Crystal Headcanons - Curses
Curses in Atmos are part of a little-used branch of crystal magic, its teachings now unknown to many. Thousands of years ago though, they used to be much, much more common.
To cast a curse on someone, you need a crystal to store it in. It can be any crystal, but rare high-grade ones tend to accommodate stronger and more complicated curses. Once a suitable crystal has been acquired, pick your victim target and make a vow to cast your curse.
Example: I promise you a lifetime of poor harvests. No wheat or grain will ever satisfy your needs. Atone for the sins done to me and you may be released from this curse.
Strong curses take considerable amounts of willpower and internal energy as well as crystal energy in order to cast, and for inexperienced casters there is a high risk of it backfiring on the user. A backfiring curse uses the caster as a vessel, and may take anything from a few weeks to years to wear off.
Curse crystals become incredibly fragile as their matrices are rearranged in order to store the curse's magic. The most surefire way to break a curse is to break the crystal containing it, so knowledgable casters will take measures to prevent that, by either reinforcing the crystal, storing it somewhere safe, or giving it to the keeper of a Curse Library. Casters have the option of including a secondary condition to the vow to allow the target to break it by other means. This step is optional.
I came up with this lore a while back and while I've shared it on the Discord server, I have yet to properly do so here. I touched upon it briefly when posting about my character Stonebinder for the baltimore oriole bird OC challenge, but here's a full run-down on how they work for those curious.

Hello! I absolutely love your stuff, I've definitely gotten so many good ideas from you, and now I'm gonna ask pick your brain for another amazing idea.
I DM, and am in the planning, prologue stages for a homebrew campaign. One of my players grew up on a farm, and their reason for adventuring is that their homeland's crops are dying. The land is sour, animals are starving, the whole shebang. What could be a cool cause of this blight?
Thanks again, love your stuff! 💛
Tumblr media
Hilariously I got this message just after I’d finished queuing up a pair of adventures dealing with a widescale agricultural blight, symbolized by the appearance of twisted black trees that produce no leaves or fruit and seem to well up from deep within the earth. So without Further ado, let me present:
The Withertide adventure Arc
In The Haunting At Bitterheath the party is introduced to a land left abandoned after folk have their livelihoods ruined by dying crops, now inhabited by bandits, witches, and the heir of a mining magnate who’s looking to hire the party on.
In The Cankerwood House the party delve deep into the earth following a mine collapse, discovering that the black trees are all infact the roots of the same plant, sprouting from the foundations of a twisted and impossible mansion occupying a lightness cavern far below the surface.
There’s hauntings, witches, and the tragedy of a fairy-deal gone rotten. If I were including this in your campaign, rather than have your character actually be FROM the Bitterheath ( where the blight is generations old) I’d say the blight just recently sprung up in their territory, tens of miles away from where it originated.  Journeying to the Heath would give them a grim preview of what’s going to happen to their home, and gives them a reason to join up with the mining heir to use their resources to get to the bottom of things.
As a bonus, this arc is a great way to introduce Zuggtmoy, Demon Queen of Despair and Decay as a potential reoccurring threat to your campaign, potentially even as an archvillain

Cant believe i brought Home stuck into this whats wrong with me
Tumblr media
Small details on why i picked out their classpects (this prolly wont make sense if you dont know HS)
Took that extended zodiac quiz attempting to pick answers they pick and got ones that i actually really like
(I will prolly go into more detail like the metaphorical/homestuck meaning of the aspect n such but i am VERY tired and i need to go bed soon)
Mind was first and his was Light. Pretty obvious why those fit it being Light and Sun but also him being an Heir can connect to him being a ruler/having a crown
Heart fits the bubblyish? type ig of a Witch + Mind constantly insults him say he's manipulative. Witch is an manipulative type class. So kinda makes sense
Also what I love about those, is that Void and Light are opposite aspects. As well as Witch and Heir being opposites. Heir being Passive and Witch being Active. Which also fits with their characters too honestly.
Now Soul ended up Ironically being a Heart player. But makes sense given, in Home stuck, Heart is also/mainly connected to the Soul/affecting the Soul. (Will go into more detail later i am eepy)
Whole was difficult cause 1. None of what i could think of could fit 2. It feels very weird to me to classpect/answer questions as him sense this is technically CJ. So instead i but Heary and Mind togther, fucked around with it and made him have 2 aspects. Im already getting ridiculous making these so why not go the full mile ya know?
He's quite literally, MADE of Heart and Mind. So i just stuck both those unto him. Also, since Soul is a Heart player i felt it'd be fitting for him to be a Heart player as well. But since Soul not entirely Whole, he'd be a Heart player + more, if that makes sense.
Anyways im tired, might update these eventually. I cant believe i homestucked this guys im insane

