So It's Gonna Be Forever

Summary: Joel Miller and Emily Harper have been best friends since 2nd grade and at the end of freshman year become something more. Will they last or will their new label ruin it all. OR Joel Miller gets some lovin' because god knows he deserves it.

Chapter 3

Warnings: Mentions of rough childhood and some violence between father and son but that isn't for another few chapters.Mentions and allusions to smut but never actually turns into smut.

I understand that this might not be everyone's cup of tea so if it's not for you, just don't read.

Joel and Emily had met when they were 7 years old at a playground in their neighbourhood. Emily’s family had moved from a different neighbourhood and the girl was determined to make new friends. Joel’s mother had taken him and Tommy to the playground and, while Tommy was more than happy with toddling around with some of the other kids, Joel preferred to sit on the grass under the tree, humming to himself.

“Hi, I’m Emily.” Joel looked up from the picture he had drawn with a stick in the dirt and frowned. “What’s your name?”

“Joel.” He mumbled and Emily sat down next to him.

“What’cha drawin’?” She asked and Joel smiled slightly.

“A castle from one of the books my mama read to me and my brother.”

“I like castles too. We should play castles.” She announced and Joel frowned.

“You can play castles?” Emily nodded and Joel smiled. “I’ll play if you teach me.” He tried and Emily nodded again.

“Me and you can be the prince and the princess and your brother could be one of our knights.” She explained and Joel shrugged, taking her outstretched hand and following him to the climbing frame.

From then on, Joel and Emily would always sit under that same tree and plan out their next game, their mothers getting closer as they saw their kids getting closer. Tommy joined in a lot too, Emily often promising to let him be the knight and go off pretending to fight off some of the ‘enemies’ that were just poor unsuspecting kids on the swings.

Eventually, Joel and Tommy would be taken to the Harper’s house every other weekend for playdates and for both Carol and Maria to talk to someone that wasn’t their husbands or the moms that gossiped on the school yard. Occasionally, Joel’s father would join them but the night would only end sour when Maria advised that another beer wasn’t wise and then he would flip and decide that their night of fun was over, dragging both Tommy and Joel kicking and screaming back into his truck.

Even now, Jerry and Carol would never forget the look of pure terror on Maria’s face whenever Richard would storm over to the boys and demand they put on their shoes and coats and head out to the truck. Deep down, there had always been a sneaking suspicion that Maria wasn’t as ok with her marriage as she pretended she was but nobody dared bring it up, not wanting to upset her and possibly scare her off.

Joel knew his father had a violent streak after he saw him squeezing his mother’s wrist a little too tightly after she had politely hugged Jerry goodbye and left a kiss on his cheek. After that day, his twelve year old self vowed that he would try his best to make sure she never got hurt by him and that he kept Tommy safe when his mother couldn’t. When his mother died, Joel took Tommy and they received the comfort they needed from Emily and her parents, Richard running off to a pub to drown out whatever sorrow he had in beer.

At that point, Joel and Emily had only been together for a few months but she didn’t hesitate to do whatever she could to help him find a bit of normality. Now, almost three years since he asked her to be his girlfriend, she was dragging him over to her house in order to celebrate his birthday, Tommy trailing behind them.

“Emily, I swear to God. It ain’t a big deal and I have work tomorrow.” He groaned but she just shook her head.

“Cancelled it. Rick was very understanding.” She said sarcastically and Joel scoffed.

“Highly understanding my ass. Why is it so important to you anyway?”

“Your eighteenth is sort of a big deal to me, Joel. To my mom and dad too. I know your shitty father probably doesn’t even know what today is but we do so we’re celebrating in the best way we could.”

“I don’t think your parents want to be there for that, sweet cheeks.” He teased and she slapped his chest, rolling her eyes.

Carol and Jerry had prepared a meal for Joel, one they knew his mother used to make for him and Joel choked on his tears. “She always tried to teach me how to make this but my shitty cooking could never handle it.” He joked and Emily shuffled further into his side, all of them sat on the couch after the dishes had been put away.

“Well, there’s a few things for you to open.” Carol pushed but Joel shook his head.

“You guys didn’t have to get me anything. Hell you’ve already given me the best birthday present I could ask for. You don’t have to waste your money on me.” Joel tried but they all shook their heads.

“It ain’t a waste if it’s going to someone who deserves it. Catch, this ones from me and Jerry.” Carol threw him a packaged bow and Joel opened it, grinning when he saw the guitar polishing equipment and repair kit.

“How’d you know?” He asked with a slight smile and they shrugged.

“Everytime we ask you to play, a cloud of dust follows the music.” Emily pointed out and Joel pinched her side, pouting.

“This ones from me.” Tommy passed Joel another present and Joel raised his eyebrows as he revealed a Dallas Cowboys jersey.

“Now who the hell did you rob to get the money for somethin’ like this?” Joel asked with a smile and pulled his brother into a tight hug.

“Drugs. Really gets the cash rollin’ in.” Tommy teased and Joel shoved his palm into Tommy’s head.

“Well, time for mine I suppose.” She handed him her present and he smiled as he saw the many music CDs she had bought for him. A few Linda Ronstandt CDs and then some country music as well as some other bands and artists that she knew he liked.

“Thank you baby.” He muttered before pressing a gentle kiss to her lips. A clear of her father’s throat made him pull away and Emily rolled her eyes, glaring at her father.

“Thank you, all of you. I appreciate it a lot.” Joel said and smiled, pressing another kiss to Emily’s temple before Carol stood.

“Actually, there’s one more gift. Now, I’ll let you open it first and then I’ll explain.” Joel frowned in confusion as Carol handed him a box and an envelope. Joel opened the envelope and pulled out a letter, handwriting neat but blotches laid across the page.

My darling,

If you’ve been given this, it probably means that the worst has happened. I never wanted to have to write this but I know that they doubt I’ll make it a few more months nevermind a few more years. I want you to know that I’ll always be proud of you Joel and that I love you very dearly. Truth is, I’m scared to die, not because I’m scared of what comes after but because I’m scared of what will happen to my boys. When you were 12 years old, your lips still sore from where your father had hit when he threw the football at you, you promised to always keep me and your brother safe and I know that you’ve kept your promise and I know that you and Tommy will always have each other, no matter what. Now, I’m scared I’ll run out of paper to write both you and Tommy a letter so I better get to the point and hope that you just know how much I love you. Inside the box is a watch that was given to my grandfather when he turned eighteen and passed down to my father. He wanted to give it to his oldest grandson which just so happens to be you. When you and Emily eventually give me a grandbaby, I know you tried to hide it but I saw you both sneaking out of the back door a few nights ago. I want you to give it to them on their 18th birthday and give them a million and one kisses from me.

