Jon catches Lord Bolton staring at him.

Domeric/Jon Soulmate AU.

Being stared at was never a good thing for a bastard, even less so when it was a Lord doing the staring. Even less again when it was a Lord with an unsavory reputation.

Lord Bolton had been staring at Jon for the last day. Not when his father could see, maybe not when anyone else could, but Jon could feel the weight of his gaze creeping over him.

He tried his best to avoid going anywhere near Bolton, knowing enough of the horror stories of him and his House to not want to risk anything, but somehow Bolton still managed to corner him alone in the early morning hours, when Jon was going about some of his chores.

"Let me see it again." It was an order and as softly spoken as it was, Jon still shivered thinking what would happen if he disobeyed.

"What, my lord?"

Bolton's eyes narrowed. "Your soulmark."

Jon stiffened, realizing that Bolton must have seen it when Jon was sparring the other morning. It had been warm enough that most of those in the ring had taken off their tops. So used to the people around Winterfell knowing his mark, Jon hadn't thought anything about exposing it, even knowing there were Lords about.

"It's a black mark," he muttered, "it doesn't matter."

Black meaning his soulmate was dead and gone before they ever even met. Which was only a relief in that whatever Bolton thought he saw, it wasn't a match for his own mark (not that Jon was entirely sure Bolton had enough of a soul to get a soulmark).

Still, he brought steadier than they felt hands to the hem of his tunic and lifted, until his side was exposed, and the blackened soulmark that took up half the length of his torso.

Bolton made a soft noise, reaching out, but stopping before touching. There was more expression on his face than Jon had ever seen, then maybe anyone had, and while that still wasn't much, he thought he saw grief there.

"Your...no...."

"Yes," Bolton replied, with a wry tilt to his lips, "I suppose you're clever enough...he would have liked that."

Jon winced, hands falling, tunic covering him once more. He floundered over what to say. There was no protocol for a bastard meeting the Lord whose dead heir was his match.

"Domeric, wasn't it?" His voice was soft, speaking the name felt almost like a sacred act.

His soulmate. Domeric Bolton.

Jon would have been a Northern Lord's spouse, if Domeric had lived. The second most powerful Lord in the North, even.

The irony of being a Bolton when Lady Stark was always terrified of Jon's nonexistent claim as a Stark would have been amusing. He could almost imagine the fun he and his soulmate could have had at her expense.

Bolton--Lord Bolton--was watching Jon, who didn't know what part of his bittersweet thoughts might have shown on his face.

"I'll speak with Lord Stark later today."

Jon frowned. "Why? It's...it's not like...."

"You were meant to be my good son. I will not leave you here to do a servant's work and be denigrated by a Southron woman."

He almost pointed out that many of the Northerners had no problem insulting bastards, but didn't. Nothing about this made him feel comfortable contradicting Lord Bolton, or doing anything at all that might seem like backtalk.

Pursing his lips, he nodded, already thinking of how he could catch his father first and make sure he knew that Jon wanted to stay in Winterfell.

Domeric Bolton was dead, there would be nothing for Jon at the Dreadfort but ghosts, no matter how uncharacteristically moved Lord Bolton seemed.

ROOSE BOLTON

candidate for worst asoiaf character, and the competition is fierce. truly a horrific person. Thinks he's funny, makes little jokes about his treacheries and crimes that no one present has the context to understand, "happy house of harrenhal", and 'omg i can't believe you would consider breaking guest right, who would ever do that', and all that. book roose specifically.

XUE YANG

he's evil and kills like hundreds, maybe thousands of people, for like not super good reasons (like killing the person who wronged you as a child? understandable in the setting of the story. killing every single person associated with that person? perhaps a bit overkill baby). tricks a character he's obsessed with into murdering a lot of innocent people including that guy's best friend. that all being said, I love him to death like that's my special little babygirl yeah he commits atrocities but have you considered that maybe he just needs someone to love him? or even that he looked cute while committing the atrocities? but nor fr I was kinda surprised when I got to the fandom stuff and realized that there were people who really hated Xue Yang because I just felt sorry for him and wanted to pat his head or something.

