Chapter 17 Commentary
I think it was v fun to write Ray POV cooking a meal vs. Soleil POV cooking a meal! Like :) Soleil's is so drawn-out and over-anxious and detailed /because/ he's over-anxious. he's never certain about if he's done a good job (and is v concerned about that) until he gets outside approval and it Shows. Ray is not nearly as stressed or distressed about the cooking itself and so I hope it was conveyed the different vibes.
Emily is not as privy to Soleil's trauma but she knows something is Up. She's also not close enough to him to ask (either to understand more or offer support) which leads to her often being like, hm. Well, moving on. When smth is obvs Up and she doesn't want to pry or linger. I think she's the type of chara to not like, try and Guess what's up either. I have other charas who might try and extrapolate based on reactions but i genuinely think Emily's like, kay well, he'll tell me or he won't.
soleil has not been the biggest fan of wearing turtlenecks for a While. idt i like? put that in the fic until this point, he just. doesn't wear them if he can help it. soleil has a Thing about saying he doesn't like something if it could be the Wrong opinion or hurt someone else's feelings or get Him hurt or make him look ungrateful etc, and this will :) keep coming up in the fic :)
same w/ Soleil's ankle pain from last chapter. Not only would he not Say anything, his internal narration doesn't make mention of it either, because what would be the point or recognizing it? It's not like anything would change so he should just do his best to work around it.
Though I think he Does consciously clock that he doesn't like the turtlenecks and consciously works around it (like making sure he has enough of his other shirts so he doesn't have to wear them). while w/ his pain, bc he's so used to it, it doesn't consciously register--especially because he's used to always being in pain and before he can think too much about it, he's already resigned to the fact that it's going to hurt for a while bc he stood too much. but eventually it'll go back to hurting a little less. And so he's a little more careful (bc it's not like he /wants/ to be in more pain) but it's a routine and unconscious kind of adjustment, one that doesn't prompt dwelling in his POV chapters.
It was unintentional repeating "in a move" etc during the sex scene but I really liked that they each got their own separate thing.
I do waffle every time about including a sex scene, or if maybe i should add a content (not trigger) warning if there's going to be one that ch. i do try and keep them on the shorter side tho, and i also tend to think that people could just skip it if they didn't want to read?
LOL ALSO, unintentionally :) ray running his hand through each of his partners' hair during the sex scene mirroring earlier
Actually: that is one of the main reasons I'm deciding to keep the smut in the chapter. I'd started drafting up a separate work to put it in but!! I think it's fun that there are parallels in their relationships + behaviors in and out of sex, plus it's an important part of their connection/dynamic and i hope/don't think it's too out of place to include it
i think it's also just. good setup for future plotlines re: sex can be fun and teasing and enjoyable and entirely consensual, double re: soleil's past trauma [will continue to waffle about this]
me setting up to post and realizing one more. that i have forgotten a title for the ch (i have. One ch title planned as of rn, everything else is just OH FUCK, i forgot :) vibes As I'm posting)

The hot summer sun cast a warm glow over the privileged patrons of the Sunset Valley Country Club. The Darling sisters, growing like weeds every day, splashed in the pool, blissfully unaware of the silent disapproval of onlookers.
Tumblr media
Morgana Wolff gazed with adoration, as the heavily pregnant Agnes Darling basked in the warm rays of the sun. "Goodness Agnes, you're just glowing." She admired.
"Oh, quit it, you!" Agnes scoffed.
"No, I mean it!" Morgana added. "Your complexion looks flawless, and that hair of yours is so shiny and bouncy. Must be those vitamins you've been taking."
Tumblr media
Agnes's mind flashed back to a memory of some old wives' tale Bianca Crumplebottom had shared with her the last time the Crumplebottom Sisters paid a visit:
"Blossoming in the bottom of the belly, a daughter spends her time mimicking her mother's actions, and thieving her of her divine beauty. Yet, a son nestled within, enchants his mother with radiant grace."
"Well it's because I'm having a boy, if you believe in nonsense." Agnes replied with an irritable eyeroll.
