AEW Double or Nothing 2021

In which the spirit of WCW is alive in confusing and delightful ways and we are left to parse whether overbooking and extracurriculars are offset by having actually very good wrestling happening at the same time.

- Lessons learned from Revolution on the production side? Maybe just cool it on pyro, though the rappelling adventure in the Stadium Stampede showed some of that now-characteristic 'trust us it'll look better on TV' flair. Hot crowd tends to paper over most woes, and the crowd was pretty hot. My one gripe is that the casino theme is hanging around like yesterday's takeout containers. Nothing wrong with clinging to a theme, I just think it's time for season 2. My suggestion? Under the Sea.

*Pre-Card Serena Deeb (C) v Riho for the NWA Women's Championship (***1/2) - Serena Deeb's star has finally risen. She's a remarkably consistent technician and she can get a match out of anyone at this point. She's working at the level of Mercedes Martinez or Madison Eagles at this point, it's amazing that she was overlooked or considered fit only to be a coach for so long. With the NWA belt she has this new swagger, she's basically everything Tessa Blanchard might bring to the table with none of the downsides (Serena has a lot of friends and seems like a lovely person, even!) - Riho's back and here to stay. Her time in Stardom didn't do much for my evaluation of her, which is that there are many better wrestlers that would be better representatives of the joshi style and she's merely pretty good. - The match was very good. Serena showcased a champion's aggression against a sympathetic Riho, they really work well against each other, Deeb's technical prowess against Riho's flexibility led to a very dynamic finish.

*Main Card Hangman Adam Page v Brian Cage (***1/2) - Here the shenanigans start. Brian Cage is on Team Taz, Team Taz has nothing else much to do tonight, so why wouldn't Team Taz flex their muscles, bait us with HOOK, etc? (Because it would be nice to have some variety in the card in terms of a match where one competitor stands across from another competitor?) - Hangman is (checking notes) yeah, still over as fuck, as befits the Anxious Millennial Cowboy. Cage terrifies me, he's a child's drawing of a body builder. He do be very agile for a man of his immense musculature tho. They match up well, Page is biggish for a flyer, Cage loves to play catch. Nothing much to write home about, other than Hangman's beautiful moonsault to the floor and what was overall a very good curtain jerker. - Okay fine, I am curious about Cage's reluctance to lean on the goons, Starks can't come back soon enough.

The Young Bucks v Jon Moxley & Eddie Kingston (***) - I will not be referring to Mox & Eddie as (The) Wild Things because it gives me 'he calls it the wacky line' flashbacks for some reason. - The Bucks have to cheat and abuse Rick Knox's attention span constantly to be on even footing with Mox & Eddie, which is a clever sort of thing that gets washed out by the appearance of LG and Karl Anderson, which again, is cool in a vacuum but was the story of the evening. - Pace was weird - repetitive in eliminating Eddie, then Mox fights back, failed hope spot, Bucks team up, Eddie saves x2/3 in a row. - Mox, unlike Cody (in so many ways,) will probably actually be taking some time off with Renee, which is the kind of thing I would prefer not to know in terms of booking, but they really uh, put him down on the canvas here, and it felt pretty finale-esque.

Casino Battle Royale (n/r, but on the balance pro) - Any changes to the theme of the PPV would likely include changing up the nonsense suit format of these largely joyless slogs. - Obviously anticipating a NJPW talent, or... I dunno, actually -- Lio Rush was a surprise. Got in a quick demonstration of his otherworldly quickness, and you know what, there's probably a fun place for him in AEW. He'll need some friends, of course, feel like Team Taz might fit his temperament. I wonder if he was aware of the Mark Henry news... - Christian does not need to win this kind of match to get a title shot, obviously, but that said it was super lovely to use him to give Jungle Boy the shine. Jungle Boy would be a license to print money if he was even as big as Hangman. - Could register some continued griping about how Penta is not getting his due in AEW but he also literally was dressed as the Joker so I'm low on sympathy on this one particular night.

Anthony Ogogo v Cody Rhodes (*) - I did not like this. It's hard for me to read jingoism as a face move to begin with, and Cody's was egregiously tone deaf and kinda silly yet delivered without a trace of irony because Cody doesn't do irony on purpose, ridiculous neck tattoo aside. - Great argument to be made that Ogogo just isn't experienced enough to be winning matches against Cody. But like, what are we doing here? Cody needs to take some time off, maybe. I thought that's what was happening when he had his mini feud with Penta that really just ended in quick decisive Cody win. I though maybe Cody was being turned when QT and The Factory snapped-- sure, they're a group of impotent player 2s, but Cody is an out of touch elitist with a callous and manipulative streak. Alas, also no. America #1. - Cody is approximately 8 times as tough as Billy Gunn based on his weathering of the one punch man. Match ran a bit long given how little there was to go on. Cody gigged? Quelle surprise. - Cody had the best match on the card like, 3 out of the first 4 AEW events or something, and that was all booking and storytelling. I do hope Cody follows Moxley's lead into a little sabbatical.

Miro (C) v Lance Archer for the TNT Championship (**1/2) - Card's hossiest hoss match, a quick burst reminiscent of a car wreck. Absolutely hit on what it should've hit on but a little slow moving considering it went all of 10 minutes. - I will not complain about Jake the Snake, who I love. And also the gimmick spot, with Miro very astutely yeeting what was definitely a snake in a bag (surely.) back down the tunnel.

Dr Britt Baker, DMD v Hikaru Shida (C) for the AEW Women's Championship (***) - Picked up a lot of steam toward the end but seemed a little toothless (heh) until the last five. - Shida 'deserved' some more time as champion in front of crowds but also it's time to let heel Britt reach her peak, I can't even imagine how obnoxious she can be as the champ, it's going to be great.

Sting & Darby Allin v Ethan Page & Scorpio Sky (***1/2) - Such is the power of STING that I feel like I might be underrating this match... I mean it was an okay match about very simply getting some revenge and the sixty year old man did a very subdued Code Red and a slightly less subdued dive. He's also Sting. They missed an opportunity in calling it the 'Scorpio' Death Drop, but the main takeaway here is you see something like this where it's The Icon and you start to understand why WWE trots out their legends to come out of incredibly still kick ass without bending their knees. - The difference, I guess, is that Sting is absolutely being used to build up Darby Allin, whereas it's not like the fed brought back Goldberg and his attendant aura to pump up... anyone but Goldberg?

Kenny Omega (C) v PAC v Orange Cassidy for the AEW World Championship (****) - Off the top I have to say I'm very sad that the rest of the Galaxy's Greatest Friends were seen only very briefly, nice of them to bring OC's backpack. - Also have to point out that PAC's promo featured one of my favourite jokes, that Kenny must be short for Kenneth as a sort of legal/birth name belonging to a professional wrestler. (See also: Samoa Joseph) - And Mr Cassidy certainly did try in this match, ragdoll sells and all. Kenneth and PAC are absurd talents who bring aerial, power and technical maneuvers in equal measure and OC is not doing any of those on the same level, but he picked his spots, showed his genre savvy and hung in there to the point that he wasn't just the fall guy. - The extracurriculars continue in a match that was already a little overboard for silliness due to asymmetry... I think if you're the Invisible Hand it would've made sense to save up all your tricks for this match, but who am I to question the golden goose? - Sure, Kenny and Don ran the classic heel manager interference spot and taking out the ref in desperation spot but having to take out the ref because PAC wouldn't break the hold is fun, as is the stupid/inspired sense in running the 'smash opponent with the belt' spot four times so as none of your heavy gold prizes feel left out. (I love that AAA Mega Championship, they weren't on TV so we get to see it?) - "Fuck You, Don," indeed.

The Inner Circle v The Pinnacle in 'Stadium Stampede II' (***1/2) - This one had to grow on me for two reasons, first that it's usually pretty unforgivable to co-opt the main event spot from the championship match, and second to law of diminishing returns on dumb gimmick matches. - But grow it did. There's a full on meat locker? Commentary will refer to a cardboard cut-out of Shahid Khan as Tony Khan's father (that's canon now,) and Jericho will lovingly pat it? Konnan happened to be the DJ at whatever night club there is a Jaguar Stadium? Spears surrounds himself dramatically with chairs and his hoisted by his own petard? - Ultimately it comes down to letting Sammy shine. His involvement with the Inner Circle has sometimes come at the cost of being able to showcase that prior to AEW he was an ascendant talent in PWG, on his way to Ricochet level feats of acrobatic excess. Still feel like Sammy could've/should've been the one tossed off the cage a few weeks ago, but even better is being the guy getting the pin in the ring.

Fic: Autumn

4 tattoos on TK’s body, 4 stories set over each of the 4 season. Carlos and TK grow closer.

It’s been raining on and off for weeks now, the humidity thick in the air, mixing badly with the chillier temperatures in the mornings and evenings, the sky looking a lot like someone’s taken a paintbrush to it and permanently painted it a depressing colour of grey that’s never going to disappear. Carlos is either constantly overdressed or underdressed and the uncertainty of the days, the constant rain, and the stress he’s been under for a few weeks now has made him extremely tired.

Which is why he and TK’s had a fight. They don’t often do this, Carlos has the patience of a saint, he knows this, Owen’s told him that on numerous occasions when TK’s been a little difficult and Owen’s been struggling to not lose his own temper, even TK’s gratefully expressed that too on a few occasions. So yes, he is very aware of how calm and patient he can be. But today Carlos has had a bad day at work and he’s tired and it’s just his luck that today of all days clashes with one of TK’s bad days, where he is anxious and too wrapped up in his own head to really be able to read signals.

Carlos doesn’t fault TK for this, of course not, but when his boyfriend is being uncooperative and uncommunicative, and not having had the strength to not drink that fourth cup of coffee today, their moods are doomed to clash. And it turns into a fight over something really stupid that causes TK to slam the bedroom door shut and for Carlos to kind of want to cry as it rattles on its hinges, that’s how much he feels that everything is too much right now.

He’s bent over the stove, staring angrily at the uncooked chicken in the pan and wishes he could set it on fire or something, that would maybe make him feel fractionally better. Carlos really doesn’t want to fight, and he really doesn’t want to fight with TK, but even he has bad days where all signals go straight over the other one’s head and the answer ‘I’m fine’ with a foot bouncing unrelentlessly while hanging off the chair with a nose in phone, means that TK is definitely not fine, sometimes that doesn’t always translate for Carlos. Particularly not on a day like this.

