Fluent Freshman - Part 11
PREVIOUS
FF could admit that he may not be working with a full tank at the moment.
He had not slept very well the night before.
He had watched a lot of horror movies (a genre that he generally does not consume because his mind is already a scary enough place).
He was not able to go see his Grandma and he was going to miss the traditional(tm) Black Friday extravaganza that he and his Grandma did every Black Friday since he was little and encountered the horrible truth about Santa and she’d let him in on when / where most of his Christmas gifts were obtained. (The answer was not the North Pole under the watchful eye of elves. He had cried himself to sleep at the revelation but Gran always had a way of making the worst moments of his life tolerable.)
He may have eaten just…a bit too much pie?
He definitely ate too much turkey.
His stomach is killing him because he had forgotten to take his pepto when he had slammed that five hour energy.
His heart may actually break out of his rib cage with how hard it’s beating in his chest.
He’s been listening to Andrew and Captain Neil go back and forth for the last hour and a half between discussing Aaron’s recent mess ups, to what they’ll do to one another with a locked door between them and the world, to Andrew complaining that Neil’s hand is sweaty, to Neil saying Yes and Andrew’s hand is no longer in Neil’s and-
He clenches his eyes close.
And Andrew has swerved back into the lane for the third time in the last five minutes while saying something unrepeatable about his plans for Captain Neil and the whipped cream.
FF does not handle swerving cars very well.
He hears Andrew say something that sounds like it could lead to a very uncomfortable yeast infection for Captain Neil didn’t properly rinse off afterwards.
The car swerves over the rumble strip.
A fear far stronger than his fear of what Andrew could do to him overtakes him.
“I don’t like swerving cars. So, I’m going to ask that you focus on the road and keep your hands on the steering wheel.” FF says so panicked that he sounds calm and he watches as both Neil and Andrew stiffen at the sound of his voice. “If you can’t, then I’m going to ask that you pull over and let me out.” He offers a second option and a part of him is just amazed that his voice doesn’t crack even once. “I’m fine with either option.” He says.
He says both are fine but…
Honestly he hopes Andrew chooses the first option as he looks at the dark and lonely highway.
He looks back up at the front seat and both Neil and Andrew are looking straight forward. Andrew’s hands are on the steering wheel.
“Thanks.” He says and returns his attention to back over Aaron’s head.
The rest of the ride to Columbia is blessedly quiet. Aaron and Nicky wake up when they get off of the interstate and Nicky has the good grace to try and wipe the drool out of FF’s hair while Aaron seems unbothered by the wet spot he left of FF’s shoulder.
They get out of the car and they each grab their own bag in exhausted silence. Nicky is barely managing to put one foot in front of the other and before FF can do or say anything Nicky is in his room and has locked his door.
The room that FF had been planning on sleeping on the floor of because Nicky had told him he could so that FF would not drink 20 5-hour energies over the course of the weekend.
But Nicky had looked really tired.
So he is given a general tour by a very quiet Captain Neil and FF forces himself not to think about the cooler that Andrew had brought to, what he assumes is, Andrew’s bedroom before it was brought to the kitchen. He gets shown where the blankets and pillows that Kevin uses are and FF nods in quiet acceptance even knowing that he is going to spend the night going over Katakana flashcards and maybe up his literacy on Kanji to a second grader’s level.
Captain Neil wishes him a good night while Andrew gives him a nod and it is the last time he sees Captain Neil that night.
It is not the last time he sees Andrew.
***
Andrew comes out of his room to go get two glasses of water nearly 2 and a half hours later. The house is silent and dark. He is pretty sure him and Neil are the only two up.
He is wrong.
He comes out into the living room on his way to the kitchen and finds FF going through flashcards at a rapid pace. He walks a little closer to see what it is but the flashcards aren’t even right side up half of the time.
He thinks about the car ride.
‘I don’t like swerving cars.’
FF had said it so matter of factly. He was uncomfortable with the swerving.
Andrew had told FF recently about the words he didn’t like.
It felt like FF was offering at least something of himself back to Andrew for the first time.
Andrew thinks about how once his hands had gone back to the steering wheel FF had leaned back into his seat and stared out the window.
Andrew has at various points tried to look up what FF’s circumstances were but searching news sites for someone named ‘Smith’ with no first name to work off of was an exercise in futility.
Neil has lamented many times to Andrew about his bizarre jealousy over how unknowable Smith is. “He’s learning new languages, keeping a low profile, and playing Exy. It’s everything that I wanted in my freshman year and couldn’t manage because Riko pissed me off so much! It’s just kind of hard to see someone living my dream.” He says.
Andrew had punched him in the arm for that one.
“My old dream!” Neil had said and Andrew almost punched him again for the smile he flashed but had ended up kissing his stupid pretty face instead.
