#but it feels even more scary with ofmd…

Hmm some thoughts…
Something that makes me sad after ofmd s2 is the fact that I feel scared to show it to my friends and family. More scared than after s1. Not because I think it’s bad but because of how queer and sincere it is.
In s1 the queerness could be somewhat brushed aside by cishet audiences. But now with s2 it’s so explicit! The queerness is so constantly present!! Stede and Ed yearning for each other, wee John in drag, izzy wearing makeup for the first time, Ed imagining Stede as a beautiful merman coming to save him, the poly characters, I could keep going…
And all of that makes me feel so happy and it’s so wonderful to see a show so unapologetically queer. But it also makes me nervous to show it to people at the same time cause it feels like they’re seeing too much of me. I’m scared they’ll see the slightly silly but super sincere queerness as too much or as cringe and so I just don’t want to let them see at all. I wanna hold ofmd close to my heart and not let anyone touch it cause I feel like if they call ofmd cringe they’re saying the same to me…
Anyway… I love ofmd so much. It’s so sweet it’s so silly it’s so sincere and romantic and it’s so dear to me!!!! Goodnight!!!!!

We all know OFMD has been tremendously healing to watch when you're queer, but it's honestly just amazing to see as a person of color, too. I am so, so used to characters of color being the only non-White cast member, or stereotypes, or being told that "hey, x Disney character is Black now, aren't you happy about that?"
And OFMD has so many characters of color that are allowed to be complex and nuanced. I'm almost never able to enjoy historical fiction because of how the genre often treats characters of color, but OFMDs characters of color feel like real people who I know in my family and community. Olu isn't a big scary Black man, he's so sweet and practical and a little bit awkward around his crush. Frenchie is comically superstitious and able to pull off an awesome con. Roach loves piratical violence but he also makes lovely assortments of tapas and is delightfully offended when Stede insults his cooking. Jim is allowed to be cool and mysterious and a little bit goofy. Fang is so precious I smile every time I think about him. And don't even get me started on how amazing it is to see an indigenous Jewish man as a romantic lead!
One of the worst things about historical fiction, for me at least, is how all the characters of color are almost always there just for trauma porn. It so often feels like Black characters especially are just there for White audiences to feel bad for. But in OFMD, anti-racism and anti-colonialism are baked into the narrative. Racism exists, but we always get the last laugh, whether that's by knifing a racist through the hand or setting a boat of rich racist assholes on fire.
It encourages me to feel like I can ask for more from other TV shows. I don't have to just roll my eyes and put up with yet another historical drama where the only Black character's arc revolves around the trauma of slavery. It's so refreshing to see. I can't wait for more of it in season two!

Hey there Lovelies. Happy Taika Tuesday! Did you have a good day today?
Dad's comments today brought out a lot of folks sharing their stories on therapy and I wanted to chat about it for a moment.
First of all, if you're delving out for the first time (or trying again after years of not going)-- just know, you're being really brave. Depending on where you come from and your background, mental health may not have been something that your family prioritized (or maybe it was but therapy was never an option). It can be pretty scary to talk to someone you don't know about your inner most worries. You're taking a big step, and I'm proud of you for that.
You've looked at your situation, whatever tough things you're experiencing, and you've decided to prioritize you and your mental health-- and that's amazing. It's a hard decision to make sometimes, and as simple as it should be, it's not that easy. I'm so happy that mental health is talked about and therapy is so much more accepted now a days. Growing up I was in a situation where we "didn't talk about ourselves to other people" and that can be so very lonely when you are feeling really down.
I wanted to mention a couple things that I didn't know going into therapy-- in case they help at all, but obviously every experience is different, so feel free to take or leave the advice :)
Firstly, therapy doesn't solve things overnight. Sometimes it'll take weeks, or months, or years to unpack some of the things you really need to work through. It'll take time. When I went to therapy for the first time, for some reason I thought I'd just be able to dump all my problems out on a table and the therapist would pick one and we'd work on it. Instead it was a gradual thing, where they got to know me, I got to know them, and the more we talked the more we were able to unravel. I just don't want you to get discouraged if it takes longer than you planned, it's definitely a process.
Secondly, something to remember, is not all therapists are going to vibe with you. It took me a few tries before I found a therapist that really worked well with me. If you don't feel like it's helping, consider looking into a different therapist, sometimes it's not the therapy that you're struggling with, but just a mismatched vibe with your therapist. If you can help it-- don't give up right away, try another, I was really grateful that I did.
Thirdly, and if you're like me, this is a tough one. Remember to advocate for yourself. Sometimes a therapist may want to try certain therapies, or exercises, and it's something you've tried and just isn't working for you, or they want to go a medication route and you dont, or maybe they're saying something you disagree with. Remember you're your own advocate here, and they're here to help you, not hinder you from getting to where you want to be. Speak up for yourself if you can.
Lastly, therapy, especially the first few, don't always end in happy feelings. Think of it like a muscle in your leg that you haven't been using for years...and it's atrophied. You have to build that muscle back up, and it can really hurt occasionally during that time. You might leave therapy feeling worse once or twice because you're finally letting out some of that vitriol you've been holding onto for so long. It should feel better later.. maybe the next day, but it may not feel great the same day. That's a perfectly reasonable experience to have, and if you feel awesome, that is too!
Anyway lovelies, not sure if that helps, but I wanted to share it just in case it helped someone.
Whether you're going to therapy tomorrow, or soon, or ever, or never, I am really proud of you. You're doing what you need for you, and that's the most important thing. You deserve good things, and healthy thoughts and positive feelings. You really do. You got this <3