He knows most of the signs and tells when TK is anxious, has been through one anxiety attack triggered by a nightmare with him where he might have remained totally collected on the outside while on the inside his heart broke in two because his boyfriend was on the floor telling him he couldn’t breathe and that image is doomed to haunt him for a long time. It was scary, but he’s seen panic before and he recognized the signs immediately and they talked through it afterwards and moved past it, well adjusted to deal with it in the future.

And TK isn’t selfish, he’s pretty good at reading Carlos’ in return, but not on the days where Carlos is strung so tightly he could snap in half due to days full of picking kids up from places where their parents are fighting with fists, bloody from the violence and almost always on something while the kids are hiding, their faces blank without tears because they’ve been through it too many times by then to know it doesn’t help. He doesn’t know what’s worse, that they’ve seen too much of this already, that it’s become so normalised for them they’ve already accepted it, or when they see it for the first time and Carlos is forced to gather them up in his arms, talk to them or sing to distract from the vicious yelling from the other room while child services are being called and the parents are dragged away in handcuffs screaming bloody murder. Yeah, sometimes he hates his job.

So, it’s been a bad day and coming home to a TK that is a nervous ball of tightly strung energy too, is not a good combination.

Carlos exhales, feels absolutely exhausted by now and he’s honestly ready to just go to sleep on the couch and forget about everything. He hears the bedroom door open, prepares himself for some short clipped words from TK informing him that he’s going home to his dad to sleep, instead, and this goes to show how upset and distracted he is, when TK steps in close and wraps his arms around him instead. He freezes for a moment, rendered shocked before he snaps out of it, covering TK’s hands with his own.

He’s about to turn around so he can hug back for real when he feels TK’s arms slip from his, hurt he turns to look at TK, but TK’s already taken his hand in his, tugs on it until Carlos follows him, and walks him over to the couch. Gently he pushes him down on it, and Carlos goes willingly, at first not understanding what TK is doing. He gets the hint that TK wants him to lie down though, and when he does TK wordlessly climbs on top of him, laying down, covering him with his body. Dumbstruck he puts his arms around TK, feels his calming breathing on top of him, and somehow he calms down himself. TK winds his own arms around him too and with the both of them on top of each other like this, it’s a snug fit on the small couch. But it doesn’t matter, having TK near calms him immediately.

“I’m sorry.” TK whispers. “I didn’t mean to be difficult.” Carlos shakes his head.

“No, it’s okay, I’m very sorry too.”

“I know work’s been a lot for you recently and I should have been more considerate, it’s just, it’s hard for me sometimes when I get stuck in my head to see that you’re struggling too.” He admits and Carlos nods, he understands.

“And I’m not leaving, I promise.” It makes Carlos stop for a moment, the words taking him by surprise because while it’s been hanging over them from the beginning that TK’s been scared that Carlos is going to leave him because he’s has got it into his head that he’s going to be too much and have too much baggage for it to be fair to Carlos to have to deal with it too, Carlos cannot help but feel the exact same at times as well. Especially when TK is upset and angry and on the rare occasions that they do fight, that he’ll leave. Not for long, but for a few hours and the thought of that is just too much for him sometimes that it makes him not think clearly, panicked into apathy almost.

“I’m in it for the long run I promise.” Carlos tightens his arms around him, breathes him in, feels the weight of TK ground him into the couch, and he focuses on that feeling of safety, allowing it to embrace him for a moment as he swallows down the tears.

“I know.” He whispers, hears his voice waver slightly. “I know, but it’s nice to hear you say it nonetheless.”

TK sits up, rests his elbow on either side of Carlos and wipes the escaping tear away gently, and kisses his cheek.

“I love you Carlos, I’m not leaving.”

“I know…”

“Are you okay?” He asks, concerned and Carlos shrugs, not totally used to being on the receiving end of TK’s worry. It makes him feel a little odd but he’s also understanding TK’s own hesitancy to opening up to Carlos in the beginning of their relationship, it’s scary.

“Work has not been easy recently. It’s just been a lot of bad stuff involving kids and social services and drugs, it’s making me feel useless. These kids, they deserve better and most of them just want their parents to love them. Separating them like this feels inhumane.” He admits, shakes his head to prevent more tears from escaping.

TK nods but he winces and he has that rare look on his face, one Carlos knows means that he wants to protect him, wishes he could carry some of the burden for Carlos himself. It’s the same look he gets when he’s on call and he has to deal with a particularly difficult rescue, where instincts kick in and he will do everything he can to save the person.

It’s strange but Carlos recognises it’s deeply meaningful to be on the receiving end of it, Carlos can’t imagine there’s many people alive that TK cares this deeply about.

“I’m very very sorry about that.”

“Yeah...me too. But taking it out on you when you’re clearly not feeling your best either is not okay and I’m sorry.”

“I know you didn’t mean to and I wasn’t exactly helping my case along by being inconsiderate.”

“Agreed then that we both made mistakes?” Carlos says, his lip twitching a little and TK nods, smile small.

“Yeah, agreed.” He leans forward and kisses Carlos’ nose, a soft gentle gesture and it lodges something fiercely in his throat for a moment, making him gulp down the tears.

But it makes him feel better too, and the tough and long day has started to diminish slightly by now when he feels warm and loved and comforted by the love of his life.

“Tell me about your day.” He tells TK and he huffs but smiles softly and nods, leans down again and while he talks he keeps placing butterfly light kisses on Carlos’ exposed skin, making his heart flutter in love.

He talks for a bit and Carlos hums and nods and doesn’t say much, starts to feel himself drifting off but feeling too tired to stop it.

…..

He wakes by the cascading sound of water against his windows, sits up confused as to where he is for a moment and why there is a blanket draped over him, the loud noise alerting him to the roaring storm outside. The living room light is off but the kitchen ones are on and there are two steaming plates of food standing on the counter, TK absent. He yawns, stretches and gets up in search of his boyfriend. It doesn’t take long, he comes out of the bathroom, freshly showered and wearing sweatpants and an old t-shirt of Carlos’, a little loose around the arms. He smiles when he spots Carlos is up and comes close, wrapping his arms around him. He looks better Carlos notes, less burdened than when earlier.

“Hi.” He smiles. Carlos can’t help but smile back, loving it when he gets to see TK like this, completely at ease, facade gone, face open and soft looking in clothes that belong to him.

He feels his heart grow in size and he leans down, kisses his boyfriend and hopes it conveys everything he feels that he can’t find the words for at the moment. TK seems to appreciate it and somehow understand it too, he hums, wraps his arms tighter around his neck and gives in to the kiss completely. He could do this forever, but he’s hungry and whatever there is that TK’s made smells lovely, so he breaks the kiss and TK kisses his nose before he steps back, but only a little, still keeping close to Carlos.

“You cooked.” He comments lifting an eyebrow. TK shrugs, a little unsure.

“Yeah, I have no idea what you had planned to make before the fight but you fell asleep and I thought you might appreciate some food when you woke up.” Carlos' heart melts, he loves him so much.

TK looks back and Carlos kisses him again, taking the breath out of him as TK’s surprise becomes evident. Carlos steps back and TK looks dazed, he blinks and Carlos smiles.

“Thank you, I love it.” And a shy little smile breaks across TK’s smile, relief mixing with love.

“Yeah?”

“Yeah. And I am starving.”

“Good.” They step apart to sit down and the evening that started out horrendously turns into something soft and beautiful instead, both of them tucked away into a little bubble of light while it rains heavily outside, unbeknownst to them.

After dinner and the dishes have been cleaned away they move to the couch again, Carlos also having changed out of his jeans to fully enjoy the downtime. An episode of Criminal Minds is playing on TV, not Carlos’ favourite thing to watch when he wants to relax, but TK enjoys it and has taken to asking Carlos questions about what they do being realistic or not.

He’s not paying attention to the episode though, his attention is on TK more than anything else right now, his head in Carlos’ lap, eyes attentive on the screen, his hair soft and loose, having been left unstyled after the shower, breathing slow and calm. He’s stroking a hand up and down his arm, making goosebumps erupt on his skin, something he delights a little too much in doing.

The sleeve of the shirt has risen up, and there is one of TK’s many different tattoos. This one is the SOS one, the world as the O and it’s pretty, Carlos actually likes it a lot, can’t help but be curious about it too. He moves his hand over it, fingers gently hovering above it until he has TK’s full attention. It takes a while for him to notice that the stroking has stopped and he moves his head, frowning slightly.

“What is it?” He asks, Carlos smiles, a little cheekily.

“What about this one.” He taps gently at the underside of his upper arm and TK’s eyes move to it. When he gets what Carlos is asking he huffs but he nimbly moves and lies down on his back, meeting Carlos’ eyes. Carlos gets a pillow from behind himself, motions for TK to move and puts it under his head making it more comfortable for him.

“Okay this one really doesn’t have as deep a meaning as the other one, just to warn you.”

“It doesn’t have to be deep.” He reassures. “I just want to know more about you.” TK’s eyes go soft for a moment and he draws in a sharp breath.

“I love you so much.” He whispers and Carlos smiles brilliantly, leans forward and kisses TK.

The angle is all wrong and kissing upside down really isn’t as sexy as they make it out to be in films, not that it matters, the action, softly kissing someone he loves is all that matters.

“I love you too.” He sits back.

“Okay, well this really isn’t that deep. But you know I love the ocean?” Carlos nods.

“Well I went on a trip with some friends to California for a weekend when I was younger and there was this activism group that was protesting and advocating for the protection of our seas so I stopped and talked with one of the guys and he was really passionate about it. I learnt a lot from him and I guess it just kick started my own passion for the sea.”

“Yeah?”

“But the tattoo came after a drunk night out, same trip though, where I flirted with the tattoo artist for long enough to make him agree to do it even though I very obviously wasn’t sober.”

“You little menace.” TK flashes him a cheeky grin, clearly proud of the achievement.

“Well the tattoo turned out nice though.” He strokes his thumb appreciatively over it and TK nods.

“It did.”

“What happened with the dude?”

“I went home with him for the night.” Carlos snorts and rolls his eyes.

