Sonic Forces Positives Appreciation - Top 5
Tumblr media
Okay, so, it's been 4 years since the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC saw the release of what is, as of this writing, the latest mainline entry in the Sonic the Hedgehog video game series. A little mess of a game that couldn't named Sonic Forces.
We've all heard the complaints to death by now, i'm pretty sure. It's too short and light on content, the controls and level design are sloppy compared to the previous Boost-centric games, Unleashed, Colours and Generations, the story takes little advantage of the "Eggman rules the world" premise, which should've been treated like the huge deal it is, Infinite is an underwhelming new antagonist, Classic Sonic is just there to be sale bait, nothing more, and the extended cast of Sonic characters, while they do provide some radio chatter, don't really contribute much to the plot or the experience. Not to mention the horrendously deceptive advertising we got in it's pre-release period, and Eggman's boring portrayal.
In lieu of more detailed complaining and critiquing about this disappointing title, I can make a big post where we sit back, chill out and take some time to appreciate the Lights of Hope that also came with the package; the good among the bad that I believe is worth mentioning and remembering for years to come. Feel free to disagree, but hopefully you can enjoy this on some level anyway.
Here be Stache Hand the Clutcher, presenting 5 shining spots about Sonic Forces for Post #600!
1.
Tumblr media
IDW Publishing's Sonic the Hedgehog comic book series!
This is what this post was originally going to be dedicated to, before I decided that it'd fit easily into a single entry here. I know, some of you may laugh at this because you think this comic utterly butchered the Sonic universe and has highly cringe-worthy dialogue. The way I see it, though, there's enough good with the bad that IDW Sonic does it for me personally. To get the blemishes out of the way quickly: Sonic's compassion to exaggerated to unreasonable lenience, Eggman's lunacy is misconstrued as idiocy, the Metal Virus arc has a painfully weak final act thanks to a hijacking scenario, the original villains, barring Doctor Starline and (currently) his Imposter creations, aren't very interesting, if i'm being honest, supporting characters act in ways that don't make sense sometimes, and they did Blaze's world dirty.
For all of those questionable qualities, there's plenty of bits in this comic line that i'm afraid are being overlooked nowadays. Early on, the entire Mr. Tinker thing was a pretty surprising development in more ways in one. Not only was it a preview of a world where the never-ending fight between Sonic and Eggman was finally over, but also one where the doctor lived a new life using his talents to benefit anthrokind. And it was legitimate, which made the status quo enforcement hit harder than it normally would in this franchise. While it was, of course, super rash of Sonic to let Metal Sonic go free, which only gave him the opportunity to complete his search for the doctor, just this once it felt like a natural end result, because as far as the situation seemed, a giant step to a new age of peace was within reach.
As far as character portrayals are concerned, most act as you'd expect. Tails, Amy, the Chaotix, Gemerl, Omega, Blaze, Silver and the Babylon Rogues are spot-on. Rouge's fondness of jewelery has gotten kind of bad, but otherwise she's fine, and Knuckles is okay aside from his apathy about consulting with his Resistance partners. And then we have the original heroes. Tangle the Lemur has such a sunny presence, taking in everything as a fun video game with an inevitable positive conclusion, you can't dislike her no matter how much trouble she winds up in. Belle the Tinkerer's not too bad, either. The idea of a Badnik with a warm, near-lifelike appearance to use to their advantage is adorable, and it's compelling to read about this lost child wanting to make friends and escape her association with a tyrannical supergenius.
And then, there's her. Whisper the Wolf. I love this gal so much. Not only is her design beautiful and her gimmick a clever expansion on the Wispon concept from Sonic Forces, but she's also a literal lone wolf with a pleasant personality and a very interesting backstory, with heavy drama to boot. While her archenemy is rather plain (and his appearance has "of course i'm a traitorus butthole" written all over it), he left a significant effect on the girl, and that truama, in my opinion, has been handled tactfully. She has ways of handling it going forward, but it's going to influence her decisions for a long, long time. She's been consistently smart and lovable through all of the directions the comic has taken. Yes, even with all the turmoil.
