Doris Day (Calamity Jane, Pillow Talk, The Man Who Knew Too Much)— God. Maybe because I'm a butch lesbian and Calamity Jane was the first time I remember seeing a clearly masculine woman on screen, but I just grew up with an enormous crush on her. It's partially her gorgeous disney princess singing voice, coupled with her incredible sense of humor. I love funny women and she is so funny, she oscillates between grace, elegance, and glamour and almost cartoonish physical gags without missing a beat. She can do it all. Plus HER FACE! Her million watt smile! Her spunky body language and knockout legs!
Anouk Aimée (La Dolce Vita, Lola)—no propaganda submitted
This is round 1 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.

She was engaged in HIV/AIDS awareness and contributed financially to support programs as well as helping organise fundraising events

I think she has such a wholesome image that she'll lose immediately but I cannot rest if she's not at least represented! She's so pretty and charming and I love her singing.

It has come to my attention that it's Period Drama Appreciation Week 2023. I love period dramas and grew up watching them. They have been a formative part of my life and I'm now too disabled to watch video. Even gifs are too difficult for my brain to process. It is also Bi Visibility Week and I'm posting this on Bisexual Visibility Day. Since I can't safely post a pile of gifs, here is a list celebrating actors/characters/moments from period dramas that have been significant to my bisexuality. [Yes, this is a big list. I am missing out on watching and re-watching A Lot of awesome period dramas and I hate it. This list is helping me reclaim a bit of joy. Also I've probably forgotten some favourites and may update this.]

Daffodils
Secret Flowers, Part 3
The daffodils had arrived, and in Dean’s head Doris Day was Calamity Jane, singing to them.
Now, I'll shout it from the highest hill,
Even told the golden daffodil…
He had come across the movie one rainy motel afternoon, when Dad, for a change, wasn't on a hunt but had instead taken himself off to the nearest bar in the face of Sammy's whining.
“Dean! I wanna go to the playground!” For the eightieth time.
“Please, Sammy, just shut up and watch the damn cartoons.”
“You shouldn’t say bad words! And I don't wanna watch stupid cartoons!”
“Fine.” Dean lurched up from the bed and stabbed the stiff button on the old TV. Remote? Yeah, right. This thing probably had a dinosaur inside, like a Flintstone TV.
News, more news, a soap with subtitles, more shitty cartoons, cowboys. Cowboys? And cowgirls. Cool.
He flopped back on the bed and shot his brother a sidelong glare, daring him to protest. But Sammy was already hooked and he didn’t kick off even when the singing started up.
Dean was hooked too. Doris Day was cute, especially in her old buckskins, cracking a bullwhip and shooting a rifle or a six-gun with equal skill. The guys were cool as well, of course. At the time, Dean couldn’t decide whether he preferred Bill Hickock or the Lieutenant, but thought the Lieutenant's uniform gave him an edge, for some reason.
It was an awesome movie, even if it did end with a double wedding (yuk) and Dean didn’t see why Calam’ shouldn't have a pistol tucked into her wedding gown, or even why she had to wear a stupid gown at all when she looked much more like herself in her buckskins.
Anyway, now swathes of daffodils surrounded Sunrise like a golden moat, but Dean wasn't singing to them about his secret love, sadly. Instead, he crouched on the ground, holding one of the flowers so he could look down its bright yellow trumpet, and told it all his troubles - his troubles, which he couldn’t tell to his not-so-secret love, because they were about his love and Cas's stupid idea that he needed to fly a different plane which they had at an airfield somewhere up in Nebraska.
“He even tried to tell me all about the stupid airplane. Why would I want to know that? Why does he need a different plane anyway? More powerful, he says, as if that's gonna fill me with confidence. And do I want to go too? Like hell! And hang around, waiting to see him loop-the-loop over my head? Son of a bitch!”