“Of course you did.” TK chuckles.

“But yes the tattoo turned out nice, it really did. Not that I am against putting tattoos or piercings or stuff on your body that don’t have any meaning. But I guess it’s nice when some of them do.”

“It’s art, I like it on you, adds another layer to you, as well as making you hot as hell.”

“Yeah?” TK lifts an eyebrow, intrigued now, fishing for details, wanting more. Carlos chuckles but he can’t really resist TK when he looks at him like he does now, biting at his lip, knowing of course exactly what he’s doing to Carlos.

“You are a menace.” TK chuckles, sits up, easily turning around planting himself in Carlos’ lap, kicking away the pillow.

“Yep, but you love it.”

“I do.” He says leaning forward, meeting TK in the middle.

They don’t last too long on the couch because after becoming an actual well adjusted couple both of them prefer having sex in the bedroom, it makes for much more intimacy than a quickie on this small couch do for either of them these days. Not that they are exactly opposed to having sex a bit all over the place at Carlos’, but after the evening they’ve had, the bedroom it defintiely is.

Carlos turns off the TV, carries his boyfriend easily enough to his bedroom and closes the door behind them.

Okazaki Kei Route Review

After an (admittedly long) hiatus we’ve returned to continue this review series and hopefully finish it off! Our third character is Okazaki Kei, my second favorite character in the game. Kei’s a well meaning security specialist who was assigned to protect Yanagi’s team, but you soon learn pretty early on he’s a glorified spy meant to report their movements back to the police. While I loved him as a person, I have a few qualms with his route. Since it’ll be harder and harder to give my honest opinions on a route without putting in spoilers, this review will start to get fairly SPOILER HEAVY. So be aware if you’re looking to play this game and spoilers will diminish your enjoyment.

Characterization

Okazaki Kei is an incredibly complex individual that is more than he seems from the get go. Considering the common advice is to play Enomoto, Sasazuka, then Okazaki’s route in that order you can view it as the game ramping up the stakes. He’s a seemingly easy going guy housing dark secrets and a host of issues that would probably be tough for a therapist to work through in real life.

And I think the game does a very interesting job of portraying them! Kei balances a lot of charming moments with the more intense ones just enough to get you invested in him and wanting more. His infatuation with Ichika, and by consequence the issues of an insane martyr complex and a possessive streak crops up slowly enough and is properly explained enough that you don’t feel like it’s a case of her being a mary sue. Okazaki is insanely affectionate, and it feels natural to his character in such a way that you think he’d behave this way with anyone. Which makes genuinely becoming closer to him in the story so much more satisfying!

Okay I know I’m seriously gushing about him and his route certainly has its flaws, but I honestly suspended a lot of my disbelief for those flaws. That is to say, the whole way he solves his martyr complex kind of does rest on the power of heterosexual love. But the average otome enjoyer isn’t coming to the genre to see a plotline happen where a man gets six months of therapy.

Plot Relevance

Following up on Sasazuka dealing with a member of Adonis, Okazaki does the same thing. While a lot of his conflict is primarily focused inward, the game doesn’t deprive you of a glimpse into the greater narrative and in fact connects the two fairly easily.

On Ichika’s end, I have to say she did a fair bit of detective work here, most of it actually. Kei is firmly categorized as the brawn, a security guard, so a lot of times Ichika is bouncing ideas off him and taking initiative in the case. A breath of fresh air after dealing with her kind of being made out to be a bumbling idiot in Sasazuka’s route.

Now the greater plot, is um, a piece of work. Okazaki’s route connects his internal conflict with Adonis. We’re shown a flashback of an assassination attempt on the prime minister, and Okazaki mistakenly attempted to save someone instead of committing himself to the job. The consequences were drastic, his partner dying to keep him safe. Except he finds out soon after that same partner was a mole for Adonis, and had a big hand in the assassination attempt. Kei is so traumatized that he develops the martyr complex that I mentioned just a few paragraphs earlier! He latches onto Ichika, because he projects a standard that she’s worth dying for. The narrative makes it clear it’s not because it’s Ichika, but rather because she was in the right place at the right time.

So you expect a lot of the plot to be devoted to this right? Well, yes! But also no. Kei’s Adonis pair is a man who’s part of organized crime and was a former police officer. He grew increasingly dissatisfied with his job, being abused by his superior and constantly having his accomplishments stolen from him by said superior. As a result he grew so discontent with the police force he turned to crime. This is a very touchy and nuanced subject don’t you think? Exposing that police as an institution is rife with the ability for cops to be crooked, combined with them lording their authority over others.

Well the game handles that with all the gentleness of taking a bat to someone’s window. The greater plotline plays out like such a weird pro-cop PSA that I felt kind of disoriented over it. You obviously can’t easily forget that this game is about the police as much as it as about dating guys. But I felt like I was getting slapped in the face over and over with “You NEED cops to protect you. Cops must ALWAYS be there. Corruption is only a few bad apples. Cops are IMPORTANT.” Like, I thought I was playing an otome game. Not debating the police’s general usefulness. And its especially stupid because Kei isn’t even a sterotypical cop! He’s specifically trained in security detail, you know, GUARDING people. Not chasing down criminals! Why was I getting this force fed to me on his route of all places?!

Character Interaction

This is where no exaggeration, the route was saved for me. Kei was accompanied by a junior officer named Hideaki Yoshinari who is effectively his right hand man, and their interactions are as funny as they are endearing. This also gives Ichika a handy outside character to talk to. This, combined with her speaking to her friends in the police force means she gets a wealth of outside interaction until the narrative closes her off a bit. However there’s actually a good explanation this time! I mean, if you can take Kei effectively being the game’s yandere as a good explanation.

Kei and Ichika’s interactions evolve in such a way that are incredibly interesting and pretty well written to me. Kei starts out infatuated with the idea of her, and with the idea of dying for her. He flirts, he gets touchy feely, and he makes her heart flutter. But it’s all in service to himself, and his inner monologues don’t really shy away from that fact. I mean, eventually they do truly fall in love. But Ichika growing to like him and thus not checking out of their potential relationship when she does catch wind of his freaky martyr complex, instead helping him work through it is super nice. And just to mention, the CG below the plot relevance header is an awesome and tension filled moment. Definitely surprised me a little bit.

This is a side note, since I have nowhere else to put this but Kei’s um. Incredibly horny. I don’t know how else to put it, but we ramped up from rather vague innuendos and CGs that didn’t amount to much, to Kei openly talking about having sex with Ichika before the route’s climax (joke completely unintentional I swear). I mean this game is for adults, and every character is in their mid to late 20s, but still with how strong he came on I was shocked. I don’t think it helped that I’ve played pretty much every popular game Yuki Kaji has been in, and hearing the voice of the quintessential guy you call when you want him to play either screaming asshole or normal dude talk about how much he wants to have straight sex with you is crazy.

Final Thoughts

I am being completely serious when I say even though I am giving this route a low score that Kei is still perhaps one of my favorite characters in the game. It’s too bad that the greater plot that intersected with his internal conflict was 5+ hours of having copaganda shoved down my throat. I indicated when I started this review that I don’t have good opinions of the police due to the aforementioned issue of my being black, and police in every country have a very very dark history of abusing their power. So I’m not going to act like that didn’t severely lower my enjoyment.

I’m giving this route a 6.5/10.

But like I said, Kei’s an extremely compelling character. So if you include my completely loving him, maybe you can inflate that rating by about 2 points.

Netflix is an ever-changing, constantly growing treasure trove of hidden gems and secret delights (here’s everything new on Netflix UK this month). Sometimes, a teeny bit too secret though.

Who hasn’t sat down to watch a horror movie and found themselves scrolling endlessly, either not being able to find something they’re in the mood for, or not really knowing what half the titles are, or if they’re any good?

We’ve scoured the full current catalogue available to watch in the UK now and picked out the best scary movies. It’s a mix of classic and new, and a range of slashers, horror-coms, mumblegore, monster movies and more to hopefully scratch that itch with ease.

We’ll keep this updated as and when titles drop in and out of the service.

Hereditary (2018)

If you haven’t seen this slice of trauma, the feature debut of Ari Aster, you probably should. If you have seen it, you probably won’t want to again. Toni Collette stars as a woman whose controlling mother has just passed away setting of a series of horrible events. Aster says the film was partly inspired by his own sense of his family being cursed – this a movie absolutely drenched in grief and pain with astonishing performances all round. It’s tough going, but it’s a masterpiece. Read our review.

The Platform (2019)

This existential Spanish horror made a splash at the start of lockdown with it’s tale of prisoner trapped in an enormous vertical prison with a platform at it’s centre which delivers food to the inmate floor by floor starting at the top, so that each floor only gets what the floor above has left over. It’s political, allegorical, it’s clever and it’s very violent.

The Endless (2017)

Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead’s gorgeous sci-fi horror stars the two as brother who escaped from a cult ten years ago and are drawn back in in search of answers when a strange videotape arrives. This is their third movie after Resolution and Spring and the two are only growing in strength as directors – The Endless is rammed with indelible imagery and deeply unsettling moments within a plot that is a joy to unpick.

What Keeps You Alive (2018)

Couple Jackie and Jules head to a remote woodland cabin to celebrate their first wedding anniversary but things go bad… Ok this sounds like the most generic slasher in the world but trust us it’s not. Twists hit early on (that we’d hate to spoil) and the tension ramps up fast in a very effective cat and mouse chase with a female bent. This comes from Colin Minihan who made Grave Encounters – this isn’t similar but both have a disorientating sense of place. Read our review.

Orphan (2009)

Released during the heyday of Dark Castle’s mid-budget horror splurge, Orphan is one of those genre films with an absolutely ludicrous (and therefore thoroughly enjoyable) twist, which we will not spoil for you. Peter Sarsgaard and Vera Farmiga star as a couple mourning the loss of their baby, who decided to adopt a little Russian girl called Esther from the local orphanage. Things quickly start to go very, very wrong as the pair start to suspect that wee Esther – who insists on dressing like a spooky doll – isn’t all she appears to be. Check out our review.

Insidious (2010)

The many sequels may have yielded diminishing returns but the first of this franchise, about a couple (Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne) whose comatose son appeared to be trapped in another realm by a evil spirit, is a very effective chiller. Horror genius James Wan directs, and the first half of this movie at least is pretty much guaranteed to make you jump out of your skin.