I approve of her, Joel. She’s good for you and I know you love her, even if it will take you a while to admit it to her. I love you so so much and wish I could have been there for your special day today and see just how happy you and Tommy are. Never forget how special you are baby, love you always and forever,

Joel stared down at the paper in his hands and noticed the tears that had joined his mothers on the page. He folded the paper and tucked it into his wallet before picking up the box and unwrapping it. He took the watch out of the box, turning it over in his hands to see the engravings on the back of the face. In tiny writing, there read three names.

Joel clipped the watch onto his wrist, the metal clasp a stark contrast to the warmth of his skin. “You okay?” Emily asked gently and Joel nodded, pulling her closer to him and pushing his face into her hair.

“I love you, so fucking much.” He choked out and she smiled while he turned to look at Carol and Jerry. “Thank you, for everything. You practically took me and Tommy in and then you do all this for me and Jerry got me a job. I don’t know what I’ll do to make it up to you but I’m gonna try my damn hardest.”

Joel was embraced by both Carol and Jerry before he hugged Emily again, settling down on the couch as Jerry flipped on the TV. “Now, I know we ain’t got many films but this one used to be a fan favourite.” As the opening credits of the movie started playing, Emily bundled herself up in the blanket had pulled down from the back of the couch and squeezed the hand that she was holding on her inner thigh.

“I love you.” Joel leant down to whisper into her ear. Now that the words had finally been said, he decided that he needed to tell her at every possible moment, needing to make up for all the times he hadn’t said it back.

“I love you too.”

When the movie had ended, Tommy thanked them for dinner and headed up to the spare room while Jerry headed to the bathroom. Carol stayed sat down and Emily caught her eye. Joel had fallen asleep half way through the movie, the emotional events taking a bigger toll on him than he had expected. “Can I speak to you, once Joel is in bed?” Carol asked and she nodded, smiling tiredly.

“Joel. C’mon baby, let’s go to bed.” Emily nudged him and Joel opened one eye before huffing and closing it again, gaining a small laugh out of both Emily and Carol. “C’mon cowboy, go sleep in a real bed.”

“You comin’?” Joel huffed and Emily nodded.

“Yeah, I’m comin’ up right behind you, Joel.” Joel nodded and smiled dopily at Carol before heading up the stairs.

“What d’you wanna talk about?” Emily asked, turning to her mother after watching Joel up the stairs.

“Well, we know Joel and Tommy don’t exactly get along with their dad, and me and your father know that, since Maria passed away, they haven’t exactly had a great summer break and your grandparents have offered us the lakehouse again for two weeks so-.” Emily grinned.

“I’ll talk to him about it. I’m sure he’ll say yes, Tommy will want to anyway.” Emily added and Carol just nodded.

“Well, you let us know what he says honey.” Emily nodded, kissing her mother on the cheek before walking into the bathroom to brush her teeth and then into her room where Joel was laid in a pair of sweatpants, starfishing the bed. “Hey, move over to your side, fat ass.” Emily teased, pinching his ass cheek.

“What took you so long? I’m cold.” Joel whined and Emily laid on her side of the bed, wriggling slightly to get comfortable.

“Just talking to mom, I’ll tell you tomorrow.”

Months passed by, Joel and Tommy spending their Christmas break with the Harpers and, as March drew to a close, Joel realised just how close he was to officially leaving school and was making it his life’s mission to annoy Emily with his knowledge.

“Joel, baby. I love you, I really do, but if you mention how close we are to graduating school one more time, I will not hesitate to fucking kick you out of my bed.” Emily groaned one afternoon when she and Joel had been going over their workbooks.

“Sorry.” He muttered and rested his head on his arm as he almost face planted the bed. “I got a call from my grandma a few days ago.” Joel whispered, almost like it was a secret.

“Your mom's mom?” Emily asked, shocked and Joel nodded.

“She wanted to see me and Tommy and I didn’t promise him anything because I didn’t want him to get his hopes up. Point is, they had a proposal for me.” Emily looked at him and he smiled.

“You know that house on Fairway, the one that never has anybody living in it?” Emily nodded and Joel grinned. “Turns out it belongs to my grandparents and they want me to have it, they promised my ma that, as soon as I was old enough to have the deeds signed over, I could have it. They set a meeting up with some lawyer or something and, before the end of this year, the house should be mine.”

“Joel, that’s great baby. Your own house, a proper job. How the hell am I meant to top that?” Emily joked and Joel looked at her sincerely.

“What if you moved in with me?”

“What?” Emily asked, wondering if he was joking.

“When your dad found out about me and you, his only request was that I looked after you. Baby, I’ll be working full-time, not just stupid hours at the garage, I’ll have a house that I’ll only need to pay for water and electricity. Course, I’ll have to find a way for Tommy to stay with me, I’m sure he could live with my grandma but-.”

“Joel, Joel. Take a step back a second. You’d want me to move in with you?” She asked, her hand resting on top of his.

“Of course I do. I spend the majority of my free time with you, I stay here most weekends and I-. Ok, I don’t expect you to answer me straight away, hell the house hasn’t even been signed to me yet. Think about it, talk to your folks about it and let me know, ok? Even if you just stay a few nights a week, I don’t care. I don’t constantly want to feel like I’m pushing your parents to provide for me and Tommy.”

“You know they don’t mind one bit-.”

“You didn’t let me finish. I don’t want to have to live with my dad anymore and I want to get Tommy out as soon as possible, ok? I don’t want to keep depending on him because it just gives him another reason to keep talking to me and keep thinking he’s my father. Understand?” Emily nodded and Joel leaned over and cupped her jaw, pressing a kiss to her lips and then her nose. “Think about it, we’ve got plenty of time to figure it out, sweet cheeks. Hell, you live with your parents for as long as you want.” He pecked her again before the door swung open and Tommy stood in the doorway.

“You’ll never believe it, Joel.” Tommy cried and Joel frowned.

“What?”

“Grandma turned up at home and confronted dad. Hell, he really wasn’t happy about it but as soon as I saw Aunt Laura’s car I came runnin’ over here. Come on, I wanna-.” Joel was already out of the bed, telling Tommy to stay put and heading out of the door, hopping as he pulled on his trainers and jogged down the street towards his house.

“She left those boys with you and you failed them!” Joel could hear the yelling from outside the house and rushed in, met with the sight of his father standing in front of the counter, face red with anger and his grandmother and Aunt stood across from him, equally as angry.

“She set them up for failure after she fuckin’ babied them all their lives. Can’t play football for shit, can’t throw a punch. Hell, the youngest looks like some fucking girl.” Richard yelled and Joel walked closer.

