The photos above are from a trek to the summit of Bald Knob in Tucker County, West Virginia earlier today. Bald Knob Trail starts in Canaan Valley State Park and crosses into the Monongahela National Forest before returning to the state park. Many people avoid the steep ascent on foot and take a chair lift from the adjacent ski area instead. I manned up today and made the ascent by foot so I could beat the lazy tourists to the overlook.
From top: the view from Bald Knob toward Weiss Knob and the Canaan Valley State Park ski area; wild geranium (Geranium maculatum), a clumping woodland perennial with gorgeous violet-purple foliage and elegant, sharply-lobed foliage; minniebush (Menziesia pilosa), an Appalachian endemic with distinctive, white-tipped leaves; painted trillium (Trillium undulatum), which has a fondness for shady spots in the strongly-acidic soils of old forests; pink lady’s slipper (Cypripedium acaule), another lover of shady nooks and strongly-acidic soils; and the mysterious depths of the boreal forest at the summit, where Canada mayflower (Maianthemum canadense) and yellow Clintonia (Clintonia borealis), also known as bluebead lily, form dense colonies in the rich humus.

Strouds Run State Park
11661 State Park Rd.
Athens, OH 45701
Strouds Run State Park is a public recreation area abutting the city of Athens in Athens County, Ohio, in the United States. The state park is located primarily in Canaan Township, with a small part in Ames Township. Park boundaries coincide with Athens city limits in several places. The park comprises 2,606 acres, and includes Dow Lake, a 161-acre artificial lake. The original land for the park was purchased for the Athens State Forest in the 1940s and 1950s. In the late 1950s, construction was started on the Dow Lake Dam, which was completed in 1960, at which point the land became Strouds Run State Park in its entirety.
A large area on the west side of the park was formerly land of the Gillett family (Samuel and Charlotte Beach Gillett and their descendants). The family owned well over a thousand acres at one time. The old farmstead seen on the Trace Trail and the "Pioneer Cemetery" are both remnant from the Gillett occupancy of the land. One of the most recently purchased areas of the park was acquired in 1953 from the Crumley family, heirs to Dr. John Jackson Crumley, who purchased the land almost a century ago as an experimental tree farm. Dr. Crumley was a classical scholar who also was one of Ohio's early state foresters, who managed the purchase of the original land for Zaleski State Forest and Hocking State Forest, and who wrote one of the earliest practical handbooks on forestry.
A large part of the upper east side of the part was owned by the Cone family, last owned by Charles Cone and Lucille Gillett Cone, a descendant of Samuel Gillett. Adjacent to the Cone farm was a large, one-room school house that was dismantled when the lake was built. Some of the materials from the school house were then used to construct the Strouds Run Community Church just up the road from the park, as well as a new barn for Charles Cone who lost his previous one to the park's construction. The church was eventually converted into a private residence, and was subsequently completely destroyed in a fire a few years later.
Strouds Run is located within the unglaciated Allegheny Plateau. The park consists of mostly narrow valleys, narrow ridges, and steep hillsides. Bluffs and rock shelters are common throughout the park, formed by the Connellsville sandstone. There are a few springs in the park out of the Ames limestone, including Linscott Spring (which has an historic springhouse). Normal pool elevation of Dow Lake is about 665 feet above sea level, while the highest point in the park is about 1022 feet above sea level. The park is almost entirely within the Strouds Run watershed, although it does not include the entire watershed. The forest in some areas of the park is over a century old without significant disturbance. Common birds in the park include both black and turkey vultures, Canada geese, red-winged blackbirds, red-tailed hawks, red-shouldered hawks, and barn swallows. Beavers and white-tailed deer are common in the park. Bobcats are known to be in the area, but none are known within the park itself.
Facilities include a campground (pit toilets, no shower), swimming beach, boat dock, boat and canoe rentals, pistol, picnic grounds and shelters, and hiking trails. Hunting is permitted in season. Shooting ranges are no longer available for the public. Significant areas of the park are pine plantations (white and red) from the mid-twentieth century, when the land was purchased, originally as the Athens State Forest. There is also one small baldcypress plantation within the park. However, most of the area is mature hardwood forest. The park features many bluffs and rock outcrops of sandstone. Several beaver ponds are within the park boundaries. Many of the trails are open to mountain bikes. The lake is used by Ohio University for aquatic sports such as crew. The lake is also a very common destination of Ohio University students to enjoy the weather on sunny spring or summer days. The lake is stocked on an annual basis with several kinds of fish, including rainbow trout, which cannot survive the winters.