Annihilation (2018)

An all star cast including Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Tessa Thompson, plus the quality direction of Alex Garland wasn’t enough to secure this horror sci-fi based on Jeff Vandermeer’s novel a theatrical release in the UK. Nevermind, that just means you can watch it for free on Netflix. Portman joins a crew of women exploring the mysterious Area X where he husband ventured some time before and came back changed. It’s a weird, unfamiliar landscape of beautiful flora and terrifying fauna defying explanation until the strange, indelible finale (not sure what it means? Have a read of this explainer). Daybreakers (2009)

You’ll get a little bit of everything with this Spierig Brothers curio. It was the film that really got the directing team noticed and it’s not hard to see why. Set in a dystopian world where basically everyone has been turned into a vampire, one corporation thinks it’d be a bloody (sorry) good idea to track down all the surviving humans and…well, basically milk them. Ethan Hawke stars as a vampire haematologist who starts to think there might be another way for this story to go after he’s collared by a former vampire (Willem Dafoe), who can cure everyone. (Living) dead good. Check out our review.

The Bar (2017)

Slightly bonkers Spanish horror thriller which sees a bunch of strangers stuck in a busy Madrid cafe when snipers begin shooting anyone who tries to leave. Confusion and personality clashes abound in this economical single location chiller with a dark sense of human as the inhabitants slowly discover what’s going on, who’s responsible and try to work out if and how they will survive.

The Cabin in the Woods (2012)

Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon’s love/hate letter to the horror genre felt like something of a game changer when it finally arrived (it was shelved for several years because of financial issue with original distributor MGM). Chris Hemsworth and Haley Bennett star in a double layer story about ordinary kids vacationing in a woodland cabin, with Bradley Whitford and Richard Jenkins as very particular kinds of bureaucrats up to something in the background. No spoilers, just watch. Here’s our review.

Cargo (2017)

Martin Freeman stars in this Netflix original developed from a short directed by Ben Howling and Yolanda Ramke. Set in the Australian outback, Freeman is a father trying to find someone to protect his child in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. More wistful and emotional than that sounds on paper, there’s a fascinating subplot about an Aboriginal girl mourning her father and the final set piece is unforgettable. Check out our review.

Lifeforce (1985)

A Cannon Films classic directed by late Texas Chain Saw legend Tobe Hooper, people are still discovering the ’80s madness that is Lifeforce. Originally entitled Space Vampires, it’s exactly what you’d expect, and so much more. Nude, energy sucking bat creatures are brought back to Earth after an interstellar mission finds a gaggle of them lying dormant in Halley’s Comet, and it all goes very badly for the planet. You can expect a scenery-chewing Patrick Stewart to pop up in between the tits and gore. Not literally! Although, sometimes literally.

Creep (2014)

No, not the one set on the tube, this ‘mumblegore’ horror is far weirder than that. Director Patrice Brice plays Aaron, a videographer hired by Mark Duplass’s Josef to make a video for his kid to watch after he’s died of a terminal illness. Or does he? Playing on the power of politeness and the awkwardness of male relationships this is a highly original, itchily uncomfortable watch. Creep 2 is also on Netflix, and also good!

Another smart sensory-based horror, this time from Oculus and Doctor Sleep man Mike Flanagan. This home invasioner sees deaf writer Maddie (Kate Siegel) attacked in her woodland retreat by a masked stranger. He uses her inability to hear to sneak around and terrorise her, but she has tricks of her own up her sleeve. Check out our review.

The Invitation (2015)

Karyn Kusama (Jennifer’s Body, Destroyer) just keeps knocking it out of the park (and she’s recently been attached to a Dracula movie from Blumhouse Productions), and with The Invitation she continued to secure her place as one of the best directors around. Here, Will (Logan Marshall-Green) and his girlfriend go to a party held by his formerly suicidal ex-wife, and discover that she seems to be happier than she ever was, but Will starts to suspect that rather than healthily coping with her mental illness, she may well have joined a doomsday cult instead, and be planning to kill them all. Paranoia and tension are at the max in this bad boy. Here’s our review.

Little Evil (2017)

Comedy horror from Eli Craig who made the wonderful Tucker and Dale Vs Evil. This time he’s playing on creepy kid tropes, particular those from The Omen movies. Adam Scott plays a man who discovers his new wife’s (Evangeline Lilly) son might actually be the anti-christ. And because it’s Eli Craig, of course it’s funny and very good natured as well as playing with the genre.

Gerald’s Game (2017)

Another Mike Flanagan offering here – what can we say? he’s damn good! – as Jessie (a spectacular Carla Guigino) and her husband Gerald drive to a remote house to try and spice up their marriage with a bit of gentle BDSM. One problem: Jessie is not into it. At all. Two problems: Gerald carks it, leaving her tied up with only her cunning to help her free herself from her prone, handcuffed predicament. Three problems: a mythical, supernatural killer may be in the house. Stephen King, you’ve done it again. Read our review.

Ravenous (2017)

Unusual Canadian zombie movie (in French) which sees remaining stragglers after an outbreak of the infected band together in disparate groups travelling to find other survivors. Ravenous sets up its infected as worshipping a sort of new religion of found items (chairs, TVs etc.) making comment on the zombification of society. It’s also funny and quite scary, so there’s that.

Veronica (2017)

Loosely based on a true story, Veronica is set in Madrid in 1991 and follows a young woman who messes with a Ouija board who thinks she’s accidentally summoned an evil spirit. Director by Paco Plaza, one of the two directors behind [REC], the movie gained minor notoriety when it first landed on Netflix because of a few viewers finding it overly scary. It’s true there are some seriously creepy bits (but you’ll be fine!).

The Perfection (2018)

Get Out‘s Allison Williams and Dear White People‘s Logan Browning star in this twisty, trashy but nonetheless enjoyable tale of two musical prodigies hothoused at a mysterious academy. It’s lurid and lavish (and it’s got some fairly dodgy sexual politics, we’d warn you) but great lead performances and a tricksy three act structure that keeps you guessing, make this an entertaining and unusual Friday night pick. September 10: The 100 1x06 Fog of War

Mmmm watching another ep and it’s been less than six months since the last one?! * jinxes self *

Bellarke date at the outside cafe. (WHY IS THIS OUTSIDE CAFE NOT IN MORE FICS? WHY IS IT NOT IN MY FICS?)

I don’t always love Clarke’s art tbh but I do love her Mount Weather sketch.

I have a hard time believing they would wait two days just sitting on their hands, Abby or no Abby. YOU GUYS WERE THE LEADERS. JUST LEAD STUFF.

“We’re at war. We’ve all done things,” is, like, first, beyond the point, because even in war, one doesn’t usually attack civilian villages. (Unless one is a terrorist.) And second, it’s weird that Bellamy would be defending Finn? Not really sure how to read that. Unless his hatred of Grounders is truly that intense, which is possible. And third, are they really still at war? Because after attacking the dropship, the Grounders have done... literally nothing? Like it’s a semi-war scenario.

“Next round’s on me.” Do they have to.... pay for things...? With what lol?

“Salvaged Monty’s still. Now if we could only salvage Monty.” Someone here has a sense of humor. Also lol @ everyone at Camp Jaha using a teenager’s illegal still.

Really, the “pardon for surviving” should not include time on the ground, because pardons aren’t forward looking. Also they bring back the idea of trying Finn later. They just don’t want to deal with Murphy and Finn, and don’t really see the massacre of Grounders as a big deal, which, I am a Sky Person partisan to the last, does not reflect well on them. I think also they still haven’t figured out what tf their judicial system on the ground is, and just don’t want to deal with that yet either. Which isn’t a great excuse but it’s of a piece with how this show deals with society-building questions in general. (By... not.)

And Finn still doesn’t even feel bad.

And Murphy thinks Clarke and Finn are still together...? I guess that makes sense given how long he was away. He’s ALWAYS behind on delinquent gossip.

Clarke to Murphy: “Just because they pardoned you doesn’t mean I have.” Another line that should be iconic.

If Mount Weather is the reason they never heard from any other Ark Stations then they should have heard from more of them after S2 just putting that out there.

Raven is so beautiful.

And I’m sorry but she’s completely in love with Clarke here.

“You and your friends are not soldiers...” Hmmmm except in a certain sense they kind of are. Love this s2 adults versus delinquents conflict though.

Anyway I realize this is just to get them going back to Mount Weather but they were apparently doing this radio mission to get more Guards from other stations, which never happened, which sort of reminds me of Day Trip and the ‘winter supplies’ excursion when apparently winter doesn’t exist in the future anyway.

Literally only now at the credits.... Why am I like this?

So Maya couldn’t survive on the ground, obviously, because blood isn’t good enough, it has to be bone marrow, which, fine, for plot purposes--but what if she could???

“I know the plan was to assimilate them into the gene pool.” COMPLETELY forgot about that. So they did have a reason for being so nice to them. That is a rather long term plan though...

With the delinquent blood, they’ll “live longer and feel better.” I wonder what the sickness rate is, then. What the quality of life is, low vitamin d aside.

“If I agree to harvest those kids, then I won’t deserve to see [the outside] again.”

That Finn is a good tracker is, like, not a retcon in the sense that this was true in season 1, but still a semi retcon in the sense that nothing in the very early episodes implies he’s Mr. Earth Skills. (Unlike, say... Wells.)

Privileged Ark people really do just throw rules around and up and down however they like. Like, Abby clearing her daughter’s friend because “he was trying to save his friends” even though what he did was objectively much worse than pretty much anything the 100 were imprisoned for? Or other people killed for? Hmmm,, yeah, okay.

Jaha’s death wish transformed into a lazy acceptance that he is invincible is truly one of the best character arcs on this show imo. Infuriating but amazing.

“How many times on the Ark did we go two days without water?”

He recognizes the prison as a train station, which is not objectively surprising but I bet the Grounders don’t know what it is. Somehow. Since memory isn’t a thing in the future either.