Where was he?
Right.
FF didn’t like swerving cars.
It didn’t necessarily have to be the trauma that lead to that aversion. Andrew certainly hadn’t had anything scare him on a plane but he still hated flying.
Still.
“The flash card is upside down.” He says and watches as FF pauses in his shuffling before righting that card and flipping to the next one which was turned to the side as far as Andrew could tell.
FF should be asleep.
FF is not asleep.
It might be Andrew’s fault that his friend can’t sleep.
“It won’t happen again.” He says and FF turns and stares at him blankly for a few seconds before he nods his acceptance.
It’s nice having a friend who understands what he means without needing to explain every little thing.
***
FF thinks he might have double-dosed on the 5-hour energy.
He also thinks he might currently be able to see through time.
His flashcards are making so much sense right now.
Then Andrew had come up and it truly was a miracle that he did not shit himself considering the sheer amount of apple pie still making its way through his system. That’s a lot of fiber for one body and he’s sure the 2-3 Five Hour energies he has taken are not helping his plight in that regard.
“It won’t happen again.” Is what Andrew says and in an instant FF feels his stomach drop to his feet. He nods blankly and watches as Andrew nods back before the man went to the kitchen and left with two tall glasses of water.
‘It won’t happen again’
FF has asked Andrew for TWO favors today.
TWO WHOLE FAVORS.
WHAT WAS HE THINKING?
The answer was that he WASN’T.
Even if FF had paid back one of those favors with the sheer power of his granny’s pie there was the case of the secondary favor he’d asked for in the car.
‘It won’t happen again’
There won’t be anymore favors for FF. He’d used up any mercy his grandma’s pie had bought him.
He considers the time pulls out his phone and goes through some saved text files on his phone.
It’s time for guns even bigger than his grandma’s apple pie.
He takes another five hour energy and knows that he won’t be sleeping a wink. He looks up groceries stores that are open this early on Black Friday, he grabs his wallet and with immense fear in his heart grabs the keys Aaron had dropped into a bowl by the front entrance.
He needs the ingredients for his great-grandma’s brownies.

1. favorite episode
A Night At Rosie's, at the moment I have so many favorites (and there are so many episodes...), but A Night At Rosie's lives rent-free in my brain, ready to make me smile any time I remember it.
8. favorite "Hawkeye has a mental breakdown" episode
Does Depressing News count? It's not quite a breakdown the way he normally has them, but honestly, his behavior is so obsessive and single-minded that it feels like a break from his regular level of mental health. He focuses so hard on one folly of the Army that it takes him a little while to notice the absurdity of the reporter. And he kind of takes a vacation from interacting with other people and sleeping (and I don't remember if we see him eat), so it seems like at least a breakdown from his normal. And it's just so good. I can't remember the first time I saw it, but a little bit of me always worries more when he puts on his dress uniform (Hawkeye would never get dressed up for an Army photo!) and then I still feel the relief of him blowing up the monument. And it's hilarious and a little unhinged.
10. unpopular opinion
Sometimes I have no idea which opinions are popular and which aren't. But I think my least popular opinion is that Potter is also a victim of the Army.
I know he's shitty many times and a problematic part of the unfortunate shift in tone in the show towards being more pro-military (or at least more forgiving of the military), but his story shows me a victim too (victims often perpetuate systems of abuse/trauma). A young boy caught up in a sense of patriotic duty (and later, horse girl levels of obsession with horses) in the "War to end all wars," who becomes an Army doctor because he thinks it's a great career in peace time. And then he's married and probably has at least one child by the time the Depression hits, and the military is a stable job. And then he finds himself in Europe again, at an age where a military career makes sense (he’s fallen victim to the sunk cost fallacy at this point) and in a war that seems just (and he’s definitely been brainwashed about the value of a military career by this point). Then when he thinks it’s finally all over (again) and he’s near retirement, he ends up in Korea, a war that makes him question the entire basis of his life. He should’ve questioned more, and I wish that had been something they explored better.
It honestly reminds me a little of my grandfather. His case was very, very different, but the Army gave him a career. He was one of the many people in WWII who had posts close enough to the developing computer technology to be offered a job at IBM after the war. He had a very different experience in a very different war (and then wouldn’t talk about it or apparently offer any opinion on Korea or Vietnam after that, although I wasn’t old enough to ask him about that before he died). I know it’s different, but it makes me give Potter the benefit of the doubt because I think he has a really complicated relationship with the military, and his greatest sin is that he is uncritical of the status quo and the military.
17. best quote
I have a lot of favorites, but I always come back to:
“For your amusement and bemusement, I give you the human person: thumb and fingers flexing madly, straining to keep aloft the leaden realities of life: ignorance, death, and madness. Thus we create for ourselves the illusion that we have power. That we are in control. That we are loved.”
