clocks in matteo jwhj 0175's Goncharov
I know we’re all a bit tired of talking about the clock symbolism in Goncharov, but there’s a fascinating story about it that I want to share.
So This post says that it was considered lost media until 2006, but that’s only in hindsight. The first full screening of the film didn’t take place until 2010, due to Russian mob interference. The Russian mob tried to destroy every print of it because of its critical portrayal of Soviet era government (and likely because of its heavily homoerotic undertones between Sofia/Katya and Andrey/Goncharov (and even Goncharov/Mario, although that is less obviously intentional).
But about the clocks: Christian Marclay’s art piece The Clock (2010) is a 24-hr supercut of clocks in films and television. The work itself functions as a clock, with the timepieces and clockfaces counting the hours, seconds, and minutes in real time. The film was shown at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Tate, The Lincoln Center, etc.
In 2006, while working on the idea for The Clock, he purchased two film cannisters from a garage sale, and used a couple clips from them to create The Clock.
Well, it turned out that he’d somehow come across some rough edits from a couple scenes from the lost Scorsese epic. Goncharov features twice—a shot of the clocktower from the dénouement, and the shot of Andrey’s watch (from the scene where he is waiting for his mark). When The Clock originally debuted, audiences were struck (pun intended) by the powerful imagery and uneasy tone of these two shots in particular. When asked about their source, Marclay shrugged and shared the story of finding them at a garage sale. (finding a full copy and restoring it is another long story that I can’t even get into rn bc it’s so complicated).
So even if we’re tired of talking about that symbolism, it’s literally because of its powerful imagery that we even know it exists.
In fact, Goncharov was still so controversial in Russia that The Clock had to be edited to show there. In 2011, The Clock showed at the Garage Center for Contemporary Art in Moscow. It was mired in controversy, and was re-screened with different clips substituted for the Goncharov appearances. Due to copyright laws, many scenes and clips of The Clock are technically illegal, and Russian interference made Marclay remove those clips entirely, which is the only version that exists now!! I haven't seen the original version bc thats now lost media too!! Anyway. CLOCKS. They're important.

My favorite part of Goncharov (1973) is the ballroom scene and I’m so sad that I don’t see it talked about more often. The symbolism of the twelve dancing couples around Goncharov and Katya is just beautiful. Each one is a number on the clock face and Goncharov and Katya are the hands. The thing that really sealed the deal for me was when at the climax of the song Goncharov dips Katya and you see her look towards Sofia, and Goncharov extends his arm the opposite direction to Andrey. After they come back together to continue dancing and you can see in their eyes that they have this understanding that neither of them are in love with the other anymore. They both already knew this but here they come to a sort of mutual understanding and the tension just melts away. It’s obvious they still care for each other but not in that way anymore. This scene was just so beautifully done both visually and with the character development I could gush about it for hours.

is anyone going to talk about the way katya and sofia were looking at each other on the boat scene? when they were about to kiss but were interrupted by the chiming of the clock? the clock fucking represents katya’s obligation to her loveless marriage with goncharov, the patriarchal standards of the time holding her back from the love that she chooses versus her toxic marriage that ends up destroying them both!! they both mirror each other, both people who cannot love as they choose forced to destroy one another. orbiting each other. every time they try to leave they are interrupted by the clock. the clock. the clock. always the goddamn clock.

my mom really loves the nightclub scene in Goncharov where they are confronted by the guy with a machine gun and then have to flee through the clock painting

The clock symbolism in Goncharov (1973) is soooo good
I really loved how the grandfather clock in Goncharov and Katya’s house stopped working when their relationship started falling apart, and how they didnt notice for so long (just like how they kept up the act of their marriage for so long after they stopped loving one another)

Does Rock Around the Clock by Bill Haley actually have Goncharov vibes musically? No. Did I put it on my Goncharov Vibes playlist anyway? Yes, because if I can't make jokes about the dramatic irony I'll cry.

opinions about goncharov??
Heard great stuff about it. We should totally get together and watch it sometime.
Specially obsessed with the clock symbolism and the idea of time being predestined to end, a fate one cannot escape. You can try to change but your efforts are futile. Despite your inherent hate of the person you've become, you will never be able to overcome your version of yourself as set by destiny.
Goncharov was destined to a self destructive personal hatred, and in trying to destroy this version of himself he ruined everything around him, ending in the loss of his own life, the one he once hoped he could redirect towards a brighter future.
At least that's what I heard, anyway. Haven't watched it yet.

M'y Friend who is doing some realy cool stuff here :
Also yhey helped me Photoshoping my midjourney goncharov posters Fanart . I created the prompt based on screenshots of the sceen when Andrei walks at nigth with Goncharov, crossing the piazza dante, only to stop on the step of Goncharov's door, unable to express with words or action the profound desire he has for Goncharov charisma, business deal, and maybe the man underneath all of it . After he friendly slaps Goncharov's harm and keeps his hand on his New business partner shoulder for just a litle bit too long , he turns back waving good buy. Goncharov enters his dark appartement, takes the cigarette Katya only lit but never smoked in the sceen when she drank coffe with Cybill, the contrast between the previous warm and ligth moment that took place the morning of the last day of autumn and the cold nigth of winter were Goncharov try to feel the warmth of his relationship with Katya, but even if it's the first nigth of winter "the cold never pitied anyone" as katya answered when goncharov tried to rekindle thery flame. He is left with only the red of her lipstck stainig one end of a cigarette. A bitter proxy for a kiss. Goncharov Watchers Andreï recross the piazza dante, alone ,under the ticking of the tower clock . Season change, Time is passing, and a moment, a possibility was Lost, goncharov is alone. For the first Time goncharov is not plotting , intimidating , figthing, lying ,bargening or joking. He is silent and in it's silence we can feel the truths that are left unsaid.
This moment is for
