Alternatively to feeling dread, there's the idea that Shang Qinghua actually revels in bouts of 'I am the creator and I'm the character' moments.
Shang Qinghua holds up a flower and asks everyone present to describe it. They can't come to an agreement. He snickers internally because, yeah, sounds about right. He never specified its colour.
Certain powerful spiritual blades are forged from a metal so ancient, no one knows its name, origin or method of smithing. Que Shang Qinghua, "Sorry about that."
Shang Qinghua surprising his favourites because he knows those things makes them happy. Is it manipulation if everyone's happy in the end? Who cares.
Shen Qingqiu sents a report to An Ding that only reads "You had someone stir up problems there so I could see the reference, you absolute SH-"
One of his background characters writes a poem he never wrote himself and he just sits there, realizing it might be better than he ever could have come up with. Then again, he created the author, so it's a win.

My Journey To You - Thoughts and Impressions Part 2 of 2 - The Characters
Part 1 HERE
The format of the post will be as follows:
1) Yun Wei Shan
2) Gong Zi Yu
3) Their Relationship
4) Shangguan Qian
5) Gong Shang Jue
6) Their relationship
Spoilers below, beware all who enter.
Yun Wei Shan:
Tumblr media
On paper, Yun Wei Shan seems like a perfectly fine character, she's empathetic, kind in an unkind world and willing to go to extremes (even putting her life on the line) to protect those she loves and cares about. The problem is just that though, in a book, we would have access to her thoughts and her perspective which would make for interesting reading. But when viewed visually, it's not as compelling. Visually, you have a character who seems to have the range of 2 expressions and there's no sense of internal conflict. Take her 'allegiance' to Wufeng for instance. From the very beginning, we the audience, can tell that she's not truly aligned with them or their ideology. She doesn't agree with their methods and if not for her foster sister, Yun Que she would have quit long ago. Not even the poison that Wufeng uses to keep all their assassins in check, would stop her.
What I will commend her characters for is her innate kindness. She is kind in a world that should have snuffed that light out a long time ago and yet, it persisted. This was in no small part due to her bond with Yun Que. She wasn't simply a dorm-mate, a fellow assassin. She was a sister in every sense of the word. She had someone to care for and protect. Even her mentor, Han Ya Si, is not like the cold and unfeeling mentors we meet later. You can tell that he genuinely cares about those under him. For all intents and purposes, he raised these women since they were children and unlike the others, he doesn't view them as tools to be used and then discarded when no longer useful.
When she goes to the Gong Family as a prospective bride, we also know that Yun Que is dead, her one tangible tie to Wufeng is gone. She's now thrust into this family that Wufeng claims is their arch-nemesis but throughout the show, we never find out what her actual mission is, what is she after? Why was she sent? She's clearly not supposed to kill anyone. Evade discovery but then what? We never find out. But because she's not particularly loyal to Wufeng, there's never any sense of conflicting desire inside her. So in that sense, she becomes a very one-note-character.
In terms of character growth, there is very little. Throughout the series, her one desire for freedom which, in a sense she does achieve (if you ignore the last 5 minutes of the show) All her life, she's been told what to do and that love is a weakness. At the end, she chooses to stay with Gong Zi Yu and embraces her love for him and those around her.
Gong Zi Yu:
Tumblr media
Gong Zi Yu is perhaps the weakest link among the four main leads. If Yun Wei Shan's growth seemed negligible, Zi Yu's felt unearned.
I understand what the writer and director were going for, they set him up as a contrast to the other clan warriors who are cold and calculative, he was warm and kind. He starts off the series as someone who doesn't much care for the Gong family traditions, preferring instead the company of courtesans, he likes poetry and music. However, with the sudden death of his father and brother, he's thrust back into the family and worse into the role of Sword Wielder (SW), the leader of the Gongs. To officially become the SW, he must pass 3 tests and this is where things become a little strange. He passes them with ease and it feels unearned because while others who trained their whole lives took considerably longer to pass those tests, he came in with essentially no training and aced.
Now, you can be special but the fact that you are "special" must be made noticeable in text, like foreshadow it, or leave subtle clues that hint at it. The show does none of this and instead just asks the audience to believe it. That is not how you write a compelling character.
He's also probably the least mature character in the show (and I'll get to big reveal in a bit) but his blatant disregard for the Gong family protocols more than once, illustrate his cavalier attitude. Another way of looking at this is that he breaks tradition because he wants to create a better world for the generations to follow but all of that gets negated at the end.
The big reveal at the end, where we realise that everything that happened since Yun Wei Shan's reveal as a Wufeng assassin, was his grand plan does not make sense one bit. It comes completely left of field with little to no set-up at all. There was no foreshadowing, no little seeds left by the writer/director, little things that the audience could notice upon rewatching the show. In their effort to be ‘unexpected’, they sacrificed coherent story-telling.
Even his relationship with Yun Wei Shan is boring. I get that it was meant to be sweet but sweet will only take you so far especially in a show where the tone is anything but that. I know we're meant to swoon because of how steadfast he is when it comes to her but there are times when it seems straight up stupid. She is an assassin who has infiltrated his family and her mission could possibly be to kill him or someone close to him. Unlike the audience, he doesn't know that she is kind and even if he sees it, how can he know that it's not a facade? This also makes it seem like their relationship has no stakes, like what could she possibly do to make him doubt her or vice-versa.