From S4E18, Hawkeye

He-man.org will close in 5 days.
He-man.org has been a staple of the Masters of the Universe community since the early days, originating as an email list that worked to document episodes before anything (not footage, not lists, nothing) was available online. It grew into a sprawling, multi-faceted beast of a thing, including an encyclopedia (an in-house wiki), merch lists, a marketplace, forums, anything you could think of.
Several years ago now, the main site went down for updates/maintenance. For a few weeks, we were told, maybe months. The forums remained open for fans to communicate, and barring a period of downtime earlier this year things were going smoothly.
Yesterday, the owner of the site, Val Staples, announced the site would be closed on November 14th, 2023. Six days later. We are currently attempting to contact him, to see if he’s interested in selling, and if he means closed as in “no new posts” or closed as in deleted entirely. Regardless of its eventual fate, the archiving of these forums is essential to preserving the history of the franchise, the fandom, and the brand.
Tumblr media
TO SHE-RA (and MotU) FANS SPECIFICALLY: I have personally used these forums to answer questions that could be answered nowhere else. Had I not had access to them, I would never have been able to prove that Purrsia was fake, or found so much unpublished concept art, or discovered that Scott “Toyguru” Neitlich personally wrote Catra’s MOTUC bio (even if he’s put off answering my questions about it for over a year now). Forum members have conducted interviews with the likes of Jon Seisa, Cathy Larson, Janice Varney-Hamlin—essential figures in the very foundations of POP, and those interviews revealed and recorded priceless information for future generations (me! you! us!) to find. Did you know Cathy Larson named Adora? That she originally pushed for “Dorian”, after her own daughter? We cannot let this treasure trove disappear into the ether(ia).
TO THE UNAFFILIATED: Please help. Pretty please. If you’ve ever liked my art or my writing or my haphazard blogging, ever, at all, consider archiving just one board. Just one page. Literally anything helps. I am spiraling into madness & this is my library of Alexandria. The mythical one that was totally unique and persevered nowhere else and was destroyed in a single cataclysmic event. Pretty pretty please help.
HOW TO HELP:
Archive.org has several ways to upload shit but most of them are longer term than “a few days” so we’re focusing on two (which can be run simultaneously): Save Page Now, and browser extensions. From their help page:
1. Save Page Now
Put a URL into the form, press the button, and we save the page. You will instantly have a permanent URL for your page. Please note, this method only saves a single page, not the whole site.
Tumblr media
We want to keep outlinks and screenshots wherever possible. The Archive does not keep your IP address, so your submission is anonymous.
2. Browser extensions and add-ons
Install the Wayback Machine Chrome extension in your browser. Go to a page you want to archive, click the icon in your toolbar, and select Save Page Now. We will save the page and give you a permanent URL.
Tumblr media
One plus to installing the extension is that as you surf around, when you run into a missing page they will alert you if we have a saved copy.
More extensions, apps, and add-ons:
Firefox add-on
Safari Extension
iOS app
Android app
I strongly encourage you to use these tools even if you aren’t helping with this project/after it ends. Documenting and preserving information is essential in this day and age & The Internet Archive is at the heart of it. Please support them however you can.
I’m serious about paying you, though I may need more communication with folks I don’t know so we can coordinate/verify shit gets done. I think this is a worthwhile pursuit in itself but I recognize your time is valuable & like, people gotta eat. DM me if you’re interested and we’ll talk. I may need to adjust pay depending how many people bite but I’ll do what I can

I'm pretty sure it was you. And because the search is broken I can't find it. Could you point at it for me again? Sorry for bothering u of all people about this
Heya! This is no bother at all. I'll make a new answer here for ease:
The desktop browser extension you need is Xkit Rewritten. I have it installed on Firefox. Its icon is a purple square with a white X inside.
Tumblr media
The category the option to restore previous reblog links is under Tweaks. It's the blue-ticked option shown in this screenshot, and reads "Restore links to individual posts in the post header."

Feathered Inconvenience (a tumblr x twitter fanfic)
i lost a bet, have at it kiddos!! posting chapter 2 when this hits 5K :]
~ chapter 1
Escaping to a forest after a midlife crisis wasn’t what Tumblr had on his to-do list, especially not after flunking his presentation. It’s not like his presentations were bad, they were excellent, he detailed what his company asked for and brought in ideas that filled their blanks. Another note, having his rival, Twitter, taking a trip away from the office made it easy for him to excel and succeed, it was all going perfectly. So, what was the issue?
Simple, he was bored, and it felt like shit. He loved his job, but it was getting boring, with the same circulation of events but in different fonts and colors. He needed inspiration, something that would bring fascination back into his vision. Tumblr’s back slid against a huge tree, speckles of light shining through the leaves and branches. He closed his eyes and begged his mind to be quiet.