On the one hand, it’s reasonable to think that Finn’s attack was coordinated from above but on the other hand, these two prisoners literally could not have ordered it, because they have been... imprisoned... the entire time. And I mean truly putting two Sky People who could not themselves have been involved in another Sky Person’s murder spree into some sort of Saw scenario in response to that murder spree really isn’t “justice” in any sense of the word. Like truly the JD in me is just SCREAMING. There is no nexus between the people you have and the person you’re angry at, other than “Sky Person” but the thread is so tangled you’re just.... throwing around bloodshed for lolz. (I know it’s a test and that part isn’t dumb but the scaffolding of the test is DUMB.)

I am still not over that someone gave Jasper a stuffed toy bear as a thank you for giving Maya blood. Also, it looks like... an alarm clock?

I like Dante but every time he says “Jasper” it just creeps me out. Maybe it’s the way he’s, uh, playing him.

It is 100% true that Mount Weather was not meant to last that long. At least not in the sense of ‘as a closed facility.’

Ridiculous as it is to pardon Finn AND take him adventuring AND give him a gun, I like the tension between him and the others, that they have officially forgiven him, and want to still love him, but are wary of him, scared of him, for good reason. For all that people are constantly ‘doing bad things’ and yelling at each other about it, this scenario doesn’t really have a parallel anywhere else in the canon.

“According to Clarke, before the bombs, there were buildings everywhere here. I’m guessing some of the had access to the bunker. So we’re looking for ruins. Anything man-made.”

Bellamy says he and O aren’t under the Guard command. But in a way, aren’t they? Like aren’t the Guard basically in authority over all Arkers? I know I’m overthinking but does he see himself as more delinquent than Arker? Especially with the “our people” are in Mount Weather.

All those mice.... Or rodents....

What a scenario: Clarke and Finn hiding from the acid fog in a weird little personal bunker where they once fucked, and now there’s a dead body in it, and Finn put it there. Not even Olav can top this.

Raven playing with the radio is my kink.

Parking garage as tomb. Who would protect a parking garage with a big-ass steal door that protects cars from radiation? If it does lead to Mount Weather (no recollection if it does) I guess it could be... part of it? Idk. Nice aesthetic though.

Bellamy is very comfortable calling people Sir. Polite young man.

So Clarke’s Dad’s watch returns to Clarke. I can’t remember what ultimately happened to it. Is it basically tainted now?

Monty’s obscene jealousy of Maya just gets me every single time. Makes up for the horrendous second hand embarrassment I’m getting from the rest of this scene.

“Hey, it’s pizza day! Who’s hungry?” uhhhhhhhhhhmmmmm So natural. Cute dress though.

How did she figure out the breach wasn’t an accident? Or that there is surveillance? Anyway now that she knows she was experimented on, and that Jasper was experimented on, one would assume she is pissed. One would assume that’s part of why she shows them the Grounders. Also to stop Jasper perhaps from embroiling his people even more with (her own) untrustworthy people. Because truly it is in part to save them, but it’s also a real risk to herself, admitting this terrible thing she’s been a part of.

“To get you to agree to be her blood brother.” He’s not wrong but that language is sooooo jealous--both revealing the threat he feels (because Jasper is his ‘brother’) and diminishing the JasperMaya relationship (which he knows to be romantic, and is turning familiar.)

Why did the show ever try to top the pure horror of the Grounder Torture Prison?

“What are we supposed to do?” / “Die.” Another Iconic Exchange. This is Monty’s morality: uncompromising. Are the standards he sets for himself hypocritical or consistent? Also, some foreshadowing lol.

I wonder what Monty’s allegiance is to the other kids... Would he have irradiated the Mountain for them if Jasper were safe? Legit question because he defects to his mom’s side pretty fast in S3, and he would 100% leave Mount Weather through the side door just like Clarke, at this point, which Jasper refuses to do even if it were possible. I am intrigued by this scene and the switching of plans/different points of view.

So this is the revelation that the acid fog is a Mount Weather weapon. I always really liked that twist.

Okay so this explains why they didn’t get to the other stations, because they choose to keep the tower up to listen to Mount Weather, but it’s actually not a tough call bc if you defeat Mount Weather and take your people back, then you can get rid of the blocking signal, and then find your other people, so win-win, you just have to go in order and on that note, why did it take 3 months to find only one station??

Is that a....hand crank mp3?? Got a lot of juice from just a little bit of cranking.

There are a hella lot of storylines in this episode. I completely forgot about Jaha and Kane and Lexa.

Kane’s continuing death wish makes him utterly unreasonable. What in a million years makes you think that the Grounders value sacrifice as opposed to just being sadists? I mean, you don’t know. You’re imposing your value system and also your thought processes on them. You’re also assuming that if one of you killed the other, the survivor would actually get something, like a chance to negotiate, which is probably not true--in fact, Gustus basically told you as much with “We’ll hear the terms of your surrender form the survivor.” Winning means nothing except you get to surrender!! And probably die!! They are not coming to you in good faith is what I’m trying to say and having watched the whole season I know I am Right.

“You didn’t order the massacre.” / “Not that one.” Honestly dude get over it lol. Interesting that Jaha, although he has transformed in some ways, keeps to the old lines, about survival, the human race--and our people, if the human race is broader than just the Ark, which it is, and no big deal. So in some ways his morality has not changed at all, at its core.

Look, I’m sorry, not to be that person, but he probably would have been better off killing Lexa there. I mean, I know he’s choosing ‘an innocent’ in his mind but... what a power move to behead the Commander WHILE you’re her prisoner. Good old Jaha, smart and quick and sure of himself.

Just uh not quick enough at murdering I guess.

I’m no Lexa fan but that was an excellent entrance and it remains an excellent entrance. Also while I never thought she was as smart as people said, because name me another tactical decision she made that was actually good, this was a smart ploy. And probably the most subtle thing any Grounder character ever did, even if it does end with her basically beating Jaha up ‘as a message’ as if she were a gangster.

Is this the episode that introduces Blood Must Have Blood? Already Tired of it tbh.

This Clarke and Finn scene is so sad. I realize that they purposefully made him unredeemable at this point, that this story line was always intended to be the method by which he was written off, and that there’s only so much awkwardness you can write around this scenario, but nevertheless it would have been interesting to see Finn in the long term, in a way. Not redeemed.. I don’t know. Whatever I’m thinking it’s not in the range of this show, though, for sure.

Did Jasper and Monty tell all of the 47 everything? To get them to volunteer? (Answer: No, but they told at least Harper and Miller, maybe a few more.)

“How high are you right now?” We were SO robbed of more intoxicated!Monty scenes.

Jasper and Dante: creepy creepy creepy.

“There’s been a Wallace in this office since the bombs.” So glad to know we immediately reverted to some sort of pseud-monarchy post-nuclear war. That said it’s only been 97 years so that’s like 3 Wallaces tops.

Prioritizing the radio also means of course admitting that getting the 47 out of MW is a priority for Abby/Ark PTB, which wasn’t exactly clear before.

I’ve never been a fan of the “Build a brace for yours” line and I’m still not, because I think conflating physical and mental injuries is not exactly helpful, but I guess I appreciate it as a look into Raven’s mind--Raven, who has never really understood mental scars and never really does--and the soft way she says it is a sort of forgiveness. Not really forgiveness she has the right to offer, and in a way a very brash thing to do, because this was literally a war crime that her best friend committed, but nevertheless.

Jaha: appears. Everyone else: what the absolute fuck.

So on that mission they accomplished... literally nothing they set out to do lol.

What is that random shot of Camp Jaha doing there? They’re not within sight of it. They’re still where they set up tents.

I want to point out that this is the FIRST time the Grounders have demanded that the Sky People “leave” or implied in any way that they consider the Sky People to be on “their” land, and that this was never an issue in Season 1, when their beef seemed to be for things like crossing the river at Mount Weather, accidentally dropping their flares on a Grounder village, and torturing a Grounder spy. Growing up as a member of the royal family Doyoung always received everything he could have ever wanted. As a child he was gifted the finest toys in the kingdom without having to worry about getting in trouble if they were broken prematurely. Clothing made from the finest fabric, manufactured by the best tailors in the land. Doyoung must receive the most durable swords crafted by the most talented blacksmith there is, and any horse which was not the best, did not suffice. He excelled at many things. He was excellent at wielding a sword and rarely ever lost a match, he rode his horse with such elegance and carried such a persuasive tone in his voice.

Doyoung was also a sterling scholar, his father, the king, would easily dub him the most astute of his children. Spending most of his time in the castle library from a very young age, Doyoung developed a quite eloquent way of speaking. Once she noticed that her son had a silver-tongue the queen made sure he never ran out of books to read.

Doyoung constantly received invitations to balls from royal families residing in lands far and wide after hearing stories of his great accomplishments, some of which were greatly exaggerated possibly being altered on their journey before reaching curious ears. Doyoung never could refuse an invite, as his father claimed attending the ball would benefit their kingdom greatly. When put that way Doyoung felt inclined to travel the great distance, for the sake of his kingdom. Though princesses often grew interested in Doyoung through the tales they heard, it was his image that had them smitten. His tall, slender figure called much attention, his facial features mesmerising and his smile was deathly poisonous; and yet, a lot of young women claimed that if they had to leave so soon, they wouldn’t want to go any other way. He was both admired and hated by the princes of his neighbouring kingdoms who saw him as tough competition, though his attitude towards them would describe it more as a friendly rivalry. You could say that Doyoung was the apple of his father’s eye which would be the case, if he wasn’t so outspoken. It was never a problem, but when Doyoung was of age and started to attend hearings alongside his father he started to speak against him.

“If you have no evidence that this man has committed the crime you’re accusing him of, then you have no right to pass judgement!” He said one day, after he’d had enough of his father’s unjust actions. Doyoung’s words displeased his father, who dismissed him and notified him that he was not to be seen at the hearings until he had calmed himself down.

That night Doyoung couldn’t get a wink of sleep, too haunted by the harrowing thoughts of the innocent civilians who have been incarcerated or executed simply because his father did not care enough to discover more to the story before taking action. The king received the cold shoulder from his son for quite some time, but with Doyoung’s position in the hierarchy being lower than his father’s, he knew there was no way he could win. Instead of partaking in childish antics, he decided that he would reform the kingdom once he took the throne. He hadn’t any rush, “Haste leads to waste” is what he told himself. He would take this time to carefully plan everything out and kept it all a secret as he didn’t want anyone to meddle in his business. Doyoung had no intention of dethroning his father. Doing this might cause a civil war if any of his father’s loyal followers were to disagree with his beliefs, thus giving other kingdoms a chance to either attack or watch as they wipe themselves out. And despite the fact that Doyoung did not agree with how his father handled certain things, he had to admit that he was excellent at running his kingdom.