what are the fics you’d consider required reading (as you said in the tags of another post) ? any fandom i’d say for required reading or if there’s too much, for warrior nun ?
*heavy sigh* I had this post 90% complete when the power went out at my house and I had to rewrite the whole thing.
I'm gonna give you a scattershot approach, one fic for a few different fandoms, different types of fic, and hopefully something resonates.
🦗 (Recommend any fic, wild card!)
Avengers/MCU - The Infinite Coffee and Protection Detail series by owlet (tumblr?)
Set immediately at the end of CA:TWS, Bucky's scrambled brain does a hard reset and decides his new mission is to protect Steve, covertly. Meanwhile, he kinda gets adopted by the senior citizens that live in the shitty apartment building he's crashing in while he learns how to be person again. It's snarky AF, touching, funny, great action, fluffy domestic Avengers Tower stuff. There's some Stucky eventually, but it's not the primary focus and doesn't really show up until like the 5th story in the series. There are 7 stories, and a Q&A with the author.
OUaT - The Secret's in the Telling by @the-pyrophoric-one
Emma is being pranked by a thief while living in the mansion with Regina and Henry, and there's also magic fuckery afoot. This story is just neat. It's tightly-plotted and funny. I can't actually say too much because the whole point is that there's a mystery to solve and I'd hate to spoil it. Even when I had kinda figured out what was going on, I still had no idea how it would end. It's told from two different POVs, so it's fun to reread the first part once you know the ending. Apparently there's also a sequel, but I don't believe I've read it yet.
R&I - Calamity Jane Meets Dr. Isles, Medicine Woman by @jobethdalloway
Rizzles 1800s western AU. Maura is a fancy lady from Boston who moves west to live with her fiancé Garrett Fairfield, Jane wears pants, drinks whiskey, and roams the countryside as Jake Wyatt, an outlaw who's hunting for Charles Hoyt, the man who killed her parents. The immersion in this AU is stunning, the characters feel true to the originals while allowing for how things would change given the time and circumstances, and the buildup from their unconventional meeting to friends to more is a lovely and authentic slow burn. There's also a completed sequel, but it's still on my to-read list.
The 100 - Lightning Only Strikes Once by fiona_249 (tumblr?)
Lexa gets shot and dies, Clarke climbs to the roof of the building, gets hit by weird lightning, then suddenly she's back on The Ark, about to be sent down to Earth with 99 other teen prisoners, and no one remembers the events of the past year besides her. The ultimate fix-it fic. How do you fix your mistakes while still trying to keep the good things that happened? Balancing future knowledge with ripple effects, how much can you change before you don't know what's going to happen anymore? What do you do with a second chance? I think I've read this fic at least half a dozen times.
Warrior Nun - What If I Told You I'm a Mastermind? by @sapphicstacks
Avatrice actress AU. Ava is an unknown actress working as a bartender, Bea is a famous but reclusive actress making a comeback after several years away from the spotlight, and they get cast together in a sapphic love story. You ever read a story and go "JFC, will you two just talk to each other?" Yeah, the reason is because all of the healthy communication got requisitioned for this fic. It's incredibly wholesome and overwhelmingly romantic and also ridiculously hot. Like, prep a cold shower or make sure you're somewhere private when you read it. There's a regularly-updated WiP sequel.

A Film A Year
Tumblr media
Going through an old hard drive today I found this almost-completed list from 2015 in which I'd set myself the task of choosing a single film for each year of the preceding hundred. It was interesting to see in what ways my tastes had changed and just how many more films I'd discovered and fallen in love with in the meantime.
Anyways, I thought I'd finish it off and update it to the present: I very much tried to keep it to just one film per year, but the competition some years was just too high so they've had to share joint first places:

Ok so no one asked but I was thinking about musicals and what I’ve been able to see over the years so I made a list. So this has taken over thirty years and most organised by other people and pretty much always in the cheap seats which are never actually that cheap anyway. I do live close enough to a big city and some big local theatres too so I’m a lucky spot and there’s more than I expected. Under the cut for anyone whose vaguely interested.
Professional Productions
Joseph and his amazing technical raincoat when I was ten - first musical I listened to the cassette (I know!!what’s that?) over and over for years I know pretty much every word
Les Miserables good songs - but like it says miserable
The Lion King it’s was ok but too much like the film to be exciting (sorry)
Frozen missed the first 20 minutes cos got the time wrong - the sets and the dress change are magnificent! Not too much like the film
Hairspray one of my favourites
Waitress had no idea what it was about but I loved it
Hamilton the most expensive tickets I’ve ever bought - took my daughter and her friend because they were obsessed
Chicago (on Broadway for 30th birthday trip)
Blood Brothers made me jump at end and then cry
The King and I with Trixi from call the midwife- amazing production. Cried again
9-5 in the underground theatre of the Savoy which was cool
Bugsy Malone a favourite film from my childhood took my kids
Bombay Dreams had to Google the name cos I’d forgotten seen in early 2000s but it was fantastic
The Rocky Horror Picture Show -dressed up for it when I was at uni very fun. Some people left at intermission not sure what they we’re expecting!
Anything goes or possibly Crazy for you- no memory of it really
Miss Saigon seen it twice, once from ‘the gods’ and couldn’t really see anything.
Guys and Dolls- had Ewan MacGregor in it which is why I went
Wicked reasonably good seats for this one excellent
Local amateur productions
Hairspray
Calamity Jane
Shrek - the strangest thing I’ve ever seen
Oklahoma
Little Shop Of Horrors
Singin in the rain was great and it rained on stage in my local theatre
West side story more than once
Local School Productions
The sound of music
West side story
My fair lady
Grease
Wizard of Oz
And finally Would Like to see
Six
Moulin Rouge booked for sept