I know you could be thinking, "but this is a healthy relationship." Okay but how is it healthy? It would have been if they explicitly trusted each other and communicated (like a Dream of Splendor, now that was a healthy relationship) but Zi Yu and Yun Wei Shan don't do that either, at least she's not always honest. If we're meant to believe that they do indeed communicate, then we need to see it, you can't plug it in as an extension of a previous scene and call it a day.
One of the best ways of making a compelling couple is the push and pull of the relationship and this ship had all of the ingredients; The Assassin and The Target, both suspicious of each other but inexplicably drawn together, so much sexual tension and angst. Instead, all we got was bland love at first sight and then sticking through it.
Shangguan Qian:
Tumblr media
Shangguan Qian is the other assassin sent by the Wufeng (why send only one when you can send two and double your chances of success) and her character is infinitely more delicious than Yun Wei Shan's.
Shangguan Qian is very hard to pin down and stays so till pretty much the end of the series. Her motives are complex and you can never tell just whose side she's on. I also love the way she gradually warms up to the Gong brothers. I think that Wufeng feeds it's assassins a lot of lies about the family and her being with them, i think starts to dispel some of the myths.
She is also set-up as a foil to Yun Wei Shan. Where Wei Shan is kind and straighforward, Shangguan Qian is cold and unpredictable. Her demeanour makes sense when you look at her relationship with her mentor, Han Ya Qi, who in contrast to Han Ya Si, does seem to view his pupils as expendable. He recognises, correctly, that the only person Shangguan Qian cares about her is herself and that's because of the world she was raised in, caught in a perpetual dance between survival and death, there was little time for luxuries like love.
But even here, the show and Shangguan Qian surprise us. At the end, we learn that Han Ya Qi did take steps to protect Shangguan Qian and when he is at death's doorstep, alone, she does come back for him and tries to save him. The Shangguan Qian we met at the beginning of the series, would have left him there to die without a backward glance. Her time with the Gongs and especially with Yun Wei Shan and Lady Wuji, gave her glimpse of what life could be like, it's subtle but it's there. Every time Wei Shan helps her without asking for anything in return, there's always a beat where you can tell that Shangguan Qian is wondering what her motives could be. She never trusts the other women fully, they are after all Wufeng assassins but I do believe, by the end of the series, her opinion of them is kinder at the very least.
I also loved how unapologetic Shangguan Qian is. She's not sitting there wringing her hands, fussing over things she has to do. To her knowledge, if she fails her mission, she dies. Her mentor doesn't seem to care beyond training her, she has no one to fall back on. She has a job to do and she's gonna do it to the best of her abilities.
I must also talk about the actress, Lu Yu Xiao, and her performance. Her character is someone who is always on alert, always plotting her next move, carefully observing those around her for weaknesses she can exploit. She goes from seductive to hurt to unaffected in a beat and conveys it all through her eyes and the minutest of facial expressions. Her performance is so understated and it's a pleasure to watch.
Gong Shang Jue:
Tumblr media
Gong Shang Jue is the resident emo dude and he is easily one of the best characters in the show. He makes no bones about his opinion of Zi Yu and for the most part, his criticisms are on point. He is an also incredibly traumatised character, having lost his mother and younger brother during the previous Wufeng attack. His zeal, therefore, to find and root out any and all Wufeng assassins who could have infiltrated the family makes sense, he's already lost the people closest to him, he doesn't want to lose any more. He is so single-minded that he doesn't even spare his own prospective bride when he suspects her of being from Wufeng.
Unlike Zi Yu, Shang Jue realises why the Gongs put in the protocols that they did. At the beginning of the show, he is painted in a more antagonistic light (this is to land the big reveal at the end) but you can see that Shang Jue doesn't really care about power. His quest for position of SW, is more about keeping his family safe and he believes that he is the best candidate for that job.
His cold exterior only ever cracks when he's with his other brother Gong Yuan Zhi (he's the resident psychopath) With Yuan Zhi, you can see what Shang Jue could have been like, if not for the events of the past.
The relationship between Shang Jue and Shangguan Qian is a treat to watch. There was so much sexual tension between them, so much suppressed yearning, I loved it. Theirs was such a cat and mouse game with each constantly trying to outwit the other.
Is it a healthy relationship? Not really, he literally interrogates her and threatens to torture her even more if she doesn't talk. But he's not someone who is demonstrative of his emotions and feelings, like I don't think he knows how to open up. But with Shangguan Qian, his cold heart begins to thaw and you can see that in their interactions.
Every time, Shangguan Qian initiates physical intimacy or tries to, you can see the confusion on his face and the inner conflict. On the one hand, he doesn't fully trust her and is suspicious of her motives, but on the other, there is a part of him that genuinely likes and yearns for it. There are instances where he wants to reach out to her or touch her but always holds himself back.
Shangguan Qian is also only ever honest with Shang Jue, she tells him the truth and I think a lot of their later interactions (at least on her part) are largely genuine.