“Shut up about Tommy or I swear to God.” Joel seethed and all eyes were on him as he stood up straighter, the few centimetres he had over his father making the older man have to look up slightly. ��If it weren’t for her, me and Tommy would have been living off of meals from the Harpers but the basic shit she got to teach me means I can make us some breakfast and I can make a few meals here and there.” Silence fell across the room and Joel scoffed.

“Who the hell do you think you are boy? Your mother always said you’d end up with that girl down the road and once you finally get your dick wet, the slut’s mother brainwashes-.” Joel couldn’t comprehend the words before he swung his arm and landed a punch on his fathers jaw.

“Don’t say a word about them, any of them.” Joel was pushing his father slightly and didn’t hear the other footsteps come into the house. “Carol gave me and Tommy food and made sure we had a safe, clean space to sleep.” He shoved his father further backwards, emotion seeping through his words. “Jerry always offered me someone to talk to and has even set me up with a job that’ll see me through til I’m ready to retire.” Joel pushed him again but harder. “And that girl is my fucking girlfriend. She is the one constant that I’ve had since ma died and you ain’t even met her properly. She didn’t care that I was fuckin’ heartbroken, didn’t care that I take Tommy everywhere with me and she sure as hell didn’t when it took me almost three years to admit out loud that I loved her. Where were you for my eighteenth birthday? For Tommy’s fifteenth?” Joel hit his father’s chest and the man’s back hit the wall.

“I’ve spent years holdin’ out a little bit of hope that maybe you’d grow up and turn into the father that you were meant to be. Hell, even after you sent me away and admitted that you didn’t see me as your son, I held out hope. I wanted you to be better, dad. I was rootin’ for you. I cleaned up after you, I made sure there was meds for your hangovers, I kept your kid alive and after all that, you still ain’t got nothin’ good to say about any of us. After all that, you still say that my mama raised me wrong.” Joel clenched his fists and watched as amusement flashed across his father’s face.

“You always were a mama’s boy. Used to sit there and let her read to you and she’d let the pair of you get away with murder.” It almost sounded like his father was reminiscing. “But the bitch never learnt to let you grow up.” Joel didn’t hold back this time, punching him again and again and again until his fist was sore and his father had a bloody nose and was slumped against the wall. Letting all his anger out on him until someone wrapped their arms around him and pulled him away.

“I wanna kill him! Let me kill him! It should have been you!” Joel yells were let out through tears and sobs and he felt himself being held tighter as he tried to fight the grasp of whoever was holding him. He noticed the work boots of Jerry and then it was dark as his head was pressed against the man, turning him away from the person he had to call his father.

“You’re ok, kid. I’ve got ya, you’re ok, Joel.” Jerry muttered into his ear and Joel hit his arms against Jerry’s chest weakly before he felt his legs give out and black clouded his mind.

Actually, here's a few more scatterbrained thoughts:

The Bats of Christmas Past had me chanting "I am sick of the batfamily, I am sick of the batfamily, I am sick of the batfamily" for a little while so that's fun 🙃.

Honestly, I fucking loved it when Dick thought, The house doesn't smell like Alfred's cooking. For a moment, it really throws me.

That was hands down the best part of the story for me. The acknowledgment that Alfred isn't there. The acknowledgment that Christmas feels different because Alfred isn't there. The food Dick's used to smelling when he walks into the house isn't there, and it completely derails him for a second.

That grief, that pain, that nostalgia... it's all there. I love the fact that it's hard for Dick to want to get together with his family because of that. The holidays can be really hard to get through when you're missing the people you used to celebrate with, and that is obviously the case for Dick in this story.

I also got emotional over the last lines when Dick thought, So we make new traditions. Someday, when I see him again, I'll tell him all about them.

😭 Like, please. He's gonna have so much to tell Alfie when they meet again 😭🥺.

Whew. Okay. So anyway.

I wasn't all that happy with the ghost Babs part (or really any of the Babs parts but especially the ghost part).

The whole point of that was basically for her to be like, "You ruined Christmas for Bruce, Alfred, Jason, and yourself because you didn't come out of your room."

And Dick was like, "Omg it's all my fault because I didn't come out of my room."

Oh my godddd. Get fucking bent. Especially if this is supposed to take place during the 18 months that Dick and Bruce weren't in contact with each other. And if it happened after the events of Batman #416 then I don't buy the idea that Dick would be lying around in bed waiting for Bruce to call him. Would it have made sense for Dick to be really sad during the first Christmas he spent away from Bruce and Alfred and for him to be waiting around expecting a phone call from them? Yeah, absolutely. Because Bruce pushed him away during that time and never reached out to him. Dick had to reach out to Bruce 18 months after Bruce wouldn't be partners with him anymore, remember?

But it says in this issue that Bruce called Dick a few days earlier and that things were fine between them, so they've clearly been on decent enough terms in this story. And if they're on decent terms then why doesn't Dick just call Bruce and Alfred instead of waiting for them to call him? If things were fine between them a few days ago then why is Dick acting like Bruce and Alfred don't care about him?

I think the writer just kinda fucked up the timeline of events during that time. So then Dick gets all the blame for fucking up a past Christmas for some damn reason.

And he would have gotten all the blame for ruining this year's Christmas for everyone else, and he gets blamed for ruining every future Christmas because ghost Cass shows him that he dies on Christmas.

It's just like... what the fuck. If Dick doesn't want to go to the party, he shouldn't have to go to the party. And his absence shouldn't be the reason he gets blamed for ruining the Christmas party.

So. Yeah. That was basically my thoughts on that story. As for A Carol of Bats... well. I'm exhausted just thinking about it. So. Pass.

I liked the first part of Robin & Batman #2. Even if it was way out of line, I like that the headmaster asked, "I wonder, if Mr. Wayne is so busy, why he chose to take Richard in as his ward?"

Because if you were the headmaster or any other adult, you probably would feel bad for Dick if you saw his butler picking him up every day, and if the butler was always coming in for parent-teacher conferences and things like that. You'd be like, "Where the hell is that Wayne guy? He can't even make time for his kid?"

I also like that Alfred got Dick a new journal and that he specifically told Dick that what Bruce did was wrong. It was a good way for Alfred to validate Dick's feelings over Bruce invading his privacy.

Moving on to Dick's introduction of the Justice League and the other members of the fab five. I'm gonna be honest... I didn't like it. I didn't like how Dick was treated like some random new sidekick. And I understand that it has to be like that in this story because Dick is only just now getting to be Robin, so he doesn't have his longstanding reputation of being the first sidekick yet (which is a problem). There is no Robin legacy at this point, and that sucks. No one has the respect for him that they should.