“Maybe I just need to change the office theme again.” Tumblr told himself, crossing his arms while deep in thought.
The suited gent shook his head, rejecting his own idea and kept thinking. He always knew what to do, what to make out of an issue. He was great, that’s why some higher ups favored him. It was also the reason he stuck around for such a long time too. Tumblr loved his job, but this, being stuck due to the lack of anyone qualified to be in his place, is slowly crushing him.
Tumblr’s chest rose as he took a deep breath in. He needed an escape. No, he needed to stay. No, he needed…
What did he need?
Tumblr, with his head hanging in defeat, pushed himself off of the tree, squinting his eyes as he stepped away from the shade. He’s just going to go back to his apartment, and take a day off to really get himself far away from this rut. But a small noise stopped him in his tracks.
A bird chirped to itself on the ground, one of its wings appearing to be hurt. Tumblr simply tilted his head and walked to the feathered guy. He was a tall shadow to the bird, so it was normal of the bird to try and scramble away. Tumblr crouched down, and lent his arm out with his hand open, inviting the bird to just hop on.
“Not gonna hurt you, I promise.” Tumblr said calmly, a tinge of a tired smile appears. The man must’ve been really weary, because the bird really seemed to be considering his help.
After careful consideration, the bird hopped onto the palm of Tumblr’s hand, and flattened in a relaxed way. Tumblr hummed and stood back up, a hand hovering over the bird in case the sun was too bright for it.
“What’s wrong with your wings, lil guy?” Tumblr asked while slowly inspecting. He didn’t really expect a bird to understand or reply but it did; the bird’s beak pointed at its wing, crooked, ouch. While checking for any more injuries, Tumblr noticed the mud and leaves covering the bird’s exquisite light blue feathers. He admired it and smiled to himself. Blue was his favorite color, unironically.
“Good thing I caught you before any firefoxes did, huh?” Tumblr chuckled, as the bird shivered at the fact it could have already been eaten up.
Without any introductions or directions, Tumblr walked out of the forest, not only with a temporary distraction, but also a feathery friend. Yes, it wasn't the best answer to his crisis, but it was something to get his mind off of it. Maybe after helping this bird, his mind would clear up.
Unbeknownst to him, there was a group of people looking for the very thing he was determined to take care of.
— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — —
Tumblr dug around his pockets to look for keys to his apartment, all while still cupping the blue puff of feathers on his other hand. If anyone walked by him, they’d shoot a confused look. It’s not like this was the first time Tumblr brought home an animal, he almost brought a horse up once because it looked goofy.
The jingles of his keys echoed through the hall, Tumblr paid no mind, but the bird was shifting and peeking around at the tiniest of noises. “Chill, it’s just my keys.” Tumblr replied to his jittery feathered friend.
Entering the apartment, Tumblr flickered a lamp that was by the door, the once dark room was painted with a warm orange hue. His place was nice, packed with folders and papers, and a weirdly large amount of red yarn. Tumblr’s humble abode is catastrophically homey.
Tumblr threw his keys on the cluttered coffee table and flopped on the couch, and placed the small bird on his chest. He sighed and threw his head back, exhausted. This day was tiring, but he had a friend with him.
He could barely take care of himself, but he really was looking forward to nursing his new friend back to health. As he yawned, Tumblr grabbed a pillow and scooped the bird off of him and on the pillow. He patted his feathered friend on the head with his finger and stood up.
“I’m taking a nap, little guy, you better rest up too.” Tumblr’s voice faintly heard as he walked to his bedroom. Within minutes, Tumblr’s snores comically seeped out of the slight agar door of his room.
Tumblr was having a good nap, even in his work shirt and pants on, maybe this was what he needed, a nap, that was until he got woken up by the sound of folders falling. He sat up aggressively, fumbled around to get his trusty baseball bat on the floor. Tumblr’s mind was too tired to think of something intimidating to yell out to whoever was making the noise.
As he creeped to the door of his bedroom with the bat, Tumblr took a shaky breath in and peeked out. He swung the door open and raised his bat to aim, but froze in his place. He didn't expect much, maybe an intruder who wanted to steal his magic wand set or his valuable shoe laces.
What Tumblr saw before his eyes was the very reason he was doing great at work, the reason other people in his office were doing good; he saw Twitter in the middle of his clutter, looking as shocked as Tumblr was.
“What the absolute fuck…” Tumblr pointed the tip of the bat at Twitter, “...Is going on?”

Dreamwidth and privacy, Dreamwidth and apps
I got an ask about Dreamwidth that has since completely vanished from my inbox and my activity feed, but it had some important questions that I wanted to answer, so I'm going to try and address them anyway:
"How's Dreamwidth on privacy? Do they data mine?"