Tumblr media
"That's absurd, darling. You were gorgeous through all your pregnancies." She grinned. Morgana had always been a loyal friend to Agnes, but it was when Agnes was with child, that a particular instinct within Morgana kicked in. She protected Agnes fiercely, especially during the day when Erik was away at work, faithfully concealing her own longing for the maternal bliss Agnes experienced.
Tumblr media
Agnes dismissed the old wives' tales as archaic and superstitious. The gender of her child held no importance to her; life had already given her everything she could ever want.
Tumblr media
As anticipation grew, Agnes delved into nesting, transforming her makeshift painting studio and home office into a charming little nursery adorned with sunny shades of yellow.
Tumblr media
There were various reactions elicited upon announcing the impending arrival of the third Darling child, though the predominant sentiments were ones of joy and support.
Tumblr media
...Mostly. With Agnes and Erik dedicating so much of their time to preparing for the new baby, the soon-to-be Darling middle child was left to her own devices, seeking life-long attention from the lurking shadows of her mind...

Anyone else think it's weird that Snake is born on March 15th (Ides of March), while that's when we get our first spoilers for ch210, and now we have the rest of the ch210 spoilers on St. Patrick's Day? The saint credited with getting rid of all the snakes in Ireland....
March 17 is also the day our earl officially gains the title of earl.

Wendy's parents looked at the forest differently. They both had a tendency to go still and quiet when they were surrounded by trees, but that was where the similarity ended. Her father looked at the forest with Knowing, and her mother looked with Seeking.
Her father was a lumberjack. Her father was a Corduroy. He stood in the forest like he was a tree himself: still, tall, skin rough like bark, rooted to the spot by six generations. Wendy didn't know why "family trees" were illustrated as branches and leaves. They were root systems; your ancestors were buried deep below your feet, and their bony grips on your ankles slowly pulled you down into the dirt too.
Her father looked at the trees like he already knew every secret they held—every ancient lightning scar, every squirrel love affair, every bird with too many eyes and every eye in search of a bird. If you asked him where the Hide Behind was, he'd point at a tree without hesitation, and then he'd tell you to stop staring.
That was the thing with him: stop staring. He knew everything about the forest, except the things he didn't, and the things he didn't know he didn't want to know—and he didn't want his children to know them, either.
When her mother stood in the woods, eyes upturned, quaking like an aspen, she was like a pilgrim in a cathedral, standing weary and rapturous in the nave and gazing up at the stained glass windows. In later years, she'd seemed like a pilgrim who'd just realized she'd walked into the wrong god's church.
Aspens weren't native to Gravity Falls. You found them around Portland.
Her mother always wanted to know more, but was dissatisfied with the things she knew. She talked about things her husband didn't and asked about things he wouldn't. Wendy didn't think she was ever happy with the things she found out.
One of Wendy's last memories of her mother was of seeing her standing on the overgrown path to the old, abandoned Corduroy family cabin in the woods. Staring at it like it terrified her, but like she had some question she couldn't leave without asking it.
Her father, knowing what he knew and refusing to seek more; her mother, always seeking but never comfortable knowing; and Wendy was somewhere in between.
Wendy had worked in the Mystery Shack long enough that she knew where its occupants were, the way she knew where her heart and lungs were. When there weren't tourists, she could hear the pipes in the morning and know Mabel was showering upstairs—it was always Mabel, everyone else in the shack either showered before Wendy arrived for work or after she'd left for the day—and she could hear the the TV through the "Employees Only" door and know from the cadence of the muffled murmurs whether it was playing an English or Spanish station; and she knew when somebody was cooking and could tell who it was based on the smell; and through the floor boards she could hear the washing machine in the cellar, but she could predict when laundry day was coming two days ahead of time because Soos had run out of white dress shirts and switched to blue.
From her post behind the cash register, she was quietly, casually aware of where everyone should be. She wondered if she got that from her mother or her father.
She did the same thing at home. From her room, she was always aware of her brothers and her father. There was a little hole in her awareness where she felt like her mother should have been. She could tell without checking where her family was, and each thud and smell and footstep and shut door confirmed her instincts. And when something was wrong, she knew.