They are also unnervingly similar to each other, both owe their allegiance to something larger than themselves and are shaped by their trauma (Shangguan Qian with the loss of her entire family and Shang Jue with the death of his mother and brother) They are drawn to each other despite everything because they see that they are the only people who are capable of understanding exactly what the other is going through.
What differentiates them however, is that while Shang Jue is driven by loyalty, Shangguan Qian is driven by vengeance and therein lies their greatest obstacle, the one thing that neither is willing to compromise. They are so beautifully written and executed that, even knowing that it could never work out, they still make the audience root for them.
And yet, by the end of the show, they are both fundamentally different people. Shang Jue chooses to let her go when he finds out she's pregnant and instead of going back to Wufeng, Shangguan Qian chooses to stay in a small isolated house with azaleas planted around the house. She chooses to peace and safety for her unborn child over her thirst for revenge.
If there is to be a season 2, a Shangguan Qian and Shang Jue reunion is inevitable and I for one, would love to see how that unfolds...

Wang Chuan Feng Hua Lu (忘川风华录) Masterpost
Tumblr media
Wang Chuan Feng Hua Lu (忘川风华录) is a Vocal synth (Vocaloid and SynthV) music project. It consists of songs themed around different figures throughout Chinese history. The project is a collaboration between different artists and creatives, with music and videos featuring prominent traditional Chinese elements. The project's title translates to "The Records of Magnificence of the Wangchuan" - In Chinese mythology, "Wangchuan" (or River of Forgetting) is a river in the Underworld that can rid one of their past life's memories, similar to the river Lethe.
A mobile game adaptation has also been developed by NetEast. Unfortunately, I haven't played it so I can't give much insight on it. However, I assume that its premise is similar to that of the idea behind the project as a whole: all these historical figures meeting each other in the Underworld after they died. Maybe.
You can find all the songs on Bilibili. The official Weibo can be found here. The game's website, which includes all characters appearing so far in the game, can be found here, and its Weibo can be found here.
(If you prefer YouTube, I've also put together a handy playlist. Please know that most of these videos are reposts though, so please watch the original Bilibili MVs if you can!)
This blog is where I will be posting everything I feel like I need to say about the songs in this project. A lot of it is lifted from my Twitter account but will be in much more detail. Note that I probably won't touch collab songs, or songs that don't focus solely on the project's own characters.
Disclaimer: I do not speak Chinese, nor am I an expert on Chinese history. Therefore, I cannot reliably translate the lyrics to these songs, nor my words should be taken as gospel. I am merely a nerd gushing about my hyperfixation.

Snapshot of the Future?
This is a gift for my cumplane giftee @letyepetyelepetye I hope you enjoy this I'm sorry its a bit short! I really enjoyed writing again for the first time in 4 years! I’m enonah in the server incase you are wondering!  Maybe next time, I should just grow out my hair… Shen Yuan internally groused as he flips back a strand of hair that’s fallen in-front of his face for the one thousandth time today. Trying to inspect a hand-crafted model that one stall owner was promoting, this person was proudly portraying that you can send in custom designs as well; for a price of course; and you would have your very own oc model. Many displayed samples were of the D&D variety, but Shen Yuan was currently thinking up many au designs for his favourite danmei characters. I wonder if I can make a strawberry shortcake design for Binghe or Shang Qinghua? Snorting to himself, Shen Yuan doesn’t notice someone walking up to stand next to him, going on tip toes to peer over his shoulder at the colourful display. “Whoa! That bow looks epic, oh man I wish I had one like for my final fantasy 14 character… I would look kickass as my bard!” Nearly dropping his bag that held his yu-gi-oh! Inspired cookies, Shen Yuan scowls, head whipping to the side ready to give the person behind, loudly shouting in his ear, a piece of his mind. “That’s my ear you- what….what the fuck are you meant to be?” His scathing tone quickly dissolved into one of pure confusion, behind him is a guy who is on the shorter side wearing what is clearly a cosplay, and a hand made one as well, but Shen Yuan could not make out what specific character it was. The cosplay was a warm orange and cream like palette, on the shoulders there were cloud like patterns and a jade token attached to the waist. The robes did look pretty, they made the guy look soft and plain but in a way that didn’t make him seem to be boring. His hair was messily brought up into a half bun, clearly his own hair and not a wig like Shen Yuan’s. but over the top of the robes, was a cape that had a thick fur lining, the cape itself was a white with barely see-able icy blue snowflakes on it and patterns that you could only really see when trying and up close. It was clearly beautifully made, but the mistakes on the embroidery here and there told Shen Yuan that it was hand made and not machine made. It was truly an impressive cosplay and a lot of care when into it. But who was it?! The stranger, during the time that Shen Yuan was looking him over, gave him a quick look as well, before grinning widely, an odd spark of self-satisfaction and pride could be seen. “Let me guess, Shen Qingqiu? Nice cosplay…is that a dog motif on your belt?” Frowning in confusion, the cute stranger pointed at Shen Yuan’s belt, the other hand resting on his hip which was holding a bag, not caring that it smacked against a table. Cringing, Shen Yuan looked down at his belt that indeed had motifs of BingPup, a gift from his sister who helped him make this