thinking again how after gojo shows off domain expansion to introduce it to the viewer it's mahito who awakens his domain and not yuji and how he copies him later on directly when he activates both the barrier and the technique simultaneously for only .2 seconds, when the only reason we can assume gojo has such control over his domain is due to his being gojo

Check your conspiracy theory part two: double, double, boil and trouble
Does your conspiracy theory sound something like this?
There is a large number of people who practice a form of religion that demands animal and human sacrifices.
Their practices can be traced all the way back to ancient times.
They are responsible for many mysterious murders, disappearances, and animal deaths.
They especially prey on children, or require children for certain rituals.
Their rituals include immoral sexual activities.
They practice ritual cannibalism.
They use something from the victims' bodies for medicinal or mystical purposes.
They regularly cast curses.
They have special means of manipulating or controlling people's minds.
Strange medical and psychological symptoms are evidence that one has been targeted or tortured by these people.
Their rituals and holidays are viscerally disgusting mockeries of normal, wholesome rituals and holidays. Feces, urine, and blood are often involved.
Members are severely punished (physically and psychologically) for transgressions.
Members are frequently driven to suicide.
Members often lead double lives, often seeming to be good law-abiding citizens to the public.
There are numerous telltale signs that give their allegiance away; EG, strange body markings or owning things that could be used in rituals.
If evidence can't be found, it's because they have ways of hiding it.
They have ways of traveling and transporting victims to seemingly improbable locations with no one noticing.
They might believe themselves to be worshiping pagan gods, but it's actually a satanic deception.
All of these claims go back to early modern witch panic and blood libel. (There is significant overlap between these things.) You can find this kind of stuff claimed in literature like the Malleus Malificarum, A Discovery of Witches (the one by Matthew Hopkins), and the Compendium Maleficarum. You can also find information on the history of blood libel over here.