Day 31 - Santa Catalina to Foncebadon
Today was just over 10 miles without backpacks.
It ended up as just me and Jane in the dorm last night, very unusual but we weren’t complaining. We woke at 7 and were on the road by half past. The morning light on the street and our albergue was lovely.
Tumblr media
It was cold walking. The temperature has fallen and we’re climbing higher. At one point a week or so ago I was thinking of getting rid of my sleeping bag as I was too hot at night but now I’m glad I didn’t.
We could see on the map that there was a village about 4K away which indicated that it had cafes or albergues so we thought we’d have breakfast there. As we approached we could see tepees where pilgrims could stay. Unfortunately when we got there nothing was open! Calamity! How would Jane manage without her coffee?
Tumblr media
There was nothing for it but to carry on, which we did until we found a picnic spot and dredged up the last of the slightly stale small pain au chocolats we had left over from the Airbnb and downed them with water.
The landscape has changed completely, we can see the mountains in the near distance and our path is flanked by some amazing colours and smells. We have lavender bushes, white broom, yellow gorse and lots of different coloured heathers, and even a few bluebells. The pine forest scent has been wonderful. As always we’ve been followed by the noise of cuckoos.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As we walked towards Rabanal we came across a long fence into which people had woven wooden crosses.
Tumblr media
Finally reaching Rabanal after 7 miles we had an extended coffee stop with tostada. In fact we had two coffees just to make up for earlier disappointment.
In the compound of the place we stopped were donkeys and across the road a field of long-horned cows. Rabanal village itself was very pretty with one main street winding upwards. We stopped briefly to have a look inside the church with its ornate altar piece.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We then had 3-4 miles climbing steadily upwards. It was a lovely walk, mainly away from the roads. But the path was stony so Jane had to take extra care where she placed her feet.
Tumblr media
We thought we had left the Cymru Am Byth vandals behind but it seems that their pen having run out they bought a can of spray paint and it looks even worse than their black pen did.
Tumblr media
It wasn’t long before we reached Foncebadon, our stop for the night. The hostel is full this time, and modern inside. We did try to get two bottom bunks but weren’t allowed, so this time I’m on the top bunk. It’s a mixed room of 6 with a very swish en-suite. The only problem is that the walls are not very thick so you can hear everything and also the noise from other bathrooms. Oh well, earplugs will be in use tonight.
They did a set pilgrims’ menu so we had that for lunch. We both though the pudding was the best, it was like a deconstructed cheesecake.
It’s very windy outside so I had a shower, washed my smalls and got them and my towel on the line while Jane had a chill.
After a few hours a coffee and some delicious home made orange sponge cake was in order while we had a chat about tomorrow and what we would do when we finished in Santiago.
Tomorrow we’ll be climbing a little bit higher to the Cruz de Ferro, the cross at the highest point on the Camino. The next part down to Molinaseca will be a bit more tricky as it’s a steep scree path over 7 miles long and about 900m descent in total. We’ve both got walking poles to help us and if it gets too much for Jane then there’s a village halfway down that you can get a taxi from. However, in the past we’ve been given scare stories on previous parts of the Camino and they have all been absolutely fine. I keep telling Jane it’s like coming down Machen Mountain 3 times, we’ll be fine!

