Book 7: An Early Teaser
Like, extremely early because it won't be done this year. I fell in love with this piece, and literally no one asked for it, but I'm posting it here anyway because I've been thinking about it all freaking day, so you're welcome.
And here's some delicious audio to pair nicely with it because I love you fuckers. ♥
(Hancock is narrator here.)
It had been four fucking hours. I paced for so long in the hallway, you'd think I woulda walked a trench into the floor.
I stopped one of the doctors that finally appeared in the desolate hallway. "Hey, do you know how long my wife is gonna be in recovery?"
He sighed sharply and showed me the name on his clipboard. "Is this her name?"
It read, "Tracy Sutterfield."
"No, no, that's not her."
"All right, then you'll have to wait until your wife's assigned doctor checks on her."
"That's just it -- the doc assigned to her hasn't come back yet. He disappeared with her through this door and they've been in there for hours."
"Yes, well, the process could take... Wait... Was she the rarity?"
"Yeah, the glowing one."
His eyes darkened and he clammed up real quick. "I'm sorry, but I cannot discuss it with you further. You'll have to wait on her assigned doctor." He rushed into a room down the hall.
I squinted at him as he disappeared. That was offsetting.
Finally, Dr. Rivera emerged from Gwen's room, clipboard in hand. His face was solemn but calm. He spoke softly.
"John, your wife did not survive the process."
It was like suddenly being yanked by the ankles into the deepest, darkest abyss while the weight of a million rocks pressed down on me.
"Wh-What? How? ... Why? What did you do to her?" I didn't recognize the meek voice that came outta me.
"We administered the chemical to reduce the glowing, and, in layman's terms, her body fought into exhaustion. Her nervous system and immune system were affected beyond repair. We did everything we could."
I leaned against the wall for support. "This can't be happening... She was perfectly healthy before she went in..."
"'Perfectly healthy' is a stretch, but, again, it's like we discussed before. Yes, underlying medical conditions can cause the procedure to fail invariably, but everyone reacts differently to the chemical."
I was tunnel-focused on the doctor's face. "Wh-Where is she? I need to... see for myself..."
"I'm afraid that's not possible. We've already taken her to the cremation center."
"You what?!"
"The chemical is dangerous and must be kept in a contained space. A decomposing body with the chemical inside could release a gas that is hazardous to all who stand within a ten foot radius --"
I grabbed the doctor by the collar. "If you value your life, you'll keep my wife out of your goddamn incinerator."
"S-Stop! Unhand me!"
"Or what? I got nothin' left to live for."
He quickly took a small remote out of his pocket and pressed a button. Yellow caution lights appeared overhead and an automated voice sounded through the speakers.
"Feral alert in operation chamber. Feral alert in operation chamber."
I slammed the doctor up against the wall. "Turn it off, now, or I'll kill you, you son of a bitch."
With wide eyes, he tossed the remote to the side. The doctor's body trembled against my hands with fear, even in his act of rebelliousness. Other doctors were coming out of the operation rooms and scanned the hallway.
I let go of the doctor and made a leap for the remote on the floor. I grabbed it and shoved it in my pocket while pursued by the eggheads and two security guards with those fucking control poles in hand. I had to find a place to lay low before the whole damn facility was after me.
I didn't believe that Gwen was dead. I couldn't. I wouldn't.
I turned the corner and continued my mad dash down the hall, and someone shouted at me. "Hey, wait!"
I looked over my shoulder and there was a ghoul poking their head out from behind a loose metal panel on the wall.
"Over here!" she shouted.
I turned on my heel and slipped behind the panel quickly.
She placed the panel back on the wall. She was quick and quiet, and the panel fit perfectly in place on her first try. She had done this before -- who knew how many times. She grabbed me by the sleeve and dragged me with her between the metal casing of the walls.
It was a tight fit. Pipes and wires were connected to the walls, and it was hard to get past them without turnin' your body in all manner of shapes.
After a few minutes of traveling between the walls, she removed another metal panel where she confidently stepped into a room without looking both ways. So I stepped into the room behind her, assumin' there was no danger.
Maybe there wasn't any danger, but what I saw in the room was enough to make my stomach turn.
Ghouls of all shapes and sizes sat in the room with makeshift beds lying across the floor and on top of the desks and tables. The floor was covered in boxes, wrappers, and other bits of garbage. There were buckets of shit and piss in the far corner, and everyone reeked of body odor.
Some of these ghouls were horribly misshapen -- a noticeably crooked spine or an extra, useless arm -- or had other abnormalities such as a missing eye or deep incision scars. Most of them wore hospital gowns.
The ghoul that led me to this band of misfits said, "I know where your wife is."

Five vomit blood at Gurgaon restaurant after consuming mouth freshener
Tumblr media
Five individuals fell ill after consuming mouth freshener at a café in Gurugram. They experienced symptoms including blood vomiting and reported cuts on their tongues following ingestion of the mouth freshener, according to sources. Ankit Kumar, accompanied by his wife and friends, patronized Laforestta café in Gurugram on March 2.
Kumar docum
ented the distressing scene, capturing individuals writhing in pain. The viral footage depicts a woman in visible agony, mouth agape in a scream, while a man can be seen vomiting on the floor. Another woman is observed attempting to alleviate the burning sensation on her tongue by applying ice.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety and quality of food products served at the café, prompting authorities to investigate the matter. Such occurrences underscore the importance of stringent quality control measures and adherence to food safety regulations in food establishments to prevent such health hazards.
As the investigation unfolds, authorities aim to identify the root cause of the incident and take appropriate action to prevent similar occurrences in the future. Meanwhile, patrons are advised to exercise caution when consuming food items and report any adverse reactions promptly to ensure public health and safety.
According to the individual who lodged the complaint, their ordeal began after they had finished their dinner when a waiter served them mouth freshener. Shortly thereafter, their health rapidly deteriorated, prompting their urgent hospitalization. Disturbingly, the staff at the restaurant had absconded by the time medical assistance was sought, further complicating the situation, he asserted.
Ankit Kumar, who took charge of reporting the incident to the authorities, recounted, “I showed the mouth freshener packet to a doctor, who identified it as dry ice. The doctor cautioned that dry ice contains acid, posing a severe threat that could potentially result in fatalities.” The revelation underscores the gravity of the situation and the urgency of the medical response required.
Reports indicate that the victims immediately experienced a burning sensation in their mouths, followed by uncontrollable vomiting. Despite attempts to alleviate their discomfort, including cooling measures, their condition did not improve. The severity of the symptoms underscores the hazardous nature of the substance ingested.
Of the five affected individuals, two are currently in critical condition, underscoring the seriousness of the incident. The police have initiated legal proceedings against the restaurant owner in accordance with the victims’ complaints, signaling a proactive response to hold accountable those responsible for the harm inflicted.
Dry ice, known for its extreme cold temperature, can pose significant risks if mishandled. Direct contact with the skin can result in frostbite, highlighting the importance of proper handling and storage procedures to mitigate potential dangers.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the paramount importance of stringent safety measures and vigilance in the food industry to safeguard public health. Authorities are urged to conduct a thorough investigation to ascertain accountability and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

Wife, Handle with Caution. I’m loving this show. Ayase Haruka kicks ass. It’s great to see a show where women help and support each other instead of competing. A show that talks about stepping outside the narrow labels society imposes on women. And Nishijima Hidetoshi is charming. Can’t wait to watch the rest of the episodes.