IZZY HANDS FIC RECS! (I want em', I've got em')
What is everyone reading in OFMD fandom right now?
I am currently mostly caught up on my 'to read list' and YALL. I'd love more recomendations!! I will take ANYTHING! I will read ANYTHING!
I'd love to start a chat, so I'd love y'all to leave something you've read recently down below!
I've also added some tasty ones I've read recently down below separated by ship! THEY ARE AMAZING!
Frenchie/Izzy:
The Poetry of Flowers: By Aletea [Rated:Teen. Complete]
Frenchie falls hard and fast. It takes Izzy a little while longer to catch up. This is the slow courtship of Izzy Hands, using flowers.
This fic was written for OFMD Aro/Ace Week 2024.
[Personal notes: OMG-It's so *GOOD*. This has a bit of S2, but mostly takes place post S2, if that tempts you, READ IT. This got me back into the hobby Frenchie does in the fic and AHHH]
you steal my breath away: By ChangeTheCircumstances [Rated: Mature. Complete]
Something is clearly off about Izzy, but when Frenchie sees him petting a cat, it finally clicks. Izzy is a fucking witch! In order to protect the crew, Frenchie makes the next obvious step in logic: he has to kill him.
[Personal notes: I feel this one is just 'if you like Frenchie/Izzy, you've READ THIS- but it's so earnest! SOLID fic the 'realizations' on both ends are really amazing and well written, reread it if you have]
Warnings from the Bottom of My Heart: By scrunglebungus [Rated: Teen. Complete]
Izzy likes Frenchie's voice. He appreciates his music and his long pretty fingers as they move across his Lute. He doesn't have a crush. He DOESN'T.
...and if he did, it's not like he's obvious about it.
(Spoiler: He is) AKA: 5 times Izzy is given the shovel talk + 1 time it's given on his behalf
[An alternate S2 fic written before S2! It leans a bit more 'Izzy needs to redeem himself' than I usually read, but all the Izzy & Crew interactions are SO in character it's scary. That and the Captains are so well realized on top of Izzy and Frenchie being great. LOVE IT]
Roach/Izzy:
Take Up Thy Stethoscope And Walk: bongbingbong [Rated:Mature. Complete]
Of Roach, the scientist - although, that those ghoulish practices he carries out should be called science is a subject on which some might disagree - I feel like I should speak with extreme terror. In laying down those events which transpired during that winter in the turning over of our century, it seems as though on paper they create an impression of little more than a tawdry tale, a freak show in writing for the morbidly curious. It’s no question that I spent a great deal of that time afraid for my life, and for my soul. And yet, I tell you - I have never felt quite so alive as I did during the days I have spent living in the graveyard.
I wonder what this might say about me. What a pair we make.
Izzy Hands dies. Roach brings him back to life. This is the easiest part of the process.
Written for the OFMD Reverse Big Bang 2023, with art from Tarouofthesea!
[Omg. OMFG. I love this fic. I love this Frankenstein'ian/Reanimator fic SO MUCH. It is just SOOOOOOO-! AMAZING characterization, stunning art, the way everything pays off plot/reference-wise! LOVE IT!]
Blackbeard's Roach: bongbingbong [Rated: Teen. Unfinished. 4/6]
What if Roach had ended up on the Queen Anne's Revenge before the events of the show?
(A alternative universe Roach who wears leather and cooks for Blackbeard's crew, and flirts outrageously with their first mate)
[ANOTHER bongbingbong Roach/Izzy fic!!! I love the way bongbingbong writes Roach/Izzy. It's not finished, but I am SO excited to see how it goes! In this one, even though it's unfinished, I feel it GETS the pre-Bonnet life Izzy lived on the Queen Anne. If you like probably autistic Izzy, READ THIS! That, and Roach and Izzy's relationship is SO GOOD. I won't spoil it, but the mutual trust is really strong!]
Stede/Izzy:
The Mount: rainingrenee [Explicit. Complete (WLW smut<3)]
Stede Bonnet enters the Revenge self defence class expecting to learn something.
She meets instructor Butch Dyke Supreme Izzy Hands and gets more than she bargained for.
[God. I love women. This smutty 8k fic is AMAZING and honestly any WLW in this fandom needs some love!]
When It Takes Hold: krill collins (krillcollins)[Explicit: 5/12]
Izzy Hands, a 90s heartthrob turned casting director with an impressively average back catalogue, never foresaw his career trajectory bringing him back to television. He certainly never would've guessed that his big return would be on Strictly Come Dancing. At least it breaks the monotony, even if he's paired with the insufferable twat, the Gentleman of the Ballroom.
It's the kind of fast-paced environment that Izzy was sure he'd long-since grown out of, and he's sure he's not going to make it past the first few weeks. Still, the more he finds himself enjoying it, the more he hopes he'll stay, and he finds himself more in love with life than he's been in years.
Still, the talk of the curse puts Izzy on edge. Bonnet is strangely captivating and seems more interested in Izzy than Edward has in years. Izzy may not believe in them, but that's the thing about curses: once they take hold...
[OMG. OMFG?!?!? Do you know how much I love 'Dancing with the Stars' AU? NO? Well. For every fandom I enter, my first tags I search are 'time loop' 'time travel' and 'dancing'. This fic is EVERYTHING I love about the trope. I have been following this fic from Day 1 and OMG. I love it. Can't recommend it enough]
The Island: triedunture [Explicit: 10/? Updates every Friday-SteddyHands but Izzy/Stede focused]
Stede Bonnet wakes up in the little cottage he and Ed share—except Ed's not there. Izzy is. Stede is somehow stuck in a world where Ed died and Izzy lived. As he struggles to get back to his real life, it becomes clear that things on the island are very different from what he first assumed....
Updates every Friday.
[A fic that, if the premise sounds cool-READ IT! It's a bit out there concept wise, but SO fun, and a great look at how Stede and Izzy interact in a 'do I want him' type of relationship. This fic has been my weekly bed time story, and I can't wait to see how the drama UNFOLDS!]

Ofmd season 2 episode 6 spoilers!!
The way they showed Ed and Stede's first time was so interesting to me. First of all, it happened directly after Stede killed someone for the first time, so automatically, Stede was in a very strange and vulnerable headspace. And that's not to say he was taken advantage of--he very much initiated it--but it happened while both of their identities were up in the air. Stede was adjusting to being an *actual* killer, while Ed had just apologized earlier for shooting Izzys leg.
And then we see Ed sitting on the bed, still fully clothed in leather while a shirtless Stede closes the curtains. And what interests me the most is that we don't even see his face. All we see is Ed looking up from the bed, and Stede looming close to the camera, mirroring the way that Blackbeard was first introduced to the show--facing away from the camera and smoking a pipe, obscured with power and mystery. The fact that their first time co-occurred with such a dramatic shift in dynamics is a little concerning but I have total faith that they will *eventually* talk their shit out).
I don't fully believe Ed when he said that night was a mistake. I do believe he has commitment issues like a bitch, and when Stede started to become more like him, he got scared. We can see him pulling away, sitting in the corner of Spanish Jackie's as Stede revels in his infamy. He wants to truly make amends to the people he's hurt and traumatized, and he can't do that if he's with someone who's drinking, and making people walk the plank, and lighting people on fire.
And it's not because Stede is evil--sure he's a bitch, and occasionally ends a life or two, but that's not who he truly is--its who he's trying to be. A murderer, not a bitch--cause he is a bitch, but he's trying to be a murderer, because his whole life he's been bullied and mocked for not being manly enough. For not being a good husband, for being sensitive and soft, and well, gay. And Ed doesn't understand that this is why he wants to be like him, like Blackbeard (because they haven't fucking talked about it), because for Ed, being Blackbeard ruined his life. It nearly ended it (and others) and he doesn't want Stede to fall down the same path.
So yeah, Ed decides to become a fisherman, because like he said, he has no idea who he is. He still has so much healing to do, so many wrongs to right, and it's just so fucking tragic that now is the time when they need each other the most, but they're moving so rapidly in opposite directions, and neither of them know how to communicate it.
I think Anne and Mary were right--they are fucking 14 year old boys. I mean, Stede literally called Ed a coward for leaving instead of chasing after him. But they're not going to turn out like them. Ed and Stede are going to grow up, and they're going to talk, and they're going to heal each other's scars instead of causing each other more. They're going to learn how to commit to each other and stay even when things get hard or scary. (David Jenkins please for the love of all that is holy let them better each other and also fuck again but after they come to terms with who they are and want to be)
Edit: actually, hot take, but I think them having sex actually was a mistake. And yeah, Ed left instead of talking about it, but still. Their relationship is still so new and unstable, and I wish they waited until they were in a more grounded place. I wish they would have reckoned with their opposing paths before doing something so intimate and vulnerable, but I have a feeling they're going to reckon with it by the end of the season.
Ed asked Stede to go slow for a reason. And yeah, they both consented, which is more important than anything, but damn, it happened so fucking fast. I mean, they are gay, so. (David Jenkins I am in your walls please make Ed and Stede practice healthy sexuality and communicate about their life goals so they can prevent further miscommunication and heartbreak)