Sometimes our childhood favorites really are that good.
Script below the break
Hello and welcome back to The Rewatch Rewind! My name is Jane, and this is the podcast where I count down my top 40 most rewatched movies in a 20-year period. Today I will be talking about number 25 on my list: Disney’s 1994 animated musical The Lion King, directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff, written by Irene Mecchi, Jonathan Roberts, and Linda Woolverton, featuring the voice talents of Matthew Broderick, Jeremy Irons, and James Earl Jones.
Desperate for power, Scar (voiced by Jeremy Irons) murders his brother, King Mufasa (voiced by James Earl Jones), then blames and exiles his nephew Simba (voiced by Jonathan Taylor Thomas as a cub and by Matthew Broderick as an adult). Simba grows up in the wilderness with the help of a meerkat named Timon (voiced by Nathan Lane) and a warthog named Pumbaa (voiced by Ernie Sabella), whose motto is “Hakuna Matata” or “no worries.” But after Scar and his hyena henchmen destroy the pridelands, royal advisor mandrill Rafiki (Robert Guillaume), Simba’s childhood friend and adulthood lover Nala (voiced by Niketa Calame and Moira Kelly), and the ghost of Mufasa all remind Simba that he actually does have some worries, and convince him to return home to challenge his uncle.
Apparently the first movie I ever saw in a theater was a re-release of Pinocchio, but the first movie I actually remember seeing in a theater is The Lion King. My aunt took me to see it first, and while I don’t have many specific memories of that experience (I was four), I do remember being overwhelmed with awe. I loved the characters, I loved the gorgeous animation, I loved the music, I loved the intense emotions – everything about it spoke to me. Later that year, I visited Disneyland for the first time, and the main things I remember from that trip are watching a Lion King themed parade and visiting a gift shop at the end of the day to get a Simba stuffed animal, which I still have. After we got back home, my mom took my sister and me to see the movie at a second-run theater, and I was very excited to be able to bring my Simba to see it with me. My sister also brought a stuffed animal of her own. I have a very distinct memory of being in the bathroom of that particular theater after watching this movie and saying, “Simba was very brave,” and when my sister commented that her stuffed animal was brave too, I said, “No, I mean in the MOVIE!” Why that has stuck with me for almost three decades I have no idea, but that exchange is indicative of how much I wanted to talk about this movie for my entire childhood.
As I mentioned in the Sound of Music episode, to my friend Christina’s shock, despite growing up in the 90s, I did not have a VCR until I was about 10 or 11 years old, which was around when most people started replacing their VCRs with DVD players. But my grandparents, who lived about a thousand miles away, had one, so I got to watch videos whenever we went to visit them, which was usually for several weeks once or twice a year. My grandma is not much of a movie person, and she only very rarely watches something more than once, so she has always been baffled and slightly amused by my penchant for rewatching. Before The Lion King, my favorite thing to watch over and over at their house was a video of four old cartoon shorts, two of which featured Humpty Dumpty, but after The Lion King was available for home viewing, that was what I wanted to watch the most. Whenever I put it on, my grandma would teasingly inquire, “How many times have you watched it now, Jane?” and for a while I could answer precisely, but I lost track somewhere around 10, 11, or 12 views, and that’s part of what eventually led me to start keeping track of my movie watching in 2003. So if this podcast was based on total rewatches throughout my life, The Lion King would be much higher in this ranking.
Eventually we did get a VCR and a DVD player, and we got a special edition DVD of The Lion King around 2004. We also got The Lion King 1 ½, which I very much enjoyed for a time, but haven’t revisited since 2005. I remember watching The Lion King II a few times, but apparently they were all before 2003, so I don’t remember much about it. But as far as the original Lion King, since keeping track, I saw it three times in 2003, twice each in 2004, 2005, and 2006, once each in 2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2017, 2018, and 2019, twice in 2020, and once in 2022. When my brother and I watched through all the theatrically released animated Disney films and ranked them in 2020, we knew we would be biased toward our childhood favorites, but I think we were both unprepared for just how clear it would be why the Disney Renaissance is so named. The striking, exponential increase in quality over the films immediately preceding this era cannot be overstated. But while the early Renaissance masterpieces The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast are incredible, we noticed that some of the animation sequences left something to be desired. Aladdin was much improved in that sense, with some breath-taking scenes – seriously, re-watch Aladdin’s attempted escape from the collapsing Cave of Wonders. And then The Lion King. Nearly 30 years after it came out, The Lion King is still one of the most gorgeous movies I’ve ever seen. I knew going into that project that it would probably end up pretty high on the list, but even I was kind of shocked to find that, at least based on the specific criteria we were looking at, there was no contest. The Lion King was number one. We definitely had differences of opinion throughout the project, but on that we were in complete agreement.
One thing that I particularly noticed while we were doing that project is that The Lion King’s voice cast was one of if not the most racially diverse of all animated Disney movies up to that point, which shows just how incredibly low the bar was, since most of the main cast is white. Robert Guillaume was put in a similar position as Samuel E. Wright in The Little Mermaid in having to adopt a rather stereotypical accent, but despite that, his is an excellent performance. The main hyenas were at one point going to be voiced by Cheech and Chong, and Cheech does voice one of them, but Chong had to drop out and was ultimately replaced by Whoopi Goldberg, which worked perfectly because hyenas are matriarchal, and because there really needed to be more female characters in this movie. Sarabi, Simba’s mother, was voiced by Madge Sinclair, in her final feature film, and definitely deserved a bigger role. Nala is really the only other female character who is at all important, and for some reason while young Nala is voiced by black actress Niketa Calame, adult Nala is voiced by white actress Moira Kelly. Not that she does a bad job or anything, I just don’t understand why they couldn’t have cast another black actress. But at least they cast James Earl Jones as Mufasa. His voice and acting were so perfect that he played Mufasa again in the 2019 remake – which, despite having an iconic and much less white cast, I will never voluntarily watch because the few clips I’ve seen look like they were made by a group of internet trolls as a bad joke, but I digress. All of the voice acting in this movie is fabulous, but James Earl Jones’s performance is unquestionably in the top two, along with Jeremy Irons’s portrayal of Scar.
I absolutely love Disney villains, and Scar has always been one of my favorites. I remember once when I was fairly young trying to articulate to my parents how much it delighted me that when he tells Simba that Mufasa’s death is Simba’s fault, his exact wording of “If it weren’t for you, he’d still be alive” was technically true on multiple levels, because not only did Mufasa die trying to rescue Simba, but it was also Simba’s birth that made Scar desperate to kill both of them, since before Simba was born he was first in line for the throne. But Scar was neglecting to mention that he was the one who had arranged the stampede. And I thought that was SO CLEVER and it blew my child mind. In more recent years, it has occurred to me that part of why I’m so drawn to villains is because they rarely have romantic partners. Sometimes that’s because of the painful stereotype that the hero wins romance and the villain is punished with singleness, but often the villain shows no interest in romance, and that is the case with Scar – or at least, the version of him that ended up in the movie. At one point he was going to hit on Nala and prompt her to leave the Pridelands, which is a storyline that was added back in for the Broadway musical. I appreciate that the creators of the musical wanted to expand the female characters, but I feel like there were better ways of doing that than showing Nala being sexually harassed. Anyway, movie Scar, like many if not most animated Disney villains, is very queer-coded and could potentially be aroace, and even though he is very evil, I’ll take any representation I can get. The way his ultimate downfall is that he betrayed his friends emphasizes the importance of maintaining trust in non-romantic relationships at a level that most stories wouldn’t dare approach.
Speaking of queerness, Timon and Pumbaa are the closest a Disney animated feature has come to showing a gay couple raising a child together. Personally I like to think of their partnership as a QPR, or queer-platonic relationship, which is a committed intimate relationship that is not romantic but is also different from a friendship, but that is entirely the aromantic in me projecting. To anyone out there who reads them as being in romantic love, that is a 100% valid interpretation. As is the interpretation that they’re friends. Their relationship is ambiguous, and I kind of love that. I wish that the movie hadn’t forced Simba and Nala into a friends-to-lovers path. Their friendship as kids makes me so happy, and their romance as adults has always confused me. For a long time I assumed that it was normal to eventually fall in love with a friend of the opposite sex, and that there was something wrong with me for not doing that. But it got to the point where now I’m just annoyed at that part. Not that Can You Feel the Love Tonight? isn’t an excellent song – it is! I just…don’t really think it belongs in this movie. And I get that they wanted the story to end as it began with a baby lion to emphasize the Circle of Life theme, but still. It would have been nice to have ONE Disney Renaissance film that wasn’t steeped in romance (besides The Rescuers Down Under, which doesn’t really count).
So yeah, there are things about this movie I don’t love, but they are so overshadowed by the aspects I do love that I don’t usually dwell on them. Even after all these rewatches, there are still scenes that give me chills. That opening, when the sun and Lebo M’s voice break through at the exact same moment, and all the animals are heading to Pride Rock through the fog and the intro to Circle of Life – ugh, it’s so beautiful! And the wildebeest stampede! Apparently it took over two years just to animate that two-and-a-half-minute stampede scene, using and innovating new computer programs and systems, and man, did that work pay off! As with the opening, the score and choir greatly enhance the stampede scene as well. Even if I didn’t love the story and the characters – which I do – the gorgeous animation and music would be enough to convince me to keep rewatching this movie. Which is particularly interesting given that most of Disney’s top animators at the time, along with Disney Renaissance music superstar Alan Menken, were working on Pocahontas instead because the studio wasn’t really taking this lion movie seriously. So the visuals were created by relatively inexperienced animators, and the score was by Hans Zimmer, who had never worked on an animated film before. The story itself went through a staggering number of concept changes and rewrites. Three people are officially credited as screenwriters, but then there are 17 people credited with contributing to the story, an additional eight people credited under “additional story material,” plus a story supervisor. At one point it was going to be a story about lions vs baboons, and the original title was King of the Jungle before somebody realized that lions don’t actually live in the jungle. Eventually the pitch became “Bambi in Africa meets Hamlet” and everyone just ran with that. Somehow, seemingly by accident, exactly the right people with exactly the right talent and dedication managed to create a masterpiece out of what by all logic should have been a disaster, and learning all of this over the years has made me appreciate it even more.
The Lion King is also full of difficult lessons that I still find relevant as an adult. Hakuna Matata is a good motto to apply to things you truly have no control over, but should never be used as an excuse not to work on problems you can do something about. Often it’s hard to tell which is which, and that’s why we all need friends and mentors like Nala and Rafiki to help. This movie also provides a deep and profound portrayal of grief through the eyes of a child, and how it stays with him through adulthood. Many other Disney protagonists have deceased or absent parents, but there’s no other moment in the Disney canon anywhere near as devastating as Mufasa’s death. It’s not exactly the same situation, but my aunt who first took me to see this movie died of cancer when I was 11. That was the first real loss of my life, and I think the fact that I will always associate The Lion King with her has significantly deepened my appreciation for this movie. My first viewing in 2020, before my brother and I embarked on our Disney project, was in honor of the 18th anniversary of her death, and I sobbed through most of the movie. It was very cathartic. I know that The Lion King is widely beloved and acclaimed – it’s the highest grossing 2D animated film of all time, it won two Oscars, it has 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, and it’s currently ranked #37 on IMDb’s top 250 movies – but it still feels incredibly personal to me. It was the first movie that I ever fell truly, deeply in love with, so it will always be one of my favorites.
Thank you for listening to me discuss another of my most frequently rewatched movies. Stay tuned for next week, when I will be talking about another Disney film that I’ve seen 19 times. As always, I will leave you with a quote from that next movie: “Darling. Could you, like, chill for a sec?”