Roy is dismissive of Dick and makes fun of his name. Garth looks like he couldn't care less to be meeting Dick. Wally and Donna are clearly the most inviting but even they don't seem super interested in who Dick is. And I hate that. It's just not the vibe I would've hoped for upon their first meeting.

I also hate that Bruce turned what was supposed to be a birthday gift into a mission (I mean, not really surprised because it is Bruce we're talking about, but c'mon). At least Alfred's gobsmacked reaction upon finding out that information was hilarious.

Same, Alfie. Same.

Honestly, the only thing this comic is proving to me is that Alfred is clearly the better parental figure. He's trying to raise Dick to be a happy and healthy child and then there's Bruce coming in hot and fumbling the ball into a flaming wormhole.

If you had the chance to rename the Cullens based on their time periods and personality, what would you pick?

Here's the thing about 'Carlisle': it makes absolutely no sense as a name for this era, but it's also somehow perfect for him? It's hard to think of this character being named something else. Honestly part of the reason I'm still so salty about 'Renesmee' is that I generally really liked the names she picked for pretty much all the other characters (okay "Beautiful Swan" is a little on the nose, but), which makes 'Renesmee' all the more like nails on a chalkboard to me in comparison. 'Carlisle' somehow has a sense of strength and gentleness at the same time, it's unusual but not made-up. It feels old fashioned and English even though it's not really accurate to the era.

If I had to pick something more realistic for the era, I'd probably skip over the list of most common names. Like 75% of men in this time period were named John, Richard, Robert, Thomas, William, Henry, George, Nicholas, Edward or James. But there were names we would consider weird or unusual in this era, too, that would still be historically accurate in a way 'Carlisle' just isn't.

Marmaduke. Lancelot. Tristam. Hercules. Cuthbert.

And of course if we make Carlisle's father hardcore Puritan, that opens up the Puritan hortatory names like "Stand-Fast" "Kill-Sin," "Humiliation" and "If-Jesus-Christ-Had-Not-Died-for-Thee-Thou-Hadst-Been-Damned" (this dude opted to go by 'Nicholas' instead and I don't blame him one bit).

tl;dr: 'Carlisle' is anachronistic but it works. If we want to be realistic, name him William or Nicholas. Percival or Lancelot would have similar weird, old, heroic sort of vibes, but seem unlikely for his father to have picked. Emmanuel? Ambrose?

Likewise Edward is just Edward. It works. Wouldn't change it. Edythe should have just been Edith. The whole point is that he has a boring, common name from his era; Edythe should have too. Ditto Alice. Totally works and is fine for the era. I legit really appreciated she didn't name her star characters like Tristan Apollo Cullen and Seraphina Cassandra Cullen or something. Edward Anthony and Mary Alice yes thank you.

'Esme' is the other one that really doesn't make much sense. I sort of assumed her family must have been of French origin for her to have that name, but even then they'd probably have used Esmee (with the accent on the second to last E that I am too lazy to manifest). I like how it's short and 'cute,' that seems to suit her. So maybe something with that same vibe. Use her middle name, Anne? Anna? Emma? Clara? Elsie? Kinda feeling Elsie.

Jasper is unusual but not unheard of. (Would actually have worked for Carlisle, too--there are a few from his era). He could probably keep it. "Ronald" would have been more statistically likely, but I don't think it has the right ~vibes. I'd probably just keep Jasper. Although it does read as a very old man name to me, fwiw, because I originally pictured Jasper Beardsley from The Simpsons.

Likewise Rosalie and Emmett are a little unusual for their time period but not anachronistically so. They were in use, just not widespread. Of all the names, 'Emmett' always felt the most modern and least old fashioned to me, probably because I went to school with an 'Emmett' so it was contemporary to me. (Likewise I had no problem with "Jessamine" in Life & Death because I went to high school with a Jessamyn, so it sounded perfectly 'normal' to me). There was in fact an uptick in the use of the name "Emmett" around the time he was born, so I think it can stay, too. I do feel like the nickname 'Em' is a little weird (especially when we also have an Emily and an Embry). With his last name having been McCarty in his human life, I sort of imagined his nickname would have been 'Mac' instead.

Rosalie was originally "Carol" but she could have also been 'Mildred" "Virginia" or "Evelyn" if we wanted popular names of the era. Like 'Emmett', 'Rosalie' isn't totally unheard of but not in the top 10. Carol just doesn't have the same fancy, look-at-me vibes as Rosalie. I'd probably keep 'Rosalie' because it would make sense that her parents would give her a kind of frilly name vs Mary or Helen or something. They always wanted her to stand out (unlike with 'Renesmee' when the Cullens are trying to blend in argh).

Day 2: found family

Harry finds his family through Peter.

The Parker family had one motto that Harry remembered hearing growing up. “Ohana means family.” It was said no matter what was going on in Harry’s life. He was part of the Parker’s Ohana. Richard and Mary treated him like a second son until they passed. His mother did the same for Peter until she passed. Even after years apart, Harry and Peter were family before anything else. Even when they became more than friends. Harry didn’t find ohana until he found Peter. Peter leads to more though. Peter led to Morgan and Harley who were siblings. Peter led to more parents, uncles, and aunts than he could count (including Captain Marvel aka Carol Danvers who was Harry’s favorite hero). Harry slowly gained a family through being close to Peter. By being at Peter’s side. He slowly found his ohana of late nights with Pepper Potts talking business, or playing Mario Kart with Clint Barton and Sam Wilson. It was a bigger family than he had before. He slowly gained it by living with the family he made. It wasn’t until they were laying in bed one night that Harry realized how much his found family mattered.

“Tony invited us to Morgan’s party on Saturday,” Peter said.

“I guess I will have to cancel the meeting,” Harry said without a second thought.

“What meeting?” Peter asked.

“Norman wanted to meet about finances and me taking over the company which I don’t want anymore,” Harry said.

“You wanted to have an art studio where you can spend your days while I work on technology all day in my lab,” Peter said smiling. It had always been their dreams that they had. Emily had always supported her son, but Norman wanted Harry to take over the family business. He wanted him to be the next Osborn in power which Harry did not want.

“I wish he would stop trying,” Harry said. “I am eighteen now. I can refuse to go to any of these meetings he keeps setting up but he wouldn’t allow that knowing Norman. He would find a way around the laws.”

“I will always protect you from him. So would the Avengers,” Peter said.

“He doesn’t know about us,” Harry said. “He always pictured me with a girl and he is against my lifestyle.”

“Norman isn’t your father,” Peter said. The truth of that hit Harry like it never did before. He hadn’t called Norman dad in so long and even thinking about him being his father felt wrong. Actually if he was being honest, Clint Barton had been more of a father to him than Norman. Hell Happy Hogan was more of a father and the man was Peter’s uncle now that he was married to May.