What else is there to mention? Continuity nods that show how the heroes have adapted to reocurring encounters with previously defeated enemies? The engaging teamwork action? The way the comic becomes more well-paced once Evan Stanley comes in and we get more small arcs? The way they recycle old ideas from the past games and make new challenges out of them? The small bits of symbolism here and there? Doctor Starline suddenly becoming a hilarious (though perhaps unintentional) representation of the rise of Sonic fandom material one-upping Sega's output?
Well, I don't want this entry to go on for too long. In short, Sonic Forces was a launch pad for a comic book with much to digest and enjoy (or pick apart relentlessly: because clown nose).

Tumblr media
Character customization!
Sonic Forces was the game that introduced the neat idea of adding a custom look to the player character. Well, in this case, the actual character avatar with a name of the player's choosing. It was such a neat idea that it carried over to Sonic the Hedgehog himself in the Sonic Colours remaster. You can choose from just about anything. Your headgear, your shirt, your gloves, your colours, your species, your voice, the works.
Even better, there was a selection of costumes based on other characters, as limited as they were. This is definitely the most notable inclusion in the entire game, because it feels like a natural addition that should be included in every future installment, original or remake. It may just be the biggest source of replay value.
Personally, I like a female magenta dog with purple gloves and boots and a blue bodysuit.
3.
Tumblr media
Noice music!
Some folks may say this is one of the weaker OSTS in the Sonic series, but you never know when you may find a diamond in the rough. I don't think Forces' musical selection is devoid of gems worth listening to. I mean, Sunset Heights, Mortar Canyon, Metropolitan Highway, Egg Gate, the remixes of Zavok's battle theme and U.S. Stardust Speedway - Bad Future, the game's main theme, the tune accompanying the final boss' final form, the remixes in Episode Shadow, and the vocal songs, Fist Bump, Light of Hope and Infinite's theme are a flavourful set of ear candy that help this OST stand out amongst the rest spectacularly.
The Avatar stage themes also accomplish their job to telling the story of the Avatar's rise to glory. The Classic Sonic stage themes, while they could've benefitted from not going far into Genesis soundchip replication, the melodies are well constructed and fit with the desolate setting of the game.
If only the soundtrack didn't leave sour first impressions back in 2017, but what can you do?
4.
Tumblr media
Metropolis reinterpreted!
Ah, Metropolis. The capital city of the Eggman Empire, if Eggmanland isn't standing proudly at the moment. Besides the character customization, this may be my favourite thing they added to the Sonic world through Forces. Even with the rest of the game having a brown and grey, apocalyptic aesthetic, they made this place a futuristic, chrome, bustling robot paradise armed to the teeth with weaponry and traps. This is just the kind of urban settlement I would expect Eggman to build and station his factories in. The guy's got an eye for design.
Looking at images of Forces' Metropolis, I just want Sonic and company to break the boundaries of the game design and explore this bright, busy, metal hellscape. It looks far more interesting than the dark, gloomy cities we've seen in past media, like SatAM and the OVA. Best of all, no sign of Asterons, Shellcrackers or Slicers.
Here's hoping we get another Eggman dystopia like this in a future game.
5.
Tumblr media
Character justice!
Yeah yeah, we have Eggman being shockingly boring in a game about his global takeover, Infinite being so much less than what he could've been, and Tails cowering and crying out for Sonic, but for all of those, the character writing for the cast is quite spot-on, even with the odd localization decisions here and there by Ken Pontac and Warren Graff. Eitaro Toyoda and this Makoto Goya person, for the most part, have a grasp on who Sonic and company are supposed to be. The former has proven his understanding strong enough to write cover stories for the Japanese Sonic Channel website. Sonic, Amy, Knuckles, the Chaotix, Rouge, Silver and Shadow stay in-character and don't get caught up in pointless comedian routines.