After stopping for a break and lunch at the Cass Scenic Railroad State Park we were back on the motorcycle.  An hour or so later we make it to the southern terminus of the Highland Scenic Highway.
About 43 miles later we came out on the other end of the highway near the Snowshoe Resort Area. I am going to do a separate post on the Highland Scenic Highway.
Tumblr media
The view from the top of Snowshoe Mountain.
In the mid-Atlantic area of the US Snowshoe is one of the premier snow skiing areas, and in the summer is renowned for mountain biking. For us, today, it was the end of a day of riding and touring on the motorcycle.  We rolled up to the Snowshoe Inn, got a great meal at a nearby restaurant and turned in early.
The folks at Snowshoe Inn were very motorcycle friendly. The allowed us and three others to park our bikes under their covered entrance, somewhat out of the elements.
The next morning, we awoke to dense fog in the valleys that climbed quite away up the mountain sides.  We rode at a slower pace due to visibility issues and not wanting to run into any deer, literately.
The ride out of the Snowshoe area could have been great fun.  If we could have seen more then a couple dozen yards ahead!  Oh well, maybe next time.
There were a LOT of hairpin turns!
By the time the fog had burned off we were back at Yokum’s Store in Seneca Rocks.  A sausage, egg and cheese sandwich with a Dr. Pepper hit the spot and now both the motorcycle and its passengers were full and ready to roll.
Roll we did, through the rolling hills of the Greenbrier and Canaan Valleys, up and over a couple ridges we were soon at the last stop of our long weekend, Blackwater Falls State Park outside Davis, WV.
Blackwater Falls gets it name from the color of the water that flows over the waterfall.  A very dark brown to black flow, picked up from the rocks over which it flows.  400 steps round trip for some wonderful pictures and a good time with the wife.
The last major road we traveled was Corridor H (US Route 48) or as many call it, the “Road to No Where”.  It starts north of Davis, WV and ends near the VA boarder running for about 100 miles.  I am going to do a separate post on this road as it is a real beauty.
Our weekend covered 3 days and 610 miles of awesome Twisty, Technical, Tight, Scenic roads.
Twisty, Technical, Tight, Scenic…Our long weekend motorcycle ride. Part 2  Click here for part 1.  After stopping for a break and lunch at the Cass Scenic Railroad State Park…

HEY SO!!!!!! as i *cough* may have indicated, i just finished listening to the first episode of the adventure zone: amnesty, and while i finish packing up my apartment to move immediately and without a moment’s hesitation to kepler, wv, for the rest of my goddamn life, i would like to impart to you - as your friendly neighborhood mountaineer - a few nuggets of WV worldbuilding you may find of use in your upcoming fics and arts!!!!!!!!!!! i spent the entire setup episode with my head on fire because i’m just that!!!!!!! excited!!!!!!!!!!! about a show set in my home state, aka, west virginia, aka, the best state in the union, come fight me, buckeyes get a beatdown first.
far be it from me to quarrel with my favorite hometown boys, but my mama’s from upstate WV and i have never heard Monongahela pronounced “mon-ong-uh-HEE-luh” in my whole life. it’s “mon-ong-uh-HAY-luh,” sorry, mcelroys!!! anyway, kepler is gonna be located somewhere in the monongahela national forest; there is also a monongahela river, but it’s not nearby (you might instead reference the greenbrier river!). (on a related and very serious note, if any of you need to pronounce Appalachia - which is the geographical region in which our story takes place - you SHALL pronounce it correctly: “apple-at-chuh” not “apple-ayt-cha,” “apple-ay-shuh,” or any other damn way the northeast has foisted upon us.)
because of the twin peaks-y setting, y’all will be tempted to put a diner in this town. in fact, i put about even odds on griffin putting a diner in this town. i humbly request you resist this urge; diners are kind of a…northeast/out west kind of convention. i’m not saying they DON’T exist in wv (they definitely do) and i’m not saying they can’t be super effective in offbeat supernatural stories set in wv (they sure can!), but the convention of a 24-hour pancakes-and-burgers, 50s-styled chrome-decorated restaurant called a diner isn’t really a wv thing. i posit to you these possibilities instead: a touristy hot dog stand, a Shoney’s or Dairy Queen or Tudor’s Biscuit World (the staples of my dining-out experience until the age of 13), a local building that has been no fewer than three separate Mexican restaurants that just can’t seem to stay open, or even the restaurant attached to the “inn” that’s probably a little faded and threadbare since its resort town glory days but can still fix you up with some killer biscuits and gravy and decent coffee in the morning.
the local grocery store probably looks something like this. down the mountain, in whatever the first town of any size is, you can find a kroger and a walmart.
i thought i’d hunt up a few pics of wv national park rangers. looks to me like pretty much all us park rangers wear the same thing, but maybe the badges can be different? i’ll do more research and let you know what i find out.
here’s the green bank telescope, which i visited as a tiny child!
Tumblr media
and here you can read more about the FUCKING MASSIVE WIRELESS DEAD ZONE that it lives in!! nifty and INCREDIBLY SPOOKY!!
here is Snowshoe, the Bigger, Better Ski Resort that has sent Kepler into decline.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(i think Kepler’s gonna be a little more like Canaan [kuh-NAYN] Valley, myself; the resort lodge and the nearby town has got that slightly more 50s/60s once-chic-now-shabby vibe that is quintessentially west virginia to me, although they’ve remodeled the lodge interior since i was younger.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and finally, OUR HEROES’ ACCENTS. charming as the boys’ accents are, people from rural eastern wv like Ned and Duck are gonna sound much more recognizably wv.
youtube
the young football player being interviewed here is from the same county where snowshoe resort and green bank are located.
youtube
this wv state senator is a native of the next county to the west.
i tried HARD to find some african american accents from anywhere close to the region amnesty is set and i was thwarted for like an hour and a half so instead here are an unembeddable video of a woman with an accent from a few counties west (my home county!) and a young man from the very southern part of the state:
youtube
AND FINALLY i know we haven’t heard travis voicing aubrey yet, and i am sure that whatever he does will be delightful. HOWEVER. i posit that no matter what he ends up deciding for her backstory, there is at least one universe in which aubrey is from DEEP in a holler in eastern kentucky.
youtube