The use of genre as unreliable narrator in ofmd
„But it’s a comedy!”
Tumblr media
(I had to, sorry)
Ok, people usually take this argument out when talking about there being jokes, or getting a happy ending. It’s not dark fantasy like Game of Thrones, it’s not a mature drama, like Better Call Saul.
But in most stories the darker genre is justified by the fact that that’s realistic, that’s how the real world works. Going with that explanation, writing a fantasy like this is like an oxymoron (I’m not saying it’s a bad choice, just pointing out). Recently tho, it became popular to think that a story is meaningful or mature only if it’s realistic, the dark-way-realistic, if you get what I mean. If the story is too optimistic, the ending too happy, it’s apparently not realistic enough and so - silly. If the story wants to talk about something deep but there’s not enough misery, someone will inevitably come and point out how in real life it wouldn’t be like this and so the message is meaningless.
Going back on track: in most stories the genre is like the laws of physics of the story. Once set they’re absolute. You can subvert the tropes, cliches, expectations, but the genre stays intact. If in a story taking place in a genre expected to be more serious, more grand the author puts too many jokes, it’s bad writing. It’s against the laws of this world and shouldn’t be there.
And usually it’s ok, we have a lot of genre, we can take new approach to them, make them fresh, mix them. But I haven’t found that many stories that use A genre (not “Their genre”) so much as a tool, so explicitly as a tool to show characters perspective and worldview.
Let’s just quote what I’ve already said, because it was rather well put imo:
“Season 1 is more comedy like, because it’s from Stede’s point of view, mostly. Sometimes the lighthearted music actually doesn’t fit the scene, unless we take into account that it’s about how Stede sees this. Stede’s flashbacks aren’t funny, his marriage isn’t funny. Stede cares about Ed and so his flashbacks are treated seriously too, even more so (cause you know, Stede doesn’t care about himself much). But Izzy is treated as a joke. Stede doesn’t like him and isn’t afraid of him (because he doesn’t know he lives only because Ed forbade Izzy from killing Stede) and so scenes that are sad and depressing from Izzy’s perspective don’t get an appropriate music (like in e6 for example). The world is shown through Stede’s eyes. Ed is cool and scary and treated very seriously, Stede tries to hide his very real pain under his adventures and Izzy… He doesn’t care about Izzy. The scenes where Stede is scared make him look pathetic but when it’s Ed, it’s completely serious, because Stede treats Ed’s fear seriously, but finds his own shameful and, well, pathetic. The comedic tone is the unreliable narrator here.
Episode 8 isn’t so much comedic anymore. Stede feels out of place, pushed aside, and the whole episode feels like that. Episode 9 isn’t a comedy either, it’s seeped in self doubt and lingering regrets. Episode 10 has comedic vibe mostly during Stede’s adventurous escape and kinda during Ed’s pink robe phase. Kinda, because alone with Lucius, there’s no jokes, with Izzy too. The comedy stays on deck, with the crew, Stede’s crew that as a whole goes under the adventurous light vibe. But at the end of season 1 the vibe of the show completely changes. There’s no jokey comedy anymore. Yeah, Stede’s still a bit silly now and then, because that’s how he feels about himself. But at Ed’s Revenge there’s only 100% drama.”
Another thing is, with every episode, we get more and more alone time with Ed, he becomes a protagonist of his own. His alone scenes aren’t funny. Usually those are somber or depressing. In e10 their two perspectives part the moment Stede runs away. Since then there’s Stede’s world and Ed’s world. It’s Ed’s sky that’s pink. It’s Stede’s world where the assassination attempt is funny. Ed tries to maintain Stede’s reality on the Revenge, but it turns out bleak in comparation. There’s no comforting blanket of escapism and naivety. No one to nourish the optimism and the atmosphere of safety without Stede being here. It’s becoming more and more Ed’s world again. Depressing, dangerous, more realistic. Because Ed lost his faith in Stede’s world, it the value of love and comfort.
The divide is even more visible in episodes 1-3 of s2. Just what people were laughing about: Stede’s crew gets soup and Ed’s fights for their life. Stede most of the time bottles up his negative emotions, keeping his “realm” light and adventurous. Very rarely he let’s himself to actually feel his real emotions (in the rain, during the night talk with Lucius, maybe with Zheng, tho I’m not sure if it’s not more thinking than feeling at that moment really). Stede’s keeping his darkness hidden, focused on hope. When they meet Lucius and then Ed’s crew, the little cracks starts showing up. We start to see less of a humor and more of sincerity. Season 2 is less comedic and more sincere in it’s form. Because that’s how Stede feels, after realizing his feelings for Ed, after realizing what’s important to him, after getting him back. (He couldn’t accept Ed’s dead, so he wasn’t << “I’m not ready to believe that”) His world is more real. It’s not ignorance, naivety or detachment anymore, rather hope, optimism and having an actual goal. In season 1 Stede just wanted to run away from his life, now he had a specific goal to fix what he destroyed (no matter how much of it was really his fault).
Going back to Ed’s perspective in e1-3, we are told about his emotional state, for example, by weather. It’s also interesting how at the beginning of e2 Ed’s crying session is treated seriously, showing him feeling empty, abandoned, longing all at once. But the next day, when he recalls the incident, it’s framed like a joke. You know, how when you get an emotional breakdown and then later think “damn, that was embarrassing and unnecessary”? It was something like that. When he torments Izzy, it’s dark af, because he sees himself as a monster. The tone of a scene doesn’t say how actually important/serious/deep/meaningful the scene really is, but how the character sees it. Just as Stede saw his fear as pathetic in s1, Ed treats like that his sincerity. His abandonment is only deserved and him crying about it is pathetic, his self hate and violence in the afterlife just a dry fact, his fisherman era suddenly taking a jump into comedy the moment he feels he failed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We can see Ed’s and Stede’s realities getting more similar, because their view on reality is getting more towards the middle. Ed gets more forgiveness and softness and it isn’t depicted as ridiculous. Stede's adventures get more bloody (the cursed ship), threats more real (Ned Low’s tortures). Buttons change was so out of the blue and unrealistic, because that’s how Ed saw the concept of change. He was so sure it’s not real and that’s why it was like a magic. That’s why he was alone, while witnessing it. Izzy was able to survive all that happened to him, because Ed believed he's indestructible and will always have his back, even if he doesn't deserve it. (if I'm right, then it's the presence of Stede that killed Izzy)
The weather, the colors show Ed’s emotions:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
While Ed’s emotions were muddled and confusing in e5, we got the fog, when he was happy in the beginning, but then started to feel more and more unsure in e7 – the colors changed from yellow to gray, when he was happy about how Calypso’s birthday turned out, but then Ned Low appeared -  the colors changed from romantic pink and purple, to disturbing green and blue suddenly, as if his past, his sins poured a bucket of cold water on his head. When he thinks he will finally die, finally made that decision, he’s relieved, and sunny weather mirrors that, but in his last moment, when he has to face it, they’re in the middle of a storm. His gravy backet is cold, cloudy and so windy it’s hard to hear anything. Hell, the first time we see Queen Anne it’s in its own dark weather!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Stede, becoming “real boy” and then “a man” makes the world around him more realistic as well. After Ned tortured his crew and Ed, Stede kills the guy. After becoming suddenly famous, the world takes a step back and everything is light and funny around him again, no real danger, Stede kills the guy without even trying and it’s funny and cool, because He feels cool about all of it. But when Ed says that last night was a mistake and then leaves, there’s no more cool Stede. Suddenly his happy adventure is falling apart, his crew doesn’t want to follow him just because (because why were they always together since the end of s1?), his behavior isn’t cool anymore, but pathetic, Steak knife probably died, his tricks don’t work, because he doesn’t believe they would, not really. He doesn’t feel like it’s some cool pirate duel from pirate tales, like in e6. He feels like a failure. Everyone left him, whatever he does, apparently it’s not enough for people to stay, and when he hit the rock bottom, the Republic of Pirates gets destroyed.
The way the world works is related to what Stede and Ed believe in atm. But if they're together on screen, it's Stede's beliefs that shape reality.
So I don’t think they changed the rules of the world in e8. The rules were changing all the time, and the world became deadly during ep 6-7, somewhere there. The tone of the episode didn’t warn us, because Ed was happy most of the time, and so the color palette of the episode is light.  The left-side rule didn’t work, because Stede wasn’t as naïve as in s1 (he wasn’t sure Ed was right, but decided to believe him). Stede’s crazy plan didn’t work as in e1&2s1, because he was more aware of the risk. Stede knew they could die, knew it’s dangerous, and so it was. Ironic really.