I'll even admit, at least, that as subdued as Eggman's personality is in this game, he does show an intimidating amount of savviness and awareness that helps him pose a legitimate challenge to Sonic, so his ultimate defeat and humiliation feels all the more earned. You get the sense the years of rivalry have been paying off in spades.
Toyoda-san, I think you have the potential to do some more great character work in franchise entries yet to come, restoring the cast to it's former glory.
And that'll be all for this big post. I hope you've had a fun ride reminiscing of the good things that came out of this otherwise 'meh' game. If there are others I should also list, tell me what I missed, folks. Here be Stache Hand the Clutcher, i'm out and about!

Sylvia Tilly - Experiments
Tumblr media
♫ - The Night We Met - Lord Huron, Phoebe Bridgers
This is for the Anon that gave me free reign on a choice or character, and simply gave me a prompt; an Anon whom I must thank for doing so, because this was written entirely for self service, and there is not enough Tilly out there in the world! Thank you again, precious human! Enjoy! Hugs! ♡
Sick bay was not quite where you envisioned you would be on a fine evening like the present one. Though that was not to say it wasn't entirely your own fault you had ended up in such a place.
"Experiments go wrong all the time, this one can't be that bad, perhaps a small spark, maybe a few flames; you're disregarding the fact that this could well be a success, Commander."
Your over confidence in your abilities did not impress Saru, and he simply clicked his tongue at you and shot a disapproving look, or perhaps it was disappointment, either way it was far from good. You patted his shoulder and laughed, knowing that he didn't truly mean it. You had always gotten along with the Kelpien, and you knew despite his demeanour, his words carried no weights and he meant well. Saru simply sighed, leaving you in engineering with your issue-waiting-to-happen with some sarcastic last words.
"Well, good luck."
"What are we needing luck for?" Came a spry voice, the voice of Cadet Tilly, someone you were always glad to see. She had a charm and an infectious happiness, and you turned to grin at her with a wink.
"This bad boy." You pointed to the mess of wires and metal in front of you, and she widened her eyes.
"And that is what, exactly?"
"Oh, you'll see."
Those were the last words you remembered saying before you awoke in the medical bay, Dr Culber standing over you with a PADD in hand. He raised one eyebrow at you as you adjusted your eyes to the bright lights in the room, and you heard him chuckle to himself.
"It's always you, isn't it, Y/N?" Not uncaring, rather amused was his voice, and you sat up and stuck your tongue out at him.
"Oh shut up, Hugh. If it weren't for me you wouldn't have a job in here, I'm doing you a favour by consistently giving you something to do."
He laughed, hitting your leg lightly with the PADD.
"That you are."
You turned your head to see who was occupying the space next to you, and you gasped aloud when you saw Tilly there, awake but lay down, slight scratches and bruises adorning her arms and face. Instantly you were up, alert and feeling very guilty.
"Tilly," your voice was concerned but quiet, wanting not to disturb her or startle her. "I'm so sorry, are you in here because of that stupid experiment?"
"Yeah, but it was worth it, you should've seen Paul's face!" Her voice echoed, sounding almost humoured by the experience. You joined in.
"And you should have heard him rant afterwards, you wouldn't be laughing then, kids." Dr Culber's voice quipped in, and you shot Tilly a glance to find she was doing the same to you. The three of you shared a laugh, before Hugh left to continue with his work, leaving you alone in the room with Tilly.
"I really am sorry, you shouldn't be here just because of my stupidity."
"No, stop," she started, reaching out over the side table in request of your hand, which you gave her with no hesitation. "Anyway, it gives me a better chance to get to know you, right?"
You smiled at her, overwhelming optimism of Sylvia Tilly seemed to overcome any bad situation you were presented with.