Doyoung continued with his daily life, nothing was unusual. He decided to go out for fresh air and insisted he be accompanied by no one. If he had known that on that day the universe would be plotting against him, he would have brought one of his royal guards along. Unaware of the danger hidden far in the woods Doyoung continued his path towards the forest in the outskirts of the kingdom, he always made sure not to stray away from the path. He followed the same routine each time. The path he took was decorated with beautifully colored flowers and large trees towering above him, he took his time to smell the flowers - quite literally - walking down the road slowly with a firm grip on the lead rope he used to lead his horse. Once he came across the river he would stop to make his horse drink whilst he sat on the grass admiring the sky. But today was different, his horse was uneasy and Doyoung had very little control over her. His attempts to calm her did little to nothing and he decided it would be best to return home. However, Doyoung did not feel comfortable taking a different route, out of fear of losing his way. Instead he followed his usual path, except this time a bit faster. Right as his worries had begun to diminish, a shadow like figure appeared in front of him. It all happened so fast that Doyoung wasn’t even sure if the shadow was a person or a wild animal. He had no way to find out as his horse was too startled to obey any of his instructions. With his horse moving at such great speed not taking nearby rocks and branches into consideration, it was no surprise Doyoung catapulted off of the horse’s back, landing on the earth with a loud thud. Much like his horse, his body was no longer listening to him. All he could do was lay there, with an immense throbbing in his head, as he watched the horse gallop away. And just moments later everything faded to black.

Doyoung’s eyes fluttered open as he took in the unfamiliar surroundings. It seemed as though he was lying on a cot - which he would describe as uncomfortable for lack of better words - in a small house filled with junk that made it seem even smaller. Doyoung wanted to investigate further, he had no idea where he was, but he couldn’t waste any time and must return to the castle immediately. His attempts to sit up were quickly put on halt as he heard a voice from inside the house. “Don’t try to get up, you’re still hurt.” Turning to the direction of the voice Doyoung saw you approaching with a tray carrying a bowl and a mug. You said nothing as you placed said tray in front of him and walked away. Upon closer inspection he discovered that you had provided him with a bowl of soup and a cup of tea. Every bone in his body told him not to even breathe in the direction of the food you had made, there was no way to be sure you weren’t trying to poison him. When you returned you were a bit shocked to find the tray placed on the floor, both the soup and tea untouched.

“You need to eat if you want to get better” you said with your back towards him. Doyoung saw you reach into a cabinet and grab a bandage before walking in his direction. It wasn’t until then that the painful pounding in his head became obvious and he felt a thin fabric wrapped around the circumference of his skull. Doyoung was suddenly filled with fear and panic, but put on a fake facade, thinking it would be best for you not to know how he felt as you might use it to your advantage and his disadvantage. Doyoung noticed that you intended to change the bandage on his head but did not trust you enough to let you do so. He put up a childish act, not sitting still for you to do your job. Once you grew tired and questioned why he was acting that way, he replied that it was because he didn’t trust you. And you couldn’t blame him as you hadn’t explained anything to him, mainly because you weren’t exactly sure what had happened either. Of course, you didn’t have anything to hide and figured that telling him what you knew wouldn’t do any harm.

“I found you unconscious in the woods, so I brought you back to my home to tend to your wounds” is all you said. You had hoped that would suffice, but soon after he was showering you with questions.

“Do you live alone?”

“I do”

“Are there others nearby”

“No”

“How long have I been here”

“About three days, you must have hit your head pretty hard”

That’s where the panic set in. He had been away from the kingdom for three days. Were they looking for him? Were they worried? Did they think he ran away? All of this would ruin his chances of taking the throne. If his father got the impression that Doyoung no longer wanted to rule the kingdom, the throne would be handed over to his naive younger brother. Doyoung had no time to waste and he immediately leaped off the cot only to come into contact with the floor seconds later. His head was spinning, and he could barely stand up on his own let alone reach the castle. You helped him lay back down, all while nagging him that he fell because he was too proud to eat what you had prepared for him. Understanding the gravity of the situation Doyoung complied and ate his meal silently while you explained where your house was located as best as you could.

When Doyoung no longer had any more questions, it was your turn to ask. When questioned about how he got hurt, Doyoung explained that he was unsure what had happened and that the only thing he knew was that he fell off his horse. You also asked why he so desperately wanted to return to the kingdom and if that wasn’t enough to insult him, your follow up sentence was.

“All those who live there are ignorant fools mindlessly abiding the unfair rules of the royal family”

Never in his life had Doyoung been so offended. For you to slander not only his family but also his people was unforgivable.

“How dare you!” he proclaimed, outraged at your behavior. “I could have you incarcerated for this”

You blankly stared at him for a moment before bursting out laughing, only adding fuel to the fire which was igniting within Doyoung’s irises.

“You’re gonna arrest me?” you said in disbelief

This entire time Doyoung didn’t bother introducing himself as he assumed you were already aware that he was the prince but didn’t treat him as such because you weren’t taught proper manners. Now he had reason to believe you really did not know who he was. In an attempt to assert his dominance in the situation Doyoung announced to you that he was the prince, raising his hand to present you with the ring that sat on his finger, confirming that he indeed was part of the royal family. Unfortunately for Doyoung he was no longer within his kingdom and you made sure he was aware of that. You approached him slowly, hands behind your back and leaned forward, whispering “You’re no prince of mine” before walking away.

You were not obligated to help Doyoung with anything, but you still did so because you saw him as an equal and treated him the same way you would anyone else. You, of course, couldn’t care less what happened within the confines of the walls that separated the kingdom from the remaining land. Yet you couldn’t help but sympathise with the young man who so frantically wanted to return home. It had been three weeks since Doyoung discovered himself at your house and while he was in better condition, his self-assurance was at an all-time low. It had already been so long, and it seemed as though no one was going to find him. Hell, he wasn’t even sure if they were looking. Doyoung’s bleak attitude was starting to take a toll on you and you weren’t having it. You rarely talked, his complaints and constant whining too much for you to handle. But you’d had enough and decided it was time you sat him down and had a conversation. You asked him if he was prepared to return home and that you were willing to provide him with your own horse. He declined, saying that you’d need it for yourself, but you explained that you would be able to obtain a horse from an acquaintance who lived a few miles away. He hesitated, unsure of whether or not he really did want to return. His mind polluted with negative thoughts. Doyoung muttered to himself that there was no point in going back if there was a chance his parents had already disowned him for abandoning their nation. Nothing you said to dismiss his intrusive thoughts seemed to get through to him. After losing patience you lashed out at him for his lack of faith in himself.

“What is the matter with you! Have you gone blind? You’re the prince and that kingdom is rightfully yours.”

“I have failed my people and do not deserve to be king. I was careless and ended up getting hurt in an irresponsible manor.”

“Why are you being so pessimistic about this, you could have died!”

Doyoung looked up at you in shock, asking himself if you really cared that much about him. He wasn’t sure if you were expecting an answer and opted to keep his mouth shut. Soon after you continued, your voice a tone higher than before as you paced up and down the small cabin.

“What is it that’s holding you back? You’re overwhelmed with ideas that you’ve put in your head. There’s- there’s so much more to running a kingdom than just being there.”

It was obvious you had no intention on stopping now.

“You’re in control of who you are and what you do, you just have to get rid of all the negative thoughts that live inside your head. You’re so overcome with self-doubt that you can’t even think straight anymore. You’re young, you have time to fix this!”

You stopped pacing and turned to look at him, sighing deeply before telling him.

“When you got here all you did was talk about how you had to return to your people. Even if your father doesn’t believe you deserve that crown you will reclaim it. No one else deserves to be king; it is your destiny.”

Your speech was enough to send Doyoung’s confidence flying through the roof. He stood up and announced that he would like to return home as soon as possible.

The following morning Doyoung was packed up and ready to go. You explained to him how to return to the path he was originally on and he’d know how to get back from there. Doyoung thanked you for all that you had done, despite the fact that you didn’t fancy him much. He appreciated all your help but couldn’t leave without the answer to one question.

“Why go through such lengths to get me back to the kingdom?”

“Because, there was no logic in your sadness. Your worries weren’t based off facts, they were based off assumptions. A word of advice from me to you, misery has nothing to offer.”

Doyoung thanked you once more and started his journey back home. Before he could get far he heard your voice call out “If you’re gonna be a king, you better be a damn good one!”

He quickly glanced back and smiled, continuing onward.

Once Doyoung was close enough for the royal guards to see him, they hastily made their way towards him and brought him safely inside. Word quickly spread that the prince who had been missing for almost a month had been found alive. That day they celebrated, but not a moment went by where Doyoung didn’t think of you. He then realised he never asked you why you didn’t live inside the kingdom. During dinner Doyoung’s father wanted to hear about what had happened and how Doyoung managed to survive. Doyoung explained that you saved him by treating his wounds and providing him with food and shelter. Though he hadn’t mentioned your name, his father had a general idea of who his son was referring to but decided to ask just to be certain. He grimaced when Doyoung spoke your name, confirming his speculations. He explained to Doyoung that you and your family had been exiled, never to step foot in the kingdom again. There were rumors that your father had performed treason, though it was never actually confirmed. The king could no longer trust your father as a royal guard and forced him and his family out of the kingdom in a quiet manor to avoid problems arising. Apparently, your mother had sought home in a different kingdom, but you refused to continue living under unfair laws and stayed behind. The reason your family was exiled was abstruse from Doyoung’s perspective, but there was nothing he could do. The king’s word was law.

