura (who you were convinced didn't even attend school), but still elusive. he was never there when you needed him to be. club photos were constantly rescheduled because he missed it, and then rescheduled again because he conveniently forgot.

it almost reached a point where your club president, somi, took the photos one day without him present. but, all the presidents of the other clubs protested.

"it's club photos!" kazuha groaned, "it's not like the world will end if we push it off another week. i promise, kai will be here! he's apart of the dance team just like the rest of us - so he deserves to be in the photo."

"i'll talk to him after school," soobin smiled, patting somi on the shoulder. "kai's varsity, he kind of needs to be in the photo. the kid just disappears sometimes, that's all."

"i swear, somi - i'll get him here next week!" hyunjin promised, "plus, art club is super flexible. it's not like we have a set club schedule or anything. we're more like a relaxed after school activity!"

those promises, somehow, always bought kai more time.

and, somehow, he still was never there.

and after nearly two months, you had yet to see kai. to be fair, you probably did see him, and just simply didn't recognise him.

you didn't know the boy too well - only the trouble he had been causing your club.

sure, you were the same year, but you didn't take any of the same classes, and you definitely weren't in the same clubs.

although, you eventually did run into him one day after school.

whilst you were heading towards the gymnasium to take photos for the sports section of the yearbook, you bumped into kai.

though you didn't realise it was him at first, he one hundred percent knew it was you - somehow.

"(y/n)!" he managed to squeak out, already attempting to leave. he watched as your eyebrows furrowed and you attempted to decipher who was standing in front of you. and he watched in horror as it dawned on you that you finally had caught him.

"kai," you smiled, letting out a short laugh. "somi has been looking for you! your clubs need to get their photos taken for the yearbook, but you keep missing the meetings we're scheduled for!"

he nodded quickly, eyes darting around the empty hallway.

there was no escape.

"right-" he began after a moment of silence on his part, as you awaited his answer. "i'll, uh, i'll be there. i swear - is somi the one taking the photos?"

his words were rushed, and all jumbled together. the poor boy sounded as if he were going to collapse at any moment.

you simply shrugged, unbothered by the sight of the panicked boy.

"it depends on the day, we take turns. it's a lot for somi to handle on her own, so right now she's doing clubs and i'm doing candids. but we swap off." you explained, watching as he began to calm himself down.

he nodded once again, now seemingly at ease. "okay, yeah - apologise to her for me. i'll be there."

and with that, he sped off - he really did utilise those long legs.

though you didn't know it at the time, poor kai harbored arguably the largest crush on you, and even the idea of having to be in the same room as you for something so minimal as photos made his heart feel as if it was going to beat out of his chest.

he'd never tell you that, obviously.

the two of you would laugh about it later in life.

"yeah, somi, it was definitely him - no! i didn't call you. why - okay, yeah." you grumbled into your phone as soon as kai was out of sight, somi taking every chance to cut you off.

"you should've called me! i could've gotten all the presidents together and we could've done photos!" she whined on the other end, dreading how now the photos were pushed back another few weeks.

convenient timing to finally be finding kai on the friday before mid-year exams.

"you're not even at school right now, somsom, he would've scrambled before you got here." you sighed, tucking your phone between your ear and shoulder as you pulled open the door to the gymnasium.

the track and field team was practicing indoors.

perfect timing.

"plus, he seemed like he was about to have a heart attack! god, you should've seen him - i think the kid's got some issue with his photo being taken." laughing slightly, you put down your bag before waving the captain, minhyuk.

somi began to whine again before you quickly cut her off, muttering how now you had to do your job and would talk more with her later.

after a brief talk with minhyuk, you noticed kai enter the gym. he was on track and field? what didn't he do?

kai seemed to instantly notice you too. instantly, his cheeks flushed pink and he hurried off to apologize to minhyuk for being late.

you could partially hear him as he spoke, talking so fast it could almost be considered rapping.

"huta!" he huffed, head down as he spoke to the captain.

"i'm sorry i'm late! i ran into an issue earlier!"

minhyuk, or apparently huta as he was called, nodded at him, well adjusted to kais - well, odd behavior.

"it's alright, kai." the older boy assured, waving off his teammate to go warmup and join the others in the drill.

you got right to work, quickly taking photos and speaking briefly with different members of the team you recognized.

"i'm surprised kai's functioning with you here!" chaewon laughed, stretching her legs out as she prepared for high jump.

you chose to ignore the comment, taking it just as kai being camera shy. it would match his behavior.

you moved on to the other side of the gym, where those poor sprinters were practicing fifty meter dashes.

"wonbin!" you called out, noticing a freshman you had study hall with. he smiled in response, posing quickly for a photo with fellow freshmen sohee and anton.

kai was there too, watching uncomfortably from the other end of the drill. he was already sweaty, and tired. it was hot in the gym. or was it just him who felt suffocated?

he saw you taking photos in his general direction and quickly turned his back, turning right into yeonjun who stared at him with a knowing grin.

"your girlfriends here, hyuka!" the senior teased, watching as kai momentarily malfunctioned.

"yeonjun - we're - she doesn't know i exist?" he stammered, his last words sounding less like a statement and more like a question.

you didn't know he existed, right? he wasn't making a total fool of himself? there was absolutely no recognition of him?

in all actuality, you barely did know of kai's existence. and though later in life, through some twist of fate, you would come to know him better, in that moment he was just another boy.

he was a nobody, and you were just a girl in year-book club.

for now at least.