OKAY I HAVE OFFICIALLY SPENT FOUR HOURS ON THIS and i’m like nowhere even close to having said everything i wanna say on this topic but FOR NOW i’ll leave you with these. if you have questions or just wish to scream in my face about this arc, please do not hesitate to crash my inbox.

One of the many beaver-engineered wetlands complexes in Canaan Valley. The dam, now over-grown with sedges and cattails, is as impressive a feat of engineering for rodents as the Hoover Dam is for human beings. More to the point, beavers are the key drivers to the ecological well-being of Canaan Valley’s extensive wetlands, and for the most part, staff at the National Wildlife Refuge and Canaan Valley State Park let them do their thing - to the point of occasionally letting them flood boardwalks and trails.
From top: spring cress (Cardamine bulbosa), a wetlands-loving relative of the toothworts, which is similarly edible; false green hellebore (Veratrum viride), a potentially-deadly mountain beauty, whose alkaloid-laden leaves and roots can cause cardiac arrest if ingested in sufficient amounts; dotted hawthorn (Crataegus punctata), an important food and shelter tree for wildlife in the valley; woodland strawberry (Fragaria vesca L.), distinguished from the similar wild strawberry (Fragaria virginiana) by sepals that point backwards and seeds on the surface of the fruit; and Robin’s plantain (Erigeron pulchellus), the most impressive and beautiful of the spring fleabanes in Central Appalachia.

The Coffee Stores In Davis WV Are The Best Places To Study Or Chill
Finding a proper spot where you can sit down with your books or spend some time unwinding from daily grinds can be quite difficult. The music playing in the background or the busy streets right outside the outlet can be distracting to you. The people sitting close to you and conversing can also be disturbing. After all, you’re going to study and prepare yourself for the examination a week later. Or maybe you want to get out of the hectic life of the busy city and spend some time in a tranquil setting. There is a coffee shop standing among the quiet and magnificent Appalachian Mountains.
An intriguing sight
Whenever you pass by a coffee shop at the downtown area, you notice students studying there. Most of them sit inside the store and have a book or a laptop before them. It intrigues you primarily because you never tried it. However, you do feel hunger and thirst creeping up to you when you’re spending long hours with study materials. Where can you find something to eat or drink when and if there is nothing at your house? You can’t afford to waste time by going to a store near you to pick up eatables. Then again, you can’t visit the Coffee stores in Davis WV or order coffee online from trailheadcoffeeshop.com. It will take some time to reach you. So, if you have a week to spare at hand, you can pack your books and laptop and visit the coffee shop in the mountains.
Laid back atmosphere
The Coffee stores in Davis WV provide you the laid-back atmosphere that Millenials like you seek. The workers there are all well-mannered and will always greet you with a smile. You will also get some unique and tasty bites there, not to mention the rich chocolates. Since the coffee shop is at a remote location, you won’t encounter a noisy crowd, as long as you’re not visiting during festive and holiday seasons. You may also be looking for an area worth traversing as you’re not going abroad this vacation. The Monongahela National Forest, the Appalachian Mountains, the Canaan Valley, and the Blackwater Falls state parks will surely conquer your hearts and minds.
More Specialties
The facilities aren’t active currently, but soon the coffee shop in discussion here will start after-hours movie showings. It will also host outdoor adventure flicks and sporting events. Taking part in physical activities in the mountains is fun of a different level. When the gush of fresh air wipes away the city dirt from your lungs, you will contemplate the pleasure of breathing. Also, you will watch various movies of different genres in full 4k Ultra HD screens. The coffee shop will try and feature the live telecasts of important matches too. You will be able to recline in a family-friendly surrounding. You can study or have fun.
About the store
The coffee shop serves customers with signatory and certified organic coffee, tea, and chocolates. The partnering agency of this store is the Stone Tower Joe coffee brewers located close. The tea is from Rishi, and the chocolates are from Endangered Species Chocolates, Devine Chocolates, and El Ceibo. The store also sells guidebooks and maps to those who wish to explore the beautiful surroundings.