Doyoung couldn’t live with the thought of you not being able to enter the kingdom, especially when you had done nothing wrong. There was not enough evidence against your father, and even if there was why should you pay the price. He decided to do some investigation of his own, questioning several retired guards in an attempt to discover anything that might help. It took Doyoung quite some time, but he finally managed to contact the guard who accused your father of treason. After talking to him for a moment he admitted that he unrightfully accused your father, having had him confused with someone else. He would have announced this sooner but was afraid of what might happen to him and his family. The man agreed to tell the king the truth as he felt it was the right thing to do. Doyoung explained to his father that his endeavors weren’t to put the man in jail, but to bring you back to where you belong. It didn’t take much convincing; the king was ashamed that he had taken action before he was sure of what had happened. He ordered two guards to accompany Doyoung on his way to retrieve you. To say you were surprised to see Doyoung again would be an understatement. When he was close enough for him to hear you, you asked what his business on your property was, to which he simply answered, “I’m here to take you home.”

You declined, claiming that this was your home and you had no intention of leaving. With the two guards close behind him you didn’t dare say too much. But Doyoung wasn’t leaving that easily, not without a fight at least. He explained to you that your father had been innocent and that you were no longer exiled. But after what had happened could you really trust anyone in that kingdom? It was as if Doyoung had read your mind, and he assured you that he would do everything in his power to keep you safe. He insisted you live in the castle and told you that he would always be by your side. It took a lot of courage on your part to return to the kingdom after such a long time, but you were willing. After packing all your necessities, you turned to Doyoung and told him that he’d make an exceptional king, to which he replied with “And you’d make an excellent queen.”

A Final Space Rant

I wrote this for a TBS questionnaire, but I wanted to post it here as well. Now, everything that follows was written for the section titled “What do you NOT like about Final Space?”, so it’s all gonna sound negative, but I need to make this clear: I LOVED FINAL SPACE. I genuinely loved it and everything that follows was said with the intention of getting it seen by the right people so that season two could be even better. I am by no means attacking the show or its creators, I have nothing but love and admiration for those guys. I’ve loved Olan and his work since around 2010 or something like that, and even though my sense of humour has changed to the point that it’s almost completely different to his, I’m still always a fan of his work, because it all still has the same heart, and it’s obvious that he makes it with such passion.

Now for the more negative sounding stuff (again, all said with love).

1. THE PACING. Not a single story beat really had anything close to sufficient time to hit and then sink in effectively. Avocato’s death, for example. I can understand the actual death part happening abruptly and being over just as fast, if it's done well that can be devastating (think Sirius Black). The death itself is brilliant, but once he's dead that's just kinda it. You’ve got a fantastic monologue from Gary at the beginning of the next episode, but beyond Little Cato yammering about revenge, no one ever really mentions Avocato ever again. For me (and, from what I can tell from the fan scene, a staggering amount of other people), Avocato was my favourite character, and I don’t think his exit was managed particularly well. It’s like the show was saying: “Oh no! Avocato died! We’re all devastated! Aaaaaand we’re moving on. Avocato who?” Not to mention the part where we find out he was Lord Commander’s second in command. That needed half an episode in itself, but instead was allowed a little under two minutes. Beyond “I’m angry and I want my son back” that was Avocato’s characterisation in its entirety, but because of time restraints you could’ve missed it by turning away to sneeze. (I’m adding this part on after I’ve finished writing. Despite what’s been said by Olan, I still find myself convinced that Avocato is going to return in some form or another. I think this has happened, partly due to pure hope, but also because I’m so genuinely struggling to accept that THAT is how they’d handle the death of a main character. Like “okay, maybe they’re holding back on actually saying goodbye so that we’re more ready to accept his return later on.”)

2. TONE DEAF. As a title that’s pretty severe, but it’s the best way I can think to say it. The show’s biggest assets are the story and its heart. But BOTH of those things are constantly undermined by the comedy. Though my sense of humour sometimes differs from Olan’s, that’s not even what I’m talking about. So I’m not even gonna mention the jokes that fall flat. What bothers me is the fact that there are so often jokes where there shouldn’t be, which means some important moments aren’t allowed the impact they deserve. The biggest offender is Gary’s idiolect. It’s 100% Olan, which is great, but it’s also 100% off-putting, which sucks. In my opinion, it needs to be toned WAAAAAY down. Not removed completely, it’s Olan’s voice and it gives the show something unique, but it needs to be toned down. The moment when John locks the door on Gary and he’s pleading for him to stop; that’s Olan’s acting at it’s peak. The man is such a talented actor with fantastic emotional range, but his stylistic choices in writing and line delivery significantly diminish its impact. Most of it is all so jarringly fake-sounding that you become incredibly aware that you’re just watching a cartoon. When something really significant is happening and Gary’s joking all the while, it throws any and all tension or sincerity right out the window. If there’s a scene that isn’t just included for comedy, then personally I don’t think Gary should be talking like that. For example: the scene where that family thinks he’s their dead mother, it’s fine! He can talk like a deranged court jester to his hearts content. The only scene with real emotional sincerity between him and his best and only friend, however, maybe hold back on the inane goofiness a little. I found it really tough to like Gary as a character when he was talking like that, which was pretty much all of the time. Whilst Olan has said Gary is the way he is because his five years in complete isolation wore away at his sanity, I didn’t get that from the show at all. In fact, he even acts like that before he’s imprisoned anyway, so as explanations go it’s not a very good one. Off the top of my head I can count five moments where the show took itself as seriously as it should have. Five. And it’s a genuine shame.

3. CHARACTERIZATION. For me, there was an unfortunate lack of any significant characterization. Gary, being the lead, of course received the most love from the writing department. We got the whole thing with his dad, which was handled masterfully, and then there’s his loyalty and his goofiness. Avocato on the other hand, was angry and wanted his son back. That’s about it, that was his entire character. Quinn was supposed to be fiercely independent and a badass, but to me right up until her sacrifice she just seemed like a bit of an ass. To everyone. All the time. And as much as it pains me I have to mention the romance. I never understood why Gary loved Quinn. It was infatuation followed by five years of clamouring obsession. I would be amazed if anyone who watched it was sincerely rooting for the relationship from the get-go. And from Quinn’s perspective there’s even less evidence to suggest a romance, but here we are. The creepy obsessive guy got the girl by wearing her down. It sounds more like a tragedy than a romance.

I’ve heard that season two will have 13 episodes, which is great. It’s giving me confidence for the series by making me think that the people involved have had the same concerns as I have (at least regarding time), and they’re genuinely trying to fix them. Olan and the team have such a huge and epic story to tell and having twenty-something minute long episodes with only 10 in a season wasn’t enough, and it’s a real shame. All the things I mentioned in the pacing section were telltale signs of a show’s creators having to really rush things along because they weren’t allowed enough time.

I’m also gonna reiterate that I love the show and I’m really excited for season two. Everything I’ve mentioned here was said with only the best intentions and the hope that with season two, Final Space can live up to its incredible potential.

Speech

I recently had the opportunity to speak at my alma mater. Here is a version of the speech I gave. It’s got life lessons and all that good stuff. I got dry mouth when speaking.

Good evening, everyone. I’m really honored to be speaking here tonight. Let me start by thanking IU and the ACC for inviting me to speak tonight. I especially want to thank Melanie and Sarah for setting up this wonderful event. Melanie has done such a wonderful job nurturing and growing the ACC and all the programs and initiatives that celebrate Asian and Asian-American cultures for the IU community. I’ve known Melanie since before we opened the ACC and it’s hard for me to separate the ACC from Melanie.

A little bit about myself:

I graduated back in 1999. It’s still surprising to me that it’s been 18 years because those years have flown by since I left IU. I was born and raised in Indianapolis. My parents immigrated to the U.S. for work and school…actually, my mom and her sister both graduated from IU. My parents lived in graduate housing back in the early 70’s.

After graduation I moved to Washington D.C. for a job and a new adventure. I barely knew anyone there. I thought I had it all planned out but looking back I really had no idea what I wanted to do. I had taken to the idea of moving someplace new vs. actually having any sort of plan but that’s par for the course when you’re young.

But, before all of that, I was a student here like you all. I still remember the days before the ACC opened when we were all scrambling to finish writing grants and doing whatever was needed to make it a reality. We were designated this broken down house that needed much work to get cleaned up.

After much hard work from many people like Melanie we had this beautiful opening with speeches, a dragon dancing troupe from Chicago…it was great. I was glad to be a very small part of the entire process even though I didn’t quite understand the significance of the moment or really know what I was doing.

I was surprised to get a message from Melanie about coming back here to speak tonight. I try to keep up with the ACC and IU but have to admit I haven't been as engaged as I should be.

After realizing it wasn't a prank I gladly accepted this opportunity to speak. Melanie said the theme was "belonging" and, given the current political and social climate it seems like an appropriate topic to discuss.

I don't have sage advice that will give you that a-ha moment like the Dalai Lama would give. You’re all so smart and much more sophisticated than I ever was at your age but I will share some life lessons I've learned along the way.

Love what you do

I’ll start off with a bit of career advice: love what you do. I’m sure you’ve read articles or heard inspirational speeches from luminaries in business, the arts, or elsewhere saying “Do what you love.” That’s pretty good advice but I think it’s more important to “love what you do” rather than “do what you love.”

It’s great that people like Richard Branson say he does what he loves everyday whether it’s trying to create space travel, run an airline, or hang out with famous people around his private island in the Caribbean. But did he actually do what he loved everyday? I’d guess not. I don’t think he liked looking over paperwork, dealing with lawyers, or dealing with angry customers.

A friend of mine left his comfortable, corporate job in Seattle to go teach at a community college. Not just teach but create a program for people who don’t have the means to go to a traditional university like IU. He doesn’t love the minutiae that comes with being a college instructor but loves what he does. He loves seeing students from less fortunate backgrounds or students who decided to switch careers in their 40’s and 50’s graduate and find jobs.

If you can find pleasure and pride in what you do it will become a type of love. I didn’t figure this out well into adulthood. Been assigned a mundane task? Do a really good job at it, teach someone else, and move onto the next thing.

Find enjoyment in the little things

Second life lesson: Find enjoyment in the little things. Who likes naps? Naps are awesome. I highly recommend them. You will feel much better even after closing your eyes for just 5 minutes. Have you heard of the coffee nap? It’s a short nap you take right after drinking some coffee. I’m not sure it’s scientifically proven but it works for me.

Warm cookies are pretty awesome, too. So is a nice walk or hike.

What I’m trying to say is finding enjoyment in the small things is no small thing. It’s so easy to get caught up in looking for big rewards and big accomplishments but try to take a step back and enjoy the small things. People are complex, life is complex so take comfort in the small things. You’ll feel a certain basic satisfaction and you’ll feel more grateful.