cosplay. She was practicing to become a clothes designer and practically jumped at the chance to make her brothers gifts in the form of clothing when she could. Shen Yuan himself had adored the cute design, but the strangers comment made him feel a bit self-conscious about it. “It’s a small joke about a character from a book I like, Luo Binghe reminds me of a cute puppy so my sister helped me make it” Trying to keep his voice even, Shen Yuan channels his older brother’s confidence, but a small insecure wobble could still be heard. The Stranger having the social que awareness of nothing, only hummed as he turns his head one way and another, apparently not realising how increasingly flustered Shen Yuan was becoming. “Can you stop staring?!” “Oh! Sorry! It’s just really adorable” Laughing awkwardly, the stranger itched the side of his nose, straightening back up, giving Shen Yuan a lopsided grin. “But seriously, are you meant to be Shen Qingqiu? The detail is great, where did you get it? I didn’t hear about any merchandise new deals…” the last part was mumbled to the point that Shen Yuan couldn’t fully hear it, still focused on the compliment part. Preening, Shen Yuan finds himself straightening up a bit, a smug look creeping onto his face. “Thanks, my sister helped me with the finer details, it is Shen Qingqiu’s cosplay, I thought I could pull it off” Snapping out a fan that he got when he signed up for behind-the-scenes content, designed officially but the book creator as well. There where only so many of them and Shen Yuan had one, one of his proudest possessions. The look of pure surprise on the strangers’ face was well worth getting it just for this moment alone, Shen Yuan felt his lips curl up, pleased as the stranger’s eyes went impossibly wide. “You even brought that?! Damn…” “So, you now know who I’m cosplaying as, who are you may I ask?”  Shen Yuan idly fans himself; the convention was packed full of people, the air was getting stuffy after being inside for so long. Blinking, the stranger tears his eyes away from the fan finally, pulling his mind from whatever thoughts he was having. “Oh! I’m actually Shang Qinghua from the same book, just er, adapted to something a bit of a personal fantasy…” the cosplayers cheeks heat up with an adorable blush that made Shen Yuan’s fingers itch with the need to pinch them, but held back. “Huh, I didn’t realise it was PIDW” frowning, Shen Yuan kicked himself for somehow not realising, after being told, he could see all the small tells as to which character this was. The fact that it was adapted was the only comfort for his PIDW loving brain for not recongising it sooner. “It’s beautiful, the cape is very pretty” Face lighting up like a Christmas tree, the cute stranger positively beamed at him in delight, “You like it?! I was so unsure how it would look…” Yeah, Shen Yuan could understand that he had taken the same gamble with his belt himself after all. “Oh, I’m Shang Qinghua by the way, it’s great to see another fan and cosplayer of my work!” I’m sure he meant his favourite work; idiot’s mouth runs faster than his brain it seems. Laughing under his breath a bit, Shen Yuan inclines his head in greeting, “I’m Shen Yuan, are you really named the same as the character…?” Shen Yuan found it hard to believe but it would also make sense, it was probably similar as to how Shen Yuan feels the need to cosplay Shen Qingqiu because they share the same name. Nervously chuckling, Shang Qinghua nods sheepishly, toeing the ground as if embarrassed, well the character Shang Qinghua was pretty shady… “It is my actual name yeah, er, you can call me by a nickname if you like?” Shaking his head, Shen Yuan declines the offer, calling him by a nickname so soon feels bit to personal for being basically strangers. “Great!” Cheering up, Shang Qinghua’s entire body seems to bounce with joy, Shen Yuan could not help but find it endearing how his entire body seemed to project his moods so clearly. It was like watching a hamster, adorable and sweet. Anyone would think the same if they were me, its not gay to think a guy is cute! Nodding to himself, Shen Yuan adjusts his bags carefully before turning to look at Shang Qinghua again. “Have you seen many other PIDW cosplayers?” Pouting, Shang Qinghua shakes his head, crossing his arms ignoring how his bag again fly’s around, giving Shen Yuan a low key heart attack. How could he be so careless?! “Nah, you are the first one, honestly a bit sad by that but that just means we look extra amazing!” Grinning confidently, Shang Qinghua proudly exclaims, a beat later he jolts as an idea comes to him and he’s grabbing onto Shen Yuan’s arm excitedly, tugging on it causing Shen Yuan to stumble. For a small guy, he sure has one hell of a hidden strength, is this the power of adorableness? “Let’s go take pictures! Come on it will be fuuuuun! Please it’s not often I meet a real-life actual fan of PIDW!” A small whine can be heard as Shang Qinghua somehow magically summons up tears into his eyes and gives Shen Yuan the most pitiable puppy eyes he has ever seen. Groaning as he rubs his shoulder, Shen Yuan sighs, finding him unable to look away from the cute sight. “Fine! I will do a couple with you, but only a few got it? And you better send me a copy of them all…” Cheering, Shang Qinghua finally let’s go of his captive, fist pumping the air. Thinking himself free, Shen Yuan makes sure that he has all his things, and barely manages to pick up one back that he had placed on the ground, before his hand is grabbed and he finds himself being dragged through the crowd. It takes them a few good minutes to get outside, but the duo manages it with Shang Qinghua leading the way through, the small man managing to find all the gaps and squeezing them through in no time. “Oh oh oh oh oh, where should we start? Oooh that tree could make for a great backdrop for you- oh no, that area over there is practically perfect! Let’s go, hurry!” Barely having time to properly look around, Shen Yuan soon finds himself dragged over to a small section of the grounds that has some trees and even