Chapter Four : DreadFort

Dreadfort (Domeric is 10, Ramsay is 13) this chapter was written with little help from ProtonCoccus

The air around the Dreadfort was colder than neighboring Winterfell. For a raven to survive such cold, it must have a special bloodline. Communication using those birds ranged from two to three days to a whole moon. Sending missives to the Boltons took around five days at best, and a week at worst.

Roose Bolton sat inside his solar, freshly leeched and pale as always. It was rare for the Lord Paramount to suddenly send him a letter, detailing the potential betrothal of his son Domeric and Sansa Stark. Perhaps, the Quiet Wolf finally broke free of the Trout Wife's control, that was what he hoped.

"You called for me, Father?" inquired Domeric, having just entered the room.

"Yes. I received a letter from Lord Stark. We are to depart for Winterfell in three days' time."

"To what do we owe this visit?"

"That my son, you will discover. You have always been curious about the Northern Ruby."

His father 's words struck Domeric. He was to meet Sansa Stark, a true jewel amidst the cold climate of the land. He had hoped to one day marry her; the Flayed Men could use some Direwolf pelts.

" Will Ramsey be coming with us " Domeric asked in a low tone hoping he wasn't Ramsey was a rough playmate to play with he was cruel and harsh especially to animals.

" Yes, unfortunately " Lord Bolton mumbled knowing he couldn't leave Ramsay alone God knows what the boy would do.

" When do we depart " Domeric inquired.

" In a few days, Domeric listen to me carefully this visit must go well you must be on your best behavior " Roose firmly told his son.

" I promise but I can't say the same about Ramsay " Domeric mumbled.

" Leave your half brother to me " Roose said knowing he would have a sternly talking with that boy.

His father soon dismissed him and Domeric made his way back to his chambers with a smile on his face as he was walking back he bump into someone on the way.

Domeric looked up and noticed it was only his cruel half brother, " Ramsay "

" Brother, why are you in a rush don't tell me father realizes what a disappointment you are and has cast you aside in favor of me " Ramsay smirked.

" No, father was just telling me we leave for Winterfell in a few days " Domeric answered.

" The Starks, I hear you're married to the red wolf a beauty but her eldest sister Lyarra is considered the most beautiful lady in the north I wonder why father didn't bethroed you to her " Ramsay exclaimed.

" Father says he tried to but Lord Stark refused the betrothal " Domeric muttered.

" I could see why you aren't good enough for a beautiful lady like that, Sansa Stark is perfect for you brother " Ramsay said.

" I should pack " Domeric said and tried to walk away but Ramsay blocked his path.

" Don't walk away from me little brother " Ramsay snarled yanking his chin up harshly.

" Ramsay, stop it " Domeric whimpered.

" Make me " Ramsay challenged with a smirk as he continued to torment the little bolton.

" What's going on here " Septa Ella said making his way towards the two brother, Ramsay cursed under his breath and released his weak little brother from his hold.

"Septa Ella " Ramsay greeted with a smile.

" Are you alright Domeric " Septa Ella asked checking on the little lord.

" I'm fine " Domeric whimpered.

" We were just playing " Ramsay said.

" I don't believe that's how brother should play " Septa Ella scolded.

" I will be informing your father of this " Septa Ella informed him much to Ramsay worry knowing his father would give him another beating for acting out.

" Septa Ella but " Ramsay trailed off.

" Come along Domeric " Septa Ella said grabbing the little lord's hands with hers bringing him back to his chamber not realizing the piercing stares Ramsay sent her.

Meanwhile In Winterfell

As Lyarra was in the crypts down below staring at the statues of her lost family members the statute that really interest her was her Uncle Brandon.

Her father didn't talk much about Uncle Brandon only that he was brave and head stronger.

Lyarra eyes soon turned to the statute beside her uncle, Shaena Targaryen her uncle had married a Targaryen from what she heard two were in love and very happy with one another.

But the young dragon princess had die in childbirth giving birth to stillborn child, as the young she-wolf continued to stare at the statue for some reason she felt a connection to the woman herself.