The more I rewatch the first episode of OFMD, the less convinced I am that anyone besides Pete and maybe Roach actually wanted to commit mutiny (which, tbc is not the same thing as saying they were against the idea). Right off the bat, as Pete is trying to gear everyone up for mutiny, everyone seems to be largely ignoring him at first in favor of focusing on making their flags. But even once the conversation gets going, I just don’t get the vibe that this a group of people eager to see Stede dead. Running down the list:
Buttons: Obviously against
Oluwande: Obviously against
Pete: Obviously pro
Roach: Is probably pro? He does raise his hand when Pete is asking who’s with him, but he’s seems hesitant about it. Hard to say if that’s because he’s uncertain about committing mutiny, or if he’s just reluctant to *say* that he wants to commit mutiny.
Wee John: Votes pro mutiny, but is clearly primarily interested in setting things on fire. So in his case I would say it’s not that he wants commit a mutiny so much as he wants to commit arson and is not opposed to a mutiny as a way to make that happen.
Jim: Unclear, as they never say anything or give any indication one way or the other, though I’m inclined to think they’d just side with whatever Olu wanted to do.
The Swede: Totally unclear. He never expresses his opinion on the matter one way or the other. Him pointing out that Lucius reads may be him trying to shoot down Olu’s suggestion, but it could also just be a statement of fact. I ultimately land on probably doesn’t actively want to commit mutiny or he would have more obviously expressed support for the idea, but isn’t against it either.
Lucius: This is where we start to get into a deeper analysis territory and there’s a lot more interpretation going on. Lucius also votes pro, and he definitely seems to find Stede annoying, but at the same time Lucius character does not seem to be one of someone who would prefer to serve on a more traditional violent and bloodthirsty pirate ship. We know from episode 9 and the whole “strong reader/writer” thing that Lucius is willing to throw his lot in with a side he does not like to protect himself if need be, and also crucial here is that Lucius does not see the preceding conversation or the lackluster support that Pete is getting. It’s very possible that Lucius thought everyone else was more in favor of the mutiny than they actually were, and so also pretended to be more gungho about it than he actually was in order to make sure he didn’t get lumped in with Stede and caught in the fall out.
Frenchie: He doesn’t actually express an opinion one way or the other either, but I get the feeling he’s actually anti-mutiny (if for no other reason than he knows a cushy gig when he sees one), but just not strongly enough to voice that when he’s not sure where majority opinion is going to land. Because we do see a lot of little shows of support for Stede from Frenchie, “maybe Captain’s trying a new type of slow pirating” in particular is the first time anyone in the entire show defends Stede, and also when Pete is trying to rule everyone up into a mutiny, Frenchie’s comment is “mutiny or no, we’re going to need a scary flag.”