They only take as much information as they are legally obligated to and/or is needed to make the site actually function. You are the only one who gets to decide how much of that you share with the public, or how little.
Dreamwidth makes the money it needs to run the site entirely through its userbase. They do not sell our data and do not want to.
"Do they have a mobile app too?"
No, and they probably never will. I know this is a disappointment for a lot of Tumblr users, but it's one of the primary ways that Dreamwidth can ensure that it's free to use for all users, and that we can post as much NSFW stuff there as we want.
That said, the Dreamwidth team has done everything they can to make the site friendly to mobile browsing! IIRC there are even some layouts that are particularly friendly to mobile browsing. Install Firefox/Mozilla on your phone, or a clone of it you particularly like, and log in through that, and you should be able to use the site just as well as you could from a desktop computer.

Hello! Would you ever consider bringing back different post types, especially audio? I appreciate that audio posts now display the artist, song title, and album name, but unfortunately newer audio posts don’t play in Tumblr-based music players like egoisticalgoat.de or robinpx.github.io/boombox because they’re read as text posts. Thank you for reading!
Answer: Hey there, @stepintomusic!
Sadly, the answer here is no. We’ve been moving away from legacy post types and towards the Neue Post Format—a format that allows multiple types of media in the same post—for many years. The new features available in NPF basically guarantee that we won’t ever switch back to the legacy format.
(If you’re interested in peeking behind the scenes here, there are a few posts about NPF over at @engineering.)
Now, to get into the meat of the issue. While it would be amazing if we could support every third-party tool forever, the reality is that we can’t. We’re a surprisingly small team to begin with, and even if we weren’t, that support would come at a cost.
To start, there’s the development tax. Now, would it have been cool to ensure all third-party tools (and all custom themes) worked 100% perfectly with posts stored as NPF before releasing NPF to the public? Yeah, it would have been… for third-party tools and custom themes. For us, it would have meant delaying NPF (and all the features it brings with it) for months, possibly years. Imagine a 2023 where Tumblr still doesn’t have polls: that’s the alternate future we’re talking about here.
And then, there’s our maintenance tax. The engine that powers Tumblr themes is already incredibly complicated—complicated to the point that we’re already finding it difficult to maintain and add things like, as you mentioned, NPF audio metadata. If, every time we found some third-party tool that doesn’t play nice with the latest changes, we tried to make an affordance for it… the engine would just become even more complex. And it would do so quickly, and complex to the point of being impossible to keep up with as a maintainer.
There’s a great article here by a former Mozilla developer about the pitfalls of prioritizing a third-party ecosystem over your own software. Did you know that Firefox was essentially a single-threaded application until 2018? This meant it would still visually lock up when saving files to disk, or collecting crash data. Chrome launched in 2008 and was multiprocess from the start. But it took Firefox ten years to catch up because supporting all existing third-party add-ons was seen as necessary. (Spoiler alert: in the end, they had to drop support for those add-ons anyway.)
My own recommendation around third-party software like this is: get in contact with its developer! If something in their software isn’t working, there’s nobody more qualified to update it. (Or, if they’ve abandoned the project but had made it open-source, maybe someone else could step up to maintain it. Maybe you! You never know until you try.)
I talked about the maintenance tax from the first-party side, but let’s talk about it from the third-party side, too. As a theme author and add-on developer myself, I have long accepted that the cost of maintaining these things can never be zero. When your software interacts with an online service, and that online service is being actively maintained, your software also needs to be maintained.
I hope all this has been enlightening! Thanks for your question, and please, have a great day.

A call for aid from Firefox Users
I have absolutely no fucking idea how to solve these problems, and there are asks with no answers all over the internet elsewhere that are years old.
There is a weirdly hostile atmosphere on Reddit's Firefox boards to asking questions about features Firefox doesn't seem to have. And obviously, official support forums are about as helpful as they ever are. Given that I've seen and reblogged countless extremely informative posts about Firefox stuff on Tumblr, I just have to hope one of you guys knows answers to some of these issues.
Because I want to move away from Chrome. I really, really do. It is a constant source of stress and fear at this point. Google is an insanely evil fucking company and I despise them, and admire Firefox's stances on privacy and commitment to user security. But I cannot use a browser that lacks so many of the organizational elements I'm used to using in order to deal with my extreme neurodivergence and inability to process information all at once combined with my tendency towards flitting from one train of thought to another constantly.
Using Firefox (I've tried to switch five times over six or seven years) in the past has been overwhelming and stressful and completely devoid of certain features I could use to control those feelings on browsers like Chrome, Opera, and even Safari.