Footsteps began to approach, Lyarra turned her head and saw her father walking towards her with a smile.

" Lya, what are you doing down here your mother been looking everywhere for you " Ned said.

" I'm sorry papa I was just curious about the crypts " Lyarra mumbled.

Ned stared at the statues of his lost brother and sister signing he missed them each passing day.

" Can you tell me more of Shaena Targaryen " Lyarra blurted out causing Ned to look at her with a sad smile on his face.

His niece was staring to look like her mother more and more each passing day which worried him, it was no doubt that Lyarra was Shaena's daughter through and through the way she would sing and play the harp like Shaena and Rhaegar would in the capital.

Through she had his brother eyes, smile and spirit, she truly was both parts of her parents a stark and a Targaryen.

" Shaena Targaryen was the princess of dragonstone the younger twin sister of Prince Rhaegar, she was fierce and kind in many ways and cared deeply about the people's welfare she loved to sword fight with her brother Rhaegar and sing and play the harp " Ned states.

" She sounds like an amazing person " Lyarra smiled.

" She was " Ned muttered looking at his sister-in-law statute with sadness in his eyes.

" Did Uncle Brandon love her " Lyarra. questioned.

" Very much your uncle adored her the two ruled Winterfell and Dragonstone for a time being "

" Mother says she was a thief that stole things that didn't belong to her, why does mother hate Aunt Shaena so much " .

" That's a story for another time now come along you'll be late to your sew lessons your mother will be furious if you miss it " Ned said ushering the curious little ice-she wolf out of the crypts.

King's Landing

As Jaime was making his way to his sister's chambers he heard moaning and grunts coming from outside.

His eyes widen in alarm and tugged at the doorknob only to realize it was locked.

Jaime knock on the door with a bang angry beginning to fill in his body.

Inside, Cersei was on her hands and knees being pounded from behind by one of her many lovers Ser Kettleblack.

She would often taking him in his bed a few times when Jaime was away on King's guard business.

" That's it pleasure your queen " Cersei moaned as the knight thrusting into her harder and fast her boobs began to bounce up and down.

" Fuck, my queen " The knight grunted as tried to hold back from spilling his seed into the Queen.

A loud knock on the door causes them to pause for a moment, " Who is it " Cersei asked with a wearily voice.

" Sweet sister may I come inside " Jaime asked from outside her chamber door.

" Not now Jaime " Cersei snarled.

Cersei eyes widened, " Should I go, my queen? " The knight asked looking at her.

" No keep fucking me " Cersei commanding some part of her wanted to let her brother in but another part of her wanted to teach him lesson for forgetting about her.

Her brother had been busy the last couples of weeks guarding her fat oaf of a husband, leaving her bed cold forcing her to find pleasure elsewhere.

The knight nodded and began to thrust back into her at a faster race, the lioness trying her best to cover her moans up.

" Who's in there with you " Jaime snarled and began to pound his fists on the door loudly.

" No one brother now go before I have you personally removed " Cersei moaned lowly.

Jaime cursed under his breath and walked away from his sister's chambers wondering if his sister was being unfaithful to him.

No she couldn't be they had made a promise "I will only love you and take you into my bed Jaime no men can make me feel the way I do about you " Cersei promised him on their sixteen nameday the first time they made love to one another.

He had made a vow too that day claiming he would relinquish his right to Casterly rock and join the king's guard so he'll never have to marry or have children.

He never wanted to wed or have a family of his own with another other woman but Cersei he had once dreamed of marrying Cersei he had brought up running away one time to Cersei but she had just laughed at him and said be practical.

Cersei carved power without it she would be nothing, she obsessed with Joffrey one day ruling the seven kingdoms and she as acting regent.

Robert wouldn't live for long not the way he was living he would soon perish one day and Joffrey would become king.

God help the seven kingdoms when that day would come knowing Joffrey as King would be a nightmare.

" Quite the nightmare. " Jaime thought

Jaime let out a sign he knew he would have to repair things with his sister hopefully she would forgive him for being distance towards him but in the end she would always forgive him.

Hopefully she would forgive him again this time around.