Sicktember 2023- "talentless", OFMD Ed/Stede
Sicktember 2023- prompt #7 “you’re a jerk when you’re sick”
Ed’s not good at being sick.
He’s not good at any of this, really, but for some reason a bunch of people decided that his flag was scary or whatever and at this point will pretty much fall all over themselves giving him all of their shit.
Well, and of course there’s Izzy, who’s still mad at him, but who’d kill half the people in the Caribbean in the name of Blackbeard if Ed asked him to.
Izzy, who’d recently come back from a covert little operation all congested and wet leather, hoarse voice even rougher than usual.
Izzy’s fault, then, for sharing more than just intel.
Ed sniffles, and then stops midway through wiping his nose on his sleeve when Stede comes into the bedroom from the auxiliary closet, looking radiant and healthful in a lavender coat.
“Sweetheart,” Stede says. “Don’t take this the wrong way, but you look like shit.”
Ed gives him the most nonplussed look.
“And hearing that makes me feel even better,” he says, and clears his throat.
“Do you want anything?” Stede asks.
“Nope,” Ed says, popping the ‘p.’ “I can take care of myself. Did just fine before you got here, and I seem to recall that when you got here, you were the one needed caretaking.” He clears his throat again, looking away when Stede shoots him a knowing look.
“Well,” Ed says, standing from where he’d been sitting on the edge of the bed. “Time to go check on the crew.”
“Isn’t it storming?” Stede asks.
“All the better reason to check on them.”
“There’s no way you’d want to stay down here? I’m sure they’re doing fine.”
“It’s mostly your crew, Stede,” Ed says in a patronizing tone, which is only ruined a little bit by sniffling. “They’re better at arts and crafts than sailing.”
“Fine,” Stede says. “Enjoy your pneumonia.”
Stede does regret saying that, later.
***
Ed’s not good at being sick.
It’s drippy and it’s achy and he can’t find the words for how to make it better. Everything he says comes out of his mouth harsh, barbed, a stick sharpened at both ends. Stede had been right; it is storming, but even so he’d appeared on deck about twenty minutes after Ed, seemingly not concerned about getting his new lavender outfit wet.
“How’s it going up here?” Stede says in a bright tone, and Ed can almost hear the eye-roll that Jim gives. Ed feels about the same, except worse because there’s something with claws in his throat.
“Boss’s all wet,” Izzy growls, and Stede lifts a blonde eyebrow. It’s incredibly stupid how good his hair looks when it’s rain-dampened, curling more at the edges, haloing his face.
Ed sniffs, trying to surreptitiously wipe his nose.
“Gotta go check on something belowdeck,” he manages, after Stede looks like he’s going to step forward and shove a handkerchief into Ed’s face or something equally embarrassing. Ed doesn’t wait or attempt any further explanation- by the time he’s down the stairs, he has to stop and lean back against the wall for a moment.
Izzy’d been right- he is all wet, and he feels chilled to the bone, still achy and out-of-sorts. Ed coughs, then swears as he hears the distinctive sound of Stede’s heeled shoes coming down the stairs.
“Sweetheart?” Stede’s voice calls, and Ed forces himself to straighten up. “Are you sure you didn’t want to head back to our quarters?”
He actually does have a handkerchief in his hand now, and he’s moving towards Ed with it with that little creased forehead look he gets whenever Ed tells what he’d thought was a funny story about being an adolescent on Hornigold’s ship that actually sounds pretty fucked up once he hears it again.
“M’fine,” Ed says, hating the way his voice goes all raspy. “Just gonna check on our stores.”
Stede’s gently taking him by the elbow now, still with that concerned expression.
“That’s not your job, love, I’m sure it’s all taken care of.”
Ed twists away, out of Stede’s grasp.
“Everything on this ship is my job. I’m the captain, aren’t I?”
Maybe that would’ve come out better if he hadn’t had to cough afterwards, but he’s sure that Stede gets the point.
Ed glares at Stede for a long moment, and then Stede takes a step back.
“Noted,” he says, and even though Ed had pushed him away, now that Stede’s leaving, Stede is all Ed wants.
***
There isn’t really anything to do in the store room, but Ed spends too much time in there anyway, feeling worse and worse. He can’t seem to get warm, and his throat feels like it’s on fire, and not the fun kind of fire like when he and Stede had set that ship of rich idiots ablaze.
He falls into a kind of doze, too stubborn to simply creep back to the cabin and crawl under the covers. Stede probably hates him now.
Just thinking of Stede brings a kind of visual miasma of him, a hazy version of his lavender coat. And an auditory hallucination, too- the sound of Stede’s heeled shoes, stepping even closer. And– oh, it’s actually Stede.
Ed wants to apologize, wants to tell Stede that he hadn’t meant it, that he’s just sick and miserable and his throat hurts and his head hurts and–
All that comes out is a small whining sound, raspy and painful.
“Oh, sweetheart.” Stede’s voice is soft and warm. His eyes are gentle, and suddenly Stede’s bent over and Ed’s burrowing himself into Stede’s neck, stifling a cough into Stede’s chest.
Ed starts to say something but has to keep coughing, and Stede just tsks at him and presses his lovely cool hand against Ed’s neck.
“Let’s get you back into bed, hmm?” Stede’s saying, and then he’s pulling Ed up to a stand, supporting him as they make their way back to the cabin. “Get you in bed and get you cooled down.”
Stede’s strong arm around his waist, his hand on Ed’s forehead, the crinkle of concern in Stede’s gaze- it all speaks to what’s coming next: the tepid bath, the cold cloths for Ed’s head, the tinctures of honey and rum. Throughout it all, Stede there by his side, murmuring and fussing.
Ed’s still not good at being sick, but Stede is wonderful at taking care of him.

Fyre's OFMD Fic Masterlist - Pre S2 Roundup!
S2 is almost here and I can already feel my brain begin to fizz and froth despite life trying to steal my time and focus! So, before it hits and eats me all over again, here's the full round up of 780k of fic written in 18 months 😁
SERIES/COLLECTIONS
Immersion ® - 13k A series of short soft scenes of Stede and Ed being soft, featuring the clothing swap, Ed’s introduction to the lavender soap, some shaving and bath time
Toxic (E) - 7.3k Izzy has an urge and Calico Jack knows just how to scratch it, whether Izzy likes it or not. (Please heed all warnings and tags if you venture into this series)
Penetrative Gays (E) - 13k A silly series following every post-e3 stabbing incident in the smuttiest possible way :)
Turning Tides ® - 81k My novel-length speculative season 2, picking up immediately after the end of S1, featuring everyone, multiple POVs, drama, shenanigans and fuckeries galore.
Storm Surge ® - 62k My second novel-length series and my speculative S3, following on directly from Turning Tides. Even more POVs and far, far, far more fuckeries than you can shake a stick at.
Our Flag Means Death - JanAUry (Mixed) - 17k A series of 1k one-shots based on the Jan-AU-ry prompts list
Write It Through As a Crew (Various) - 12k A collection of 1k prompts/one-shots/missing scenes from Turning Tides and Storm Surge
ONE SHOTS
The Biblical Sense (E)  - 2.6k The first time for the lads, written before David Jenkins dropped 9 & 10 and irreversibly hurled me into pirate hell.