some bamboo planted along with some other flowering bushes and a small stream. “Put your bags to the side while I set up my camera, ok?” Shang Qinghua is setting up a small phone stand and the timer on his camera, his bags already thrown carelessly to the side as the eccentric hamster mutters to himself. Bewildered, Shen Yuan takes a moment to collect himself and carefully place his bags to the side. Making sure that his cookies don’t get ruined. “Ok that’s set, get your fan maybe and let’s strike a few poses together, maybe one of us walking through the bamboo? Hmm what else…” And this is how, Shen Yuan, spoilt son of his family, ends up being directed and fussed over to take many many different shots. It was actually surprisingly fun much to his surprise. Many shots ended up ruined because they would burst out laughing or falling over, such as when Shang Qinghua thought it would be a good idea to jump on the small stones in the shallow stream and ended up knee deep into it instead. Shen Yuan had so much that, he couldn’t remember every having smiled or laughed this much at one time for years. Being so sick so often to the point that he was bed ridden for months at a time, it felt so good to be laughing with someone again, to be enjoying his time instead of finding ways to cope with being inside and lonely. It felt…nice to have someone enjoy his company as well, it felt so good to have someone excitedly look at the photo’s they take and plan the next few. As if spending time with Shen Yuan was actually fun and not something to be over as soon as possible or that he has to be treated like spun glass. Shang Qinghua treats him like a normal person, yes Shen Yuan is going to be exhausted and aching something terrible tomorrow, but all he can think is- Shang Qinghua has a sweet smile. His dimples are just so cute when he laughs, completely in a platonic way of course! Its’ not like he has a crush on Shang Qinghua at all, any sane person would find him so utterly cute! You try and find someone who would disagree! “Fuck, the time is already 4pm, the convention closes in an hour, we really spent a long time out here huh? Say you coming to tomorrow as well or just today? Sorry if you had wanted to do other things…” Shen Yuan was surprised to see the time and sure enough, when he checked his phone, it glared 4:01pm back at him. Damn, he had actually wanted to get everything done today and meet a guy, because he knows he will be in bed tomorrow. However, looking at Shang Qinghua’s dejected and apologetic look, remembering all the fun they had, Shen Yuan couldn’t bring himself to be angry. “I wasn’t planning on coming tomorrow, but if I can I may come in, I wanted to meet an actor my sister likes for an autograph, think we have enough time to see a few stalls before closing?” “Sure! Many people should have left now so we should be able to zip around!” Relief bleeding through Shang Qinghua’s body that his new friend wasn’t mad, they quickly gather their things before heading back inside. True to Shang Qinghua’s word, many people had already filtered out and left the place much more empty that it had been previously. A blessing for Shen Yuan who could already feel his limbs and joints screaming at him for doing so much. Biting back a hiss as he moves out of the way of some transformer cosplay, Shen Yuan follows close behind Shang Qinghua. “Hey bro, give me your email and ill send the pictures over to you while you take a look at the stalls?” “Sure, my personal one is [email protected]” Pausing visibly, Shang Qinghua simply raises an eyebrow at him as Shen Yuan blushes hotly in embarrassment. “What? It was all that came to mind at the time and its for personal use only! Don’t give me that look I bet yours is no better” “Actu- yeah ok mine is no better” Laughing, Shang Qinghua happily hums as he starts to attach the picture folder to Shen Yuan’s email to send to him. While he does that, Shen Yuan eyes some cute looking rabbit, cat and panda plushies, debating which to get his older brother as a gag gift for Christmas, maybe he should get the chicken one… “Ok that’s sent! That should be all the pictures bro! Say, in the future would you like to do this again? It was really fun and I would to- ow ow ow! What the heck bro!? why you- S-Stop it!!” “Your email- your airplane?!” “er…yeah? H-hey ow! Not the nose!” “you stupid trash writer! After this you are coming back with me while I soak in a bath because my everything hurt’s and you are going to listen to everything I have to say about your stupid trash book!” “oh…hey you are peerle-“ “yes yes yes I am shush!” Grinning despite the red mark on his forehead from a vicious fan whack, Shang Qinghua just coos at Shen Yuan who politely pays for the plush from a mildly concerned shop keeper. “Awwwww! You are my biggest fan, you know I love reading your comments whenever I feel down at home writing, they really make me feel bet-“ “You read them and don’t reply?!” “Yeah because I hope that maybe, if I don’t you will keep commenting- put that fan away! Wait, I’m coming back with you? Does this mean dinner at yours?”   Huffing, Shen Yuan grumbles as he puts his fan away and starts walking towards the exit, body hurting too much to warrant staying now. “Yes, I want noodles if I’m going to have to put up with you” “Oh sweet! Wait, are you ok..?” “It’s fine, this happens often, aa week of rest and I will be fine-“ “A week?!” Shang Qinghua squeaks out in shock as they walk, “ and you wanted to come in tomorrow as well?! Bro you should stay home!” “I can’t, I need to get that signature, I promised my sister, plus I wanted to look around…” Looking at Shen Yuan in understanding Shang Qinghua couldn’t help but feel bad again for earlier. “Hmmm, wait, think we have enough time to make a new cosplay? If you wanted to cosplay tomorrow? Wait, do you have a wheelchair?” Sceptical, Shen Yuan nods, he had a wheelchair, but he hates using it because it makes me feel so hopeless when he does. “Sweet! Ok think we can magic up a throne like cosplay around your wheelchair and make you look like Thranduil?”