“You are right,” Harry said looking at Peter who was the boy who introduced him to his found family. Peter who had done everything he could to keep Harry from feeling alone. He didn’t know what it was like to live in a world without Peter Parker and he never wanted to. Peter was the reason he found a family and was holding on to a family currently. A family who cared for him more than anyone. People who supported his every move. Harry was thankful for Peter Parker and he wanted to show him how thankful he was but he was going to need some help from his family.

Harley was like a brother to Harry. The two were similar in a lot of ways but they also had their differences. Harry told Harley his plan and Harley gave some suggestions and before he knew it they were working on the plan in the lab.

“Do you think Peter will appreciate all of this?” Harry asked. Harley nodded knowing Peter would appreciate anything Harry gave him. Peter loved Harry more than he would let on. The boys were soulmates if anyone had ever seen soulmates before.

“Peter will appreciate this more than you think,” Harley explained. Harry seemed glad to hear that and sometimes Harley had noticed that words of encouragement went a long way when talking to Harry Osborn. Harry talked to him about some additional plans as he explained to Harley how certain parts of the present would work. Harley smiled as he thought about how Harry was so brilliant and how great he was for his brother. Peter was like a brother to Harley as much as Harry was. The two were a great support for one another and completed each other in ways that Harley had not seen before. Harley wished he would be there to see Harry give Peter his gift but he figured that Harry would choose a private moment between them.

Peter’s birthday came up before he knew it and Harry was spoiling him with hugs and kisses and cuddles. His family had decided to host a birthday party which Peter thought was a bit over the top but this was Tony Stark they were talking about. Peter enjoyed the party but when presents came, he was a bit worried everyone would over buy for him. Luckily it was just a few lego sets and clothes. The big lego set was definitely from Tony even if he claimed it was from Morgan. He played along but he knew if he asked Morgan she would admit the truth about the set.

“I got one last present for you,” Harry said. Everyone was curious as Harley seemed to smile. Harry handed him a box that was small. Peter opened it only to find a watch. Peter looked at Harry confused until Harry told him to put the watch on. Peter did as he was asked and he looked at it still confused.

“Hit the button on the side three times,” Harry said. Peter did so and then he heard it even if most of the others couldn’t. It was a heartbeat. Harry’s to be exact. Harry held up his watch so Peter could see the matching watch to his. He was able to check on Harry’s heartbeat whenever he needed to.

“You did this?” Peter asked.

“Harley did. I know you said that hearing my heartbeat calms you down sometimes so I figured it would be the perfect present since you were the one that helped me find my family now you can always check on me when you need to,” Harry said. He knew he made no sense but Peter pulled him into a hug.

“Thank you,” Peter said. Harry soaked in the feeling of being held by the person he loved the most. He never wanted to be away from Peter again.

Alright so guys this is my first written series. it's of star trek so if you guys find mistakes please don't come after me. And enjoy.

Summary:

Jim Kirk is captured by an unknown species and he has no idea where he is but he makes some unexpected discoveries in there and make some new friends and meets some old ones.

Warning: There will be mention of torture (I mean guys get use to it), and blood.

Part 2 new revealation

Jim's pov

So it's been a few hours and she just went to sleep.

Ok, now I am getting impatient. I want to ask her Questions... alot of them

Like how did she get here and how long has she been here. Honestly the crazy part is that the crazy fucking no mouth people didn't come here.

The door creeks open.

"Shit I spoke to soon" jim says out loud.

They come near Jim and drag him out of the cell. He saw Emily stir awake and look at him. A few more came in and stood beside Emily. Jim really didn't want to know what they were going to do to her.

They drag him out of the cell. And took him to the torture room as Jim started calling it.

They started to torture him. While he is being tortured. He likes to think about his family and crew. He thinks about those awesome chess games with Spock. And bones screaming at him for getting that paper cut. Hehe. He laughed at there last one.

He sreamed in pain when they cut into his skin.

"Fuck you" he sreamed at them. They didn't even budge.

He remembered how Uhura would be screaming at him when she would be learning to perfect the Klingon after their last in counter with them. And when sulu and checkov playing rock, paper,scissors when they would get board of just sitting on their chairs looking at scans. And who can forget Scotty. Poor guy was always screaming at keenser to not mess up the warp core and kill us all. And Carol he would think of her when he was alone cause he loved her and didn't think of her when he getting tortured.

When They were done with him and they draged him back to the cell.

When he got back there he saw Emily with a few tears in her eyes.

She immediately wiped them and looked down of her lap.

Jim didn't ask Any questions about what happened to her.

He sat down and waited for her to speak. After a while she finally said

" Your pretty brave. I like that but they don't. They want to see u scream in pain " she paused for a moment " don't talk back at them and scream sometimes. They let u go quicker "

Jim just froze for a moment. How does she know all that he thought to himself. He knew he had to ask her now.

"Look I didn't want to ask u but how long have to been hear for "

"Five years" she said

Damn that took him off guard five years Jim couldn't think of being here for a month and she has been here for 5 years.

"Ok... And how did u get here" Jim asked.

She looked down. Idiot Jim thought to himself. she clearly doesn't want to answer that and then why did u say that.

" I don't want to... But something tells me that I can trust you " Emily replied.

Jim felt good that she was starting to trust him

" I... Am from a family called the Richards. We are family of blood and we don't accept people who are not our own " she paused.

Jim knew she was fighting with herself to tell him.

" Hey hey u don't have to tell me if u don't want to okey... "

Emily smiled "no I want to so I will."

Jim nodded

"I.... My mother had a one night stand with someone making me a not so pure daughter and for that reason my father hated me and my mother was relatively normal compared to my father. I had many siblings but the ones that treated me normally were my older brother John and my other sister kira. I don't know what had gotten into them but my parents decided to sacrifice me to the black sea and kill me to make the bloodline pure again."

Jim was shocked

"Anyway I will continue so they just said that they were gonna take me to a vacation place and since my parents had never treated me like their own I thought they were going to and as u can y see that didn't go so well and ended up going and before they were going to sacrifice me my sister kira gave me an oxygen mask and told me to wear it as soon as I got into the water I thought she had gone crazy but that's what ended up having my life and I ended up on shore where these people captured me and tortured me for 5 years"

Jim could not believe his ears. He didn't know what to say.

Alas he said

"I am so sorry"

"Ehhh... I have gotten used to it" Emily said.

Jim looked down.