Maya Schrödinger?
OH BOY, A COMBO BREAKER
Sexuality headcanon: I wish I knew how to do funky colored text because I would put this in lesbian flag colors.
Gender headcanon: Cis woman? But with her ability to cosplay take on abilities of book characters, possibly a little genderfluid?
A ship I have with her: Virginia Virginia Virginia!!!! Gotta love a good rivalry ship, as if no one could tell by the previous meme reply. >.>
BrOTP I have with her: Is not the Schoedinger Family not already the greatest BrOTP in the game? XD It even has a boss-ass theme song!
A NOTP I have with her: I don't really have NOTPs in general, so nah, not really.
A random headcanon: I can't help but wonder if her ability to copy book characters doesn't mess with her head a little bit. Like, it's gotta take effort to pull yourself back to reality, right? Plus being not!Calamity Jane would rule, I too would probably spend a little too much time in that form too.
General opinion of her: Look, I already fucking love "Calamity" Jane Maxwell; Maya has excellent taste in who to copy. Also oh my god the mage girl form might actually top the Calamity Jane form in my heart, I absolutely cannot resist a cute witch like EVER. ;A;
Plus, minus the book copy stuff, she's got surprising depth to her, and also who can not love a good cartoony gag of hiding a machine gun in her skirt? A+++ character, do not change anything.

I gave myself a challenge to make self inserts based on obscure media so I picked two action shows: Calamity Jane and Gen13! Left is Vintage Western right is Candypeps
My SI for Calamity Jane would be the daughter of former slaves. Her name is June. While not a fighter, she is quite handy with a gun and bayonet. Personality wise she is outgoing and bubbly and always lends a hand however she tends to be way too in the clouds at times. As well as crushing on every guy she meets even after they end up being the episode's villain XD
My other SI for gen13 is an older "gen active" named Crystal Kingston. She works assisting John Lynch. That's her costume (or the closest the maker had) & due to her powers being crystal themed she has the color scheme to match. Also she has a pet tiger she rescued from animal traffickers. She's Matthew's love interest since he was bout like, the ONLY character i could really tolerate plus he's pretty hot for a goofass supervillain & he's voiced by Luke Skywalker soooo. While Crystal is pretty eccentric and friendly she's also haunted by her past, and she can be stubborn and competitive.
Both made in doll divine Vintage Western via @ummmmandy
Candy Peps by meiker (art style Sara Kuan)

