My thoughts on the Mario movie/trailer so far:

- Alright first off, I’m HELLA excited. I cried tears of joy watching the trailer. I’ve been wanting a Mario movie for over 10 years, and it’s finally happening. That’s practically my whole childhood!

- Who are the penguins? Are they the same ones from SM64? Is this illumination trying to corrupt the idea of Mario by adding their own dumb characters? Also why does that king penguin have such a deep voice?

- The character design is creepily realistic. I don’t necessarily mind, but I was expecting it to be like Mario’s current Nintendo design and animation. It’s still cool nonetheless and not nearly as bad as the original sonic design for the sonic movie.

- Mario and Luigi sound VERY different from their game selves, which we’ve known for quite some time. In the brief second I could hear Luigi, I was like “excuse me do I know you?” And I love Chris Pratt, but as Mario? He doesn’t even attempt an Italian accent. It makes it hard to recognize that these are the same characters I grew up with. I really wish they would have had Charles Martinet as Mario and Luigi, but unfortunately they’re relying on celebrity recognition to attract their audiences. I’m not giving up hope yet. Maybe I’ll watch the movie and find that the voices are actually fitting.

- Bowser sounds different too, but the voice fits. It’s obviously not the voice from the growls and roars you hear in modern Mario games, but it’s a cool interpretation of the character. It seems a little high pitched for Bowser, but hearing him say “OPEN THE GAAAATES” made me squeal like a fan girl. It kind of seems like an upgraded version of Bowser’s voice in Super Mario Sunshine.

- Everything is just so different in some ways that it doesn’t feel like the Mario Bros I know. And it’s not going to be. It’s basically any old illumination movie, just with Mario characters and scenery as the inspiration. Idk if that made sense. Does anyone else think it’s straying too far from the Mario Bros we know and love?

- Perhaps I’m being too harsh. This all makes it seem like I’m not excited for it, which is FAR from the truth. Even though it’s probably not what I’m expecting, I think it will be amazing in its own unique way and I can’t wait for it! 6 months from today!!

As much as everybody's justifiably railing on Chris Pratt for his acting, after watching the new trailer I honestly don't think Anya Taylor-Joy is a very good fit for Peach either. The problem isn't that they're bad actors, it's that they are not voice actors. When I hear Anya's or Chris's voice I don't picture Peach and Mario, I picture two regular adult people who wouldn't stand out in a coffee shop. Which isn't the point of animated movies and voice acting! ESPECIALLY with Mario! This is supposed to be a movie about cartoonish characters in a video game fantasy world saving the day, and their voices should fit with that theme. That's why Charles Martinet's Mario voice works so well, because it makes sense for what Mario is supposed to be. This trend of giving voice acting specific jobs to non-voice actors who have no experience with this kind of work is detrimental to animation and film! It is removing job opportunities from people who have spent their lives learning this craft and handing it over to a celebrity with no experience just because they're famous. The beauty of voice acting and animation in general is how you are completely creating a character. The whole point of voice acting is that you don't point to a character in a film and say, "hey, that's Chris Pratt" the point is that people will point to the charcater and go "oh, new character!" This movie is more and more frustrating to me the more I realize how much it feels like a money grab exclusively because of the casting. The animation, the music, and the effects are all completely perfect for a Mario movie, but so many of the acting choices feel like someone just rifled through a list of "100 most popular celebrities" and chose whoever was vaguely similar to "average white man voice" or "average white woman voice". No matter how popular these people are or how good they are at acting in front of a camera or on stage, they can not voice act.

IF YOU WANT TO SEE THE MARIO MOVIE!

- Jack Black’s Bowser is as amazing as you think he’ll be

- Chris Pratt’s Mario is good. Not GREAT, but he does actually put effort into it and it didn’t kill the movie as much as I thought it would.

- The animation is gorgeous. Like, seriously. The action was fun and bouncy, the settings were the perfect blend of silly cartoon and legitimately pretty, and the animation of the power-up was especially fun.

- Don’t expect a super complex story. It is Mario at the end of the day.

- There are a lot of fun easter eggs regarding classic Nintendo games, especially classic Mario games.

- Don’t get your hopes up for Wario, Waluigi, Daisy, or Rosalina; There are cameos for Pauline and the Yoshis though!

- The music is awesome. Like, it’s reimagining’s of classic Mario soundtracks as cinematic music and its really a ton of fun!

- All in all, a good movie. Above all else its just FUN. I definitely recommend it, at the very least for the eyecandy and music.

- You WILL be disappointed how little Luigi is in the movie

- They make Luigi the most likeable little guy and BARELY USE HIM

- Guys you dont understand LUIGI’S MOM IS PROUD OF HIM :( Why do they not use him more

- There needs to be a Luigi’s Mansion movie let him be the main character or else