So a little more glimpse into the bolton family, Domeric and Ramsay

Jaime first references in the chapter don't worry he'll grow throughout the story

Rewatching season 2 and yeah the changes made to the Qarth storyline were . . . not great. Like, outside of butchering Dany's visions (where is the Red Wedding vision? Where is Ser Willem and the house with the red door? Where is RHAEGAR?), the entire logic behind Xaro Xhoan Daxos and Pyat Pree's plot to kill the Thirteen makes absolutely no sense. The Thirteen are not the sole ruling body of Qarth; in fact, they're not even *the* ruling body of Qarth, that is primarily the Pureborn, who deal with civic aspects of governance within the city. But no single group has unchallenged control over the city, so killing the Thirteen would just raise the ire of the Pureborn, the Tourmaline Brotherhood, and all the other powers that contend within the city. There was no way they would be able to get away with that and make Xaro "King" of Qarth so the whole plot just falls apart the moment they commit that scale of murder and turn the rest of the city against them.

Been thinking a lot about the women surrounding the Boltons. Either they exist to spawn more Boltons or to act as a way to show awful Ramsay is. I may or may not have started putting effort into fleshing out his mother (especially in the time he's been away from her, allowing her the peace to think of what happened to her). Aegon was a very loyal man, you knew that. So it surprised you when he told you that he wants to marry you, despite him having 2 wives already. But you were in no position to decline your conqueror’s wishes or rather, demands.

It wasn’t bad to be married to him. He was loving and sweet. Sometimes he would raise a hand but you looked past that.

His sisters were skeptical at first but later welcomed you with open arms.

Rhaenys wasn’t the friendliest at first. She feared that you would steal him and his love from her. Later when she met you she got why Aegon would want to marry you.

Visenya liked you the moment Aegon talked about you to her. She couldn’t wait to welcome you into the family.

You didn’t mind that he went from one bed to another, it just was how it was. And he didn’t mind when his sisters went into yours.

He kept you away from common people. He and his sisters were possessive and overprotective. One little rumor of you and Balerion was ready to dracarys them all.

He didn’t let you fight or ride a dragon. You had to be in the castle and always wait for him to return to you.

His biggest desire was you to give him strong and healthy children. Secretly he has always planned to put your son on the Iron Throne and make you THE Queen of the Seven Kingdoms. And no one could stop him, not even his own sisters.

𝐌𝐚𝐞𝐠𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐫𝐮𝐞𝐥

Maegor as a husband is eternal torture. He is very cruel king, like his name tells. He killed anyone who displeased him, whether it was his own nephew, the builders of the Red Keep or his wives.

You have seen how he has slaughtered his other wives like flies, only because of his suspicions. Of course how could you not when he specifically orders you to watch. Watch what could happen if you disobey him.

Everybody knew you were his favorite, he knew, you knew, his other wives knew, everyone. Maybe it’s the fact that you are the only one who has given him children, and all sons. Maybe it’s the fact how good you feel in bed, after slaughtering some innocent citizens your body is all he desires.

He is abusive mentally, physically and sexually. You sometimes just pray that he would die because of the throne.

Everyone respects you very highly, no other wife of Maegor wouldn’t dare to cross their rank, one word from you and their heads are on spike for everyone to see.

You are known as THE Queen.

You know he loves you, in his own twisted and cruel way, but he cares for you and for your children. Right?

Even if sometimes late at night laying in bed he whispers softly how he would burn his sons alive in front of you if you ever would disobey him like his other whore he just killed a few hours ago.

Why would he care? He can always make new children with you.

𝐀𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐬 𝐈𝐈 𝐓𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐲𝐞𝐧 (𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐝 𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐠)

In his youth he was everything a woman could want from a husband. He was ambitious, charming, smart, gentle and so much more.

He was protective from the beginning, you were gonna be his queen, he always had to have eyes on you. Especially near his hand, Tywin Lannister, who always gave him some kind of paranoia.

But you were loyal to your king and now husband, just like he wanted.

With years and decades he turned more into madness. You didn’t know how to help. Was it because of his father’s death? Or because of his hand, Lord Lannister? Maybe just his paranoia overal?