So if anyone has any solutions or suggestions for the specific issues I describe below, it would be an enormous weight off my shoulders, and help me feel a lot safer than I do now.
I'll admit that my tab fever is insane, and I've regularly racked up 2000+ tabs on Chrome. But I can sleep/unload just about all of those tabs constantly, making it so I can keep my trains of thought completely paused without the slightest impact on my computer's performance while I work on something else, and come right back to them without having to dig through the Bookmark system. And the way I generally keep that insane number of bookmarks organized is with separate windows and TAB GROUPING. Bless tab grouping, the saviour of my sanity. With that feature, I can have a completely organized tab tree with color coding, searchable groups, easily group and ungroup tabs or move them to different windows, and I can manage all of them from the same UI I'm managing ungrouped tabs from.
This is a feature which Firefox appears to fundamentally lack, despite apparently having had it implemented fully at some point.
I will say that I tried several addons before making this post, specifically Simple Tab Groups, which was atrocious, and Panorama View actually looks fantastic, but also.... Firefox has placed a security warning on that one. Great.
So if anyone knows of a hidden browser settings option, an overlooked tab grouping addon, or some other way to implement that feature on Firefox, I would be eternally in your debt. I just do not have the ability to process or work on a browser that I can only have like forty tabs open without losing track of everything I'm doing because they're all on a single ribbon. Or completely overloading my RAM.
On that note, is there any setting to make the browser use less memory? I've had the core process run up to almost a dozen gigs of RAM with only twenty tabs open, and there's absolutely no way it needed all that processing power for four YouTube tabs and a bunch of settings pages.
Lastly, there are a number of times while I was using Firefox that I lost power or the program crashed (and it crashed a LOT) and I lost everything. Every tab, every bit of work I was doing at the time, with no way to recover them. I've had that happen with Chrome too, but WAY less often, and when it recovers all my tabs it does so while PRESERVING MY TAB GROUPS, and it also doesn't load every tab in until I actually move to that tab. Firefox loads every tab it's recovering all at once, which usually completely locks up my computer.
At this point I'm pretty much only using Firefox to watch YouTube videos past the adblock, despite desperately wanting to transfer literally everything over to a browser that I KNOW is the safer and better option. But every time I've tried, the total inability to organize like I used to, losing all my progress and being unable to regain it whatsoever, or just using up four times the amount of resources that my browsing would on another platform has drive me away. I don't want to be driven away. I want to solve this, but I've had to accept that I can't do that alone.
I greatly appreciate any help or advice anyone can give. Even if just only one of these questions gets answered or only one of these problems gets solved, that's a win in my books. And thank you for reading, even if you don't have any of the answers I'm looking for.

OrpiKnight's FAQ FAQ
For the Neil Gaiman Tumblr FAQ
GO S3 was announced! Will you be updating the FAQ still? Yep! :)
--- Who? Vel (blog OrpiKnight)
Why? I'm excited about Good Omens 2, I was looking through the Asks on Neil Gaiman's blog anyway, and I like having a constructive outlet when I'm going through so much information. And there were a lot of repeat questions. I mainly made it for me and my friends for reference, but then decided to go ahead and throw it out into the Tumblr void, too.
Will you be actively updating it with new questions/answers? Maybe. Wait and see. (Edit: Yes. I can't seem to stop myself.) *When I update things, I usually put the new questions at the bottom of their section, even if they might fit next to something else in it better. This is just to make new ones easier to find. Later on I might reorganize them.
Can you put it in a Tumblr post? No. It's too much information, it can hang out on docs (which is 30+ pages). I'm pretty sure I would hit a word limit if I put it on here. Or break my dash. Or accidentally delete it. *You don't need a Google account to access it. I have tested this signed out on non-Chrome browsers. (I use Firefox btw)
You missed some Asks. Yeah... there is no way I could get all of them. I had to draw the line somewhere.
Some of the questions are strange. Don't I know it. Edit: But I do like to put in all sorts of questions. Sometimes there are things that don't even occur to me to ask that Neil says he gets constant questions about (like the ice cream/ice lolly). Sometimes there are things that I don't realize need clarifying (like "two consenting bicycle repairmen"). One person can ask a creatively specific question that other people are quietly wondering about. I also like the funny ones.
I found an error (typo/link not going to where it's supposed to/accidentally wrong info/etc.)?
Tumblr media
But seriously, it's okay to message me to let me know. It's very helpful.
Can I have shared editing access to your document? No.
About the fanfiction thing... Please end my suffering. (And Neil Gaiman's) Edit: I should probably clarify that I do like fanfiction.
I have personal opinions. Please be nice to me.