“Gilmore Girls;” The Sounds of Starry Hollow

Gilmore Girls, an iconic (and my personal favorite) feel-good television series, follows the story of mother-daughter duo Lorelei and Rory navigating life in Starry Hollow. IMO, this show uses sound and music in an integral way to help tell this story. From diegetic and non-diegetic transition music, down to the soundscape of Luke’s Diner, Gilmore Girls explores how sound is used effectively in television. Let's look at S1, EP1 as an example.

Season one, episode one (Pilot) introduces viewers to all of our major characters, including; Lorelei, Rory, Sookie, Emily and Richard, Luke, Lane, Dean. To start the episode off, we find out that Rory gets accepted into Chilton, an elite private school nearby. Lorelei can’t afford to pay Rory’s deposit fees, which would tragically hinder her acceptance. Lorelei goes to her parents, with whom she has a toxic relationship, and asks them to loan her the money for Rory’s new school. They agree, on the terms that the Gilmore duo come over for weekly dinners. Meanwhile, Rory and Lane are dealing with the throws of public high school and more importantly, boys. Lane goes on a date her parents set up, while Rory meets Dean, a handsome new kid who clearly has a major crush on her. With love and money on the brain, Lorelei and Rory get into a fight about Chilton, and it comes to a head whilst at their newly instated family dinner. They eventually make up, and come to the conclusion that being on the same side is better than not.

Now that you’re caught up on what happened in the episode, let's take a deeper dive into how all that happened, thanks to the music and sound designers. Starting with an instance of diegetic music, when Rory and Lorelei enter Richard and Emily Gilmore’s (Lorelei’s parents) home for their incredibly awkward family dinner, minutes 35-40. There is a soft yet regal classical tune spewing itself from somewhere inside the home that the characters are keenly aware of. This song, fluttery and light, operates in direct contrast to the emotion of the scene. As Lorelei and her mother fight, as Rory explores passive aggression, and as Richard refuses to engage in any sort of emotional battle, this song plays in the background. It’s gentleness twists the knife of toxicity even harder to the left, and gives the audience a means of experiencing just how awkward and awful this dinner was for the characters. The pure, unfiltered, contrast between this music choice and the emotion of the scene is enough to make even the most sociable viewers uncomfy.

If diegetic music isn’t your thing, don’t worry, “Gilmore Girls” also uses non-diegetic sounds to help tell this charming small-town story. For example, between minutes 17 and 18, we see Lorelei and Sookie sitting on Lorelei’s front porch, sharing a glass of wine, some girl talk, and most importantly discussing how Lorelei was going to get the money to pay for Chilton. As a simple backtrack to this scene, we hear the soothing sound of evening wind and soft chirps of autumn crickets. This sound is something that we’ve all heard before, it’s something that we all have memories attached to. We subscribe to it, we understand it, we relate to it. Not only do we relate to it, but it helps us, as viewers, relate to Lorelei. By using this sound, we can easier place ourselves into the world that is Starry Hollow, and can more effectively understand Lorelei’s situation. Using sounds like this helps to draw viewers into the heartfelt comedy that is “Gilmore Girls,” and makes the problems and difficulties the characters face seem more relatable.

As my last, and arguably most influential example of how sound is an impactful storytelling element in “Gilmore Girls,” I have to bring the main theme of the show into discussion. Written and performed by Carol King, “Where You Lead” is, IMO, the most perfect introductory song to ever accompany a TV show. In a word, it’s iconic. This piece of non-diegetic music has become the ultimate musical symbol of this television series. Almost every fan of the show I’ve had the privilege of meeting knows every word, and even non-fans recognize this song as “the theme from that show!” Hearing this song puts me, and other viewers alike, immediately into the Gilmore world. It’s like a musical gateway into Starry Hollow. This song, paired with the beginning clips of our most beloved characters, provides viewers with this immediate intimate connection and launches them into the lives of these characters. It makes them real, and we see ourselves in them. And it’s fun! Because we’re allowed to just have fun things sometimes!

All in all, season 1, episode 1 (Pilot) of “Gilmore Girls” uses all different types of sound and music to convey meaning, and to tell the fascinating and quirky story of these women, all over a cup of Luke’s Diner coffee. Comment questions, ideas, and thoughts below. Stay tuned for more!

A Behind The Scenes Look At Sunset Beach

Soap Opera Weekly Magazine, 1998

There is a friendly feeling that permeates the Sunset Beach set, one that makes you feel at ease the moment you enter the NBC studio in Burbank,Calif.

"Sunset Beach" is one of the happiest sets I've ever worked on," Gordon Thompson (A.J.) concurs. "It's wonderful being back at the same studio with the same show initials, same dressing room, same crew for the most part (Thompson played Santa Barbara's Mason Capwell). The show itself has a wonderfully optimistic quality. So much so I think of it as The Little Engine that Could."

It's about 10 a.m., as the show's publicist, Jonathan Zaleski, guides this SOAP OPERA WEEKLY reporter through the hallways leading to the soundstage. A man in a hurry, Clive Robertson (Ben/ex-Derek Evans), with script in hand, sprints toward us heading to the set. "Hello," he says with a smile. Is he a good twin or a bad twin at the moment? "I'm not sure!" he jokes.

In the directors' team office, Barbara Roche, who shares stage manager duties with Shannon Mason, is hard at work. Roche arrived at the studio at about 6:15 on this particular day. "Shannon and I take turns with the early morning shift," Roche says. "We have to be in prior to the first makeup call. There are dressing rooms to be opened, prep work for that day's scripts, marking cues and checking things."

Around 7:30, the director (today it's Peter Brinckerhoff) "walks the stage" with the stage manager and members of other key departments. Dry blocking (when the specific camera moves for the actors are set) begins at 8.

"The stage managers share the day, relieving each other at certain points," Roche explains. "There are some scenes we can do on our own. That way, we're leapfrogging each other all day. If it's a scene at the disco or the hospital involving a lot of people, then we'll both probably be on the floor."

Tomorrow is a location day at Seal Beach, which doubles for Sunset Beach. "Because this show does so many remotes, we shoot simultaneously here in the studio," Roche adds. "Shannon will be down at the beach with another stage manager, and I'll be here with another person to work with me."

Stopping off in the hair and makeup department, I chat with head makeup artist Gail Katz, who's already been on the job for several hours. "We generally lose our actors between 8 and 9, so we pretty much have to have them ready by 8. Once they start dry blocking, the director has the option of keeping them there on the stage until they're set to tape at 9."

Sherri Saum (Vanessa) was the first customer of the day, which meant applying those hideous Martin's Syndrome lesions over half of her face as well as her arm. "Yeah, you missed 'lumpy-bumpy,' as we affectionately call her," Katz says with a laugh. "We had an early morning call - 6:45 - for Sherri to be camera-ready, including dry blocking. We had to schedule in that extra 45 minutes for the bumps - in additional to her regular makeup and hair - to give us some lead time."