🇬🇧🇺🇸 ENGLISH / ANGLAIS 🇬🇧🇺🇸
You may have understood it from my recent reblog of drawings related to the Disney live-action film The Little Mermaid: I actually went to see this film for which I had a lot of fears, reservations, a priori.. I'm not going to review the film here and now, but know that I enjoyed it. It will never be legal from the 1989 animated film - like all other live-action. However, one of the positive points of the film is the romantic relationship between Prince Eric and Princess Ariel.
Prince Eric is well embodied and that's why I wanted to make a ranking of the best Disney Princes in my opinion in live-action films.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I made this classification by judging whether the actor who played the male character was faithful to the original character, or, if he brought something new, it served the plot of the film and allowed to flesh out its character.
The question of the physical beauty was important: do we recognize the character, is he beautiful but is he reduced to his beauty?
I also took into account the chemistry with the heroine, because I chose films in which the Princess is at the center of the story (except perhaps for Aladdin (2019)): these couples are iconic, but was the chemistry between the Prince and the heroine similar, better or worse than in the original animated film?
Acting and presence were therefore my main points of judgment.
The ranking goes from worst to best.
7. Yoson An as Chen Hong Hui in the live-action Mulan (2020) 🐉. Li Shang is a good character in the anime, sexy, funny (not always, but especially in the sequel, Mulan II) and brave. But in the film with actors it is totally eclipsed and does not manage to really exist. The actor Yoson An is very handsome, but his character is forgettable and it's a shame because there was the potential to exploit the character's real or supposed bisexuality. I know Li Shang is considered bisexual by some and honestly I see him that way too. In the live action, they didn't want to make him a superior of Mulan so as not to show a woman falling in love with her boss... except that they don't even fall in love! Perhaps Chen Hong Hui will be better exploited in a sequel...

6. Dan Stevens as the Prince/Beast in the live action Beauty and the Beast (2017) 🥀. What a desappointment. I had discovered Dan Stevens in the excellent television series Downtown Abbey, and since then he has had various roles where he is not just the handsome man. Here, Dan Stevens only appears at the very beginning and at the very end, we can't get attached to him and he doesn't even have the first name Adam which is supposed to be that of the Prince in the animated film! Dan Stevens is very handsome, of course, but only in his blue wedding outfit, and the scene lasts 1 minute! No charisma, no chemistry with Belle... A real waste for a complex character who is also handsome and masculine.

5. Brenton Thwaites as Prince Philip in Maleficent (2014) 🐴. This role is the one that made Australian actor Brenton Thwaites known to the general public. In the film, he's cute and smiling and we feel a beginning of complicity with Aurore, but unfortunately it's too fast to create a real chemistry. In addition to the treatment of Philip in relation to the kiss of love - which makes me think that I would almost have preferred it not to appear in the film given its uselessness - I was not at all convinced by his all-too-common physical appearance. He reminded me more of Prince Florian from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937). In short, the actor is good but for me it's not Prince Philip that I like. Besides, if you want to read an erotic fiction about Prince Philip that respects his personality more while making it gay with domination, I wrote one about him, even if there are surprises... 😜
4. Mena Massoud as Aladdin in Aladdin (2019) 🐒. Aladdin (1992) is an excellent film and its protagonist is iconic. He was one of the first heroes not to be defined by his couple, because even if his love affair with Jasmine is one of his motivations, Aladdin also exists for himself. Mena Massoud kept this humor from the character and brought a seductive side enhanced by his beauty. Yet, the actor lacked facial expressions bringing emotion to his journey. Live-action Aladdin has a good personality (there are even some never-before-seen moments like his bonding with the Genie as well as dancing with Jasmine at the ball). In fact, the problem is that the actor Mena Massoud is crushed by the charisma of Will Smith, the beauty if the actor who played Jafar, as well as the performance of Naomi Scott who fleshed out the character of Princess Jasmine (especially with Talking). Mena Massoud was handsome as Aladdin, but it's partly thanks to his costumes which were amazing (especially his wedding outift, which is exactly how i imagine an Arabian Prince 😍). I am inspired by this Aladdin to write a story about him but i would like him to be gay, like maybe falling in love with Prince Anders (the white Russian prince in the movie). I worship Prince Anders (so handsome and he wears furs 🥵), so if you have suggestions about him, don't hesitate. If there's going to be a sequel to this live-action, I really hope it's an original story and not a pasted copy of The Return of Jafar. Otherwise, I wrote an Aladdin story in two parts. For those who haven't read it, I recommend it because I tried to make it funny, original, romantic and erotic. 😁
3. Harris Dickinson as Prince Philip in Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019). ⚔️ Released the year of the 50th anniversary of the animated film Sleeping Beauty (1959) - my favorite Disney film - this live action is among my favorites. However, I must admit that Prince Philip, if he is more handsome and more active in this film, still does not have this funny and heroic, combative and romantic personality which made me love him. He is handsome, but not so handsome either. I have nothing against actor Harris Dickinson who inspired me more when he played in Kingsman - First Mission, but I find that he does not have enough personality (despite a few funny moments) to be interesting. If I put this Philip so high in the ranking, it's for his relationship with Aurora, which is more developed. Prince Philip and Princess Aurora are very cute, touching. I am currently working on a story about this version of Prince Philip, which will be very unexpected. I can't say much now!