Can you add or change this, that, or whatever? I work irl, am usually tired, and don't have much time to constantly edit every little thing. Unless you're Neil Gaiman himself asking, it's likely I'm just going to leave it how I organized it. And I mean that in the politest way possible. Speaking of, if you would like to help me out at all with things like bills, medical costs, and food— here's my: Venmo: @ajgvel Ko-fi page
It's not expected of course. Regardless, much love to everyone, and thanks for making a space where we can all have fun together about something we enjoy. ♡

How to (not, of course) still access z-library (kinda) safely.
complete and clear guide (that actually works) for desperate and bitter people.
Zlib has been taken down, devastating, many people are searching for alternatives, but we all know zlib specifically had the hugest amount of books + a very good and accessible interface.
I’ve seen many people suggesting to use tor, that is the best option to ACTUALLY get on the old zlib BUT!! don’t throw yourself over there if you’ve never used it. Come here babe ima boutta teach you smth.
For legal reasons, you should not use the browser or try to access the site wink wink.
Now, what is tor and why should you use it?
Tor is, simply enough, a browser, like firefox or chrome, except that it provides a bigger amount of protection. You can do anything there and almost never be discovered.
Is it safe?
Yes, but actualy no. It’s mostly safe, but nothing is garaunteed.
Is it legal?
No, not really. The usage of the browser isn’t itself that illegal, but tor is mostly known for illegal online activities linked to the dark web and you’re gonna do NONE of that or things that could get the authorities’ attention (or that are immoral, get help).
Now, measure the term and conditions and decide if it’s worth a try to get to your beloved books. If the answer’s yes,
Do the following:
1) dowload tor, this one’s easy enough, search for the browser, download it, you’ll have it on your pc.
2) check that you’re safe, get confident with the browser itself and the options, you’ll see the security levels and ALWAYS make sure tor is up to date, if not, update it. I also suggest to make sure to clear up the cookies section after any action, you’ll find this option in privacy, in the browsing section. (Also, try not to customize tor too much, it isn’t necessary, and it could make you stand out amongst users)
3) now we start, search up “zlibrary onion”, don’t click on the first link, if you do the site will be blocked, NEVER press “accept risk and continue”. What you should do instead, is click the link you’ll find in the square on the right, right beneath the zlib logo, THAT LINK ends in .onion, which means you are safe from being tracked.
4) wow! You’re on the site, good to be back right? But wait, the site won’t let you download books cause it says you’ve reached a limit, that never happened before. This is beacause the only way to download books now is to have an account, you can get the books sent on your email, or downloaded (we’ll talk about this furtherly)
5) you should never make an account using tor while using your normal email (a gmail or a lcloud one as an example) so you’re going to have to make another email (not cool, i know) i used PROTON.ME, it works like any email just much safer, not even the site is allowed to read your emails, it takes 3 mins to set up, it’s free and remember NOT TO USE names or passwords that could lead to you and your name.
6) now you can make the account, it will give you a link sent to the email you used, open it ONLY on tor.
7) you’ve got the account, search up the book and have it delivered to the email/download it.
(ABOUT THE DOWLOADS, do NOT open the file online, not even on tor, download it as a pdf BUT ONLY OPEN IT WHILE OFFLINE, the problem isn’t with downloading the file, but with opening it, especially pdf files, that do contain elements that can track you and your pc, which you really don’t want)
Now you have your book, and a proud feeling of accomplishment in being smarter than the feds, oh, also, absolutely don’t use this method. of course.
happy reading, don’t let them bitches stop the poetry.
P.S it’s harder to find the link now so here you go.

girl... could you infodump on antitrust laws like u said u weren't going to on that post about google putting a 5s wait on youtube in firefox?
ok so when it comes to antitrust and monopolization in general the waters get muddied based on what anti-competitiveness is defined as and when in history the laws were introduced.
in the US since we're talking american companies, if you look into the three main antitrust statutes, there is a common theme of "monopolies are bad...unless we can argue consumers like them, or that they're benefiting the economy". for example, the sherman act of 1890 makes a differentiation between monopoly and innocent monopoly. an innocent monopoly is defined as "a monopoly achieved through merit". the idea is that the company is simply so epic consumers chose to turn it into a monopoly. i'm not going into the full history of antitrust laws because the question i'm answering here is regarding tech monopolies in the 21st century, but I want to make it clear that US antitrust laws have been challenged and debated from the beginning and are arguably poorly defined. the times they were strictly enforced were a result of political pressure at the time and not strength and effectiveness of the laws. this reigns true for lots of laws--seemingly useless until the pressure is high enough. the first times antitrust failed to be enforced, monopolies redefined them in court (this happened with the standard oil monopoly which ended in a court ruling that gave monopolies even more leeway). and so, monopoly goes from a company holding a monopoly to a company holding a monopoly that is problematic enough. US antitrust laws are described as weak for the way they're kind of designed for monopolies to argue their way out of trouble.