He was afraid of traitors and the Targaryen dynasty collapsing. He bedded you more and more to have more children to protect the succession and dynasty.

He started to take your freedom and lock you up with your children. He was gone to full madness.

One bad talk about you in the city and he burned them alive with wildfire. You remember the screams, the smell of smoke and chemicals, the smell of burning corpses. You were afraid of him.

You even thought about going to talk with Tywin Lannister but you didn’t want to get yourself or your children in any more trouble.

You suffered in silence with his madness.

𝐄𝐝𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐤

Eddard Stark was the definition of gentleman. He did everything for you and he was never cruel to you.

He knew you needed freedom and gentle love, so he gave it to you. He was never mad at you, rather he blamed others. Whoever dared to disrespect you or your rank as his wife and Lady of Winterfell got their head chopped off. You never saw them again.

He never doubted your love and loyalty, he knew he had given you anything so there is no need.

He could see you in your children’s eyes, especially in Sansa’s.

But you knew he was ready to sacrifice anything for you. His titles, his house, his children, even himself.

He was protective and kinda like a puppy or even slave for you. So you could never imagine him as a mad man who could do horrible things just to keep you.

But of course you can’t read his thoughts in his head, you can’t see the dark glimmers behind his love stuck eyes.

𝐑𝐨𝐛𝐛 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐤

Just like his father, Eddard, he is the definition of gentleman. He did anything to show off and impress you.

You two were like open lovers. Everyone knew you had something going on. The eye contacts, the touches, the sounds late at night in his room gave it all away.

Despite knowing you were loyal and loved him with all your heart he was a little delusional and paranoid. He always feared that one of the other younger lords would steal you away.

Sometimes he even suspected his own ‘half-brother’ Jon Snow. So he tried to hold you away from him as much as possible and always hinted that you were his lover and future wife.

He was never cruel towards you but his ‘enemies’ or competitions got to taste his steel blade.

He always fantasies about you. How you would get married, how you are gonna be as the Lady of Winterfell, you carrying his children and how he's gonna lock you up in the future, only for his eyes to see.

𝐓𝐲𝐰𝐢𝐧 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫

Tywin never thought he would marry again after his first wife died.

But love is love.

Tywin was very intelligent and very ambitious. He knew how to court a woman and so you fell into the lion’s claws.

He was harsh you have to say. But he never raised his hand against you.

You got along with his children well. Well except one. Jamie and Tyrion welcomed you warmly. They were happy their father found finally someone else to spend his old age with. It was good to see him happy again.

But his daughter Cercei was another matter. She didn’t like you at all. She thought you were just some whore who thinks that you can replace her mother. A slut only here for the money and title. Tywin was so angry that he slapped and threatened her for that. After that Cercei didn’t dare to make any talk about you near you or her father.

He was protective. He wouldn’t let anything harm you. He vowed not to lose another wife. So he kept you behind Casterly Rock walls most of the time.

Only his most trusted servants he let near you because he had many rivals.

He had taught many times about baby trapping so you couldn’t flee and then you would have something to do all day. Also he needs a new heir to the Rock. His eldest son is a knight, his daughter is queen and then twarf. He needed a new son anyway but remembering what happened with Joanna he promised he wouldn’t press the matter. Only if you wanted.

And besides why would you even flee when he gives you everything and anything? You couldn’t step out of the castle even if you wished. Everyone has their eyes on you 24/7.

Rewatching 8x05 for writing reasons, which is just a brilliant episode, despite any reasons some might have to hate it, valid or invalid. Miguel Sapochnik is directing and you see his talent and epicness in every shot (that man deserves a freaking Emmy already, I said what I said) but also there are so many things being shown here that if you muted the episode after Daenerys makes her decision, during the battle scene, you would be able to tell exactly what each character is thinking and what's really going on in the story besides the surface action.

Which brings me to that one scene that a lot of people said the woman being attacked as a stand-in for Sansa in the episode for Jon. They are correct and here's how.