Bit of a Clothes Horse (E) - 9k Written in collaboration with Aivelin - the missing scene where Stede helps Ed get ready for the fancy party boat. And all that comes after ;)
Type ® - 2.3k Mary Allamby Bonnet gets a bit of a fright when she finds a scary-looking man with a sword in her front room.
Magnolia (E) - 5k When Ed - no, the Kraken - catches Stede Bonnet, he wants to use him and ruin him, but it… doesn’t quite go to plan.
Fancy (E) - 7k Written in collaboration with Aivelin - After a successful raid, Stede and Ed find some unexpected enjoyment in some interesting items of clothing.
Co-Captain Duties (E) - 3.5k After the treasure hunt, Ed tries to use bath time as a way to drop a less than subtle hint that he wants to… push forward their relationship.
Maketh the Man (E) - 6.6k When Blackbeard is captured by Hornigold, Izzy Hands is forced to turn to the only person who might be mad enough to be able to save him. Naturally, Stede rises to the occasion.
Sweet/Tart (E) - 4k When Stede returns to the Revenge, he brings a little sweet treat to try and win Ed over
A Beginning (M) - 2k Sometimes, you meet a nice girl and you get along and you start to think maybe yeah, this one might be something special. And then she murders your boss’s favourite husband.

15 QUESTIONS FOR 15 FRIENDS
Tagged by @soupbtch and @gentlebeard and @ofmd-ann thank you lovelies <3
ARE YOU NAMED AFTER ANYONE?
My birth name is super old fashioned and I hated it as a kid, I think my parents were trying to be cool and ‘different’, so it’s not after anyone. I’ve always gone by my nickname.
WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU CRIED?
It was when I finished More of the Gravy Basket Than of the Grave by @veeagainsttheday. I sobbed like a baby. It’s not even that heavy on the angst but it really hit me right in the feels. It’s an incredible fic, highly recommend.
DO YOU HAVE KIDS?
Yeah I have two.
WHAT SPORTS DO YOU PLAY/HAVE YOU PLAYED?
Me and ‘sports’ are not friends, lol. I have always been a book/art nerd.
DO YOU USE SARCASM?
I have never been sarcastic in my life.
WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU NOTICE ABOUT PEOPLE?
General vibe?
WHAT’S YOUR EYE COLOUR?
Pale blue. Good for freaking people out.
SCARY MOVIES OR HAPPY ENDINGS?
I don’t think the two of these are mutually exclusive tbh - I love happy endings but I also love a bit of a scare along the way. I find a bit of blood and gore quite entertaining.
ANY TALENTS?
Pfft, I dunno. I’m one of those ‘labelled a gifted kid, now a burnt out adult’ types.
WHERE WERE YOU BORN?
Londoner for life bruv
WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES?
Drawing, painting, writing, knitting, crochet, blorbos
DO YOU HAVE ANY PETS?
No, there’s only so much shit-cleaning I can deal with in my life right now.
HOW TALL ARE YOU?
5’ 5”
FAVOURITE SUBJECT IN SCHOOL?
Art and English
DREAM JOB?
This is a bit of a sore subject for me right now. I thought I found my dream job in my 20s, and I loved it with all my heart, but post-pandemic and kids it just wasn’t the same. I’m working now in a job that’s fine but it’s not what I want to be doing. I think I need to go back to school or something. *mid thirties crisis*
No pressure tagging @merryfinches @blakbonnet @gentlebeardsbarngrill @babykittenteach @bizarrelittlemew @xoxoemynn @xray-vex @poison-into-positivity @edscuntyeyeshadow @edsrosetattoo

The daemon AU headcanons I have for the fic that I will absolutely never write are that Ed’s daemon is a hermit crab and Izzy’s is an albatross. I think I saw Ed having a hermit crab in a fic before but it fits for me. It’s small and vulnerable but deeply defensive. They’re neat little creatures (and you could certainly go in a fun vanity angle with a fancy shell) but they’re not exactly seen as scary or badass. Ed would definitely keep it hidden constantly to the point where even many of his own crew think he doesn’t have a daemon, which makes him more terrifying.
Izzy on the other hand has an albatross because they’re huge fucking sea birds who mate for life. They’ve also got a sick drag-like look and they’re capable of flying for huge distances for super long lengths of time. Obviously Rime of the Ancient Mariner was written way after OFMD is set, but there’s also that association between an albatross as a sailor’s friend and something that it is shameful to hurt/betray. In my head, Izzy’s daemon is sometimes mistaken for Ed’s and people can’t figure out how there’s only one daemon between the two of them.
Idk if those thoughts do anything for you but you’re welcome to them in case they have any inspiration value.
Well now I'm definitely feeling like I'm on the right track, lol.
I've been looking at various Caribbean hermit crabs as options for Edward. I definitely like the "retreating into your shell" symbolism, and some of them come in really fun colors. At the same time, I'm also wondering if I want something a bit more dangerous... decisions, decisions, yeah?
An albatross was actually where I started with Izzy, lol, for pretty much all those reasons. Thinking on it, though, it might be a little too perfect a match for a sailor... at least in regards to how I typically look at selecting daemons. I love coming up with the matches that are a little to the left of what people would expect, in a way that says as much with what they don't settle into as what they do. Izzy's whole thing is that he has to work for everything - he's not quite enough for it all to come easily. He can't naturally command respect or leadership positions or intimidation.
So basically an albatross daemon might give him a little too much pirate cred 🤣🤣🤣 though he would love having one for that reason.
The snakebird I found is promising, but I also really want to look around a bit more, since I stumbled on that one really quickly. And I still want to ponder the crew too.

U - Three favorite characters from three different fandoms, and why they’re your favorites.
Ed Teach from Our Flag Means Death. He's my babygirl and I love him for the war crimes, not in spite of them. He understands the power of reputation and how to manipulate it to survive. But beyond all that, he wants to be soft and have nice things, and be treated gently.
The thing that always fucks me up about OFMD is thinking about what it must be like to be his and Stede's age and not known (until now) what it feels like when you discover a common interest, much less a connection with another person. It's not an exclusively queer thing, but it has particular resonance for queer people, especially of a certain age. And as somebody who ended up figuring some shit out later than most people do, there is a lot I relate to.
--
Aziraphale is absolutely one of those characters I project a lot of my issues on, especially in S1 of Good Omens. I can't think of a character who faces so many of the same dilemmas I have had: a deep dissatisfaction with the status quo, but also absolute terror at changing anything about it because it's what he knows and is used to.
And when external circumstances push his and Crowley's hands, he steps up in a way that I'm sure is scary as fuck. He defies everything he's ever known and been told is good (even if in his heart of hearts he knows Crowley's right). Like, Crowley helps him be brave, but Crowley can't bring out what isn't there already.
--
I have loved and been in awe of Leia Organa since I was six years old. She is made of the same stuff as my mom and my aunts and my grandma.
I did not realize how important it would be to see her in The Force Awakens. I know people were upset that she and Han didn't get the happy ending we thought they deserved, but honestly it feels more realistic this way. Many couples split up after a traumatic event that involves a child.
And maybe it makes her a little more human, knowing that, despite her best efforts, she failed at things too.