Good morning. Can I ask some dating headcanons for Calamity Jane from fate?
Warnings: None!
Jane loves to have a good time and is pretty go with the flow. She goes where adventure is and loves a good chase. She doesn’t expect you to follow her all over but appreciates when you do decide to come with. The two of you will go all kinds of adventures; climbing volcanoes, exploring ruins. If you’d prefer to wait to home that’s ok too, she’ll make sure to bring you something fun!
She does get lost a lot and would love it if you had a good sense of direction. It never bothers Jane that she gets lost but it is fun to let you play the hero. It’s cute, watching you take the lead and ‘save her’, even though she’s the muscle in your relationship. And if you have a horrible sense of direction? No worries! There’s no one she’d rather take a trip with than you. Jane has no issue being lost when it’s with you.
Jane isn’t someone who gets jealous easily and she doesn’t expect you too either. She trusts you completely and even if there are people who are interested in you, she knows that you’re not going to go anywhere. She does think it’s cute if you get a little jealous but it’s a double-edged sword. Jane doesn’t always notice when you’re getting jealous and it can lead to arguments if you think she’s doing it on purpose. Make sure to be upfront about your feelings and Jane will be too.
It can be hard to tell what Jane is thinking; her poker face is smiles and laughter after all. It gets easier to read her as time goes on, especially if you’re looking for it. Her smiles become tighter and her laughter not as long. Jane will only want to talk if it’s just the two of you in private and she’s happy you noticed. Even if it takes a while, she likes that you know her well enough to tell. It makes her feel better and talking with you will help even more.

"The Homesman" review - SPOILERS
I think Tommy Lee Jones said, in one of "The Homesman" panels at a film festival, that this movie is better appreciated with multiple viewings
And I have to agree with it.
For me is the journey of Mary Bee Cuddy and her final choice. The first time I saw the movie; I was kinda mad and turn off by it. Why would she decide to do that? She was a woman ahead of her time, strong and capable, independent with strong morals, assertive and empathetic. Why? But, in a way, that's really the question of the movie, how much does it take for you to break?
This is a hard movie to watch at times, but I think that is the first (correct me if I’m wrong) that actually focus on how women were treated in the Nebraska, 1854.
Usually when we think of Women in Westerns, the idea that pops to my mind is "little house on the prairie" or "Calamity Jane". I have a feeling that what happened to these 3 women and Mary Bee are closer to the reality of what women went through during those days, especially in the hard conditions they lived in.
For that alone, this is a movie I would recommend watching (just keep in mind that the movie doesn't shy away to show the harsh conditions these women lived in and the impact on their mental health)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The movie is call “The Homesman” and Tommy Lee Jones is first billed, making him, at first, the main character of the movie, even if he just shows up at the end of the first act and closes it before the ending credits, but this is really the journey of Mary Bee and her battle with the cards that life gave her to deal with.
When we first see Mary Bee, she's an independent, self sustained woman, with strong morals. Through the movie, we see that she's also has empathy, she cares for these women, in the way their madness brought her to tears, the way she baths them, and (one of my favorite moments) the way she tries to connect and understand Grace Gummer's character.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But behind the strong personality and morals, and the caring person, there is also a very lonely person that craves to be loved.
And we can see from early on the affect the conditions these pioneers lived also had on this strong woman. With all her independence, and strong will, Mary Bee longs for love and companionship, she feel alone and misses her old life in a more civilized society.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are a few scenes during the movie that hint at this, starting at the very beginning during the dinner with Giffen, when she proposes to him (unthinkable in 1800s), not because she loved him, but because it would make sense to join their properties and to have a companion. Something we see her doing again later with Briggs.
More than once we witness Mary Bee needs for having a companion, to be loved, and being denied again and again.
Tumblr media
First by man, my reasoning here is they felt threatened by a woman that not only could walk shoulder by shoulder, but even walk ahead of them. A woman they would not have any control over, particularly when we look at the other 3 women married life. And, in a lesser degree, a woman, that’s over 30 years old, was probably considered too old, during that time.
And second by God. When she stays behind to repair a child grave and praying for them, she feverish asks to be loved, in a moment, right before where, I think, things start too shattered for her. After her prayer, she has probably the worse hours of her life, the despair and the humiliation of having to be on her knees sharing dry grass with her horse next to her, feeling betrayal by her travel companion.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We also gets a glimpse how the hard living is affecting her and the cracks on the strong persona. The fake music playing for Giffen, her words both to the reverent and the man that builds the carriage for the journey.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, many viewers seem to see the reason for her choice and the trigger that leads her to it is the scene that happens during the previews night, myself included after my first viewing. And it bothered me, because I didn’t felt it was in character.
But on second viewing, I realize that her decision was made even before that night (in fact, I think that what happens is because she already made her choice and wanted to know/experience that connection before she end it all), and, to me, she sealed her fate  by the river when she again search comfort in music.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like those 3 woman, Mary Bee was also affected by the harsh conditions, from the beginning of the movie, there were already cracks in her strong personality, and seeing what these woman have become, the events of when she’s lost, and others along the journey, including the fate of her horse, her losing faith that she would ever find a companion to walk next to her in life, the lack of music, all add up to her breaking point.
There must be also a symbolism in the fact that when she’s completely shattered, she finds refuge in the same coach they use to secure the 3 woman that were already broken to the point of madness.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is a movie about women, mental health, and how much can one take before they break?
The acting is superb all around, there are 5 movies that I think Hilary should have got a academy nod, 2 she got her Oscar, “Conviction” was another that I think she should have got at least a nod, the 4th one is this movie. Her performance really solidifies the movie.
This is not a movie that will drive the viewer to watch it multiple times, and the fact that the point of view is very women centered will push away some of the male audience, but, like Tommy Lee Jones said, it really gets a bigger appreciation with subsequent views.