Jon is walking through the melee, only coming to life to defend himself when Lannister soldiers are trying to attack him. The Northerners aren't listening to him, they're attacking innocent civilians, Grey Worm is on a killing spree, Davos is trying to help people get away from the bloodshed, Dany is burning the city, Tyrion is off somewhere horrified, Cersei is watching in terror from the Red Keep... But during this scene, the sound is muted to a point where the sounds of battle happening all around Jon sound very far away. We're now seeing what Jon sees, we're in his shock fugue with him. We see on his left civilians, namely women, being brutalized by soldiers -> he keeps walking. We on his right a woman being knocked down to the ground while a child is watching in horror, blood spatter and bodies all around her (and obviously traumatized & also in danger herself since no one is left to protect her) -> he keeps walking. He then sees a Lanniser soldier telling people to run, something his soldiers should be doing (and something he himself should be doing like Davos) but he's not. While the sounds are still muted, Jon notices another Lannister soldier about to rush him and he goes into autopilot & fights the soldier off. He then looks around in horror.

This is not what he signed up for and he almost looks lost, like he doesn't know what to do. Then the sound comes back fully and he hears a scream. In all of the melee, chaos, and death around him, he hears this one woman above the rest and turns to see her being dragged into an alley to presumably be assaulted by one of his own men.

Sure enough, she's about to be and she is trying to crawl away when the man catches her again. Jon ends up saving her, threatening to run his sword through the man. When the latter tries to fight him off to go back to assault this woman, Jon kills him and tells the woman to hide.

So how is this woman standing in for Sansa besides the obvious?

Two ways.

1) Ramsay was the former Warden of the North, the former bastard of Roose Bolton who was a Northerner who "served" Robb Stark, the first King in the North, before betraying him to the Lannisters. The soldier Jon faces off with is a Northerner and is supposed to be under Jon's command as Warden of the North and the former second King in the North.

2) Sansa is who stirs Jon into action when he feels lost.

Every.

Time.

And the parallels between the gif above with Dany and the dagger to the Northern soldier that had Jon's sword run through him, and Jon's staring almost sadly at the man, realizing he had to kill one of his own are far from being coincidental.

Not only was this a precursor to what would occur in 8x06 (and why Jon would make the decision he did) but it also is symbolic of the dynamic between Jon and Sansa as a whole. She's the one who stirs him into action, no matter how terrified or traumatized or angry he might be in that moment (like the shock fugue). No matter how lost he might feel. She gives him direction and dare I say a purpose when he has none (after his death; after the WW are defeated & Dany has gone into tyrant mode).

No wonder we weren't allowed to see Sansa's (or Arya's) reaction to the news of his being a Targaryen.

No wonder Jon told Melisandre not to bring him back if he lost the Battle of the Bastards (after Sansa told him if he lost, she wouldn't be going back to Ramsay alive).

No wonder Jon was not happy with Sansa on the dock in 8x06.

She's always stirred him into action when he doesn't want to be or know how to do it himself (after his death).

He passed a woman he could have saved.

He passed a child he could have helped.

He saw someone on the other side helping and doing the right thing.

The only time he steps in to help someone else is the woman about to be assaulted.

(x) "You are the shield that guards the realms of men. You've always tried to do the right thing. No matter the cost. You've tried to protect people. Who's the greatest threat to the people now?" (no reaction)

"Do you think I'm the last man she'll execute? Who is more dangerous than the rightful heir to the Iron Throne?" (no reaction)

"And your sisters? Do you see them bending the knee?" (a little bit of a reaction)

"Why do you think Sansa told me the truth about you? Because she doesn't want Dany to be queen." (more of a reaction)

"No, but you do. And you have to choose now." (he hesitatingly goes to confront Dany and then 🗡️)

It's not just about her being his "sister" or because she's Lady Stark or family or because they were the last two Starks once upon a time. She literally stirs him into action and gives him purpose. Her pushing to go back to Winterfell led to him caring about the WW invasion again. Her being the one he chooses to protect ended a tyrant and changed history, leading for her to become the first Queen in the North and regain Northern Independence, where she can be forever safe.

It was always Sansa for him, starting in 6x04.