This is the link of the story inspired by Harris Dickinson's character in Kingman - First Mission, one of my most original stories.

2. Richard Madden as Kit in Cinderella (2015) 💎. To start, I'm going to end the suspense directly by saying that Kit is embodied by the most beautiful actor on this list. Richard Madden was already playing one of my favorite characters in Game Of Thrones. Since then, this very handsome gay man has become a sex symbol and a very talented actor who has played in various films where he is always sexy but also charismatic and interesting. In Cinderella (2015), Richard Madden deepens the character of Prince Henry in Cinderella (1950) and its sequels. This discreet character is a pretext and a trophy for Cinderella, he does not have his own existence and personality before the film Cinderella - A Twist in Time (the best Disney animated sequel). Kit is much more enterprising, has a political role, decision-making power. His couple with Ella is better because they learns to know and love each other. Besides, Richard Madden is gorgeous, with bright blue eyes and a dazzling smile, and wears uniforms that suit him very well: beauty is not what defines a prince charming (Disney), but it would be a lie to say that this does not contribute to his assessment. I love that Kit alternates between funny and emotional moments (especially with his dad). I leave you the link of my story inspired by Henry in Cinderella (1950) which is in my opinion one of my best.

Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric in The Little Mermaid (2023) 🌊. This film will have aroused many debates on which I will not go back. What's too bad is that all the negative reviews have overshadowed the positives, like the fact that Prince Eric is really good. Like many people, I was concerned to learn that director Rob Marshall considered the 1989 animated film's Prince Eric lacking in personality (as if to denigrate the basic character in order to praise the live-action's version of Eric). The worst is that the promotion of the film was built on the fact that the notion of consent would be included in the song Kiss the girl, when this was not the case! Still, Prince Eric is a character where I feared the film would change his ending, with him not ending with Ariel. However, this is one of the most beautiful Disney couples in my opinion, very cute (in both animated and live-action versions). Jonah Hauer-King brings Prince Eric a (questionable but coherent) past, and it is shown that he has come to be loved by his people for his talents and skills, that he is a simple man with dreams and values. Admittedly, Eric is courageous, but he is also cultured and funny, protective and dreams of emancipation like Ariel. If Hailey Bailey was excellent in Ariel, it must be said that she forms an awesome couple with Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric. The chemistry between them is undeniable, they have plenty of moments of complicity. If there is a sequel I hope Prince Eric will have a better turnout than in The Little Mermaid 2 - Return to the Sea (2000). Jonah Hauer-King didn't seem pretty enough to me to be Prince Eric at first, because Eric is the second most handsome Disney prince after Philip. Above all, I love Eric for his personality and character, his funny facial expressions and also his concern for others (his dog, his butler, Ariel). In this film, he is more than a Prince, he is a hero and we feel the love between Ariel and him. And i was wrong : he is very handsome as Eric (so tall, great smile, nice hairs). I leave you with an article about Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric.
Surprisingly, this ranking is similar to the one of the movies from these Princes are coming.
7. Mulan (2020)
6. Beauty and the Beast (2017)
5. Maleficent (2014)
4. The Little Mermaid (2023)
3. Aladdin (2019)
2. Maleficent - Mistress of Evil (2019)
1. Cinderella (2015)

And i propose you a little game at the end of this article about your favorite Disney prince from a live action (don't hesitate to tell me your ranking in the comments or by messages).

===============================
7. Mulan (2020)
6. La Belle et la Bête (2017)
5. Maléfique (2014)

I am so bummed, and this is an incredibly long shot that the person I want to get this message to is also on here and will see this, especially since I don’t even remember their AO3 username, but might as well give it a try.
Dear wonderful, talented Love Between Fairy and Devil fic writer whose ongoing 2-chapter fic I read on AO3 at 2am yesterday before having to wake up at 6:30am Friday for work, please I beg you to repost your work.  As I said, it was really late/early so I don’t remember the username and I barely remember the fic title (it was like “A Wooden Heart for a Wooden Head” or something to that effect), but I remember the fic itself so vividly because of how well-written and beautiful it was. It was a Chang Heng/ Dong Fang Qing Cang, Dong Fang Qing Cang/Xiao Lan Hua, Chang Heng & Xiao Lan Hua fic written from CH’s POV - 3rd person, post-finale.