To the person who sent me an ask worrying about this article from Consequence TV maybe being the start of OFMD being cancelled, I accidentally deleted it so I'm responding here!
Tl;dr: absent any other information, I'm not worried about it. When I first saw it, it was paired with a headline that said somehting along the the lines of "Taika Waititi hints he won't be returning for OFMD season 3," which seems to have changed and just isn't actually said anywhere in the article itself.
The first part of the article is immediately a bit scary:
When Consequence asks writer/director/actor Taika Waititi if he’s feeling optimistic about a third season of Our Flag Means Death, his initial response is this: “Have you seen the end?”
While this looks scary, I encourage you to stop, breathe for a moment, read that again: crucially, that's not really an answer to the fucking question, and it's presented without context or even any indication that was TW's full answer. It's such a vague opener and without any follow-up it's practically meaningless.
The next parts of the article that a lot of people are concerned about are these paragraphs:
Max has yet to announce plans for a third season but Our Flag Means Death has become a fan favorite for its loving portrayal of its core relationship between Ed and Stede. For Waititi, though, the Season 2 finale “feels like a natural end to their story. Just because I feel like, you know, they’ve been through so much and then wind up in that nice place at a happy ending.” Waititi calls Our Flag Means Death “a really special show,” adding that “I love the show so much and maybe it can survive without Rhys and I. Maybe, I don’t know. I do I think the character of Blackbeard is something I’m really proud of.” Waititi says, though, that “I don’t want it to feel like Rambo III suddenly, you know, when you’re like, ‘Oh man, they have to leave their idyllic life again.'”
When I first read that headline, I was obviously like what the fuck, but when I clicked the link I immediately dismissed this whole article. I'm a person naturally given to anxiety and over-thinking - I'm not saying that to dismiss anyone who is worried about that, I'm saying that to emphasize just how contextless and clickbait-y this article is.
It's important to remember two things: OFMD is a mainstream property that is still generating a lot of traffic due to speculation on whether it's going to be renewed, and Taika Waititi, as a person, attracts a lot of divisive media attention that is often very clickbait-y in nature. He's also the biggest name attached to OFMD.
If we look at this article, all of TW's lines are presented to us out of context. We are not given the questions he was asked or told anything about when this interview took place (other than after the finale, obviously).
A breakdown of what TW says with possible, more likely context:
"The s2 finale felt like a natural, happy ending for Stede and Ed." This is true, and we also know this was intentional in case the show doesn't get renewed. This is not new information.
"Maybe the show can survive without Rhys and I." This is what people are (understandably) worried about, but this is both not a firm statement of "I don't want to come back for s3" and completely devoid of context. A possible explanation is that DJenks has mentioned possible spin-offs; TW could be here referring to spin-offs that don't involve him or Rhys Darby. As an executive producer, there is literally no way TW doesn't know at lesat the broad outline of DJenks' plan for s3.
"I don't want it to feel like they're leaving their idyllic life again." TW doesn't want Ed and Stede's story to be beaten to death, he wants it to have a satisfying, happy ending. Again, this should not be surprising information, it's just presented in a way that makes it seem like he definitely thinks s2 should be the end of Ed and Stede when that is not what he says.
This article is completely devoid of context, and because of that I consider all TW's statements in here to be essentially meaningless because we don't know any of the questions he was asked. I believe the most logical context for these quotations were him talking about the finale and how it was satisfying in case they didn't get s3, speculating about possible spin-offs, and then talking about how he doesn't want the story to be one of those TV shows that go on too long.
A bit of additional context: Consequence is, primarily, a music review and news site. They have a TV segment, where this article is housed, but music is their main focus and they are not a website where you expect to find actual breaking TV news, let alone from big names like TW. Larger film and TV publications we've seen covering the recent release of Next Goal Wins, in comparison, universely refer to the OFMD s2 as "successful" and refer to a "likely" third season - for publications actually focused on TV, the predominant view seems to be that OFMD is successful and a 3rd season seems very likely.
This article is very clickbait-y and tells us absolutely nothing. It absolutely does not say that TW is uninterested in returning for s3 (in fact, it says the opposite, he repeats again how much he loves the show) or that OFMD will be cancelled.
We're okay. Even if we do get news that OFMD hasn't been greenlit for s3, I promise it's not going to break on Consequence TV of all places.

Tumblr / Twitter / IG
Alright lovelies, we're gonna have a little chat for a moment here. Please take a moment to read this part. I know a lot of you are feeling ansy and uncomfortable right now. It feels like something that we were hanging on to for a long time for support has suddenly fallen out from under us. That's a valid feeling. Feel it. It's good to feel it. We got this far with #RenewAsACrew, and it's scary to think that support isn't there anymore. I want to point out though, the most important part of that sentence, and that is "WE". #RenewAsACrew was a leadership team that steered us in a direction so that WE could hone our creativity, tenacity, love, support, and unhinged-ness towards our common goal, and you know what? We FUCKING DID IT. WE DID. ALL OF US. This campaign is not just #RenewAsACrew it really is ALL OF YOU. Every single one of you has stepped up and done something to support this campaign, stepped out of your comfort zones, supported each other, and you have accomplished SO MUCH in so little time. We can appreciate #RenewAsACrew, and all they did to help steer us, but we can and we WILL keep going. I know a lot of you have already heard and have even joined the #SaveOFMDCrew that is now stepping up as our navigator. I joined their discord last night, and I have to say, their organisation, passion, communication, problem-solving, is all top notch. They listen to us, the crew, they help provide support, and I have every confidence that they're going to keep us headed in the right direction. So please remember, this is not an end. Take some time tonight, vent your frustrations and fears, and feel them, and then come back tomorrow knowing we're all still here. I'll say it again-- we are not losing ground, we are not losing speed, or momentum, we are pivoting. We are changing course so that we can keep doing what we do best, and that is kicking ass, supporting one another, and fighting for our show and for queer and diverse representation in media. We will get our joy back in some form or another, even if that form is just this amazing found family we've all stumbled into. We got this. Now. Onto the fun stuff.
==Cast & Crew Sightings==
So I just have to say.. it could be the whole end of the social media strike thing, or just new week new stuff, but the cast and crew SURE does seem to be a lot more active today. Take that as you will, but I'm using it to fuel the "good stuffs happening" vibe many of us have been feeling. They really are watching what we're doing if Lindsey's comments are any indication

Uk Folks, OFMD is showing up in Radio Times and TV Times!
Thanks @lamentus1 for the deets!: "While the Radio Times might seem negative it’s been pointed out a few times that just having a write up is a big deal. It’s been picked as the one new thing on that day that should have a bit more written about it. Which is a big deal. He’d have been very limited by word count to, so we should cut him some slack for consolidating what he had to say. "

Thank you to @fruityedge05 for their post on this video by MsMojo! "MsMojo posted a video about OFMD, and started the video by saying "Today we're looking at the most chuckle-worthy scenes in this outlandish pirate comedy that was cruelly canceled before it's time." Please check out their post and the video below!