The two of you sat upright now, facing one another in your respective beds, and began firing questions at the other. By the end of the hour, you managed to ascertain her favourite colour, her first pet, her favourite food and were told several anecdotes about her time at both the academy and her childhood growing up. She had learned all about you, your experiences growing up, and your favourite films to watch from the 'olden' days.
"Well, you're very free to go now, kids, please no more making bombs, Y/N, if I could be so kind as to ask that of you." He smiled, you and Tilly shooting him one back.
"I can't promise, but I can try."
Readying to leave sick bay, you were stopped by a hand on your arm and a shy red headed woman stood before you. She wasn't looking at you, rather down at the floor, almost nervously.
"Uh, I was wondering, you know, if maybe uh, you would want to get to know each other a little more, I would hate for this to be it, and uh, I- I really enjoyed our conversation and- and I'm rambling now so I'll shut up-"
You cut her words off with a finger against her lips and a wide smile.
"Tilly, your brain must work at a thousand miles an hour, it's a marvel. Yes, I absolutely would love that. I enjoyed it too, and I would love to get to know you further, if you'll allow such a thing." The sincerity in your voice threw her off, and she stuttered out her next words.
"Oh, I- I yeah, absolutely, I'd never say to to that, maybe later then? For dinner? Or if that's not alright we could do it another time, I really don't-"
Again she was cut off, this time with your hand under her chin and a small kiss against her forehead.
"Absolutely. I'll see you later on."
Leaving Tilly stood grinning like an idiot, you left, not letting on that you were doing the same. Nobody could have predicted that an experiment gone wrong could have brought two people together quite like that. It most certainly was not a normal occurrence, but then who ever wanted normality?

Hello ^^ Is it cool if I request Todoroki's s/o being jealous of Momo? Like she finds them in a compromising/suggestive/completely accidental situation and she just like... leaves? She's d o n e. Because she's constantly hearing how those two should've ended up together? Angst that ends up with fluff! Thank you very very much!:3
Dear God, someone stop me because my immense love for Todoroki makes my writing go out of control XD. Another Todoroki imagine that ended up much longer than it should have.
Slight spoilers for the End-of-Term Test Arc of the manga.
TODOROKI:
You loved Todoroki, you really did. But you couldn’t help but feel insecure sometimes. He was strong, smart, and attractive, which made him very popular, especially among the female population. You adored him, but you weren’t sure if you were actually worthy of being called his girlfriend. You weren’t terrible, but you didn’t think you were particularly pretty or smart. Not like… like her.
Yaoyorozu was a dear friend of yours, and you cared about her deeply. She was serious but unimaginably kind and was always willing to help you. She was part of the reason you and Todoroki had gotten together in the first place! The second you told her of your feelings for him, she had immediately done everything in her power to help you two, and you were so incredibly grateful to her for that, but… you just couldn’t stop the terrible feelings that arose within you when you saw her with Todoroki.
They just seemed destined to be together! They sat next to each other in class, and they were always paired together for training exercises. You also knew that Todoroki had been the one to vote for her when the class was deciding who would be class rep. They held each other in such high esteem that you weren’t sure how you could possibly compare.
When you went out with some of your classmates, you could always feel the stares, hear the whispers. Strangers would see Todoroki and Yaoyorozu walking side-by-side and talk about what a beautiful couple they made. And when you looked at them, you could see it too. Their gorgeous features, long legs, and confident posture made quite the picture and never failed to make you feel unsuitable.
The words of your classmates didn’t help either. They never said anything to you directly, but you knew what they said when they thought you weren’t listening.
“Yaoyorozu and Todoroki look good together, don’t they?”
“Don’t say that! You know Todoroki-kun is dating (Y/N)-chan!”
“I didn’t mean anything bad by it! It’s just that sometimes it looks like Yaoyorozu and Todoroki are the ones dating instead of Todoroki and (L/N).”
You know they didn’t mean any harm, but it still hurt.