Not boring in the slightest I would love to hear more about your book collection!! What are some of your favourites from each genre? 🖤
Hello! First of all, that's so sweet of you to say, thanks a lot! 💜 Going from top to bottom, my favourites
— From the "Medieval"/gothic collection (that i haven't read that much of yet tbh):
· "Ivanhoe" by Sir Walter Scott. It's very witty at times + I got some nice vocabulary and cultural references from the medieval setting out of it.
· "The Castle of Otranto" by Horace Walpole. Liked it mostly for making me re-think the whole morale of the "Maleficent" films (they're the only thing I talk about ever, sorry for somehow bringing it even here). I mean the whole underlying idea that descendants should pay for their ancestors' wrongs if they themselves escaped punishment. Realising that for many medieval people that kind of retribution might've been considered just and right put lot of things in an interesting perspective for me!
· "Fair Margaret" by Sir Henry Rider Haggard. I'm reading it rn and enjoying the characters and the plot so far, although I sometimes wish the author wouldn't just tell what the characters are like since I can already tell it from their speech and actions, hah.
· I also have a book of Celtic myths which I also enjoy a lot despite never remembering a single plot or name.
— From foreign classics:
· "The Phantom of the Opera" by Gaston Leroux. It was the first book I really enjoyed after a long period of not being able to bring myself to read, so it's special to me + I really liked the Persian, it's insane that he's not in the musical??
· "Jane Eyre" by Charlotte Brontё. My #1 baby my favourite lady. I've read it a few times and every time I hate Mr Rochester more and love Jane more as well.
— From foreign modern/contemporary literature:
· "Flush" by Virginia Woolf. It's the only work of hers I've read so far, but I remember being in awe of just how colourful and almost tasty the descriptions are. And it's a very touching tale as well.
· "Martin Eden" by Jack London. *in keke palmer's voice* sorry to this man
· "Special Topics in Calamity Physics" by Marisha Pessl. A really well-done novel provided the author's intent was to make me absolutely fucking despise the main characters from the very first page. I think it was, so kudos to her.
— From Russian literature:
· "Oblomov" by Ivan Alexandrovich Goncharov. Somehow is in Russian school curriculum and still underrated. I guess people dislike the main character too much to enjoy it; not me, though! I only hate Ilya Oblomov because he reminds me of myself too fucking much and this whole novel is dragging me and putting me in existential dread!
· Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov's poetry of which I have three books. I am a Lermontov girlie it's true it's true. I think he is quite underrated internationally (that is to say, I wish he was as well-known in the world as Tolstoy or Dostoyevskiy). He is romantism at its finest.
— From Circassian literature (that I also hardly read anything from because most of what I have is in Circassian and I'm not nearly as fluent):
· "The Millstones" by Isaac Mashbash. A historical novel about the time preceeding the Russo-Circassian war and the wartime itself. It was a difficult yet interesting read. I'm thinking of maybe re-reading it soon because it seems only fitting, considering what's happening right now has a lot of resemblance to what happens in the novel.
I think that's it! Sorry if it's too long! Again, thanks for asking!

Well now I gotta ask further. Since Tank still gets some weekends and Holidays with his first child, do you have any headcannons for his first kid, alongside how are they with Charlotte and Lucas?? How are they with you yourself??
It’s complicated, as this child was from his old universe. But for the headcanons about his first child? It’s going to sting a lot
TW: Relationship issues, infidelity, losing family, depression
Emma Dempsey: The First Born
Her parents aren’t married. They were supposed to be out of wedlock since their short-term relationship had happened in the barracks. Her name was Jane Eisenhower, nicknamed Calamity Jane. She was the entertainer turned barracks bunny that had a fun relationship with Dempsey until they found out they were having a kid by surprise.
Tank really made an effort, and so did Jane. The first three years were mostly smooth sailing. It wasn’t until Tank realized Jane wasn’t home as often, leaving the baby to be watched at his mother’s house. What the hell?! Turns out after many cold shoulder arguments and rocky issues in their relationship, she had been cheating on him. Tank got very depressed over it and fought to take Emma with him to protect her from Jane’s irresponsibility. Unfortunately, the damn US court system is beyond corrupt. He lived separately but would get to see her on every alternate weekend and some select holidays like Easter and 4th of July. His spiteful fling of an ex-girlfriend made sure he only had Christmas eve and never the day of.
Emma was a happy girl. She had a big imagination and loved to read, draw and spend time with her father and orange tabby named Rocket. Tank encouraged his little girl to always be adventurous and to take on the world with courage. She adored the Walt Disney cartoons and always carried a Minnie Mouse around. Emma’s favorite movie was Bambi. Seeing those private cartoons Disney made in the 40s for the military men was bittersweet for Tank. Surely he’d come home to his sweet pea, right?
Unfortunately, after being captured by Group 935, the memory loss made him forget a lot of repressed trauma. It’s why he might act out without knowing why. He puts a lot of blame to Richtofen and his grand scheme being why he’s so upset. But truthfully, it’s more than that. Nobody knows what happened to the rest of the world during the apocalypse. I would’ve helped rescue Emma if I knew about her. Without our knowledge, she grows up to be apart of a tenacious zombie-fighting clan. In another world, she’s a seamstress/fashion designer for a big name company. She is very successful but doesn’t want to talk about her father at all.
What if she could meet Lucas and Charlotte somehow?
It would feel a bit weird seeing who’s essentially half-siblings at first. But Charlotte would be ultimately more outgoing and help bond with her! Emma looks up to her a lot because of her energetic, go-getter attitude towards everything (just like Papa Dempsey!) They would often draw together a lot and play with dolls. However, Emma would have to get used to how Charlotte plays with her barbies. It isn’t simple stuff like playing house, no no. Charlotte turns into barbie kung fu storylines and she also has a toy tank+GI Joes per her father’s idea. I do appreciate that he agrees there’s no restriction in playing with whatever toy you want! But Emma half the time will banter about it
Emma🐣: YOU CAN’T DO THAT! BARBIE DOESN’T DRIVE A TANK
Charlotte🍭: YES SHE DOES! SEE? ITS GREEN AND HAS STICKERS ALL OVER IT (They’re butterfly stickers)
🐣: But-but she’s supposed to bake a cake for Ken…
🍭: No she’s not!
🐣: Is too!
🍭: Is not! “Hey Ken! Girl power!” “AAAAAAAAAAA!!” *blows raspberry as she runs over the Ken doll with the toy Tiger Tank*
And the two start laughing so hard, it causes commotion
As for Lucas? We have to remind them to not forget him. But he has a lot of fun too! He is more likely to encourage his sisters to play outside with him. They will usually have bubble wands, RC Cars for racing, jump ropes and Tank bought one of these inflatable wheels. Lucas is a bit more level-headed compared to Charlotte, so he’s more likely to stop the other two from acting as chaotic catalysts for disaster. Charlotte may get mad at him for being a “tattletale.” Emma always appreciates his kindness, as he’s the one more likely to share something with her and the first to notice when she needs cheering up.