Embarrassment

You will look back at yourself 5 years from now and profoundly be embarrassed. Okay, maybe not profoundly embarrassed but you will look back at yourself with bemusement.

I look back at photos of myself from the IU days or some other time and I just wonder "What were you thinking? Why did you say that?! You actually thought that was a good look?" Facebook has been a source of some really embarrassing photos. In high school I had the hairstyle affectionately known as the "butt cut."

You know, the middle part in your hair. Had the white shell necklace...I'm getting embarrassed thinking about it. Socks with sandals…why?!

But you know what? I also look back on it as a time when I was having fun. If you aren't just a little embarrassed about what you were like back then it might be a sign you aren't progressing or you're really comfortable with yourself. More power to you if that's the latter case.

Looking back I'm also embarrassed by some of the things I said and the way I acted. Like any other person I've done irrational things out of anger, jealousy, and happiness. There's no good way to say "sorry" but these past experiences are reminders of what mistakes to avoid in the future and can help you become that ever-improving person.

Tough Times

Tough times are coming. You will have all tough times. I’m not talking about not getting the grade you want or missing out on a party tough times. I’m talking about real tough times where you have overcome loss, sadness, and disappointment.

Some you have already had to endure those times. Everyone will eventually have to deal with these tough times. But if can get through these tough times or help others get through tough times then the good times will seem better.

That surly person you see may be going through some seriously tough times so maybe take a minute to think about it before snapping at her or him.

There are silver linings to those difficult and trying situations…I can’t tell you what they are or when you’ll find them but I know they are there. And you will get stronger from the tough times if you don’t let them pull you down forever.

Empathy

A valuable trait or skill to have is empathy; being able to see something from someone else’s point of view.

I’m not talking about sympathy. Sympathy is valuable, too, but it’s a temporary feeling compared to empathy. It’s good you feel bad for someone but I think it’s just as important, if not more, to try to understand why someone is suffering.

In my personal opinion, empathy is something that is cultivated and constantly developed throughout your life.

I’ll tell you a story of how I got called out for a lack of empathy. I was working on a large project and the client was just the most difficult person to deal with. If he wasn’t complaining about my team he was telling us we didn’t know anything. One day I found out he had requested that my entire team be removed or fired because he didn’t feel we were doing a good job. Well, I was fuming when I heard about his latest antics and loudly said to my team, “I know what he’s thinking. He wants us fired because we won’t let him do what he wants and we know more than he does.”

I was calmly pulled to the side by a senior advisor who said, “The client probably knows that you guys know more than him but you have no idea what he’s thinking. He might be scared out of his pants because this is probably the most responsibility he has ever had and the only way he knows how to cope is lash out. I’m not saying he’s right and, by all accounts, he’s unqualified for the job but you need to get it out of your head that you know exactly what he’s thinking without even trying see it from his point of view.”

I’m thankful for the talking-to because up until that point I had never even tried to see things from the client’s point of view. I’ve taken this lesson to heart and tried to apply throughout life. It doesn’t mean I’ll agree with everyone but trying to see something from someone’s point of view can help you understand why that person reacts a certain way.

Belonging

Finally, all of these life lessons I’ve just talked about are, I think, are the foundations of creating a community of belonging and, more importantly, a sense of self-belonging. At the risk of sounding like the self-help section at the bookstore, focus on building yourself.

Being accepted by others is always warm and welcoming. Being validated for who you are and what you do or have done is satisfying and is no less significant. But outside validation and acceptance is like candy: it's sweet, satisfying, but fleeting. After awhile you want more but the returns diminish and you become less healthy because of it.

I think it’s almost tragic when you see people just rolling through life never really figuring out what they want to do or who they really are. It isn’t selfish to think about what motivates you or how you feel about self-worth. These are healthy mechanisms to make sure you don’t get lost.

As we build ourselves from the inside out and understand who we are and what makes us act the way we do, I think we become better at understanding those around us. Look, I’m not saying you will belong everywhere nor should you only go places where you know you’ll be comfortable but if you aren’t able to reconcile yourself you’ll belong nowhere.

I think one of the reasons why we are so divided right now is many of us haven’t tried to reconcile who we are and what we need vs. what we think we want. We think we know the “other side” but don’t really know ourselves. This process of building yourself inside-out and becoming comfortable with who you are won’t happen overnight and it should be an ongoing process. Apologies for the platitude but it’s the journey not the destination.

We’re all not that different from each other. From the CEOs to celebrities to students, you all put on your pants one leg at a time, all get hungry, happy, and sad. If we can all acknowledge that then we can begin to create a greater sense of belonging.

Everything I’ve said tonight I’m still working on myself. I am a forever work-in-progress.

I’ll end my speech with a quote that really resonates with me: “Some people need tough love…some people need a lot of love.” Now go share a warm cookie with someone who might need it. Thank you.

East Side, West Side (1949) with Barbara Stanwyck and James Mason

If you look at imdb’s page for 1949’s East Side, West Side you’ll see some comments with almost diametrically opposed views. Many say it’s a bit of a rehash of all that’s come before when it comes to ‘women’s’ pictures. Other comment on the well developed plot, while others wring their hands with angst that the great cast wasn’t given better material. What most seem to agree on, however, is that the picture has an outstanding cast.

At its highest level, yes, the plot of East Side, West Side, had been done countless times even prior to 1949. But there’s so much here that to merely say it’s all old hat diminishes what’s an engaging and at times rather deep plot. At it’s core, there are more moving parts than we’ll have time for.

We’ve got Bran Bourne (James Mason) who is a serial philanderer who can’t seem to resist the urge to stray from his anxious but seemingly understanding wife Jessie (Barbara Stanwyck). That’s how we begin, with Bran skipping out early from he and his wife’s weekly dinner with her mother to attend a sudden business engagement. He ends up at a club, chatting up Rosa Senta (Cyd Charisse),a model, to great success until she learns that he’s married.

About the same time, an old mistress returns with a vengeance, clearly looking to get her claws back into the hapless cad Bran. This is Isabel (Ava Gardner), a gal who seems perhaps out only to gather as many men as she can. Even while talking to Bran, she introduces him to her current man, who (perhaps knowing about the couples torrid past) promptly decks Bran, knocking him out cold.

Luckily for Bran, Rosa’s still a decent sort, and takes him home until he comes to. Bran takes pains to explain the evening to Jessie, resulting in Jessie and Rosa becoming friends of a sort. Rosa in turn ultimately takes Jessie to meet her boyfriend Mark (Van Heflin) Mark’s a former highly decorated policeman who know works abroad in law enforcement. He immediately takes a liking to Jessie and then….

We’ll leave it at that, because it get’s very involved and busy and it’s too fun to spoil. We will say that we get a murder mystery, which is thankfully rather quickly resolved so as not to detract overly much from all the melodrama.

But if the four leads have you intrigued, there’s still more in the supporting cast. Gale Sondergaard has a few scenes as Jessie’s mother Nora. William Conrad is (unsurprisingly) head of the murder investigation and comes exactly as advertised, gruff voice and all. Nancy Davis is also here in her first credited role as Helen, a friend of Jessie’s who counsels her to leave Bran. Sadly, it’s only Ms. Davis’ performance (you may know her better as Nancy Reagan) which fails to excel and impress. Though presenting as a dear friend, Helen comes off more as a bit of a condescending shrew.

But the balance are exceptional and if anything, leave one wanting more.

Stanwyck’s perfect for the role as she’d played similar many times before. Strangely though she’s not her usual tough self in the start, as she’s curiously timidly accepting of Mason’s continual dalliances. It’s only later that her backbone appears and she draws the line in the sand with her wayward husband. You can almost feel her temptation to give in to Mark’s not to subtle advances, perhaps not just to get back at Bran, but more importantly because she likes him and the attention he gives her- constantly changing his plans to spend more time with her. The picture revolves around her, even when she’s not in the scene.

James Mason seems wonderfully cast as well, though some find him flat here. He’s snarky yet not sneaky, as he’s pretty open about where he is most of the time, full of explanations and leaving messages with odd phone numbers. You can tell he thinks this time will run the same course as the rest- let’s give a lengthy explanation along with a bit of begging and everything will work out just fine. He’s also got a wonderful nervous clenching with his hands, showing (depending on your perspective) either the stress of trying to resist the urge to cheat or the anxiety of yet another required explanation.

Although she gets a lot of attention for her role in this film (and rightfully so), Ava Gardner is only in a handful of scenes, definitely the fewest of the ‘big four’ here. Yet she does it vexingly so, exuding confidence which you can see; full of knowledge that if she so much as snaps her fingers, James Mason will come running. Her scene with Barbara Stanwyck is wonderful to watch from both perspectives. From Isabel/Gardner’s of playing her cards, letting the tension mount as she knows she has a winning hand. Stanwyck is her polar opposite, starting strong and defiant but subtly crumbling by the end.

Lastly, we have Van Heflin’s role as Mark, who hits a home run as the every-man of the picture. He let’s down his first girl easily without trampling her emotions and easily moves on to Jessie. Yet here again he presents his case and, when it’s politely brushed aside he continues to go about his business without too much drama. He’s even polite to Bran, at least mostly. Van Heflin’s often under rated, but he’s excellent here to the point where you can feel the chemistry between he and Jessie. By the same token, Jessie and Bran seem to have none whatsoever, though perhaps that’s the intentional result of Bran’s philandering.

Bringing this perfect casting stew together is director Mervyn LeRoy, who does a magical job keeping East Side, West Side on pace without getting into the many potential sub-plots which abound. Though some decry the lack of development and quick resolution of the murder, LeRoy (and the plot) realize that the murder isn’t the story, rather it’s the relationship between these characters.

There’s lots to enjoy visually as well- even besides the cast. East Side, West Side is full of just the opulence you’d expect. Every set (with most of the picture set in residential areas) is full of sitting rooms, deeply upholstered chairs, rich leather and the like. Plus, as usual, everyone is constantly smoking.

Like most excellent films, East Side, West Side leaves you wanting more from these characters. It’d be great to see what’s really driving Bran to wander, so much so that he compares it to being a drunk. Can Mark really walk away from it all?