You discreetly glanced over while talking with Mina. Even now, the two were standing in the back of the class, chatting with each other. You bit your lip in an attempt to quell the jealousy that was threatening to overwhelm you.
In the midst of their conversation, Yaoyorozu was using her hands to emphasize her words and took a slight step back. She didn’t notice the desk was so close behind her, and her ankle rammed into its leg, causing her to fall back. With his quick reflexes, Todoroki reached out to stop her and her hands instinctively gripped onto his shirt, but it was far too late, and the two went crashing down.
The entire class turned at the sudden noise and eyes widened at the sight. Todoroki had fallen on top of Yaoyorozu, his hand cradling the back of her head to protect her from injury. Their chests were pressed against each other, their long legs tangled together, and their faces were mere centimeters apart.
Catcalls and laughter filled the room.
“Way to go, Yao-momo! You’ve really got Todoroki falling for you!” Kaminari cheered, laughing hysterically.
Sero joined in with a grin. “The two recommended students of Class 1-A, not bad. Quite the power couple.”
You couldn’t take it any more. You stood abruptly, making your chair clatter loudly onto the ground and causing everyone to go silent. With tears welling up in your eyes, you bolted to the door, sliding it open and running out.
“(Y/N)!” Todoroki called out as he lifted himself up. He held out a hand to help Yaoyorozu up as well, quickly asking if she was alright. She glanced worriedly at the doorway you had just left through and after she nodded, Todoroki began to chase after you, making sure to throw a withering glare at Sero and Kaminari on the way out.
The door slammed shut harshly and silence fell over the room once again. Jirou stomped up behind Sero and Kaminari to whack them both upside the heads. “Idiots!”
You were having trouble breathing, violent sobs racking your body as you ran. Finally, you reached your destination and threw the door open to step out onto the rooftop. Sometimes you liked to come up here with Todoroki to get a breath of fresh air. Other times you came up alone when you were stressed or needed to clear your head. You sat down, leaning your back against the fence that surrounded the roof. You pulled your knees up, burying your face in them as you wailed, tears endlessly streaming down your cheeks.
You weren’t good enough for him. You knew it. Hell, everyone knew it! But that certainly didn’t make it hurt any less.
The door slammed open, and you jolted your head up to find heterochromatic eyes staring back at you. You scrambled to get up and began to flee once more, but a warm hand caught your wrist and you were spun around, running into Todoroki’s chest. You used your free hand to try to push him away, but he grabbed that one as well, his grip tightening as you struggled against him.
“(Y/N)! (Y/N), stop! Tell me what’s wrong!”
“Let me go!”
“No, not until you tell me. We’re dating, aren’t we? If something is making you upset, we need to talk about it. That’s how a relationship works!”
“Well, maybe you should be dating Momo-chan then!”
Surprise and a bit of hurt flashed through his eyes. “What? Why would you even say something like that?”
Guilt filled you when you saw that you had caused him pain. “Because…! Because everyone thinks you should be dating her instead!” you yelled, breaking down.
“What are you talking about?”
“Our classmates, random people on the street, they all think that Momo-chan suits you better! That you two would be just perfect for each other! You’re both strong and beautiful, and I’m just…” Another sob left your lips. “…not… I’m not good enough for you. I’m no-mph!”
Todoroki pulled you close, hands gripping tightly onto your wrists and pressed his lips against yours. You were surprised. He was not one for PDA and kisses were fairly rare, always done strictly in private, and even then, not very often. Your struggling died down, but your tears didn’t stop. When he deemed that you wouldn’t run away, he released your wrists and laid one hand on your back and the other behind your head to deepen the kiss, pressing against you as close as he possibly could. Finally, when you two were growing desperate for air, he pulled back from the kiss, doing so slowly as if he was cherishing every moment that he was touching you. He still remained close to you and kept his arms around you, staring seriously into your eyes. “It’s not Yaoyorozu. It’s never been Yaoyorozu. It’s always you.”