MONACA TOWA

Monaca Towa is a member of the Warriors of Hope, a group of children who are also the main antagonists of this game, and is one of the instigators of Demon Hunting (aka hunting adults for sport) Monaca Towa has committed an incredible amount of crimes, and her list includes: mass murder of adults, mass brainwashing of children, attempted genocide, attempted war incitement, physical and psychological abuse (to her own friend group), sexual assault (TO HER OWN FRIEND GROUP), identity theft, terrorism, blackmail, embezzlement and weapon dealing. The Warriors of Hope have all committed mass murder and terrorism, for example, but they not only have committed less atrocities than her, but are also more sympathetic. The other WoH committed so many crimes because Junko Enoshima convinced it was the only way to keep them and other children safe from the abuse that drove them to attempt suicide, plus they never tried to murder or manipulate a fellow member. Monaca, meanwhile, did all this knowing full well just how bad it was, all for the sake of trying to find a successor for Ultimate Despair, aka the worst person in the entire world. She abuses the rest of the WoH in order to keep them loyal to her, shutting down any doubts by intentionally triggering their trauma and/or straight up physically and sexually assaulting them. Monaca even claims that she suggested their attempted group suicide while not intending to follow through just to kill them, although her diaries make that claim debatable. Also she is, like…10 years old at the start of the game. I cannot stress enough that she did all that AS A TEN YEAR OLD!!!!

It’s always very odd to me when I read criticism of A Song Of Ice And Fire online (by which I mainly mean: on Tumblr) which takes for granted that this is some sort of obsessively dark and edgy and mean-spirited fantasy, because ... that's not what the series is actually like at all?

I mean, yes, some awful (and graphically described) stuff happens in these books, but this is at heart a deeply optimistic and almost embarrassingly romantic story, full of a very obvious sympathy and tenderness for the unhappy and the hurt and the powerless. The weird gritty-for-the-sake-of-it books that the series's detractors describe wouldn't have recurring POV characters like Sansa Stark or Tyrion Lannister or Davos Seaworth or Samwell Tarly or Brienne of Tarth. They certainly wouldn't obviously empathize with and respect these characters to the extent the actual books do. They wouldn't be so obsessive about the importance of hope and kindness and understanding in an otherwise uncaring world. Whenever the text suggests the world isn't fair or kind there's always an unspoken "but it should be,and I wish it was". You are clearly not meant to think that characters like Roose Bolton or Twyin Lannister are being held up as role models to emulate!

I mean, maybe the TV show is more like that -- I gave up on the show after only a couple of seasons, it was a terrible adaptation of the source material, even before the final season that everyone apparently hated -- but so much of the open disdain for ASOIAF I come across on here reads like the people writing the posts haven't even read a single one of the books. Yes, the popularity of ASOIAF inspired a lot of "dark" fantasy novels that actually are bleakly nihilistic and seem to revel in their characters meeting pointlessly sad and violent ends, but Martin's books are just not like that.

Yes, lots of the world-building for ASOIAF is patently ridiculous, and yes, key parts of the plot are just cribbed from the War of the Roses (or, rather, from historical novels like Sharon Penman's The Sunne in Splendour) and yes, Martin has said some very stupid things in interviews while busy not writing the series. And no, I'm not sure I could actually bring myself to recommend the books to anyone who's not read them before (especially when it's so unlikely that the series will ever be finished, let alone in a satisfying way). I haven’t reread them myself in years.

But honestly, back when I was a quietly miserable teenager these books really meant a lot to me, in part because they are the opposite of the caricature often discussed online. Yes, they acknowledged that sometimes the world was awful and unbearable. It is! But they also suggested that it was still important to try to be fair and kind and to appreciate the moments when things were better. They are books about trying to do the right thing even when it’s so hard as to seem impossible and nobody else will even know that you tried, written in a way that takes for granted that “the right thing” is also the just and the optimistic and the quietly heroic thing; that doing the right thing when you afraid is more praiseworthy than never being afraid at all. And it is baffling to me how often I see people talking about them now who don't actually seem to have ever even skimmed them but are still vocally passionate in their hatred of something that, as they describe it, simply doesn't exist.