The style of the writing is beautiful and the portrayal of the characters are also very in-character and mature and thoughtful. The longing and internal conflict and then calmness and growth.  Chang Heng is so good at longing for what he couldn’t have, and when he finally takes action, it’s too late, but this time it’s different.  His comfortableness, freedom, and peace with his life as a wandering immortal who occasionally drops in for a visit at the Silent Moon Palace. Him buying a charm for DFQC during his travels because it reminded CH of DFQC’s glazed fire. CH learning how kindhearted Shang Que is and asking him how he wants his story to be told. Also him realizing Shang Que is DFQC’s best friend, his “Dan Yin and Rong Hao rolled into one” was a beautiful comparison used in the fic. Chang Heng’s every 50-year or so anniversary visit to Rong Hao’s grave to share the best wine with him, the little phrase like CH knowing he’s only 2nd in RH’s heart/mind, but RH making CH feel like he’s the first with RH’s treatment of him.  The drama doesn’t show CH’s reaction to discovering his best friend dead, but the fic beautifully described CH’s disbelief, shock, and pain, how he couldn’t remember the event exactly but remember the feeling of the pebbles under his knees when he dropped in shock, how it was DFQC who had to help CH bury RH and Chi Di, but CH had enough sense to manage to carve RH’s name on his gravestone with RH’s sword and wondered how much of his own blood he left behind on the gravestone from the cuts on his hands.  CH’s love and sadness and empathy for Xiao Lan Hua & Xi Yun are also beautifully written.
The writing style and direction of Xiao Lan Hua & Xi Yun characters and personalities are such an interesting and intriguing choice. And the vivid imagery and how CH describes the moment of that’s XLH’s cheery delivery but the cutting words meant to hurt were the Goddess’s, and the little mannerism like that, a conflict and mixed between the two memories/souls/personalities. How it’s “oh there’s a moment and it’s fully XLH, should he call for DFQC, but what if the moment is over before DFQC’s arrival and all that brings is longing and sadness?”
And I could go on and on about the 2-chapter fic with many more run-on sentences and thoughts that probably won’t make sense to anyone who didn’t get a chance read the fic.
Anyway, it was late/early and I was reading it in bed on my phone so I couldn’t leave them a comment to this extent. I did subscribe the fic and was waiting for the next update with bated breath. But now when I went back into my AO3 history to find the fic and possibly do a re-read and leave a comment, there’s a space that said “Deleted Work” instead!  I looked under the drama tag on AO3 and I don’t see the fic anymore either!
So Dear lovely writer, if you happen to be on here, I don’t know why you deleted your work, but your written words were beautiful. The vivid imageries described in a way that I can visualize every scene in detail (like the one where CH is comfortably laying his head on DFQC’s thighs, being occasionally fed grapes by DFQC and XLH as the other two discussed politics and their household decisions, such a domestic and peaceful scene).  Please come back and repost your work and please continue it as well!

So, I don’t have screenshots of this exchange right now, but I was doing my much slower and less screaming rewatch of Love Between Fairy and Devil (henceforth LBFaD) and noticed something in episode 7 which I thought was really neat and also a cool early indicator in the relationships between several different characters.
Now, ofc, ep seven is when we find out that Rong Hao is up to shady shady stuff, after the sabotage going on during the examinations and things that go on between Orchid and DFCQ. But I found it interesting too for the comparison between Rong Hao and DFCQ and how they approach their goals and treat their subordinates.
While the drama never allows DFCQ to be like, evil for longer than 30 seconds without smacking him with a paper tube, and of course, he’s forbidden from being evil to Orchid and has to care for her to achieve his goals, even this early on, we see that his relationship with Shang Que is... while not necessarily friendly in terms of them being bros, is certainly less... Evil Overlord and Terrified Henchman and it’s especially clear coming off of the very tense scene Rong Hao has with Die Yi, where he 1) threatens to kill her for the second time for her mishaps and 2) prods her open wound and clearly gives no fucks about this. The scene opens with her kneeling on the ground clearly terrified of having fucked up something relatively minor to their plans yet again. Like yes, they haven’t recovered Chidi Woman’s destiny book, and Orchid isn’t dead, but these things are relatively small setbacks and stakes I feel, because you know, they could always try again, *and* Rong Hao has an excellent scapegoat to pin the whole thing on. He’s not actually in any danger!
In contrast, the smash cut to DFCQ and Shang Que, where, specifically, Shang Que nearly allowed Orchid to turn into Orchid Snacks for the evil beast (which, btw, would’ve also rendered DFCQ super dead and is not just a mild hitch in their plans) has DFCQ ask Shang Que what he thinks the punishment should be. Shang Que responds with “I’m willing to take whatever punishment my lord gives.” and while DFQC then makes some grizzly threats about what he’d do if Orchid is ever harmed while Shang Que is supposed to be watching her, he leaves it to some threats and basically no actual consequences. Again, if Orchid actually got turned into a snack he’d be super dead as per the rules of the curse they have going on and Shang Que also knows this.
The contrast is just!!! super stark!!! While the drama started out telling us that DFCQ is literally The Most Evil, has no feelings, is heartless, ruthless tyrant, etc etc, the very simple contrast between how he and Rong Hao interact with people who are subordinate to them and how they react to mistakes and setbacks is...telling. Especially for what happens later in the drama.