OK now onto the whole "how the fuck can google do All That and not violate antitrust laws" thing. first of all, google has been challenged before by the department of justice. it was actually a pretty big case and made comparisons to microsoft's antitrust violations in the 90s. however, google's situation is different. in the case of google more consumers are outraged than competitors. google actually collaborates with other tech monopolies, and again, this collaboration can get around antitrust with the simple argument that it's not financially harming consumers. there is also google's business model in which it's "free". this is similar to companies like facebook who also skirt around antitrust laws. a lot of antitrust violations involve financial harm to consumers. this modern business model in tech is ahead of antitrust laws.
oh yeah and google used microsoft's antitrust case to take steps to avoid being convicted. in a memo they literally used a quote from that trial incriminating microsoft as an example of "language to avoid" regarding "perceptions of monopolistic behavior".
but what about firefox? could google get away with the 5s wait? well it certainly goes against their previous argument in court that google isn't making competitors lower quality. but again, the fact that consumers are not being harmed financially means google could avoid being convicted. google is absolutely engaging in anti competitive behavior, but not behavior that secures conviction, because US antitrust laws SUUUUUUCK.
TL;DR it's a combination of modern business models in tech and the language of US antitrust laws.

Did you know that google donates money to Firefox just so that they’re able to say that they don’t have a monopoly? I actually just watched a video about this the other day, I find it so interesting :) the video is called wait a minute… google funds Firefox by logically answered on YouTube!
youtube
Hiya!
Yep, this is an interesting topic about Google help fund Firefox! (I love learning more about Google vs FireFox 🥰👩🏾‍💻)
Firefox is funded mostly by donations. Last year they got around $500m, with $450m coming from Google alone. As the video states, Google could have easily let Firefox die by giving no funds and take their marketshare entirely but they didn't - for a reason.
Like you mentioned, there is a reason why Google funds so much, it's because Firefox by default has Google as the top search options in Firefox's search bar.
Tumblr media
This allows Google to remain a relevant and visible option for users and protect their monopoly as Chrome already controls 77% of the market, and also to appeal to users who value privacy and are conscious of data privacy. So people would use Firefox as the broswer but use Google as the search engine (I don't though, I use DuckDuckGo).
Tumblr media
The video also talks about the history of Firefox which is really cool to learn about, I recommend people watching this video.
Thank you Anon for the video recommendation! 👩🏾‍💻💕

Ridiculous Study Tactics from the World's Worst Studier
Or: how I try to work with my ADHD brain instead of against it.
Set a timer for ten minutes. Every ten minutes, stop studying and listen to the dumbest song you know. Like, the most ridiculous, campy, or otherwise enjoyably unserious things you can think of. Just close your eyes and empty your head while listening to, like, Fergalicious or Stacy's Mom or something. It's really hard to have a stress related breakdown when you're listening to Low by T-Pain. I also recommend the Gen 3 Pokerap if you hate yourself.
Take step one a bit further and study while listening to a loop of a stupid song. My go-to for really bad study sessions is a one hour loop of the reese's puffs/misery/cpr remix. Chaotic enough to distract the ADHD demons but repetitive enough to be disinteresting after the 5 minute mark, and I can actually focus on my work with it in the back (this can be substituted with anything, but I find either videogame music/nonlyric music or really repetitive songs on loop to be best. Playlists distract me too much).
Eat a thing for every question you review/every thing you get right/every sentence written/whatever. Like, an m&m or popcorn or something. I'm sure we could get into discourse about using food as a reward, and I do agree that food is value-neutral and not something to be withheld or rewarded with, but let's not worry about all that on this post because it's not that serious in this context, and let's just take this at face value as a fun little reward for things.
Tell your friends to yell at you if they see you on tumblr/social media in the next 30 minutes. Find accountability partners.
Study with the lights out/only your desk lamp on/only computer light. This one sounds stupid and it kind of is, but I know for me, visual clutter is distracting, so if I just <3 do not see anything but the work in front of me <3 then I'm more likely to actually do my work. Alternately, study in a clean and tidy room, but it's probably easier to just turn off the lights.
This one's a normal study tactic and less about how to work with your ADHD, but the best way to check if you know something or not is to try to explain it to someone else. That someone else can be a lizard or a rock for all I care, but if you can explain it then you can probably answer a multiple choice question about it too.
Use your school firefox/chrome/etc account for studying. Less interesting bookmarks. Or, if that's not applicable, then clear out your cache/cookies. This way you'd have to re-log into everything to scroll instead of studying. Incredibly annoying, because in six months you'll be prompted to log into some website you can't remember your log-in for, but effective. Use with caution.
What not to do: make a tumblr post about studying instead of studying (joking, I wrote this out during a break, but still).