== Side Notes ==
I'm in the process of compiling as many resources as possible into a documentation repository I use. It'll take a couple days to catch up with them so I'll be a bit scarce while that's happening because it's a lot of information! Also, FYI: I am taking Saturday the 4th off -- it'll be my first day off in 5 years and I'm going to the hotsprings nearby with some friends, and that night we're going to drink and watch OFMD and GO! So there won't be a recap for Saturday from me at least (pending if I get sick again), you're all welcome obviously to put one up if you'd like!
== Love Notes ==
It's been a very long day lovelies. You did an amazing job. Just know whatever you did today, we are proud of you, and you could never disappoint us here on the crew. You're exceptional, and we see the ever wonderful you! Bonus: A little love note I found on IG I thought you might like:

The major win for me after this season is that fans are going to start writing horror/supernatural fiction for this fandom!
A genera or tone many of y'all probably haven't touched-but I assure you, it's SO much fun to write with the characters Canon has given us. May I tempt you with a few starting concepts I use to set the mood for pirate-specific horror? [Some spoilers for S2 OFMD]
Tumblr media
Doldrums! A period where a ship gets no wind- can anywhere from a few minutes or potentially months at a time. unpredictable and impossible to plan for, as if you kept stock for doldrums, you're adding a TON of salted beef and green water to your stores. More supplies means less room for loot. During this time-on top of slowly losing food and water rations. Your crew could start to hallucinate, go sun blind, or grow bored of menial work. That and if your near the equator(where most took place)- the sun cooks the wood of your top deck.
It gets REALLY dark it night. Like. I don't think OFMD has shown a scene that really depicts how dark it is. The point of the night lookout is to have maybe one candle lit at night by the helm, steer the ship, and keep an eye out for any dots of light on the horizon.
I highly recommend watching videos of pirate battles. Assassins Creed 4, recreations, people reading off accounts of battle. Anything. That shit is scary as hell. A lot of praying the wind is on your side, or that a gust of wind wouldn't knock the ship out of line of fire. Many pirates were caught because they were at the wrong place at the wrong time.
Now- The psychological shit- Most first mates were chosen by their captain. While the Captain themselves were elected by the crew. If a Captain was mutinied, the first mate would be as well for fear of the first mate was more loyal to the old captain than the crew. This is why Ed's speech to Frenchie S2ep2 makes sense. Ed knows the crew was iffy with Izzy, but didn't want to risk Izzy staying alive to possibly start a mutiny against him. So Frenchie had to kill Izzy.
Most Pirates lasted *at most* 2 years at this point in history. Blackbeard lasted 15 months. Bonnet lasted AS A PIRATE from Spring 1717 to November 10th 1718. Being hung in December of 1718. Read up on how common it was to just...go overboard. Or get so drunk your crew couldn't fight back against the English. This is how Calico Jack, Anne Bonne, and Mary(Mark) Reed went down. People not ready to fight caught with their pants down. Play up how every feels like they're walking into their own noose.
Many diseases spread like wildfire among the lower crew. So crews took 'quarantining' measures very seriously for things like dysentery and malaria. Often throwing bodies overboard.
S2 ep5 (top 3 eps of the show for me) WAS SO RIGHT ABOUT WHY SUPERSTITIONS WERE IMPORTANT TO MANAGE. Again what I said about how easy it was for the crew to turn on a captain they didn't like. But any form of doubt tword your captain could be enough to start the brewing's of a mutiny.
At the time. Going overboard was a death sentence. Many sailors didn't learn to swim as trying swimming usually meant that 1.) Your ship went down in battle and your about to be captured by the authorities or 2.) You went overboard in a storm/your ship sunk. So either way your fucked. Many thought just drowning was a more peaceful death than trying to fight for your life, drowning once exhausted.
The only thing between you and the endless abyss at any point in time is a few layers of creaking, slowly rotting, wood
Ships would creak. They're made of wood and you know how houses shift? SO DO SHIPS. During rough waves or even just at random points in the day.
The sails had to manually be raised in/before storms by climbing up the mast, going out, stepping on a VERY thin peice of rope tied off at the ends of each yard(I always call them 'yard lines', but don't quote me) they'd then reach over and pull the sail up to then fasten down. This took a dozen men on a large ship. (You can see this person standing a thicker version of it in the photo below)
Tumblr media
Masts are VERY heavy. A mast cracking and crashing onto deck could cause enough damage to sink a ship.
The Black Dot- a superstition that if you see a black dot left on your door/ or on your person (ie someone slipping it in your pocket) means you will die soon. Usually given to someone higher rank before a mutiny. We have no proof this was a real thing but a LOT of pirate media uses it.
Add more if you think of them!! [I might do a tropes based on the more supernatural elements of horror later, but for most tropes (mermaids, ghost ships, poltergeists, selkies) I think the fandom has it covered]

CW: discussion of suicidal ideation
OK but can we talk about how ofmd portrayed SI and mental health in season two??
I feel like it's so important to show how suicidal people can appear happy/energetic/ okay on the outside and still be going through absolute hell on the inside. In the first three episodes of season two, Ed was shown to be reckless, impulsive, erratic. He joked around ( like when izzy said the crew felt that the atmosphere was poisonous ), mocking people. He only expressed his sadness/depression when he was alone (when he was crying on the floor). And while a lot of this was shown to show how "crazy" Ed is, and to be humorous about it, it's also foreshadowing his ultimate plan. The signs were all there--he was just masking them.
And the crews reaction to all of this is very important. They make it very clear that things are not okay, and that Ed is the reason why. And even though Ed's attempt is more passive than what is usually portrayed, it is still an attempt. I saw this post talking about how it's so important that in Ed's purgatory, he had to be pushed off the cliff, instead of jumping himself. I think this is the same for him sailing the crew into the storm--he was pushing himself further and further towards the edge, waiting for the sea, or someone, to take him.
Passive SI is still needs to be taken seriously, and is not "less" suicidal than active SI, but I just think this was such a good choice for adding depth to Ed's character. His internal conflict between wanting to live and wanting to die. Not because he actually wants to, but because he thinks he deserves it. And because he thinks it's easier than living.
But it's not. It's hard, and ugly, and painful, and scary, and when Ed is in the water, he struggles to get the ropes off. He struggles to swim to the surface. And when he hears Stedes voice, he knows that he has to live. He has to get back to Stede, even if he hates his guts, because if someone is waiting for him, if someone wants him, needs him, loves him, than maybe Ed can too.
Maybe life won't get any easier, maybe he won't instantly forgive Stede, or himself, but maybe he can someday.