“Shouto…”
He shook his head. “No, you need to let me talk.” You swallowed the words you had been about to say and nodded. He took a deep breath before continuing. “It’s always been you,” he repeated softly. “No one else. I didn’t choose to go out with you on some whim; I chose you because I thought that you were someone that I wanted to have by my side. Who cares what our classmates think, who cares what anyone else thinks?! This is between us. I know I’m not good at being upfront about my emotions or knowing how others are feeling, and I’m sorry for that. I’m sorry for not realizing what you were going through. But you need to tell me these things. Don’t just bottle it inside and hide it away because I know firsthand that it doesn’t make anything better.” You bit your lip, aware of just how painful his childhood was and how he never had anyone he could open up to. He moved his hand to cup your cheek, thumb swiping at the trail that your tears had left. “(Y/N)… I love you.”
Those words hit you hard. It wasn’t the first time you two had said it to each other. You’ve said it before in sweet tones or with playful laughter, but the seriousness of how he said it just now shook you and you began to cry again. You threw your arms around his neck. “I love you too! I do! I-I’m sorry, I’m so sorry!” And you leaned up to kiss him once more, heart becoming lighter and lighter by the second.
A class period passed and the door to Class 1-A slid open, and everyone held their breath. They then let out a sigh of immense relief when the two of you stepped in together, hands entwined. Yaoyorozu ran up to you, expression showing concern and guilt.
“(Y/N)-san! I’m truly sorry! I really wasn’t trying t-” You lifted a hand to stop her, smiling at her.
“No, I’m sorry. I overreacted. You have nothing to apologize for, Momo-chan.” She put a hand over her heart in relief and took a step forward to wrap her arms around you in a hug which you returned happily. When the two of you separated, Jirou and Mina shoved Sero and Kaminari to the front.
“I-uh…” Kaminari scratched the back of his head, glancing guiltily at your red eyes. “Look, (L/N), we’re sorry. We really didn’t mean it. We were just messing around.”
You shook your head. “I told you, it’s fine. You don’t have to be sorry.”
“We still feel bad though. But really, you shouldn’t be upset. We joke around a lot about Todoroki and Yaoyorozu since they’re the two recommended students and always end up partners in exercises. But we all know that you’re the one for him.” Sero grinned, jabbing a thumb in Todoroki’s direction. “No one else can make Todoroki smile like that in public after all.”
You turned to your boyfriend, finding a soft smile curving his lips before he quickly returned to his neutral expression at Sero’s words. He sighed, taking your hand again and bringing you over to your desk. He sneaked a kiss on the back of your hand in a way no one could see it, giving you another small smile before returning to his own seat.
You blushed at his actions then turned to face forward when the teacher entered to begin class. You opened your textbook, gripping the sides tightly as you tried to keep from grinning. Todoroki really was the sweetest boyfriend ever.

speaking very bluntly and candidly from experience, if the note is genuine and he made an attempt after posting it, then i hope it was unsuccessful and he is getting help and is able to recover.
however, i don't think that a. hbomberguy should be blamed for driving him to do anything when he was calling him out for very shitty things he'd happily gotten away with for years. and hbomberguy didn't even highlight ALL of his offenses, either. & also b. i feel like mentioning nick outright in the note shouldn't be like... dismissed. as a person who's had that kinda weight/pressure put on me both from REAL tragedies that occurred afterward & ppl faking shit, that kinda shit is incredibly heavy & outright traumatic to deal with. nick is obviously not innocent, but he doesn't deserve that kinda pressure/weight on his shoulders.
this entire thing, regardless, is a huge mess that never had to or should've gotten this far. and either way it's ultimately just sad nobody can even garner if this is a true attempt or not bc he has such a manipulative history. there's many lessons to take away here, i guess.
i ultimately hope he's okay and just stays off the goddamn internet, for his own sake and the sake of his victims.