Katz credits Academy Award-winning special effects artist Matthew Mungle with sculpting the actual prosthetics used to create the Martin's Syndrome look for Vanessa and her mother, Lena. "He's a fabulous artist, absolutely brilliant," she raves, "and a delightful man to work with."

Later, Saum tells us how it feels to be in that chair while the "bumps" are being applied to her face. "Usually, I try not to look in the mirror," she says. "But it's getting so commonplace, because I have to deal with it, every single day that I'm here. I try not to concentrate on it, though. I just like the time to go as quickly as possible."

What are the challenges this particular day for hairstylist Kimberly Spiteri? "Being interviewed," she teases. Spiteri's daily duties include "every-thing from cutting to coloring. We take care of all our actors' hair-care services. For us, it works out much better, because that way we can keep track of the continuity of their hair, as opposed to having them go out to a salon and coming back with something that might not be right for what we're working on at the time."

Most of the women spend about 45 minutes in Spiteri's chair. Sam Behrens (Gregory), though, doesn't even bother sitting down. "He actually takes care of his own hair," she notes. "He comes in and we hand him a brush and the products he likes right now - one is Bumble & Bumble Styling Creme, the other is a vanilla-scented hair spray by Cinema Secrets."

While Spiteri combs out the tresses of Cristi Ellen Harris (Emily), the young actress tells us she's a good friend of Richard Biggs (ex-Marcus Hunter, Days of Our Lives), whom she met while he was teaching acting classes. "He always told me that the one thing I needed was to get a soap," she says, "that it was the best training anybody could ever have." Did she call Biggs and tell him she got the job on Sunset? "The same day," she says. "He told me to be honest, be real, just do the work and have fun with it."

"My favorite part of the day is hair and makeup, because I love having my hair and face worked on," Shawn Batten (Sara) shares. "It relaxes me. I could sit there all day long!"

Batten had an 8 a.m. fitting with Sunset's costume designer Chic Gennarelli. "We're doing a change of look for Sara," he explains. "It's her character's transition from Washington to Sunset Beach, so the new emphasis will be on casual outfits."

According to Gennarelli, the show's costumes need to be "very colorful, sexy, featuring a lot of bareness. It's an Aaron Spelling show combined with a place called Sunset Beach, where the sun always shines and it never gets cold. We're doing a lot of beachy stuff now that El Nino's over and the warm weather is here."

Polaroids are taken of the 10 outfits Batten tries on and then presented to supervising producer Lisa Hesser in her second-floor office. "Out of those 10, we picked two because of the color considerations," Gennarelli says. "You have to look at what the other characters are wearing as well as the set decorations. So Lisa made a decision as to which outfits she liked best. Then I accessorize them for today's show and put Shawn into hair and makeup. The other eight outfits will be utilized for future episodes."

In an upstairs office, David Levinson, assistant to the executive producer, tacks an SPW clipping of Kathleen Noone's (Bette) Applause, Applause to the show's bulletin board. In an inner office, John Fritz, who doubles as assistant to associate producer Debbie Bachtell-O'Sullivan and director of Sunset's fan club, finishes up the club's first newsletter (to be issued quarterly).

Back downstairs, we pay a visit to "the clubhouse" - the dressing room of on- and offscreen best buds Timothy Adams and Jason George (Casey and Michael). Their highly publicized wall collage (featuring everything from pictures of themselves to a photo of Raquel Welch) is growing in size, thanks to contributions from viewers - mostly women. "It's very cool," says George. "It's about time we sent out another call to the fans for pictures, because we intend to fill this entire wall."

It's nonstop banter between these two. "We screw around a lot on the set, but our focus is always there when taping begins," George says. "We can be in the middle of a laugh and when the countdown starts, we'll go right into the scene."

Earlier, Adams had been razzing George about his impromptu tap dance to Shuffle Off to Buffalo on the set. "Actually, I prefer when he does the number in his construction boots," Adams quips. "The aesthetics of that are just incomparable."

Out in the hall, John Martin and Carol Potter (Hank and Joan) are winding their way toward the stage. They certainly are youthful-looking parents of grown children. "My dad watches the show, and he called me and asked, 'How did you get two such beautiful daughters?'" Martin explains with a laugh. "I don't know, but I'm also tempted to ad-lib a line to the girls like 'kiss Daddy."

Taping is proceeding at a steady clip under Brinckerhoff's direction. "It looks like we'll wrap at 6:30, which is an ideal time for us," reports stage manager Roche. "We like to have about a 12-hour day in the house."

Just another day at the Beach.

Clean your rooms and pick you stuff up because parents are coming to Lima Heights! September 16th-21st there will be no classes as parents will be visiting our campus. So mind your manners and remember, you’re representing the school to these esteemed guests. Additionally, there will be no classes while parents are visiting.  

There are things prepared for Parents to enjoy and partake in on campus such as:  

Monday - Tours of campus at 9am, 12pm, and 2pm. 

Tuesday - Lecture from Sue and Will to explain the graduation requirements, presentation expectations, etc for parents - 2-4pm 

Wednesday- Glee Performance for Parents - 5pm 

Thursday - Special Rival Football Game at 7pm complete with tailgating with punch, hot dogs, hamburgers, potato salad, corn on the cob, bread and desserts. 

Friday - Family Dinner in the Great Hall. Family style chicken, fish, potatoes, rice, salad, mixed veggies and rolls, 6-8pm

Parents are allowed on campus to visit their children, however, then much be staying off campus. Students with off campus privileges may go into town with their families, though must still follow curfew. Students who are eligible may go off campus with their parents without an additional escort.

Rules: 

Curfew rules and escort rules will stand for all students. 

Parents/siblings 18 years or older are allowed to visit - no minors are allowed.

Parents + their submissives are allowed 

Parents are allowed on campus to visit and to see everything, but they must stay overnight in town. Hotels in town are promoting discounts for parents of institute students. 

Parents being here does not mean students will get away with poor behavior choices, punishments will still stand if earned.

Note

Hey! I read that you find Friends relatable now that you're older. How is the show relatable to you? Is it specific to your generation or to people your age? Because I don't think any of the friends' lives are relatable. In particular, the fact that they're always in relationships, or hooking with random people they meet wherever, is extremely weird to me. And let's not speak of how most of them have great jobs and no college degree or higher schooling... Anyway, I'd love to read your thoughts!