There was something wrong in the Mystery Shack.
Time to start seeking.

Reo, Nagi, and Differences from the Main Manga
Thoughts from Episode: Nagi, chapter 17
Reo:
Tumblr media
This chapter was kind of needed for him to "abandon" his ego of becoming the best with Nagi (and we can see it sort of fading in the textbox) -- and simultaneously get rid of that growing attachment he has to Nagi. Really sad to see him say, "thank you" as if he doesn't even have the strength to break them apart himself (and he didn't)
Tumblr media
The chameleon makes its first chronological appearance so we can clearly see him start to 'adapt' his thinking and playing even though it's not fully fleshed out yet, which is exciting! I wasn't sure if that was something he made up with Shidou before, but it's hilarious to know it all started with Nagi, AGAIN. Or maybe this is the manga trying to convey that he's changing himself to help Nagi walk away lol
His inferiority complex with Nagi makes itself kind of known here, with the monologue- "Those are the words *I* wanted to say,," but was unable to...
Tumblr media
Somehow, Nagi being able to encourage Reo makes him the stronger one mentally -- which is tough for someone who subconsciously already thinks he can't go very far without Nagi skill-wise.
Poor guy... and he still has so far to go before he starts to think he can fight on his own.
Nagi:
Man, this chapter pretty much confirms that their mischaracterization and miscommunication goes both ways lol. Nagi spitefully admonishes that he isn't Reo's 'toy' when Reo flips from "wanting to be the best" to "wanting to stay together"-- These guys have such a hard time acknowledging their friendship outside of football, it's actually painful.
I can't tell if he made any sort of connection betweey 'toy' and being Reo's 'treasure'. But that's almost definitely a metaphor on Reo's part. What a lot of people misuse is that Reo calls Nagi his 'treasured possession' when I really, truly don't think he meant viewing Nagi as a literal object. But how else do you expect a rich boy who's only been shown love through material things to describe something he values? *(see tags for a rant on this lol)
I do wish we'd gotten more insight into how he felt when he heard what Reo said in the moment, but this chapter was already long as it is. I do think Nagi's expressions sort of speak for themselves.
Tumblr media
I mean, he straight up looks like he's about to cry here.
I would argue that part of Nagi's promise to 'stay together' during the entrance actually includes 'believing in each other' like he says here:
Tumblr media
And if that's the case, then what did Reo's claim of abandonment mean to him? Was it that Reo didn't believe in Nagi's newfound drive to win? Or was he mad that Reo didn't believe in himself? I think it's a bit of both, but I really want to see more thoughts in the manga or from the fandom
Blue Lock vs. Episode: Nagi
So... Nagi definitely seems more angry in this chapter, right? When you revisit Ch. 76, you can see that Nagi is a lot more apologetic towards Reo
Tumblr media Tumblr media
( Here you see him lament not growing alongside Reo, but fired up and excited to work with Isagi)
vs. what we saw this chapter
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Nagi saying sorry and acknowledging he's changed, but looking less toward the future and more resisting the past)
Maybe this is just a difference in translations, but "I can't [am not able to] go back" feels a little different from "I won't go back" -- the former just feels like an admission (to Reo), while the latter feels a lot more confrontational, a downright refusal to go along with what Reo wants.
And that's fine, but it does reshape how I thought about Nagi, and I think it really emphasizes just how pissed he was at Reo by the end of 2nd Selection.
This reframes their interaction during U-20 tryouts for me. I originally thought it was mostly setting up Reo's chameleon style defense and Reo's internal conflict (which it is) but EpiNagi really just shows that Nagi also has a ways to go before they reunite in Manshine
Tumblr media
I think this could be the panel (from Ch. 107, 3rd Selection) where Nagi forgives Reo -- it's the point where Reo sort of shows he understands Nagi's drive to win, and that he doesn't value staying together over improving anymore. After that, they have no issues (in Nagi's eyes) so it was probably easy to imagine walking up to Reo during MC v BM and asking for his help ... but man, we still have a long way til then, and I can't wait for EpiNagi to probably prove me wrong :p