⚔️ 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗺! Blazeblood Rapier
Weapon (rapier), very rare (requires attunement) ___ This twisted silver flamberge pulses faintly in your hand. It always feels warm to the touch, especially the blade. While holding this weapon, your blood feels like it’s on fire: you gain resistance to fire damage, and whenever a creature within 5 feet of you hits you with an attack, that creature automatically takes 1d6 fire damage. 𝘽𝙡𝙤𝙤𝙙 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣. While holding the rapier, you can use an action to speak its command word and stab the air in front of you with it. You can then spend up to 3 Hit Dice (a minimum of 1). The rapier releases a blast of fiery blood, which extends from you in a 5-foot-wide line that’s 30 feet long. Each creature within the line must make a DC 16 Dexterity saving throw. A creature takes 3d6 fire damage for each Hit Die you spent on a failed save, or half as much fire damage on a successful one. The damage increases to 4d6 for each Hit Die spent if you have fewer than half your hit points remaining. If this property reduces one or more creatures to 0 hit points, you immediately regain 1d3 Hit Dice; a creature slain by it is reduced to ashes, unless it has the Legendary Resistance trait. Once this property of the rapier has been used, it can’t be used again until the next dawn. 𝘾𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙚. This rapier is cursed, and attuning to it extends the curse to you. As long as you remain cursed, you are unwilling to part with the rapier, keeping it within reach at all times. In addition, if you die, you are immediately reduced to ashes, and you can’t be revived by any means other than a “true resurrection” or “wish” spell. ___ ✨ Patrons get huge perks! SEA'S COMMUNITY COMPENDIUM UPDATE
We have a massive one today! Huge thanks to a close friend of mine who sent me every single bookmark of xiv resources she had. 💖
Additionally, a good handful of these resources were sourced from a list originally created by @rinhkitty, which you can find here. I have tried to include the more recent/active of the lot, so it's not a one-for-one. Thank them for a lot of the large scale resources you'll find below! ✨
As of 04/12, I have added the following resources (in no particular order) to Sea's Community Compendium for FFXIV Creatives:
LARGE SCALE
GARLAND TOOLS — Contains XIV resources such as Garland Data, everything database, crafting lists and equipment calculators; Garland Bell, gathering timers, collectable resources and hunt windows; and FFXIV Fisher, daily fishing windows, bait paths and catch checklist. Maintained by Clorifex Ezalor of Zalera.
TEAMCRAFT — Create crafting lists and collaborate with others, set gathering alarms, simulate crafting rotations, and more!
CAT BECAME HUNGRY - FFXIV ANGLER — Contains everything and anything to know about fishing including specific fish guides, location, baits, aquarium fish and more!
FFXIV - CRAFTING AS A SERVICE — Crafting information and planning for FFXIV!
FFXIV GARDENING — The FFXIV Gardening Database is a collection of everything related to gardening in Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. It was created to organize and visualize the results obtained from crossbreeding.
SIGHTSEEING LOG HELPER — This tool will help those trying to complete their pesky Sightseeing Log by letting them know upcoming weather patterns for each zone!
EUREKA TRACKER — For everything and anything to do with Eureka mobs, tracking and weather patterns.
FFLOGOS — for tracking of items/actions related to Eureka.
FFXIVSQUADRON — A comprehensive tool that helps you assess the success rate of various squadron missions.
FFXIV CHOCOBO COLOUR CALCULATOR — Will calculate what chocobo feed you will need to get from your current colour to your desired colour. *rng not included.
FFXIV HOUSING — A site specialising in the documentation of all housing items available in game.
HOUSING SNAP — A compilation of player-made housing designs. Can be used for inspiration or places to visit!
MISC
NPC CHAT BUBBLES — Would you like more NPC chat bubbles for edits? Say no more! Created by @alexoisxiv.
OLD TUMBLR LAYOUT BY PIXIEL — While not XIV specific I know a lot of people aren't fans of the new Tumblr layout, so this is a fix that will revert it to an as close as possible approximation of the new one. I won't tag the creator as I don't think they're in the xiv community, but it's run by @/pixiel!
HOW TO CURSE LIKE AN ISHGARDIAN — Do you want to make the church blush? Do you want to incur the wrath of Halone? @stars-and-clouds has compiled a list of appropriate curses/swear words for you!
FINAL FANTASY XIV SIDEQUEST GUIDE - HEAVENSWARD EDITION — maintained by @chatty-moogle, this guide explores interesting sidequests in Heavensward that will give you more information about the lore, titbits about locals and other interesting information!
TRUST BANNERS FOR XIV — If you have ever wondered how people mimic the Trust banners used in XIV, look no further! @locke-rinannis has a template for you.
MAKING USE OF RECOMMENDATIONS — created by @autumnslance, this guide will help you make your recommendations tab useful rather than annoying.
BOTANICA EORZEA — A guide to the flora of Eitherys and her reflections, including fungi and seedkin. For reference in writing and roleplaying. Maintained by @tinolqa.
GPOSE TIPS — A tutorial on how to achieve clarity and detail in your XIV screenshots! Created by @aryalaenkha.
UI MACRO MENUS — A guide on how to use macros to create small UI menus for XIV. Written by @diskwrite-ffxiv.
TYPHON GATE RESEARCH — Created by @mcstronghuge, these are the statistically best places for your character to stand for the Typhon Gate!
CHANGELOG
HYDAELYN HEALTH HAVEN has been removed at the request of the owner.
Moved THE BALANCE higher on the list to reflect alphabetical sorting, excluding names that start with The.
Misc formatting as needed.
Added some additional clarification around large-scale discords/spaces; in particular: Large-scale community discords such as the XIV Reddit Discord, Hunts, GPOSE promotions and broad-space roleplay servers that harbour a large number of people and are publicly available to all. These may not have an RP focus but will assist in other aspects of the game. Also includes well-known tools/resources that are utilised by large groups of people and assist in gameplay elements.
Added a quick-jump menu to the bottom of each of the table of contents menus to assist in navigation.
Want to submit? You can either fill out the google form here, send me an ask with the relevant information contained on the Compendium, or join my Discord at SEAFLOOR (21+ only)!
I am sure there's probably a couple of things I have missed or links/formatting that might be broken. Please don't hesitate to let me know if anything is out of place. I'm going to take a break now. I'm pretty sure that's the biggest edit that's ever going to occur on this document!