Okay, so I just want address a couple of your points before I get into how/why I find the series relatable. So, first of all this part:

First of all, I don’t think that the characters on Friends date or hook up or have relationships any more than characters on any other television series out there. So many shows have their characters dating lots, sustaining long-term relationship etc. Also, I think that while, yes, all the characters did have relationships and hook ups, it wasn’t as constant or as prevalent as your statement implies. Let’s look at the characters individually.

Joey - probably the most sexually active of the group but this is also a big part of his character (similarly to, say, Barney Stinson). Joey does frequently hook up with women because he’s not interested in a long-term relationship, he just enjoys the brief, no-strings-attached intimacy of one-night stands but I don’t find his promiscuity to be unbelievable, especially since it’s an organic part of his characterisation. I also don’t recall him ever hooking up with a random person?

Chandler - Chandler spends most of Seasons 1 and 2 either single or with Janice. If I recall correctly, he only briefly dates a couple of women other than Janice in those seasons. He spends half of Season 3 with Janice and the other half single. In Season 4 he briefly dates Kathy and then at the end of the season he hooks up with Monica and, as we know, the rest is history and he spends the rest of the series in a committed relationship. Again, I don’t really see this as unrealistic? Chandler has two serious relationships and a third which never really gets off the ground and he casually dates a few women, and this is within the time span of about four or five years. That seems pretty normal to me, especially within the landscape of 90s television, which often portrayed young adults dating around.

Ross - Ross actually dates quite a lot, we see him with many casual love interests, however, as with Joey, I feel like this suits his character. Ross is actually a serial monogamist, he’s hopelessly in love with love and so I find it really in-character that he would date lots in order to find his ideal partner. Again, this is very keeping with 90s culture of dating around. And, of course, Ross has three long-term/serious relationships (Carol, Rachel and Emily) and this is over a ten year time-span, which again, doesn’t seem like a huge amount of romantic developments.

Rachel - Rachel probably dates the least of the characters. She leaves Barry, who is implied to be her only long-term relationship, at the beginning of Season 1 and then has her “fling” with Paolo, which was more about her exploring an exciting and sexual relationship which she hadn’t experienced before. She then spends Seasons 2 and 3 pining after and then involved with Ross, only briefly dating Mark post-Ross. In Season 4 she has her crush on Joshua, which doesn’t go anywhere. Her only other “serious” relationship is with Tagg in Season 7 and other than that, she doesn’t really date that often.

Monica - single for most of Season 1 with only a couple of casual dating relationships, Monica spends most of Season 2 with Richard and then the majority of Season 3 single, until her short relationship with Pete. She’s single for all of Season 4 until she hooks up with Chandler, and then she’s in a committed relationship with him until the end of the series.

Phoebe - Phoebe dates a lot but again, I don’t necessarily find that unrealistic? Like Joey, she doesn’t seem to want or need a long-term partner (until she meets Mike) and she’s happy to just casually date around. At the risk of sounding repetitive, this once again (to me) ties in nicely with 90s dating culture and I think it suits her character. However, I do find her relationship with Mike rushed and it did very much feel like she was shoe-horned into the relationship by writers who seemed afraid of having a female character end the show single. That being said, I do find her and Mike sweet.

So yeah, I’m not sure if it’s a personal thing or a generational thing but I never felt that the romantic relationships and dating habits of the characters felt unrealistic. If anything, I think each of the character’s dating habits and relationship organically tie into their characterisation.

Now, the next part I want to address:

“And let’s not speak of how most of them have great jobs and no college degree or higher schooling…”

This isn’t completely accurate.

Ross and Chandler both attended college (this is how they met, they were college roommates) and Ross has a PhD, so he definitely completed higher education. While it’s not wholly realistic that Ross would have a PhD and a high-paying job at the Museum of Natural Science at the age of twenty-seven (his age in the first season) it not entirely inconceivable, especially in the early 90s when a college degree actually did guarantee one a job and the job market was much better than it is these days.

Chandler completes college and then works in the same job for several years before receiving a promotion, which does come with an adequate pay rise, but again, he had to slog it out in a cubicle for at least four or five years before receiving said promotion, which he did so at about age twenty-seven, which seems pretty realistic, especially for the 90s. He then works at this job for the next several years, making solid money, before quitting to pursue a job which he’s passionate about. He completes an internship at an ad company and is then offered a more senior position due to his age and experience. I think this is all pretty realistic.

Rachel at least started college (she mentions in a Thanksgiving flashback that she’s taking psychology because the parking’s closer to the building) and she ends up having to work as a waitress for several years because of her lack of job experience, not exactly a great or high-paying job. Her lucking into the job at Bloomingdale’s is a little unrealistic, but she does start at a lower-level position (an assistant) before being moved to personal shopping, which she mentions is a step down for her. She interviews for and obtains the Ralph Lauren position based off her previous experience at Bloomingdale’s and is promoted after being there for a couple of years, again, a fairly realistic trajectory for her. I think Rachel’s work situation is perhaps the least realistic, given that a lot of it rests on luck, but I don’t think it’s completely unbelievable.

We have to assume that Monica went to culinary school, given that she’s a professional chef. It’s not unrealistic or unbelievable that she would be working as a Sous Chef at the age of twenty-six, especially in the 90s. She then loses her job and is forced to work at the demeaning and low-paying diner for over a year, before finally being given the chance to run her own kitchen, where she stays for several years, before being head hunted into a better-paying job when she’s in her early 30s, a realistic move for her, given her experience.

Joey and Phoebe are the only two who are explicitly stated to not have completed college (and in Phoebe’s case high school) but neither initially have particularly demanding or high-paying jobs. Phoebe works as a masseuse, for which she would have needed to complete a certificate or diploma in massage therapy, which she easily could have done in her early twenties. She appears to make enough to live on and doesn’t seem to want a different or higher-paying job and it is mentioned that she doesn’t make as much money as some of the others. And Joey spends so much time on the show unemployed or working odd-jobs in-between auditions, only really starting to get good/steady work towards the end of the series, so I think his career is pretty realistic and an accurate portrayal of how sometimes breaking into an acting career is about right place, right time.

Wow, that got long. Let’s get back to your actual question, of how/why I find Friends relatable.

It’s more little things that I found relatable as I got older. Things such as wanting to work a job I was passionate about (Chandler’s dilemma in Season 1 and again in Season 9), not having a plan for my life (Rachel in Season 1), going against my parents wishes for my career (Joey), having overly-critical parents (Monica) etc. Even smaller things, such as using sarcasm to cover childhood trauma (Chandler) or Monica’s OCD or Rachel always crying. These things made the characters real and relatable to me, even if the world they live in isn’t always completely realistic (their apartments, for example. Even in the 90s Monica wouldn’t have been able to afford that apartment, even with rent control!)