Still haven't been able to play Auld Lang Syne due to work, but it sounds like I have to prep myself to deal with a very emotional last part for Bustafellows. Technically, Full Circle landed on a cliffhanger, so I guess that makes sense. In the meantime tho, I'm replaying routes again because I'm a sucker and I like everyone's routes so much. Playing blind, I got Crow first, but I've replayed Shu's route the most tbh. Shu's route is so good as a story. Not to mention, since his route, I went to look up the song he quotes, Yellow Rose of Texas, and it's so interesting. I also didn't realize Calamity Jane is also an irl move too - I don't think the plot is quite the same, based on the synopsis tho. Since there's going to be a season 2, I hope Teuta (in Shu's route) will pick up some of Shu's idiosyncrasies- like using the phrase 'The Yellow Rose of Texas' when she has to force herself to do things, or also giving Shu a "anything you want coupon" too, just for funsies. That being said, what would you like to see them touch on in Season 2? Any particular sort of conflicts or stories you want to see? - Anonymous
I wasn’t very fond of Full Circle - they could have executed it way better. I think Minetaka’s (the writer) strong suit is characterisation and character development and not so much the actual mystery, haha. But Auld Lang Syne was a bit better in my opinion! But still not the best.
omg I’ve replayed Shu’s route the most too LOL I think I finished the game in 40 hours but added on another 40 hours just from me opening the game to replay Shu’s route. The majority of my save files are just various points of his route too. His overall development from Chapter 1 to the end of Side B is probably one of my favorite in all otome I’ve played. The way you can really see/feel the relationship beats from Ch1′s hostility to being neutral about her in Ch2, to him accepting her more at the end of Ch2 when she accepts him for who he is. And then depending on what route you go on, either something like familial care towards her or romantic love??? It’s just so good. I could write a whole essay about how he changes over the course of the game.
**Bustafellows Shu route spoilers for anyone who cares**
I think one of my favourite parts is how he’s all “I don’t expect you to understand me nor do I want to tell you about me” at the start, but then they get close and he opens up to her by telling her about the list - but at this point it’s kind of just his general circumstances, stuff that the other Fixers would probably know about too. The next step is him telling her about himself again but they’re only fond and happy memories and doesn’t elaborate much. And THEN later, the first time he actually completely spills his troubles to her, is when he gives her the lighter and tells her he wants her to help quit smoking?? This coming from the guy who purposefully triggers traumatic memories by smoking? He’s LITERALLY giving her the keys to that? He wants to be? Emotionally close to her? By letting go of his trauma of not wanting to be close to others?? How dare you... do this to me!!!!
**End**
I’m rambling you gotta hold me back LMAO - I didn’t know Yellow Rose of Texas was a real folk song - it’s actually quite nice and has a good melody. I’m super curious how Minetaka stumbled across it. I can really see how he must be a bit of a American-movie buff, both from references like these and just the overall vibe of the game.
I have a lot of faith in Minetaka to write something interesting and cool for Shu, so I don’t really have anything in particular I want to see. Rather, I have stuff I don’t want to see: I don’t wanna see them get married! Specifically, I would be a little angry if Shuteu is the only pair that get married. I would be less mad if it was a shared end between say, Shuteu and like, Limteu or something (I can actually see it for Limteu, at least). Just because I think it would undermine the themes and messages present in Shu’s season 1 route. I don’t really like the ‘mature LI’ route ending with marriage as if marriage is just the default conclusion for romances.
